Actor and aviator Cliff Robertson (Uncle Ben to Spiderman folks) was unable, for health reasons, to join us for his induction into the International Aerospace Hall of Fame. Luckily he felt well enough (Must have been a spider bite! Sorry, I had to) to call us on the phone and tell us what aviation has meant to him and his life. Listen below:

He is a pilot, an Academy Award and Emmy-Award-winning actor as well as the founder of a very popular youth program within the EAA. He is Cliff Robertson.

Robertson was born in La Jolla, California in 1925 and it was here that he developed a love for aviation. He would ride his bike several miles each day to work at Speer airport, where he would clean airplanes in return for flights in a piper cub. However, Cliff would leave the area to serve his country during World War Two and attend Antioch College in Ohio. After college he went to New York and started work acting on stage, film and eventually television, working in such varied shows as the Twilight Zone and Gidget.

His acting career then took off, and he was personally chosen by John F. Kennedy to portray the president in the motion picture P.T. 109 —the story of Kennedy’s heroic World War II exploits as a P.T. Boat skipper. Perhaps he is best known for starring in Charly, an adaptation of Flowers for Algernon for which he won the 1968 Academy Award for Best Actor. Other films included Picnic, Sunday in New York, Autumn Leaves, Too Late the Hero, Three Days of the Condor, Obsession, J. W. Coop, Star 80 and Malone. More recently, Robertson’s career has had a resurgence. He appeared as Uncle Ben Parker in the first movie adaptation of Spider-Man, as well as in the sequels Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3.

Yet with all his success and fame, Cliff’s love for aviation has never waned. While filming in England, Robertson decided to join the Fair oaks Flying Club and soloed in a De Havilland Tiger Moth…he enjoyed the airplane so much he bought one of his own, and eventually owned three of the type. This lead Cliff to purchase another British legend: a Supermarine Spitfire. Over the years he owned other aircraft, including a Messerschmitt Me-108 and a Beech Baron 58. In addition to powered flight, Robertson enjoys gliding and owns a two place glider, a Grob Twin Astir.

However, aviation for Robertson is not strictly a leisurely affair. In 1969, Robertson helped organize an effort to fly food and medical supplies to war ravaged Biafra, Nigeria. For this effort he was presented with AOPA’s Sharples Award, given for “the year’s greatest, selfless commitment to general aviation by a private citizen.” When a famine hit Ethiopia in 1978, Robertson again organized relief flights of supplies to that country. In addition, he is dedicated to helping others experience the joy of flight. Robertson takes an active part in the Cliff Robertson Work Experience Program. Each summer, two youths, 16 or 17 years old, are invited to Oshkosh, through the Experimental Aircraft Association’s Air Academy, where they work for ground and flight instruction. The EAA’s Young Eagles program began in 1992 with Robertson as its first honorary chairman. In 1999, he helped kick off the EAA’s campaign, “Vision of Eagles”, a unique set of initiatives designed to educate, motivate and provide direction to young people through aviation-based activities. As if this wasn’t enough, he has received the EAA’s highest honor, the “Freedom of Flight Award,” for his role in the organization’s “In Pursuit of Dreams” presentation.

For his being one of America’s most influential ambassadors of flight, the San Diego Air & Space Museum take great pride in inducting Cliff Robertson into its International Aerospace Hall of Fame.

Whilst I have parchuted and flown microlights, I have to say that Yves Rossy is a braver man than I – braver than most of us. The carbon-fibre jet-propelled craft, with a span of more than 2m (6ft 6in), is designed for speeds of 220 km/h (138 mph). It has been successfully tested, including a flight across the English Channel in September 2008.

His latest attempt, November 25th 2009, was an attempt to fly from the coast of north Africa, across the Gibraltar Straits landing in Southern Spain. However, the planned 13 minute trip was cut short and Jetman was forced to ditch in to the sea, where he was rescued by a helicopter. For his day job, Jetman flies an Airbus for Swissair. To see him in action visit here

Je me trompais.

Je me trompais.

Écrire cela aujourd’hui me fait sourire …

A Brazilian Senate Commission approved a bill on Wednesday that will allow for an increase of foreign capital in Brazilian airline companies. The Commission on Constitution and Justice (CCJ) decided to allow an increase from 20% to 49% of foreign capital in Brazilian airlines. The decision, however, will have to be approved by the Chamber of Deputies.

According to senators the change would allow Brazilian airlines facing financial woes to obtain much-needed financing abroad. The bill, in Congress since 2004, became a priority this year, after a sharp decline in the industry’s results, due to the effects of the global financial crisis. Brazilian airlines are finding it increasingly difficult to compete with foreign companies, which usually have lower tariffs.

For some time, Brazilian airlines had been lobbying hard for the increase in foreign participation, while foreign investors impatiently waited on the sidelines for a chance to be part of the Brazilian segment. Tired of waiting David Neeleman, founder of JetBlue, took action. Son of a foreign correspondent, Neeleman was born in Brazil, making him eligible to open up his own airline in the country, Azul. The company, born in 2008, is today the country’s third largest airline, losing only to TAM and Gol.

