I’m not referring to the movie, Back to the Future, about a plutonium-powered DeLorean time machine

I’m not referring to the movie, Back to the Future, about a plutonium-powered DeLorean time machine that finds Marty McFly (played by Michael J. Fox) traveling back in time. Rather, I am shining the light on the uncanny ability of media outlets (specifically magazines) to mark key turning points in financial markets – both market bottoms and market tops. This will be the first in a three part series, providing a few examples of how magazines have captured critical periods of maximum fear (buying opportunities) and greed (selling signals).

People tend to have short memories, especially when it comes to the emotional rollercoaster ride we call the stock market. Thanks to globalization, the internet, and the 24/7 news cycle, we are bombarded with some fear factor to worry about every day. Although I might forget what I had for breakfast, I have been a student of financial market history and have experienced enough cycles to realize as Mark Twain famously stated, “History never repeats itself, but it often rhymes” (read previous market history article). In that vein, let us take a look at a few covers from the 1970s:

Newsweek’s “The Big Bad Bear” issue came out on September 9, 1974 when the collapse of the so-called “Nifty Fifty” (the concentrated set of glamour stocks or “Blue Chips”) was in full swing. This group of stocks, like Avon, McDonalds, Polaroid, Xerox, IBM and Disney, were considered “one-decision” stocks investors could buy and hold forever. Unfortunately, numerous of these hefty priced stocks (many above a 50 P/E) came crashing down about 90% during the1973-74 period.

Why the glum sentiment? Here are a few reasons:

Exiting Vietnam War

Undergoing a Recession

9% Unemployment

Arab Oil Embargo

Watergate: Presidential Resignation

Franklin National Failure

A cartoon from the same bearish 1974 cover article.

Not a rosy backdrop, but was this scary and horrific phase the ideal time to sell, as the magazine cover may imply? No, actually this was a shockingly excellent time to purchase equities. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, priced at 627 when the magazine was released, is now trading around 10,247…not too shabby a return considering the situation looked pretty darn bleak at the time.

Reports of the Market’s Death Greatly Exaggerated

Sticking with the Mark Twain theme, the reports of the market’s demise was greatly exaggerated too – much the same way we experienced the overstated reaction to the financial crisis early in 2009. BusinessWeek’s August 13, 1979 magazine captured the essence of the bearish mood in the article titled, “The Death of Equities.” This article came out, of course, about 18 months before a multi-decade upward explosion in prices that ended in the “Dot-com” crash of 2000. In the late 1970s, inflation reached double digit levels; gold and oil had more than doubled in price; Paul Volcker became the Federal Reserve Chairman and put on the economic brakes via a tough, anti-inflationary interest rate program; and President Jimmy Carter was dealing with an Iranian Revolution that led to the capture of 63 U.S. hostages. Like other bear market crashes in our history, this period also served as a tremendous time to buy stocks. As you can see from the chart above, the Dow was at 833 at the time of the magazine printing – in the year 2000, the Dow peaked at over 14,000.

The walk down memory lane is not over yet. Conveniently, the Back to the Future story was designed as a trilogy (just like my three-part magazine review), so stay tuned for “Part II” – coming soon to your future.

Fuente: BBC. El estrés produce “cambios” en los genes

In the 2004 film Alien vs. Predator, the characters from two successful science fiction franchises face-off similarly as in the even worse film, Freddy vs. Jason. The concept of Alien vs. Predator was born out of the comic book series Aliens versus Predator from Dark Horse comics. About eight minutes into the movie, what seems to be Mesoamerican pyramid is found 2,000 ft. below the ice of the Antarctica island of Bouvetøya. This is where the majority of the movie is set. There are a lot of phony looking statues of Predators, artwork and hieroglyphics depicting Predators and Predators fighting Aliens that serve as the backdrop for a pretty weak story. It is revealed later that the pyramid was constructed by the Predators for the purpose of incubating the Alien race in humans to create the ultimate prey (the Aliens) for the Predators to hunt. Apparently, these ancient humans worshiped the Predators as gods who taught them how to construct the pyramids and being chosen for incubation was a great honor. It is also implied that the Predators have used their small personal nuclear bombs in the past to leave no trace of their activities if the Aliens get too close to escaping from the prison-like Predator pyramids.

Many of the ideas of Erich von Däniken are present in the story according to the creators of the comic book. The handling of these borrowed ideas is almost as ridiculous as the actual concepts of ancient astronaut theory. First, the physical evidence depicted in the film does not represent anything even close to anything found at Mesoamerican pyramids in reality. There are no extraterrestrial inspired hieroglyphics, artwork or remains of any Predator or Alien creatures at Mesoamerican sites. The writers of the movie hang a lantern by having a character mention the mini-nuke option to contain an outbreak… and the evidence. That’s why none of the above has or will ever be found. The Antarctic pyramid is thought to be the last and only place that can still serve its original function. There is never an explanation of how Antarctica is related to Central or South America other than the mention that the continent has not always been covered by ice.

