Microsoft has just come out with an enhancement to Powerpoint 2007 which many will find useful. It enables a presentation to be integrated into authorStream and youtube by a few clicks of the mouse. What is even more interesting is what can be done with a PowerPoint slide presentation using a Wii controller; pptPlex also enables a presentation to be sent to your iPod.

I recommend a look. Here are some useful links, with brief commentary.

This is an overview of pptPlex. The commentary sounds like it might have been prepared with dummies in mind – MS working to the lowest common demoninator, as it were.

http://communityclips.officelabs.com/Video.aspx?videoId=f362631f-c86c-4547-a544-9b8eda9975e3

Using a Wii controller for a PowerPoint pptPlex slide show.

http://communityclips.officelabs.com/Video.aspx?videoId=6e2db82d-9b72-4f61-a240-1cf91300f131

Here is a Wikepedia discussion about what sorts of things can be done via authorStream.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AuthorSTREAM#authorSTREAM

Now, authorStream itself.

http://www.authorstream.com/

How to send a PowerPoint slide show to youtube via authorStream.

http://communityclips.officelabs.com/Video.aspx?videoId=b6bf7144-df56-43de-8d8e-74f3f8bbf925

Your authorStream show can also be sent to your Apple iPod.

Transfer speeds between authorStream and youtube and within youtube itself, according to MS’s own commentary, can be unusually long. Have fun.

Slideshows When I needed to create my first slideshow presentation, I chose the online presentation

Slideshows

When I needed to create my first slideshow presentation, I chose the online presentation maker SlideRocket because I wanted to be able to easily work on my presentation at multiple locations. I was satisfied with it until I realized that I couldn’t export it; rather, I could only export it to SlideRocket’s offline player, which is not available with the free plan. I’ve been meaning to investigate alternative free online presentation makers, so I welcomed the opportunity this Thing provided.

I created a PowerPoint presentation comparing free online presentation software and embedded it using SlideShare:

I’d recommend Zoho Show over 280 Slides for creating presentations online. If you need to include charts and tables, I’d use PowerPoint or Open Office.org Impress (an open source alternative) and upload it to SlideShare or authorSTREAM (aS currently only supports PowerPoint format).

Watch my SlideRocket slideshow here. It can’t be embedded into a WordPress.com blog for security reasons.

There’s also a link to it in the sidebar under “Links”.

Photos

I investigated the options Flickr and WordPress offered. The WordPress Flickr widget (see my sidebar) is identical to the Flickr HTML badge. I can’t embed a Flickr slideshow or add a Flickr Flash badge to my blog, again for security reasons. Luckily, there are alternatives: slide, RockYou, and SlideShare slideshows can be added to WordPress.com blogs. I went with slide because it easily let me upload my photos from my Flickr account. You can upload images from various social networks and photo sharing sites. There are many options for easily customizing your slideshow, including adding music. It’s easy to display your slideshow on the many social networks and blogs available, either automatically at the click of a button or by copying and pasting the code provided.

!!!

Databases

Lazybase was having server problems when I tried it, so looked at blist, which seems similar. To create a blist, you can import data from Excel, use a public blist as a template, or start from scratch.

You can choose from several built-in columns possessing different properties depending on the type of data to be entered in that column. The pick list column allows you to create a custom pick list of categories or terms that you use frequently that will be displayed in a drop down menu in each cell in the column (for example, if your blist is a list of books and you include a genre column, you might create a pick list of genres for that column) . You can also create a blist-in-a-blist (a table within a row).

You can also create lenses to display items in your blist that meet certain criteria. Again using our book list as an example, you can create a lens displaying only science fiction books. The lenses you create are available in a drop down menu just above the table.

Finally, you can mark blists as favorites and tag them (you can also tag each row in a blist) and share your blists by sending an email containing a link to your blist, bookmarking on delicious, or adding to mixx.

I created a blist for books I’ve read. You can also search “Books I’ve Read” in the blist search bar. You can create a widget that you can embed on your website or blog, but I can’t use it on my blog.

So today we took the work the students created in class and uploaded a range to AuthorStream. The motivation to get their work on the site was impression. I also learnt a few teaching points for E(ngage)-Learning and was left with one or two questions to reflect on;

Although I created a short presentation about using AS, actually creating an account needed a little more structure. Perhaps a slide or screencast. Even though we had talked about online safety, this must be reinforced.

The structure of the activity must be very clear, so that the work chould be completed and perhaps checked before going online, (emphase the size of the viewing audience, perhaps the ratings/feedback they receive might reinforce that point?

