It’s a tradition as old as the Johnny Carson show: Most nights, since 1966, bands big and small play on the national stage of late night television. Sometimes good things happen, sometimes bad things happen, but the performances are always worth watching. They’re captivating mostly because they offer the raw sound of a live band and the professional video and audio recording of a late night television show.

This week’s TV lineup reinforces the idea that has emerged over the past month: Late night shows love legacy artists. While there’s always a healthy dose of new acts in the lineup (Kacey Musgraves, Alice Russell, and Icona Pop), most of the slots are dominated by artists that are either returning for second, third or fourth albums (Ben Harper, Phoenix, Zac Brown Band, Band of Horses) or from apparent retirement (Johnny Marr, Cheap Trick, Iggy and the Stooges, who quietly released The Weirdness in 2007 and are resurfacing with Ready to Die).

As if there weren’t enough reasons around that make summer in Chicago awesome, our local Alternative Rock (is that still technically the term/genre?) radio station Q87.7, has announced the launch of its first PIQNIQ festival. The new festival will take place at First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre on June 29.

What may be the most important part about this announcement is that the fest’s headliners will be the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, who are making their only appearance in Chicago(land). Some of the other bands that will be heading over to Tinley are Bush, AWOLNATION, Silversun Pickups, Cold War Kids, and Atlas Genius among others.

Wednesday, May 1 – Johnny Marr

Angular guitar legend Johnny Marr has been working nonstop since his stalwart days in the Smiths, but the recent release of The Messenger marks Marr’s first foray into true solo album territory. Like many of other acts on this list, Marr has been playing for decades now, and his proficiency will, at least, be fun to watch (and hear).

Old Crow Medicine Show have long been responsible for heralding pop-minded bluegrass to the un-country-minded folks of Greater America, and for good reason: Their banjo picking and foot stomping recalls days of real songwriting ingenuity. Calculated pop-folk has witnessed a real resurgence in the past few years, but Old Crow Medicine show are the real deal.

Iggy Pop has been making music for a long time – like, 50 years. He’s had some tough luck bringing that experience to a solid album project, but there’s one thing that’s certain: Iggy always puts on a heckuva semi-nude show. Tune in for lots of tanned abs and preening sneers.

AWOLNATION spent most of 2012 on the road, which was especially rough on lead singer Aaron Bruno’s voice.

The frontman told CBS Local it becomes hard not to overdo it when you’re trying to connect with a larger crowd.

“I have a tendency to over sing and scream too much,” he said. “Then I have a hard time for the next three shows.”

Not that Bruno’s complaining. The reason for all the vocal strain has to do with the band’s ever-expanding fan-base thanks to festival performances like Austin City Limits in Texas where the band played to a crowd of nearly 40,000.

“It’s one thing to play in front of 400 kids sold out and excited, then all of a sudden it’s 1,000… and then 10 and 20 and then 40 [thousand],” he explained. “It’s hard not to blow out your voice cause you see this sea of people and you’re trying to reach those people’s ears as well.”

Though Bruno says his band has had some massive moments this year, one of his personal favorites has to be playing the same stage as Radiohead during Coachella.

“To be able to see the AWOLNATION’s gear next to Radiohead’s gear,” he said, “that was an amazing experience.”

The Coachella gig also made him feel like his little band had finally made the big time.

“I was kind of scared, you know, if anyone was going to pay attention or if we were going to be accepted amongst that crowd,” Bruno said. “We totally were and it was a great experience.”
