Секрет фирмы: Ты можешь себе представить такое – у нее нет системы стабилизации ESP! Как ты думаешь, ты справишься с этой тачкой на виражах? А.. извини, забыли, что речь идет об Aveo. Значит, о виражах можно забыть.
Вердикт: Э… Ты уверен, что не хочешь купить слегка подержаную Vauxhall (Opel) Corsa?
Конкуренты: Rover 100 образца 1998 года. Или Lada Riva (“семерка” по-нашему).

Вердикт: Ты получишь много машины за свои деньги, но конкуренты лучше сделаны и более динамичны.

За: У Cruze качество салона улучшилось настолько, что владельцы предыдущих моделей Chevrolet будут приятно удивлены. Да и выглядит он симпатично. Низкая цена может сыграть свою роль.
Против : Бензиновые двигатели дохлые. Машина не очень комфортабельна и не блещет динамикой. Она не настолько практична в каждодневном использовании как хэтчбек такого же класса.
Вердикт: Ты получишь много машины за свои деньги, но всему есть своя причина. Низкая цена этой машины компенсируется соответствующим качеством езды и комфорта.

Против : У базовых моделей нет кое-какого оборудования, которое стало стандартным оснащением у конкурентов, а двигатель 1.6 слишком шумный. Материалы обивки салона несимпатичны, да и ездит машина на некоторых типах дорог не очень хорошо.
Вердикт: Автомобиль довольно неплох, как базовое средство передвижения из точки А в точку Б, особенно если ты не любишь водить. Но это практически единственная хорошая фраза, которую можно сказать о Lacetti. Лучшая модификация – 1.6 со средним уровнем оборудования.

Не обманывайся насчет: речей дилера, уверяющим тебя, что с новым двигателями Matiz может пересечь любые препятствия. На самом деле, единственное препятствие, которое он сможет переехать – это “лежачий полицейский” (бугры на дороге, для замедления скорости). Да и то с большим трудом.
Конкуренты: Ford Ka, Hyundai i10, VW Fox

За: Matiz довольно резвый и экономичный, причем, неважно, с каким из двигателей. Недорогие сервисные пакеты – отличное предложение. Цены на машину низки, особенно если ты поторгуешься немного.
Против : Салон у машины узкий и тесный, даже по стандартам класса А. Руль не настраивается вообще никак, так что удобно устроиться на водительском сидении может стать проблематичным. Автомобиль очень сильно кренится в поворотах
Вердикт: Matiz не может сравниться с Daihatsu Sirion или FIAT Panda, но как бюджетный городской автомобиль вполне подойдет. Выбирай 1.0 SE и забудь про автомат.

Novo hatch da GM deve brigar com Fiesta nos EUA (Fotos: auto.qq.com)

Se para o Brasil a aposta da GM é o novo Agile e sua futura família, para o resto do mundo a Chevrolet deposita todas as suas fichas no carro destas fotos e suas crias. Se trata do novo Aveo hatch, que deve ter nome distinto dependendo do mercado.

Os flagrantes do carro foram feitos na China, onde o carro está sendo desenvolvido com o nome Sail e deve chegar já em 2010. Nos Estados Unidos, onde deve ser vendido a partir de 2011, o GM terá a forte concorrência do Ford Fiesta que está sendo desenvolvido e será produzido no México.

A frente do carro terá a nova identidade da fabricante americana no mundo. A grade dianteira ampla e repartida em duas camadas com o logo no meio. A dianteira aliás ficou bastante parecida com a do nosso Agile.

Ainda não se sabe as dimensões do novo carro, mas elas deverão ser maiores do que o nosso hatch. A lateral do carro lembra mais a de uma minivan, com teto alto e boa área envidraçada. A traseira tem caimento reto e menos estiloso que o Agile. Um ar mais sóbrio e contido.

É na parte de dentro que o novo Aveo se distancia realmente do novo hatch da GM brasileira. O carro tem um console central amplo com saídas de ar grandes. O rádio fica posicionado numa posição elevada e mais ergonômica se comparado ao Agile. Os botões do ar-condicionado ficam logo abaixo e são redondos como em boa parte da nova linha mundial da marca.

