Guns N' Roses vuelve a la acción

Luego del largo silencio en que ha estado Guns N’ Roses tras la aparición de su último álbum “Chinese Democracy”, anunció este jueves en su sitio de Internet algunas fechas de su gira, donde comenzará en Taiwán a finales de este 2009 y tiene contemplado entre marzo y abril del 2010 tocar en Sudamérica.

En su sitio marca que comenzarán desde el 10 de marzo y terminarán su gira por tierras latinoamericanas el 10 de abril, lo que probablemente será un tour bastante largo. Aunque todavía no especifican cuáles serán los países que visiten.

De esta forma, Axl Rose, único integrante original de Guns N’ Roses, volverá a la carga con su banda, y sin duda alguna demostrará su gran experiencia en el escenario. Esperemos que incluyan a México durante su gira, ya que nuestro país siempre ha sido fiel a su música, a pesar de los cambios drásticos de integrantes.

Depois de meses de especulações o Guns N’ Roses confirmou que vai tocar na América do Sul. A banda de Axl Rose, único membro da formação original, anunciou no seu site oficial que vai se apresentar no continente entre 10 de março e 10 de abril de 2010. Não foi confirmado em quais países a banda vai passar.

A banda traz a turnê Chineses Democracy World Tour que começa em dezembro na Ásia e segue depois para o Canadá. Axl vem divulgar o álbum mais recente da banda, Chinese Democracy, que depois de 15 anos foi finalmente lançado no ano passado.

A verdade é que o Guns N’ Roses acabou nos anos 90 com a saída de Slash e os outros membros originais, depois disso o Axl e seu enorme ego tornaram a banda em uma piada, que vive do sucessos do passado.

That said, I hereby declare Axl Rose to be the greatest living rocker still attempting to make music. To back up my declaration I present to you Chinese Democracy. Holy crap, what the hell is this? A goddamn disaster is what it is. Out now for a year, I’m finally getting around to listening to it and hey, what can I say, he made me wait 15 years, and I’m sure the world’s been fine for 12 months without my opinion on the record. Or if not fine, since it kind of seems like it stinks, then at least my lack of review has not been a part of the problem.

Now, the truth be told I guess I really only liked Appetite for Destruction. It’s not that G N’ R Lies didn’t have its moments, but you can’t go home again, so they say, and for supremely great rock moments it’s true.

Chinese Democracy doesn’t so much try to go home, rather than build something new and better. It reminds me of Ford and Dodge trying to remake the Mustang and Charger. The new versions are reminiscent of the old muscles, yes, but ultimately they just kind of suck.

That’s a bit unfair to the album though, because it doesn’t just kind of suck, it sucks really bad. I won’t quote Homer Simpson and say it’s the suckiest suck suck that ever sucked,” but at least it tried and damn if that ain’t something. I’m in awe of its terribleness. It makes me weak and trembly. It is absolutely impossible for most of our beloved rock icons to have created this (maybe Neil Young or Lou Reed – keep your chins up boys!)  Nothing like this could have been phoned in from a hillside house outside of Palo Alto. This is as real as a television exploding out of a 7th story hotel window. 15 years and this is what we get. Songs about the I.R.S. and Catcher in the Rye? Moments of rock and disco? Messy, infantile, without a moment of cohesion. Maybe after 15 years he was just done with it all. Clearly Chinese Democracy is a giant white whale, but why I love Axl, if not his latest album, is that I believe he thinks he totally slayed it. Rock is dead. Long live rock.

Post Scriptus ~I am thoroughly unqualified to review anything Guns N’ Roses. I was reading a hilarious piece on the band by James Parker and truly thought he was writing for the sake of absurdity during the section about guitarist Buckethead. How could I have been so wrong? Rock is dead. Long live rock.

Even if it will be only a brief period of time … like, um, maybe one song … Adler and Slash will jam on stage for the Slash & Friends benefit concert in L.A.  The Slash & Friends concert is a fundraiser (dubbed LAYN ROCKS) for the Los Angeles Youth Network (LAYN),  a non-profit organization providing services to homeless and runaway youth.

To Adler, this is the progress of his dream of being closer to Slash, and continue playing with Slash (Yes, he can’t let go). Other guests at the show will be Andrew Stockdale, Perry Farrell, Billy Idol, Ozzy, Travis Barker, Tom Morello, Dave Navarro, Franky Perez, to name a few. This will be the first Slash & Friends gig in L.A., too.