‘Airlines have cancelled more routes out of London than any other city in Europe as a direct result

‘Airlines have cancelled more routes out of London than any other city in Europe as a direct result of the British government’s Air Passenger Duty (APD) tax, according to figures released by insurers.’

‘Industry insiders are worried it could add to the 76 routes already cancelled since March last year.’

According to Ryanair’s chief executive, Michael O’Leary, ‘Gordon Brown’s tourism tax will see Britain lose over 10 million passengers, 10,000 airport jobs and more than UK Pounds 2.5 billion in tourism spend in the UK this year alone’.

He further pointed out that Belgium, Holland, Greece and Spain had already scrapped the tax.

Barbados and the Caribbean will suffer perhaps more than any other
destination and region due to the clearly unfair zoning bands which levies a higher tax on London/Barbados flights than London/San Francisco or other cities on the US pacific coast.

It is difficult to fathom why a clearly unpopular Government on the eve of a General Election would want to alienate tens of thousands of voters that will lose their jobs directly and possible hundreds of thousands indirectly.

Initially presented as an environment tax, it quite obviously is a stealth tax with blatantly discriminating distance bands and the fact that the tax will not payable by often older, less fuel efficient freight aircraft and private jets that could largely afford the extra cost.

Britain ‘s Air Passenger Duty tax: A disaster for the Caribbean

Britannia may no longer rule the waves but its imposition of the November 1 Air Passenger Duty (APD) tax has sent shock waves across the Atlantic that will wash up on Caribbean shores with a devastating effect on the Caribbean tourism industry.

In spite of massive lobbying from home and abroad and objections from airlines, tour operators and tourism organizations including the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), the British government went ahead with its plan to impose the allegedly “green” and controversial Airport Passenger Duty (APD) aimed at taxing aviation’s “carbon emissions.”

CTO secretary general Hugh Riley called the air passenger tax ” illogical and one that will damage tourism to the Caribbean.”

Meanwhile, British Airways, which is greatly increasing service to the region this winter, has denounced what it calls “these huge tax hikes,” warning “it was bad news for holiday makers and completely unjustified.”

Last week I planted my very first tree. Some people assume that we spend all our time at the Woodla

Last week I planted my very first tree. Some people assume that we spend all our time at the Woodland Trust tree planting and walking around beautiful woodlands, but unluckily for the Campaigning team we don’t get out as often as some of our other Trust colleagues so it’s taken me until now to get a chance to get my spade out!

And as an experience, what a first it was for me! Not only was I planting my first tree – such a moving experience and so easy to do – but I was doing it on behalf of a range of organisations concerned about airport expansion including RSPB, WWF and World Development Movement. In partnership with Greenpeace, in front of national media. In the pouring rain. With Richard Briers, Alison Steadman, CarolAnn Duffy, plus politicians of every hue and a whole community in tow. Definitely not my usual Friday!

I was at the Airplot - the strip of land right in the middle of Heathrow’s proposed third runway, which was bought last year by Greenpeace and is co-owned by over 60,000 other people around the world. This entire area was once home to orchards and famed for the Cox Orange Pippin apple. Today the ‘market garden’ for London is under tonnes of tarmac and concrete, the constant roar of aircraft in the air.

Why was the Trust there? Our fight against Stansted is well-known and one of our highest profile cases of woods under threat, where 6 ancient woodlands are at risk of being lost forever from proposals for a new runway. But when it comes to Heathrow, it is the very trees themselves which bring us to Sipson and the surrounding villages. You can read more about our concerns for the ancient and historically important trees that remain (for now) in the area.

The "magnificent" ancient Harlington Yew

The Woodland Trust joined Greenpeace as ‘the tree experts’ supporting their planting of a new orchard and providing a good mix of native hedging to encourage biodiversity and improve pollination. On the day, 13 trees of various types of apple species were planted to complement the allotment established on the site earlier in the year.

I spent an amazing day with Greenpeace at Airplot. There was a wonderful feeling of cameraderie throughout the whole event despite the weather. As we all huddled together under a small marquee (did I mention the rain?) sipping hand-squeezed apple juice fresh from local apples, we listened to local historian Philip Sherwood tell stories about the area as it once was. Then we were treated to a reading by Alison Steadman of a new poem by the Poet Laureate, CarolAnn Duffy, before heading out into the mud with our spades.

I realised the full scope of Heathrow’s plans as I talked to some of the locals from Sipson, Harlington and Harmondsworth. Their hopes that the plans can be defeated are tangible. These villages will all be flattened by BAA’s expansion, and their residents fear for their homes and communities in an uncertain future.

As for the trees that could be lost with them; who knows what secrets old masters like the great Sipson Oak hold? History remembers them being planted, generations have watched them grow. Who can imagine the thousands of species of fungi, plants and wildlife these trees can be host to?

