One of the problems I ran into when I moved to another university was the awkward way in which internet access was provided for the students. Instead of having routers in each dorm room that connected onto a high-speed fiber connection as I was accustomed to, I had to be satisfied with inconsistent WiFi. Anyway, this post is not meant to complain about unreliable internet access. On rare occasions you may find that your internet provider requires that you connect through their proxy server with a username and password in order to surf freely. This presents no problem for your web browser once the settings are configured, but what about all those other applications such as your antivirus software that require a constantly active connection in order to download and install definition updates?

Some antivirus applications have a problem calling home through proxies. This can spell trouble for you because, without the necessary virus definitions, your antivirus has no way of protecting your computer from the latest threats that may slip through questionable web surfing habits. I noticed here at my university that the proxy inconvenience seems to also coincide with the number of infected personal computers. Scary! Anyway, here is a brief walkthrough on how to configure avast! Antivirus to connect through a proxy server.

1. Make sure that settings for an active proxy server are configured through Internet Explorer.

2. Right-click on the avast! Antivirus icon in the system tray and select Program Settings from the menu.

Parlando con i clienti in negozio mi rendo conto ogni giorno di più di quanto la gente sia male informata riguardo al parco software a disposizione per ogni tipo di piattaforma, sia essa Linux, Windows o Mac OS. In particolar modo molti mi domandano se nel tal computer è già presente Office o se devono acquistarlo a parte, se c’è “il Norton” già installato e dubbi vari di designer e ingegneri riguardo al passaggio a Mac vista la mancanza di una versione di AutoCad compatibile con i computer Apple. Su quest’ultimo argomento ci terrei a precisare una cosa: è vero, Autodesk si ostina (inspiegabilmente e paradossalmente) a non produrre una versione di Cad nativa per Mac OS, rendendo di fatto necessaria l’installazione tramite Boot Camp, Parallels o VMWare Fusion di una copia di Windows. Proprio da questo problema partirò per spiegare meglio il titolo del post: non esiste solo AutoCad. Come non esiste solo Office e neanche soltanto Norton. Ci sono invece moltissime alternative ai programmi più noti, magari meno pubblicizzati ma aventi le stesse funzioni e potenzialità. Riguardo alla modellazione 3D ecco quindi VectorWorks e ArchiCad, al posto di Office si può usare OpenOffice (per tutti i sistemi operativi e pure gratis), e per l’antivirus ci sono pure AVG, Avast! e Kaspersky. Ovviamente tutti sono liberissimi di scegliersi il software che vogliono, ma troppo spesso ho visto persone preferire un computer ad un altro (migliore) perchè spaventati dal dover “per forza” spendere quasi 200 euro per le licenze che nessun produttore di pc regala mai. Quindi spendo meno per il computer e con quello che rimane mi compro Office. Quando faccio notare che esistono (valide) alternative, molti non vogliono neanche provare ad usare qualcosa di diverso, perchè ormai Word lo conoscono e il Norton “è pesante però è il migliore”. Non inizierò una discussione su cosa è meglio e cosa è peggio, non è questo il tema. Ma se tutti provassimo ad aprire gli occhi senza aver timore del “mondo dei software nascosti” e meno conosciuti, senza dubbio staremmo, almeno dal punto di vista della produttività, molto ma molto meglio.

So far it has worked well for me.  For those of you who wants to use this program, do take note that every time it updates its database, it will pop out an advertisement screen.  Just click close.

As for what’s my alternative, you may want to try out Avast! or AVG.  I have use both of them in the past and they worked fine too.

Why these 3 antivirus programs?  Because they are as good as the commercial one and the most important thing is they are FREE.

Don’t opt for Windows 7 Ultimate just because you like the sound of ‘Ultimate.’

Windows 7 Ultimate is intentionally misnamed by Microsoft to ultimately trap all of those that feel that they must have the BEST. There is nothing wrong with always wanting the BEST. But, in the case of Windows 7 Ultimate is unlikely to be the BEST option for YOU … unless you are bona fide road-warrior.

Do not rely on ANY OTHER chart. Whatever you do don’t listen to ‘YOUR PC GUY’ (and why do we have such a shortage of PC Gals?) who tells you that you should go with the ULTIMATE … since it only costs $20 more than ‘Professional.’

Check MSFT’s CHART. Note you only get two, and only two, features in ‘Ultimate’ above what you get with ‘Professional.’

Those two are:

1. BitLocker. That is on-the-fly data encryption. MSFT sells it as feature against hackers. Don’t buy that. That is disingenuous of MSFT, to say the least. We have Windows Defender that is supposed to protect us from Hackers? So, why do you also need BitLocker. Yes, BitLocker is invaluable if you have a laptop and are a road warrior. If the laptop is stolen or lost, you data will be safe. For that you need BitLocker. In my book, and I have written a few, that is the ONLY reason to have BitLocker. To protect data on ‘traveling’ laptops. Don’t ever think of BitLocker on a desktop. Just use Windows Defender and Avast.
   
