“Perfectly Lonely”, John Mayer I mentioned another John Mayer song in my last musical ob

“Perfectly Lonely”, John Mayer
I mentioned another John Mayer song in my last musical obsessions post, but that was before Battle Studies officially came out! Mayer captures the delicious essence of single-ness in this song. It’s carefree, a bit humorous, and ends with the temporal realization of it all – when he’s ready, he’ll want to settle down. Out of all of the songs on the new CD, this one struck a chord with me (pardon the pun), and I’ve had it on repeat ever since. Cause I don’t belong to anyone, nobody belongs to me…

“Pursuit of Happiness”, Kid Cudi
Another song about marijuana? Not entirely. I prefer to address the youthful connotations and the search for happiness. If there’s one thing I really love about Kid Cudi, it’s his topic choice for his songs. EVERYONE is on the pursuit of happiness. The background music is fantastic – let the trippy guitar chords wash over you on those 4am mornings when you’re awake and want to think about life. I think you’ll appreciate it more then. p.s. the chorus is addictive.

“Beautiful Story” by Taylor Swift vs Akon ft Omarion (Ryson Remix)
I’ve never really been a fan of mash-ups until someone in my digital media class showed me Ryson Remixes. This kid knows how to mash songs. I never thought Akon and T.Swift could sound so good together! The songs transition seamlessly.

“I Could’ve Danced All Night”, Audrey Hepburn
Sigh. What a classic. I was reminded by watching Hollie Steel from Britain’s Got Talent. Her beautiful, darling rendition of the song prompted me to go back to the source: My Fair Lady. It reminds me of how you feel after prom, weddings, etc. Enjoy!

“Haven’t Met You Yet”, Michael Bublé
Oh Michael. Not only do you have an amazing voice, but you also will sing to us in a grocery store, or daydream about singing to us in a grocery store. I love his voice, which goes perfectly with your typical, bouncy, feel-good love song. See sample A below:

“Michael Jackson Melody”, Sam Tsui
As always, some AMAZING accapella to round off the list! Sam Tsui is one stuck up Ivy Leaguer (he goes to Yale). Since he’s too awesome to sing accapella in a group like a normal person, he made this song with 7 of none other than…himself. Yes, he’s singing all of the back-up positions a normal accapella group would have. You’ll enjoy his vocal range, which goes from Damn-that-sounds-exactly-like-Michael-Jackson to My-ears-are-experiencing-intense-pleasure.

March’s releases were officially announced this morning, it’s kind of anti-climatic as they were leaked earlier in the month by a European company that sells pullips. All three releases are collaborations, the pullip is based off of another character portrayed by Audrey Hepburn this time the title character of Sabrina, the dal is based off of the Disney classic Pinocchio and the byul is based off of the Disney classic Dumbo.

Sabrina is pretty but perhaps a bit too close to Princess Ann for my liking. I can not get over Jun Planning/Groove Inc’s fascination with Audrey Hepburn, her proportions are perfect for pullip but do we really need three pullips based off of her? She does actually come with two full outfits like Princess Ann did.

I am not very excited about Pinocchio, she has a lovely tan skin tone but I am not fan of her face up. I am not sure what dal’s fascination is with cross-dressing.

It’s a bad sign when the thing I am most excited about for the month’s release announcements is the byul’s stock. I loved the movie when I was a kid so of course I will need the Dumbo stock for one of my pullips/dals, I will not be going to the dark side and actually buying a byul though.

All in all, I am a bit disappointed with the March releases mainly because my birthday is in March and I was hoping for more exciting releases.

Audrey Hepburn once said, “Happy girls are the prettiest.” On a daily basis my mom always tells me something similar to that, “Nobody likes you because you are too sarcastic and mean.”

Am I supposed to infer something from this?

I mean, I think I’m pretty awesome. Haven’t you ever seen the movies High Fidelity? Say Anything? Better Off Dead? Sixteen Candles? The Breakfast Club? I am John Cusack and Molly Ringwald’s character in all those movies. How does that not make me awesome?