Alguns sites e blogs afirmam que o Chevrolet Sail sedã deverá substituir o Classic no Brasil. O que particularmente achamos difícil, já que o carro chegaria custando alto e num valor semelhante ao nosso Agile. Além do mais, a versão hatch, como a dessas fotos, não teria espaço aqui no país.

De toda forma, no momento são apenas especulações. Vamos esperar para ver o que acontece.

The thermos arrived and we tested it by filling with boiling water and checking the temperature after 12 hours. The water was still 190 degrees. After 36 hours we still registerd a temp of 125. That aspect of the thermos works well. It did however arrive damaged, due to poor packing.

I bought this to give as a gift. I’ve had one for years and couldn’t do without it. Anytime I’m going to be in the car all day or when I travel I always have a thermos of coffee with me (as well as a few cold drinks in the thermo-electric cooler). El Aveo llega desde México, precedido de una excelente reputación merecidamente ganada en varios países de la región como Chile, Venezuela y Colombia, mercados en los que se ha colocado como el modelo más vendido de la marca. En nuestro país, con apenas un par de semanas transcurridas desde su lanzamiento, los niveles de preventas efectuadas a través de la red de Concesionarios, superan ampliamente las expectativas iniciales.

El primer contacto visual, es agradable. Si bien es un sedán mediano de 4,31 mts de largo, 1,70 de ancho y 1,505 de alto, aparenta ser un poco más grande de lo que es en realidad. El sector frontal se asemeja al de los demás modelos nuevos de Chevrolet, y su perfil es interesante. La cintura en forma de cuña es relativamente alta, de tal modo que las ventanas de las puertas mantienen un buen tamaño. La curvatura del techo es abierta, finalizando en la parte trasera muy cerca de la cola, dando lugar apenas para la tapa del baúl. Por lo tanto, el sector trasero es alto, conteniendo los grandes faros semi trapezoidales que se prolongan levemente hacia los laterales.

Se mantiene en todo su exterior un cierto espíritu de la línea Corsa, pero con resoluciones más modernas de diseño que definen la personalidad de este nuevo modelo. Las llantas le aportan la cuota justa de deportividad.

El acceso es muy cómodo para cualquiera de las ubicaciones, gracias a la buena apertura de las puertas y a la altura de los asientos y del auto en su conjunto, a pesar de que el rodado es de 15”. Una vez en el interior, se aprecia un ambiente espacioso y agradable tanto en plazas delanteras como traseras, aunque en estas últimas, si se trata de personas de gran estatura, puede rozar levemente la cabeza con el techo, debido a la curvatura descendente.

Los materiales utilizados son agradables a la vista y al tacto, con buena terminación y ajustes correctos, destacándose algunas aplicaciones en aluminio que le aportan un toque de fineza.

La posición del conductor es muy buena y fácil de ajustar, de acuerdo a las características de quien asume esa función, a través de todas las regulaciones posibles del asiento, que además son todos ellos, cómodos y confortables. El panel de instrumentos es muy simple e intuitivo. Al tomar el volante, el conductor no se siente apabullado por infinidad de comandos y alertas, a pesar de lo cual este modelo cuenta con todo lo necesario para disfrutar de una conducción segura y confortable. En la parte central, se encuentra el equipo de audio, dotado de comandos muy prácticos y funcionales para su control. Por debajo, están los del sistema de aire y ventilación, y con sistema eyectable a través de una pulsación, se encuentra un original posavasos doble. Hay además, varios huecos guardaobjetos en la consola central, uno de ellos cerrado.

La visibilidad es muy buena en todas las direcciones. Si bien la cola es alta y puede dificultar la visión a través del espejo interior, se compensa perfectamente con el gran tamaño de los exteriores, que abarcan un campo visual muy amplio.

Para la puesta en marcha, se requiere mantener el pedal de embrague presionado. El mecanismo de cambios de marchas, es del tipo firme, que requiere ejercer una pequeña fuerza para efectuar dicho cambio.

La propulsión del Aveo, la genera un motor de 4 cilindros con 1.600 cc de cilindrada y 103 HP de potencia. Es llamativo el importante torque de 140 Nm, disponible a muy bajas revoluciones. Gracias a ello, el comportamiento del auto en el tránsito urbano es ejemplar. Tanto en la partida con el vehículo detenido como cuando está circulando a baja velocidad, responde rápidamente con la sola presión del acelerador, sin tener que recurrir al cambio de marcha.

