I know that I’ve been slacking off on this movie list, but I am slowly getting through it. I’m watching one with an asterik this weekend, I’ve decided. Along with making my way through Arrested Development.

In case you were wondering, The Way We Were was so involving. It was probably the best movie I’ve ever seen Streisand in. And I found the Banger Sisters hilarious—Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarandon were amazing. I would definitely recommend them both.

Last night I was thinking about great movie soundtracks—since I own a chunk of them myself. I listed some that were like The Graduate (done mainly by one artist), like Dan in Real Life, Once, and Into the Wild. But there were also some like Enchanted or The Garden State and of course, some classic Broadway (Sound of Music, Rent, and My Fair Lady).

One that I didn’t mention, but should have, was August Rush. This movie thrives and breathes music. It’s one of the only soundtracks put out in the last five years that someone could absolutely fall in love with without seeing the movie. And I don’t mean finding the music catchy.

The music from this movie has the ability, especially in the rhapsody at the end, to make you cry for no apparent reason. Shortly put, it’s fantastic.

Here, listen for yourself:

A prodigy. He was born talented. This 13 year old Korean boy has fascinated the world with his slick guitar picking finger movements. His youtube videos are viewed more than 5,000,000 times and have an average rating of 5 stars (out of 5) and has over 140,000 subscribers.

It seems as if even before Sungha could properly think, since he was born, he was in love with music. He was influenced by his father, no musical star, but just an ordinary dad who plays guitar for fun. This is evident in Sungha’s playing technique, smooth, relaxed and slick, but focused. More surprisingly, Sungha has never taken any proper guitar lessons, but taught himself – just like many other famous renowned musical prodigies.

I first fell in love when Sungha came on television, called StarKing, a weekly network talent show. I fell in love even before he casually tuned his guitar. His mature manners, unlike any 12 year old boy of his age, grabbed my attention. Who is this young gentleman? Then, my jaw literally dropped as he closed his eyes and touched the strings so softly, yet making vigorous music.

His musical life has not been long, since he’s barely a teenager. Throughout his life, he has had a total of 4 different guitars. When Sungha was only 9, he decided to spend his entire fortune, about $60 on his first toy guitar. Surprised by the talent of his son, his father buys him his second guitar, a parlor. Then without a cent, he earns his third custom made guitar, as a present by a Korean guitar manufacturer. Nowadays Sungha plays with his 4th guitar, sponsored by a reputable European guitar manufacturer, Lakewood – his official sponsor.

Sungha has become a world star, mesmerizing everywhere where there’s music. But Sungha sure does not act like one. Sungha Jung – the Korean August Rush continues with his busy school studies, spending time with his friends and keeping the gentle and calm smile on his face.

I had the distinct honor and pleasure of sitting down with the one and only Marian Seldes after seeing her in “Persistence of Memory” this past Sunday. Miss Seldes has been delighting audiences for more than six decades from theatre to film to radio and television. She made her Broadway debut in 1947 alongside Judith Anderson in “Medea.” Miss Seldes has been nominated for four Tony Awards and won in 1967 for her role in Edward Albee’s “A Delicate Balance.” She also starred with Angela Lansbury in Terrance McNally’s “Deuce” in 2007. In 1996, Miss Seldes was elected into the Theater Hall of Fame. Her film credits include “Leatherheads,” “August Rush,” and “The Visitor.” She is also the author of two books: a novel, “Time Together” and her memoir, “The Bright Lights.” Being a performer is a true labor of love for Miss Seldes and is evident in the way her face lights up when talking about her life in front of an audience. That love and enthusiasm was demonstrated time and time again while interviewing her. Below is my unique and privileged experience:

1. Who inspired you to become a performer? Seeing theatre and watching other actors on stage.

2. What has been your best and worst experience in a show? I have had no worst experience. The best experience is when the play goes beautifully and the audience loves it.

3. Who is the one person you haven’t worked with that you would like to? I feel so lucky to have worked with so many great people already.

4. Out of all the people you’ve worked with, who did you learn the most from? I learned the most from when I was young, but if I had to chose, I would say Katherine Cornell and Judith Anderson.

