Tonight, on WordPress.com, we launched Email Subscriptions.

You can now subscribe to this blog via email and get nicely formatted posts delivered in your inbox whenever I publish something new. Just put in your email address into the sidebar widget on the right, titled “Email Subscription”. If you are logged in to WordPress.com it’s just 1-click, but anyone can subscribe, you don’t need a WordPress.com account to use this.

With various options like RSS readers, Twitter, and Facebook — I’m still impressed by the usefulness of receiving certain updates by email. Maybe out of habit from my NY subway days, but I still read paidContent.org daily summaries via email every morning.

Like paidContent, what’s also cool about this new email subscription feature is that you can elect to receive digests:

When a user subscribes to a blog they will receive an email containing recent blog posts. The subscriber can select how often this email is sent (the delivery frequency – immediate, daily, or weekly), as well as when this email is sent (the delivery window – a specific day and hour).

If you’d like to learn more, check out the announcement post.

Dougal Campbell

Mark Jaquith

Alex King

Donncha O’Caoimh

* Gera XML, XHTML, e CSS em conformidade com os padrões W3C
* Gerenciamento de ligações integrado
* Estrutura de permalink amigável aos mecanismos de busca
* Suporte extensivo a plug-ins
* Categorias aninhadas e múltiplas categorias para artigos
* TrackBack e Pingback
* Filtros tipográficos para formatação e estilização de texto corretas
* Páginas estáticas
* Múltiplos autores
* Suporte a tags (desde a versão 2.3)

Tech geeks and society chic’s came together for the first official time at the BRAVO Opera Club’s Fall Membership party presented by Chic Meets Geek and held at Automattic Lounge.

This was quite a party with quite a line-up with big names such as Damon Dunn (Former Dallas Cowboy), Mattin Noblia (Top Chef contestant Las Vegas), Randi Zuckerberg (Facebook), Maurice Ramirez (Chief Photographer of MTV) and Matt Mullenweg (WordPress). And talking about line-up, we had quite one going outside of the venue. I felt slightly bad for the people waiting outside, but then I realized for every great event there’s going to be a line, so my bad feeling quickly subsided.

This was definitely not one of the normal art events. With tech demo’s and the amazing Terri Disley playing it up this was one of those BRAVO events that will not be forgotten. My friend Carol Tran was the amazing organizer for the night and she did a fabulous job blending these groups.

There are usually quite a few events specifically gear for the tech or the socialite crews, but there’s never been one geared to blend these two power players all together. I think this could be the event series to do it and I can’t wait for more of these to come. Because while I love attending both types of events if I could attend one that brings the two together and only have to buy one dress that be the best situation.

Check out Vidsf.com’s Olya Lapina’s coverage of the event:

There are no tinfoil hats around my house, but I did recently look into the mobile phone radiation i

There are no tinfoil hats around my house, but I did recently look into the mobile phone radiation issue. My daughter just turned 13, and she was apparently one of the only kids in her grade without a cell phone. This is one of the reasons why:

It’s from a University of Utah study (pdf) and shows how the human head absorbs electromagnetic radiation from a cell phone held up to the ear. Given that kids absorb a lot more of this radiation and that no one seems to be 100% certain what it’s doing to our brains and bodies (especially the brains of kids which have more rapid cell division than adults and might therefore be more susceptible to radiation), I’ve felt that it might be best to hold off on getting cell phones for my kids. That argument worked for the last few years, but it wasn’t going to work forever. So the other day we did get our daughter her first phone – with the following “better safe than sorry” rules:
- Get a low radiation phone
- Use wired headphones to make calls
- Put the phone in your bag (instead of wearing it on your body)

Oh, and it turns out that my iPhone is quite the fountain of radiation, so I’m going to follow rules 2 & 3 as well…

Bonjour! We spent last week in Quebec with our fellow Automattic colleagues for our annual company

Bonjour! We spent last week in Quebec with our fellow Automattic colleagues for our annual company meetup, and we had an amazing time. This was the first time Jon, Isaac, Beau, and I have been in the same room, so it was a pleasure to work side-by-side and kick around some ideas together.

We also got the chance to collaborate with the rest of the Automattic crew to look at how IntenseDebate can integrate with other Automattic projects, and learn how to apply their scaling knowledge to our systems.

While some of the projects aren’t ready to be disclosed yet, here are some general details about what we’re working on (please note that these include long-term projects):

Backend Loading Optimization: We’re really excited about this project. We are currently working on a new method for optimizing how we load comments and trackbacks. This will improve load times even as the volume of comments on your blog continues to increase, as well as correct a couple of bugs. Loading IntenseDebate will be even more seamless!

More Sync Improvements: We had the opportunity to pick the brains of our brilliant WordPress system engineers about the inner-workings of WordPress. We will be adapting some of the code and principles they use to improve the quality of our syncing engine. This is going to be huge for our plugin and will correct those pesky sync discrepancies that have been floating around affecting comment counts and backups.

WordPress Plugin Overhaul: The core of our WordPress plugin was written prior to joining Automattic. Since then our understanding of the WordPress codebase has drastically improved. We have now identified significant portions of the plugin code that can be simplified or optimized making it much more lightweight and perform better. The principles that we are applying in this overhaul will eventually be applied to our integrations with other platforms across the board.

Moderation, Moderation, Moderation! Bug fixes aside, optimizing moderation is high priority. The main moderation project that we’re currently working on is reworking your moderation page. We will be minimizing the time you spend moderating comments and filtering spam, and simplifying your user experience.

Support Documentation and Forums: We’re beefing-up our FAQ and support resources for end users, publishers and developers. This will help everyone to find the answers they’re looking for. More info to come on this one soon.

It’s an exciting time here at IntenseDebate! We’re looking forward to pushing out loads of new code, and we will be depending on you for your feedback. Keep an eye right here on our blog for the latest news.
