The nominations for the 2010 AVN Adult Movie Awards were announced and the winners in more than 100 different categories to be revealed live at the AVN Awards Show on Jan. 9, 2010, at Pearl Concert Theater inside the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

WHAT IS HIP RESURFACING SURGERY?
Let’s start by understanding the anatomy of the human hip.

The normal hip joint consists of a ball rotating inside a socket. The ball is called the head of the femur and the socket in the pelvis is called the acetabulum. It’s a technology that replaces the worn surfaces of the hip joint with caps of high carbide cobalt chrome.

Hip Resurfacing Surgery is a bone-conserving alternative to conventional Total Hip Replacement (THR). In a hip resurfacing, the head, neck and femur bone are preserved in an effort to facilitate future surgery should it be necessary and to enable the patient to take advantage of newer technology or treatments in the future.

Then the socket is inserted in a position to give stability to the hip, and allow the bone to grow around it. This encourages long-term security in the newly refinished hip joint. I spent the afternoon at the hospital today. My staples finally have come out, the x-ray of my hip looks good, and all other indicators point to a solid recovery. Dr. F was quite pleased with the way I’m doing at the moment (3 weeks post hip decompression surgery). I promised him that I’d make him some of my famous chewy gingersnaps when I see him in December. I find out if the surgery worked at that point (but I’m confident that it did). He mentioned that I’d be doubling over in pain had it not worked, and since that hasn’t happened, I know it worked. I feel incredibly optimistic about the outcome of my surgical experience this year.

Now all I need to wait for is my pelvic ultrasound to find out if my elongated periods are a result of fibrois. It’d be nice if they could solve every medical issue I have at once, but I guess December is just around the corner.

I got my wheelchair back on Friday and last night I finally had the opportunity to cook. I roasted radishes and yams. I know that a lot of people look at a beautiful bunch of radishes and wonder what to do with them, but roasting them takes away a bit of the bite and the strong, spicy aftertaste. Indulging in a roasted radish is alomst to biting into a flavorfully roasted potato, the only difference is that this is so much less work. A little salt, pepper, toss in a bit of extra virgin olive oil and throw the lot in the oven.

I think it’s safe to say that anyone who tries these beauties roasted will fall in love.

Roasted radish:

Pre-heat the oven to 450 F
half a bunch of radishes
salt and pepper to taste
olive oil to coat the radishes

Directions:

Be careful not to over roast because doing so will result in a very horribly bitter tasting radish. Gently combine the radish, salt, pepper, and olive oil in a mixing bowl. Once all the radishes are evenly coated transfer them to a baking dish (I used a cookie sheet). Bake at 450 F for 10 minutes and then reduce heat to 375 for the last 10 minutes. Allow radishes to cool in the oven, with the door slightly ajar.

This is what I call a punjabi clit. I chopped up some left over chicken from the night before and added pommegranite seeds, a bit of my special herb mixture and ta-da! I let the chicken and pommegranite get to know each other in the fridge for about an hour before continuing. I washed a lettuce leaf to act as the “skin” for my roll. I spooned in a heathy serving of the chicken and the rolled the leaf so it looked like a wrap/springroll. Try it… I think pommegranites are one of the most under rated fruits out there. They get a bad rap because they’re difficult to peal and enjoy, but seriously, look at it as opening a present on christmas morning and it’ll change the way you think about pommegranites.

More news about the upcoming Shimomura project Aliens Vs Ninja from the AFM. According to Screen Daily, Revolver Entertainment of the UK and M Pictures of Thailand have both secured the distribution rights to the film. Though this film was previously reported to be directed by Shimomura, it is actually directed by Chiba Seiji with action direction by Shimomura.

No word yet on a North American or other release, but I’ll keep everyone posted as info unfolds.

I don’t know what to call this post, so I’m titling it “?” The recovery is still the process, but I suppose that it will be until Dec. 14th (that’ll be the day I can put weight on my left leg). Meanwhile my right hip is very sore – it’s over-compensating for my other hip which isn’t in use. I’m happy to report that I’m no longer taking any kind of painkillers anymore. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt, I’ve just decided that they don’t really help that much so there’s no real point. Although, I must say, this experience has forced me to reflect and really take a long hard look inside myself. You’d think that I’d have already done that after 2008 – apparently not.

I’m discovering things about myself that I never realized before and above all else, I’m realizing that I’m quite happy being by myself with S. Just when I finally find happiness within again, I also discover all kinds of friends coming out of the woodwork. DW and I have started talking again. I shouldn’t have let AW alienate me from so many people I was once close to. AW had me completely convinced (because I didn’t go to the same school as them) that all of our friends weren’t too fond of me. How ironic that AW and I don’t speak anymore. She’s off  in England doing whatever it is that she’s doing and I’m reconnecting with people I thought I’d lost. Anyway, my point is this, DW is interested in moving in together as roommates. We both live quite far from downtown (where we’d both obviously be happier being) and we get along. Obviously we’ll both think about it for another little while and see what happens at the end of the year. If we’re both still interested we’re thinking sometime in the spring. That would mean I have a lot of stuff to get together before then, but you know what? I’m confident that I’ll be able to do it.