5. What is the best advice you’ve given someone, but not taken for yourself? I don’t advise people. I don’t believe that just because you are a teacher, you are given the right to counsel others.

6. Is there ever a time you thought about quitting? Never! Why would I quit?

7. Favorite pastime? I like to read, but I don’t consider that a pastime because a pastime is something that passes time and I don’t feel that one should read just to pass time.

8. Best holiday gift ever? Hugs from my grandchildren.

9. Superman or Wonder Woman? I don’t know because I don’t think there are men and women really like that in the world.

10. Favorite Play/Musical? They are all my favorite.

11. What is it about the color purple that makes it your favorite color? I just like the look and fit of it and I feel comfortable in it.

There’s never a shortage of great, even amazing live music in NYC. With the weather getting colder and colder, there’s less street performers around, but they still are there, just like the bed saleswoman, director, blogger, non-thinking salesman, and architect, they all need to make a living. The question is, “Do they?”

When I was at Arlene’s Grocery and heard The Band of Thieves, I was amazed at how damn good they were. Their hooks, guitar, drums…harmony were not meant for a basement bar, albeit a great one, but some pop culture Top 10 videos of the week TV show. When Jazz bands take over Central park or Washington Square park, I wonder…how great are their tips? Is this even their full-time job? I’ll go as far as to say that being a famous, successful (and wealthy) musician is as difficult as it is to be a professional athlete. Probability: 1 – … million?. But why are hedge funds, banks, and retail stores looking for musicians?

Granted, many upon many musicians are quite successful without being well-known household names and/or wealthy. When I mentioned Dave Brubeck to a friend, he wasn’t sure what I was talking about, thought he was an actor. How many have heard of Wynton Marsalis? Too many people watch VH1, MTV and BET for the latest and best, but what about the other ones? Where did they go? And how will I ever know that the woman in the park makes a living with her passion. I don’t know… But I do know there’s too much great music in New York City to pass up. Dylan, Ramones, Talking Heads, Blues Traveler all made a stops to NYC (some where from here), and I’m sure they once played in a park or on a corner…don’t cover your ears or be that fast walking ignore-the-world New Yorker all the time. Please.

Here’s a video of a woman playing in Union Square – BTW there’s a guy to the left taking a video of her ass… and I thought it was her voice that kept him there…

August Rush is a modern fairy tale where an orphaned boy searches for his parents while they struggl

August Rush is a modern fairy tale where an orphaned boy searches for his parents while they struggle to realize their own passions. Freddie Highmore stars as August Rush, who “follows the music” in his Oliver Twist –esque journey. His mother Lyla (Keri Russell) and father Louis (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) have journeys of their own as they try to reclaim their musical pasts. The movie does an incredible job of weaving together the main character’s stories: the score allows the movie to pass fluidly between scenes.
I believe in music the way some people believe in fairy tales. But I hear it came from my mother and father. Once upon a time, they fell in love… -August
August Rush is one of those movies where the directing, editing, acting, and music make the movie worth seeing despite a cheesy and cliché storyline. Director Kirsten Sheridan does an amazing job of weaving together shots and music to create memorable and heart-tugging moments. Some scenes say so much without one word. Sheridan skillfully uses close-up shots and the score to elicit emotion.
You know what music is? Harmonic connection between all living beings. -Wizard
Freddie Highmore does an outstanding job playing August Rush. His sweet smile and laughter keeps the story warm while his eyes pierce in the close-ups. Even though I think his character did not allow him to use a wide range of emotions like in Finding Neverland, he does a phenomenal job as a kid who never gives up hope. Even when he cries, he smiles.
It’s like someone’s calling out to me, only some of us can hear it. -August
Only some of us listen. -Wizard
This is Freddie’s first movie doing an American accent, and during the scene where he plays guitar with Irish actor Rhys Meyers, I think he slips back into his British accent for a word or two. You have to look out for it. Freddie also learned how to play some of the guitar licks for the movie (emphasis on some). I’m not sure what parts of the score are him actually playing, but he discusses learning to play in an interview. This is probably the last movie you will see with Freddie’s voice before it drops (check out the video interview below), except for The Spiderwick Chronicles (which was filmed before August Rush).

