Daily Horoscope:

Lies may seem to work more often than sincerity, but sincerity lasts much longer. Today you will probably be faced with a decision pertaining to whether you should lie or be sincere. If you lie, you stand more of a chance of being accepted, but if you’re sincere you may actually make things better.

Love Horoscope:

After the fire and adventure of the past few days, you’re probably ready for a rest – but that’s not quite what’s on the agenda, astrologically. At least, not yet. You’ve got some work to do, and some time to put in, to make your career the way you want it to be. Pry yourself away for a few hours!

Career Horoscope: This Week: November 23, 2009 – November 29, 2009

This is a positive week in which you can make a lot of progress. There are no delays and no frustrating circumstances to contend with. You have already had enough of these. You are especially fortunate if you work for yourself. Powerful aspects reveal easy access to extra funding and plenty of opportunities to promote your goods and services. Saturn in Libra means you are in a very business like mood. You don’t intend to sell yourself short – which has to be a good thing.

Money Horoscope: This Week: November 23, 2009 – November 29, 2009

Leo natives are right in the thick of things this week, as Mars in their sign forms a t-square with Venus and Jupiter. Though Mars brings a lot of energy to get things done and gives you an extra dose of star appeal, this tense planetary relationship could make you feel bound to a certain person, place, or job, and not in a good way. Since the outlet of this t-square falls in the sign of Taurus, you’re urged to concentrate on your career.

FOGS Lammas newsletter XIV-3 August 2003 Ups and Downs COUNTING on the state to care for our monumen

FOGS Lammas newsletter XIV-3 August 2003

Ups and Downs
COUNTING on the state to care for our monuments has never been the FOGS way. In the northeast we like to check matters for ourselves and have always be quick to relay information to government when an ancient site appeared under threat. We are all aware of the lack of interest shown by Historic Scotland for ‘unscheduled’ sites – a situation where the local on-the-ground network triumphs in adversity, and we continue to maintain our stance for full protection for all monuments. It is unacceptable, however, to find ‘scheduled’ monuments not being adequately conserved, simply for lack of staffing or funding.

Such is the case at the recumbent stone circle of Balgorkar or Castle Fraser NJ 715 125 where one megalith, knocked over during close ploughing, has remained fallen and damaged for over a year.

One remedy suggested by FOGS as long ago as 1989 and taken to the level of ratification in a preliminary paper by government but then shelved, is to compensate farmers for leaving a ‘set-aside’ buffer zone around a stone circle unploughed.

This not only avoids accidents such as at Castle Fraser, but allows visitor access and something close to the ‘feel’ of the original.

As we know, FOGS helped create such a ‘feel’ at Kirkton of Bourtie RSC (NJ801 249) last September with a bale circle surrounding the stones. Our offer to compensate the farmer privately to keep the resulting precinct unploughed – up to the equivalent of government ‘set-aside’ – was turned down, not because of the money, but because no other farmer was doing it! The bale circle lasted until July, but close ploughing has again prevailed, making the circle look even more derelict than before. This is an HS matter.

Thankfully many farmers leave a respectful distance around stones, but there are glaring exceptions. Is it not time for our politicians – if they profess to look after our heritage – to put their(our) money where it does most good? Every NE farmer owning or renting a field with a ‘scheduled’ antiquity would cost the state approximately £200 per site at a generous estimate. Some (single monoliths or avenues) would rate less.

Bureaucracy is welll-placed to administer such a payment (combination of HS scheduling and agricultural set-aside systems), but close ploughing continues. Fourteen years is a long time for FOGS to remain silent. It seems it may be time for us to flex our stoney muscles once more.

2003 AGM at Balquhain

Balquhain recumbent stone circle and quartz outlier

BALQUHAIN in the Garioch is one of those miraculous recumbent stone circles which has been left in best care: that of the landowner – continuity assured, passing father to son in the Strachan family for three generations. Although a scheduled monument on the Historic Scotland list, its survival intact is notable: no interpretative signboards or erroneous road signs costing a fortune; no twee carparks; just a simple farm track and field boundary access with a magnificent treasure at the end of it.

The horizon is blocked only on the North by Gallow Hill; other Garioch stone circles are clearly visible and, for those who like spectacular celestial events to mark their AGM, there is the Bennachie equinox sunset roll-down as a bonus.

This is your invitation to attend FOGS 2003 annual meeting at 2p.m. Sunday September 21st at Balquhain, NJ 735 241. From A96 1m N of Inverurie take Chapel of Garioch turnoff (W) for 1 mile, passing Echo Vale; turn N (right) at Mains of Balquhain farm with its 13thC keep, follow farm track, and park at cottar houses. Access to Balquhain RSC is by field march & will be FOGS AGM signposted. The stone circle has been carefully wide-ploughed by the Strachans, although, as mentioned in our solstice news, they receive no compensation for doing this. Its main megaliths are cupmarked and, unique in the Garioch, a full-size all-quartz outlier seems to have equinoctial possibilities! All but one of its perimeter stones are in original positions. We are hoping for a good turnout, to foster our usual multi-discipline expertise in art, dowsing, astronomical alignment, geology and engineering – not to mention history, ritual and conjecture!