La suspensión es firme, y absorbe muy bien las irregularidades de las calles. A pesar de ello, una vez que comenzamos a rodar en carretera, se comporta con mucha suavidad, con movimientos semejantes al de los clásicos Impala cuando pasaban sobre las ondulaciones de la ruta. Se siente como si fuera un auto grande y de buen peso, y es muy agradable transitar por carreteras sinuosas, pues se comporta muy firme a la hora de encarar las curvas.

En velocidades altas, a las que llega con relativa facilidad, se escucha el sonido del aire, esencialmente cuando hay viento fuerte de frente.

La versión más equipada del Aveo, que fue la que pudimos probar, cuenta con dos airbags, aire acondicionado, dirección hidráulica, ABS, levantavidrios, etc. El sistema de circulación y dirección del aire en el interior, es muy eficiente. Por otra parte, nos parece que si bien cuenta con bloqueo central, podría haberse incorporado el bloqueo automático de puertas cuando el vehículo comienza a circular, un detalle faltante que terminaría de completar su buen equipamiento.

Tiene apertura interior de la tapa del tanque de combustible y del baúl, que también puede abrirse desde el comando que trae incorporado la llave de encendido, mecanismo que resulta sumamente prácitco. Dicho maletero, tiene una buena capacidad que se ubica en el orden de los 350 lts.

Hace unos dias, escuché un anuncio en la radio del Chevrolet Aveo, en el cual se lo identificaba como un auto con una seguridad tanto activa como pasiva, excelente. Al final del aviso, aparecia la frase “Tan seguro como estar en casa”.

Esto es falso, y los tests de Euroncap son una clara evidencia, ya que en la prueba de proteccion a los ocupantes obtuvo solo dos estrellas, y la segunda tachada.

Ademas los comentarios de Euroncap sobre la prueba no son nada favorables:

Impacto frontal

La deformacion estructural, indica que la estructura fue sobrecargada, y como consecuencia se transformo en inestable. El movimiento hacia atras del parante A, lo penaliza. El movimiento del volante presenta un riesgo para la cabeza del conductor. El pecho del conductor hizo contacto con el volante. La compresion del pecho del conductor, indica un riesgo de lesiones mortales inaceptable.
Como resultado, la estrella final de proteccion de adultos esta tachada.
Estructuras en el tablero representaron un riesgo potencial para las rodillas y el femur de conductor y pasajero. No se le adjudicaron puntos por la proteccion ofrecida a los pies.

Ocupantes niños

El airbag de pasajero puede ser desactivado para permitir una silla de niño ubicada en sentido contrario a la marcha. Pero el dispositivo de desactivacion no esta marcado claramentey la informacion de el estado de el airbag tampoco esta suficientemente clara. La presencia de anclajes ISOFIX en el asiento trasero no estaba bien indicada.

#8 in Top 10 Clunker purchases

Two pickups are among the top 10 new vehicles purchased under the cash-for-clunkers program, new government data show. That gives credence to claims that the incentive boosted truck sales as it promoted cars, which have better fuel efficiency. The Chevrolet Silverado ranked No. 8 among cash-for-clunkers purchases, and the Ford F-150 finished 10th.The top four sellers — the Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Toyota Camry and Ford Focus — did not change with the new government data, posted late yesterday on the cars.gov Web site. But federal rankings released in late August, when cash for clunkers ended, had listed separately each model’s front-wheel-drive, all-wheel-drive, hybrid and/or flex-fuel versions. That gave a top 10 list that had no pickups and only one small SUV — the fwd Ford Escape.

Combining the models’ versions and then ranking the models give a different top 10.

The Escape moves to fifth among new cash-for-clunkers sellers. Its fwd version had ranked 10th in the previous government rankings. The Honda CR-V, another small SUV, placed sixth in the new rankings. It hadn’t finished in the previous top 10 because government data had separated its fwd and four-wheel-drive versions.

The Hyundai Elantra moves to seventh from its spot at No. 5 in the previous rankings. Next comes the Silverado, followed by the ninth-place Nissan Versa, which had finished sixth in the previous ranking. The F-150 rounds out the new top 10.