Robin Williams plays a street performing peddler who befriends August and ends up spurning August’s opportunity to study at Juilliard (ironically, Robin Williams studied theater at Juilliard).

Hi,

Watched a movie yesterday – August Rush. Quite a few people recommended it, and was curious. I was BLOWN AWAY!! It was brilliant!

.

Its a movie about music, about a boy who finds that he’s a musical prodigy on the way to finding his lost parents. I found the movie to be like our Indian movies – almost 2 or 3 songs for each character There is one thing that really struck me – the expressions. All the actors were good, but the expressions that the boy gave were simply out of the world. He shows what I feel when after a good violin session. I sometimes feel that I’ll glow in the dark with happiness (not tried it out; don’t ask if I have ). I’ll just lie back on the floor, back aching, shoulder aching, leg numb, but with my ears and fingers still vibrating, remembering the music. I’ll be basking in the afterglow of the music. Bliss. Listening to music is a joy, but creating music is something else completely.. You don’t need a masterpiece to move you; sarali varisai is also music That 11 year old kid shows that joy of music. Just amazing. Kept getting goosebumps throughout the movie, thanks to the music!

.

My desire to learn the cello has intensified after seeing the movie! (female lead is a cellist) Maybe I’ll get one and fiddle around with it Wow, WHAT a sound a cello has! Violin is a beauty, and cello adds a touch of magic to that sound

.

The story is not so great, but each song is fantastic, but the climax is the best! Check this out.

August Rush Rhapsody

LOVE this piece. Some special parts for me – the pluck of the cello chord at the beginning, the violin piece at about 2:20, the boy’s expressions throughout, the really cute little girl, her singing from about 2:30, the way the boy says shhh while smiling joyously, at about 4:10 (that was a killer!!), aaannd, the final thing that the boy says. Can’t agree more.

.

the music is all around us; all we have to do is listen

.

I just cannot improve on this. Must-watch movie, for the music and for the expressions.

Nah a zenészt August Rush fogja elkápráztatni.

I watched August Rush tonight. I picked it up at the library last weekend mostly because it looked like it might be interesting and, well, when it’s free it’s easier to take a risk on a movie that you might turn off in 10 minutes.

I did not turn it off. In fact, I watched it and then hopped on iTunes and downloaded the CD (not the soundtrack, the “music from” one).

I’m not going to try to tell you that the story is anything but predictable. From the opening stanza I knew where this had to go. The thing is, this story isn’t about the what and what — and it’s only barely about the who. This movie is about the mystical something that we call music. And yet the moment we name it, it has slipped into a new thing that we can’t quite put our finger on.

I found the movie to be affirming. Life-giving. Bright. True. And at had a good beat; you can dance to it. You almost have to dance to it.

At least that’s how I hear it.

The bird song is a place to begin.

But not the bird song.

A bird song.

That bird’s song.

It is not just any bird song.

It is a ballad.

And not any ballad but a lament.

Those chirps they begin at the back of a red feathered throat.

And they progress bravely, sadly, out and into the world.

Or the chime.

Those delicate crystal notes are fragile and tentative.

It is a surprise that they do not shatter on the back yard grill.

The basketball hoop.

The navy side wall of the SUV in the driveway.

The chime notes travel in a gaggle.

A herd-bunch of teen girls.

Headed to powder their collective noses.

They are arranged shortest to tallest.

A scale.

Take them together and you are getting somewhere.

Chirps and tings and tings and tings chirp!

But do not forget the wind.

Perhaps it is birthed beneath the bird wings.

It nudges and shoves the hanging metal tubes in that back yard where the dandelions stretch toward the sun!

Do not forget the wind.

It lands in the ear before the bird song and between the wind chimes.

Hear them together and you are beginning to hear something.

An old man with a lifetime of calluses,

Runs them up and down the smooth bare back of his grandson.

The little boy sighs. The old man sighs.

You will have to silence much of yourself.

To enter this deeply into The Music.

