First off, I’m changing the title for my music “reviews” on my blog. “On Repeat” has a nicer ring to it than “Hooked On” does. I’m also introducing a new set-up that, hopefully, will make this entry shorter than the Gotthard one.

Now, I’ve been dying to write about this album for some time now, and tonight’s my first chance to do so.

Band: Guilt Machine

Album: “On This Perfect Day”

Released: August 2009 (Europe), September 2009 (USA) on Mascot Records

Genre: Progressive rock/metal with lots of ambiance

Background Info: Arjen Lucassen is regarded as one of the genuises of progressive rock and metal. He’s the mastermind behind the rock opera project Ayreon and the metal space-capade Star One, as well as one of the founding members of Stream of Passion. Now, with the Ayreon saga completed and SoP moving on with new members, Arjen has focused his efforts on a brand new project, known as Guilt Machine.

Guilt Machine is probably Arjen’s least complex musical project. It doesn’t feature 17 singers and ten or so guest musicians. Instead, there are only three musicians (five, if you count the string instruments) and one singer:

Jasper Steverlink (Arid) – vocals

Lori Linstruth (ex-Warbride, ex-Stream of Passion) – lyrics, lead guitar

Chris Maitland (ex-Porcupine Tree) – drums

Arjen Lucassen – guitars, keyboards, bass, programming

Music: Progressive rock/metal is a very complex musical style, and Arjen does it well. Each track is lengthy (the shortest track, “Over,” is just over 6 minutes long) and layered, so they hold your attention till the end. Also, most of the songs don’t keep to the typical verse-chorus-verse-chorus format. “Over” is the one exception, but it’s still more intricate and evocative than your average radio hit these days.

How does Guilt Machine sound? Well, a lot like Ayreon, but more quiet and brooding. There are plenty of loud moments, including Lori’s awesomely complicated guitar solos (lots of “wah” and tremolo effects), and some of those spacey-sounding synthesizers. But, there are also plenty of softer moments, which are beautiful and soothing to listen to. “Twisted Coil” is probably the best example of the balance of the loud and quiet moments, since it’s the most epic track on the album. “Over” and “Season of Denial” also combine the two sides of Guilt Machine effectively.

There is, however, one song that sends chills down my spine and a thrill through my body when I hear it: “Green and Cream.” While it starts off as atmospheric and calm, Chris Maitland’s quick cymbol work lets you know this song will soon take a different direction. Then, you get to the vigorous first chorus (“Green and cream, selective and pure…”), Lori’s quicksilver guitar solo, and finally the compelling second chorus (“Pull me out of the dark…”), and perhaps you’ll find yourself as smitted as I am with that tune.

Lyrics: The lyrics on this album are also different from most lyrical content on any Ayreon album. They don’t turn each song into a chapter of a story. Rather, the lyrics are more abstract and cryptic, and focus on themes such as guilt, regret, and depression. And despite this being Lori Linstruth’s first crack at writing lyrics, they’re pretty darn good. She uses lots of emotion and imagery, making it easy for the listener to relate to each song.

Vocals: Arjen struck gold her with his choice of a single male vocalist. Jasper Steverlink has great range, nailing the soft and powerful parts with ease. His interpretation of Lori’s lyrics is very earnest without over-singing on any track. I can’t say he doesn’t better on any particular track, but that he’s consistent throughtout the album. That’s a big plus.

Oh, and there are some catchy melodies on some songs. That was one of the highlights of the last Ayreon album “01011001,” and “On This Perfect Day” has some solid ones, too. I’ve found myself humming lines from at least half of the songs, particularly “Twisted Coil” and “Green and Cream.”

Weaknesses: None, to be honest. Each song is strong and solid in every way. If I had to pick one song that I don’t care for as much as the others, I’d say “Leland Street.” It’s not as interesting as the other songs, IMO.

Overall Rating: 4.5 / 5 One of my favorite albums this year. If you like complex rock/metal music, or a fan of Arjen Lucassen’s other projects, I highly recommend you getting this album.

Best Songs: “Twisted Coil,” “Green and Cream”

Now, I had a little bit of fun with the album lyrics. Here is a cool Wordle image with the most frequently used words in the lyrics for “On a Perfect Day,” with colors that are fairly close to the album art’s color palette.

I hadn’t realized how much I missed working till I sat in front of the computer two morning ago and looked at code. I loved the feeling it gave me!! I felt somehow complete. Wholesome. That I was doing something productive after a two month hiatus. Kind of the same feeling I had when I started attending classes and doing homework after a year. I’m enjoying the five hours of work every morning. At least that way I don’t oversleep, since I’ve to have breakfast, catch the shuttle to the downtown campus to be at work at 9 am sharp. I also get my daily dose of exercise when I walk some seven blocks to the train station to come back to school, have lunch, study, do homework, have dinner, attend lectures… by the time my day is done, I’m bone tired so I’m out by eleven on most nights and I end up getting a good eight hours of sleep <reduced from my earlier requirement of 9 hours>. And it’s just been three days.

I read Elizabeth Gaskell’s North & South, after realizing that Richard Armitage played a role in the BBC adaptation. I loved the book. The characters *sigh John Thornton*, the storyline, the love story… And I just rented the DVD as well, so I’m quite a happy camper watching Mr. Armitage put life into Thornton so beautifully I almost cried – I still have the last two episodes to watch. He reminds me so much of Colin Firth’s portrayal of Mr. Darcy – read my previous post for that rant – that I need to talk about it with someone who understands my obsession of English gentlemen from the previous centuries. He’s so absolutely deliciously hot! *insides melt* M and I – I need you guys to watch/read North & South !! PLEASE !!