Displaced vehicles

The vehicles bumped out of the previous top 10 — the seventh-place Toyota Prius, eighth-place Honda Accord and ninth-place Honda Fit — find homes in the top 20 cash-for-clunkers sellers, according to the new data. The Accord ranks 11th, the Prius 14th and the Fit 17th. Previously, the government had not released data for vehicles that weren’t in its top 10.

Government data released when the cash-for-clunkers program ended had shown that Category 1, 2 and 3 trucks had made up 41 percent of new-vehicle purchases, while 84 percent of trade-ins had been trucks. Those percentages haven’t changed so the new data don’t undermine the government’s assertion that the program moved many people from trucks to more fuel-efficient cars.

But some critics had said the previous top 10 made the program look greener than it was by omitting top-selling trucks. For instance, consumer auto site Edmunds.com used sales data it gets from dealer transaction reports to compile a list of top 10 clunker sellers that included the F-150, Honda CR-V and Chevrolet Silverado.

The two-wheel-drive 2010 versions of the three new vehicles on the government’s top 10 list average about 19 mpg in combined city and highway driving, according to federal fuel economy estimates. That compares with the 35 mpg combined fuel economy average of the three vehicles that dropped off the top 10.

Under the program’s rules, consumers had to trade in vehicles that got poor gas mileage for new ones with better fuel efficiency, unless they were buying the heaviest category of truck.

El pasado martes 15, en un espléndido día soleado plenamente disfrutable en las instalaciones del quincho del Club de Golf, y con la presencia de autoridades de GM Uruguay, pilotos de la Fórmula Chevrolet, clientes, Concesionarios, amigos y por cierto, toda la prensa especializada, se presentó en sociedad el nuevo modelo Aveo.

Este automóvil, número uno en ventas en distintos países del mundo, llega para ubicarse en el segmento de los medianos, con 4,31 mts de largo, 1,70 de ancho y 1,505 de alto. Es un sedán de líneas sobrias, con un diseño musculoso tanto en el frontal, a través de la parrilla de un solo elemento y los grandes faros semienvolventes, como en los laterales, donde se aprecia la cintura alta marcada por una moldura en forma de cuña.

Se destacan en el Aveo la disponibilidad de espacio tanto en el interior como en el maletero de 350 lts., un gran nivel de equipamiento con abundancia de elementos de seguridad como airbags frontales y ABS, y buena potencia a través de un propulsor de 1.6 cc. que genera 103 CV de potencia, manteniendo una excelente relación costo/beneficio. De serie cuenta con aire acondicionado, dirección hidráulica, levanta vidrios eléctricos y llantas de 15”, entre otros elementos de confort y protección para los ocupantes.

This morning, as I made my way down the Trail of Tears to the town of Scooba, I passed a man in a reddish-shall-we-say-bleeding-into-burgundy Chevy Aveo…reading a book.

While he drove.

The Bible, children, is always spelled with a capital "B."

We were heading into that infamously, always congested section of highway right outside a town, or village, or tribe, known simply by the wooden staked sign, signaling both the start and the end of what appears to be a mostly dirt road, bearing the mysterious name of Wahalak.

For some reason, and I feel that voodoo has a large part to do with it, they simply cannot get this portion of the road stabilized. They’ve been working in this same exact spot for a solid month, at least. And by they, I don’t mean men from the county jail – that’s who they hire up the road in Macon – no, I mean bona fide employees of the state of Mississippi.

Personally, I don’t mind the decrescendo of their slow progress. I enjoy being a deliberate passer-by of Wahalak because I like to say the word “wahalak.” I do. I say it out loud every morning and afternoon when I drive past it.

Wahalak means “running water,” but that is so unoriginal and less than exciting that I’m going to have to make up a new definition.

Did you know? The name Wahalak refers to madness and amnesia, in the common Choctaw tongue of today’s tribes. During the Mississippian Epoch of the Carboniferous Period, however, the term was often used as a directional indicator signifying various geographical areas within a tribe’s property where the evil dead were buried, having been sacrificed to the gods for their wicked and abusive ways. (i.e., Stephen King’s Pet Sematary, misspelled accordingly). Also, and this part is actually true, Wahalak is best known as the temporary hideout of fugitive Kenny Wagner, who was on the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list in the 1950’s.

Ahem.

I lie because I needed a hobby when I was six and that was the only thing I was good at.