Foram quatorze anos entre o anúncio e, enfim, o lançamento do Chinese Democracy, último disco do Guns N’ Roses, e tenho certeza que a pergunta básica que qualquer fã que ponha as mãos nele gostaria de saber é: valeu a pena? Em uma resposta curta, não. O disco certamente não valeu esse tempo todo de espera.

Isso, no entanto, não faz dele necessariamente um disco ruim – o que se pode dizer com certeza é que é diferente. Com exceção da faixa-título, que tem uns riffs e solos que até lembram um Slash genérico, as músicas deste poucas vezes soam como o Guns N’ Roses com que todos se acostumaram. Há flertes com o rock industrial, com a bacaninha Shackler’s Revenge, e até com o pop-rock de FM, com If the World, que quase poderia ser uma música da Rihanna. Para além dos experimentalismos com batidas e efeitos eletrônicos, ainda, em muitas músicas o próprio Axl Rose, vocalista ditatorial e único remanescente da formação clássica, canta em tons mais graves, embora os seus famosos gritos agudos ainda estejam bem reconhecíveis quando aparecem. Em geral, eu diria que as músicas deste lembram um pouco mais o Guns de Civil War e Coma que o de Sweet Child O’ Mine e Paradise City.

A grande questão é até que ponto ser diferente é necessariamente ruim. Guns foi uma ótima banda, mas também um fruto da sua época – foi o ápice das bandas cabeludas do rock pesado pré-grunge no fim dos anos 80, ao mesmo tempo a melhor delas e a que acabou com o gênero (afinal, por que você ouviria Def Leppard ou Poizon se podia ouvir Appetite for Destruction?). Muitos dos seus grandes sucessos, como Welcome to the Jungle e You Could Be Mine, se mantém ainda incrivelmente bons e escutáveis mesmo vinte anos depois. De um ponto de vista mais amplo, no entanto, o seu rock pesado em tons agudos, baladas acústicas com dúzias de violões e clipes recheados de super-modelos hoje parecem um tanto datados, resquício de uma época ultrapassada em que um banda de rock podia sonhar em ser épica e grandiosa sem soar como o My Chemical Romance. Havia muito de energia pós-adolescente nos seus primeiros discos, aquela época em que se acha que pode destruir tudo o que há de errado no mundo e então reconstruir tocando uma guitarra, e há algo de patético em alguém de quarenta anos tentando manter o mesmo tipo de atitude – pergunte ao Mick Jagger. Nisso certamente há de se admirar a coragem (ou pretensão megalomaníaca, segundo muitos) do Axl em ao menos tentar fazer algo diferente, mais maduro, evitando o caminho fácil de virar um cover de si mesmo.

No fim, Chinese Democracy não é um disco ruim. Não é aquela bomba que muita gente anunciou; só não é também um disco que valha treze milhões de dólares e quatorze anos de espera. Há algumas faixas bem interessantes, como There Was a Time e Street of Dreams, e até, vá lá, dá pra escutar ele todo uma ou duas vezes vezes sem encher o saco e parar no meio.

Since I just wrote a blog about love perhaps it’s appropriate to post a few love songs for the romantics in the crowd tonight. I’m not sure why I’m in the mood considering me and my roommate have done nothing today except play video games but there you have it. Maybe loves songs isn’t quite the right word either but you’ll get my point.

Foo Fighters: The One – We all need to celebrate the moment and no one knows living in the moment like Dave Grohl. The Orange County Soundtrack [my sleeper pick for the top ten soundtracks ever] yields this hard-hitting anthem about the girl of all girls, “The One”. [Also - this is a great video! So good in fact that I had to include their live version on Letterman with Jack Black.]

American Pearl: Amphetamine – This is one of those songs that makes you say “why wasn’t this a single?” The LA band has long since this broken up but at least they left us with a classic.

Arctic Monkeys: The Bad Thing – One of the biggest bands in the UK is starting to make some [good] noise here in the states. I love this song, and while it’s a big masochistic, I think it will be in your MP3 player before the sunrise. The link is for a demo – I couldn’t find the finished version online, but I still dig it.

Burden Brothers: If You’re Going To Heaven – Such a great song and one of my favorite lyric pieces ever. I’m not going to give you the link to this song I want you to go out and buy this album. I’m not joking – In my top ten albums of my lifetime. It’s that good.