Tags, I forgot to explain the importance of tags. As yet you can not yet create groups on AS, tags would be a very good way to search for students work and create “groups.”

Q. How do you encourage students that dont want to post? We had one student who was less than positive.

I ran a Web 2.0 workshop for North West Academic Libraries (NOWAL) on 2nd May 2008 at Salford Univer

I ran a Web 2.0 workshop for North West Academic Libraries (NOWAL) on 2nd May 2008 at Salford University. The aim of the event was to give people a taste of what Web 2.0 is all about and an opportunity to test drive some of the applications. Inevitably, we were limited by what we were allowed to use on the computers in the training suite, and the absence of speakers on the PCs meant that I had to do the commentary for Common Craft’s YouTube video ‘RSS in Plain English’ . I suppose one could regard that as a mashup of real/1st life and the electronic world!

At the end of the day, I asked the participants to think about which applications they would definitely use, those that are worth considering (the ‘maybe’ category) and those that would get the definite thumbs down. As they had varying experiences of the technologies, and were looking at them from different perspectives, it is not surprising that some ’stuff’ ended up in more than one category. We even invented a new award (see And finally… )

No!

There was only nomination for this category. Second Life (SL) did not seem to have any supporters on this workshop. As one has to download software to run SL and run it on serious, heavy duty network connections we were not able to experiment with it on the day. Some of the workshop participants had had bad experiences with it in the past and I did not help matters by recounting the tale of my disastrous attempt to attend an SL meeting the previous evening. Those of us who had tried it agreed that the technology is still getting in the way and it has a long way to go before it is promoted to the ‘maybe’ list.

Nevertheless, it is being taken seriously by Manchester Business School who have commissioned design and new media agency Corporation Pop to develop a Second Life island for them

Yes

Pageflakes - for pulling together frequently accessed information of all types. Can be kept private but also made public as a Pagecasts, for example Dublin City Public Libraries, East Lothian Libraries, ActiveIT.

Flickr – publicise your events, launches/relaunches of services, new library facilities

RSS – great for personal current awareness, but also a way of adding content to your web site, blog, Facebook etc. and generally facilitating the sharing of content.

iGoogle - your very own personalised Google start page for frequently accessed information of all types, but ‘tabs’ can be shared with colleagues.

YouTube – link to ‘how to’ videos, create your own virtual tours of your library, or make videos of your key events.

Wikis – great way to collaborate on documents for example a glossary of acronyms and abbreviations (under development by one of the workshop participants).

Blogs – can be used as sources of information and as a quick and easy way to provide news of services, events and ‘What’s New’ to users. Several of the workshop participants were already active bloggers.

Maybe

Social Bookmarking for example FURL, Del.icio.us, Connotea, 2Collab – could be a good way to provide access to evaluated subject and reading lists. Connotea (owned by the Nature Publishing Group) and 2Collab (owned by Elsevier) are aimed at researchers and scientists. “If only we could persuade our academics to use them” exclaimed one workshop participant.

Facebook – worth a try but, because of its structure and minimal import/export options, beware of possible extra work in having to re-enter content held on web sites, blogs and start pages .

Google Docs – several people thought that they might use Google Docs as a way of collaborating on documents but only for personal use and for applications where it would not matter if the document was inadvertently made public.

Presentation sharing services for example Slideshare, authorSTREAM. A good way to share lectures and also presentations on library services.

Nominated for both the ‘Yes’ and ‘Maybe’ categories were: YouTube, RSS and iGoogle.

And finally…

A new category. The winner of the John ‘you-cannot-be-serious’ McEnroe award goes to – ta da, ta da:

Twitter

I did try very hard to convince them of how wonderful Twitter is and was joined in my endeavours by some of my followers (thanks chaps and chappesses, your efforts were appreciated by at least me). The presence of the BBC, Timesonline and even No 10 Downing Street on Twitter did not help. I suspect that the main problem is the Twitter associated jargon and nomenclature. The name ‘Twitter’ generated enough titters on its own, but when quickly followed by tweets, twitterstream, TwitKit, Twitterfeed, Twitterment, Tweet Clouds etc … well, I think you can see the problem.

Phil Bradley has loaded his 30 Web 2.0 applications presentation on authorSTREAM. The applications that he has chosen for his Top 30 are worth investigating if you are not already aware of them, and so is authorSTREAM itself. It is similar to Slideshare, in that it allows you to upload and share presentations, but you can also provide an accompanying commentary as Phil has in this case.
