This week’s DVD releases cover a lot of territory. They include a family film from the director of “Spy Kids,” a holiday comedy starring Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon, an Adam Sandler feature helmed by writer-director Judd Apatow and a big-budget thriller starring Tom Hanks.

Funny People
3 stars
DVD contains rated and unrated versions of the film. The rated version received an R for language and crude sexual humor throughout, and some sexuality
Universal
Available on: DVD and Blu-ray

There are enough funny people in writer-director Judd Apatow’s appropriately titled relationship dramedy to keep things interesting through the movie’s 155-minute run, but the filmmaker is awfully lucky he assembled the cast that he did.

Adam Sandler stars as George Simmons, a wildly popular actor-comedian who seems to have it all: Hit movies, a palatial Southern California home and the adoration of fans everywhere. But when Simmons learns he’s contracted a deadly disease that could very well end his life, he begins to question his place in the world, and he latches onto a fledgling comedian named Ira Wright (Seth Rogen) for support. Although funny, Ira is yet to perfect his standup routines, so he’s ecstatic when the veteran Simmons agrees to hire him as a personal assistant, and the two men quickly form an awkward but genuine friendship.

Apatow sets up the premise with style, and its interesting to watch Simmons, who is jaded and miserable, interact with George, who is still full of hope and excitement. Unfortunately, the movie takes a negative turn when Apatow leads us into a subplot built around the one big love (Leslie Mann) that George let slip away. Because Sandler and Rogen are a lot of fun to watch, and because they get good supporting performances from Mann, Eric Bana, Jonah Hill and Jason Schwartzman, we can forgive Apatow for straying. Still, there’s little doubt that “Funny People” would have been funnier if it skipped the romantic stuff and put all its energy into George’s bout with mortality and his relationship with Ira.

The movie is available as part of multiple home video releases, including a two-disc Unrated Collector’s Edition. Extra features vary.

Angels & Demons: Extended Edition
2½ stars (out of four)
Unrated
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
Available on: DVD and Blu-ray

You have to give director Ron Howard credit for consistency. His adaptation of writer Dan Brown’s “Angels & Demons” shares precisely the same pace and tone as his earlier take on Brown’s bestseller “The DaVinci Code.” Trouble is, “The Da Vinci Code” movie is merely a workmanlike thriller, while the book was a breathtaking piece of genre fiction.

“Angels & Demons” is arguably a weaker novel, but I had higher expectations for the film because the plot is more cinematic. While “The Da Vinci Code” spent a lot of time focused on ancient codes and ciphers, “Angels” is a fast-paced footrace through the streets of Rome. As in “Da Vinci,” Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) is at the center of the action.

Langdon is called upon by the Vatican when it appears that a secret society known as the Illuminati has surfaced and placed a devastatingly powerful bomb at the heart of Vatican City. Equally horrifying is a message claiming that four cardinals — the most likely successors to the just-deceased pope — have been kidnapped and will be publicly executed. The perpetrators have left hints as to when and where they will commit their nasty deeds, but they are steeped in historic riddles that only Langdon has the ability to decipher.

Intent on stopping the murders, he embarks on a desperate race to solve the riddles and beat the Illuminati at its sick game. He’s aided by the Vatican police, Swiss Guard and a beautiful physicist named Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer). Also helping is Camerlengo Patrick McKenna (Ewan McGregor) who — because of the pope’s death — is temporarily the lead authority at the Vatican.

Howard does a good job recreating the events depicted in the book, and Hanks captures the Robert Langdon spirit perfectly, all of which leaves us with a decent movie. Decent, but not great. What the film lacks is the breathlessness one feels while reading the novel. Yes, there are exciting moments on screen, but they are frequently countered by extended dialogue sequences that relieve much of the tension. Part of the trouble is that Brown’s plotting is complicated and cerebral, and it’s tough to condense that type of storytelling into a two-and-a-half hour movie. It can be done, but it takes an extraordinary effort, and everything about this film is painfully ordinary.

DVD extras include more than a half dozen making-of features, focused on everything from the adaptation of the novel to the film’s elaborate props.