There is a siren down town.

We only call it a wail because we have stopped listening to it

And begun to think about what it signifies.

Begin to listen to it.

Stop thinking on what it signifies.

You will disover it is not a wail,

You will hear how it plays in the soundscape,

Rising above then below then above then below

The birds’ call and the chimes notes.

The rhythm section,

The scratchy rub and the sighs

And the breeze and the breeze and the breeze.

A man once told me that the music is only within me.

His words they were the first verse of a song.

A woman once told me that music is only outside me.

Her words were the second verse to a song.

There is a chorus.

I have not heard the chorus.

I will sing it now.

But not alone.

It was about a 1 1/2 ago that God began to birth a vision in me to do an old school revival. Right from the beginning I knew it would be at the end of August. It wasn’t long before the name August Rush came to me. I really liked the movie, but that’s not what drew me to the name. As a Pastor I’ve always felt that one of the key times of the year is when school starts back up. People are exausted from the summer and ready to kick off the fall in a fresh way. My thought was what if we did something that would challenge our people to “Consecrate Themselves” and get ready for the battle that is ahead of them. So in just 2 days we kick off August Rush!!

August Rush four evenings that will feature high impact worship music followed by a challenging message from dynamic speakers. We begin August Rush with a Men’s only evening Sunday night, August 30th with special guest speaker Aaron Cavin and music lead by John Redding and our dynamic Praise and Worship Band. Monday night is Youth Night also with Aaron along with special guest, recording artist Aaron Keyes and his band leading the youth in worship. Tuesday is for the Ladies of our church with a message from Donna Chambers (my lovely wife) along with special musical guest and worship leader Jamie Jamgochian. We conclude August Rush with an over the top First Wednesday of worship once again lead by top Christian recording artist and worship leader Aaron Keyes along with communion and challenging teaching.

We are Praying for this event and we are confident it will set the tone for taking our church to a whole new level of excitement and commitment to Christ. Make this a must attend event for you, your family and your friends.

I Can’t wait until Sunday when we see a What If idea turned into What Is!!!

I don’t remember when it was. My classmate, Herna, told me that Mr. Hariyanto assigned us to review an English movie. On that day, I didn’t attend bcos I got sick. For me, that assignment’s not hard for me… My hobby is watch English movie. Beside the story, I could learn the language directly, know the slang, the dirty words , and I could directly listen the good pronunciation and accent they have. As I said that I’m an English student, so I must enhance my English.

To review a movie, I had watched some famous movies, such as Death or Alive (DOA), 21, Benjamin Button, Transporter 3, Sleepover, Ice Age 1 and 2, August Rush, Bedtime Stories, Step Up 1 and 2, and many more. But I chose Benjamin Button. I believed that would be a great review, beside, on that time, Benjamin Button hadn’t published yet in theater, and I was the one who had seen it.

So, for u guys, before u watch Benjamin Button, I suggest u to read my review first, so that you could get more excited to see it.

And here’s the Benjamin Button Review:

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

This famous film is acted by Brad Pitt as Benjamin Button and Cate Blanchett as Daisy.

Once upon a time, there was a man bore with wrinkle skin, just like an old man. He was born under unusual circumstances. He was not like a baby as usual. His parents couldn’t believe it. His father, Thomas Button, did not want to have him as a child. He thought that the baby was not a real baby, but a monster. Thomas took away his son. He intended to throw him away, but he still loved his son actually. Finally, he decided to keep the baby in the old folks’ house. He put him on the stair of the house and put some money in his blanket. Queeny, the owner of the house, was surprised to see the strange baby on the stair. Queeny pitied the baby, so that she took him in her house, and considered him her son. She announced to the all old people who lived there about the baby. Queeny named him Benjamin.