The incredibly resilient Harlington Yew has stood firm for perhaps 1,000 years and continues to grow, even after being manipulated and clipped over the centuries; it was once damaged so badly by a gale that it was left as a stump only 12 feet high – yet as you can see in the photo above, it is still awe-inspiring today. The story of these villages can be epitomised by this beautiful old tree. They may be battered but their spirit will take much more to break.

Aviation is one of the world’s fastest growing source of greenhouse gases. Government and business plans for unremitting airport expansion threatens our natural world and increases the potential for long-term consequences of climate change.

We believe that trees and woods have a valuable role to play in addressing the issue of climate change, but only as part of the solution. We are backing community action to plant a twin tree in solidarity like local Greenpeace groups have been doing all over the country. You can take action too, and there’s no need to stop at one tree!

Together we can all make the UK – one of the least wooded countries in Europe – a place rich in native trees and woods, and show there are strong roots of resistance to the type of large-scale development the aviation industry has to offer.

Though our friend Rob Bach needs no introduction really, my wife Dharma and I felt compelled to write a few words; he is one of those larger than life characters, one of those people you consider yourself lucky to count as a friend. And why wouldn’t he be? if you consider his lineage, he is the son of acclaimed writer Richard Bach and his mother is the amazing editor and author Bette Fineman Bach. So as you might imagine, the material coming from such a luminous constellation is nothing short of rivetting. We enjoy Rob’s work in so many levels. One of the most profound ways in which his words inspire us is the level of humanity with which he writes. Though they capture the adventure in a rich way, they are real, they transcend the mere adventure and reach into the core of the human soul. They really touch the heart and leave you not just entertained, but a changed person. He is a permanent member of our Board of Advisors and it is an honor to have him be our first contributing writer. I hope you all enjoy his work as much as we do. Without further ado, here is Rob Bach:

ON SPACE & TIME, by Rob Bach

So, a moment ago, there was a happily empty space here. It was perfect in its nothingness, calm, cold, content. This absence of things was absolute and expected nothing other than to go merrily along devoid of chaos.

Introduce TIME and entropy started immediately. The Big Bang was like that: once TIME BECAME it screwed up all that perfect peace with STUFF BECOMING at a remarkable (and suddenly measurable) rate.

There, then, was the first trade-off of Perfection for Possibility…and so it is here with the seed of an idea Nik (our kind host) had to make a ripple in your experience.

You.

Just you and nobody else.

I’ve never thought that a story I’d care to write would be read by anyone except Mom (who delights in anything I create today as she did when I was in the first grade). Faced with this new opportunity to write once in a while I’ve decided I’ll write just for You. One person (and Mom).

What You get to read from me will be thoughts on flying airplanes, old and new, working as a pilot for a living, building planes for the heck of it, and capturing it all in words and pictures as artfully as I’m able.

Creation is a wonderful thing even though it destroys what came before. Witnessing that life cycle of ideas made manifest is just as amazing as the creation itself. Even though you may not fly or write or craft imagery you can still be a Watcher.

I’ll never pole vault over a bar set six meters over a giant sponge, but I love to watch dedicated people try to do it. Being the audience for excellence is as important as the achievement itself…and so here You are.

Besides flying, I try to photograph airplanes as art. They are a subject worthy of a lifetime effort…my six meter bar. Capturing the essence of a machine that was built by the hands of a hundred people isn’t easy. Most photographers approach the subject like any other machine and take some very pretty pictures in the process. I’d rather make an image that peels away that first impression of the thing and lets You get a sense of the airplane as something other than You thought it was.

Once in a great while, I’ll get pretty close. And now that I know You are here, I’ll try a little harder to understand what I’m doing.

My next entry might be something about the life of the airline pilot or working with dope and fabric or trying to shoot air-to-air in crummy weather. I have no idea. What do You want?

For now then there is just This and so, as in the Beginning when Something came from Nothing, let there be Light:

Spring Hill (70N) For fishing and picnics Two recent trips to Spring Hill airport in Sterling, PA pr

Spring Hill (70N)
For fishing and picnics

Two recent trips to Spring Hill airport in Sterling, PA proved to be both eventful and learning experiences (when aren’t they?).

Spring Hill sits upon a shelf beside a plateau in the poconos. Given the right conditions, this tiny airport is an extreme challenge. There is a hill at the southwest end of the runway that is severely steep. I don’t suggest taking off from runway 23 with a loaded airplane in the summer just as I don’t suggest trying to climb that hill on foot. Ropes should be required. If you do happen to use the runway, expect the winds to drift you off centerline even before you get to treetop level. I have yet to land on 5. I’ll submit a PIREP if I ever do. Night landings on 5 are not authorized. The threshold sits back 400′ from the runway’s edge (gee, I wonder why?).

On the opposite node, separated by almost 2500′, there is a lack of earth. Not far beyond that is Route 84. If you’re coming from the south, you won’t see the airport until after you pass the hill and spot 84. AVP approach was very helpful.

The water table is inches below the surface and hosts a very large but relatively shallow pond. If you like fishing, bring your rod. I can guarantee that there are fish, but don’t expect to actually catch a lot. The pond contains carp (big fish) but the most practical way of catching them is probably with a bow and arrow. I totally expect to try that sometime. Small bass and other panfish live there, too.