The MARS Effect
WITH Mars much in focus at present, at its perihelion on August 30thm 2003, three days after its closest approach to Earth in nearly 60,000 years, it is gratifying to FOGS to find even local news stations giving the red planet a mention over the usual run of social unrest. After all, the last time we humans saw it so near and clear, we were emergent Neanderthals and it was 57,538 B.C. Or was it? Actually, Mars came close enough for a flurry of telescopes to appear in London on 23 August 1924 and on 18 August 1845. On both occasions the orb was within a similar distance from earth of 56 million km (34,646,000 miles). However it won’t come so close again until 28 August 2287.

Bourtie cross saved for public view

Bourtie steading 8thC Pictish cross

A BIG THANK YOU to all FOGS and friends who wrote, emailed, telephoned government departments or approached their local politician in support of conserving the 8thC Pictish cross-inscribed stone in a Bourtie steading. Because of the overwhelming response, it has been decided not only to keep the stone in situ but to reserve a small area of ground where a path will allow visitor access. Sometimes a little stone is worth a big amount of effort.
…but what about the others?

AS LONG AGO as 1990, FOGS questioned the stance of government (serving the public) in their acquiring portable antiquities but not providing adequate access to such acquisitions. A decade ago public access was not such a hot potato as it is now and, perhaps unnoticed, certain Pictish carved stones disappeared from view in the landscape.

Notable are the ‘Rhynie Man’ (in local government HQ Aberdeen), the Tillytarmont carved stones (in storage) and the Dyce Pictish and early-Christian stones. Historically local government has made little distinction between ‘rescue’ of a stone and where it was ultimately kept; the mere act of rescue seeming to outweigh the public access consideration. ‘Rhynie Man’ was ‘rescued’ and his former farmer owner compensated within ‘treasure trove’ legislation, but he remains on view only within office hours – inconvenient if you are a weekend visitor. Tillytarmont goose stone and its companions may only be viewed by permission – FOGS were once allowed a rare glimpse. The Dyce stones still languish in Edinburgh – rather a detour for an international visitor who has made the long trek to St Fergus chapel, Dyce, only to find a plaque in their stead. A Pictish landscape we may live in, but fewer Pictish stones are being seen in their context. And the public is not always as specialist as FOGS or as patient in its demands.

NInth century Pictish carved Maiden Stone on the slopes of Bennachie

A recent local government idea by some tunnel-visioned bureaucrat was to remove the Maiden Stone from its Bennachie slope to stand sentinel in an interpretive visitor centre. Local opinion was outrage; so the plan was dropped.

Whether we agree or disagree with rescue per se, Pictish stones are a kind of grid or network by which we may measure our past and they belong to us all. Public opinion is presently swinging to full transparency and non-élitism; are the public servants listening?

The Fringe team closes in on the mysterious Observer after they investigate a bizarre abduction case

The Fringe team closes in on the mysterious Observer after they investigate a bizarre abduction case in Boston, MA.

Here we go, this is more like it. This week’s episode features the mysterious bald headed Observers. They remind me of the Watchers from Fantastic Four. I keep calling their guns the “Ultimate Nullifiers” and nobody but me thinks it’s funny.

The big revelation right off the top of the episode (and is not a spoiler) is that there are more than one Observer. In this episode we see four of them. One of the guys reminds me of the Cro-Mags from the crappy Sliders years. His head is misshaped and is proof that not everyone can pull off the Mr. Clean look. I know, I used to do it, and I looked good. One Observer, August, comes off the sideline and gets into the reaction by participating in a kidnapping that’s more than it appears (damn, that’s two episodes in a row).

This episode had me salivating because the Observers are present to watch a significant event in history so you know they are strongly connected to the primary story arc of the show. That being said I was a little let down by the execution in parts of this episode. We learn a few new things about the Observers but nothing really ground shaking, and I was really hoping for an earthquake.

My qualms with the episode are actually very few. The first is the nature of Peter’s origin. It’s been teased at since mid season 1 so I’m sure if you’ve watched the episodes up until now it’s plain as day for you too. I’m just going to say it: The Peter of this dimension died and Walter stole a Peter from another dimension to replace him. It’s obvious, we’ve even seen little Peter’s grave. My headache is that no one will come out and say it. There better be another big twist to that story or I’ll be annoyed for them dragging it out.

One of the handful of things that we learned about the Observers is that they also act as guardians of the timeline, putting things right if they somehow go wrong. If someone survives when they are supposed to be dead, the Observers call in their assassin… DONALD! WTF?! That was weird. Not the kind of awesome I was expecting. Also the way that the kidnapped girl becomes historically significant was kinda lame.