Four Christmases
2½ stars
Rated PG-13 for some sexual humor and language
New Line Cinema
Available on: DVD and Blu-ray

With most DVD releases hitting stores less than six months after a film was released into theaters, it feels odd to get “Four Christmases” a full year after its theatrical run. But, clearly, New Line Cinema decided the video would attract more attention during the holiday season. The studio is probably right because, as a comedy, “Four Christmases” is slight, but there aren’t many holiday films to choose from, and it’s always nice to have something new to throw in alongside “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “White Christmas.”

Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon star as Brad and Kate, a modern power couple that have never married and spend their holidays trying to dodge their fractured relations. Things go awry, however, when bad weather stops their planned flight to Fiji and a television news crew interviews them about the bad break. Suddenly, their parents — all divorced — are aware that they’re available for the holiday, forcing them to accept invitations to four separate Christmas celebrations … one with Brad’s crotchety father (Rober Duvall), one with Kate’s newly spiritual mother (Mary Steenburgen), one with Brad’s anything-goes mom (Sissy Spacek) and one with Kate’s surprisingly normal dad (Jon Voight).

Like “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” the film considers the stress of family gatherings, but never in a mean-spirited or distressing way, and Vaughn and Witherspoon are typically charming. “Four Christmases” is a generic comedy in every sense, but it has enough funny moments to make it viable for anyone who enjoys Vaughn and Witherspoon. The film will never replace “Miracle on 34th Street,” but it does go down awfully well with a nice glass of egg nog.

The DVD has no extra features.

Shorts
2½ stars
Rated PG for mild action and some rude humor
Warner Brothers
Available on: DVD and Blu-ray

In one of the more bizarre careers in film history, do-it-all filmmaker Robert Rodriguez regularly shifts between, ultra-violent action movies — “Planet Terror,” “Sin City,” “Once Upon a Time in Mexico” — and family friendly material — “Spy Kids,” “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl.” “Shorts” falls into the latter category, telling the story of several children who discover a mysterious charm called a Wishing Rock. The kids soon learn that any wish made with the rock in hand will come true, leading to wild adventures with space aliens, upright crocodiles and even a booger monster.

All the craziness is set against the backdrop of the ultra-corporate world they call home. You see, the children’s parents work for a gigantic corporation run by a nasty CEO named Mr. Black (James Spader). Predictably, his kids, Helvetica (Jolie Vanier) and Cole (Devon Gearhart), are the town bullies.

Rodriguez chose to tell his story through a series of short films that are replayed out of order, leaving viewers to piece things together a little at a time. The most important player is Toby “Toe” Thompson (Jimmy Bennett), the narrator of the each piece.

“Shorts” is wild, wacky and childlike enough to appeal to most elementary school-age children. It is not, however, as carefully crafted as today’s better family films. Rodriguez’s plotting is so over-the-top, it seems he was focused solely on letting his inner child loose, forgetting that a great family picture also includes something for parents.

Along with the movie, the DVD includes one of Rodriguez’s “Ten Minute Film School” extras, this one focused on the making of “Shorts.” Also included is a “Ten Minute Cooking School” episode devoted to the making of Chocolate Chip Volcano Cookies.

I watched “Angels & Demons” expecting escapist entertainment, because really, expect

I watched “Angels & Demons” expecting escapist entertainment, because really, expecting anything else from a film based on a Dan Brown novel is just silly — I have not read “Angels & Demons”, but I read “The DaVinci Code” and if there’s one thing it teaches us, is that there is such a thing as an overwritten plot (and that, okay, bashing the Catholic Church is fun). I fully expected that for this film, with fast-paced editing to hide all the holes in it and expositional dialogue to make sure the audience could keep up with all the mythology and symbology, because it’s a well-known fact the audience is fully comprised of utter morons like myself who need arrows pointing to the screen in a movie theather so they know where to look at.

And even with my hopes low enough to be capable of withstanding an Aaron Seltzer/Jason Friedberg spoof flick for five or six minutes before slamming my own head with a car door, “Angels & Demons” still managed to fall many miles below said hopes and the more I think about the film, the more its quality approaches the center of the Earth.