A moderate size pavillion is a great place to have lunch or wait out a thunderstorm. I saw horseshoe pits, but no horseshoes (or horses, but I did see a flock of turkeys). There is plenty of room to play catch or frisbee. Don’t try football unless you like being tackled onto exposed tree roots. Bring everything that you’ll need to satisfy yourself. There are absolutely no conveniences. That means drinking water or restrooms.

Other services do not exist either. Finding someone to help you will take a while. I had the displeasure of pushing 79V into a tiedown when the clouds got thick. Of course, the soil was soft and after my dad and I pushed it in the muck, we discovered that the ropes were too short. It took much longer to get her back out. All those horses under the cowl couldn’t even do the job. I finally got someone with a small tractor mower and a rope to pull 79V out. Searched out a better tiedown spot and tucked her in to wait out the weather. The best tiedown was the end of the row closest to the runway (for future reference). You may have to tie two ropes together to make them reach.

Even without other luxuries, fuel is available. The airport is staffed only on weekdays. If you plan to go, I’d take these numbers with you: (as listed in the AFD and airnav.com) 570-242-5771 and 570-689-4040. I assume that the airport carries minimal insurance for a public use area, because they’ll ask you to sign a waiver (if they see you).

If you’re looking for a real short trip to enjoy the outdoors for a little while, Spring Hill is an excellent place to go. Whether you want to relax alongside the pond, take a walk and picnic, or just wish to challenge your skills, you now have some knowledge to make your experience a good one.

Little fact for the day: the airport is run by a man who invented the radon detector. His equipment is so sensitive, that it calibrates the calibrators.

) trus lupa, what will happen? You know the answer. Atau ketika pilot hendak mendaratkan bawaannya (pesawat maksudnya), trus lupa menurunkan landing gear, apa yang terjadi? Ya, headline koran besok adalah pesawat mendarat tanpa roda. Atau ketika dokter melakukan operasi (misalkan organ dalam perut) lupa mengeluarkan salah satu alatnya. Akibatnya pasti Anda tahu.

2. Sikat gigi

Tips: Sikat gigi setiap Anda selesai makan.

A few days ago I wrote a post about the F-35 Lightning II is a fifth-generation, single-seat, single-engine, stealth multirole fighter, that will also equip the Aeronautica Militare (Italian Air Force, ItAF) and the Marina Militare, that will use the F-35B from the new Cavour STOVL aircraft carrier. In spite of a carrier variant designated F-35C, the RAF and Royal Navy will use the B variant from aircraft carriers and the U.S. Marines Corps are investigating the use of the Ship-borne Rolling and Vertical Landing (SRVL) method to operate F-35Bs from the aircraft carrier without disrupting carrier operations as the landing method uses the same pattern of approach as wire arrested landings. The F-35C carrier (whose only user will be the US Navy to replace the “legacy Hornets” and complement the Super Hornets) variant will be much similar to the A and B versions, but will have larger, folding wings and larger control surfaces for improved low-speed control. The aircraft will also be equipped with a stronger landing gear and hook for the stresses of carrier trap landings.

The following front, side and top views of the three variants will give an idea of the main differences among the F-35A, B and C.

Air France is the first European carrier to introduce the Airbus A380 double-decker Superjumbo in it

Air France is the first European carrier to introduce the Airbus A380 double-decker Superjumbo in its fleet, with the first scheduled commercial flight taking place between Paris Charles-de-Gaulle and New York JFK airports. Air France has 12 of the type on order and plans to take delivery of the first three in the 2009/2010 winter season. Their first plane is already the 20th of the type in operation and now all three airline alliances operate at least one of the type.

380 tickets for each of the first flights were auctioned off on e-Bay in October, where all proceeds went to charity organizations selected by Air France. The first European owned SuperJumbo seats 538 passengers – compared to just 450 at Qantas, 471 at Singapore Airlines and 489 at Emirates. The so-far most crowded A380 has only 9 seats in First Class, 80 in Business and 449 in Economy. 22 flight attendants will be taking care of the 538 passengers – meaning one steward(ess) for every 25 travellers. Besides being the first European airline to own the A380, Air France will also be the first to operate the aircraft to the African Continent as it plans to introduce the plane to a daily Johannesburg flight later this winter following the Paris-New York route.

At the launch ceremony Air France CEO Pierre-Henri Gourgeon did not only focus on the ”usual” media messaging around the unrivaled luxury of the A380 (as Singapore Airlines, Emirates and Qantas did earlier), but instead pointed out the savings that this aircraft will bring for the company. Each aircraft will allow the carrier to save €12-€15 million ($17.7-$22.1 million) per year based on their calculations. This is mostly due to the size of the plane and that it can replace two other flights, which could be serviced by an Airbus A340-300 (equivalent to the upper deck) and a Boeing 777-200 (equivalent to the main deck of the A380) for example. Flying the same number of passengers in just a single A380 instead means 20% reduction in operating costs as the frequencies on busy routes can be rationalized by replacing two flights which leave at similar times by one flight, while offering the same number of seats. For example, between Paris and New York, an A380 leaving at 1:35pm can replace two flights operated by an A340 and a 777-200, leaving at 10:30am and at 1:35pm respectively. The same connecting morning flights can still service and feed the “big” flight.

