Alex Metric has had a very successful couple of years and is making quite a name for himself with his monthly cross genre Radio 1 show, In New DJs We Trust. Since signing to Adam Freeland’s Marine Parade label back in 2007 he’s not only released 4 sensational electro pop EPs but also countless remixes for artists such as Hard-Fi, Ladyhawke, Pheonix, The Infadels and Reverend & The Makers. He’s talents have certainly not gone unnoticed – he won breakthrough producer at the 2008 Breakspoll awards and was voted remixer of the year by XFM, beating the likes of Soulwax and Justice. His new EP is called “It Starts” and is out on Marine Parade on 30th November. Think fuzzy 80’s style synth pop mixed with quirky, offbeat vocals and heavy electro beats. He has just recently supported the autoKratz on their UK tour with his new LIVE show (where he plays a KEYTAR!). I’ll definitely be keeping a close eye out for Alex’s debut album which is supposed to be dropping early next year. Download Evil Nine’s razor sharp remix of the new EP’s title track:

Don’t miss Alex Metric’s live show along with Evil Nine and Adam Freeland at the Marine Parade Christmas party, Coalition, Brighton on 20th December.

In the email, he included a little teaser, which I figured I’d post up here, along with some tracks. He makes a really intense breed of Electro, which is some aspects reminds me of Shadow Dancer but just way more intense/distorted.

Today is News Folder Day which means I’ll be listening to all that stuff that has piled up and been labeled “News” over the last few weeks. As so often, I sometimes don’t even remember who recommended that stuff, or even where I got the songs from. So I just go along, tell you what I hear, and if something’s worth a closer look, I’ll see what information I can get. Let’s go:

Lastbandalive – The Mexico Of Europe

I know that this was a recommendation from Morten as I’ve ripped this song from MySpace for him. And it is a damn catchy tune that these 3 Danish lads have composed… hear it once, hear it for the rest of the day! No free downloads unfortunately, but I recommend that you visit their MySpace anyway for a listening session.

ID Guinness – Life As We Know It

Got this new song from the Canadian Alt-Rocker himself; it’s the first teaser from the new album Soul Envy which is available for pre-order via his MySpace (it should be out since August 09…). I’m still waiting for an approval to post the MP3, so in the meantime check his homepage and re-read my first article about ID Guinness here.

Totally unrelated to the News Folder, I have just found out the news about Get Well Soon’s next album. It is called Vexations and will be released on January 8th next year. Can’t wait!!!

Get Well Soon – If This Hat Is Missing I Have Gone Hunting (MP3)

Pernice Brothers – Chicken Wire

voted by Spinner.com as the saddest song ever. Well, it is kind of sad (especially the lyrics), but definitely not the saddest ever. I’d rather vote for this one:

Here’s a more uplifting one by the Pernice Brothers:

Pernice Brothers – Somerville (MP3)

A last one I have time for: Autokratz is a Manchester producer-duo, and their ElectRock-sound has quite something. Been listening a lot to the rather good Always More (hear it on Last.FM), and Can’t Get Enough is not so bad, either. Probably nothing to stick around for too long, but fun while it lasts!

SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO @ BATACLAN (16/10)

Comment ils savent?! Il joueront It’s a Beat, Audacity Of Huge, Hustler(évidemment), 1000 worses can’t be wrong, scott, I believe…

autoKratz’s new single ‘Stay The Same’ is out now, and with new singles come remixes! To be honest, I would avoid calling ‘Stay The Same’ a new single as it’s been around for well over a year. Still these remixes are pretty good. Does a rehash count as new release? Produced by Passion Pit’s own Ayad Al-Adhamy at his Bo Flex Music studio, they’re unleashing some of the biggest pop jams you’ll hear all year. “Tuff ‘n Stuff” is their masterwork, leading you in with a deceptively plaintive intro before dropkicking you in the jaw with a metric ton of Ratatat-sized synths and huge pop choruses. “You Were Young” stuns on the AA-side, all spiraling synths, infectious hooks and a seriously ill bridge that sounds like Daft Punk on a sugar high. Yeah, they’re pretty much the sonic equivalent of flying down the yellow brick road while its raining ecstasy and skittles, and yeah, you’re gonna want to taste this rainbow.

From time to time, I feel that it’s appropriate to revisit a track that I didn’t very much attention. This track is “The Lock Shot” from Goshi Goshi. It’s a weirdo of track that has some classic electro house sounding synths slapping against some b-more style drums. I can even hear a little bit of wobble bass and piano stabs. It’s definitely the ingredients for a festival/big room track. I was reminded of the track when Toronto native, DJ Barletta, made a bootleg. Barletta and Ernold Sane add some recognizable rap vocals and more womp to the wobble bass. IMHO, they should have chosen a different accapella to use, but the edit still bangs. I’d also recommend checking out the Goshi Goshi remix of Autokratz because I love tracks that sample crowds cheering.

When Guns ‘n’ Bombs broke up mere months ago there was a little something missing from our lives, so we can thank the lord the Deathface is here to fill that hole. A new(ish) sound and some fresh remixes, Johnny Love is certainly keeping up with the times and proving he can make it on his own.

A suivre donc. (7/10)

A vérifier à Paris prochainement donc.

