Plot – Warring alien and predator races descend on a small town, where unsuspecting residents must band together for any chance of survival.

Review – I thought the first AVP movie was ok, it didnt have the same suspense that the other alien films had which is what made them soo good. It felt also very “lets just show these guys fighting”, and also it didnt have the best of actors. Even with these flaws i still went out and got it on DVD, as I liked to see these guys on screen.

I recently got AVP2 cheap on DVD, I missed this in the cinema and just like the first I heard it wasnt great. The film for me is a blend of Aliens, Predator, Predator 2 and Freddy vs Jason…which is why its just an ok film. It is a lot better than the first but again, it still doesnt have the suspense and creepy feelings that made these original films classics.

Overall its ok, it could have been a lot better and the ending..eh..ok…

A new Conan The Barbarian movie has been in the works since what seems like forever. It was originally supposed to be King Conan: Crown Of Iron, a third movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, but then he became Governor of California and plans fell through. Since then, producers have the oh-so-trendy reboot in mind, and are planning to resurrect the fantasy franchise in 2010.

Now the question is, who will direct? The Wachowski siblings (Speed Racer), Brett Ratner (the Rush Hour trilogy), Robert Rodriguez (Grindhouse), Wachowski protégé James McTeigue (V For Vendetta), Neil Marshall (Doomsday), Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later), the Brothers Strause (Alien Vs Predator: Requiem) and duo Mark Neveldine & Brian Taylor (Crank) are reportedly all in the running. Who will it be? Who would you like it to be? Discuss!

Personally, I just hope they’ll set this movie in the same continuity as the forthcoming Red Sonja reboot produced by Rodriguez, starring girlfriend Rose McGowan (Grindhouse) and directed by protégé Douglas Aarniokoski (Highlander: Endgame). Conan, Red Sonja and Kull are all part of the same universe created by pulp writer Robert E. Howard.

It’s the Hybrid Alien / Predator taken from the movie. The action figurine is about 6″ high and it’s looking at me everyday in office. I love action figures (aka NOT toys) hehehe. Just love the detail and the ‘attitude’ of this figurine. Keeps me focus in office. Good for breaks when not staring at the computer the whole day. Nice? Niceeee….

AVPR: Aliens vs Predator – Requiem (2007)

“This Christmas there will be no peace on Earth.”

Ki a rendező: A Strause-testvérek, Colin és Greg. A két rendező testvérpár elsősorban mesteri vizuális effektjeikről híresek. Fiatalok még, korán kezdték a vizuális trükkök készítését.

Első munkahelyük Chicago-ban volt, ahol az X-Akták film trükkjeiért feleltek, majd később mikor renoméjuk emelkedett, létrehozták saját társaságukat, a Hydraulx-ot, melynek égisze alatt olyan filmek speciális effektjei kerültek ki mint az X-Men 3, az Æon Flux, a Terminátor 3, a Holnapután (Greg BAFTA-díjat is kapott érte), a Fantasztikus Négyes 2 vagy a 300.

Emellett a fiúk betörtek a zene világába is, és számos előadónak rendeztek videoklippeket (U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Aerosmith, Linkin Park, Nickelback), illetve olyan márkáknak készítettek reklámfilmeket mint a Nike, a Toyota vagy a Sony.

Ki játszik benne: Elég sok kevésbé ismert színész, többek között Steven Pasquale, akit talán a Ments meg! című amerikai tévéfilmsorozatból ismerhet a néző; John Ortiz, akit nemrég a Miami Vice című filmben láthattunk Jamie Foxx és Colin Farrell oldalán; vagy Reiko Aylesworth, akit a 24 című kultsorozatból ismerhetünk mint Michelle Dessler.

Mi a sztori: A filmtörténet két legfélelmetesebb és legkultikusabb szörnye ismét összecsap, hogy bebizonyítsák, nem ismernek sem félelmet, sem kíméletet, és ami vagy akik az útjukba állnak, azok bizony csúnyán megbánják. Találkozhattunk már velük űrhajón és idegen bolygón (Alien-kvadrológia), a Földön mint egyszemélyes vadásszal (Predator), és már láthattuk őket együtt is, egymás ellen harcolva a vásznon. Az első részhez hasonlóan ismét a Föld a két rivális újabb vadászterülete, és az emberek – gyakorlatilag közéjük állva – pusztán az áldozat szerepét töltik be a két lény kűzdelmében.