On top of all the rationalization of flights, the A380 uses less fuel per passenger. It burns less than three litres per 100 km! Besides the gas emmissions, the A380 creates less noise than its closest rival, the Boeing 747 – half as much at take-off! I had the personal experience of seeing and (not) hearing the A380 land in Frankfurt on one of its test-flights back in 2007 with Lufthansa crew – and we were all shocked by the little noise it generated compared to other aircraft landing on the same approach route before and after it. The Air France A380 is also quieter in the cabin itself, and besides the 220 windows it has special lighting features to reflect the time of the day within a flight and to help synchronizing the body-clock of the passengers. Guests can also meet up during the flight for a drink and a snack in one of the 6 bars onboard. One of these is for Première (First Class) on the main deck, two for Affaires (Business Class) on the upper deck and three for Voyageur (Economy Class), with two at the main deck and one upstairs.

We hope Air France and its passengers will be happy with the first new Airbus A380 flying under European registration and providing the first Transatlantic connection aboard the double-decker superjumbo between Europe and North America. Please leave your comments if you happened to be on one of these flights and would like to share your experiences with our readers!

Separately, but conincidentally at the same time as the first Air France A380 flight: Emirates said it will begin serving Paris Charles de Gaulle with a 489-seat A380 from Dubai on Dec. 29 rather than Feb. 1. “An operational review, coupled with demand on the route, has led to an earlier introduction,” it said. The A380 will fly thrice-weekly to start, becoming daily Jan. 17.

The year was 1919. The flight had all the earmarks of failure. The aeroplane was the first American designed and built medium bomber the Army Air Service had bought.

The durability of it airframe was unknown. The reliability of its 400 hp Packard Liberty motors was uncertain. The plans described the operation as a “test flight” and the planners themselves regarded it as totally hazardous venture with little chance of success.

Three officers and two master sergeants rode in unheated open pits without parachutes. They logged 9,823 miles, re-built the aeroplane in an open field after their one and only crash landing, demonstrated the potential of air travel to citizens of 46 cities and established the beginnings of formal air routes. Their efforts gave impetus to the development of aerial charts, aviation weather service, and many of the other tools of modern flying.

Using the actural log of the Flight, Seymour has created a day-by-day account of events that is a tribute to the men who built the aeroplane and its motors and the men of the Army Air service. It is a dramatic reminder that determination, courage, and ingenuity have always been bhasic values for the people of these United States.

He produces the best selling, non military helicopter in the world. He outsells all other North American manufacturers put together. He produces an aircraft which hold most world records in it weight class, including speed and altitude. He is Frank Robinson.

The youngest of four children, Frank Robinson was born in Washington State. Always interested in aviation, he worked his way through college and received his BSME degree from the University of Washington in 1957, with graduate work in aeronautical engineering at the University of Wichita.

Robinson began his aviation career in 1957 at Cessna Aircraft Company working on the CH-1 Skyhook. He then continued work with rotor aircraft at Umbaugh Aircraft Co., McCulloch Motor Company and Kaman Aircraft. During a brief stint at Bell Helicopter he earned a reputation as a “tail rotor expert.” In 1969, he moved to Hughes Helicopter Company, designing a new tail rotor for the Hughes 500 helicopter and working on the “quiet helicopter” program.

Robinson repeatedly tried to interest his employers in his own concept for a small, low-cost helicopter but to no avail, so Robinson resigned from Hughes in 1973 and founded Robinson Helicopter Company (RHC). RHC’s first business address was Robinson’s home where the two-seat R22 helicopter was designed. The first R22 prototype was built in a tin hangar at the Torrance Airport, and Robinson himself flew it on its first flight in August 1975 and the R22 received its FAA Type Certificate in 1979. The first production R22 was delivered in late 1979, and the R22 soon became the world’s top selling civil helicopter! The helicopter is so popular because it is relatively inexpensive and very reliable. In addition, the R22 holds most world records in its weight class including speed and altitude. The company also produces the very popular four seat R44. Close to 6,000 Robinson helos sit on flight lines around the world! In addition, Robinson oversaw development of the fuel injected R44 Raven II and the five place turbine driven R66.

Robinson is also very concerned about helicopter safety. He lobbied the FAA to quadruple the minimum number of hours of training needed to get an instructor’s license, as well as double the hours before a pilot could solo. In addition, he started a safety course that has become the gold standard of helicopter training, open to all pilots — today it has a five-month waiting list and is required by most helicopter insurers.

Robinson is an experienced helicopter pilot and flies the R22 and R44 helicopters regularly for personal and business purposes, including experimental test flying. He is a full member of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots and a Fellow of the American Helicopter Society. He has been presented numerous awards and honors, including the Howard Hughes Memorial Award, The Doolittle Award from the Society of Experimental Test Pilots and the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Washington. His philanthropic activities include donating large sums of money to the University of Washington and the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum.