Guns ‘n Roses: This I Love – God should probably damn me for recommending a song from the new GNR but I really love this ballad and I think it’s the only good thing Axl Rose will ever have his hand in again. Might even be my wedding song someday if that certain girl tolerates it. Axl is also a total douchebag and no one can put his music online so here is a recording of someone else playing the piano piece [still beautiful]

I was Saul Hudson, better known as Slash, last night for Hallowe’en. That top hat was fabricated at 10:30pm using a Lucky Charms box, some cardboard, and some tinfoil, all duct-taped and hot-glued to a witch’s hat from the dollar store. The cigarette is a rolled-up index card with masking tape on the “filter” to keep it from getting all waterlogged, which worked perfectly.

And that hair. That hair is all me, baby, and I didn’t even need to tease it. The photo doesn’t do it justice, it was sooo big and sooo puffy it was like a cloud from another dimension. All I did was rinse out most of the conditioner I use to keep it from taking over the solar system, and it expanded to the point where this morning I found a bartender caught in it from last night.

And she was all “HI” and I was all “GAH” and I tried to shake her free. And she was like “AWW WHY DO I HAVE TO LEAVE THIS SOFT DOWNY NEST IT IS SO COMFORTABLE WITH ALL ITS UNTAMED POOF IT IS LIKE LYING IN A PILE OF BUNNIES” and I was all “GET OUT OF HERE AND ALSO HOW DID YOU GET IN THERE ANYWAY” and she was all “LAST NIGHT YOU BRUSHED PAST ME AND YOUR HAIR ABSORBED ME AND I WAS SCREAMING AND FLAILING BUT YOUR MARVELLOUS HAIR DAMPENED MY BLOWS AND MUFFLED MY CRIES LIKE SOME KIND OF SPACE AGE INSULATION” and I was all “GO HOME IMMEDIATELY” and she was all “BUT PLEASE SPACEPERSON I AM STILL ENTANGLED” and finally she used a Swiss Army knife to “slash” her way free of the tendrils and she said “HA HA PUN INTENDED” and I lost my temper and went “GET OOOOOUT I AM LAAAAAATE FOR DIM SUUUUUM” So she started to back away but then darted in one more time to pet my hair very gently with just the tips of her fingers, and I made a face like “DON’T MESS WITH ME LADY” and she gasped and skittered away like an adolescent deer through the undergrowth and I went to meet my relatives for some dim sum.

Anyway, this is why I use so much conditioner. Leaving my hair untamed was rather like having a possum, three wolverines, and a canoeload of buffalo pelts all wrapped around my head for the evening.

Overall the costume worked out pretty well for something created in such a last-minute hustle. I went to the washroom at one point, and a panicky woman in Edie Sedgwick eyelashes said “SLASH THIS IS THE LADIES’ ROOM” and then I felt like a success. But then, like 10 minutes later, I was striding powerfully up the street to the bank machine, emitting as much early 1990s rock-n-roll machismo as my skinny jeans could muster, and some teenager goes
“HEY IT’S MICHAEL JACKSON”

If you are a brown person and own a top hat of some type- or just ninja skillz for making one out of cardboard, like me & Jimmy here, well then here are two things you can be for hallowe'en. PS. Neither of these things is Michael Jackson.

Moments later my hair reached out and grabbed that guy behind me and dissolved him for his nutrients. He knew it was gonna happen, too. You can see it in his tiny terrified eyes.

It seems like everyone wants to be a rock star. Rock stardom symbolizes power, adoration, rebelliousness, individuality with impunity, and really cool clothes. But I wonder if the myth of the rock star would loom as large if not for rock photographers, who harnessed the electric appeal of these performers and their lives and ignited in so many of us the desire to be just like them.

What’s Axl preparing to flick, you ask? A cockroach. I called Timothy yesterday to ask him about the photo, and he explained that he’d taken the band (the band being Guns N’ Roses, of course) to a biker bar in Asbury Park, New Jersey, in the wee small hours of the morning. “All these people were in there, all fucked up, and it just became this melee,” Timothy said. “I remember myself standing on the pool table screaming, “People! People!” And trying to get their fucking attention. I was just this skinny kid with all these lunatics. Axl was sitting on the table, and a roach crawled by. He reached forward with his finger to flick it at me, and I took the picture.”

A Steven Tyler le buscan sustituto

La legendaria banda Aerosmith se encuentra en estos momentos en una etapa de crisis, debido a que su cantante Steven Tyler se encuentra prácticamente en el limbo, tratando de poner orden a su vida, por lo que prefirió salir de la banda, aunque existen rumores de que volvió a recaer fuertemente en las drogas.

Por su parte el guitarrista Joe Perry comenzará una gira en Canadá con su banda Joe Perry Project, abriendo para los Mötley Crüe, durante enero y febrero del 2010.