In the film, scientists have managed to produce antimatter with the Large Hadron Collider. Right after they do it, the capsule containing the antimatter is stolen by a hired gun. Soon, the battery keeping the antimatter suspended in vacuum will run out of power, which will result in a huge — yes. In other words, the movie simply uses the antimatter as a glorified (and very preposterous) nuke, and the only reason it’s antimatter and not any other kind of powerful bomb is because the plot needed an explosive device that could be made by the Large Hadron Collider (which, in real life, it can’t make anyway), for the sake of pretentious “Science vs. Religion” symbolism (something Ron Howard very subtly depicts by interrupting the flow of the movie to show a bunch of cardinals using cameras and cellphones like that’s a groundbreaking revelation or clever irony). How the hired gun knew the antimatter experiment would be successful, and why he didn’t look for a less complicated bomb, is cleverly left unexplained by the film, since any attempts to actually explain it would certainly result in utter embarassment. Shame the film stops caring about not embarassing itself in a matter of minutes.

The Vatican is about to choose the next fanatic moron to lead them and wear that remarkably goofy hat, since the previous pope has just died. However, the four favorite cardinals have been kidnapped by the same hired gun who stole the antimatter. He claims he will kill one of them every hour, starting at 8 pm, until the battery of the antimatter capsule runs out at midnight. Cry your heart out, Anton Chigurh. You spend an entire movie hunting a redneck with a briefcase and meanwhile this guy steals antimatter and kidnaps four cardinals in the first minutes of the film. However, I think this is because Chigurh is a character in an actually good movie with a believable plot. Also, the Swiss Guard are not depicted as very intelligent or efficient people in “Angels & Demons”, since their reaction to finding a cardinal immediately after he’s attacked is to stare at him dramatically as he dies instead of hunting the killer who is very possibly still around.

With the antimatter stolen and four cardinals kidnapped, the Swiss Guard turns to Robert Langdon, a symbologist who seems to think everyone around him is retarded, judging by how he finds it necessary to use Italian terms mixed in with English sentences and then translate said terms to characters who either speak or are Italian. This is especially dickish of him since he’s a religious symbologist who, in two scenes, needs help to read Italian and, for fuck’s sake, Latin. Granted, all the characters in the film have this overpowering urge to explain everything. Every time someone mentions a religious term, someone else describes it. Or the character himself does. A particularly hilarious moment is when Langdon says “You didn’t tell me they were the preferiti — the favorites to be named the next pope”. And when your character feels the need to explain what the preferiti are to the Swiss Guard — your dialogue is shit. That or your character is a pedantic asshole.

But really, I should have realized that this being a film co-written by Akiva Goldsman, I’d have to be dead and in Hell to enjoy it. Yes, the usually very competent David Koepp is the other writer, but according to imdb.com, he was hired to re-write the script. My guess is that he read it and realized the only way to re-write it would be to throw it in the fire and start over, but probably there wasn’t time for that, so he threw in one or two passable lines of dialogue and called it a day — hopefully moving to a better project that is more suitable to the man who wrote my favorite film, “Carlito’s Way”.

It isn’t only the dialogue being absurdly badly-written and the plot preposterous that ruins this film — it’s also extremely predictable. And the really pathetic part is that it tries its best to hide who the villain is — and that’s precisely why it’s so easy to figure that out. (Rest of this paragraph might reveal the villain, so spoiler warning, if you care) The writers pretty much put a halo in his head and treat him as a complete saint, while making the other characters unreasonable by contrast. They even go as far as hiring an actor who usually plays good guys for said role, while the other ones have played proeminent villains in other productions. And if you’ve ignored the spoiler warning and this reveals who the villain is for you, really, I doubt the movie would be more successful in fooling you. If it is, maybe you’ve hit your head recently.

However, what truly destroys this film and makes it such a disaster is how pretentious it is. It actually thinks it has something relevant to say about the ongoing debate (and in several cases, war) between Religion and Science. In fact, the characters feel the need to spell the movie’s simplistic message out for us, the poor misleaded audience, in case we have failed to grasp it. And at the same time, “Angels & Demons” ignores that it has invalidated its own message — and if at this point you still care about spoilers, don’t read the rest of this paragraph (or the entire review, since I’m not being too careful with spoilers anyway) — it is revealed the Illuminati do not exist in this film and are used as a deception by the villain, who is a Catholic fanatic. In other words, this whole mess has originated within the Church and there is no war between Science and Religion at all. The blame falls squarely on the Catholic Church alone. This explains why, in the ending, when a character says there is room for Religion and Science in the world, I wanted to claw my own eyeballs out.

