How can you put a limit on learning more? The next section may contain that one little bit of wisdom that changes everything.

Pretty self-explanatory isn’t it? It’s a stereo system in a car, you say. Whoa, hold your horses, it’s not that simple. Although some people like to put home stereos in their cars and vans (out of dire need for some sounds), sometimes it just doesn’t work. Yeah, maybe before it could’ve worked just fine, all you needed was radio and a cassette player (or 8 tracks, for the inner dinosaur in you) so sure, lug those big box speakers into the back seat and you’ll be blaring down the highway. But nowadays there are things like CD players and mp3 players and your popup LCD panels and all that techie knickknack you’d think they’d like to build a home theater system right smack on the console of your van. If you don’t know anything about these things but would like to have some sounds in your car anyway, here are some things to know about a car stereo.

As mentioned above, at first units and speakers from home audio systems and professional markets were just simply installed into vehicles. However, they were not well suited to the extremes of temperature and vibration which are a normal part of the environment of an automobile. Car stereo enthusiasts were not satisfied with the sound quality of regular car sound systems, and with the advent of the CD player, they really had to start modifying some of these home stereos in order to work well in a car environment and voila!, now we have the modern car stereo.

If you have a new car, first hand bought, say from about 90 to present, chances are you already have a “factory” car stereo in your car. It means the car manufacturer already included a car stereo system in your car, unless specified in the car model but most often this is the case. Some car manufacturers make their own car stereos, like BMW which includes a pretty decent car stereo package head unit and speakers. It is a standard which comes with all their cars (which isn’t surprising considering that BMW is included in the league of “luxury car manufacturers”). Or like Mercedes Benz or Volkswagen, they use car stereo systems from a German audio manufacturer called Blaupunkt.

A standard car stereo (also called a head unit) usually includes an auto-reverse tape deck, a CD player and sometimes the optional changer – a device which automatically changes the CD in play. On newer car models, the car stereo can also play mp3s and other digital Audio file types like WMA and AAC, whether on a CD or a memory device which can be hooked up to the head unit.

The car stereo head unit is connected to several speakers. Older car models usually just had one speaker mounted underneath the dashboard, pointing through perforations towards the front windshield. The standard for car stereo nowadays is a pair of “tweeters” (used to bring out high treble) on the driver side/front passenger side dashboard, a pair of normal “mid” speakers on both doors, sometimes even the backseat passenger doors if it’s a large car and larger speakers capable of bringing out low ends at the back portion of the backseats.

Your car stereo is probably ok as it is, as car manufacturers ensure that the audio products that come with their cars can handle most driver’s listening demands. But if you think that what you have isn’t enough, you can always CUSTOMIZE.

As reported on abc news today, a brighter opportunity is beginning to spring up for the auto industry in a town in southern California. An estimated 1500 new jobs are now available as one new car maker, Tesla opens a new factory in Downey in an old facility belonging to NASA.

The community has been revived with hopes about this new opportunity that promises to cut the 15% unemployment rate in Southern California.

This is the greenest auto manufacturing plant in North America says Elon. This new S model will go about 300 miles on a single charge. Elon Musk, Founder of Tesla motors says it’s a move to speed up the manufaturing of electric cars by five or ten years pace.

An Ohio woman was injured on November 23 after falling asleep and crashing into two parked tractor-trailers.  Police described the woman as suffering a “moderate injury.”

Falling asleep while driving is a considerable problem in America and elsewhere. One report indicates that driver drowsiness may contribute to as many as 20 to 24 percent of accidents.  A study of single vehicle tractor-trailer crashes indicated that 52 percent of the crashes were fatigue related with almost 18 percent of the drivers involved admitting to falling asleep prior to the accidents.  Studies and common sense tell us that a driver is aware of their fatigue prior to actually falling asleep but drivers do not always respond appropriately to the warning signs of fatigue.

Henry Ford, perhaps the first businessman to market driving and automobiles to the world, famously wrote in his 1922 book “My Life and Work” that:

“I will build a car for the great multitude. It will be large enough for the family, but small enough for the individual to run and care for. It will be constructed of the best materials, by the best men to be hired, after the simplest designs that modern engineering can devise. But it will be low in price that no man making a good salary will be unable to own one — and enjoy with his family the blessing of hours of pleasure in God’s great open spaces.”

