I know, you live and die Adobe Products. So do I. But maybe Aviary deserves our attention, and a chance? It is free after all. You can’t beat that.

Shadows Chasing Ghosts are set to play upstairs in Newcastle’s o2 Academy for the third time this year. Each time, more and more kids have been turning up, and tonight is no exception, people turning up early in their droves. With the band’s van sidelined round the back of the venue, hopefully it’ll be a show to take their mind off travelling blues, and leave a lasting impression; only time will tell.

There’s three of them, they name their songs in a daft manner full of meaningless long words plucked from the dictionary, and they sound like Muse. Trouble is, they’re not Muse, and openers Starblind slightly dampen the evening’s proceedings, if anything. With the crowd still filing in staying static, it’s almost not fair on the band, who in all honesty, can play their instruments really well. Their song structure is impressive for a bunch of locals, but it’s the cringe-worthy singing that knocks it all out-of-touch. There’s only one Matthew Bellamy, and, unfortunately, anyone trying to match up doesn’t even come close.

Newcastle kids 3 Ways Of Thinking sound oddly heavy tonight. Starting things off with a rapturous collection of riffs and bass pedals, it seems they might of found their sound. Kicking off with some energetic bursts of popcore, the room finally begins to move, if only somewhat. Some would say chucking a breakdown into a Cascada track (single Evacuate The Dancefloor) is genius, some would say utterly embarrassing, but pint-sized vocalista Rachel Clamp manages to pull it off very well, certainly suited to the poppier side of the spectrum, even if there’s some slight warbling at times. Massive kudos goes to guitarist Sam Coates who pulls out a fantastic solo from nowhere, making the cover the pick of the set. While it’s an odd combination, female vocals intertwined with a Me Vs Hero-esque landscape, it seems the band may be onto something fun and quirky, and with none of it’s members even nearly out of their teens, it’s something 3 Ways… have a lot of time to experiment with.

In Oceans is a name barely heard around the local scene in the North-East it seems, but where this gem’s been hiding is anyone’s guess. Giving the same oozing and quite frankly strange sounds comparable to the likes of Blakfish, whilst dishing out chunk after chunk of an underOATH-ish quality, they grind out their noise and finally get the crowds opened and moving. Their music seems strangely melodic at times, despite the growling, grunting vocals of frontman Stefano, and the crowd certainly seem to warm to it. Maybe it’s because it’s the first sign of any aggression, but either way, In Oceans make an impact, and it’ll be interesting to see where they go from this pretty solid performance.

Local lads Aviary played with Shadows last time they were in Newcastle, in this very room. They were great then, and tonight they’re even better. Their music seems to have developed a great structure, and brilliant melodic guitar work bodes well with their punishing screams and bass pedal combos. The band’s songs sound a hell of a lot stronger live than on record, We The Omega sounds massive whereas it sounds tinny and demo-ey recorded, and it pays off; it’s obviously impressing a lot of people. By this time, the room has pretty much warmed to whatever slightly moveable music gets thrust at it, and the crowd get right into this. Catch them while you can – it sounds like they’re onto something big.

Despite only having an EP to their name, Shadows Chasing Ghosts have managed to pack tonight out; not a single ticket left. So when they take to the stage just before ten, it’s no surprise to see almost 400 kids bursting into applause. Kicking off with Thumbelina’s Story, the floor opens (and rather unfortunately, gets swarmed with hardcore dancers), and the 5-piece unleash fury upon the room. The band always seem to make an impression live, but tonight it’s just that much sweeter, being their own show. Frontman Trey Tremain’s constant switching between ruthless harsh tones and emotional melodics work wonders for the songs, and unlike a lot of other bands, his voice can be heard perfectly.

Jumping to the barrier (and staying there for at least three-quarters of the set) he leads all manner of chants and singalongs, including relentless EP track Girl In Sheeps Clothing, and a couple of new tracks in the form of SOS and You Ain’t Got The Minerals thrown in for good measure and some variation; the latter two tracks give off the same particular sound the band show on the EP songs, but the structure sounds tighter; the poppier parts sound poppier whilst the heavier parts sound beefy and destructive, which reflects upon the room which by now is in full swing, bodies bouncing from all corners.