2. 35 Language Support. That is very nice, but do YOU really need that on YOUR PC. Like how many languages do you use on you PC? Just good and bad English. That is two.
   

The irony is that I think BitLocker can actually have a performance impact on your PC. Don’t know that for a fact. Just a guess. I do know some about encryption, but I haven’t bothered to look up the details of BitLocker.

My goal is to just to give YOU a HEADS UP that Windows 7 Ultimate is not the Ultimate Windows 7 experience that you may have been hoping for. So don’t spend the extra without checking out what you are not getting to get.

Yes, I know that Windows 7 Ultimate is freely available, in pirated form. If you are going to use pirated software then this really will the ultimate kick for you. Go for it. The worst it can do is slow you PC down, but what the heck. You got THE ULTIMATE for nothing.

Once it installs, just right click and choose the first option to install AVAST.

Once the install finishes, you will find the AVAST link in Applications-> Accessories

When you first launch it, it will ask you to register to receive a key in your email. Fill out the registration and past the key from the email that will arrive.

First do an UPDATE to get the latest virus signatures. Then do a full scan.

My technique is to install something new FIRST on my machine which runs a Wubi install of Ubuntu on windows, because if anything goes wrong, it takes me much less time to reinstall that than to reinstall my pure Ubuntu 280 gig Gateway.

I posted several times at Avira forum, which is always very helpful, asking for Ubuntu install instructions. Finally someone gave me a link to a PDF about Avira Linux installs which seemed to require a kernal rebuild, which is way beyond my abilities. If only they had given me the above link, I could have installed it with a couple of clicks. I kind of gave up on the idea of having Avira.

The way I discovered this useful link is that I wanted to have an IRC client to seek advice from other Ubuntu users, so I went to synaptic manager and … well, first I installed ircii, but I saw no way to launch it, so then I installed Konversation, which has a gui interface and launch icon and places me right into an Ubuntu chat. I mentioned there about my interest in Avast for Linux-Ubuntu and someone gave me the above link that I need.

I went to the synaptic manager and found the CLAM antivirus scanner, and installed that.

I am sure my Wubi Ubuntu machine will be running that THOROUGH scan of the ENTIRE system for quite some time. But I want to try it out to the maximum before I put it on my Gateway.

I just now took a peek at the screen and it is paused because IT HAS FOUND A VIRUS, which it recommends moving to the CHEST for Quarantine,

which means it is scanning the windows portion of the hard drive, so I think I will ignore it, since that Windows portion gets scanned each day by Avira and also by MalwareBytes.

It is most curious that the file is flagged by the Linux version and not by the Windows version, so I will post this at the Avira forum and call it to their attention. I do believe that pagefile.sys is part of the Windows system and is always locked during scans!.

I never stopped to think that a COMPLETE system scan would include all the files in HOST, which is the Windows partition.

@fitozg. Soy usuario de Avast, ahora en su versión 4.8 y pendiente de salir la 5, desde hace unos cuantos años y siempre me ha funcionado más que correctamente. Pero en estos últimos meses salió a la luz el nuevo antivirus gratuito de la gente de Redmond, el Microsoft Security Essentials, y como en muchísimos blogs y webs de información han hablado tan bien de él me decidí a probarlo.

Así que desinstalé mi Avast e instalé el MSE. Las primeras impresiones son muy buenas, con una interfaz muy sencilla, quizá demasiado por que en ocasiones parece que le falten opciones y  se vea algo “pobre”, que ofrece los mismos servicios que otros antivirus gratuitos.

Al preparar un escaneo completo de mi disco duro me sorprendió que no fuera como en Avast que ofrece un escaneo completo que te hace reiniciar el PC y se dedica en exclusiva a investigar en nuestros archivos; el MSE ejecuta el escaneo mientras tu puedes seguir utilizando, aunque con algún problema de rendimiento, tu winndows. Tengo que decir que prefiero el método de Avast puesto que prefiero que tarde menos sin usar el SO a lo que me tardó el MSE, casi 8 horas frente a las 4, más o menos, de Avast.

Virus no encontró ninguno, lo que confirmó los análisis del antivirus de Alwil.

Entonces, ¿en qué basarse para elegir antivirus? En mi caso en el hecho de que, pese a que en un principio el MSE casi ni se notaba en el rendimiento del PC, al cabo de dos semanas cuando quería abrir  un menú contextual, o una carpeta, incluso cuando trabajaba con varias pestañas en el navegador web, el antivirus sí se notaba, y mucho, tanto que decidí volver a Avast, porque aunque hay usuarios que se quejan de su consumo de recursos para mi es muchísimo menor que el de Microsoft y no cambia con el paso del tiempo.

En definitiva, MSE es un buen antivirus gratuito pero le falta mejorar en algunas cosas y para mí la más importante es el hecho de cómo se comporta al cabo de tenerlo instalado en el PC un par de semanas. Por ahora nada mejor que Avast, el cual por cierto está esperando la salida de su nueva versión 5.0 que promete mejorar la ya de por si grande calidad de funcionamiento.