A nagy összecsapásra ezúttal egy colorádói kisvároskában kerül sor. Egyik főhősünk Dallas (Steven Pasquale) egy volt elítélt éppen a szabadság édes illatát érzően visszatér gyökereihez és testvéréhez Ricky-hez (Johnny Lewis), azonban a városka idilli hangulatát felváltja az egyre több megmagyarázhatalan haláleset, így Dallas a helyi seriff Morales (John Ortiz) segítségével szembe száll egy kisebb csapat élén a támadók ellen.

Az első rész végén megismert Csatahajóról egy kisebb űrkomp leválik, majd lezuhan, és mélyéből az elszaporodott arctámadók egyre több embert vesznek uralmuk alá, hogy a belőlük kikelt Alienek fokozatosan redukálják le az emberi populációt és kíméletlenűl pusztítsanak és szaporodjanak, addig amíg ők nem lesznek az uralkodó faj – élükön a Predatorból kikelt Alien-szimbiózissal, a PredAliennel!

Azonban a Predatorok is tudomást vesznek a történtekről, és egyik legjobb harcosuk felszerelkezve indul neki a kozmosz sötétjén át a Földre, hogy mint vadász vendettát vegyen meghalt bajtársaiért. Több millárd ember, egy városka maroknyi túlélője, egyre több Alien, és egyetlen Predator. A helyszín a Föld – az igazi, totális harc csak most kezdődik!

Értékelés: Nagyon vártam már ezt a folytatást, és már itt az elején azt kell mondjam, hogy nagyon pozitívan csalódtam benne! Persze tisztában vagyok vele, hogy a filmet elég rendesen lehúzták, és sok neves oldal is mérhetetlenül alulértékelte és sok negatív kritikával támadta. Nos én nem tartozom közéjük, szerintem igenis méltó folytatása lett az első résznek (amivel szintén meg voltam elégedve), gyakorlatilag túlnőve rajta, sokkal dinamikusabb és látványosabb is lett.

Anoche fui con mi novia a ver esta película, realmente tenía muchas expectativas luego de ver el trailer, y no quedaron isatisfechas. Arranca exactamente donde termina la anterior y la supera minuto a minuto, mas violencia, buen ritmo, una duración de poco mas de hora y media y el surgimiento de un nuevo “heroe”, hacen de este film un buen ejemplo del cine como puro y buen entretenimiento.

Si la vieron espero sus post, si no veanla.

И за всички интересуващи се “Requiem” ['rekwiem] означава 1. n лат. реквием (и муз.), заупокойна служба, панихида; 2. прен. погребална песен. Аз се спирам на “погребална песен” ма за това след малко, първо на бързо да ви разкажа защо съм толкоз възмУтен

Никога няма да забравя първият път когато гледах оригиналният Alien (1979) Трябва да съм бил малък, защото го гледах по канал едно (иначе филма е излязъл горе долу 5 години преди да се родя) и брах много страх… Не за друго ма филма си е страшен. Помните ли онзи момент в който космонавта се приближава към яицето, камерата минава в първо лице, накланя се над него, яйцето се разтваря и… класика, незабравим филм

Филм който е на почти 30 години, и който е ужасно добър дори ако си го пусна точно сега през 2008 година. Истински хорър, а не като новите бози BTW филма е под номер 51 в топ 250 на imdb
После имаме:
Aliens (1986) – Top 250: #69 на imdb
Alien³ (1992) – филма в който Sigourney Weaver си обръсна главата
и разбира се Alien: Resurrection (1997)
Аз лично не се сещам за друга поредица, която може да се похвали с 4 (четири!) чудовищно добри филма Еталон за скай-фай хорър

От другата страна имаме:
Predator (1987) – Един филм в който бате ви Arnold Schwarzenegger мачка както винаги, но и един филм който ни представи едни нови нагли и самонадеяни хищници. Безмилостни ловци, за който земята е планета пълна с неща който могат да убият и закачат на стената в летящата си чиния
Predator 2 (1990) – или какво става когато Хищникът дойде в големият град.
В общи линии, скай-фай екшъни! от старата школа

И понеже това не е достатъчно имаме няколко игри от поредицата Alien vs Predator излезли за различни платформи, като задължителните за споменаване са:
Aliens versus Predator излезъл за PC и MAC през 1999 г. и безспорно една от най-страшните игри евър!
Aliens versus Predator 2 – 2001 г и експанжъна Primal Hunt (2002). Все игри който ще останат в златната история на PC гейминга.

