Mitsubishi and the Japan Delivery System Corp think they have a solution to some of the hurdles that

Mitsubishi and the Japan Delivery System Corp think they have a solution to some of the hurdles that stand between apartment dwellers and convenient electric vehicle charging. Launching in Japan today, the duo’s i-Charger system uses the same personal log-in information (a PIN or verification code) that many tenants have for package delivery in large apartment complexes in Japan.

JDS manufactures, sells and manages these home-delivery boxes, and the i-Charger billing and management system will run on JDS servers, accessed through the same system building supervisors have for managing package delivery. As Mitsubishi and JDS put it, the i-Charger product provides a “delivery box” system for retrieving electricity. The idea is to let building supervisors bill individual tenants based on the amount of juice they pull for their plug-in vehicles in a shared parking lot or garage.

While homeowners with a personal garage can have a charge point installed and see the electricity costs added to their regular utility bill, apartment complexes will require a smart charging system with secure login and billing features so that residents are charged fairly and accurately.

Meeting the needs of urban residents through systems like the i-Charger holds particular importance in the effort to accelerate mass adoption of electric vehicle. Short-distance, stop-and-go city driving represents the lowest-hanging fruit for all-electric vehicles. And as IBM Vice President for Energy & Utilities Allan Schurr explained earlier this year at an event in San Francisco, “I don’t know any automaker that is going to throw away [a sizable share] of the market opportunity and sell cars only to those that have access to garages.”

The bulk of the vehicle market, said Schurr, is made up of apartment dwellers, urban homeowners and others who don’t own a garage. Yet much of the early work to deploy residential charging infrastructure has focused on tackling solutions for a single-family home with a garage — how to streamline interactions with the utility, for example, speed up the installation process and reduce costs for the homeowner.

As General Motors’ Britta Gross, who heads up infrastructure commercialization said at the Plug-In 2009 conference in Long Beach, Calif., home charger installations are more like cable or Internet installations: cheap, quick and low maintenance. Large apartment buildings need similar access and options.

The i-Charger systems sounds like it could address the billing issue for apartment complexes, but it leaves the open question of what will motivate property owners to invest in these systems in the first place. If and when plug-in vehicles go mainstream enough to spur building owners to provide these systems the way they might provide a laundry room today (in order to lure tenants), that may not be an issue. In the meantime, however, this is where some electric car and charge point makers hope new building codes can come into play, requiring property owners to outfit new or significantly renovated buildings with charging infrastructure.

The perception that General Motors, Chrysler, and Ford were technologically and environmentally-infe

The perception that General Motors, Chrysler, and Ford were technologically and environmentally-inferior to their Japanese rivals has long persisted. But long before the economic recession and the federal buyouts, General Motors and Chrysler –as well as Ford –were well on the way to adopting lean principles. Josh Cable at Industry Week writes that “They were trumpeting the flexibility of retooled assembly plants. And they were narrowing the productivity gap between themselves and their Japanese rivals.”

GM, Chrysler, and Ford, have all been implementing lean principles, according to the 2008 Harbour Report. Chrysler’s 7.7% reduction in labor hours per vehicle brought the manufacturer dead-even with Toyota; Ford cut its labor hours per-vehicle by 3.7%, and GM’s slight reduction garnered the fifteenth straight year of productivity improvement. In fact, former GM CEO Ron Atkinson noted that it was GM’s adoption of lean principles that enabled the company to offer 5-year, 100,000-mile warranties on its vehicles. Ford is investing $550 million to retool its Wayne, Michigan assembly plant to make it lean and green, and that plant will produce the new Focus and an electric-battery Focus.

Although “the change may seem small, it will cut manufacturing petroleum by 10 tons and CO2 emissions by 15 tons, and cut the storage bin’s weight by 10 percent – thereby saving the end consumer a small amount of fuel, as well.

Bioplastics, notes this article by triplepundit, “is a burgeoning industry, and the material is showing up everywhere from cell phone casing to grocery bags.

