In case anybody was still wondering if Avid’s recent rebranding was a good idea, I recently at

In case anybody was still wondering if Avid’s recent rebranding was a good idea, I recently attended two industry events that helped prove that the company that brought us Media Composer twenty years ago is not going anywhere anytime soon. With a renewed sense of forward thinking and a commitment to actually listening to the users of their product, Avid’s recent releases of their 3.0 and 4.0 versions of Media Composer, along with a spiffy new series of hardware, helped prove to customers that there are still some advantages to throwing down a little extra cash to buy the editing toolset used by the majority of big-budget Hollywood productions.

The first event I attended (GenCre8 at The Echoplex on November 7) took me completely by surprise, as I was unaware it was an Avid-sponsored event until I arrived. Billed as a “secret performance by The Crystal Method” (the celebrated hard-edged electronic music duo whose music you’d probably recognize from various TV shows and car commercials), the event attracted a niche crowd of music enthusiasts from the Los Angeles area. Arriving at the event not fully sure how or why it was free (or even if I would make it inside), I was pleasantly surprised to see Avid banners draped everywhere upon entering and instantly recalled how Avid rebranded all of their subsidiary companies under the single name “Avid” last year to minimize confusion and unify their many divisions.

In addition to being a full-fledged electronic music performance, the event featured a 20-minute demonstration by the opening act (a rap duo called “The Chosen Few,” who were actually pretty talented) to promote Pro Tools and demonstrate how easy and fast it is to create beats using their software. While the spiel itself could have been streamlined a little bit (it seemed to drag on at times, partly because the guy working the computer was also simultaneously trying to describe how Pro Tools works), the entire event was a pretty savvy marketing maneuver. What better way to promote a product and establish brand identity than a demonstration to a captive audience who has already proven interest and dedication to electronic music just by showing up to a “secret” show? Not to mention the fact that attendees would have a positive association with the Avid brand regardless of the demonstration, simply due to the fact that The Crystal Method played an incredible set afterward. Very slick, Avid. I tip my hat to you.

The second event I attended was billed as an Avid event from the start. The LAFCPUG (Los Angeles Final Cut Pro User Group) spent an evening (November 18) discussing the differences between Avid Media Composer and Final Cut Pro and evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of each. Fellow editing bloggers Shane Ross and Steve Cohen each gave demonstrations on the new Media Composer 4.0’s ability to Mix-and-Match frame rates and resolutions in real-time, as well as the new AMA architecture and advancements in Trim Mode and Segment Mode. The highlight of the night, however, was the keynote address by Walter Murch, the undisputed “godfather of editing.” After spending the last 7 years using Final Cut Pro, Walter recently joined the film “The Wolfman” mid-stream when they were already firmly entrenched in an Avid workflow. Given his unique perspective having gone from Avid to Final Cut and back again, Walter was able to give candid insight into the technical advantages and disadvantages of each system. It was interesteing to note that while Walter praised some of Avid’s new features, when prodded by an audience member’s question, he responded that if given the choice, he would still cut his next feature on Final Cut.

Aside from being a great networking opportunity (I got to introduce myself to three of my favorite editing bloggers and shake hands with my idol), the event reinforced the notion that both platforms are moving in the right direction and that the rivalry between the two companies is good for the industry (competition = innovation and aggressively low pricing). As technology continues to advance and workflows move increasingly toward high definition, tapeless acquisition, and web-based delivery, it will be fascinating to see how Avid and Final Cut each adapt to the continuously changing landscape of the film and television industries.

We are often asked our opinion on Non-Linear Editing (NLE) software and which is the best, the answer simply is it depends on the job at hand and your level of experience on the software. We use a number of editing packages. Avid is a solid NLE software that can handle the smallest to the largest of projects. The learning curve for Avid is step, and courses can be expensive, but Avid is still the major player in the Broadcast/ Film world. (Final Cut Pro is becoming more prevalent, but systems in place in organisations such as the BBC and RTE will not be replaced overnight).

Well the stardom doesn’t end there. We’re back to introduce you to two more film experts.

Expert Judge, Yaz Takata

Yas Takata has an unexpected resume. Maybe it’s because he isn’t your typical film-guy. When one thinks about film, we relate it to the story it tells and the ride it takes us on. Yas’ films have managed to take viewers on rides, quite literally, in fact. Yas serves as the Director of Special Venue Film Entertainment for Blur Studio and heads its newly formed theme park and special venue film division.

Yas is one of the ride film industry’s most talented and experienced creatives. He is currently directing a stereoscopic dark ride for a new theme park located in Abu Dhabi, UAE, slated to open in 2010, and last year worked on Universal’s “The Simpson’s Ride” which was voted Best Attraction by the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA). Yas also co-directed Paramount and Nickelodeon’s “SpongeBob SquarePants in 3D,” which remains a blockbuster theme park attraction for Paramount Parks. Previous to that he directed the sci-fi hit venue film based on the popular tv-series, “StarGate 3000″ for MGM and was the lead creative on “Stan Lee’s 7th Portal 3D Simulation Experience,” yet another hit for Paramount Studios theme parks.