A brilliant twist sees Needle end the set by starting acoustically, before the whole band join in and kick it off which makes for a superb closer. More songs wouldn’t of gone a miss, but a band can only play what they know; it does no harm to a great performance. With more people seeming to know the words to songs growing by the gig, and the gigs themselves packing more and more kids, Shadows are well on their way uphill – just try and stop them.

I’ll put these babies in the same entries since they are being raised together. Some sad news about Cocoa’s babies, the 2 youngest did not make it. For first time parents there was a ton of stress on them but I suspect they weren’t purposely harmed by the parents but rather it was just their inexperience. So I have their 2 bubs and 3 of Ginger’s out right now- Ginger has one more in the nest doing well, but is small yet and I’ll be pulling that one in about 2 days I think. All blue series bubs but I guess I’ll be getting sea greens from Cocoa and Jimmy by the looks of the oldest, not so bad considering the splits the males will carry, they will make some beautiful baby girls one day. At least one of Ginger’s babies is definitely blue but this clutch is a toss up because of the stud service she received That ’stud’ is up for sale BTW, taking reasonable offers!

Well, flight practice has begun and the 2 oldest have flown short hops, the 2 youngest are afraid still and like taking the bus. They were moved to a cage yesterday and are a bit in shock of all the space. Even after covering it so it was dark they still stayed in one spot. This morning they are more comfortable though.

Hay varios factores que están causando esta circunstancia. En primer lugar las inversiones en empresas tecnológicas son menores que en las financieras. Por otra parte, es más fácil reclutar ya que en la actualidad los ingenieros con talento que normalmente acababan en empresas financieras con sueldos imposibles están en el mercado y sus pretensiones económicas no son las de hace unos años, donde una subida del 20% anual era casi obligada.

Es significativo el dato del Encuentro Tecnológico para inversores de este año, donde se dieron cita más de 500 personas, contra los apenas 30 que acudieron hace dos años. Aviary Décor Introduces a Hip Wine Bar with Modern Sophistication

South Austin haute home décor shop Aviary is now making its mark as a hip sip-and-shop wine lounge offering a fresh new twist on a “night out” with a chic home-like setting. There is something “official” about Facebook that I have yet to understand so until these flyers are reviewed by dj spaNk they will be fan art here.  These images were created at http://www.aviary.com  most amazing site I’ve seen in awhile.

They’re at that stage when they are really getting cute!….feathers don’t hurt either ;P

Coyote Park, where I go running has a reasonably large aviary with some cool looking birds. This one was sitting on and eating from a lump of meat.

Je découvre assez étonné chez Tapahont.info que l’ambitieuse suite Aviary possède maintenant un logiciel de son: Myna. Logique finalement quand on prétend couvrir toute la création numérique en ligne.

C’est donc un véritable éditeur multipiste qui est à ta disposition et pour être honnête, j’ai été assez bluffé à la première prise en main, mais on y reviendra.

Une banque son très large, un catalogue de loops très fourni avec lequel il et très facile de faire une ambiance musicale pour un clip ou une production quelconque. Le résultat une fois mixé est dispo en téléchargement MP3. Je te propose 3 petits essais d’ambiance:

La particularité d’Aviary est que tout ce que tu fais est Creative Commons. Il faut payer pour pouvoir planquer ta production. Les autres peuvent prendre ta “création”, c’est à dire faire une copie pour démarrer une nouvelle version, utiliser ton mix comme point de départ. Et je trouve ça très bien, collaboratif 2.0 quoi! Tu peux donc voir les fichiers sources des tous les utilisateurs qui n’ont pas payé la version premium.

Mais soyons clairs, une fois de plus il n’est pas question de faire de la musique, il est question d’arranger une séquence sonore. Ce qui est déjà très bien. Pas de prise audio en live, mais on peut enregistrer un son qui va se retrouver disponible dans une banque “perso”. Tout cela est très bien mais…

Je ne comprends pas. J’ai testé toutes ces applis Aviary, d’autres également (photoshop.com par exemple) et à chaque fois c’est le même scénario pour moi: je suis bluffé, vraiment impressionné par le travail des développeurs, même de l’ergonomie, mais au bout du compte après quelques essais le constat est amer: inutile. Incroyable d’arriver à faire ça en ligne mais pour ce qui est de faire un vrai travail graphique, ce n’est juste pas à la hauteur. Et comme ce sont des softs qui se veulent assez poussés, je ne vois pas le grand publique s’en servir. Donc au final on se trouve avec un outil trop faible pour les graphistes, et trop fort pour les néophytes. Alors je m’inquiète pour eux