Day after day, month after month, year after year, Benjamin was ten years old. Something difference with his appearance. He still looked like an old man but not when he’s still one year old. He looked younger than before. Benjamin realized his changing. He felt very good. One day, Benjamin met Daisy at the party of his house. Daisy came with her granny, they were special guests. At the first time, Benjamin was directly interested with Daisy. She was a beautiful girl with blue eyes. At that time, Benjamin was ten years old, but like fifty six years old, and Daisy was seven. They introduced each other, and from that they became a close friend. Benjamin told Daisy everything about his self. He told Daisy that he was actually still young just like Daisy, but only on the outside he looked old. Daisy couldn’t believe it firstly. Benjamin tried to convince her, and finally he believed. She liked Benjamin. She thought that she was falling in love with him, but she didn’t tell Benjamin.

At the age of seventeen, Benjamin decided to go somewhere for awhile to find a job. He left his house, his mother (Queeny), and Daisy. He would be back. Daisy was very sad. Benjamin promised her to send postcard everywhere he went.

For eight years, Benjamin and Daisy didn’t meet, but they knew each other by sending postcard. Benjamin told her that he was falling in love with someone, and that made Daisy jealous, and Daisy joined ballet club and she became the best and famous dancer.

Suddenly, Benjamin returned. Queeny and others were surprised and very happy. Benjamin was very glad back to home. He was looking for Daisy, but she had gone. He missed Daisy very much. Queeny noticed his son deeply. Benjamin was very different. He was not like an old man anymore with wrinkle skin and hunchbacked. Ho looked younger, taller, and stronger. Benjamin recognized the strange of his self. On the outside, he grew up younger not became older. And, he was very handsome.

Benjamin met Daisy at the second time. Not long after Benjamin returned, Daisy came back to the old folks’ house. Absolutely, Daisy was very shocked meet Benjamin. Daisy finally told Benjamin that she loved him very much and didn’t want to stay away from him. Benjamin also loved her very much. They decided to live together. At that time, Benjamin was forty five and Daisy was forty three. It was not a strange couple anymore. There was not too old and too young, because they had the same appearance. They were matching couple. For three years live together, they had a child. It was a baby cute girl. She was born like the baby as usual. Her name was Caroline. Daisy was very happy but Benjamin didn’t think so. Benjamin asked Daisy to find the real father of Caroline. He didn’t want to see Caroline has a father like a playmate. It was also impossible for Daisy could raise both of them. At the midnight, Benjamin left. He left his wife, and Caroline. He went to India, so far away. He left before Caroline could ever remember him.

Twelve years passed. Daisy was fifty five and Caroline was eleven. She had a new husband, Robert. He was a terrific father for Caroline. Suddenly, Benjamin came back. Daisy was very shocked. Benjamin came without telling her. Believe or not, Benjamin was too young just like the boy about 15 years old, and Daisy, her skin grew old and saggy. Benjamin met his daughter and Robert. Daisy introduced Benjamin to her family that he was her family’s friend. By looking at Benjamin, Daisy realized that she couldn’t raise both of them. Actually, Daisy missed him very much but she couldn’t do anything. And Benjamin never stopped loving her. After that moment, they lose contact. Robert passed away and Benjamin disappeared.

In the morning, there was a call. Daisy had a call from Mr. Hernandez of Child Welfare Services Department. She decided to meet him at the folks’ house where Mr. Hernandez called. He said that he found the boy named Benjamin. Mr. Hernandez knew Daisy by reading Benjamin’s diary. And finally, Daisy met Benjamin. He was playing a piano. Daisy approached him, but he didn’t need to be touched. Benjamin didn’t know anything, she confused. He looked like a boy about ten years old. He was too young. He got dementia. He didn’t remember anything, including Daisy. At that time, Daisy was seventy five. Daisy decided to move him to another place. They lived together. She took care of him. Benjamin was five when she moved in, nearly the same age she was when she had met him. Benjamin was growing younger and younger. The days passed, and she watched as he forgot how to walk, and how to talk.

In the spring of 2003, Benjamin looked at Daisy on her lap. Benjamin became a baby. The baby as usual, not like when he bore at the first time. And then, he closed his eyes as if he would go to sleep, instead of he died. He died on Daisy’s lap in peaceful. Yeah, Benjamin was unusual man. He was born in very old condition and passed away in very young, as a baby.

How’s that?? it’s not too long, isn’t it??? hehe ….