For his invaluable contributions to aviation technology and his dedication to making helicopter flight more safe, the San Diego Air & Space Museum takes great pleasure inducting Frank Robinson into its International Aerospace Hall of Fame.

I enjoy writing on my first blog, (http://michaeljlockwood.wordpress.com) , but politics aren’t my only interest in life.

I must admit, that I’m a Flight Simulator freak. I fell in love with it in 2004. Less than 6 months later, I found Vatsim (http://www.vatsim.net). The flight sim experience changed for me.

Those of you who know about Vatsim are already familiar with the organization. Those of you who aren’t, let me put it into a nutshell.

Vatsim is a network that allows a flightsim fanatic to not only fly with others online, but to also play the role of an ATC (air traffic controller). To say this is an amazing sight would be doing Vatsim an extreme disservice.

The nice thing about Vatsim is the sheer level of professionalism. Real pilots and controllers join the network to make the network as real as humanly possible.

I got the idea to do this blog when I considered doing a prop flight around the world. I intend to visit all 50 states, including Hawaii if I can. I’ll also try to hit a few countries more than once while I’m there.

Needless to say this is going to be quite the journey. You’ll be right there in the right seat along with me. I’ll try to have guest pilots along the way, but I can’t promise anything right now.

Boyhood of Henry B. Joy.

Henry lived the first 28 years of his life two blocks from the Detroit post office “until I embarked on the sea of matrimony and removed to another part of the City.” His father James F. Joy, was president of the [Michigan Central] Railroad, with depot, office, and shops six blocks away from the family’s home. John F. Griffiths was Mr. Joy’s secretary. Young Henry liked to play with the telegraph in Griffiths’ office: “The result was chiefly a great deal of trouble, because I did not understand that I should leave the telegraph key closed after I had finished ‘operating.’” In the railroad’s shop “I was entranced with the big machine tools turning car axles and making big shavings of steel, on which, of course, I had promptly to burn my fingers.”

Charles Austin Fosdick, who wrote 'Frank in the Mountains' under the pen name of Harry Castlemon.

At age 11, with his brother, Fred, he went to the Wisconsin woods “to pay a visit at the home of my older brother, James Joy, who there had a farm, or rather a cranberry marsh.” Chicago papers arrived in the mail stating details of the Custer massacre. Rather than fight the Indians, they went back to Detroit and then went with his parents to Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. The boys had read “Frank in the Mountains” and “Frank on the Prairie.” In their Philadelphia hotel, Henry and Fred hunted Indians until guests complained and the management reached the boys’ “commanding officers [parents].”

It was “intensely hot” at the Exhibition, but Henry “was to fall in love” in one building: “There I met my fate.” A Corliss engine furnished power to the machinery hall. Over the next few days he sat on the platform by it. The engineer “let me touch the engine; he let me fill the oil cans; he let me go around with him as he oiled the vast machine. Yes, I may as well confess, I was enraptured.”

Back at home, Fred went to military school in Orchard Lake; Henry envied his uniform. He was allowed to enroll the next year and was put in charge of the drum corps. “In that drum corps I finished my musical education.”

He stayed at school over Thanksgiving and on Thanksgiving Day was skating on the lake when he fell through the ice. “I was really at the time quite interested in getting out.” He persisted and did hoist himself onto solid ice once again.

Naturally enough “the family had not been greatly pleased with my failure to come home Thanksgiving.” He did go home for Christmas. Santa gave him and Fred telegraph instruments. “We got a hold of some old wire, and while the family was absent, we proceeded to tack wires on the nice woodwork from one end of the house to the other, and set our telegraph company in operation. It was wonderful. It really worked. When mother returned, and we ran to her to show her what we had accomplished, we were disappointed at the effect of our skillful wiring work.” Later, after investigating at the Detroit Fire Department Telegraph Headquarters and the Western Union office, he figured out how to conceal the wiring, which he then surreptitiously installed throughout the house.

Easter was a repeat of Thanksgiving, and he stayed at school reading “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea” and “The Count of Monte Christo.”

After another year at military school, Henry transferred to the Patterson School, in Detroit, and “fell under the instruction of a woman, a splendid woman” named Miss Hosmer. Mathematics now became an “enjoyable pastime.” Unlike his father, whose library of 10,000 volumes included an “elaborate” collection of Latin and Greek volumes and perhaps more than 3000 in French, young Henry was less of a language scholar, although he still “got by successfully.”

1916 Packard

His father “was distinctly a home body,” devoted to his family and his books. His mother was “a saintly woman, and the best mother any man ever had, self-sacrificing, thoughtful, always planning for the happiness and comfort of those around her.” She also was “busy beyond words in attending to the charitable affairs with which she was connected in the City.”

Neither father nor mother ever spoke a cross word to each other. “It was a happy home of good cheer and good will and left an indelible impression on me which will endure with me to the end.”