Ако някой не е разбрал, фенщината ми и към двете поредици е огромна, а за игрите вообще няма да отварям дума
Точно за това когато през 2004 г. в кината излезе AVP: Alien vs. Predator, филм базиран на сблъсъка между Пришълци и хищници, но този път на родната ни планета аз бях първа писта в киното.
Whoever wins… We lose. Дето бяха казали
За съжаление след като филмчето свърши, аз имах чувството че съм гледал просто някакъв трейлър на филм (беше безумно къс BTW), и като цяло не бях особено впечатлен. Просто като го поставиш до което и да е от заглавията за който говорихме преди малко, и изглежда слабичко

После дойде това:

Нямаше как, отново първа писта в киното… само че след този филм не мисля че ще се излъжа отново, и евентуалната 3-та част ще си я гледам в къщи. Има тъпи филми, има и безумно тъпи филми… има и Aliens vs Predator – Requiem (AVPR).
Щеше ми се да мога да напиша нещо хубаво за филма, но не мога.
Най-остро впечатление прави гениалният начин по-който е снимано всичко. Помните ли първия Aliens vs Predator… може да не беше граунд брейкинг, но поне като елиъна се биеше с предатора виждахме какво се случва, за разлика от това тук. Още в началото на финалните надписи с големи букви има изписани имената на “братята Strause” който се явяват режисьори на филма, и очевидно много се гордеят с постигнатото. Бързата справка в IMDB показа че става въпрос за Colin и Greg Strause, който определено имат богат опит със спец ефектите (като почнеш с “Титаник” и стигнеш до “След утрешният ден”, “300″ и други такива), но не и със снимането на филми. Реално това е първата им голяма продукция. Преди това имаме Nickelback: The Videos; Download It: Behind the Scenes Video; Mute и 16mm Mystery все смазващо големи заглавия Та някак си на тези двамата са им дали да режисират AVPR, и резултата е повече от неприятен. В общи линии в 90% от битките който ще наблюдавате в филма по-скоро ще се опитвате да разберете какво се случва, и кой с кого се бие вместо да се кефите. Отдавна не бях гледал толкова хаотично и некадърно заснет филм. Ок разбирам че всеки трябва да се упражнява някъде, ама защо трябваше да опропастят точно тази поредица, по-толкова малоумен начин. Но реално това не трябва да ви притеснява, защото сценария е под-всякаква критика. Писача е Shane Salerno но наистина ще се опитам да се въздържа от коментар за скрипта, щото иначе ще трябва да обидя човека жестоко.
Все пак, за да знаете за какво иде реч – един коръб с хищници си фърчи насам натам, и пичовете нещо си експериментират с елиънчета. Единия бива заразен, излюпва се елиънче, стрелят се нещо, кораба крашва на земята, елиъните налазват населението, а някъв мега хишник идва да оправя мазалото (сам). Не че съм очаквал твърде гениален сценарии, ма… то т’ва на нищо не прилича. Все едно Spy и аз сме го мислили. Разликата обаче е че ако ние го бяхме мислили, кукичката за следващият епизод (ако не фалират след тоя филм) нямаше да е толкова зле. Просто връзката за бъдещите филми беше толкова тъпа, че думите са излишни. Ако направите грешката да го изгледате ще разберете. Начи да обобщим до тук, какво е положението:
1. Сценарият е малоумен – а да, връзка с предишния филм разбира се няма;
2. Снимано е като от хора, който за пръв път виждат камера;

Продължаваме нататък с актьорският състав – като цяло тотално неизвестен. Почти всичките актьори са се подвизавали основно в разни сериалчета, като за най-известен актьор в каста мога да посоча Reiko Aylesworth , която играеше Michelle Dessler (жената на Тони Алмейда в 24), ма сигурно защото само нея успях да разпозная Не че е нужно каста да е някъв хипер, мега ултра звезден, ама тука положението беше тежко… то е очевидно че никой много уважаващ себе си актьор няма да се навие да участва в това ма бива ли така. Някак си цялото нещо ми лъха на евтиния. Мързи ме да търся колко е бил бюджета, ма се фащам на бас че първия филм е имал доста по-голям. Та значи:
3. Актьорите.