Well, it’s now been almost a month since I last posted (goodness, time flies by fast) but I have not forgotten. Took my truck out the other day for the first time in about 2-3 months. Poor thing needs to get cleaned up, but I’d really like to get a new motor and trans. in it one of these days. Valves are going on the motor and the trans. slips a bit, at least, it feels sort of sluggish. Maybe that, and more, will get taken care of in the coming year… hopefully. Still holding off on getting a motorcycle, just don’t have the funds for it at this time, which is part of the reason nothing has happened with my truck.

Switching gears a little bit, I’ve noticed that the Nightster review has been getting a lot of hits. That makes me glad, a quick thank you to everyone who has looked at it, I hope that it has helped. I still think the Nightster is an amazing piece of machinery.

Now, to leave you with a good video. If you pick things up in this one around the one minute mark it’ll be best. Enjoy.

A car audio, dvd, system as well as a car video system will bring you the, dvd, best of both media worlds. A system like this could be great when taking a break on long trips. You can just pull into the rest area, lay your seat back, turn on a movie, and feel like you are in a movie theater while you are resting.

Many overhead car DVD players come with accessories such as a small remote and an IPOD docking system, dvd, . It is recommended that you hire a professional to install your car DVD player. You can also try to install it yourself if you have the skill and know how. An interesting point to make is that an overhead DVD player is not the only kind of player, dvd, available for your vehicle. There are some that do not need to be installed, in fact, they fit over the front seats and face the rear passengers. Batteries, dvd, operate this type of car, dvd, DVD player and some even come with an adapter plug to be used in your cigarette lighter. As you would expect, this type is the cheaper of the two, dvd, options. You can readily buy one for under $100. Prices for the overhead car DVD types will cost you more and will vary depending on the name brand you purchase. These prices range from $150 to over $500.

Most North American cars have one set of bright lights on the back, of course those are the brake lights. But some American cars and most European cars have other bright lights on the rear: rear fog lights.

If you’re not familiar with this concept, then you probably assumed their lights were malfunctioning or their break lights were “stuck.”

Rear fog lights make it much easier for the vehicle behind you to see your car when fog, rain or snow is heavy.

Some rear fog lights are a pair of lights mounted low on the rear bumper. Other cars have a single light, mounted near the driver’s side rear turn signal.

There are debates about the validity of rear fog lights. Some claim they can be confused with brake lights, others agree but believe that is still safer than not seeing the vehicle until it is too late.

In the photo of the instrument cluster, the icon on the left is the front fog light indicator and on the right is the rear fog light indicator.

Some cars have separate switches for front and rear fogs, other cars have one switch that activates both.

Studies have shown that in North America more people inappropriately use their fog lamps in dry weather than use them properly in poor weather

Use of software in industries, such as automotive, aerospace, medical devices and telecommunication networks has increased exponentially. As the complexity increases, “quality” becomes a challenge. Along with this, the market dynamics leading to continuous innovation, ever increasing market pressure to reduce the cost and rapidly changing compliance regulations, makes the system & product development even more challenging.

To meet up with the challenges, you need integrated automation for product portfolio management, product requirement management, product architecting, design, modeling and simulation etc. A collaborative development enabled with properly integrated quality management solutions has become most critical for successful product development.

New Lab Increases Region’s Car Clout

We’ve written about electric vehicle news in Portland races and Eugene launches, as well as new battery technology being developed by Albany’s Oregon Freeze Dry and EnerG2 a Seattle start-up. Now, there’s interesting car news from the University of Washington and Lamorghini of Italy. They have formed a new advanced composites lab at UW.

UW has a history of composite research in aerospace from it’s years of working with Boeing. The new lab will develop advanced automotive applications of composite technology to reduce weight while increasing the strength of new vehicles. These developments are critical to improving automotive fuel economy and safety. This collaborative lab is a welcome investment in our region and a new arrow in our car cluster quiver.

Below is a lead to the UW PR release and a cool video of a Lamborghini Murcielago. Now here’s a place that the oft overused term “Awesome!” is appropriate.

