So you want a website but don’t know how to get started? Here are a couple of the very basics you’ll need to know and what you’ll need.

1) Domain name(s): After years of using (and increasingly becoming dissatisfied with) GoDaddy, I’m now a huge fan of NameCheap. Go there and search for your chosen domain name. The domain name should contain your company name and/or keywords related to your products or services. It’s best to get the .com name if at all possible, but it’s also a good idea to get other domain extensions as well, for 2 purposes:
a. To have them redirect to your primary site, this increasing the number of inbound links to your site, and
b. So no one else gets the domain name and takes traffic from you that would otherwise go to your site.
It’s also a good idea to have multiple domain names – as they are typically cheap, around $10 / year or less for many. It’s an inexpensive way to get additional visitors to your site and also to have your site rank higher in the search engines for the various keywords in your domain name.

2) Hosting: Now that you have your domain name, you’ll need a place to host your website. Many companies provide this service, and some are better than others. I’m currently in the process of migrating all my websites’ hosting to HostGator. As of this writing, they provide hosting for an unlimited number of domains for as little as $7.95 / month. If you’ve got more than one website, that pricing makes it a no-brainer!

3) An autoresponder: If you’re going to be managing an email list of any kind (which you’ll want to do if you’re marketing online), you’ll need this type of service as it will make your life a lot easier. What does an autoresponder do? It allows you to automatically send emails on a predetermined schedule of your choosing, automate the email list registration and confirmation process, let you segment your lists in different ways, and more. There are many “flavors” of autoresponders on the market, with varying capabilities and pricing structure. One of the best, in my opinion and from what I’ve heard from a large number of highly successful online marketers, is Aweber.

4) A website: you can build your own, either from scratch or from a template or website building software, or you can hire someone to do this for you. There are many considerations that impact how your website is viewed by the search engines, and we’ll cover a lot of this in later articles.

5) Analytics: You’ll want to know how much traffic you’re getting, where it’s coming from, what terms are searched on that bring visitors to your site, and more. A free tool that Google provides is Google Analytics. It’s a small snippet of code that you install on each page of your site that you want measured, and you can set it up to email you every so often (e.g. weekly) with reports that tell you about your site’s visitors. You can get it at www.google.com/analytics.

     Email marketing can be a great tool for expanding your business.  It would be advantageous to develop an email list to market to over and over again, with their permission of course.  It can leave you with a steady stream of customers as long as you are in business.  This email list can serve more than one purpose.  As well as being a constant customer base, your email list is also available to be a test market.  Through them you can send surveys periodically and ask them what they are looking for so you can provide it for them.  This is a great option for any internet marketer.

     What worries some people who are considering beginning an email campaign is being accused of spamming people.  Spam is unsolicited email when those people did not consent to receive email from you.  If you do this, you can get into a lot of trouble you will not want to be in. The people you send unsolicited email to can complain to your Internet Service Provider (ISP).  The result may be that you lose your email account; all the money you spent or all the hard work you may have done to build an email list will have been wasted.  Your Internet Protocol (IP) address and/or domain names will be recorded and placed on a list, called a blacklist.  Once you are on this blacklist you will be prevented from sending email from these sources.  Email marketing will be over for you.

     There are things that you can do to prevent the above from happening.  Actually, there are things you should not do and you will be less likely to be accused of spamming your list.  The first thing you should not do is rent an email list.  Sending an email to a list of people and asking them to join your list is better than sending out a completely unsolicited email, but it can be considered spam, even though you are asking them for permission to send them email; the first email asking permission is still an unsolicited email.  The best thing is to have an opt-in list.  With an opt-in option, people can enter their names and email addresses into your sign-up form which will be sent to you.  An email is sent automatically to them from your autoresponder requiring them to click a link subscribing them to your email list.  If everyone does this, you cannot be accused of spamming them.  Further helping you stay off blacklists is to have an unsubscribe link in every email; it is a requirement.  Following these rules can keep you off of blacklists and keep you earning money from your email list.

Building A Business Value Ladder

In contemplating the building of a business it is going to take time and effort. During this building time find something outside yourself that will pull you through those sticking points. Set goals and adopt a ready position where you move forward fast and prevent getting caught making it perfect. Get it going and then go back and perfect it. At first you will need to learn all skills require to get the job done.  While these learning these skills, find those you enjoy most! When time permits take on the jobs you enjoy most and make them yours, and then find others to do everything else.

By this time you might have your product to market. More on this topic later! When you have determined your product the most important part of any product is the hook that captures the clients interest which is the value of the product. Next you are onto the marketing process where you need a landing page for your visitors to opt-in and provide you with name and e-mail address. Remember it may take seven times seeing your marketing before they will trust you enough to buy. Capture the name and e-mail address in an auto-responder so you can setup follow-up marketing campaigns to deliver subscribers e-mails automatically to close the sale.

You can create a sales process that will sell your products using videos, sales letters and webinars. The sales message needs to communicate: who you are, what product do you have, why the clients needs the product, and indicate how the client can obtain the product. You will need a domain name, a web hosting site, and an autoresponder to retrieve the clients information.
3. Develop a sales process that answers the following questions:
- Who am I?
- What do I have?
- Why should my visitors want it?
- How can they get it?
4. Be sure you have proof of your product’s claims that work! Created a follow-up system with your list to  show them proof.

It basically caters to internet marketers in a system called a 2×8 fixed matrix. Its a $30/month service which gets you unlimited web space, rights to resell your web space, an autoresponder, marketing materials, and much more. It is free until November 7th, i.e. in pre-launch, so the idea is to fill up your matrix before that date. I’m aiming for a hundred or so sign ups myself. Gotta be realistic! Another cool feature is something called SPILLOVER. Very cool idea where your upline (people who signed up before you) gets customers who are placed in your matrix! I can’t think of a way to creatively share the source of my new found resource for not only the tools I need to market here in this wide world of the internet, but the real tools that I as a non techie sort of fellow needs. The training and hand holding support of a company that, yes they will be quite successful on their own, but one that knows and cares about  people that come to lean on them and share through word of mouth, the great job and service that they are providing.