Ponctuellement l’outil peut servir, mais la came est loin d’être assez bonne pour prétendre à l’addiction des utilisateurs. Enfin c’est ce qu’il me semble, et ça me gêne de le dire, car encore une fois, quel beau boulot. Je crois beaucoup plus à des outils intégrés à d’autres plateformes comme le génial Picnik qui remplit bien son rôle, bien mieux ciblé me semble-t-il.

Reste que l’aspect collaboratif du site et certains outils sont intéressants, je t’engage donc vivement à quand même essayer si tu ne connais pas.

It’s been 4 days and we have a combined weight gain of 33 grams. The oldest is already flapping it’s wings and getting curious, and decided that head rubbing is wonderful, especially with all those feathers coming lol I had thought the youngest would be Am. Cinn (wishful thinking) but in fact it looks like it be standard green. They had their first bath today and were not quite dry in the pics, but here they are

I go to pull the babies and there are 4 not 3, that little hen has got some rear on her to hide an egg and a baby all this time lol It is a very robust pair, healthy and fit so I probably shouldn’t coplain about it.

They will start to grow and feather out  quickly now that they’re in the brooder. It’s always interesting to see the coloring come in on the pieds and I’m curious to see if this american cinnamon is white faced or not like my Cocoa (Cocoa was from this same pair).

For those following the happenings in the aviary, some news about Cocoa and Jimmy. Jimmy has not been eating enough for himself it seems, which wasn’t a problem until the nights turned chilly. He’s been doing a bang up job of feeding Cocoa but he couldn’t keep up like that so I’ve had to risk losing the babies by upsetting Cocoa and bring them all in the house. I am hoping that she will be fine when the babies hatch next week because she was handfed and raised by me but I won’t know that until the time comes They’re both doing good so keep your fingers crossed!

Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.0 (s adbe) doesn’t disappoint. PSE 6 has been a fantastic software tool, and version 8 promises to be even better at a still-reasonable $99.95 (a ten dollar increase from PSE 6). I enthusiastically recommend it and wouldn’t want to be without it. There are alternatives to Photoshop Elements, however, including a gaggle of online image editing programs offered either for free or a modest fee. None of them holds a candle to full-fledged bitmap image editors like Photoshop Elements, Pixelmator or Acorn in terms of power and sophistication, but depending on your needs, image editing “in the cloud” could be all you require.

To check out the possibilities I tested several image editing sites, and found them a somewhat mixed bag, but was pleasantly surprised by how good several were. Here’s what I discovered.

Sumo Paint 2.0

One of my favorites is Snap Group Ltd’s Sumo Paint, which can be used as a paint program and photo editing program, and which was recently upgraded with a claimed 100-plus improvements, and a totally renovated web site to make it easier, faster, and more attractive, and several new tools:  Layer FX, Change Layers With Blending Modes, change layer alpha, Shapes Tool, Brushes, Ink Brush Tool, Gradient Tool, Shape Trails, Zooming, Symmetry Tool , Color Picker, Swatches, Smudge Tool, and Custom Shape Tool.

Along with Pixlr (see below), I found Sumo Paint’s user interface to be the most Mac-like in a Photoshop-ish sort of way.

Sumo Paint works with any browser that has the Flash player plugin (ver 9). You can find the Sumo Paint user manual here.

Fotoflexer

Another free online image editor I liked a lot was Fotoflexer, which is impressively fast and slick, with no registration or login necessary. Fotoflexer doesn’t have as many tools as Sumo Paint or some of the other online image editors I tried, and they’re laid out in a non-orthodox configuration, but it’s pretty intuitive, fast and responsive, and the adjustments refresh in real time so you can finely tune your enhancements visually as you move the sliders.

This is a very-well executed tool with a convenient full-screen mode that’s easy and fast to get in and out of.