There’s also the plotholes, of course. The executions of the preferiti are supposed to be public in order to achieve the desired effect, and yet most of them would have gone unnoticed if Langdon hadn’t found the bodies; the Great Elector says there will be no election without the preferiti, and half an hour later there he is trying to elect the new pope without them; and not only the movie fictionalizes some Vatican procedure (the Camerlengo is not as powerful as the pope during his absence, as depicted), but it fictionalizes science as well. Not only the depiction of antimatter is very dodgy, but for the love of Albert Einstein, since when taking a nuke (or antimatter that acts like a nuke) about a mile above the ground is a way of preventing destruction? Nukes detonate on the air for maximum impact — otherwise the ground soaks up a good portion of it. So when a character takes the nuke/antimatter/whatever to the skies in a helicopter, the other characters should have been trying to shoot it down with an RPG or something — but maybe then they remembered they’re in a film written by Akiva Goldsman based on a Dan Brown novel and relaxed.

The movie adds another interruption to the story so the Camerlengo can deliver a speech about Science vs. Religion that once again reiterates the film’s stupidity. “Who is more ignorant: the man who cannot define lightning, or the man who does not respect its natural awesome power?”, like you cannot both define it and respect it — and in fact, it’s thanks to attempts to understand electrical power that there is such a thing as a lightning rod. But the real gem is “There are things Science is too young to understand,” — and meanwhile the Bible claims the world was made a few thousand years ago. By an invisible man in the sky.

All this and I haven’t even talked about the technical aspects yet. I will avoid talking about the cast, since not a single actor receives a good character to play in this film. All I’ll say about the actors for having accepted their roles: are you all idiots/not rich enough yet?

Director Ron Howard continues his partnership with Akiva Goldsman by directing the film which as much ability as Goldsman writes it. Howard insists on spinning his camera around the characters while zoomed in on them, which causes that epic visual effect: the object or person focused by the camera spins slowly while the unfocused scenery behind them pans much faster. This, I presume, was Howard’s desperate attempt to make up for the endless talking and explanations. He does not restrain himself and as a result his job lacks subtlety — although the script (and Hans Zimmer’ overdone chorus-filled soundtrack) already did, but still. In fact, in two occasions, when Langdon is arriving at the possible location of a murder, he is startled by sounds that could be gunshots but are revealed to be perfectly innocent sounds from the crowd — this happens twice, consecutively.

The cinematography is not bad, although it overuses lighting coming from windows in otherwise dark rooms to shadow the many, many, many dialogue scenes. But considering this film happens in the Vatican, I can’t blame it for that, really. However, the cinematography is sabotaged by the inconsistent special effects, which reach their lowest by failing to depict the flight of helicopters convincingly — but to be fair, this might be due to Howard’s overdone camera movements.

Predictable and repetivive with only one action scene worth a fuck (the shootout in the church with a man being burned), “Angels & Demons” basically believes itself relevant and smart while at the same time believing the audience to be idiots, and the final shot is so nauseatingly optimistic and so horribly misses the point I could feel the bile trying to corrode its way out of my liver.

PS: I leave some room for the possibility of the movie being actually against the Church and pretending it’s not, in a satirical fashion, considering that the plot is pretty much revealed to be the Church’s fault alone — but this does not in any way enrich the film, since it’s never brave enough to admit its beliefs or even do satire properly, if that’s indeed the case.

Rosamund Pike Movie: Fugitive Pieces

Author Anne Michaels’s poetic novel comes to the screen courtesy of director Jeremy Podeswa in this period drama concerning a Holocaust survivor who remains eternally haunted by the uncertain fate of his beloved sister. Athos (Rade Sherbedgia) is an archeologist conducting a dig in Nazi-occupied Poland. When Athos discovers a seven-year-old boy named Jakob (Robbie Kay) hiding near the work site, he smuggles the frightened boy back to Greece and promises to shelter him when the Nazis come knocking there as well. Having previously witnessed the brutal massacre of his family at the hands of Hitler’s henchmen, Jakob longs to find out what fate befell his sister, Bella (Nina Dobrev) — who wasn’t executed with the majority of his other relatives but subsequently disappeared without a trace. After the war, Athos and Jakob emigrate to Toronto in hopes of starting a new life. But even after all these years, Jakob (Stephen Dillane) can’t seem to shake the grief of losing his family and not knowing what ever became of Bella. Later, when Jakob marries the radiant Alex (Rosamund Pike), the bright-eyed beauty does her best to illuminate the dark corners within her husband’s soul. To maintain one’s connection to ghosts requires a certain shunning of the living, however, and only when Jakob discovers the strength to let go of his painful past will he finally be able to move forward into the future.