Sure, I might care about playing my 7″ records over hearing my friends “life” problems that usually consist in getting too drunk and sleeping with some low life slob. And yes, I may judge a person based on the type of music and films they like, but is anything wrong with that? I mean, even in High Fidelity, Rob (Cusack) says, “…I agreed that what really matters is what you like, not what you are like… Books, records, films – these things matter. Call me shallow but it’s the fuckin’ truth, and by this measure I was having one of the best dates of my life.” I’m not alone here. At least I know there is a fictional character who believes in the same thing as me.

I’ve been on a ’60s kick lately (even though I’ve been absent from the blog for a

I’ve been on a ’60s kick lately (even though I’ve been absent from the blog for a bit) and now comes the news of an auction of clothes largely from that decade from the wardrobe of the incomparable Audrey Hepburn. The big numbers are from Givenchy, her lifelong designer and friend, like the silk cloqué dress above from his autumn-winter 1966 collection that’s a most distinctive shade of blue. Seriously, the woman could even make a pastel look sophisticated. And as the catalogue notes, she ordered the dress (no loaners for Miss Hepburn!) for her publicity tour for Two For The Road, one of my all-time favorite movies.

Of course the auction includes loads of little black dresses, her trademark, and the story behind it is pretty rich. In 1951, Audrey, then 21, met Tanja Starr-Busmann, the 15-year-old daughter of a Dutch diplomat, in London where their families were neighbors. It was the start of a life-long friendship, and periodically Audrey would load up a big box with her haute couture cast-offs and send them off to Tanja. It really was a different world – Busmann even gave one of the Givenchy gowns to the nanny! Now all these years later, Kerry Taylor Auctions in London has acquired “the collection” and it’s set to go under the hammer on December 8, with half of the proceeds going to Unicef and the Audrey Hepburn Children’s Fund. Experts expect the sale to net north of $150,000, but authenticated Audrey pieces rarely come on the market and, after last week’s Yves St. Laurent sale where his old pots and pans went for $22,000, I think it’s anybody’s guess. I mean it’s Audrey Hepburn!

And then there is her wedding dress – for the marriage that never was. While she was filming the star-making Roman Holiday in 1952 in Rome, she sought out out the Fontana Sisters – renowned in postwar Italy for their full-skirted romantic gowns – to create her wedding dress. But as she finished the movie she called off her engagement to an Englishman and implored the sisters to give the dress away,”to the most beautiful, poor Italian girl you can find – someone who couldn’t ever afford a dress like mine.” (An impoverished farm girl, Amabile Altobella, wore it, stayed happily married and said the dress brought her luck.) Could you die?

Speaking of weddings, Audrey Hepburn also wore a lot of Valentino in the ’60s, and from his legendary Spring 1968 all-white couture collection there is a lacy vanilla mini, a version of the dress that Jackie O chose for her Skorpios ceremony with Ari. Val-hollah!

Acting?
I just received a text message from good friend Luke Katuin, asking me if I would be able to rehearse Monday night. Of course my reaction was “This must have been sent to the wrong person. I’m not in a play.” But Luke confirmed the text was for me. He has cast me in some sort of improvisational role, as well as stagehand manager for a play he’s producing. I haven’t decided if I will go along with this or not. What do you think? Is it time to return to my acting roots for the first time since DSU’s productions of Meet Me in St. Louis and Fiddler on the Roof?

MVP! MVP!
Joe Mauer won the American League MVP on Monday, which wasn’t surprising since he had by far the best year of any player in the AL, but it was still suspenseful as many were lobbying for Derek Jeter to win the MVP as some sort of lifetime achievement award. Thankfully Mauer destroyed the competition and became the second Twin in four years to win MVP. One Japanese writer from Seattle voted for Miguel Cabrera ahead of Mauer, keeping him from being a unanimous selection. Could Minnesota have another MVP this year with Brett Favre?

