Hey it’s Friday!

I was just about to leave to catch a train (going home-home first then London for the weekend) but thought that I couldn’t let the weekend go by without a blog post.

This is just an absolute quicky showing off the N900’s autofocus video. Unlike the N97 or other Nseries that are stuck to a fixed zoom point (N97 horribly set to infinity, so anything closer than, um 1 mile is blurry), with the N900, the subject can be very far away, within a few cm and the infinite degrees in between.

This was literally all shot, edited in 2 minutes. Uploading whilst I type this.

Consentono la messa a fuoco all’infinito.

A presto.

I’m an ignoramus when it comes to technical issues but I’m wondering about the pricing of electronic goods, lenses in particular. In the old days when you bought a good lens, you paid through the nose, as you do today, but at least you had assurance that that you would most likely have the use of the lens for your life-time.

Now when you cut off your limbs and give them to the retailer in exchange for a piece of glass, it will only be usable as long as the electrics last, and there’s no telling how long that will be. I would love to know how long these things are designed to last, but I’m sure that the average will be considerably less than the lifetime typically enjoyed by pre-electric lenses.

What brought these thoughts on is that a friend has had a Canon 24-105mm lens for a couple of years and it recently stopped working. He was quoted more than half of the dollar price for new lens, to have it fixed. In another case, practically our whole camera club used to shoot Canons and many of us owned their 17-85mm lens. Ever single one of us, and several other people we know, have had that lens fail, and had to pay plenty to get it fixed.

I was a pretty early adopter of Canon autofocus in my home town of Durban, South Africa. I bought three lenses in the early 1990s and one in 2003, when I switched to digital. Only one of those, a 35-135mm, is still working.

I don’t know whether lenses have come down in price much in real terms, but they should have. Do electronic lenses offer the same value for money as the lenses in the past did? If the manufacturers offered parts at cost, as a service, maybe…

The Autofocus System.

Quite an interesting read. Reminded me of how I always did my tasks before someone handed me an organizer. From then on, I screwed up.

As a matter of fact, I think I already do practice Autofocus in some way with my OmniFocus to-dos. I’ve never prioritised per se. If I get bored with the to-dos in one “project”, I just move to another.

I don’t see the projects as well, I just see the to-dos.

It’s quite an “in the moment” kind of thing.

I just don’t do it by pages, as the Autofocus system recommends. I do my to-dos hovering between projects. So projects are kind of, for me, like the pages in the Autofocus system.

I suspect all systems are essentially the same. Unless of course, there are people who follow their lists in a completely linear fashion. If so, it’s quite clear that… I don’t know, this being a clear assumption: They don’t feel very creative?

What I’ve really learnt and have found useful is to have all the things I want to read linked in OmniFocus and I only have up to 2 items in the browser window open.

There seems to be a lot more satisfaction that way even if the movements seem incremental.

(edit)

Image quality of the D40 is very good which is #1 factor that I look for in a digital camera.

Here are the pros and cons of the D40 in my opinion:

Pros:
1. Nice out of the camera result picture quality
2. Affordable price
3. Compact size and light weight
4. Large and bright 2.5 inch LCD
5. 2.5 frames per second
6. B/W, Sepia, several more in-camera editing features.
7. Instant power on, fast autofocus and no shutter lag
8. Noise is acceptable at high ISO settings. Auto ISO settings available.
9. Great 18-55mm II AF-S kit lens.
10. Great battery life (400+ on a single charge. 1000+ if flash is not used).
11. Auto (flash off) mode available
12. 1/500 flash sync

Cons:
1. No direct button to change QUAL, WB and ISO settings
2. Grip comfortably but might be a bit too small for some people
3. No top LCD and no front command dial
4. Autofocus will not work with non AF-S or non AF-I lenses (such as the 70-300m G and 50mm f/1.8D lens)
5. No AF/MF switch (have to use the switch on the lens)
6. Only 3 autofocus point
7. 6 Megapixel (More Megapixel needed to print larger than 12 X 18 at 300 dpi)
8. No night landscape mode in pre-programmed settings
9. No in camera image stabilization (like Sony and Pentax) but Nikon has lenses with it (VR).
10. No depth-of-field preview button

In conclusion, the D40 is perfect for those who want high quality pictures, more control (than a point and shoot camera), and have a DSLR experience (instant power on and no shutter lag), without having to carry a bulky camera. And unless you are shooting sports/actions professionaly (which faster focusing processor, faster frames per second and larger memory buffer might be needed), the D40 is pretty much all you will need.

