Holidays and Holy Days on November 29:

First Sunday of Advent – Christian time of preparation for observing the birth of Jesus Christ and is the beginning of the Christian worship year. Advent is observed with the lighting of advent candles, display of wreaths, and special ceremonies. The season continues through December 24.

_________________________________________

As I ride the bike this morning I am visited by contrasting emotions. One is positive and tied to memories of my youth, the second is somewhat unsettling and associated with the pilgrimage site we are visiting today.

Advent Wreath

Today is the first Sunday of advent and will be accompanied by the lighting of the first of four candles on the Advent Wreath. The memories of the advent wreath in the Catholic churches of my youth bring a smile to my face! It always fueled my anticipation for the arrival of Christmas. I remember the excitement I felt as each week past, moving us closer to the white candle in the center of the wreath signifying Christmas day. I wish I could report that I cherished the immense spiritual significance of the day, but like many, perhaps most children, it was the promise of Santa’s bountiful gifts that I anticipated. One of the features of spiritual rituals and symbols is that they can become strong emotional cues which may or may not have direct

bearing on the doctrine based teaching supporting the activity. Free enterprise and mass marketing provide us with a plentiful selection of gifts. However, as a result of commercialism,Santa overshadows the “Christ child” at Christmas, and a Bunny carrying a basket of eggs and candies can overshadow the “risen savior” at Easter. While Santa no longer receives my wish list, the fond memories of simple, joyful times, of family and community still visit me at this special season.

Our Pilgrimage Site visit today, the ninth in our continuing series, is to a somewhat controversial site about 30 miles east of Naples Florida. The site of Ave Maria Catholic University and the surrounding community. I struggled a bit with whether to include this location as a pilgrimage site. It is not my

intention to blog on controversial or divisive topics. However, I don’t believe that one can be open to the diversity of religious and spiritual beliefs without recognizing the presence of differing opinions. In the end, I decided to include it because of the artistic efforts underway at the site. Part of what is controversial about the site is the combining of a conservative religion with a university and a surrounding community, a community that is being constructed as an integral part of the church and university’s development. The town center is dominated by the Ave Maria Oratory, reminiscent of a medieval European village with a cathedral dominating the center of town. Some people may see the community as one large religious entity. They raise questions about who (business and/or individuals) is welcome to move into the community and whether voicing concerns about the community is the same as voicing concerns about the religion. Some have argued that this community is a shining example of freedom of religion and our right to congregate based upon principles of our choosing. Others see it as a continuing trend toward a nation of gated communities, of “haves and have not’s,” of bastions of orthodoxy in opposition to contemporary morals and change. I suspect both points share some truth. Let each reader decide!

The day after Thanksgiving is informally known in the US as Black Friday. This is the day when many families buy Christmas presents. The highways and byways are generally clogged with traffic. Yet, with the economy the way it is, who knows how this year’s shopping trips will go? If nothing else, there are sure to be some unseasonal bargains available.

If you’re staying close to home and want something new to look at on the Net, why not check out what’s been happening in Ave Maria, Florida? If you’re unfamiliar with the name, this is the town that Domino’s Pizza founder Tom Monaghan brought to life in the spring of 2007. He originally intended it to be a town for orthodox Catholics who wanted the freedom to attend Tridentine Mass and send their children to traditional Catholic schools, from kindergarten through university. With everyone sharing the same values and devotions, it sounded like a dream come true. Although I am naturally suspicious of any private-enterprise town, e.g. Celebration, the Disney town, I thought that maybe the Holy Spirit would work through Monaghan to make this an exemplary community.

I first read about Ave Maria in August 2008 in NaplesNews.com, which featured a report on the Dominican Sisters of Mary which established a teaching mission in town. They wear the same habits that the order of Dominicans I had in high school wore. And, just like in my day, they sound ideal for serious Catholics:

Assumpta, the Dominican’s founder, used to be a member of the Nashville-based Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia, another popular orthodox order for young women. She started the new order in 1997, and quickly met up with Ave Maria founder Tom Monaghan, who has supported the group in many ways, including financially…

For Dan Guernsey, headmaster at Ave Maria’s grammar school, the Dominican Sisters teaching at his school was a Godsend. The nuns embodied an alternative, Guernsey says, to the objectification of women in popular culture. They showed that a rejection of that culture and an embracing of a holy life was not only possible, but, more important, is the path to happiness.

