It is unfortunate, because much of the debate about this new painting (currently on exhibition at the AVA Gallery in Cape Town) will not be about the quality of the art, but all those euphemisms the ANC evokes to suppress freedom of expression – dignity, respect, culture, etc. I feel duty bound to post the picture, then, for two reasons: one, to demonstrate some consistency on this issue and two, to take a stand for freedom of expression, in the same way I did over The Spear. Thus, what follows below is the new painting of President Jacob Zuma, by artist Ayanda Mabulu. Read this blog to see it and, if you do, and you are sensitive about such things, make the choice to be offended and test your own tolerance and constitutional commitment. Choice is the essence of freedom, here is yours.

BACKGROUND: For those unfamiliar with Ayanda Mabulu, he actually predates Brett Murray on the controversy front. In 2010 he held an exhibition entitled ‘Un-Mute My Tongue’ which contained the picture ‘Better Poor Than a Rich Puppet’. Like The Spear, it too contained a representation of Jacob Zuma’s penis. So no one can acuse him of riding on Murray’s coat tails. Yet nothing was made of it, perhaps the definitive indication of the ANC’s and Zuma’s hypocrisy on this subject.

Rylan Steele has created a series of photographs that cause viewers to take a closer look at ordinary workspaces–the clutter and the cleanliness of offices, warehouses and other spaces we inhabit every day but rarely think about.

Amanda Brazier‘s paintings are vivid, geometric, often abstract works of art.  However, like Steele’s photos, they examine the way humans interact with and modify their environment.  Steele, a professor at Columbus State University, and Brazier, a Chattanooga artist, are the featured artists at the AVA Gallery’s Re: Structure exhibit, which opens March 2nd and runs through April 28th.  An opening reception will take place March 2nd at AVA.

Introduction to Copperplate Calligraphy workshop at AVA gallery

Wednesdays, 6:00–8:00pm
Four 2-hour classes
Copperplate calligraphy is a pointed pen hand developed in 17th -century England. We will work with an oblique pen holder, pointed pen nib, India ink and practice pads with grid and slant lines. Our initial focus will be on the amount of pressure applied to our pens to produce thick and thin strokes. We will begin practice with minuscules and later majuscules, which will be grouped according to similar letterforms. All materials will be supplied.