Не стигат всичките тия глупости ами в филма ставаме свидетели на цели 2 (две) нови неща:
1. Няколко нови оръжия и тулове за хишника – който са си ок;
2. Единият от елиъните, можеше директно да “изнасилва” жените. Да се чете, налапва им главите и снася нещо директно в коремите им, и от там се излюпват елиънчета… Аве тия нормални ли са ве! Елиъните не могат да правят такива неща. Колко филма и игри има по-въпроса, и такова нещо ПРОСТО НЯМА! Трябва да си се излюпи грабърче от яице, да се лепне на лицето на някой за да “снесе” вътре в него. После малкото елиънче (прилича на змия) разкъсва гърдите на приемника и отива да си търси храна. След като се нахрани започва да расте. Съответно елиъните варират според това дали “приемника” е бил човек или хишник. Никъде няма, елиън който да “снася” директно и по-колкото си иска в хората. Питайте Giger да ви каже. Гигер ако не знае някой е “таткото” на елиъните. Той е психопата, измислил външният им вид. Имаме майки, който снасят яица и елиини, който ловят хора и ги “лепят” по-стените за да може грабърчетата да си намерят храна като излезът. А не “изнасилващи” извънземни. Тъпа работа… Извинявайте, ако съм ви отегчил, ма не може така…

На всичкото отгоре някой много хитър е решил че ако треснат една мацка по-бански в филма, ще си дигнат реитинга… Верно мацката беше симпатична, ама това не е няква забутана тинеиджърска драма, а уж е Скай-фай, екшън, хорър. Мъкаааааа.

Забавно беше и да се наблюдава жалкият опит на авторите да превърнат героинята на Reiko Aylesworth – Kelly в еквивалент на Ripley от оригиналният Елиън. Това го казвам щото Kelly през целия филм се мота по-потник, нагло откраднат от гардероба на оригиналният филм. Още по смешното е че другият главен герой се казва Dallas, точно като Dallas от Alien. Очевидна липса на оригиналност от страна на авторите.
Казах че няма да говоря за скрипта, ма все пак – диалозите са просто феноменално тъпи. Пример: Някой забелязва че момиченцето е “леко разтреперено”, след като някакво извънземно е убило баща и, и ги е преследвало из града а майката казва: ”Не и беше лесно тази вечер” ДА БЕ ВЕРНО ЛИ, кой ви пише скрипта! Кошмарът е пълен.

Най-интересното ми занимание бе да броя колко човека бяха убити пред камера. За заинтересованите аз преброих точно 24 (преди големия взрив) тия зад кадър не се броят. А най-забавното… надписа върху билета за киното:

Още се мъча да разбера какво точно означава АЖП 2:
Абсолютно Жепейска Пародия 2;
Елиън Жабешка Простотия 2;
Абсолютно Жестоко Прецакване 2 или нещо друго но някой мистерии ще останат неразгадани. Все пак, ако имате идея пишете.

Та ботом лайн – Първия AVP не беше баш това което очаквах, но имаше свежи моменти. Втория AVP е като първия, ама даунгрейднат. По-всички параметри. Разбирай – махнато е всичко забавно, и са добавени много тъпи работи. Просто е срамно че потенциала на една две толкова страхотни (и страховити) поредици са опропастени по толкова чудовищен начин. Моят съвет е ако го гледате, в никакъв случай не го правете на кино. Не заслужава 7 лева!
За мен това беше един истински Aliens vs Predator – Requiem да се чете като “Погребална песен за Aliens vs Predator поредицата”

Искрено съжалявам само за младежите който си бяха довели приятелките на прожекцията. Тия са прецакани от всякъде:
1. Дали са поне 14 лева (7 за билет за нея, и 7 за него. Пуканките не ги бройм);
2. Мацката е полудяла по-време на филма, и сега ще му мрънка цяла вечер;
3. Младежа поне до края на месеца ще трябва да се извинява, и да се подложи на многократното изглеждане на филма – Барби и лешникотрошачката да речем.
Така е момци, другия път мислете повече.