‘They are the curriculum,’ he says.

My hopes for success were further boosted last May when I read that Dr Thomas Hilgers, who gave the Commencement address at Ave Maria University, came down hard on Fr John I Jenkins, Notre Dame’s president, for giving a pro-abortion President an honorary Doctorate of Law degree.

Now, on Les Femmes I see that all is not so heavenly in the town borrowing the Angel Gabriel’s greeting to Our Lady. On November 15, 2009 Mary Ann Kreitzer covered the news that Ave Maria resident and journalist, Marielena Montesino de Stuart, is forbidden from setting foot in much of the town, which, let’s remember, is private property! This is why I object to this type of community. This journalist has investigated the darker side of Ave Maria for the Catholic newspaper, The Wanderer. Mary Ann says:

With Mrs. de Stuart, the iron fist is up close and personal. The university has banned her from its property. But much of Ave Maria town belongs to the university so the de Stuart family who live there are forbidden from their own neighborhood. FOX news covered the story which described how her children are now afraid to leave the house. Makes one thrilled at the thought of living in that town, doesn’t it?.

That this type of action could take place at a campus founded specifically to advance orthodox Catholicism is shocking, but it’s become typical of how Ave Maria operates. Fr. Fessio was fired (the second time) because he PRIVATELY took concerns about the financial stability of the university to the head of the board of directors. Obviously the stability of Ave Maria town is directly related to the health of the university, so Mrs. de Stuart’s concern is well founded.

Mary Ann adds:

My husband and I welcomed Ave Maria with outstretched arms. We signed up for the Founders’ Club and began giving a monthly donation. When things started to come apart early on we reluctantly withdrew …

Pray for all who have been hurt during the building of this so-called Catholic University and town and pray especially for Tom Monaghan. A man with money who can call the shots that impact people’s lives had better be sure he’s doing God’s will.

Ave Maria University has undergone administration changes to both its undergraduate and law schools like a revolving door. There’s too much to detail here. But, you can click the links below to follow the story:

Ave Maria Law in Toilet — Tier Rankings, Again. How?

Dean is Paid by School Board but has a Private Salary Contract with Monaghan and His Foundation

Ave Maria – The Promise, The Reality (Part 2)

Then, there is Ms de Stuart’s personal story, which she tells here in Ave Maria – The Promise, The Reality (Part 1). This woman cannot even attend Mass because, although she is allowed to enter the church, she cannot set foot on the property around it. She wrote this account in August 2009, three months before that happened, though. Here’s a taster:

Ave Maria is my second ‘promised land’. When my family and I freed ourselves from the grip of the Communists in Cuba and arrived in the promised land of the United States, we left behind years of persecution, political imprisonment, executions, and hunger. But most of all we left behind the inhuman practice of silencing dissent— silencing our ability to speak the truth of the injustices we suffered. Free speech, and the ability to express dissent is what separates civilized societies from uncivilized ones. It is what my father was imprisoned for — and many members of my family gave up their lives for, as devout Roman Catholics. So, it is in this spirit of freedom, truth, and loyalty to the Church, that I tell the following story…

Anyone who visited Ave Maria in the spring of 2007 could have easily compared it to the surface of another planet. The remoteness, and the absence of topographical prominence, other than the church and a few buildings, made it seem almost surreal. A place so barren could only be supported through the lure of big promises…

Within the first year, the disappointments and the exodus began. The moral conditions needed to support a project of the magnitude of Ave Maria were not there — not because there weren’t participants and residents supporting the moral conditions needed — but because many of the key players had gone in another direction…

Some of the faithful Catholic families that purchased homes in Ave Maria, with great joy, sacrifice, and enthusiasm, have subsequently sold them at a great loss. Some seem to be ’walking away’ from their property. Others came, hoping to buy — then saw the disconnect between the promise and the reality, then withdrew their offers on the purchase of homes. The remarks from those who have left or are trying to leave include, ‘it wasn’t what we thought it would be’ to ‘we want to put it behind us’ or ‘we cannot discuss it’. The Naples Daily News reporter could hardly ever obtain an attributable statement about problems concerning the university and the town from a resident in nearly a year and a half, since the town opened.