I’ve always considered Tom Hanks to be a sort of modern Jimmy Stewart: slap him in any role and you’ve got an instantly likeable, enjoyable character. His charisma and personality has a way of infusing any character, from Forrest Gump to a gangster in Road to Perdition, with natural charm and good humour. When Hanks was tapped to play Robert Langdon in Ron Howard’s The Da Vinci Code, I thought it would be more of the same.

Unfortunately, Hanks didn’t come close to pulling off an interesting character and his trademark likeability was right out the window. In Howard’s Angels & Demons, in which Hanks reprises Dan Brown’s hero, it’s more of the same for poor Tom. The character is bland and wholly flat, offering nothing by way of personality or individuality to speak of. Hanks’ acting chops are entirely wasted, unfortunately.

Angels & Demons is based on Brown’s novel, which takes place before The Da Vinci Code. Brown stirred up an awful lot of trouble from confused religious people unable to tell fiction from reality and from conspiracy nuts with similar problems. Angels & Demons takes similar ground, attempting to develop a sort of dingy Catholic theology adventure story with Langdon as a low-rent Indiana Jones.

Hanks’ Langdon is tapped to head to the Vatican shortly after the death of a Pope. This surprises him, naturally, as the events of the previous film should have left him in less than ideal standing with the Church. The Church needs his skill-set as a symbologist (?) though, so it’s off to the land of smoke and mirrors he goes. When he arrives, Langdon finds himself in the middle of a plot that includes kidnapping and a group called the Illuminati.

The Illuminati is a group royally pissed at the Church for past persecution, so they’ve hatched a plan to interfere with the new Pope selection process and kill off the four top candidates for the appointment. They’re also going to destroy the Vatican c/o an antimatter vial that they stole from a nuclear research lab. Langdon’s eventual sidekick, Dr. Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer), helps the effort to locate the antimatter.

Obviously Langdon is very helpful because everything the Illuminati does can be traced thanks to his knowledge of symbols and their predictable behaviour. Their plans to assassinate Church leaders coordinates with the four altars of the Path of Illumination, of course, and Langdon is able to crack this by rifling through some books in the Vatican Archives and by generally knowing a lot about symbols. Along the way, more corruption is revealed and nothing is as it seems.

If Angels & Demons sounds formulaic and ludicrous, it is. While ridiculous plots are frequently forgiven if they offer something of value, Howard’s movie doesn’t accomplish much. It’s a whole lot of rushing around the Vatican, complete with CGI renderings of important places, and a whole lot more intrigue and “shocking” revelations about Catholic Church history. There’s also a whole science vs. religion conflict occurring, but Howard plays that angle fairly safe throughout.

Hanks’ Langdon remains an entirely unlikable character throughout the film and his co-stars are of no help, including Ewan McGregor as Camerlengo Patrick McKenna and Stellan Skarsgård as Commander Maximilian Richter. Zurer looks good in the role, but she offers little other than a running partner for Langdon as he works his way through various archives, museums and sacred locations. A scene that could have provided some humour between the two is quickly discarded in favour of, you guessed it, more chasing around.

All in all, Angels & Demons is an uninteresting and predictable bore of a picture. It isn’t the worst movie of the year by any stretch of the imagination and Howard directs it well enough, but there just isn’t anything new or exciting here. As an action picture, it’s repetitive and as a film about religious mystery, it’s bland as all hell.

Saw two movies recently. One I watched from the comforts of my home, on my laptop, downloaded from M

Saw two movies recently. One I watched from the comforts of my home, on my laptop, downloaded from Mininova, while the other one I watched with Juice, Coby and Zach from Rockwell Power Plant Cinema. The first one is “Angels and Demons,” while the the other one was of “Transformers:The Revenge of the Fallen.”

