Denver Nugget power forward/center Chris “Birdman” Andersen is one of the more interesting players in the NBA, not much of a wallflower, Andersen loves attracting attention. Whether it is for his many tattoos, often bizarre hairstyles or for suspensions for drug abuse, Andersen likes the spotlight. I think it’s fair to say that his new ride is sure to attract attention around Denver; after all, it’s hard to be inconspicuous when you’re  rolling around in a giant, highly modified SportChassis P4XL with 22.5″ rims, custom Italian leather interior, suede headliner and a giant chrome grille.

Ok. So I realize that I kind of bummed out on my 30 days thing. *shame* I’ve been pretty busy lately and I kind of lost all motivation to do this after I stopped running. Weird, right? I should probably start running again. :-\

I just thought this quote was quite awesome. In the west, especially the United States, I think that we view body art – especially tattooing and piercing – as a sign of individuality and freedom, but we don’t really consider the part of conformity. Marines as well as other branches of the army get tattoos as signs of devotion, prestige, and honor. In other cultures, some get piercings, body art, or change their hair as initiation into that particular culture.

I think that it’s just amazing that body art can cover such a vast array of aspects in every culture. Makeup, clothing, hairstyles, piercings, tattoos, henna, almost everything can be considered body art.

Let’s face it, the Pixies and their fans are getting old. The fans clearly have enough money to drink too many expensive venue beers before the show and the band takes themselves less seriously. Too many snippets of aged drunken hilarity to express here, but it is sufficient to say that my fellow show goers made me feel young and sober by comparison. Their youth has waned but their taste in music has not and the band they waited so many years to see, perhaps again, perhaps for the first time, delivered the goods to a wanting audience. The music and the energy it creates has done anything but wane. It shocked my adult self into my teenage consciousnesses and the sweet marriage was one rarely achieved in a lifetime.

Now, I’m not one of the “10% of people who can say the actually saw this band before,” so I guess the fact that I’ve listened to them since Surfer Rosa was released wasn’t enough to make me cool in the eyes of that 10%. But that night, at that show, I wasn’t thinking about my concert resume and I’m relatively sure the band didn’t care that this was my first time. Frankly, it was nice to be a virgin again for the Pixies, open and somewhat apprehensive, knowing what it was supposed to sound like and ultimately pleasantly surprised at how good it turned out to actually be.

They made mistakes on a couple of songs and it was endearing. It had obviously been long enough since this group had repetitively banged out these tunes that it didn’t sound like the millionth time moneymaker tour even though it may have been. It sounded like they were trying to do what they once did with what they now had, maturity and a visible sense of humour that I can only speculate was lacking in previous decades. They rocked every song. Plain and simple. Rocked. It was incredible. I couldn’t stop grinning from ear to ear long enough to even sing along. Yes, it was that good.

On a more visceral note, someone barfed directly in front of us before the show started leaving a nice area where no one would stand. It was the most fortunate vomit event in my personal history and allowed for the rare visual display of the band from far away. I could actually see the entire show and, yes, what was awesome got even better. Thanks be to puke.

After the show someone said to me, “try to describe that with your fancy words,” knowing it would have an entry in my fledgling and humble unread music blog. So, there ya go. Not much of a detailed review, but it’s the best I could do without losing the feeling in the details. Because isn’t music really about how it makes you feel?

Even though we here at Zaftig Chicks aren’t your stereotypical “Fat Acceptance” site, we do talk about it and deal with it on a regular basis.  For me, “Fat Acceptance” is me accepting and loving what I see in the mirror and in pictures and in person. 

But what about the inside?  Sure, there’s that old saying, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks”, but can you?

So here’s the question:

Which part would you choose if you could choose to improve one aspect of your personality?

My answer?  It’s hard to come up with only one!  I need to think on it, but we want to hear from you.  So, do tell!

I had a pretty good weekend (despite the Arsenal loss) which was on the Sunday anyhow so my Saturday was completely unspoiled. Long and lazy… perfect .

Saturday I woke up pretty effing early for a Saturday. But I still had
Supernatural Season 2 to finish. This took quite a while, and since I bought the real dvds from Amazon (no pirating for me, no sir) I had the extras to watch afterwards.  So after watching five episodes, I then watched the  commentary of the antepenultimate episode (check me out, didn’t even look that up ) and the gag reel which made me like Sam a little bit more. Although he’s still kind of a whiny bitch.

All this time I had the Report of Death to do for work hanging over my head. In fact it’s still there now tapping my head every so often, yet here I am writing about the very weekend that caused non-completion of the report. Although the typing makes it look like I’m working really hard hehe.

Anyway, I’d been invited to go bowling and laser tag, or Q-Zar as its apparently called here; pronounced Quizar. I was totally thinking of not going because of the report of death and the rain. I’m like those witches in the Wizard of Oz hehe —>

Also I was feeling super-lazy. But eventually I got my lazy self up and running helped along by headbanging to So What by Pink and other poppy-pretend rock songs hehe and braved the weather in the name of Carpe Dieming.