…

…

UW’s newly named ‘Lamborghini Lab’ brings composite parts to sports-car arena

Oct. 6, 2009

A partnership between the University of Washington and the Italian sports-car company Automobili Lamborghini has been formalized, and the presidents of both organizations today attended the naming ceremony of the UW’s Automobili Lamborghini Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory.

The UW is the first university in the country to collaborate with Lamborghini. The company has committed to provide substantial funding for lab equipment and support for UW undergraduate and graduate students.

“This partnership is a win-win situation,” said Matthew O’Donnell, dean of the UW’s College of Engineering. “It further establishes the Pacific Northwest as a leader in composites research, it funds equipment for a UW engineering lab and it provides students with valuable research experience that’s directly tied to real-world applications.”

“Partnerships between the UW and industry leaders like Lamborghini give our students the advantage of working on real-world problems,” said UW President Mark Emmert. “We are excited that UW researchers and Lamborghini engineers will be collaborating to bring innovative materials to the automobile industry.” Full release…

Chevrolet has finally unveiled the details of it’s Cruze world car in U.S. spec along with som

Chevrolet has finally unveiled the details of it’s Cruze world car in U.S. spec along with some crisp HD photos. Of course I haven’t driven the damn thing, but half the fun of talking about new cars is speculation. Will be better than the old dog Cobalt it replaces? What’s up with the smaller displacement engines? Will they be any good? Is this Cruze going to end up being another awful rental car? Well only time and some proper test driving will tell. But we’ve got specs and pics and i think that’s enough to have a nice conversation over, so let’s get to it!!

The Cruze is an all new car Chevy has come up with. From the outside, the Cruze looks like a proper step towards modern for Chevy’s compact sedan offering. The front looks like it means business. The headlights are sort of this angular Nike swish that come come away from the grill and shoot back into the bodywork. A subtle line streaks beneath the belt line for the length of the car in sort of a BMW 5 series kind ofway until you get to the taillights…which again remind me of a BMW 5 series. Really, it’s a compliment…I swear. The dimensions of the car are a bit bigger everywhere. It’s been lengthened to give more backseat leg room, widened for better handling and more shoulder room, and heightened for more headroom. All in all, this Cruze is quite handsome and loads more interesting to look at than that defunked Cobalt and should give you the feeling of being in a bigger car than you really are.

Chevy intend for this to be a world car, so I’m sure they’ve done their homework. At least I hope they have because they really can’t afford to be wasting anymore [of our] money. But let’s not forget that they have developed a habit of tuning their chassis’s on the Nurburgring in order to compete with European offerings, something Dodge/Chrysler still hasn’t caught onto *shakes head*. So it should handle crisply and that’s promising. I drove a Cobalt for a week and i couldn’t wait to get back in my 93 Honda Accord. Yeah, that’s right. A 93 Accord was a damn blessing.

In the power department, the Cruze will be offered up with two engine choices as well as two transmissions. We get a turbocharged 1.4 liter flat 4 cylinder engine making around 138hp and 148 ft-lbs of torque or you can level up and get the 1.8 with a bit more horsepower, but not as much torque. Personally, I’m not sure I like these. I’m not sure how much the car weights, but wouldn’t a 2.0 liter or 2.4 have been more appropriate? Oh well, this is all a game of fuel economy anyhow. the 1.4 turbo is supposed to get 40 miles to the gallon. Nice! Both of the tranmissions offered with these engines have 6 gears and will come in manual or automatic. If I do get the opportunity to review the car for you guys, I’ll get the auto box since that’s what most will likely buy.