With J.F. Joy in England—July, 1884

J.F. Joy was “vastly interested in keeping the Wabash as an entity and having it made tributary to his city of Detroit.” This would give Detroit “an entrance…for business to the great southwest.” The elder Joy “had become engaged in the effort to extricate the Wabash from the mire of financial complications into which it had been lead [sic] under the masterful guidance of Jay Gould.” The railroad’s health was also important to those Detroiters who were “engaged in the establishment of the new Union Depot gateway.”

Returning from Yale in June, Henry learned of his father’s plan to go to London. Having always found it “exceedingly entertaining” to follow his father on business, and relishing the opportunity to meet “very distinguished and prominent people,” Henry used “sincere effort” to go along. It was to be his first sea voyage and first visit abroad. Besides Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London, he was keen to “follow out some of the descriptions in Dickens.”

Cunard's 7700-ton 'Etruria,' of 1885

They sailed on the Cunard liner “Gallia.” She was “an iron vessel built in 1879, single screw, 4808 Tons, 430 ft. long, 443 ft. broad, 36 ft. deep, 5300 H.P., speed 15-1/2 knots.” Despite heavy seas, he “enjoyed the voyage to the fullest extent.” Other distinguished passengers included Robert Garret, president of the Baltimore & Ohio, and Chauncey M. Depew, of the New York Central and the Vanderbilt interests.

There proved to be but few diversions during the journey. “I, myself, being a moderate reader, thought the load of books I carried on board for my father to last him the ten or twelve days of the voyage would have lasted me, I estimated, approximately six months.” That is, if he had been able to read Latin, Greek, and French at the pace his father maintained. (Here, he reveals that his father, then 74 years old, had come to Detroit in 1836 and hung out his shingle as a lawyer.) There were some after-dinner conversations with Garrett and Depew. Of the latter, Henry thought that “a more interesting and entertaining man could never have lived in the world. His unending supply of stories and anecdotes kept the company entertained in the highest degree.” But Henry was later somewhat disabused of his high esteem when his father called Depew “Mr. Vanderbilt’s man Friday.”

Reaching port in Liverpool, they made their way to London, where they stayed at the Langham, reputed to be London’s best hotel. In comparison to the hotels of New York, Boston, or Chicago, Henry found it to be “dark, gloomy, forbidding, and unattractive throughout its interior.” The roast beef and mutton chops were good, though.

Chauncey M. Depew

Mr. Joy wouldn’t let “Harry” go along to his meetings, neither as porter nor errand boy. He carried his own satchel and left each day by himself. One morning Harry noted a newspaper ad for a Wabash shareholders’ meeting in a railway station auditorium. As it was a public meeting, he went on his own. About 300 shareholders had lost millions, and they engaged in “angry talk and anathematizing of American railroads, the American people and Jay Gould in particular.” Captain Francis Pavey conducted the meeting and introduced James F. Joy. The “tool of Jay Gould” withstood several minutes of derision from “the vexed multitude until they somewhat ran out of steampower.” The elder Joy mastered the crowd for more than an hour. “The situation altered like magic under the spell of his argument, heads nodding favorably here and there in the audience as he made point upon point; the approval gained and the confidence of the audience was won.” Another hour of Q&A followed, and then many from the audience stepped forth and shook Mr. Joy’s hand. Finally, young Harry presented himself.

“What? You here, Harry?” Mr. Joy said.

“Could I do anything for you, Father?” Harry asked.

“No,” his father said. “I’ll be back to the hotel in the afternoon.”

But Captain Pavey overheard all and acknowledged Harry. “I want to tell you that you should be proud. We’re going out to lunch and then down to my office for a meeting. Would you not come along?”

This time Harry “lost no time in assenting.”

It wasn’t the last time during the visit to London that he was invited along to meetings in Captain Pavey’s office.

Development of Aviation Interest in Detroit

Dictated by Henry B. Joy at the request of Harold H. Emmons, Detroit, Mich., December 3rd [no year given]

Joy Aviation Field, later to become Selfridge Field and elements tending to develop interest in Aviation locally

Joy began earnestly to study aviation and how Packard Motor could contribute to the service of the country “in case war should lead us into such difficulties as participation.” He had been increasingly interested in aviation since the Wright Brothers demonstrated flight at Fort Myer, in Washington, D.C. “I decided to drive towards an aviation motor in the Packard Experimental Department…”

Lieutenant Thomas Selfridge

As a testing ground for airplanes and for motor cars, he “canvassed the entire vicinity of Detroit to find a suitable location.” He bought up farmland without discussing the issue with the Packard board of directors, and he would simply hold the land as a real estate investment if they disapproved.

Two years into the war, the board decided not to pursue the testing ground, so “the land purchases which I had made were left in my ownership and possession.” Joy lived on the square mile in a tent, “spending as much time there as I could directly supervising the grading, going back and forth to the Packard factory each day over mud roads hub deep.” His interest was engaged because no such problem of drainage and reclamation had ever been attempted in the Detroit area.