Може да ви е смешно, ама колко момичета имаше който се караха на приятелите си докато напускахме кино салона, бедна ви е фантазията. Може би единственият по-лош вариант, е да сте завели приятелката си на тоя филм и да сте я излъгали че е романтична комедия.

Още веднъж, моят съвет – стойте далеч от тая боза!

Ich war eben mit Freunden in AVPR oder auch Alien vs. Predator Requiem.

Naja, was soll ich sagen, Requiem passt meiner Meinung nach sehr gut. Dieser Film stellt für mich die Beerdigung der genialen Idee von Alien und Predator dar. Ich habe wirklich schon lange kein so schlechten Film gesehen.

Die Story ist dermaßen vorhersehbar, die Charaktere so was von überhaupt nicht gezeichnet und wenn dann klischeehaft, dass keinerlei Spannung aufkommt. Das hat zur Folge, dass es ziemlich egal war, wenn mal wieder einer der “Hauptdarsteller” abnippeln musste (um wenigstens etwas Action aufkommen zu lassen). Auch die üblichen Schockeffekt, bei denen man zusammenzuckt, hat mir vollkommen gefehlt. Vielleicht dachten die Macher, dass ja das Abmetzeln von Schwangeren in der heutigen Zeit einen besseren Kick gibt.

Aber vielleicht bin ich auch einfach zu alt oder zu abgebrüht, keine Ahnung. Meine Mit-Cineasten fanden den Film nämlich gar nicht so schlecht.

ALIEN VS PREDATOR REQUIEM (2007)

This film was directed by The Brothers Strause (Colin & Greg). It isn’t a very good movie, but the moviegoer’s attention seems to become more focused toward the end, where the action picks up. As contemporary films go, this movie is relatively tame. There is a “pretty young thing” (Jesse, played by Kristen Hager) who strips to a bikiniesque attire at one point. That is IT in regard to playing the sex card. There are a few scenes of a gorey sort, which won’t shock anyone who has seen an ALIEN flick or a PREDATOR flick before.

The movie is a “B” grade type. It seems to be a throwback to the ’50s science fiction movies (some of which had characteristics which immortalized them, such as INVASION OF THE THE BODY SNATCHERS). Since some Japanese filmmakers were inspired, apparently, by those American Bs, the moviegoer, not surprisingly, also notes a kinship in AVPR with such curious Japanese films as GODZILLA VS MOTHRA and KING KONG VS GODZILLA( English titles). As a matter of fact, the film credits at the end of this film are a resounding homage to those ’50s sci-fi flicks.

Hence, although the film wasn’t too impressive, per se, there were enjoyable aspects, which for older moviegoers and “old film nuts” provided a pleasant recognition and remembrance.

The film stars: Steven Pasquale (“Dallas”), Reiko Aylesworth (“Kelly”), John Ortiz (“Morales”), John Lewis (“Ricky”), Ariel Gade (“Molly”), Robert Joy (“Col. Stevens”), and a cast of many. I’m not familiar with any of them, but I don’t get around like I used to. Maybe they are famous.