Armed with ambition and determination, Ford did exactly that. From Detroit, the Model T was introduced into the marketplace circa 1908, quickly becoming the commodity of the new century. It was affordable, easy to learn and repair. And with a network of local distributors, the car rapidly flooded onto American streets and into American homes, much like Miley Cyrus and Robert Pattinson have broken into the hearts of teenage girls everywhere.

‘heeeeey, it’s a party in the USA!’

Such was the gusto of Ford’s marketing that in 1931, Aldous Huxley depicted Ford as the Christ of AD 2540 London, and his systems of mass production as the bedrock of a homogeneous, mass-produced society in “Brave New World”. Little did Ford know that even today, his vision would become so ingrained in the American psyche.

In the quote above, we can see a logic emerging. “No man” “will be unable to own one”, or “enjoy with his family”, the “blessings of hours of pleasure in God’s great open spaces”.  Engineering, machinery, motoring. This is the realm of men.

Akin to the Futurist Manifesto by F. T. Marinetti (written just 1 year after the introduction of the model T), Ford sees a world in which, through the car, man is able to be the king of his family and the ruler of his world. He loves his home and he loves his country. By embracing the car, he is able to drive closer to God. After all, we all know driving is a spiritual activity – it’s a form of meditation through which manliness can be achieved. Manhood is defined by what’s under the hood.

However, there’s no logical reason for masculinity and motoring to be linked so strongly, but even today we can see this belief, this mythology is repeated wherever we look.

Deep within Ford’s mainstreaming of automobiles and automotive culture in general, somewhere along the way, this mythology was attached to it, and carried forth even to the current day. Throughout 20th century American popular culture, the idea that ‘car is man’ was repeated in every conceivable way that today, we accept it as truth. Motoring is synonymous with masculinity.

‘hmm, which to pick? The car, the girl, or the cougar….?’

That’s the myth. Over the next few weeks (or however long it takes), we’ll be looking at how Ford’s vision has dug and entrenched itself into the logic of a nation and the ego of a people. From NASCAR to Nightrider, bikers to Barbie dolls, we’ll look at specific examples from US pop culture over the past 100 years, looking at how driving has been driven by gender.

Maybe then, we can debunk this myth. We live in different times to Henry Ford. With the collapse of the US car industry, perhaps now’s the time to rethink how we approach motoring and driving, or atleast the ways that it’s marketed to the masses. Let’s re-examine the mythology of the American automobile…

“The US dollar has hit a 14-year low against the Japanese yen with low interest rates in the US making the greenback less attractive to investors.”

According to BBC News, the US dollar has slipped to 86.5 yen. It seemed to have lost its name as ‘world currency.’ With low interest rates and unstable economy within the US, the investors are ditching the US dollars and finidng an alternative (such as Euro, Yen, or gold). This has significantly affected the US dollar to fall. Investors wanted safe, high-profit currency; not low-profit, unstable US Dollar.

While the US Dollar slipped to 86.5 yen, other currencies such as Euro, Yen, or gold have increased dramatically. The price of gold was especially surprising. The price of gold was steadly rising for last 5 years! This significantly increased especially during the last 2 years when there was a global economic recession. Investors wanted more safe investments. So they chose gold.

Yet, I do not think the fall in US dollar is a bad news for US automobile companies or export companies. As the value of US dollar compared to other major currencies has fallen, the exporting companies have gained price advantage over other companies in the country with high currency. Also this will allow companies in the US to gain more control of the domestic market as other companies based on the country with high currency compared to the US dollar will lose a price advantage.

Japanese exporting companies would be seriously concerned about this situation. As 40% of its economy is based on exporting, it is a serious matter related to the recovery of economic downfall in Japan.

La Mini fête cette année son 50ème anniversaire avec une version contemporaine de la Mini Cooper S 1966 psychédélique de George Harrison. Cet exemplaire unique a été offert à Olivia Harrison, la veuve du Beatle décédé.

Ci-dessus, on voit à droite le modèle de 1966 et à gauche celui de 2009; ci-dessous, le modèle de 1966. À l’origine, cette dernière était noire et George Harrison l’avait fait peinturer à la mode de l’époque. Il l’avait reçue en cadeau de Brian Epstein, le gérant des Beatles, qui en avait donné une à chacun des membres du groupe. On peut voir celle de George dans le film ”Magical mystery tour”.