What I wanted to tell you was that the man, in the Aveo, he was reading the Bible. The Book of Jeremiah, to be exact.

I’d gotten in the passing lane (which, by the way, People, is the fast lane, on the left side), and I had every intention of getting around this man so that I could lead the charge through the orange cones and the death-defying men who paint the dotted lines down the middle of the roads.  They have no patience for you or your car.

But, when I saw that he was reading, I got curious. So, I paced myself. (He never once looked up).

Then, when I saw that he was reading the Bible, I got nervous. Like, this was a sign. (Word to the wise: Anytime someone is reading the Bible in your very presence, it’s probably a warning from God that you’re sinning too much, as of late. Especially, if they’re reading the Bible while operating a vehicle – and you only know that because you’re driving alongside them).

I would have prayed about it, but I had to merge. The left lane was closing, and fast. The accompanying road sign stated that the “left lane would be closed for the Next 22 Miles.” If only I could have kept up with him, I might have gotten the whole chapter read.

Lord knows I need it.

Then, it struck me. Wasn’t Jeremiah one of the Naysaying Doomsday Prophets? (I’ll cross-reference that more, later, over wine…but yes, he was).

Good enough for Jesus, but not Southern Baptists.

So, anyway, here’s this man, reading Jeremiah, KJV-version splayed across his steering wheel, reading glasses on high alert, maneuvering on faith, I suppose, through the treacherous Wahalak sliver of Highway 45…and then, there’s me, trying to read over his seatbelt.

I barely made it around him. A few seconds later and I would have gotten up close and personal with the man on the walkie-talkie…who I might add was also staring at this devout, if his devotion was a little misplaced, Bible Belter.

I also was rather taken with the way he was sitting behind the wheel, like a vice (i.e., the clamp not a form of immorality).

He was scooted so far up to the wheel, itself, that I’m not sure he wasn’t driving with his nipples. I’ve never in my life seen anyone sit so close to the wheel of a car.  It almost triggered my asthma. (Remember: Sucks to your ass-mar, Piggy)?

And then, for the duration of my sojourn into Scooba, all I could think about was what the way you drive a car says about you. I mean, I have no doubt in my mind at all that this man is a tightwad. Albeit, he might be a well-intentioned tightwad…but come on, you don’t drive a car frenching a steering wheel to that degree and not know how to stretch a dollar until the eagle grins.

Here, you try one.

I’ll set the scene: tinted windows, rolled down, clove cigarette, and a seat reclined to such an extent that a) it appears the car is driving itself, and b) your forehead is in the trunk. Now, characterize that driver. Or, what about this: the car is immaculately clean, spotless; hands are at 10:00 and 2:00 (two times of the day that mean nothing to you other than 10:00 is still two of the longest hours before lunch, and 2:00 is just a hateful hour, plain and simple), the shoulders are squared and the neck unable to turn. Who does this remind you of? (Aunt Lola).

I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I shifted my position a thousand times, trying to find just the right “feel” of the car against my backside. How did I look while driving? I turned the rearview mirror onto my face (not the first time, either, I assure you) and tried to picture what others see when they look at me behind the wheel.

I was more than pleased, but then again, to be fair, the rearview mirror’s on my good side.

I like to think that I look scholarly while driving. But then, I caught myself hanging my left wrist on the top of the wheel, limped ,and resting my right elbow on the arm rest. That doesn’t look scholarly, at all. That looks like how a Secret would drive, like a husband having an affair would drive…showing off the absence of a wedding ring…I was ashamed of myself.

It's OK if your finger itches, as long as you're not holding a gun.

I also weirded myself out a bit…I mean, who on earth thinks up things like this?? Whatever happened to just “driving to work?” Does everything have to be an adventure, a story, a piece of fiction, a make-believe world of comedy and tragedy, Kris??

Well, I have an answer, so listen up, because I’m rarely this sure about things…but the answer to that question is Yes.

Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes…everything, and I mean Every Thing, most absolutely, positively, has to be.

And if you don’t believe me, don’t worry: I drive a 4-door.

You just show up, put your seatbelt on…and above all, make sure you bring your Bible.