It also turns out that Tom Golisano, a divorced billionaire who supports pro-choice candidates, will have an Ave Maria University building named after him. Find out more here.

You can keep up with the story at AveWatch.com in the blogroll.

Let’s hope that the good sisters are keeping Mr Monaghan, Ms de Stuart and Ave Maria’s other residents in their prayers. There’s a message here. I’m just not sure what it is at the moment.

The Ave Maria was composed in about 1825 by Franz Schubert (1797-1828) when he was twenty-eight years old and filled with devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was written for voice and piano and first Published in 1826 as Op 52 no 6. The words most commonly used with Schubert’s music are not the words that the composer originally set to music. Franz Schubert actually wrote the music for an excerpt from the poem “The Lady of the Lake” by Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832), which was translated into German by Adam Storck. Schubert called his piece Ellens dritter Gesang (Ellen’s third song). In this particular excerpt from the poem the heroine, Ellen Douglas, is in hiding and prays to the Virgin Mary. A letter from Schubert to his father and step-mother refers to his music to Ave Maria:

“My new songs from Scott’s Lady of the Lake especially had much success. They also wondered greatly at my piety, which I expressed in a hymn to the Holy Virgin and which, it appears, grips every soul and turns it to devotion.”

The original words by Sir Walter Scott are detailed below and include many references to the Latin “Ave Maria” prayer. This, no doubt, inspired an unknown person to fit the Latin “Ave Maria” prayer text to Schubert’s notes, and it almost succeeds with a couple of exceptions. The adapted Latin words of Ave Maria prayer ( Hail Mary ) is now the version most commonly performed with the music of Schubert

Sci-fi is all the rage these days. Made a sneaky comeback (or not) with Star Trek: NextGen and grew

Sci-fi is all the rage these days. Made a sneaky comeback (or not) with Star Trek: NextGen and grew in popularity during the 90s until today. However, it is, by enlarge, on the soft side of the scale (downright mushy if you ask me). In the beginning (somewhere in the middle of of the 19th century) science fiction was truly speculative fiction. New scientific discoveries accelerated the pace of technological advancement. They in turn opened up a universe of possibilities for adventure in far away places, like Venus, Mars, or the moons of Saturn. When man managed to reach earth orbit, hard science fiction became popular and distinct from the softer fluff of pulp fiction, which came to be known as space opera (as in soap opera).

The authors like Arthur C. Clarke took a hard look at the science in front of them and extrapolated entire universes bound by the laws of physics. Overtime the science became a straight jacket to story telling and confined sci-fi to a sub-class of hardcore fans. Meanwhile franchises like Start Trek and Star Wars (who turned the concept of space opera upside down) went the other way and opened up the genre to millions of fans worldwide. Yet even after they encouraged a new generation of scientist and technologist to go farther in their fields, they still scratched their heads, “But that doesn’t work that way!“

Hollywood sci-fi has gotten so fluffy that all it takes to call something sci-fi is for the producers to declare, “X IN SPACE” or “Y IN THE FUTURE“. Now not all shows or movies trend that way (recent SW and ST movies not withstanding). A few examples show that you can have a enough science to spice up your narrative without being strap down to a table for a extended session of electroshock therapy at the hands of astrophysicist screaming “THAT IS NOT POSSIBLE!”

Examples include: Firefly (no sound in space, not FTL), BSG/B5 (Newtonian Physics which makes for some cool space dogfights) and a few others (feel free to insert your own examples). By adding a few bits of real science you can break the mold and make your show cool again. Doesn’t mean you have to jettison all the softer parts (artificial gravity, FTL, space dogfights), especially if you need them to make the story work for you. Just be careful that you keep it consistent and don’t abuse the applied phlebotinum.

In other words, you can still use science to wow your audience without pretending you care for the actual science.