Let me discuss the first movie I watched: Angels and Demons is an adaptation of a Dan Brown novel. Dan Brown is the same author of the controversial movie ‘The Da Vinci Code” which was also made into a movie by Ron Howard, and also starred Tom Hanks, as Professor Robert Langdon. I had read both books (Yup, I can actually read a book that is not about sports or has no pictures. ) and was entertained if not intrigued by the subject matter at hand. Having read The Da Vinci Code long before the movie came out, I was excited when the movie version finally came out. I was disappointed at how the movie came out though. it wasn’t as exciting nor as “controversial” as I thought it would be. But chalk it up to the “I read the book but the movie wasn’t good” attitude that permeates people. I was expecting maybe too much. Really, all you Harry Potter fans out there, don’t you agree that the books are far better than the movies? Nevertheless we all still enjoy watching it come to life as I did watching The Da Vinci Code.

The Da Vinci Code

Audrey Tautou and Tom Hanks

When I found out that another Dan Brown novel, Angels and demons was being made into another movie, I quickly rushed over to the Bookstore ng bayan, NBS,and bought myself a spankin’ new paperback copy of the book.

Laking National ata ako.

I read the book and I was quickly into it. I finished the book, just in time for the movie’s opening in local theaters. Alas, it opened the same weeks as Star Trek and Wolverine, and it being an R-18 film, I didn’t have the time nor the company to watch it. I had to prioritize Kirk, Spock, Logan and Deadpool. I resigned myself to wait for the DVD copy.

A week ago to my surprise and glee , an R5 copy was in Mininova. I quicky downloaded it and waited around 3 days for 1.3gb copy to finish its downloading. Thank you seeders and leechers. When the torrent finished the copy, I quickly set up my laptop, Mountain Dew, Marty’s Crackling and opened the file using my Vlc player. The copy was fantastic. Audio is a 10, video is a 10. Like the da Vinci Code, Professor Langdon, played by Tom hanks is again the star of the movie. The movie takes liberties again, and is different from the book. Plotwise it is still the same, but maybe Ron Howard and co. felt that this way was more exciting…. and I actually agree. How different was it? Well, Angels and Demons was suppose to be set before The Da Vinci Code, but in the movie version, it comes after Langdon’s brush with the Catholic church in. Also,in the book, all 4 cardinals were killed, and the new Pope eventually is the cardinal who became the Carmelango in the movie. Got that? Anyway, I enjoyed the movie despite my reading the book and not nitpicking anout this and that. Oh, and another thing, Langdon gets the girl and in the end in the book, eventually hooking up. I enjoyed the part where the cardinals were gathering outside before conclave, some were texting, smoking, chatting away. I could swear a cardinal was playing with his PSP. Just goes to show you they are normal too. A friend of mine made a comment though, he felt he was watching an extra long Amazing Race. A great movie, I was entertained. Don’t think of the book, just enjoy the movie.

The Film

Angels & Demons is a book prequel but presented as a movie sequel by director Ron Howard and written for the silver screen by David Koepp and Akiva Goldsman.

The Preview

The Story

Father Silvano Bentivoglio, a lead scientist in the Large Hadron Collider project of the European Organization of Nuclear Research (CERN), was killed and one of the vials containing antimatter disappeared. Meanwhile, the Roman Catholic Church mourned the death of Pope Pius XVI in Rome, and Vatican City prepares for the papal conclave that will select the next Pope. So the charge to assume temporary control of the Vatican fell to Camerlengo Patrick McKenna (Ewan McGregor).

But as the Catholic faithful crowded the vast St. Peter’s Square, a 400-year-old underground secret society, Illuminati, kidnapped four Papabiles, the most likely candidates to assume the Papacy. The Illuminati threatened to kill one Papabile every hour starting 8:00 PM, and then destroy the Vatican in a burst of fire at midnight. A stolen security camera shows the missing antimatter vial, which will explode with expected catastrophic effect once the battery dies and the magnetic containment field fails.