Por otro lado se habla que Aerosmith está buscando un nuevo cantante para seguir vivos, pero la historia de esta banda comprueba que cuando han tocado sin sus integrantes originales de plano son un real fracaso, aunque también la mala relación que han llevado, más sus problemas con los estupefacientes, también ha provocado que su gran nivel musical  baje a la más pura mediocridad.

Así que pensar que Aerosmith sobreviva sin Steven Tyler, cuando su voz  es prácticamente el sello del grupo, es una idea que sus fans podrían considerar ridícula  y provoca cuestionamientos serios sobre el juicio de los demás integrantes de Aerosmith. 

Aerosmith sin Tyler, sería como los Rolling Stones sin Mick Jagger  o Metallica sin James Hetfield, sin embargo ya comienzan a decirse nombres de quién podría sustituirlo y aquí les damos algunas opciones.  

Tom Keifer, quien fuera el frontman de Cinderella, podría ser un sustituto con afán de revancha, porque seguramente conoce al dedillo el material de Aerosmith. Recordemos que Tom se vestía igual de Steven Tyler y hasta tomaba de la misma forma el micrófono. Sería un renacer para este talentoso cantante y compositor, pero esto es sólo un deseo de Inquisidor71, ya que las últimas noticias que se tienen de este talentoso músico es que perdió la voz, debido a unos nódulos en sus cuerdas vocales.

John Corabi fue brevemente el cantante de Mötley Crüe, en la etapa en que esta banda quiso cambiar su sonido radicalmente, pero sin buenos resultados. A pesar de todo, la calidad de este cantante es incuestionable y podría musicalmente dar el ancho en la música de Aerosmith, pero no es tan dinámico en sus movimientos;  nadie baila como Tyler.

Chris Robinson de The Black Crowes podría ser otro candidato ideal, ya que domina esa mezcla de blues-rock con maestría. Quizás tendría que dejar de lado un poco la banda que lo ha hecho famoso para probar qué se siente subirse  al escenario con esta gran banda.

Stephen Pearcy ex cantante de Ratt, modernizó con esta banda, el hard-rock  de los años 80’s. Aunque muchos los comparaban con Def Leppard, la realidad es que su mayor influencia era Aerosmith, sólo que eran más dinámicos en las guitarras. La voz agresiva de este cantante haría un efecto interesante en la música de la banda que dirige Joe Perry.

Sebastian Bach es un intérprete que a pesar de salir de Skid Row hace varios años, ha mantenido su fama con participaciones en series de televisión y en realitys, así como con participaciones en Broadway, así como en uno que otro disco solista.

Su voz ha sido considerada una de las mejores del heavy metal, pero ahí está el problema, no se identifica mucho con el rock-blues, pero seguramente se pondría a ensayar con todo para ser adorado por los fans de Aerosmith.

Josh Todd de Buckcherry es dinámico en el escenario y tiene una voz rocanrolera de primer nivel, quizás sea el que más se adapte a las necesidades de Aerosmith. Por algo los lectores de la revista Rolling Stone lo tienen ubicado como el principal candidato para sustituir a Steven Tyler.

David Johansen quien fuera el frontman de New York Dolls también es otro candidato favorito para entrar a Aerosmith, sin embargo no creo que logre el nivel por el cual se hizo famoso. Sin embargo, si conserva su dinamismo en el escenario podría salir adelante en esta hipotética empresa.

Axl Rose fue influenciado tremendamente por Aerosmith, sino chequen su versión en vivo con los Guns N’ Roses de “Mama Kin”. Y en realidad es el único que lo veo adecuado para la música de esta banda, ya que tiene una gran voz con perfectos  agudos y graves, así como un estupendo manejo escénico. Pero si fuera invitado, su ego probablemente se lo impediría.

Cormac Neeson de la banda hard-rockera The Answer también es mencionada por algunos medios como un ideal sustituto, aunque en mi particular punto de vista no podría mantener el ritmo dramático que impone Tyler en vivo.

David Coverdale, líder de Whitesnake le cambiaría la cara a Aerosmith. Si con Jimmy Page cantó como Robert Plant, por qué no podría hacerlo como Steven Tyler, además su manejo en las vocales del blues-rock y del hard-rock es de grandes ligas.

Nota: También se menciona a David Lee Roth,  a Iggy Pop  y a un tipo que participó en American Idol, llamado Adam Lambert, pero sobre este último, a pesar de su talento, quizás su homosexualidad no sea del agrado de los legendarios Aerosmith.

Poor Billy Corgan.