By way of example, look at this short video. If that is not a gorgeous sight perfect for any sci-fi (or even fantasy) story, I don’t know what is:

Credit: The über-talented jenleighbarry.

When the official announcement was made that David Archuleta would release a Christmas album this fall, many people — including fans — were surprised.

“It’s too early in his career,” warned some. “It’s a cash grab,” snarked others.

Most fans, however — including me — seemed thrilled at the prospect of a CD pairing David’s glorious voice with traditional Christmas songs. For us, it was a no-brainer — after all, David’s often mentioned how much he loves singing those songs. He even included a number of them as encores at last December’s Jingle Ball shows.

What did take me by surprise, though, was David’s recent response to a CNN reporter, explaining the timing of Christmas From the Heart:

“I feel like you have to take advantage of the opportunities that you are given at the time,” said David.” “I don’t know how long I will be in the position with music that I am. … I just felt like while people are enjoying what I am doing and recognizing the work I am doing, it probably is a good time to do it.”

So even after all the accolades, the hit CD, the sold-out solo tour, and the Teen Choice and ALMA Awards, he’s still taking nothing, NOTHING for granted. It could all disappear tomorrow, he reminds himself, so make the most of today.

Make the most of today. This message hit especially close to home for me this week after some personal sadness led me to reflect on the blessings in my life – not the least of which is discovering David’s music.

Not that David’s Voice blinds me to the pain and suffering in the world – in fact, sometimes it intensifies my awareness of that pain — but as I continue to listen, I feel drawn into a wellspring of love and light that is often overpowering.

While listening to certain songs – Save the Day, Think of Me, Angels – I often have to hit pause so I can catch my breath as the convulsive sobs subside.

Maybe not the effect most pop stars are going for but then again, David Archuleta is not most pop stars.

Photo: jmahrer

Like all true artists, even his most “frivolous” efforts engage your full attention – never mere background, you are a participant … an active listener. Nowhere is this more evident than on CFTH. These are not carols to tinkle blithely off in the distance as you shop for stocking stuffers.

For What Child Is This, I need to sit and close my eyes as I become transported into the story. Riu Riu Chiu and Pat-a-Pan compel me to move and/or sing along – and Ave Maria … oh my … it requires my full and complete attention, not to mention a crate of tissues.

The prospect of David singing these songs live in 12 short days also fills me with gratitude. I don’t know why I’ve been given such a wondrous gift but I vow to treasure and share the sheer joy it brings as best I can.

In that same CNN interview, David was asked what sets CFTH apart from the multitudes of Christmas CDs already out there. This was his answer:

“I tried to give the music a reverence. We could have gone more radio friendly because I am in the more pop vein of music, but I wanted to make sure when people listened to it I got them thinking about what the songs were talking about. Whether it was through the vocals or the arrangement, I wanted people to connect with the songs emotionally.”

I think I’ll go make the most of today and listen again….

P.S. Wow, on this 1st anniversary of the debut CD release, check out this first vlog … where David thanks the fans (and mentions Canada at 2:45 ) …

Monday – November 9, 2009 OPEN LETTER to the Ave Maria University Board of Trustees My name is

Monday – November 9, 2009

OPEN LETTER to the Ave Maria University Board of Trustees

My name is Marielena Montesino de Stuart. I am a writer for The Wanderer– America’s oldest Roman Catholic newspaper. The Wanderer is presented every week to Pope Benedict XVI, members of the Roman Curia, as well as Bishops on both sides of the Atlantic. No one disputes The Wanderer’s history of defending Holy Mother Church. I also write for The Roman Catholic World (my blog).

My husband and I own a home in the Town of Ave Maria, where we have resided with our young children, since 2007. This is our permanent and only residence.

On Thursday, November 5, 2009 I received a telephone call from Branden E. Blackmur informing me that the Ave Maria University administration ordered that I be banned from the Golisano Press Conference, shortly before it was to begin, thereby cancelling an invitation that he had extended to me the day before at 3:49pm. Mr. Blackmur works for Falls Communications, and is in charge of extending invitations for Press Conferences at AMU.

In addition, the university administration ordered that I be banned, until further notice, from the university campus– which they specified is private property.