Birthdays
Happy belated birthday to good friend and local music up-and-comer Travis Bolton, who turned 27 on Monday. And happy birthday today to co-best man and Nebraska native Jason LaPlant, who turns 27 today. Late November is by far the busiest birthday period of the year amongst people I know. That and early February.

Back to Best Picture Project
For those of you who had some interest in the project, I recently posted my two latest Best Picture reviews over on my blog for that project. Be sure to read up on 1960’s The Apartment starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine, and 1964’s My Fair Lady starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison.

In Memoriam
It’s been a somber week here at the office as we all mourn the very unexpected passing of our VP of Marketing and Sales, Mike Laven. I reported indirectly to Mike for four years as he was my boss’s boss. Last night was the “celebration of life” for Mike in Stillwater. He was in a wheelchair for most of his life and was a star wheelchair athlete. On occasion we would have lunch together at Na’s Thai Cafe. He’ll certainly be missed around the office.

(Stanley Donen, 1957)

November 25, 2009

by Joel Crary

In my review for “Roman Holiday“, I professed my affection for Audrey Hepburn, describing her as an actress I could watch forever. Not many actresses could make the transition mid-picture from bookworm to fashion icon convincingly, but Hepburn is allowed. She always presented a duality of chaste spunk and sex appeal without extending herself too far in either direction. “Funny Face” needs her to be a success.

It also needs Fred Astaire, who by this time in his career had become accustomed to staging scenes of song and dance more organically than the stage could afford. It’s especially evident in a scene where fashion photographer Dick Avery and consummate fashion magazine professional Maggie Prescott (played by consummate stage professional Kay Thompson) invent a routine on the spot to fit in at a party of Parisian beatniks. Another film might have seen the disinterested crowd spring into action alongside the leads, but Astair and co-choreographer Eugene Loring are aware of their environments. The stars adapt, rather than vice versa, and the scene works.

Musicals like “Funny Face” exist to showcase the singing and dancing talents of their stars, with a few light and breezy scenes thrown in to set up the next performance. Hepburn, who can certainly dance, makes up for her rather average vocal ability by giving her character some comedic oomph. Dick and Maggie cross Jo’s path in a Greenwich Village bookstore, on location to make their Quality cover girl appear more intelligent. The bookish employee haughtily condemns their profession as superficial before they eject her from the store entirely, but Dick sees something in Jo that might sell a lot of magazines. He convinces Maggie to give her a shot at modeling and before long, everyone is off to Paris to launch a new clothing line.

The film is hardly a deep-cutting satire of the fashion industry, but it does play pretension on both sides for laughs. Jo repeatedly advocates for a school of philosophy called “empathicalism”, which sounds impossible to discuss with others who don’t follow it. Her dream is not to model clothing, but to meet Flostre (Michel Auclair), her hero, a professor of philosophy and the founder of empathicalism. As luck would have it, he lives in Paris and becomes the catalyst to Jo’s willingness to travel. Unfortunately, Dick is right about what, exactly, his empathetic mind is good for.

One musical number features Astaire, Hepburn and Thompson enjoying three separate days out in Paris, singing and dancing in split-screen unison. Hepburn’s best number takes place in a smoky cafe as she seems to improvise moves to free form jazz and swing, much to the amusing feigned horror on the face of Astaire. At 58 years of age, Astaire largely keeps his own routines reasonable, taking the opportunity to shine as an imagined bullfighter and an acoustic guitar-pounding tortured artist. The Gershwin songs are good, not great, with the title tune serving as the centerpiece.

Director Stanley Donen, who had worked with Astaire previously on “Royal Wedding” and boasted directorial duties on musical classics “On the Town” and “Singin’ in the Rain”, flirts with a pop sensibility in “Funny Face” that I found especially appealing. I liked the way he plays with photographic images, splashing them with wild colour over songs and dialogue that talk about how magazines influenced 1950s American women. I was hoping that “Funny Face” would delve deeper into ideas concerning celebrity image and femininity, but things are kept swimming pretty close to the surface. Not a single character in the film is self-aware, so no grand lessons are learned other than the obvious. Jo and Dick are happy together, fashion and philosophy be damned.