It appears Yas is driven by a desire for something more- something that tests limits and blurs boundaries. Yas spent 21 years in film, over a decade of which he acted as Director. Of these years in film, Yas has chosen to create films so bold they allow the audience to experience an aspect the world otherwise untouchable–unless of course, you are among our readers who seek extreme situations. Yas opens up the world for the rest of us, and for that we are incredibly grateful to have him on our expert panel of judges.

Yas grew up in San Francisco, earned a degree in communications from the University of California, Berkeley (go bears!) , and began his career with Midland Productions in nearby Richmond. While helping that company expand its business in commercial and corporate media production, he launched it into the nascent business of ride film production. He produced and directed ride films for Iwerks Entertainment, Imax, Busch Gardens, Busch Entertainment’s Sea World parks, and the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Among his credits is Wild Arctic, an attraction featured at Sea World parks. It takes park visitors on a “jet helicopter” ride through a frozen wonderland to come face-to-face with walruses, beluga whales and polar bears.

And as if that isn’t enough, Yas is also a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences.

Expert Judge, Todd Busch

Todd Busch is the man behind some incredible industry films. The kind of films most everyone has in their home and love to watch over and over again. He got his start doing post-production for infamous Lucas Films in 1990. When the Avid took feature editing by storm in the mid-90s, Todd road the wave of technology on a list of high profile projects, including Eraser, Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, Terminator 3 and Beowulf. He spent four years on the Editors Guild Board of Directors and has been a contributor to the guild’s magazine. Todd continues to work on the cutting edge of post-production and is currently working on Tony Scott’s action thriller Unstoppable.

Todd’s long list of accomplishments speaks to what an impressive individual he is. Just imagine this expert-editor watching your film and giving you the thumbs-up!

We’re expecting a great turn-out for this contest and are thrilled to have a panel of such impressive judges.

Stay tuned! We’ll continue to keep you updated on our Vado Film Contest!

The following entertainment article was written exclusively for Spreety TV Online by professional journalist Carolyn Giardina.

Trends to Watch: Spreety Asks Avid Technology

By Carolyn Giardina

Traditional TV and online TV are moving closer together, and it is not just about watching TV on a PC, observes the folks at publicly-traded Avid Technology, a leading developer video and audio production technology, as well as supporting infrastructure.

“Increasingly we are seeing TV’s with direct networking capabilities built in,” Bill Roberts, Avid’s market segment director, post production, tells Spreety. “The macro level trend is that as we move away from the requirement to distribute content over the air, more content will be ‘pulled’ over IP networks. For content owners who have had to rely on an indirect relationship with their audiences (relying on cable and broadcast), this can be a new and liberating way to distribute content without having to resort to a physical medium like a DVD.”

Roberts relates that he is tracking industry reports that suggest TV consumption is remaining consistent in the household, but it is being augmented by increased consumption via network and mobile devices.

With an increasing dependence on the Internet, the lines between gathering, structuring and distributing media are blurring. “News is a great example,” Roberts says. “Previously, broadcasters would gather, edit and distribute content once or twice a day. Today, a news story can begin with a series of viewer Tweets from an event, progress to still and moving images from ‘citizen journalists,’ become a news package and ultimately require substantial ‘context’ setting by anchors and professionals – all the while servicing integrated media distribution paths: the Web, TV, newspaper, radio, etc. The challenge here is that news used to be rundown centric and the other media were often subservient. With the online component in the mix, broadcasters have to be ready to distribute on any medium at any time. Avid, like our customers, is working to make the tasks of structuring and distributing content for any medium simple and deeply integrated.”

The use of HD camcorders is among the consumer trends that Avid is watching. Says Roberts: “With increased consumer capture of high quality video, we see an increasing need to structure that content. Also, as people experiment with basic tools there is a desire to improve the quality of their content. We view this as very encouraging as our goal is to provide a wide range of tools for consumers who wish to structure and share their content.”

He’s also watching the level of interest in stereoscopic 3D content. “Some of our broadcast customers globally are testing stereo to the home and with an increasing number of TV’s now supporting stereo display, we think this will be an important trend to watch.”

As a resource realist, I could probably be described as an advocate of the ‘quick and dirty’ approach to video. That’s because user-generated footage of a city-centre blaze, police clips of a scuffle with local hooligans, or a simple talking head interview shot by one of our reporters will generally deliver a good return for our effort.

>> Ghost Hunt – North East Aircraft Museum FULL VIDEO

I rarely encourage the production of complex packages which are often seen by just a few hundred users despite eating up a day of a reporter’s time. This trade-off is especially galling when the journalist’s written words or a photo slideshow would have been a more effective means of telling the story.

Sometimes the compelling subject of a video (such as our forthcoming series of first-hand accounts of the Second World War) or its longevity make going that extra mile worth it. We spent a little more time on our Halloween video than the hits we’ll get this year would justify, for instance. But it can now be rolled out every year without dating, along with our other Halloween specials.

We don’t claim the camera-work, voiceover or editing are world class, but the overall effect will hopefully be enjoyed by our visitors and enhance the Sunderland Echo brand online. Plus – yes – I enjoyed pulling the project together in Avid. And maybe that’s the best reason of all to spend time on your video output…

Pohl spricht über „Create with no limits! Will CGI take it all?“

Aber was solls.