The accusation for the basis of this outrageous and unjust measure is that I am “disruptive” at meetings– according to Branden E. Blackmur’s statements to me over the telephone. I responded that I have never been “disruptive” at any meeting, and that there is no reason why my invitation to the Press Conference should be withdrawn. I asked for further clarification, and Mr. Blackmur would only say that this was the order issued by the Ave Maria University’s administration. I told him that I would go to the Student Union building in hopes of obtaining further personal clarification concerning this ambiguous accusation. Mr. Blackmur said nothing further.

My husband drove me to the north side of the Student Union building, with our children. As I walked towards the building, I could see T.R. Minick, Head of Security, two Sheriff Deputies, and two security guards approaching me—plus a Sheriff patrol car waiting nearby. (See photo below).

I was stunned by the presence of so much law enforcement waiting for me. I had never experienced anything like this, except in Communist Cuba. When my husband and children realized what was happening they began to quickly follow behind me.

This show of force, this deplorable act, had been ordered by the Ave Maria University administration—the same administration that claims to uphold the highest moral and Catholic principles.

Who in their right mind would buy a home here?—where a law-abiding resident is treated as one living in a despotic state.

I asked Mr. Minick if this extreme and outrageous measure could be because inside that Student Union building a billionaire by the name of Blase “Tom” Golisano, well-known for his pro-abortion stance, was about to be honored by the Ave Maria University administration for having given a large donation? Mr. Minick would not answer.

It is worthy of note that I have never attended a university meeting, nor have I ever been disruptive on university property, nor elsewhere.

The only meetings I have attended in Ave Maria are those conducted by the Ave Maria Stewardship Community District in the Town of Ave Maria, and are for property owners. These meetings have nothing to do with Ave Maria University. The meetings are all audio recorded by the Board of the Stewardship District. These recordings are made available as a matter of public record, and are evidence that I have never been disruptive.

I attended the last Stewardship District meeting on November 3rd– two days before the Golisano Press Conference. Mr. Paul Roney, Chief Financial Officer of AMU was present, since he also serves as a member of the District board.

Most important is the fact that the university administration is overreaching into town government —by issuing orders to control town residents, based on what they deem acceptable behavior at public meetings.

The Ave Maria University administration stabbed the Town of Ave Maria in the heart, through the terrible choices it made on November 5, 2009.

A ban against me—is a ban against our family. By issuing this unfair and cruel ban, the AMU administration has expressed total disregard for the closeness of our family, which is sacred.

My husband and I find ourselves trapped inside this remote town, with two young children—and no access to the institution that promised a church (which is part of the campus) lectures, sports events, a library, chapels, a cafeteria and deli open to the public—all on university property.

On Friday, November 6, I received an e-mail message from T.R. Minick, the Security Guard that waited for me and threatened me with an arrest the day before. He issued two exceptions to the ban, giving me permission to go to church, and to the Adoration Chapel—without risking trespassing. This is unacceptable.

Ave Maria University owns so much real estate on campus and in the Town of Ave Maria, all constituting private property, that it is impossible for anyone to know where the university property begins and where it ends—which leads me to an important question:

Who exactly issued the order to ban me, and is acting as my accuser—and does the decision made by this person override the power of the Board of Trustees? Where is the evidence this person holds that I have been “disruptive at meetings”?

As of the time that I write this Open Letter, I have not received an explanation from the Ave Maria University administration concerning exactly how I have been disruptive. Who will be banned next—and for what ambiguous reason?

The decision taken by the Ave Maria University’s administration to ban me—not just from the Press Conference, but from all the private property of the Ave Maria University campus, constitutes an attack on my character; therefore, I demand that the administration immediately issue a statement, with detailed evidence explaining this accusation.

Only the legal owner of the private property can lift the ban that is in place—not a security guard; therefore, I am respectfully requesting that this Board of Trustees oversee the complete lifting of this ban, in writing and in the proper legal manner.

Finally, I would like to kindly request that a member of this Board of Trustees, who is not part of the AMU administration, respond to this Open Letter.