S is coming next week!!! I can’t believe we’ve gone so long without seeing each other. Shit happens, life goes on, but we’re both committed to the two of us and crossing the finish line. We’re both lucky in that sense – I feel like MS has taken a lot away from me, but it’s given me a lot too. I’m more sure now than ever that S is the one I want to build a life with. I’m excited to see him. I want to laugh with him, argue with him, make up with him and then do it all over again. I can’t say we do much arguing, but I definitely get on his nerves now and then.

The wheelchair company just phoned. The damage to my chair from the car accident isn’t too much!! It’ll cost me less than $150 dollars. I was afraid that it’d be a lot more because the car was written off by ICBC. My mother got a new car though, which is something I suppose. It’s a nice luxury car… different from the old civic we used to own.

News from the AFM has set off a flurry of blog posts all over the English-speaking film blogosphere. It appears that the Japanese distribution company Nikkatsu has decided to cash in on the American film market potential demonstrated by such distribution companies as Tokyo Shock and Tartan Extreme by starting their own distribution label, Sushi Typhoon. The label will specialize in “extreme gore” projects that will be simultaneously released in Japan (in theaters) and the US (on DVD).

Sushi Typhoon apparently already has film projects lined up from Nishimura Yoshihiro, Iguchi Noboru, Sono Sion, and Miike Takashi. However, they will lead off with Shimomura Yûji’s new film, Alien vs. Ninja. The film appears to be a period piece that pits ninja warriors from once-upon-a-time against blood-thirsty aliens from outer space.

There’s no word on Tak’s involvement in any of these ventures, but it’s not unreasonable to suppose that he may find himself bankrolled by Nikkatsu’s Sushi Typhoon label at some point in the future. At any rate, another funding option for the “extreme gore” market is a good thing no matter how you slice it. (No pun intended.)

I’m out… finally. It felt like forever, although I know it was less than a week. I went in on Wednesday morning and came home on Monday night. I can’t say that this surgery was “easier” than my first on the 21st, but I can say that I’m catching up on a lot of missed sleep. I had a hip decompression on the left side because Dr. F found the AVN before it did any real damage. I’m forever indebted to him for that. I can’t begin to verbalize what these surgeries mean to me or the freedom they’ll give me. I’ll have recovered completely by Dec. 9th. I haven’t decided how I’m going to celebrate but I will find something to do.

S will be here in two weeks!! I’m really excited to see him, it’s been far too long since we last saw each other. I’m getting goosebumps just thinking of his trip up here… I’m looking forward to spending time with him and laughing with him.

There is a lot of information in the media about swine flu.  To the point of overwhelming.  Although not expressly untrue, many facts are lacking and worst of all, the information is presented grossly out of context. Presenting facts selectively, and using a loaded message to produce an emotional rather than rational response spells propaganda.

Wolf-Dieter Ludwig, chairman of the German Medical Association’s drug commission, stated: “The health authorities have succumbed to a campaign by the pharma companies, which simply want to earn money from a supposed threat.”

While Mr Obama seems to think that emergency rules will make it easier to handle anticipated surge in patients.  Yes, after all that fear mongering, people are lining up for the jab.  As a result, the swine flu panic is sweeping the world.

Unfortunately, the biggest casualty of this corporate driven, politically supported, media-manufactured hysteria is – common sense.

Having sold billions of dollars worth of anti-flu drugs to the governments around the world, it’s clear the swine flu pandemic has been good news for the pharmaceuticals industry.

But, did you also know that Baxter, the US pharmaceutical giant, had been accused of fraud amid allegations that it had overpriced medicines by as much as 1300%(?)  As a result, the company reached at least seven huge settlements over the past 12 months, some for millions of dollars.

Despite the scandal, Baxter is one of two companies awarded the contract to produce 132 million doses of vaccine for Britain alone.

At this point, I’m tempted to step on my soap-box – How can we trust such abominably unethical organization with our health(?) – but I’ll refrain and stay with the facts.  My intention for this blog was always to pull the facts together to help paint a broader context. You draw your own conclusions.

FACT: Swine flu has a death rate of about 0.5%, that makes it slightly more dangerous than seasonal flu.

At the moment, the World Health Organisation (WHO) still describes swine flu as a ‘moderate’ illness, saying that most people recover without the need for hospitalisation or medical care.

FACT:  Antiviral drugs cannot cure flu.

At present there’s no good-quality research in people about how well antiviral drugs work against swine flu. All the randomised controlled trials look at how well they work against normal, seasonal flu.  And at best, the laboratory tests show that this type of flu virus (not specifically H1N1) is sensitive to two types of antiviral medicine:  oseltamivir (TAMIFLU®)) and zanamivir (RELENZA®)).