Jo’s interpretive dance to free form jazz and swing:

The other day I walked past a store and noticed several flat screen TVs blasting the same concert footage from every window. I’m not sure who the singer was. From various angles it could have been Beyonce, Mariah Carey or Britney Spears or someone else entirely. The honey skinned, blonde-ish sultry chanteuse in question was clad in a shimmery itty bitty bikini and shaking various parts of her anatomy much to the delight of the crowd.

I stopped for a moment, mesmerized.

Based on the size of the audience at the concert I’m guessing she was an A-List singer and a huge draw to potential shoppers.

Based on the fact that I could not hear her voice, but could see various, jiggling and exposed parts, I was incredibly sad. Why should a talented young woman have to rely on dressing up as a stripper to gain attention for her vocal talents?

I’m not much of a TV watcher, but a few recent musical interludes further fueled my rant on musical exposure of young women.

Ray Davies appeared on David Letterman last week clad in scruffy pants with a shirt that may or may not have matched. His performance was sublime with nary a choreographed hip shimmy in sight. Shakira, on the other hand, who appeared on the show earlier in the week, seemed too busy awkwardly contorting her body to concentrate even on lip syncing.

Lady GaGa appeared on the American Music Awards the other night clad in a pair of flesh colored shorts while draped in some sort of neon snake like body belt. Think Elton John in his early days, only without pants or a shirt and you’re close. Her fierce talent was eclipsed by her regularly exposed posterior.

Don’t get me wrong. I love a great live musical performance. What I don’t love is the notion that it’s become the norm for young female singers to perform dressed as burlesque dancers or strippers to gain some sort of mass approval of their music. There is enough pressure on women and too much emphasis based on the ideal of female beauty over the realities and struggles that most women face.

Two more pop culture references and I promise that I’m done.

1. Tween sensation Justin Bieber’s appearance at a mall recently set off a riot by over 3,000 screaming young girls.

2. According to The Wall Street Journal “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” beat out both “The Dark Knight” and “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” by taking in $72.7 million on its first day – the largest opening-day box office gross on record,

My point? Young girls have incredible buying power and clout and what they’re spending on and eager to see over all else is a squeaky clean barely pubescent boy and a film extolling the virtues of abstinence. It’s only when women get older that they become less desirable and respected a demographic to music marketers and/or the film industry. Somewhere in the middle of all of that, the more musically inclined amongst them are expected to primp and pout and shimmy while singing for their supper.

Rachel, who can’t imagine anyone asking Aretha Franklin to don a bikini for a photo shoot

About time I see it!

Lauren and I are back to the Best Picture project after taking the summer months (and some fall months) off to concentrate on watching baseball and TV series on DVD like Six Feet Under and House.

But on Monday night, we popped in the next movie from our queue, My Fair Lady, the popular stage musical-turned-movie starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison. As is the case with anything we start watching after 9pm, I fell asleep halfway through and had to finish it on my own Tuesday.

My Fair Lady is the story of Eliza Doolittle, a young flower selling girl from the slums of London with a thick Cockney accent. She becomes the subject of a bet between a pair of phonetics professors. Henry Higgins bets Hugh Pickering that he can turn her into a presentable lady with a proper English accent.

The movie is packed with catchy memorable musical numbers, many of which I had heard before but didn’t realize where they were from. Throughout the movie, I kept recognizing scenes that were spoofed or mentioned in other shows, specifically Family Guy and Seinfeld.

I’m not very good at giving in-depth reviews of movies as I don’t particularly watch a great number of movies. But I can compare it to the other musicals we’ve seen to this point in the project (An American in Paris, Gigi, West Side Story) and say it blew them away! My Fair Lady very easily transitioned from speaking to singing. The story flowed well for the most part and I was rarely confused (which itself is rare as I often find myself confused with some older movies). The costumes were lavish and authentic looking, but the set had a stage-like appearance, as if they had a fixed amount of space to work with. And the acting was all-around top-notch, especially from Harrison and Stanley Holloway.