A l’aube d’un 20° siècle à la fois mystique et cartésien, technologique et barbare, libéré et concentrationnaire, deux entités nées du même terreau de la révolution industrielle ont vu, alors que rien ne les y prédisposait, leur trajectoire évoluer si ce n’est de manière similaire, du moins comparable. Un étonnant mimétisme rythme la vie de ces deux symboles qui ont participé à l’œuvre émancipatrice d’une société sclérosée par des politiques et des traditions héritées du siècle précédent.

NAISSANCE

C’est en 1905 que nait ce groupe dont la mission de libération des masses laborieuses le mènera vers l’international.

3 ans plus tard, la longue route qui conduira notre second protagoniste au statut de multinationale débute dans l’anonymat. Pourtant, il accompagnera bientôt la reconnaissance de statut social et l’appropriation de la liberté individuelle de la classe moyenne américaine et mondiale.

DIVERGENCE

Pendant 60 ans l’ascension sera irrégulière mais constante.

Pourtant, en 1974, alors indéboulonnable premier constructeur automobile mondial, General Motors vacille légèrement en décidant le premier dégraissage massif de son histoire. Une trajectoire inverse de celle du PS d’alors, petit parti dans un PAF dominé par l’UDR et le FNRI les deux formations de droite hégémoniques. En élisant François Mitterrand au poste de premier secrétaire en 1971 il allume la mèche qui provoquera l’explosion de 1981.

1981 justement, année au cours de laquelle GM connaitra, pour la première fois depuis 1920, de sévères pertes financières. Dans le même temps, les socialistes français atteignent le nirvana électoral en plaçant l’un des siens au poste de président de la république française.

VASES COMMUNICANTS

La période de maturité signe la fin du parallélisme et le début des montagnes russes. Pendant la crise le PS monte aussi vite qu’il ne tombe lors des périodes de croissance, croisant à ce moment un GM en plein renouveau.

L’après-guerre sera moins rose pour les socialistes qui en France comme ailleurs en Europe entreront dans une longue phase d’exclusion du pouvoir et d’opposition. Plus occupés à régler une schizophrénie qui les déchire. Entre romantisme révolutionnaire et réal politique, ils laissent la place libre aux partis de droite. Les USA vivent durant les 30 glorieuses l’âge d’or de l’automobile qui voit l’émergence d’un continent monté sur roues. GM profite d’un pouvoir d’achat en constante augmentation, d’un besoin de reconnaissance jamais assouvi et d’une faible concurrence japonaise dont on ne voit pas encore qu’elle sera capable de rééditer avec 4 roues la même success story qu’avec 2.

Nouveau croisement au début des années 80. Le PS retrouve alors une dynamique perdue depuis le Front Populaire. Irrégulière certes, la trajectoire de la gauche au pouvoir n’en reste pas moins stable jusqu’en 1995, année de défaite électorale et de retour de la droite. En revanche, la courbe de GM décroit inexorablement avec en 1991 la fermeture de 21 usines !

RAPPROCHEMENT

Heureusement, ou plutôt malheureusement si l’on est de gauche, GM va bientôt se sentir moins seul sur la pente glissante du déclin.

Débuté en 1995, même si Lionel Jospin fait illusion en 1997 en acceptant la pomme empoisonnée offerte par sorcière Chirac, la descente se poursuit implacablement. Ne récoltant que des votes par dépit, les socialistes ne gagnent plus réellement les élections (ils bénéficient d’un vote de protestation principalement). Pire encore, depuis 2005, ce ne sont que des défaites qui s’accumulent, accentuant le mimétisme avec GM. La convergence des trajectoires est achevée quand General Motors  malgré la vente de 9 millions de véhicules dans le monde, perd dans le même temps 10,6 milliards $. Le PS est alors le partis comptant le plus d’adhérents. Intéressant de noter à ce sujet à quel point puissance et popularité ne sont pas forcément compatibles avec rentabilité.