When America entered the war on April 7, 1917, Joy was living in a frame house that he had built at the property. Much building of dikes, grading of ditches, and seeding of fields had been done at his own expense. The land was a foot lower than Lake St. Clair and really “was nothing but a ‘cat-tail’ swamp.” The federal government and Joy Realty Company worked out a three-year lease deal paying five percent on the calculated $195,000 price for land purchase and development. An option to buy was included. The road Joy had opened to Gratiot Avenue was paved with concrete by the State of Michigan and named Henry B. Joy Boulevard. A railroad was built on the property and buildings erected.

Joy Aviation Field became the first training center for military aviators.

“There is an interesting sideline in connection with my effort to develop an Aviation Field in the vicinity of Detroit as above outlined, which few people or practically none, know about or appreciate.”

The crash of the Wright Flyer that claimed the life of Lt. Selfridge.

“It illustrates the value of looking ahead and planning for possibilities in a doubtful future.” When Edward A. Deeds and Charles F. Kettering were visiting the Packard factory, Joy “induced [them] to take a little time off, and we went down to the [Detroit] river and got on my little power boat and took a run up to the Joy Aviation Field development.” They discussed the war and the possibilities of aviation. When Deeds and Kettering returned to Dayton they established their own field [today’s Wright-Patterson AFB?], “and when the war came on us and we were a participating nation, they gave their effort also to development of Aviation most unselfishly and liberally and with great and distinguished ability.”

Joy Field was renamed after Lieutenant Thomas Etholen Selfridge, whom Joy had seen killed on Sept. 17, 1908, in a crash with Orville Wright at Fort Myer.

After the war, the government did not exercise its option to buy at $195,000, so the property reverted to Joy’s control but the government continued to occupy it.

Whether Selfridge would become a permanent air base became “purely a political matter.”

“Finally the military authorities and the politicians in Washington decided to retain Selfridge Field, but instead of coming to me and discussing the matter, they instructed the District Attorney to institute condemnation proceedings and I was charged in public print with trying to get rich out of the Government and selling the property at twice its value, etc., etc.” An assessment process carried out by the D.A. showed the value between $400,000 and $500,000. So the authorities approached Joy about reinstating the option.

Joy agreed to this and the $195,000 was paid “in due time…after much silly negotiation and the matter was closed.”

He had felt that the base would be a benefit to Mt. Clemens, but ultimately he concluded otherwise because “the constant flying of planes all day long, daily, including Sunday, and the target practice which is incident to military training, causes so much disturbance in the contiguous area as to be decidedly detrimental to the upbuilding of a community anywhere within the vicinity of such a military aviation training field.”

BEECHER-JOY CONTROVERSY

(A matter too obscure for summary here, involving the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher’s contention that Republican Party presidential candidate James G. Blaine had solicited a bribe from James F. Joy.)

He is one of the most talented and famous aerobatic pilots the world has known Sean Tucker. Born in Eagle Rock, California Sean earned his pilots certificate at the very young age of 17 even though he had a fear of flying. He quickly realized the only way to conquer that fear was to attack it head on. So he took an aerobatics course…and soon was performing in air shows. Very quickly Tucker earned a reputation for being a highly gifted performer. Many of his maneuvers are original and have never been performed by another aerobatic pilot. Sean has flown in more than 425 air shows, in front of more than 80 million spectators!

Thirty years ago, Sean’s first aerobatic plane was a Pitt’s Special. Striving to push the edge more than the Pitts could deliver, Sean’s team designed the one of a kind Challenger II which produces more than 400 horsepower, weighs only 1,200 pounds, and is considered the most high-performance aerobatic aircraft in the world. Today, the Challenger II is one of the most recognizable small aircraft in the world. To endure the extreme physical demands of aerobatic display, Sean maintains a rigorous physical training schedule by working-out over 340 days per year in a routine of jogging and weight-lifting on alternating days.

Tucker has received numerous awards and recognitions celebrating his career in aviation. He has been named one of the Living Legends in Aviation, is the recipient of the Crystal Eagle Award, was an inductee at the 2001 USAF Gathering of Eagles, and was named one of the Living Legends of Flight. And in 2008 he was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame, joining such famous aviators as Jimmy Doolittle, Chuck Yeager and Bob Hoover.

Expanding on his love of flying, Tucker created the Tutima Academy of Aviation Safety, a world-class flight training institution dedicated to setting and spreading the standard for aviation safety in aerobatics and aviation at large. The Academy offers a variety of courses including stall/spin recognition and recovery training, aerobatic proficiency training, a low-level aerobatic mentorship program, and formation aerobatic flight training, which can be found no-where else in the world.

Tucker’s self-proclaimed goal is to “share the magic of flight with Team Oracle’s guests by inspiring and thrilling them. I want them to go away saying that the air show was one of the most engaging days of their lives.”

For his incredible enthusiasm for flying and his strong desire to pass this passion on to as many people as possible, the San Diego Air & Space Museum takes great pride in inducting Sean Tucker into its International Aerospace Hall of Fame.
