Many Decembers ago, I was sitting at the bar in the Mansion on Turtle Creek. I’ve never been one to attend bars or restaurants of that caliber and like to commit to the expression “I’m the local pub type”. Needless to say, I can remember the dark wooden walls, the fully equipped bar, and stale hints of good Coltrane. In a weird way, I  started to appreciate the place. I write this blog because it was not what happened at the Mansion, it is what came later..After the music dwindled, I hit the road to uptown. It was about 1 am and I was starving. I stumbled upon Avanti (which is now one of my favorite restaurants). I hit up the moonlight breakfast, listen to a man talk for hours about the difference between Barbera and Merlot, and caught a glimpse of true love (farfalle carbonara, you will forever hold a place in my heart). So, here’s to the holidays, family, food, and friends. I wish the happiest holiday moments for you and your family, and hope you will find a memory that is dear to your heart as farfalle carbonara is to mine. Cheers, I will leave you with what I think is one of the best innovative designs I’ve seen in awhile!

In  a press release, Avanti Mining (TSX-V: AVT) announced that Wardrop has issued its final NI 43-101 Pre-feasibility Study Report for the Company’s Kitsault Molybdenum property, as previously announced on November 16, 2009. The complete report has been filed on SEDAR and is also available on Avanti’s web site, www.avantimining.com.

As previously reported, highlights from the study include:

• The mine plan calls for a total of 215.3 million tonnes of proven and probable reserves grading 0.085% molybdenum to be mined over a 15-year mine life, producing 368 million pounds of molybdenum.  The first five years of production averages 0.10% Mo;
• Initial capital costs are estimated at $641 million;
• Cash operating costs are estimated to be $4.43/lb of accountable molybdenum (recovered molybdenum less 1% deductions);
• The average life of mine (LOM) price of molybdenum for base case scenario is computed by using the CPM Group projections and it is $15.88/lb.;
• The base case after-tax NPV(8%) is $551 million, with an IRR of 20.6%;
• Projected undiscounted net cash flow (after-tax) is $1.56 billion;
• Annual metal production for the mine life averages 24.5 million pounds of molybdenum with the first five years averaging 29.2 million pounds per year;
• The mine has certain infrastructure in place with road and ocean freight access to the mine site and will be serviced by the BC Hydro transmission grid;
• Develop a Run-of-River Hydro-electric project, by taking advantage of the site water diversion design in managing runoff from the average 2 meters of precipitation;
• The Hydroelectric project may represent a long lived project asset with implications for project reclamation financing;
• The reopening of the mine is projected to create over 330 jobs in addition to 250 construction jobs over that 3 year period; and
• The mines existing M-10 permit can be amended under the BC Mines Act process or a voluntary BC Environmental Assessment Act “opt-in” process.

How do they compare in performance?

The Starship is a bit bigger overall but still, it has a proportionally stupendous wing area and suffers high weight and high drag as a consequence, being slower despite more power. The three surface configuration of Avanti could also help to minimize trim drag in cruise.

The cabin space looks to actually be not that far off, since Avanti’s nose is shorter. The Avanti has thin straight laminar flow wings that give very little drag. Has someone been into both cabins who can comment on the internal room?

Landing speed is surprisingly similar, 150+-3 km/h for both. Even if Starship has half the wing loading. On the other hand, it probably can’t fly at a high angle of attack or use large high lift devices because the “stalling canard” control arrangement. The rear end of the large chord wing is so far behind that the nose down moment from bigger flaps could simply stall the canard.

Could these be the reasons why the Starship never became a commercial success, with only 53 having been operated commercially? A big aircraft compared to its capability? Avanti on the other hand at least has made and is making some sales, over 150 have been made. I’ve heard stories about how Scaled composites didn’t know how to make commercially operational craft back then, and maintenance folk actually had to cut holes in the skin to do some work. The french site claims Starship used over five times the research development budget, and the craft looks like an enlarged EZ, so nothing that novel aerodynamically. What went wrong? Is it the composites, a bridge too far?

