Cinder by Marissa Meyer My rating: 5 of 5 stars Actual Rating: 4.5/5 Cinder was a really unique take

Cinder by Marissa Meyer

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Actual Rating: 4.5/5

Cinder was a really unique take on Cinderella, and while there were definitely still echoes of the original story in this retelling – the wicked stepmother, the ball, the glass slipper – Cinder is more than capable of standing on its own.

I really loved how layered the world building was. We’re first introduced to the dynamic between humans and cyborgs through Cinder, who faces the social stigma attached to being a cyborg. Through Kai, we come to understand that there is a lot of political tension between the remaining countries of Earth and the Lunars, a sort of otherworldly people who live on the moon. Then, on top of all that, there is a plague, and both Cinder and Kai have to deal with both the ramifications of this plague and trying to find a cure.

Another thing I really loved was how natural Cinder and Kai’s relationship felt. There was an instant attraction between the two, but the progression from there felt realistic and wasn’t instalove (which was really nice!). They’re a couple that was easy to root for, and I’ll continue rooting for them while reading the rest of the series.

The one thing that made me give Cinder a 4.5 instead of a 5 was the Big Twist at the end, which I called from the first 50 pages. I felt like given the clues we had, the twist was really obvious, and while I still loved everything about this book, it was a little disappointing for me.

Despite that, I do recommend this book wholeheartedly. I can’t wait for the rest of the books in this series!

Review:

I’ll admit, I was hooked in by the words “cyborg” and “deadly plague.” Because of that, I didn’t really know what to expect.
Cinder is an amazing mix of science fiction, dystopian, and it even has a classic fairy tale thrown in. I’m crazy about anything sci-fi and I really think Cinder hits the mark with putting the right amount in it without being overly weird for those who don’t particularly like sci-fi.

Cinder, our cyborg Cinderella, didn’t really make a lasting impression on me. I think she’s a great character and I enjoyed reading about her, but something was missing that could have made the connection better. Cinder didn’t annoy me at all, she didn’t whine, didn’t do incredibly stupid things, honestly, Cinder is the epitome of what I wish every female character could be. Cinder is the kind of character you feel for. She makes you ache, makes you hurt. Her struggle with being a cyborg is heartbreaking, not only because she is a cyborg, but because of how cyborgs are treated- less than human, just because of mechanical parts.
Our Prince Kai is drool worthy as well. I’m glad, for once, there is a love interest who is not mean. Doesn’t say nasty things and snatch and grab on the heroine. Thank you Marissa Meyer for making him a gentleman!

As for characters I can’t stand, it would be, hands down, Adri. Adri is Cinder’s wicked stepmother. I have absolutely no nice feelings for the woman. Just reading about her made me want to pull out my hair! Her meanness to Cinder was astounding and I can see why Cinder was so desperate to escape.

I’m deeply in love with the world that has been created. A world of plague, a world where medical technology can create cyborgs, a world that has people that live up on the moon; it’s not the dream world someone would want to live in, but for story-telling purposes it really makes you think. I do think the main part of the story was a little obvious, I figured out what was going on early in the story and it was very easy to jump to the right conclusions. That said, it didn’t take any of the joy I felt reading away.

We are left with a major cliffhanger (!) and it’s a long wait until 2013, when Scarlet is set to publish. Definitely add this one to your list for the new year and be prepared to swept up in romance and deception.

-

Is anyone else wondering if other Asian cultures now reside in New Beijing (since Adri wore a kimono instead of a cheongsam)? I’m kind of wondering if Japan and such was wiped out. (Or maybe I just missed reading about it?)

My Review

In the first chapters of Cinder, debut author Marissa Meyer’s intricately woven retelling of Cinderella, we meet Cinder, a cyborg with courage, heart, and spunk. Meyer does a fantastic job of weaving in elements of the original story – the step-mother and two step-sisters, though one is less wicked than in Cinderella, and a handsome prince. There’s even a ball, which Cinder longs to attend, all the while fearing she won’t fit in. Cinder’s vulnerability and the scorn she faces from those who know she is a cyborg rang true and valid throughout the book, and it was how she handled that ridicule and her fear of never finding a place she belonged that immediately endeared Cinder to me. I connected with her in the opening pages of her story, and at the end of Cinder, I felt a strong kindship with the spirited heroine. Cinder herself is loyal to those she loves, strong, and no-nonesense at times; she has a huge heart and dreams of escape, of a better life – something surely we can all identify with.

The plot of Cinder moves along very nicely; I was never bored, and unlike some novels, where scenes are thrown in to pad the bare areas, or stripped to keep the pace clipping along, every word felt like it ought to be savored, and each scene felt as if it played its part and purpose. In that aspect, this book was what I was looking for – it was a good length, but Marissa Meyer knew when and exactly where to stop in order to leave me hanging.

The world building was lacking in some ways – World War 4 was alluded to but nothing more – leaving me wondering what happened to the world as we know it, and how New Bejiing rose to power. The plague constantly worrying the leaders served as an effective ticking timebomb, never giving the reader time to forget the looming threat. I also wanted to know more about the Lunars, though I suspect they’ll continue to play into the sequel/s. Levana, the Lunar Queen, was ice-cold and probably because I loathed her, I of course wanted to know more about her.

At time, the similiarties to Cinderella were charming and easy to spot, but never obvious in an annoying way; rather, they added to the story, whether it was advancing the plot, or making a character sympathetic or non-sympathetic. Marissa Meyer clearly put a great deal of thought and heart into her characters – most of them were very well-fleshed out, and unique. There were a few whom I wanted to know more about, that I am sincerely hoping we will see a lot more of in the sequel/s.

One thing that let me down slightly was that early on, I predicted the book’s twist, which was somewhat disappointing, especially considering I usually try NOT to think about how a book is going to turn out – I prefer to be surprised. To me, the twist was very easy to see coming, but that didn’t detract much from my enjoyment of the book. Cinder was still a superb read.

Marissa Meyer knows how to write a book, plain and simple. Relationships were explored, her characters have genuine and fascinating voices and personalities, even though Cinder’s point of view was the only one we saw. We have villians, and quirky robots, a fun menagerie of non-stereotypes. The interaction between Kai and Cinder left me wanting so much more, and while there was not much romance, there was enough of a bond developing between them in a slow-burn, that I was hanging on the edge of my seat during their scenes. The two of them fascinate me, and I especially look forward to learning more about Prince Kaito.

Overall, Marissa Meyer’s stunningly driven retelling of Cinderella, CINDER, is a fascinating twist on a beloved classic, managing to at once remind the reader of the age-old rags-to-riches story while breathing new life into the children’s tale, bringing it into a new demographic. I finished Cinder over the course of about two nights, and I simply had to keep reading, in order to know what happened next to our heroine, whom I deeply admired. Cinder and its characters will stay with me, making the wait until the sequel, titled (for now) Scarlett, oh-so-long.