It’s a britpop summer. Blur last week. This week – Oasis. At Wembley. Admittedly my first time inside Wembley Stadium. I have stood outside it interviewing people about football.. however, this time I was going in!! OH F*CKING YEAHHHH. Because Oasis were on. I was always a closet Oasis fan when I was 15 but I was (DON’T FUCKING SHOOT ME) a die hard Blur fan. It’s true. And I’ve survived. Funnily enough. Both sets have been intensely amazing this summer. The bands are different and credible in their own rights so let’s not go on about it too much – its boring and should stay in the past. One thing I will say however: Wembley Stadium sucks. It’s claustrophobic and oppressive.. I was talking to a lovely lady in the toilet queue and her words were ‘it feels like a prison around these parts’ I mean come the f*ck on – if you’re paying 90 quid for a ticket and 4 pound a beer then you want to at least be able to go to the loo!! Hyde Park has the same problem. And in the time of a recession when 90 quid is on the way to a full price festival ticket where you can see many a band (at least 50) then why are you going to pay that much for one? Ok they’re living legends. But I want to see these money making venues sorting their act out and delivering the public more for their money. I am a lady don’t you know. Who needs to powder her nose from time to time.

Here’s a little video I made.

Other things Becki Burrows has been getting up to this week -
I went to see Chk Chk Chk or !!! at the Electric Ballroom. I love this band – but I was a little disappointed. Last time I saw Nic Offer he was far more sexual on stage and I have great memories about him gyrating onstage to the speakers. Yes. Sex can be a very amusing addition to a live show. I wanted more of that – but Nic Offer (lead singer) didn’t seem as keen as I did. *Devastation*. But bloody hell* – I hardly recognised him when he came on stage – he’s cut his hair, lost a load of weight. The crowd boo’ed when the band didn’t do an encore. But hey, they are still good.. I just think this is a band you should see at a festival. In the spirit of things. I also went to see Autokratz at Hoxton Bar and Grill. Really good. Really really good. I just wish it hadn’t been a Tuesday night with work on the next day. Scowl. That’s when you feel like you’re surrounded by students and the jealous factor hits you as you’re friend asks if you want another drink and danger signals bleep in your mind and you become fully aware of the 9 – 5 shift.

*I never (hardly ever) swear but I have just come back from an Oasis concert and I feel it is only appropriate to fuck fuckity fuck it when you’re delivering a blog about britpop music. Oh sh*t there go the sponsors..

I am listening to White Denim. Chew Lips. David Bowie. Blur. And Oasis. And my myspace band of the month are http://www.myspace.com/therumbleband. Their myspace pic sucked me in. Live and learn…
This is the video

Hello all,

Jack has a lovely little competition for you to get involved in and if you do, you could win two tickets to the 1234 Shoreditch Festival on Sunday 26th July.

In order to whet your appetite, here are just some of the acts you can expect to see from 12-9 in Shoreditch Park on the three stages:

Main Stage: Patrick Wolf, The Rakes, Ox Eagle Lion Man, Flashguns and Polly Scattergood…

Second Stage: Chrome Hoof, A Place To Bury Strangers, Ulterior, Factory Floor and Kasm…

Electronic Stage: Krazy Baldhead (Ed Banger), Autokratz (Kitsune), Crystal Fighters….

Then, as if that is not enough excitement for one day, the action will be continuing at no less than 12 after parties running until 2am which will be held in venues across Shoreditch, including; The Old Blue Last, The Queen of Hoxton, Bar Music Hall, Electricity Shrowrooms and The Legion.

If you are the lucky winner of our little competition you can two free tickets to the whole thing!

That’s right, two tickets to the 1234 festival and all the after parties for nothing!

Well not nothing, there has to be a competitive element here otherwise it is not a competition. And so, in order to be in with a chance of winning, Jack wants you to send in your best impressions of the 1234 logo, an image which has been christened in the office as Pigeon-head. Send us a picture of you trying your hardest to look like this fabled creature and if it makes us laugh until a little bit of wee comes out then you shall be the lucky winner!

Send in your pictures to jtv@whos-jack.co.uk

Happy snapping!

I’ve got a real problem with La Roux. There are 2 absolutely cracking remixes of her first 2 s

I’ve got a real problem with La Roux.

There are 2 absolutely cracking remixes of her first 2 singles out there:

‘In For The Kill (Skream’s Let’s Get Ravey remix)’, which sees the original get the ever-growing dubstep treatment.

…and…

‘Quicksand (autoKratz Drags to Riches remix)’, which loops all the best bits of the original to create a piece which is about a million times better than the first.

Now along comes the ’ok-ish’ ’Bulletproof ‘ and I find myself desperately searching for remix of it rather than appreciating the single for what it is. Where’s the repeatitive vocals slicing through a heavy bassline? Where’s the electronic twist? Why’s she singing so much??

I’m just not sure who I should be awarding the praise to here. La Roux’s original music for inspiring great remixes? Or those that make La Roux better be doing the remixing? And consequently, should I bother with buying the album? Or seeing them at this year’s Reading Festival?

My questions about the London-based electro-pop duo are only emphasised by accusations made against Elly Jackson that the ‘magic of the music’ didn’t seem to translate into her performance at this year’s Glastonbury;the poor girl was even accused of being ‘awkward’ and ‘mumsy’ on stage, which can’t be great news for the quiffed-creator of the 3rd biggest single of the year (‘In For The Kill’) who’s constantly being compared to blonde, kooky glamourpuss Little Boots.

On the other hand however, the album seems to be receiving rave reviews, some hailing her as a new Annie Lennox in style and androgyny, bringing back the synthy-pop era of the 80’s…without the cheese-factor.

Oh La Roux. Will we ever make up our minds about you?