Plus troublant encore, le même mal est la cause de leurs problèmes. GM assistant impuissant à l’ascension de Toyota qui devient au cours de la même période la compagnie automobile la plus rentable du monde. Toyota, adversaire méprisé et raillé pendant des années, aujourd’hui exemple à suivre par toute la branche, et principalement GM. Le PS est lui affaiblit par la montée en puissance de partis jusqu’alors cantonnés à des niches politiques tels que le NPA (alors encore appelé LCR), ou même le FN qui en 2002 s’est largement servi dans l’électorat ouvrier traditionnel du principal parti de gauche. Comme pour GM, la menace vient d’adversaires jugés au départ indignes de la compétition, plus agressifs et surtout à l’écoute de leur clientèle. Cette dégringolade ayant même été filmée pour la postérité, en 2002 pour le PS avec le film de Serge Moati sur la défaite de Jospin à la présidentielle. Pendant que Mickael Moore produisait un documentaire caustique et désespéré « Roger and Me » en 1989 sur la situation des habitants de Flint, Michigan, abandonnés par Général Motors.

Face à la chute, les réactions ont été presque similaires : l’emprunt incontrôlé et irraisonné aux concurrents. Le PS pompant allègrement ses idées aux partis qui lui taillent des croupières (Verts, extrême gauche, droite modérée suivant les époques et les succès électoraux) ; tandis que GM tentait en vain d’adapter le Toyota Production System à ses usine sans en comprendre l’essence (amusant ça !) et surtout sans mesurer l’importance du travail d’adaptation à réaliser sur les organisations et les hommes avant d’y parvenir. Une question que ne s’est même pas posée le PS, champion du copier/coller.

Le problème se trouve sûrement là : évoluer sans changer. Une maxime transformée en objectif stratégique par nos deux concurrents.

ZOOLOGIE

La gamme de produits offerte par chacun de nos deux protagonistes est à classer résolument dans la catégorie convergence. GM tout d’abord, sacrifiant au syndrome du court terme s’est lancé dans une suicidaire course à la monoproduction en épuisant le filon SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle, en français : 4×4). Boostées par un formidable effet de mode, les ventes ont porté l’activité de GM pendant quelques années. Pourtant, les Hummer et autres pachydermiques véhicules pour obsédées de la sécurité et complexés du phallus ont vu leurs ventes s’effondrer en 6 mois à peine, tués par le prix du pétrole et la crise financière. En face, les célèbres éléphants du PS cornaquent le parti depuis bientôt 20 ans. En fait depuis que le vieux lion, filon la métaphore animalière, a laissé la place. Habituellement, c’est un homme qui cornaque des éléphants, l’un des points du problème est peut-être là.

Non seulement les produits sont les même, mais ils se comptent dans des proportions équivalentes : Fabius, Jospin, Strauss-Kahn, Royal, Valls, Lang, Hamon, Aubry, Hollande (que ceux que j’ai oublié de m’en veulent pas) pour les socialistes. Pour GM : Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Daewoo, GMC, Holden, Hummer, Opel, Pontiac, Saturn, Saab, Vauxhall. Même si certaine de ces marques font partie du patrimoine américain, elles encombrent aujourd’hui le constructeur et sont devenues pour la plupart des freins au changement, indispensable pour concurrencer de jeunes pousses ambitieuses. Qui a dit « Comme au PS ? ». Je ne vous le fais pas dire.

Pendant ce temps, la terre tourne. Elle tourne tellement d’ailleurs qu’une nouvelle relation involontaire vient de se créer. Le PS a bâti son assise sur un socle publique, la forte majorité de ses adhérents venant de la sphère administrative (fonctionnaires ou employés d’entreprises publiques). Une expérience nouvelle pour GM, symbole du capitalisme triomphant et aujourd’hui propriété de l’état américain à concurrence de 60% sur décision d’Obama, seule solution pour assurer la survie du constructeur. Entre les promoteurs du maintient du service public à tout prix et les néo fonctionnaires une certaine communion d’esprit devrait se créer rapidement.

ET MAINTENANT ?

Les trajectoires semblent à nouveau se séparer. GM, poussé par l’opinion publique (la même qui achetait des 4×4 il y a deux ans ?) et le gouvernement veut désormais conjuguer les verbes « réduire », « adapter », « simplifier » pour proposer une gamme resserrée au sein d’un groupe de marques rationalisé. Pendant ce temps, du fond de la savane, située comme chacun le sait rue de Solférino dans le 7^ème à Paris et alors qu’on les croyait emportés par le souffle du changement, résonne le pas lourd des éléphants. Pourtant, en créant comité de direction chargé de préparer un programme et un plan de reconquête du pouvoir, Martine Aubry suivait la bonne piste. En nommant à ce comité tous les dirigeants historiques responsables des succès mais surtout des échecs socialistes de ces dernières années, Mme Aubry tente le pari de faire du neuf avec des vieux.