I find comparisons interesting. They put matters into better context than just examining features of things alone. I feel it is done far too rarely – when reading about technical histories, they follow one project at a time and the reader can’t form a comprehensive picture of things or give meaning to the years and numbers thrown around. I was actually working on a free print-it-yourself trump card game with rocket engines some years back, to help familiarize oneself with their features, I still think I have the publisher files stashed somewhere. (Too bad it still is impossible to find even a semi decent page layout program for free.)

In a press release this morning, Avanti Mining Inc. (TSX-V: AVT) announced the appointment of Kenneth W. Collison, as Senior Vice President – Project Development.

Mr. Collison has over 30 years of experience in the mining industry, most recently as Chief Operating Officer of Thompson Creek Metals which included the responsibility for the operations of the Endako and Thompson Creek molybdenum mines as well as the Feasibility study for the Davidson project. He was part of the management group that purchased Thompson Creek in 2006. From 2001 to 2004 Mr. Collison worked for the State of Alaska managing construction of sewer and water systems for rural Alaska with extensive dealings with rural populations including first nation communities. In addition, he has held various high ranking positions with Coeur d’Alene Mines and Rio Algom Limited. Mr. Collison has served as a director of the Mining Associations of Canada and BC as well as president and director of the Nova Scotia Chamber of Mineral Resources. His community service earned him the “Citizen of the Year” award from the Yarmouth, NS Chamber of Commerce.

I love this car. It was introduced the same year as the Jaguar XKE and I still think its a great looking car, way ahead of its time. This shot was taken in July of 2003 and it looks very “Cool” even in 2009.

The Studebaker Avanti was a sports coupe built by the Studebaker Corporation of South Bend, Indiana, USA between June 1962 and December 1963. Designed by a team of stylists employed by industrial designer Raymond Loewy, the Avanti featured a radical fiberglass body design mounted on a modified Studebaker Lark convertible chassis. After the closure of Studebaker’s factory in December 1963, The Avanti model name, tooling and plant space were sold to two South Bend Studebaker dealers. They introduced a slightly modified version of the car in 1965 under the brand name “Avanti II”, but neither it nor subsequent models assembled by a succession of entrepreneurs had any lawful connection with the Studebaker Corporation or its brand name.

In a press release this morning, Avanti Mining Inc. (TSX-V: AVT) announced the engagement of WestLB AG to act as its exclusive financial advisor in connection with arranging project finance for the development of the Kitsault molybdenum mine in British Columbia.  The engagement is effective January 1, 2010 to enable WestLB to work with Avanti during the same time as Avanti’s Prefeasibility Study announced on November 16, 2009 is refined into a Final Feasibility study.

According to A.J. Ali, Chief Financial Officer of Avanti, ”We are pleased that a resource bank of WestLB’s caliber will be assisting us to “fast track” the financing of the project concurrent with Avanti’s marketing and technical study activities.  We expect this approach to save a minimum of six months in the aggressive development schedule for Kitsault.”

It was just one week ago (this very moment!) that I was driving home from the airport, fresh (or fatigued, depending on your outlook) from my first visit to the beautiful, exasperating, exciting, strange and wonderful county of Italia, a whirlwind week of food, art, history, and friendship.  As if the jet lag wasn’t enough, we made sure we wore ourselves out, drinking in (literally and figuratively…I still don’t know how I functioned each morning after the wonderful bottle or so of wine I polished off every dinner) everything we could in the short time we had.  Our motto: Do it now, process it later.