This is one of those movies that remains very popular to this day and seems to be referenced all the time in pop culture. My biggest gripe is the length (just shy of three hours), and some scenes that seemed to drag on. I think I would have rather seen this as a stage production than watching the movie.

In the end, I’d give My Fair Lady a score around 7 or 8/10. Next up, we backtrack to 1960 for The Apartment, which just became available on Netflix.

And furthermore, did you know that it’s technically illegal for women to wear pants in Paris?

The fashion capital — which is known as much for Audrey-style cropped pants and boatneck tees as it is for trenches-as-dresses — has banned pants for women since 1800, when females wishing to dress as males had to show up to the police station to ask for permission before stepping into their trousers.

The Telegraph follows the evolution of the law in this article, which eventually allowed women to wear pants while riding a horse, and then a bicycle. The law was addressed again in 2003, but then Prime Minister Sarkozy refused to get involved, saying “Disuse is sometimes more efficient than (state) intervention in adapting the law to changing mores.”

Maybe that’s why Carla Bruni’s dressed so demurely lately.

The November/December/January releases- Nothing earth-shattering here. I am personally very excited Naomi and Edge are currently in the mail at the moment and I simply must have Richt when funds become available.

The January/ February/ Possible March releases- I am really looking forward to Feb’s, the more pictures I see the more I want all three. This picture seems to be confirming Dal Pinocchio, Byul Dumbo and another Audrey pullip for March. I am not sure if this Audrey is based on her portrayal of the title character from Sabrina or not as I am not familiar with the film, but there was a rumor floating around that a pullip based on her portrayal of that character was going to be the March release so I am kind of assuming it is ^^; . I still hate Byul but I so want the Dumbo Byul’s stock as I love elephants and Dumbo was one of my favorite movies as a kid.

Prototypes- A bunch of byul prototypes in the front some that I haven’t seen before, some that I have. I’ve noticed a lot of the byul prototype stock is nicer than some of the dals recently ^^; I think they may be trying to entice people over to the byul side. The Egyptian dal seems to be joined by an Egyptian pullip prototype, it’s kind of an interesting concept. I am not exactly sure what the other pullip prototype is at this point, is it supposed to be a Gypsy or something?

We learn from and look up to various people in our lives. Our mothers, fathers, siblings, friends, mentors. We learn from watching, listening, following, and imitating. But then there are sometimes influences from those you never knew, never will know. I have noticed a recurring woman in my life, Audrey Hepburn. I read a biography last summer, we saw the Breakfast at Tiffany’s apartment building in NY (kind of…it was under construction and covered in tarps), I am always tempted to buy posters, I can watch her movies over and over, and I want her wardrobe. She was a gorgeous, talented, sophisticated woman.

I recently came across some quotes from Ms. Audrey Hepburn and these honestly are quotes to live by. It may be strange, but I am blown away by this woman who I was never even close to knowing! If I could go back in time and meet anyone, here ‘ya go. Here is some her wisdom. What are your favorites?

“For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone.”

“The best thing to hold onto in life is each other.”

“People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw out anyone.”

“You can always tell what kind of a person a man really thinks you are by the earrings he gives you.”

“A quality education has the power to transform societies in a single generation, provide children with the protection they need from the hazards of poverty, labor exploitation and disease, and given them the knowledge, skills, and confidence to reach their full potential.”

“I decided, very early on, just to accept life unconditionally; I never expected it to do anything special for me, yet I seemed to accomplish far more than I had ever hoped. Most of the time it just happened to me without my ever seeking it.”

“I love people who make me laugh. I honestly think it’s the thing I like most, to laugh. It cures a multitude of ills. It’s probably the most important thing in a person.”

“If I get married, I want to be very married.”