To help solve the puzzle and avert a devastating tragedy, the Vatican summoned Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) and CERN co-lead scientist Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer). But they found themselves a few steps behind the assassin hired to pull the attack as the three of the four kidnapped cardinals fell at three different locations which corresponded to the three of the four “altars of science,” according to the banned book of Galileo Galilei borrowed from the Vatican Archives.

Until they barely discovered the lair of the Illuminati at the Castel Sant’Angelo, and just in time to save the life of the fourth Papabile, Aldo Cardinal Baggia, already gasping for breath tied and submerged underwater.

The succeeding events turned to their favor. As the assassin escaped, he spared the lives of Langdon and Vetra and told them that his contractor came from the Catholic Church. In the Church of Illumination, they uncovered the next target as camerlengo McKenna and found him in his office lying on the floor with Vatican Guard Commander Richter (Stellan Skarsgard), pointing a gun at him. The Guards killed Richter, from whom Langdon retrieves the key to Richter’s office.

Meanwhile, Langdon with Vetra, McKenna and few of the guards followed the clue of the crossed keys emblazoned on the chest of McKenna, and retrieved the stolen vial at the Tomb of Saint Peter. With less than five minutes before the vial detonates, McKenna seized the vial to let it explode above the Vatican as the battery dies.

McKenna became an instant hero, and the cardinals start talking about him as a most likely candidate to be the next Pope. He receives a summons to be present in the conclave. While this is happening, Vetra opens the office table of Richter and browses through the papers while Langdon reviews the security video that Richter kept on the papal office. They discover that the mastermind of the deaths, the kidnapping, and the robbery of the antimatter was the Camerlengo, and hastened to show it to Cardinal Strauss.

As McKenna arrives before the College of Cardinals, the Cardinals with Cardinal Strauss heading, confronted the Camerlengo with their silence and knowing stares. Getting the message and unspoken statement of the truth, McKenna hastily leaves and set himself on fire using the oil in one of the 99 holy lamps inside the St. Peter’s Basilica.

The film closes with Langdon being loaned for life the original copy of Galileo’s Diagramma Veritas by newly appointed Camerlengo Cardinal Strauss. The new Pope Luke I glances approvingly at Langdon as he starts walking off to present himself to the people at St. Peter’s Square.

The Review

Tom Hanks continued to perform his role very well, but the story is simply so flawed to help him salvage the film. Angels & Demons simply does not have a convincing storyline to offer in the first place. One positive note for the movie however at least for Catholics is the more even-handed way the information are being used in the movie. It is non-accusatory to the Catholic Church and is straightforward in its handling of the relationships among characters, allowing it to avoid the usual moral problems usually intertwined in the storymaking of Hollywood movies. Though, the mixing of facts with fiction can be confusing to viewers, particularly to Catholics. Nevertheless, it proposes certain valid observations albeit profound ones.

Even priests are not invulnerable to deadly ambitions. The Camerlengo’s ambition for the Chair of St. Peter made him create an elaborate plot to put himself into power on the expense of the lives of cardinals and on the reputation of Illuminati. This is a clear picture of what pride can do should a member of the clergy succumbs into it. The presumed holiness of priests can be in itself their invitation to pride, Satan’s most power and yet subtle weapon of destroying human soul. The signature of the Prince of Darkness can be seen in the camerlengo’s decision to commit suicide by burning himself with oil, and not even knowing his mistakes (he even prayed: “Father, in your hands I commend my spirit.”).

Men are flawed including priests. Cardinal Strauss (Armin Mueller-Stahl), Dean of the College of Cardinal and of the Papal Conclave, represents the specimen of Catholic insightfulness. His role shows what a genuine Catholic looks like. He functions as a stabilizing factor amidst the chaos outside created by the workings of evil through man. One of his most memorable scenes can be found in the final scenes. As he handed to Langdon the rare book of Galileo Galilei “Veritatis,” he requested Langdon to remember the Catholic Church as composed of flawed people (“Beneath this cloth, all men is flawed including this [pointing to himself].”).

God’s providence can make use the help of non-believers. This is an often overlooked truth in a world that believes God has nothing to do with non-believers. The Catholic Church teaches that everything works for the eventual good of mankind, and God can so arrange things that believers and non-believers participates in the work according to the graces given to them. Even those who resisted the grace of faith through pure human rational power can be moved with other graces–desire to help other people, intellectual curiosity, essential goodness of the human heart, etc.