I live in Southern Ontario, not exactly Hollywood North (although a fair bit of filmmaking does take place in Toronto and isolated areas) so when I see my environs captured on celluloid, it’s usually Anyplace, U.S.A. over top of places familiar to me with all the requisite flag and sign changes.  I can still however, scream and point as I see these poorly disguised landmarks in movies like Short Circuit, To Die For and Dawn Of the Dead (shot in the mall I used to work at and okay, I simply screamed in pain at Short Circuit).  But here was a country so steeped in history, so utterly familiar to those who have never been there that the very names conjure up vivid images, Trevi Fountain, St. Peter’s Basilica, Pompeii, the Colosseum, mozzarella, pizza, Michelangelo.  And so I found in my travels that so much of what I was seeing in person revived memories of movies both recent and long forgotten.  It seemed as though each sight, taste or smell elicited a film flashback  and so I will give a day-by-day reminisce, mingled with the movies brought to mind.

Day One: Rome (the airport at least)-Flying into Leonardo Da Vinci International Airport in Fiumicino, a suburb of Rome, I was reminded of the opening scenes of Avanti!, the Billy Wilder-directed Jack Lemmon comedy about an American businessman wrested from his golf-and-martini life to fly to Italy to facilitate the shipping of his father’s body back Stateside, even as he is engulfed by ‘amore’.  The opening scenes are the pilot’s view of the approach to Da Vinci Airport and I looked out the small window over the wing (why does it seem I’m always over the wing?) at the vast sprawl of suburban Rome, feeling somewhat more excited about the prospect than Jack Lemmon did.  As I climbed into my tiny Fiat Grande Punto and raced down the Autostrade on the 3 1/2 hour journey to our hotel, I felt at times like Matt Damon racing through the countryside in The Italian Job or one of the Bourne movies, until my wife told me to slow down or the GPS bleated its insistence that I was in fact speeding.  We arrived at our hotel, jet-lagged and apprehensive about this strange new country.

Day Two: Paestum-A mere four kilometres from our hotel (although the guide book said one kilometre so we decided to ditch the car and get a taste of the countryside…boy, did we ever) is the ancient Greek town of Poseidonia, which the Romans later named Paestum, where lay what most historians consider the best-preserved Greek ruins in the world.  Beyond the quiet humility I felt as I thought about my relative insignificance in the long dance of history that played out on this plain, I also felt awed as I envisioned a 40-foot-high Laurence Olivier sitting in the enormous temple of Zeus in the Ray Harryhausen ‘classic’, Clash Of the Titans.  But what I was most reminded of, sadly, was the movie that played on the plane the day before, the latest Nia Vardalos fiasco, My Life In Ruins.  The (unfunny) story of a Greek tour guide finding romance with the hunk bus driver while showcasing the beauty of Greece, I was saddened for a fleeting second by the thought of the wasted potential of Vardalos, who wrote and starred in the wonderful My Big Fat Greek Wedding then squandered that with Connie and Carla and this latest dreck.  Fortunately, the glory of my surroundings woke me from this sad reverie.  After our sojourn at the ruins, we stopped for our first lunch in a small bar/gelateria (a bar in Italy is the North American equivalent to a coffee shop) and it was here that one of the real differences between Europe and North America becomes most evident, the food.  In North America, we have a philosophy that more and bigger is better.  Grocery stores have become supercentres with several dozen varieties of, well, everything.  Buffets are ubiquitous, obesity is on the rise and processed is the word of the day.  In Europe, however, they still seem to take pride in their food, both growing and making it.  Everywhere we went, from the wonderful hotel restaurant to the Autogrill, Italy’s expressway rest stop, the food was terrific and made with care from fresh ingredients.  Virtually every local pizzeria featured what I would term ‘artisan’ food.  Which leads me to…

Day Three: Rome-We rose at 4:30 for the 3 1/2 hour drive back to Rome.  I know, “Why are you driving all the way back to Rome?”, you ask.  Well, you see, we had tickets for a papal audience at the Vatican at 10:30 and I had never driven in Rome proper so I wanted to get there in plenty of time, for that as well as REAL reason for the trip back, a 12:45 appointment at the top of the Spanish Steps to have our wedding vows renewed (yes, I’m such a romantic)!  Well, we made great time (again, Italian Job) and it seemed, as we approached the outskirts of Rome and the GPS informed us that we had a half hour to drive just 13 kilometres to reach our exact destination, that we were on the cusp of possibly the greatest day of our lives and everything was falling into place.  Then we hit the famed Rome traffic jam, five packed lanes as far as the eye could see!