The storyline: Two varieties of creatures from outer space are lurking in the vicinity of Earth, and clearly, one of them has the upper hand over the other. As a matter of fact the dominant creature(s) seems to be treating the other as both prisoners and “guinea pigs,” and the victims don’t like it one bit. You could say these two sets of creatures hate one another. As fate decreed, the oppressed were able to break free momentarily, and a battle on board the orbiting spacecraft results in a crash landing on Earth. It appears the oppressor creatures(Predators) all died, leaving the remnant of the other (Aliens) free to “lick their wounds.” However, the Predator civilization in outer space is aware that something went “bad wrong.” A Predator puts on his mask, loads up on Predator firepower & ammo, gets into a small space vehicle and heads to Earth. This appears to be a mission of revenge, and the moviegoer infers that there will be no prisoners. Meanwhile, an adult Earthling and son are in the woods of Colorado, hunting deer. Guess who the first dispensable actors in the film will be? Yet, hardly had the Aliens (who seem to be both nasty and fecund) done their thing, then here comes the Predator (traveling solo) to “rain on their parade.”  Incidentally, it rains a lot in this locale. The primary issue to speculate about is whether this Predator has brought along enough ammo to kill the rapidly increasing Alien population. He does stop by the wreakage to check on the now deceased Predator, noted at the outset, finding also the deceased Predator’s weapons & ammo to add to his own. After this, it is a run-and-gun tussle between Predator pursuer and multiplying Aliens in and about “Gunnison County, CO.” Meanwhile, the wife of the deer hunter & son is concerned and goes to the law in these parts, Morales. He organizes a search party. About this time “local hood,” Dallas shows up. He is an old pal of Morales, prior to Morales’ going “tin horn.” Morales offers to help him get a job. By means of a camera cut, the moviegoer is introduced to Dallas’ bro, Ricky, who is a deliverer for “Pizza One.” By means of him Jesse and her clique are introduced. It’s beginning to look a lot like a “teen flick” at this point, and the viewer half expects “Jason” or “Michael” to jump out. Or perhaps a cut to the highschool. No, this serves up the film’s initial brewing romance, as it is clear that Jesse has eyes for Ricky. Verbal potshots between Ricky and the clique’s males leads to a “stomping of Ricky” whose car keys are tossed in a sewer grate. Another camera cut introduces U.S. Army soldier Kelly who is coming home either because duty is done or R&R. At any rate she has a husband (good Dad, bad fate) and daughter waiting in a nice home. As the realization of external troubles due to horrendous creatures from who-knows-where attacking any human they encounter, the people are drawn together, dropping their minor issues. Calls by Morales to the military results in a Col. Stevens reassuring them. He advises them to head for the center of town and await rescue. This piece of advice is questioned by Kelly, and there is an admirably cordial separation of the remnant into two groups. The Morales-led group go to the appointed rendezvous spot, while Kelly, driving an armored personnel vehicle, leads her group, including Dallas & Ricky, to the hospital where they hope to find escape via a helicopter. At this point in time there is a battle royal going on between the Predator and the Aliens, and many humans still about are also falling prey. Meanwhile, it is apparent the gloomy Col. Stevens has sent a jet fighter-bomber toward Gunnison County’s main town, Crested Butte. As luck would have it, the Predator finally has used all his ammo and hightech weapons but must face a formidable Alien still. Folks, it’s ugly mouth time. Those who were led by Kelly, indeed, found a helicopter. Those who were led by Morales “waited for Godot” and never felt a thing. Col. Stevens has sent the Morales group to “ground zero.” The jet is carrying at least two nuclear weapons, and the bomb bay-doors open. That’s correct. At last in film the military gets to nuke the enemy (the “contaminated” part of Colorado). There’s the mushroom cloud! There is the shock wave! And there’s Kelly! She is “riding the wave” just ahead of disaster. Well, this is the sort of thing that might just bond an Army-tough, single mom and the reformed town hood. But in outer space, nuking kinfolk might not sit well.

I didn’t think that Reiko Aylesworth (Kelly) showed much acting ability but is definitely better as an action actor. John Ortiz was not impressive either. Steven Pasquale was adequate as an “intense” character. Kristen Hager was cute but, since everyone she interacted with was pedestrian, she tended to “reduce to the mean.” Perhaps the best actor in the film was the father who was killed off near the film opening.

Parenthetically, I thought that the Predator was presented as a smarter creature than the Aliens. However, although the Aliens bear a resemblance to Earth reptiles, blended with wet-looking armadillas, neither of which are notably inteligent, these creatures must come from a civilization that is at least crafty hitchhikers. Still, they are treated as little better than dangerous vermin by the Predator, who definitely comes from a hightech civilization. So, why does he skin humans? I don’t know. Why do some humans skin a chicken  before cooking and eating it? It’s a matter of taste, I suppose. One way or another, both Aliens and Predators seem to have humans on the menu.

The end of the film’s ugly-mouth, to-the-death tussle between Predator and Alien somewhat reminded of the dragon tussle at the end of DREAMCATCHER. The associations one connects to in viewing this film are more interesting than the film itself.