Happy Photographing!

I sold my beloved Nikon D70 after four years of use. I still miss it. I purchased a D40, but it never felt right. Picture quality was good, better than the D70, but I had to go through menus to do most everything (changing white balance, ISO, formatting the card, you name it), whereas the D70 had dedicated buttons. That makes all the difference in usability. Besides, the D40 does not even autofocus with my beloved 50mm 1.8 lens. Are you kidding me? I returned the D40 after 3 days of use.

I was lookind at the D80, 40D, the D300, the XTI, and this one. All good cameras (at the end of the day, they all take excellent pictures). it’s the usability/sweet price/new features factor that counts. 40D and D300 are expensive for me (not a pro). The XTI is getting old (still good though, and very good price). The D80 is very good, a bigger brother of my beloved d70, but still old: no sensor cleaning, to highlight tone priority, does not ship with a bundled VR lens. You are basically buying a 2006 camera in 2008. I did not like that.

I found this XSI at Circuit City. It felt right in my small hands. It had most of the buttons I need to make changes quickly. I still have to go to a menu to set my custom white balance (the D70 had a button for that). Same thing to format the card (button combination on the D70). Auto ISO is not as smart as Nikon’s implementation. Other than that, the camera is excellent. All the other buttons are there. It has an RGB histogram (very important; it lets you see if you are clipping individual colors). Picture quality is great. Very little noise (Canon’s CMOS sensor is cleaner than Nikon’s CCD on the D80), very pleasing skin tones (I take lots of pictures of my daughter and wife).

If the D80 had the same 2008 features as this one (highlight tone priority, self-cleaning sensor, bundled VR lens), I would have gotten that one. It’s still a great camera. This one is just a 2008 camera with features found in the semi-pro 40D and the pro 1DS.

I’m very happy with it

howdy folks,

PReview.com has a new hands on preview of the new Canon 7d.

here’s the link: http://www.dpreview.com/previews/canoneos7d/

It turns out that Canon has decided to up their game and be the leader of the APS-C sensor field again. Although the 7D looks a lot like (and was timed right to be) the replacement for the 50D, from what I have read, the 7D is more like a big brother than a replacement. I’m wondering if we’ll still see a 60D in february (only time will tell). With dual digic IV processors, 8 fps (frames-per-second), ISO range from 100-6400, a new 19 point auto-focus and new 18 megapixel sensor, at $1900 for the body and 28-135 image stabilized lens or $1700 for the body only, this is definitely worth a look for anyone considering a prosumer camera. Expect retailers to start stocking it at the end of september.

idea: have an autofocus book for each project, but keep one overall one in which items can always be entered by default. In the general one, we can put in todos such as: ‘do one thing in the XX project book’.

We can then see if this project autofocus book breaks away, gains a certain autonomy, or not. Maybe after a while, the ideas in it will migrate back to the general book. This might mean that the project is not yet ready, or that the project is better seen for the moment as part of a general type of project, and therefore ‘its’ ideas should serve other similar projects.

The autofocus systems could be a way for this decision to be taken naturally, organically, as part of its natural workings.