The number one thing that pissed me off in this episode was the scientist guy from Massive Dynamic. I absolutely hate then a sciency-type character is brought in to explain the multiple interpretations for the flow of time, especially when they do it with incredibly stupid visual aids. If that guy got my shoes wet during his crappy explanation, I would have punched him.

All and all, this was a good episode. Some lame execution pulls thing down but the insight into the Observers was great and I can see that paying off more in the future. The ending has a wonderfully foreboding message that spells trouble, and I like the sounds of that.

Most of us know at least one person who celebrates their birthday around Christmas, so how do you he

Most of us know at least one person who celebrates their birthday around Christmas, so how do you help them mark the occasion? Do you send them two cards? Do you give them two gifts? Do you settle for giving them one special gift and card? What is the correct etiquette in this situation? What do you do for a child with birthdays at Christmas when their brothers and sisters enjoyed parties with their friends earlier in the year?

All too often you will find that a Christmas birthday just gets merged into the festivities and the opportunity to celebrate it properly is lost forever. Organising a birthday party for adults at Christmas is hard enough but it’s even harder for Children as everyone is so busy with last minute Christmas shopping and the endless queues on the High Street.

The traditional advice for Christmas Birthdays is:

1.	You should never send just one card hoping that it will cover both Christmas and the Birthday.

2.	Always wrap the birthday gift in a suitable Birthday wrapping paper – using a Christmas wrapping paper for both birthday and Christmas present is bad form.

3.	Always wish the recipient a Happy Birthday before wishing them a Happy Christmas.

4.	Whilst a token gift is acceptable as a Christmas present more effort is expected for Birthday presents.

Christmas birthdays don’t have to be this way. The Queen has an official Birthday and a private Birthday; this idea can be extended to those with a birthday at Christmas. To be precise what I am suggesting is that for people whose birthday falls between Christmas Eve and Jan 2nd we should nominate the August Bank Holiday as their Official Birthday.

What could be better than to plan a party or barbeque in honour of your friends Official Birthday. For once they could really celebrate their birthday in style without it being overshadowed by Christmas. For the official birthday you would give a beautiful birthday present with a small card wishing them a happy day. At Christmas you should send them a normal Birthday Card and a token Birthday present.

August is a great time of year for an Official Birthday party. You should be lucky enough to have great weather for an outdoor barbecue; beach party or grand picnic in the countryside and it’s late enough in the year to still be remembered at Christmas.

Why not give it a try this August and really give someone a surprise birthday party.

Linda Garrould is Managing Director of http://www.iadoreyour.com the luxury online gift store for men and women. They have the perfect gift for all occasions. Unlike many online businesses they also offer personal shopping advice for example to men looking for the perfect gift for their wife or girlfriend that you would normally only find in small boutiques. They also provide gift wrapping, free standard delivery and affordable prices.

I first heard about AmeriCorps in June. I was looking for a part-time job with flexible hours since I am a full-time student. Anyone looking for a job right now would know that this isn’t an easy task. In June, I received a text from my mother-in-law about a part-time position with Americorps in the Metro-East St. Louis area. After getting some more information, I found that it was perfect.
I suppose a little history is in order. I grew up in California and I have been doing volunteer work since I was thirteen. It started with local service like sorting cans at a food pantry and serving food to the homeless in Oakland. Eventually, I started traveling and volunteering. In 2002, I spent part of my summer working with kids my age (at the time) and older in Central Los Angeles. During the summers after my junior and senior year of high school, I traveled with a small group to a Navajo Reservation in Arizona where we provided a basketball clinic for the older teens, crafts and games for the younger kids, and held health clinics for the adults. A year later, I traveled to Guatemala City and worked with a youth-oriented group at schools throughout the area where we encouraged the students with our own experiences, which many of the students found relevant to their own lives.
My year of service with AmeriCorps and Lutheran Social Services of Illinois started this past August. I have done and learned so much since then and this blog will chronicle those experiences.

Every August for the past 16 years crowds swarm to the Danforth, Greek town. They go to enjoy the Taste of the Danforth – an exceptional event which closes off a large part of the Danforth for the entire event. Once there people can smell the aroma of the various fresh Greek delicacies being sold all along the street. There is food, music, apparel, and many other Greek things that people can enjoy.

The Taste of the Danforth is sponsored by such organizations as Pilaros, Astro-BioBest, George Foreman, Moosehead, Mill St. Brewery, Coca-Cola, and the Raptors, Centennial College, Air Canada and numerous others. They are also sponsored by several media organizations including, dine.TO, the Star, and City TV.

Year in and year out the sponsors and media sponsors do a fabulous job making the Taste of the Danforth all it can be, it is considered to be one of the largest street events in Ontario (if not the largest).

Kids ages 9 and up will invent unexpected characters to populate the strangest of settings, concoct revolutionary plots, turns colors and senses inside out…..And see that their ideas are limitless!