This movie is a disappointing vehicle for two classic sci-fi monsters and an even worse treatment of ancient astronaut theory. There is little evidence mentioned to support that the Predators in this case have ever been involved with the ancient civilizations of Mesoamerica. The film itself did more harm than good for the theory, maybe causing some to think that the components of ancient astronaut theory are as silly as the unholy Predalien combination creature that appears at the end of the movie to hint at the 2007 sequel Alien vs. Predator: Requiem.

We raken in gesprek over wijn.

Na de aftrap mogen de heren ‘ROXANNE, you don’t have to put on the red light’ galmt door de ruimte.

Only slightly Halloweeny, the Geiger-style aliens from the amazing film franchise are awesome enough to blog about anyway. We’ve got a ton of Sideshow statues and figures both new and old that feature the original aliens from the first films and the new ones from the Aliens versus Predator franchise. Whatever you think of the films, there’s no denying that the folks at Sideshow have outdone themselves in terms of quality and detail with these figures.

There are also non-Sideshow items brought to you instead by McFarlane and Kotobukiya, which can be found in the AvP section of CmdStore.com. There you’ll find everything from 6-inch figures to Head-knockers and more! Sure to please any fan of the films or their now-classic aesthetic.

And now, in other alien-related news, there’s a new movie coming out that looks like it’s going to be absolutely terrifying. Titled ‘The Fourth Kind’, it’s a creepy tale of alien abduction unlike any other entry to the genre thus far.

Watch the Gametrailers video here.

I am definitely catching the bug. Apparently, the previous PC games had/have a huge following, so it is entirely possible that this game really will “Let’s ROCK!”

UPDATE: I finally got to watch it. Play through the game as Aliens, Predators, or Humans; 18 player Multi-player (one assumes 6v6v6); and “a full player co-op survival mode”. I have a letter out to Play Asia regarding an “Asian” version. As soon as I can confirm J360 compatibility of any version, I will be ordering it.

Done deal.

UPDATE 2: Play Asia has no more information than what is posted on the site. I remain hopeful, and expecting Kenny to buy it as well, or that he should consider our friendship cheap. …Seriously. ;)

UPDATE 3: Over at Evil Avatar, someone responded to the “survival co-op”. The co-op is not for the story, but for different maps? perhaps. Anyway, it is not what I was thinking. I think you are correct Kenny. I think there is no co-op, at least not in the Gears/Halo sense. === DOH! I just noticed your comment! Yes. You are right.

There are a number of ways to rank brand values. One of the most important is the level at which a brand contributes to the market value of a public company.

24/7 Wall St. asked Corebrand, the brand research and consulting firm, to look at the top 100 brands based their contribution to market capitalizaton. Using this method, the hardest working brand was Hershey (NYSE:HSY), followed by Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO) and Harley-Davidson (NYSE:HOG)

Corebrand described the process briefly to 24/7 Wall. St.

24/7 Wall St.: Corebard often refers to the brands on this list as the”hardest working brands”. How did you come to that description?

Corebrand: There are a lot of people measuring and examining the “strongest brands” or the “most valuable brands”. Our opinion is that examining one without the other is somewhat meaningless. How “strong” a brand is nice to know but not very relevant unless you understand how that strength benefits business. Similarly, “value” is little more than a measure of corporate size unless you understand the drivers of that value and how to influence it. By examining the strength of the brand and it’s contribution to total market value, we can help companies and their leadership manage that strength and value over time.

24/7 Wall St.: Is there any advantage or disadvantage to having a brand value be a very large percentage of market cap in the present and as an indication of a company’s future performance?

Corebrand: The brand will need to be in balance with the rest of the company’s assets. A company should strive to have it’s brand strong enough to fend off competitors or changing market conditions but not so strong that it becomes overly dependent on the brand as a single driver of value. If a company can achieve and maintain its appropriate maximum strength without becoming over-dependent, it will see greater returns in bull markets and retain greater value in bear markets.

Methodology: CoreBrand tracks 800 of the world’s best corporate brands and maintains the largest continuous brand benchmark tracking system.

Each year, on a rolling basis, CoreBrand conducts 8,000 telephone interviews among business leaders to measure their perceptions of some of the world’s best corporate brands. Respondents are business decision-makers from the top 20% of U.S. businesses.

This senior business audience (VP level and above) represents the investment community, potential business partners, and business customers across 49 key industries. 400 respondents rate each company per year; 800 companies are measured each year. Our reports are updated on a quarterly basis to reflect any subtle changes.

CoreBrand collects financial performance data and communications investment information to understand the support behind and impact of these brands. These corporate brand strength ratings, as well as a company’s financial data are used in CoreBrand’s statistical model to determine the percentage of market capitalization that is directly derived from the corporate brand. Once that percentage is calculated, a dollar value is assigned to the corporate brand.

The percentage of market capitalization, attributable to the corporate brand. The percentage is then translated into a dollar value, based on the current market capitalization. The analysis is examined over time, to determine if the corporate brand is a growing or declining asset.

Though it will most certainly be lacking the absolute necessity for teamwork (at least as the Predators or Aliens), if AvP is anything at all like L4D, I am going to struggle not to pre-order it, let alone buy it. And if Gearbox follows through with Aliens, wow. Just wow!