However, three of the most glaring flaws of the film include: (1) the circumstances pointing to the discovery of the mastermind, (2) less obscure symbols not requiring the expertise of Langdon’s caliber, and (3) fictional “facts” mixed with true historical facts. There is a feeling that the anti-matter bomb is meant to be discovered; thus a less subtle manipulation of the story’s plot by the storyteller.

Discovery of the Mastermind. The discovery of the mastermind started with the hint (“They are men of God.”) dropped by the “Illuminati” assassin before he escaped but instead died in a car explosion. A professional assassin simply will not do that without strong motives. What the assassin in this movie did therefore was counter-rational. Apparently the film implies that he simply felt pity upon Langdon and Vetra for the trouble they went through in trying to stop a design that they cannot stop. While such decision could be possible in a story, what made it flawed here is the lack of development in that area that would have allowed the viewers to understand the “why” of such a behavior. Moreover, there is an order not to kill Langdon and Vetra. This too is counter-rational in a mastermind who wants to succeed in his plot. This again creates the feeling of the forceful intervention of the storyteller to make the problem “solvable.”

Less obscure symbols. The use of the four elements of nature–water, earth, fire, and air–while they are ancient symbols, they are overused in the movie industry. You can even find it in an animated TV series from Nickelodeon entitled Avatar: the Last Air-Bender. This commonplace-ness of these symbols make them less impressive to viewers who will ask as if in an knee-jerk reflex, is that it? In a way, it underrates the intelligence of Langdon who could have taken far more complex symbols. The excitement simply ebbs here. The time pressure though tried to keep its levels afloat.

Mixing of facts and fiction. While this storytelling tool is effective in creating buzz for the movie by creating a controversy and intriguethrough the fusion of facts and fiction (thus, creating its perceived importance), for Christians particularly Catholics, it can be dangerously misleading to viewers. Viewers unguided on which film statements are fictional may end up believing these, which can lead to doubting their Catholic faith. One relevant myth include such references to La Purga in 1668. For a more thorough review on the historical fictions in this film, please visit Counterbalance.

The Verdict

Angels & Demons failed to entertain the audience beyond what was accomplished by its movie prequel The Da Vinci Code. It did make for a safe watch for Catholics and other Christians, provided they consider historical statements made in the film as pure mythmaking “facts.” Otherwise, double checking the presented facts is needed, or at least a suspension of value judgments until facts are verified. However, it does inject insightful propositions to viewers that help in having their faith grounded in the realities of the human condition.

There are people who love Dan Brown, and there are people who violently hate the little bastard and his entire semi-literate fanbase. There appears to be very little in between. Except me of course, since I don’t know enough about Brown to hate him. Though after finally watching Ron Howard’s adaptation of The Da Vinci Code, I realized that if I ever cared enough to pick up one of Brown’s middlebrow time wasters, I’d certainly fall into the latter camp.

Howard follows up Da Vinci with Angels and Demons, casting Brown’s earlier novel as a sequel, since most readers read Angels after the breakout success of The Da Vinci Code. Also because Howard knows his viewers are too stupid to understand a prequel. This is also why he explains every turn in the action like it’s a fucking Scooby Doo mystery.

That being said, Howard handles Brown’s franchise far better the second time around. The tone is far less pandering, and the plot (mostly centralized in terms of location and theme) is far less convoluted, this time focusing on a longtime Catholic Church enemy (the spooky sounding “Illuminati”) and their threat to bomb the Vatican while the College of Cardinals gathers to select a new Pope.

Angels has a beginning, middle, and end that at least make some degree of sense, which is more than can be said for its predecessor. This is really all Howard needed to worry about, and he mostly stays out of the way, letting Tom Hanks (reprising his role as symbologist Robert Langdon) and the rest of his troupe hop around Rome and do whatever it is that they do.

Howard has made a perfectly average movie, which, sadly enough, is a giant step up for the franchise.

Film: Angels and Demons
Director: Ron Howard
Stars: Tom Hanks, Ayelet Zurer, Ewan McGregor, Stellan Skarsgard

Viewing situation: Weekday matinee, medium crowd; digital projection
My grade (out of 10): 5
Rotten Tomatoes average: 37%