Aviary Phoenix Image Editor

Phoenix is part of the Aviary online image editing suite, and has a range of functions from basic image retouching to complex effects, providing the key features of a desktop image editor, with the simplicity and accessibility of a web-based application.

Its suite of creation and editing tools includes undo and redo, brushes, magic wand, and blend modes. Phoenix also supports layers, groups, and layer masks, and has an intuitive drag and drop interface.

Other features are collaboration with other users, step-by-step tutorials to learn new skills, and image import from popular photo-sharing sites like Flickr, Picasa, and Facebook.

Aviary offers Phoenix in a free basic plan plus a premium Pro plans that allows more control over the application’s usage ($24.99 a year).

Phoenix is a good program, and well worth checking out, but I didn’t like it as much as some of the others. for more details, check out our previous posts on Aviary.

Pixlr

Another online image editor is Pixlr from Sweden. It’s free (donations accepted), starts up very quickly with no login required, and has a good selection of tools, adjustments and filters that work quite similarly to functions in Photoshop, including tools such as layers, image adjustments, and the magic wand, and which I found generally work well, although one thing I didn’t like is that the adjustments don’t refresh in real time as you move the sliders.

Pixlr also supports multiple languages, and an available Pixlr plugin for Firefox turns your browser into an image editor. Once the plugin is installed, you’ll notice a little icon in the Firefox status bar that you can click to automatically import any web page you’re on to Pixlr for editing. Or if you just want to edit an image from the web, right click and select Edit in Pixlr. The image editor will open in a new tab and load the picture automatically.

Dr. Pic by PicResize

PicResize has been around since March 2005 and claims to be one of the most popular online image editing tools available on the Internet due to its ease of use, with more than 5 million pictures resized and edited to date. In late 2008, PicResize’s online picture editor, PicResize 3.0, was renamed DrPic.com. The service is free, and promises to remain so.

DrPic.com uses HTML and Ajax with absolutely no Flash, so no plugin is required. In testing I found it fast, but doesn’t have a lot of tools, and the image view is especially clunky, with no standard “File” and “Edit” command menus, and I wasn’t terribly impressed with its capabilities.

Free forever is great, but here are other, better choices.

Piknik

I also tried Piknik, which has the virtue of fast startup and no login hassle, but I didn’t find the free version up to much. You would want to upgrade to the for-fee premium version with this one, at a cost of $2.08 to $24.95 a month.

Based on what I could gather from the free basic version, Sumo Paint, Fotoflexer or Pixlr would be better free alternatives.

Which online image editing tool do you use and why?

Cada poco me sorprendo con una nueva función que puedo hacer desde el navegador. Es especialmente llamativo el caso de Firefox, con todo su ecosistema de extensiones.

En este contexto, cada vez entiendo más el nuevo sistema operativo de Google, Chrome OS. Es sólo una evolución natural: primero pasamos gran cantidad de nuestros datos a la “nube”, después comenzamos los programas al navegador y finalmente, el navegador es un pilar fundamental de nuestro sistema operativo. Las prestaciones de nuestro ordenador son menos importantes y la calidad y prestaciones de nuestro proveedor de servicios (vease Google, Flickr, etc) se convierte en fundamentales.

Todas estas ideas rondaban por mi cabeza al probar Aviary. En esta web se integran un buen conjunto de aplicaciones multimedia: Tratamiento de imagen, gráficos vectoriales, retoque de sonido, editor de color capturador de pantalla, etc.

La estética creo que imita, sin conseguirlo, a la de Picnik, web de referencia para el tratamiento de imagen on line. Sin embargo, si hablamos de prestaciones, supera ampliamente a la de Picnik. Sin llegar, al nivel de los programas específicos, la cantidad de funcionalidades, es abrumadora. Tanto que puede hacerse un poco difícil de usar.

No requiere registro y no tiene, a día de hoy, opciones reservadas a clientes premium. Nos permite importar imágenes de Picasa Flickr y Picasa – Eso sí, la web está en inglés.

En conjunto, me gusta mucho y en las pruebas que he realizado se ha comportado bien

Peaceful slumber

This was shot in Karanji lake in Mysore amidst all birds in the Aviary. The dog did not seem to be bothered at all by them or  the noises. We apparently spend almost half our lives with our eyes closed (literally, sleep+blinking). Wonder how much a dog does?