The interior is a quantum leap ahead of the Cobalt. The Cruze just looks cool inside. It’s the best way I can describe it from the pictures. I’m not counting on all the materials to be of the highest quality, but it all does give the appearance at least of being more upscale than its predecessor. I would, however, count on more soft touch materials on the arm rest, doors, steering wheel and dashboard. The silver plastics against the glossy piano black plastics is a nice contrast. All of the controls look like they have been laid out in an ergonomic fashion against an interesting center stack and the LCD display screen doesn’t look like it’s based off of a something built during the 80’s

There’s still a lot that we don’t know about the Cruze. But, on paper, it looks like it should be an interesting and refreshing entry into it’s respective market. I imagine direction competition coming from Mazda3, Ford Focus, Kia Forte and Honda Civic(good Lord they need to come out with a new one of those!!!). I’ve got my eye on you, Government Motors.

To see an annoying promotional video for the 2011 Chevy Cruze, check below!!

**note**: It’s better with the sound off

SUMMARY: Looking for new source of traffic beyond the fierce battleground of the search engine resul

SUMMARY: Looking for new source of traffic beyond the fierce battleground of the search engine results page? The combination of video content and social media can create a powerful new channel to reach potential customers.

See the six strategies an online guitar accessory retailer used to create product demonstration videos and share that content with blogs, video sharing sites and other third parties. The strategy captures 65,000 video views a day, and has doubled annual sales.

Aaron Miller, President, ProGuitarShop.com, sees online video as the perfect medium for selling the retailer’s boutique electric guitar effects pedals.

In late 2007, ProGuitarShop.com was primarily an eBay retailer struggling to build traffic to their website. Miller’s team created a new strategy that avoided focusing on search engines. Instead, they built traffic through social networks, mostly by video marketing through YouTube.

Two years and more than 550 videos later, the team captures about 45,000 unique video views daily on YouTube and between 15,000 and 20,000 on their website — all from a niche audience. Sales have doubled each year since the effort began.

“Two years ago, our website was nothing. It was not a viable revenue source,” Miller says. “Our growth is all because of the videos.”

To help other marketers do more with online video, we asked Miller to share six strategies that brought ProGuitarShop.com that growth:

Strategy #1. Use videos to highlight product features

Video offers an ideal way to explore product features and benefits that aren’t conveyed through photos or text. Consider creating videos that guide visitors through a product’s key features or demonstrate how it works.

For example, the team’s videos showcase the sounds and features that each guitar pedal offers. The demonstrations are not objective reviews — they carefully highlight a product’s good points and avoid its drawbacks.

“We don’t approach them as commercials, but we do approach them as marketing,” Miller says.

For musicians, the videos provide vital information on whether a product is right for them. It would be difficult to know if a pedal would give customers a desired result without first hearing and seeing it in action.

- Create a library

The team hosts its videos in a website library, even after they stop selling a product. There aren’t many free resources for this information, which positions ProGuitarShop.com as an industry resource.

- Use third-party social sites

The videos are posted to the team’s YouTube channel, website and on third-party sites (more on this below). Each YouTube page allows commenting, and the videos can be easily embedded into other websites or forums.

The team does not offer social features at their website. Instead, videos are featured on the homepage, product pages and in a video library without commentary.

Strategy #2. Consistently generate content

Providing a large library of content that appeals to a wide range of customers requires a regular stream of new videos. Miller considers this a vital tactic to his success. He estimates that ProGuitarShop.com posts at least one new video each day.

“We need to continually feed our audience consistent, relevant information in order to maintain our traffic.”

Posting at least one video per day, rather than five per week, is important.

“If you dump a bunch of videos at once, or only add them sporadically, you’ll lose your audience. You’ll lose everything. Or you won’t build anything,” he says.

Strategy #3. Select products carefully

Miller’s team does not create a video for every product they sell. Instead, products are chosen based on several factors, including:

- Business impact

Products that will likely provide a strong return on investment are given priority.

- Time in market

The team is more likely to create a video for a product they are the first to offer.

- Buzz and hype

Highly anticipated and demanded products are more likely to have videos. This strategy is part of the team’s social media focus. By showcasing a new product in video, they’re more likely generate traffic and later sales, Miller says.

“I might not necessarily make money on that product, but I might have lots of people talking about me online and my company’s name becomes better known, rather than just a result in a search engine.”