The last big summary of the research was published in 2007. It looked at three studies of children with seasonal flu treated with these antiviral drugs. The summary showed that antiviral drugs reduced the amount of time children had flu symptoms, by between 10 and 36 hours.  Reduced by about ONE day!?

Admittedly, studies also showed both these medicines reduce the chances of getting flu from a close contact (for example someone you work with), as well as relieving some of the symptoms and reducing your chances of getting complications from normal flu, such as pneumonia or bronchitis.

Although the summary was not funded by drug companies, most of the original studies they included were.

NB: Tamiflu is banned in Japan.

FACT: Taking anti-flu medicines will not stop the spread of swine flu.

You will probably still be infectious while taking antiviral medicines. So really, you need to take good hygiene measures, such as regularly washing your hands.

If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better. Two types of antivirals, TAMIFLU® and RELENZA® may be effective against the H1N1 flu.  But there are known issues with both, severe enough for Japan to ban Tamiflu.

FACT: The clinical trials are inconclusive given the time, certainly not sufficient to justify vaccination of millions of people.

Many doctors and health organizations are concerned about the safety of the swine flu vaccines.

It appears the alleged cure is potentially more dangerous than the disease and ethical medical practitioners are expressing their concerns all around the world.

GlaxoSmithKline, major manufacturer of Pandemrix vaccine, confirmed that a single dose could provide a strong immune response.  However, trials are ongoing.

Wolfgang Wodarg, a doctor and a member of the Bundestag, told the BMJ that governments have created a lot of unnecessary panic. He thinks the World Health Organization “carries a lot of the burden for this.”

Should the governments have agreed to carry legal risk in the event of lawsuits by patients experiencing any negative side effects from the vaccine?

FACT:  The evidence of this strain of the flu virus circulating in pigs in many of the originally infected and pandemic declared countries is sketchy.

The lack of similarity between the 2009 A(H1N1) virus and its nearest relatives indicates this is a new type of virus, not derived from a seasonal flu virus, or any other previously identified virus, rather it appears to be a hybrid.

Although swine flu viruses are usually of the H1N1 sub-type* and nonhuman in origin, human swine flu has some elements of a virus found in pigs.  Influenza A viruses are found in many different animals, including ducks, chickens, pigs, whales, horses and seals.  This strain is called swine flu because it is thought to have originated in pigs – a lot of conjecture involved here. The origin of the latest disease outbreak in Mexico is still under investigation.

NOTE: Sub-type means derived.  Natural mutation requires time, so derived how, in a lab?

FACT: A vaccine can only be developed when the specific strain has been identified, and then it takes several months to do so.

Strangely, the report in ‘Science’ (the World Leading Journal of Original Scientific Research), claiming the swine flu outbreak did originate in pigs, was published May 22nd 2009.  Barely a month after the first known case was reported.

Another few months later, and we have the vaccines, Pandemrix, the H1N1 vaccine produced by GlaxoSmithKline;  And, Celvapan, Baxter’s adjuvant-free H1N1 vaccine (absence of adjuvants means fewer “side”-effects), reserved for top government officials and military (hrmm…?).

Extremely fast work.

FACT:  As advised by the WHO, eating well-cooked pork does not pose a risk.

After the initial news broke out, the media were warned not to refer to the outbreak by its common name, swine flu, but to use N1H1, to curtail alarming drops in pork sales.

All I can say is, glad I’m a vegetarian.

FACT:  Under the AHMPPI, immunisation would normally mark the beginning of the next phase, or ‘control’.

However, given the moderate nature of pandemic (H1N1) 2009, and the desirability of continuing current measures under the ‘protect’ phase, a change to the ‘control’ phase will not occur ie. In Australia, vaccination is not being legislatively mandated.

FACT: In the UK, GPs will be handed £4000 bonuses as well as receive £5.25 for each jab (£10.50 per patient), however the shot will be free to patients – read: Gov’t subsidised.

Is this bribery(?)

FACT: Since April 2009, the swine flu outbreak has effected 100 countries.  WHO’s decision to raise the pandemic alert level to Phase 6 is a reflection of the spread of the virus, not the severity of illness caused by the virus.

In their own words, “Rapid reporting of human infections with novel influenza A viruses will facilitate prompt detection and characterization of influenza A viruses and accelerate the implementation of effective public health responses.”

So, why is the WHO no longer updating its figures? Now it looks like the US CDC might have decided to abandon the facts as well.  Makes no sense – The pattern the spread of a disease makes, is a direct guide to the strategy for dealing with it(?)

Stay informed.  Don’t take anything for granted just because someone ‘credible’ says so.  Pull as many facts that are available together into a picture that makes sense for you. Draw a conclusion of your own.

So I’m having my other hip done tomorrow. I found out at about 11 this morning that Dr. F wants to save my femural head by putting pins in which should give the artery between the femur and the pelvis enough room to allow blood flow. I’m hopeful for tomorrow, a bit nervous but hopeful. I’ll be in the hospital for approximately a week…

I’m not sure what’s going to happen with physio for my other side because there’s no weight bearing on my hip that’s going to be done tomorrow.