(In the spirit of my beloved serials)…What dastardly deed had the populace of Rome foisted on our hapless hero and his blushing bride-to-be (sort of)?  Would they make it to their appointment with destiny?  Are their upcoming nuptials in jeopardy?  Would the marriage be consummated (okay, ewww..)?  Find out in the next spellbinding chapter of From Italy With Love or My Week In Italy Through Film at this theatre next week (or whenever I get the rest done)!

他人を信用せず友人もいなかったが、かなりの女たらしだったムッソリーニに捨てられたにも関わらず、いつまでも彼が自分の元に帰ってくると信じ、息子にも会えず精神病院で人生を終えるイーダの姿が余りにも悲しい。ファシズムと深い関わりがあった未来派のスタイルを彷彿させる、当時の白黒の映像を要所要所に交えた映像は、幻想的でドラマチックに仕上がっている。なかなか良い映画だったが、問題があるとすれば、若かりし頃のムッソリーニ役のフィリッポ・ティーミが男前過ぎて、アーカイブの映像にある現実のムッソリーニと結びつかないこと。そして128分と言う上映時間が不必要に長かったことかな（特に二人のセックスシーンが長かった！）。

This is another movie we saw at London Film Festival, an Italian–French movie “Vincere (Win).” Vincere, the only Italian movie shown at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, is about the tragic life of Ida Dalser, the “first wife” of Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, based on a book “la moglie di Mussolini (wife of Mussolini, 2005)” by an Italian journalist Marco Zeni. The story of Mussolini’s first marriage was suppressed during fascist rule, and remained generally unknown for years afterwards. Vincere stars Giovanna Mezzogiorno as Ida, Ida Dalser and Filippo Timi as young Mussolini and Ida’s son Benito Albino Mussolini.

Ida met “Duce” (nickname for Mussolini) in the northern border city Trento, when he was working as an editor of the Socialist Party newspaper Avanti! before World War I. Ida financed him to set up his own newspaper “Il Popolo d’Italia (people of Italy)” by selling everything she had including her beauty salon, and later they married.  One day she came to tell Mussolini that she was pregnant, but soon she was kicked out from his office when another woman with her daughter showed up – Rachele Guidi whom Mussolini married on 1915. Mussolini’s love for Ida soon disappeared but Ida didn’t give up – she was chasing him all over the place, and she and her son were ordered to move in with her sister and her every move had been watched by the local police. Ida still tried to win back her love to the point of extreme, and was forcefully hospitalized in a mental institution. She had never allowed to leave the  hospital until when she died at the age of 57. Her son, Benito Albino was abducted from his uncle’s house by government agents, and was adopted as an orphan by the fascist ex-police chief. He was educated at a boarding school and later enrolled in the navy, and always remained under close surveillance by the fascist government. He also insisted that Mussolini was his father, and was eventually forcibly interned in an asylum, where he died in 1942, aged 27.

Ida was dumped by Mussolini, who had no friend but tons of women, but had never given up her hope that Mussolini would come back to her one day, but finished her life at mental hospital, even  separated from her beloved son – such a heartbreaking story. The cinematography mixed with archival black & white footage and edited in Futurist style, which had strong tie with Italian fascism, is dramatic and atmospheric. I enjoyed the movie, but if I have to find a problem, it would be (1) Filippo Timi is too good-looking and I couldn’t connect him with real Mussolini in the archive films, and (2) 128 min screening time is unnecessarily too long (especially the sex scenes of Ida and Mussolini goes on and on!)  .