Strategy #4. Answer questions and interact

Commenting is a significant activity on social video sites like YouTube. Marketers should embrace the interactive nature of these channels.

Miller’s team captures the majority of their video views on YouTube. Although the ProGuitarShop.com website does not offer commenting or a forum, YouTube viewers are free to comment on the videos.

The team makes an effort to interact with people who comment. They often answer questions about products directly on YouTube.

This effort is less about customer service and marketing and more about encouraging discussion around the team’s videos and products.

“These guys that write comments are forum users,” Miller says. “We want people to talk about this all over the place.”

Strategy #5. Send videos to third parties

Sharing video content with other sites helps generate leads and brand awareness for your site.

Miller’s team regularly features their videos on more than 50% of their product manufacturers’ websites. These arrangements offer a great opportunity for the team, as the videos are branded through graphics and audio.

Smaller manufacturers such as Pigtronix, alongside larger companies such as Blackheart, host the videos on their websites. Some larger companies supplement the team’s costs or pay for videos to be made, Miller says.

- Bloggers

Keeping with their social media strategy, the team maintains a network of bloggers to whom they send videos. Miller says that bloggers often use them because they’re free content, and content creation is labor intensive.

“It’s a marketing effort on our part, but we’re also scratching their backs,” Miller says.

Strategy #6. Maintain high quality

Make sure the videos you create are both valuable to customers, and strong enough to convince other sites to host the content.

Miller’s team would not have achieved as much success if the videos were not high-quality. Manufacturers would be less likely to use them, and consumers would be less likely to share them.

To ensure quality, the team’s video demos are conducted by experienced professionals who take their time to:
o Pick a pedal
o Determine what type(s) of music it applies to
o Research its unique sounds
o Video tape the demo
o Write a script to describe the product
o Edit and upload

Warren Buffett, the closely watched investor and mega-billionaire, expects that 20 years from now, all cars will run on electricity. At least, that’s what he told Rice University business students at his Omaha headquarters this month when asked for his thoughts on peak oil and replacements for “carbon fuels,” the Houston Chronicle reports (hat tip Gasgoo and GuruFocus).

Such a rapid transition to electric vehicles could work out well for BYD, the China-based developer of electric vehicles and lithium-ion batteries in which Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway investment firm holds a 10 percent stake. But some other forecasts suggest we’re more likely to see a mix of fuels — including gasoline and electricity — powering vehicles for some time to come, rather than a wholesale switch to plug-ins by 2030.

The analysts at Lux Research certainly see hurdles ahead for this giddy growth prediction. Battery prices, says Lux, have to come way, way down for plug-in vehicles to go truly mass, and that will take time. In a report released last month, Lux forecast that even if oil costs $200 a barrel in 2020, just 4 percent of vehicles sold globally will be all-electric or plug-in hybrid because of the high costs of the battery technology. According to Lux, plug-in hybrids could sell 3 million units per year by 2020 if the price of oil reaches those heights, while hybrids can be expected to sell that many by 2020 regardless of oil prices.

Buffett, however, isn’t alone in his high hopes for the adoption of electric vehicles. Google’s (s goog) “Clean Power by 2030″ proposal, released last fall, called for almost all of new car sales in the U.S. by 2030 to be plug-ins — although the search giant said such a transition, in combination with other components of a plan to kick the U.S. fossil fuel habit, would cost $4.4 trillion (in undiscounted 2008 dollars). Meanwhile, research firm Frost & Sullivan predicted earlier this year that in China, hybrid cars will be truly mass-market by 2011 or 2012, with the country’s fleet beginning a minimum 10-year transition to plug-in hybrids and battery-electric vehicles as early as 2010.

Li Lu, investor and adviser for Buffett-backed BYD Auto, said during a roundtable discussion at this year’s Fortune Brainstorm Green conference, “We’ve been growing 100 percent for the last five to six years, and I have no reason to believe we will stop.” If nothing else, aggressive statements from Buffett, one of the world’s highest-profile investors, could help build momentum for the EV market and BYD’s growth.