I remain sincerely,

É talvez hoje a melhor orquestra do mundo.
- Quase ninguém ouviu falar nela aqui no Brasil.
- Aprecie, se emocione e divulgue ‘Carmen Monarcha’.

A few months ago, bride and groom, Jill and Kevin Heinz, entertained us all with the viral video of their wedding march to Chris Brown’s “Forever”. Though this video was wildly popular (getting over 25 million hits on YouTube) a choreographed dance to a pop song isn’t for everyone’s wedding. Looking for something more traditional for your ceremony, but finding classical music to be a bit daunting? Well rest easy. Before you meet with musicians, take a look – and a listen – to my starter suggestions of classical ceremony pieces:

Prelude Music: used as guests are being seated for the ceremony, which can take up to 30 minutes

Air on the G String (Bach)
One of my personal favorites! Beautiful as a string quartet.

Chorale Prelude: Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring (Bach)
This piece can also be played on strings or a piano.

Processional Music: signals the beginning of the ceremony, including seating of the parents, bridal party, (sometimes of the grandparents), and finally the bride walking down the aisle

Trumpet Tune (Purcell)
You will feel like an actual princess walking down the aisle to this song.

Trumpet Voluntary The Prince Of Denmark March (Purcell)
The trumpets sound gorgeous and are a nice alternative to the more standard string instruments.

Cannon in D (Pachelbel)
Can also work as a processional, recessional, and postlude.

Bridal Chorus (Wagner)
You can’t go wrong with the classic Here Comes The Bride.

Interlude Music: generally a vocalist will sing these songs as the bride and groom give flowers to their parents, light a unity candle, etc.

Ave Maria (Schubert)
If you would like to add a modern spin to this classic, check out Beyonce’s version.

Recessional Music: played after bride and groom have been pronounced man and wife

Wedding March (Mendelssohn)
A timeless song for the couple to exit the ceremony as newlyweds to.

Ode To Joy (Beethoven)
The last movement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is an elegant piece.

Postlude Music: played until all guests have exited the ceremony

Water Music (Handel)
A lovely piece to end the ceremony with.

Happy (Music) Hunting!

I was watching the uncensored version of The Pastoral Symphony from Fantasia. A little FYI, that’s the part where the centaurs were hooking up. Anyway, apparently the parts that were cut involved an African child-like centaur “serving” the “white” centaurs. Because of that, there were quite a bit of comments saying that the clip was racist. But I thought to myself, these people who are saying that the clip is racist aren’t putting Fantasia into context. When Fantasia originally came out in 1940, it probably was more acceptable to show African Americans as subservient. But if Fantasia came out more recently as it, it would have caused controversy and people wouldn’t watch it. I think this a case of how points of view can change within a few decades. Anyway, all I can say is that if you’re watching or reading something that was made a while back or is set in a different time period, remember that you have to put into context.

Tom : Yes, I have tricks in my pocket, I have things up my sleeve. But I am the opposite of a stage magician. He gives you illusion that has the appearance of truth. I give you truth in the pleasant disguise of illusion

Tennessee Williams - The Glass Menagerie

CD Tracklist

Ave Maria ~Schubert~ (Ave Maria! ~

AVE MARIA ~Caccini~ another mix (AVE MARIA　～

Ave Maria ~Schubert~ (inst.)

AVE MARIA ~Caccini~ another mix (inst.)

Many families in Ave Maria, including those who bought homes in support of Tom Monaghan’s never-to-be-delivered “Catholic town” (built in partnership with developer Barron Collier) and still pending “Catholic university” are struggling to make ends meet, with foreclosures on the rise–in what an Ave Maria resident recently described to the Naples Daily News as “the middle of nowhere.”

In the meantime, Tom Monaghan enjoys sharing one of his indulgences, the Ave Maria Foundation for the Arts (AMFA) with the Naples Illustrated, September 2009 print edition, a magazine catering to the very wealthy – where one can find ads for homes, offered at bargains like $5,499,000.

Here is one of Monaghan’s quotes in the Naples Illustrated:

I hope I have enough money just to cover the expenses of the university until it can wean itself from me. And I have to make sure I keep myself in a position to keep the doors open.”