Suffice to say, bowling and laser-tag was awesome!! I totally felt like Barney Stinson, except kids in real life are much better than those lame-ass kids on HIMYM and they kicked my ass. I got shot 13 times!! But I shot people 18 times so hey. I was trying to shoot those evil kids but they really were just too good. Next time… I was also wearing white, clearly a rookie mistake. Next time I’m wearing all black and putting them football player black marks on my face.

Bowling was also pretty cool; my first time and I started out quite well. Spare first round and nine pins in the second. But ALAS! It was all just beginners luck, and I went on in the next few rounds to get 5, 4, 1 and even 2 misses – when you dont hit any pins. I don’t know how I didn’t come last haha. Thanks to the Nokia 2600 with the bowling game (think its that one anyway), I knew all the bowling rules and terminology though… haha

Still I’m gonna practice though, I HATE LOSING!! GRRRR.

Sunday was more of the same, started watching Supernatural again from Season 1 (again) because my internet sucks and  trying to stream anything with that connection should be one of Dante’s Ten Circles of Hell. Managed to watch one episode of Community though, its pretty funny. Actually worked on the Report of Death,before my internet crashed and burned… Slept.

And now its Monday and here I am writing about the weekend. Which is really kind of meta… Wait until tomorrow when I write about today where I wrote about the weekend… SUPER-META!!

My grandfather apparently went to the most awesome yardsale of all time, his haul from which included a five dollar antique sewing machine and the following little treat:

The box says that they are garnish/vegetable cutters in the shape of a star, a heart, an airplane, a clover, and a chicken. I’m thinking garnishes made of chocolate are more up my alley than carrots, but who knows? Aren’t they the cutest things ever?

NOTE: This post includes spoilers.  In the off chance that you aren’t one of the nine babillion people who read the books or saw the movie, I thought I’d, you know, warn you.

NOTE 2: You can read each sentence of the above note in at least two ways.

Wow.  Cool title graphics.  That moon is cool—and it turns black.  As it should.  I’m glad the producers remembered that the new moon is the moon when we can’t see it (unlike almost all of the postermakers/advertisers).  Maybe these moviemakers have sense I wasn’t expecting.

Opening sequence.  That girl from the tabloids in an open field.  She’s calling herself Grandma.  There’s a mirror.  I get it—she’s scared to get old when her boyfriend is a “seventeen”-year-old hottie.  I don’t think she needs to worry.  From the tabloids, her boyfriend is partying pretty hard; he’s going to look old soon too.

Wait.  There’s the surprisingly buff guy everyone’s been talking about—the Native guy who worked out so much they couldn’t dismiss his ripped abs from the cast.  What’s the deal with his nasty long-haired wig?  I hope it goes away soon.  That could really get in the way of my appreciation of these historic abs.

Oh—there are other vampires?  Besides the perfect one everyone’s been blogging about for years?  How do I know if a person is a vampire?  Wait, I get it.  The vampires are the well dressed ones with the sophisticated/overly manicured coifs.  If that main girl becomes a vampire, will she dress better too?

Whoa!  Enter the shirtless men.  And how.  I think, yes—I just saw it.  The main girl paused in the middle of a sentence, distracted by the buffness of the shirtless man (boy?) in front of her.  How old is he supposed to be again?  And why does Hollywood think it’s okay for grown women to ogle him?

The wig is gone! Thank goodness.

And WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH THE JEAN SHORTS?  Someone somewhere in Forks is making bank on jean shorts.

Where’s Edward?  So much hype about him and her and his perfectness—and all I’ve seen him do is throw her across the room and into a table.  Oh, and say a couple indescribably vacuous statements about his love for her.  Really?  This is what men worry women want men to say to them?

Maybe I should leave the movie.  Is something interesting supposed to be happening?

Or maybe this movie would be better with more Edward.  And fewer moments of that girl intentionally doing stupid things.

Wait.  I take that back.  Now Edward is back—but he’s the one doing stupid things.  I get it, I get it.  Romeo and Juliet.  He’s going to kill himself because he thinks she’s dead—but she’s not!  Which he should know!  If, that is, he’d been paying attention at all to all the Romeo & Juliet foreshadowing that played out in the one moment in which anyone in this movie did anything at all like the high school student they’re supposed to be.  i.e. Went to class.

Dakota Fanning!  Dakota Fanning is a vampire!  And almost an adult!

Back in Forks.  Edward too.  Some awesome lines.  When did this become a comedy?

One last showdown with the shirtless wonder.  How long is this movie?  Don’t love her, Jacob.  You’re 16.  And did you notice—your rating with her went UP when she found out you were a monster?  She’s weird.  Also, overrated.  Tell me again why men love her?  Or why women love him?  Or why people love this movie?  Or why those teenage girls in front of us are glaring at me when I laugh?  Or why this movie had the third-highest grossing opening weekend of all movies—EVER—since the dawn of time??

It’s official.  It’s over.  And I didn’t like it.

Maybe I’m not a girl.