As mentioned in earlier post, focus is found by in camera computation when using passive autofocus

However, noted that the 2 sub-types of Passive Autofocus system, both uses contrast to find focus

There are 2 types of Passive Autofocus system

Phase detection:

A separate AF sensor is used , the incoming light beam is separated into pairs and directed to the AF sensor.
Using the 2 light beams, the sensor will determine the differences between the 2 and use it to calculate the distance and determine the correct focus

Contrast Detection:

In case of contrast detection, it make use of the image sensor to get the image (light beams) which will be use to compute the focusing distance and drive the lens to find the correct focus. It usually start hunting from infinity which makes it slower.

Comparing phase detection & contrast detection -

1) As the steps taken to find the correct focus for phase detection is simpler, it makes phase detection faster than contrast detection

2) While phase detection is faster, contrast detection by default will be tack precise as it hunts the full range. Phase detection will need to be calibrated to ensure the algorithm is good.

However, as techonology advances, one day, contrast and phase detection will catch up with each other’s short coming…..

Viewty,Cookie,Renoir…and now it’s time for this dainty wide-screened cell phone to shine

Viewty,Cookie,Renoir…and now it’s time for this dainty wide-screened cell phone to shine brighter than any of its predecessors. By releasing Arena, LG seems to be quite sure about how consumers will respond to it. S-Class is what a new user interface LG tries to offer this time, and Arena is the first LG phone using this newly invented UI. Will Arena make our consumer-darling iPhone 3G lose its edge? Only time will tell.

Let’s take a look at ‘her’ features now…

BANDS

UMTS 2100, QUADBAND GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz

DESIGN

Small, compact size is definitely a plus. And miss Arena is seemingly flawless in terms of design. The dimension is 10.59×5.53×1.2 cms, weighing 105 grams only,so it’s really phonelike, unlike the more costly, heavier, and thicker iPhone. There’s practically no keypads stretched on ‘her’ body, other than call,menu/multitasking,and end button, which don’t really look like normal buttons. The color is silverish white, or whitish silver, if one may say. Simply put, the design is simply irressistible, impeccable.

SCREEN AND TOUCH USER INTERFACE

We may see someone’s traits through his/her eyes, and we can do the same thing to cell phones. Screen is a cell phone’s eyes which tells literally anything embedded in it.

Our slim Miss Arena tries to captivate its potential users’ heart by providing the latest UI called S-Class,which is allegedly devised to compete with iPhone’s touch UI. A 16-million-colored TFT capacitive touch screen with 3 inches diagonal and 480×800 pixels density is said to be sensitive to finger press or touch, but not to stylush. And the drawback is quite classic, TFT is great under shade or indoor, but sucks outdoor.

CAMERA

Schneider Kreuznach apparently loves to cooperate with LG since their last colaboration,LG KC 550,if I’m not mistaken. A 5-MP,flash,photography-software-supported camera which satisfies even the pros. Oddly enough, this phone can play DIVX video file but only can record a 3GP video file. It can be a downside for the phone overall performance .

CONNECTIVITY

What I hate from LG is that LG sometimes doesn’t even care about how its users connect their phones to another gadget, by wire/cable. Our miss Arena can only be connected to your PC via LG USB cable which of course isn’t compatible with any other phones. Therefore, if you lose or break it, you have an annoying problem to solve. Data and connection lines are various. Except the conventional USB cable, you can find WI-FI,and Bluetooth A2DP.

MULTIMEDIA

Arena provides complete entertainment features ranging from FM radio to internet-based applications which you can directly use without even downloading them first.

GPS

GPS receiver is provided here, though the access is rather hard even when using the HSDPA network.

BATTERY

With 1000 mAh, the stylish Arena can last for approximately 2 days (normal usage). HSDPA,GPS,and a wide touch screen are a deadly combination to drain the battery’s energy.

Olympus C-AF Camera

According to the Olympus website “the Olympus C-AF went on sale in 1981 as the first Olympus autofocus camera. It featured a unique automatic rangefinder developed jointly with another manufacturer.” My dad came to Japan around 1984 and it was then that he bought this little beast. He didn’t take it back home though because it is apparently broken. I haven’t tried putting new batteries into it yet to see if it works. Anyway, if it really is broken then I’d definitely like to get it fixed and use it sometime!