Jakarta, 14 Agustus 2009 - Bulan Juli 2009 menjadi bulannya Toyota. Salah satu andalannya di kelas 4×2 compact medium, Toyota Yaris, berhasil mencatat penjualan tertinggi dengan raihan 1.033 unit. Angka ini menyalip Honda All New Jazz yang selama ini menjadi raja.

Beralihnya penguasa di kelas ini menunjukkan bahwa persaingan di kelas compact medium memang cukup ketat. Selama enam bulan pertama, Jazz selalu menjadi pimpinan dengan rata-rata penjualan di atas 1.000 unit per bulan. Hanya saja di bulan Juli, Jazz mengalami penurunan menjadi 891 unit.

Sebaliknya, di Juli, Yaris melejit dengan penjualan 1.033 unit. Raihan ini cukup mengejutkan. Dari data Gabungan Industri Kendaraan Bermotor Indonesia (Gaikindo), di bulan Maret, Yaris hanya mencatat penjualan 33 unit. Namun setelah itu mereka terus menunjukkan grafiks kenaikan. Diawali bulan April (327 unit), Mei (657 unit), Juni (716 unit) dan Juli (1.033 unit).

Meski jika ditotal sepanjang tahun ini, Jazz masih tertinggi dengan penjualan 8.341 unit. Yaris sendiri mencatat angka 3.336 unit, disusul Suzuki Swift (2.371 unit), Nissan Livina XR dan X-Gear (2.154 unit) dan Chevrolet Aveo (119 unit).

“Dari sisi penjualan produk, selain memimpin kelasnya, Yaris juga mencatatkan peningkatan terbesar dibanding rival lainnya, yaitu mencapai 44,3%,” kata Johnny Darmawan, Presiden Direktur PT Toyota-Astra Motor. “Peningkatan yang dialami Yaris jauh lebih tinggi dari pertumbuhan kelas kendaraan 4×2 Compact Medium, yaitu sekitar 2,5%.”

Apakah Yaris akan terus merajai kelas ini? Tersalipnya Jazz, jelas jadi tantangan bagi Honda. Mereka dipastikan akan berusaha kembali menjadi yang terbaik.

Juga harus diwaspadai pendatang baru Hyundai i20 yang baru diperkenalkan pertengahan Juli. i20 baru akan tercatat penjualannya pada data Gaikindo di bulan Agustus mendatang. Yang pasti akan sangat menarik menunggu persaingan ketat di kelas ini bulan depan.

Shopping in Camberley over the weekend….Two parts – The Travesty of the Chevy Aveo and the Awesome VW Baja Bug… (you may wish to skip to the VW Baja bug part…)

As I had to go shopping & visit the bank at the weekend, and Chris has some trips to take during the week, I hired a cheap car.

It’s a Chevrolet Aveo, and it’s all wrong!

It looks okay inside and out (once you ignore the huge cheap plastic Chevrolet badge), but once you get tactile, the thing proves to be very cheap and flimsy. Thin plastic dashboard, body panels that pop in and out – but to look at, it’s not bad….

Once the engine starts and you pull away…. eventually…. you gain some speed…. then you’ll have to steer….

It wallows and rolls from the lowest speeds and gets worse as you get faster. The steering is super light and the slightest turn of the wheel has the car turning as though it’s one of those bikes from Disney’s “Tron“! Trouble is, it feels like it’s about to fall over at any moment! It is actually scary!

It’s a bit like a speed boat… It drives as though it is about to flip over and the steering is far too light! It’s so light the car needs constant adjusting to stay straight – Not great on a motorway!

Worse still is the suspension! For all of that wallowing and threats to roll the car over at walking pace, you end up breaking your back if you hit pebbles or slight bumps in the road! How can the ride be so harsh when the handling is so soft and pathetic?!

Fuel economy is great though…. So it looks alright, economy is great… ride is terrible and handling is more vague than a cornered politician.

BUT…. once it was parked in the Camberley car park things picked up! Well…. that’s because we had parked next to the most awesome of VW Beetles!

Alex thought it was brilliant – A big Herbie! Big Racing Herbie!!! – and I think he was spot on! It was brilliant! I’m not a great VW Bug fan, but this one looked fantastic! Thumbs up to the VW Baja Bug!

I took the opportunity to use my iPhone photo adjustment applications. Due to the car park environment the Beetle didn’t really stand out – but some new software on the iPhone (ColorSplash and Photogene) produced some great shots!