Ujjain is one of the oldest towns in the whole of India. This is the reason this land is known in different names over the year. Ujjain is a land of rich heritage. The main names of this holy land are, Ujjayini, Avanti, Avantikapuri etc. Ujjain is located in the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh. Ujjain was considered the first meridian longitude for Hindu geographers since 4the century BC. Ujjain is mentioned in the great epic Mahabharata, at that time the land was called Avanti Kingdom. Ujjain is one of the seven holy cities for Hindus. The famous festival Kumbh Mela is celebrated here once in 12 years. The earliest mention of Ujjain was made by Buddha in 4^th Century BC, when it was known by the name Avanti Kingdom. The place was also famous for being the residence of the great emperor Ashoka the great. In the post Mouryan period the land came under Sungas, the Satavahanas and the Ror Sakas. Finally it came under the territory of Gupta dynasty. Ujjain was the capital of Chandragupta II or Vikramaditya of Gupta dynasty. The major annals and important literatures are written in this city. By 6^th and 7^th century Ujjain reached the pinnacle of glory. It was the major center of mathematical and astronomical research.

Today the city has several ancient monuments such as, Mahakal temple, the Chintaman Ganesh temple, Siddha Ashram, The Kaliyadeh Palace, Bhrathari caves, Vedha Shala (observatory), ISKCON temple etc.

Ujjain is assessable destination for tourists. The Devi Ahlyabai Holkar airport in Indore is the nearest airport and is just 55 km away from Ujjain. Ujjain has a railway station with good rail network. The city also has plenty of hotels and resorts which will be filled with tourists and devotees for pilgrimage during the Kumbh Mela seasons.

I’ve spent the past two weeks moving my furniture up from CT and realizing, of course, that there just isn’t enough room for all of it!  I spent the next week unpacking boxes and I’m happy to say that there are only two left!

My sister Laurie, her two kids and my mother came for a visit last weekend.  We truly pushed the limits of how many people one 550 sq. ft. cottage can hold.  Everyone was great about the cramped sleeping arrangements and we had a nice time.  We drove over to Woodstock on Sunday – the drive through Killington was beautiful.  I think we hit the peak of this somewhat dull Fall foliage season.  Laurie kept insisting that she saw a moose and at one point had me backing up on a windy country road.  Unfortunately, no moose to be seen~

This week, I got to see my new doctor’s office – sooner than I had planned.  A cold that started last weekend turned into a sinus infection – luckily, I think I caught it in time and I’m feeling much better!

Other big news is that I had my first highlight and hair cut from a new hairdresser for the first time in over fifteen years!  Yes, Rutland has a cool salon.  Laurel at Avanti was great and chatted away the whole time.  It was nice to be pampered!

There have been some thoughts I have wanted to share with you, others I have not. I hope we can move past my habit of neglect to be the closest of companions once again.

My long-lost confidant, I will again open your pages and begin to open up my mind and heart within your covers. The intimate. The not so intimate. The daily. The lifely. The emotions. The wrongs. The visions. THE TRUTH.

A few weeks ago, I went to the Adams Morgan Festival and had several small life epiphanies. It was pretty much amazing!  Lots of food, art, and diversity.

Here I am at the festival. I love how big my feet look! lol. Shout-out to my favorite person and photographer in the whole entire world, Avanti. We had soo much fun

Here is the puppy bulldog I met and fell in love with! Douglas (his name), is the first man I have officially been in love with lol. We shared an intense moment, as he spotted me out of the crowd he so nonchalantly enticed. I decided I am going to get a bulldog instead of a pug when I graduate from college!

After several hours eating, meeting, viewing, and internalizing, we left the festival with possibly new outlooks on life. Who knows what events in our lives have changed our perspectives in any small way… I just love to acknowledge the possibility! Well it’s been fun catching up…expect to hear from me sooner than later.

This amazing piece of equipment will heat your food up as precisely as an oven as fast as any microwave you’ll ever own. The best part is, of course, that you won’t get rubbery bread or have to wait 20 minutes for anything to preheat. These can be mountable or counter top, with analog or digital displays. They are made by companies you’ve heard of, like Delonghi, Kitchenaid, Panasonic, Cuisinart, and Oster. Best of all, they require minimal repairs and can last a very long time when treated well.