Mitsubishi ‘Times Square’ Television

There’s not that much special about this mono-audio analogue TV apart from a nifty design feature where you can store the remote control when you’re not watching the TV. This TV is without a doubt older than me (I’m 21 now) and whilst most of the channels appear fuzzy and slightly distorted, TV Asahi for some reason appears crystal clear. Anyway, all of the major broadcasters are now regularly displaying messages during programs about phasing out analogue broadcasts. In Japan digital broadcasting is known as ‘chi-deji’ of which the ‘chi’ stands for ‘earth’ or ‘ground’ and the ‘deji’ is digital.

…it comes out!

Sony Playstation

Ok, this one’s not so retro but there’s also my PlayStation which I bought for a mere 2000 Yen the last time I was in Japan. A great way to kill some time when there’s nothing to do!!

Just got home from a long day at work(s). Had my final day at Life Pharmacy Pakuranga for my externship, and then my usual shift at Newmarket. It’s been a week since I bought my new Nokia N95 8GB cellphone/smartphone from Expert Infotech from all the way over the ‘Shore, and I thought it was a nice time to express my first week impressions!

What can I say? I’m still speechless from how satisfied I am with this cellphone! Features-wise, it is by far the most jam-packed cellphone I’ve ever owned (Wi-Fi, 5-megapixel Carl Zeiss autofocus camera, built-in GPS, 8GB of memory, just to name a few of the countless functions!), not to mention how sexy the phone looks! It looks so manly. The epitome of what a man’s phone should look/feel like! What’s more, 95% of the time, it performs extraordinarily well. Why only 95%, you ask? Well, being a perfectionist, there are a couple of very minor niggles/bugs that I’m not too fond of:

- First off, it appears that all Symbian-based Nokia phones have this bug, where text messages in the inbox are shown surname first. So for example, if I receive a text from “Mariano Rivera”, the inbox shows I have a text from “Rivera Mariano”. This one doesn’t bug me as much as the next bug;
- After I flashed the phone to Taiwan firmware (the phone was originally for the Bulgarian region), I discovered that the firmware has trouble showing the names of texts I receive from 9-digit numbers (EG: 021-123456), and showing the names of calls (caller ID) I receive from 10-digit numbers (EG: +6421-123456). This bothered me the most, as a lot of my friends were on plan, and hence had phone numbers that length.

So after a few days of trying to live with these problems and trying to find solutions online, I decided to try my luck with the N95-2’s Hong Kong firmware (as Raymond updated his N82 to the newest firmware just a few days ago, and doesn’t have the dodgy 9/10-digit caller ID problem). Turns out luck was on my side. I now don’t have this problem, but at the same time, I desperately hope Nokia fix this bug in the Taiwan firmware for future updates (I much prefer having Taiwan firmware than Hong Kong).

N95 8GB (N95-2) Review:
Looks/Design: 9.5/10 (the slider’s a little wobbly, but still extremely solid. I just hope it doesn’t get any looser. But you can’t argue how sexy yet manly the phone looks!)
Functions/Features: 9/10 (if only the camera had the N82’s xenon flash, then this would’ve easily been a 10/10)
Ease of Use: 8.5/10 (here’s where my K800i might have the upper hand [it was soooo easy to use], but then again, maybe it’s because I’m a total noob to Symbian)
Overall (not an average): 9/10 (easily the best phone I’ve ever owned)

I also just finished my 5-day community pharmacy externship placement at Life Pharmacy Pakuranga. What a drag… The staff there were great, and it was a pretty good experience overall. However, I didn’t particularly like the efficiency of the dispensary. Their so-called “double-checking” system didn’t work well at all (even with 5 pharmacists on duty simultaneously!), and I found that patients had to wait much longer than they needed to for their scripts. But all in all, a nice experience!

Ok, I think it’s off to bed for me! 8am start at Superclinic! XD