Gather ’round the fire kids and let me tell you about the space jamaicans versus the bugs and how they went on to produce the possibly worst series of movies ever known by man.

now, i’m not going to tarantino this, so we’ll start at the beginning and set the scene.

my father, god bless his soul, got the great idea that it would be a sweet family activity to see a movie all together, so far so good right? How about if that movie was Alien Versus Predator Requiem. Oh yeah, needless to say Hel and I were not amused.

we went in with no expectations and somehow both of us were still disappointed! Instead of me leaving you hanging like that though, let me fill you in on how such a great achievement is possible:

• Killing not one but TWO pregnant women, one of whom’s uterus explodes with baby aliens while she’s in labor.
• Facehuggers…modeled painstakingly in 3D.
• More blood than in most small town blood-banks
• Carcasses that have been skinned alive, only they don’t cut away while the guys are getting skinned
• Pregnant women die gruesomely. PREGNANT WOMEN.
• when the facehuggers pop out of a chest, they actually move and wiggle…i liked it when they were like alien penises
• Dead babies.
• oh, and just to piss you off the hot blonde love interest gets skewered right at the end WITH NO NUDE SCENE..AAAAAUGH!

Pretty much one of the highlights was sitting in the theatre with Hel and my little brother calling out who dies and survives waaay before it happened. Mystery Science Theater 3k would be proud. So yes there was some kind of story about a spaceship crashing in colorado involving some sort of crappy love subplot, but oh wait, she dies and there’s some sort of flirting going on between the obligatory soldier-women character and the badass maing guy character man but lo, none of that was ever developed in lieu of more gore…and dying pregnant women.

sigh.

so yes. this gets a negative twenty-six on a scale of zero to ten for movies, so that means my recent roll over vehicle crash was more fun by a factor of about six. really though if you ask me it needs more gore. it just wasn’t gory enough.

in case you didn’t get the point that the movie is absolute and total crap, the trailer is after the cut.

Some things running around:

The Rocky’s Lynn Bartels put in a sob story about poor, picked on Marilyn Musgrave. It’s all the mean attack ads that were run in 2006 that led to her garnering only 46% of the vote in CO-04. Riiiight. Supporting a U.S. constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage and introducing legislation to ban abortion had nothing to do with that. Funny – neither manage to crack the top 10 in voter concerns, even those of Republicans. Anyone want to guess who had more 527 ads run on them in 2006: Marilyn or Angie Paccione? If you can’t take the heat Marilyn, don’t help dish it out. She’s the same politician, folks. She’s just trying to sing a different tune now that she’s in the minority.

King George has taken the next step in changing our country’s government. Apparently, he can “pocket veto” without pocket vetoing. Or something. Congress, if you plan on letting him get away with this nonsense, please don’t go back to work in 2008. The rolling over dog act isn’t getting anything done for the people. Kagro X raises some good questions. I think his last question is a little off, however. I’d rather have it asked, “How much more can the Americans people and our brand of democracy take?”

Heh. This would be interesting.

I have a slightly different take on this situation. How about ‘If you’re willing to do it to your mother, it’s not torture’? Although starting out with yourself would be a decent beginning. Seriously, I cannot for the life of me understand why we’re debating whether it’s torture or not. When it starts happening to American soldiers and citizens, don’t act all surprised, ‘kay?

Sweeny Todd is pretty good. AVPR not so much.

The shuttle Atlantis may not fly in January. Dang it. NASA needs to get the ISS constructed before the fleet is retired. Thought I’ve thought since the 2010 retirement announcement that they’ll likely extend their lifetimes.

So I went to see AVP:R on Christmas Day. I’ll say right off the bat that it was a horrid, idiotic and offensive piece of entertainment, but something else needs to be pointed out first. Today I read with incredulity the NYT review of the movie, which (while nodding knowingly at the film’s cheesiness) felt that “it’s a perfectly respectable next step in the series.” Really? AVP:R is a piece of trash, and it tarnishes my memories of actually good movies, and this is why.