Il ne faut cependant pas croire que le chassé croisé est terminé. Le constructeur automobile ayant déjà annoncé qu’il comptait sur les vraies valeurs de l’Amérique pour se redresser. Parfaitement soutenu en cela par son actionnaire principal, l’état, dont le chef Barak Obama répète à l’envie que l’Amérique n’est pas morte et que sa renaissance passe par la croissance. En clair : courbons l’échine pendant l’orage et tout rentrera dans l’ordre dès la première éclaircie. Comme d’habitude, le monde change plus vite que les idées mais dans ce cas, la fin de l’époque de croissance rapide initiée à la charnière du 19° et du 20° siècle marque le passage d’une économie d’équipement à un marché de remplacement. Un tel bouleversement dans les schémas habituels nécessite plus qu’une simple mise à jour des méthodes.

Quel constat dans ce cas pour le PS ? Tout changer donc mais avec qui ? Quelle transformation radicale pourrait relancer ce parti ? Quel leader charismatique aurait les épaules suffisamment larges pour porter cette lourde tâche ? Un leader à qui tout réussi et qui est déjà parvenu à dépoussiérer un parti vieillissant pour le transformer en machine à gagner. Nicolas Sarkozy bien sûr. Homme de défis et de challenge, il va très vite s’ennuyer dans une UMP volant de succès en succès. N’ayant pour tout nouvel objectif que de trouver une femme plus belle et plus jeune il ressentira vite une inextinguible envie de relever un nouveau challenge. Voilà le nouveau coup de poker de Sarkozy, quitter un parti hégémonique pour faire gagner le PS. Cela n’arrivera probablement jamais mais avouez que ça aurait de la gueule.

Oil & Gas

· Cairn India and its joint venture partners have decided to take up 4 dimensional (4D) seismic survey of Ravva field in the Krishna-Godavari Basin to further explore oil and gas reserves.

· Liquefied gas importer, Petronet LNG Ltd (PLL), is keen to acquire up to 10 per cent stake in ONGC Petro-additions Ltd (OPaL), which is setting up a cracker complex in Gujarat.

OPaL is, a Rs 12,440-crore petrochemicals project, being set up by ONGC at Dahej in Gujarat.

The Adani group-promoted Mundra Port and Special Economic Zone (MPSEZ) is all set to develop a non-LNG port at Hazira.

Hazira Port, which is a joint venture of Shell Gas BV and Total Gaz Electricite Holdings France, issued a letter of intent to the Adani group for developing the port in the booming southern Gujarat industrial belt.

Capital Goods

· State-run Bharat Heavy Electrical (BHEL) has set up a new transformer manufacturing facility at Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh.

This new facility would enable BHEL to produce an additional 12,000 MVA (mega volt ampere) of transformers per annum.

· Pollution control equipment maker Thermax bagged an order worth Rs 477.77 crore from an Orissa-based company for construction of a captive power plant.

Aviation

· The Vijay Mallya-led Kingfisher Airlines led the chart of the loss-making carriers by reporting a massive Rs 1,602 crore in losses in 2008-09, followed by Jet Airways with a loss of Rs 1,032 crore.

Oil Drilling

· Jindal Drilling & Industries has bagged an order worth Rs 635 crore from Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) for hiring a drilling unit for five years.

Metal

· Tata Steel, the world’s sixth largest steel maker, is raising its annual iron ore production by 55 per cent to 17 million tonnes in India over the next two years.

The expansion is expected to cost about Rs 1,100 crore.

Information Technology

·  Satyam Computer Services (rebranded Mahindra Satyam) has received legal notices from 37 companies claiming a refund of $265 million (approximately Rs 1,230 crore), allegedly given as temporary advance.

Automobile

· Mahindra & Mahindra, India’s largest manufacturer of sports utility vehicles, is believed to be in advanced talks with the Tamil Nadu government for establishing an integrated auto facility in the state.

Forging

·  The Kalyani Group’s flagship company Bharat Forge is planning to make a big foray into the power sector with an investment of up to Rs 50,000 crore and a targeted generation capacity of up to 10,000 Mw, over the next 10 years.