First, the best actors  in the film are from “24″ and “Rescue Me.” The Rescue Me looks and acts in the least genuine manner I’ve seen in a while: like a porn-star. The “24″ woman (she played Michelle)? She could be good, but the movie goes out of its way to turn her into nothing, to insult her womanhood (and thus her capability as an action character) with regularity. Their characters are written stupidly, as if they were idiots, idiots who watch movies even worse than AVP:R. The movie flagrantly, obviously borrows entire scenes, line of dialogue, camera shots, musical cues from its predecessors. If you remember the original Aliens and Predator movies, you’ll be feeling some serious deja vu. Sadly, the filmmakers didn’t realize that strip-mining old franchises is not the same as attaining their quality. I only kind of like Alien (well, I just love Aliens a lot more), and Predator bores me. Still, the fact that they have stolen these parts just makes the movie’s shortcoming’s more apparent.

As the film ends, watching Reiko Aylseworth telling a scared little girl that there “are no more monsters” makes one wince, because they obviously thought that they were being respectful. Unfortunately, the tone of the original scene and the relationship between Ripley and Newt made this line work. Here, it’s a means to an end, patching in one more old line of dialogue. Watching this movie was like watching the three new Star Wars movies. You realize instantly that this is not a plotted narrative, an interesting story to be enjoyed. It is an exercise in connecting the dots. The filmmakers look at what happens in the original movies (Darth Vader Kills Obi-Wan, Weyland-Utani loves alien technology), and then they take the stupidest, most obvious route to get the prequel up to speed. One scene (at about the halfway point) where the little girl says there’s a monster outside, and her mom tells her there isn’t, is such an obvious way of plugging in the setup for the aforementioned ending sequence.

What else to say… All of the people of color die, in totally throwaway fashion. The sheriff, John Ortiz’s character, is perpetually lost, and unsure of himself, and eventually makes a decision that costs hi his life and the lives of others. Fantastic. They try to make the main woman (Aylseworth) smart and tough like Ripley, but their clunky, fumbling attempts at their peculiar visions of “strong women” only reveal how little they actually want to create a powerful female character of any variety. It doesn’t help that they have a super-sexy pool make-out scene. This scene consists of the blonde hot girl who the Porn-star’s (Rescue Me guy) younger brother is into taking off her pants and shirt. At this point, there is about a 2 minute butt shot. Then, when she puts her clothes back on (because they get caught), the camera gets caught too. On her butt. For another thirty seconds. Then she gets murdered in a totally offhand way by a Predator, because she is weak and feminine, unlike her comrades. But the army woman is strong (even though characters actively question her strength throughout). So, Feminism!

Finally, let us discuss the continuation of the always bizarre Aliens birth/vaginal metaphors. In the original movies, the concept of having an alien burst out of you was horrifying. The scene in Aliens where Ripley dreams that it is about to happen to her is truly frightening, as are all other scenes of such “births,” but they never clog the screen: this is a horrible occurrence, to be contemplated and feared, not lingered over and savored. In AVP:R, the filmmakers took a slightly different route. And by slightly different, I mean they create scenes of such a gratuitous, offensive nature, they made me want to stop watching. In the first scene of the movie, we watch a face-hugger implant a 7 year-old, and then watch the alien hatch. Which let me tell you, really challenged my comfort zone and made me reconsider how I thought about violence! Toward the end of the movie, we are treated to an even more disgusting scene.

In the hospital, we are introduced to the new method of alien implantation. The new alien breed (Predator/Alien or Predalion) forces eggs down multiple pregnant womens’ mouths, and we see the eggs move down their throats. Of course, since they are all pregnant, they can’t get up and run, and must each be helplessly assaulted. Starting off with this exploitative, rape-like forced fellatio, the camera has more to show us. We then witness the “birth” of multiple aliens, all from screaming, helpless women in hospital beds. The way in which the camera lingers on this scene is both surprising (the movie never hints it’s going to become this cheap) and offensive. When other humans arrive on the scene, the nude bodies with holes in their chests are panned over slowly by the camera. I’m not sure what the makers of this movie wanted. I think they probably thought that they were “upping the ante” from the original movies, in some kind of new, edgy, sexy way. Because nothing says sexy like raped women and nude corpses.

There are so many more things wrong with this movie, I wish I could write a lot more. But I’m hungry and food is ready. So, don’t go see this movie, see Aliens again, or watch Juno. Happy Holidays.