I’ve begun making a list of the things I would like from home since my grandparents will be here for Thanksgiving !! *favorite corduroy trousers included* I’m planning to go on a music buying rampage as soon as I get my first salary at the end of this week or the next… Bought two pairs of awesome black gloves for winter… boots still pending…

*drools…Richard Armitage…he should play a vampire in the 18th century… I would actually swoon and fall off my chair if he did…actually*

Here’re a couple of songs currently on my playlist which have been in-sync with my mood of the past few days.

Ayreon’s Day Eighteen: Realization – the music is simply captivating

Ayreon’s Day Eleven: Love – the chorus and the personification…

Dream Evil’s The Chosen Ones from the album Dragonslayer – it’s catchy… stays within my metal boundaries well enough for me to enjoy the vocals, lyrics and the arrangement

Ten wokalista, gitarzysta, klawiszowiec i konstruktor dźwięku w jednym, aktywnie uczestniczył w wielu projektach, z których najbardziej znany to wyniosły Ayreon. Ledwo rok po premierze ostatniej płyty wspomnianego Ayreon, kolejny dziewiczy projekt Lucassena ma swoją premierę. To Guilt Machine.

Do pracy nad pierwszym albumem grupy Holender zaprosił trójkę muzyków. Najbardziej znany nich jest Christ Maitland, były drummer Porcupine Tree. Ponadto skład Guilt Machine uzupełnili Lori Linstruth (gitara) i Jesper Steverlinck (wokal). Wspólna praca tego progresywnego kwartetu przyniosła rewelacyjne owoce. Debiutancki krążek Guilt Machine pod tytułem On This Perfect Day to jeden z najlepszych debiutów tego roku!

On This Perfect Day zaczyna się wybornie, bo od najlepszego w przekroju całego materiału Twisted Coil. Utwór ten we wstępie emanuje mrokiem bezbłędnie wypracowanym elektronicznymi niuansami.

Muzycznie przypomina mi wiele ze słynnej EP-ki Ulvera (Silence Teaches You How To Sing).

Zresztą w pewnym momencie zespół mocno przyspiesza, a klimatu utworu podąża w kierunku… latynoskim? Tak, chyba tak można to określić, bo tak brzmiąca gitara pasuje mi do Ala Di Meoli z Elegant Gypsy. Jest temperamentnie. Utwór kończy piękne, heavy metalowe solo.

Season Of Denial zaczyna się mrocznie, z elektronicznymi przepchnięciami i psychodelicznym tłem. Owe zabiegi powstają na dwóch wyraźnie słyszalnych tempach. Guilt Machine znowu wytwarza atmosferę tajemnicy i mroku. Zespół znowu szaleje: krótkie solo, kilka perkusyjno-gitarowych wymian by utwór wyhamował na wspaniałej partii skrzypiec Bena Mathota, drugiego gościa zaproszonego do nagrywania płyty.

Nieco ponad sześciominutowy Over to wyważona dawka industrialowego patentu wepchniętgo pomiędzy progresywne widły. Prowadzą one ten utwór do ostatnich nut.

W nutach Guilt Machine słychać, że On This Perfect Day zmierza ku końcowi.

On This Perfect Day Arjena Lucassena i jego nowego projektu Guilt Machine to album wspaniały.

Nieomal.

Werdykt: 9+/10

Behold! You have come across something new! Something exciting and awesomeness-exuding! I present to

Behold!

You have come across something new! Something exciting and awesomeness-exuding! I present to you Abodean Skye, a progressive rock project that presents fantastic science fiction and fantasy stories through dramatic music featuring great singers and complex arrangements.

Abodean Skye is the offshoot of my first project Purity, born in the summer of 2008 and featuring singers Will Shaw and Cosmin Aionita, chosen from each side of the world, and mixed into an adventurous attempt at telling the story of an android races’ odyssey in the song “Flowerbloom”, retelling the original Elfquest journey through heavy progressive epic “The World of Two Moons” and critiquing stagnation and the sinister possibilities of the information age in “The Flaw of Man”.

Taking that 3-month affair to the next level, I have begun a project called Abodean Skye. I’ve been working on this music for almost a year now, writing the songs, recording, finding singers. The project is now about three-quarters of the way done, with four epic-length songs recorded. I have a dream of Abodean Skye becoming more than just a “band”. I would like to mix everything from written stories to drawn art, but with the music at the center of it all.

Cast

Vocals:

Bogdan Vera (Purity, Abodean Skye)

Will Shaw (Athem)

Cosmin Aionita (9.7 Richter)

Ashavari Joshi (New talent!)

Mike Gorham (Tomorrow’s Outlook)

Instruments:

Bogdan Vera (Guitar, Synthesizer, Programming, Bass, Flutes, other)

Diana Miron (Violin) (from the band Tiarra)

Stories

The album isn’t ready yet, but as I finish completion, I’d like to keep things updated, with samples and outtakes and ideas, and short stories, lyrics, etc.

The songs finished so far are:

The Dimming of The Day

The song features Will Shaw and Ashavari Joshi, and is about love and separation during times of war.

Enigmatic World

This song is inspired by the novel Ringworld by Larry Niven, and tells the story of an exploratory expedition on an alien space-borne monolith inhabited by primitive natives and lush with mysteries.

Desert Air

This song is very lightly inspired by the comic book series Elfquest (by Wendy and Richard Pini), and tells the story of a cold and emotionless being who loses his loved one to another, and finds himself trekking out into a burning desert, seeking death, only to find new life.

The Last Days

This song tells the story of how a human spacecraft carrying explorers returns to Earth in the 28th century only to find it ravaged by atomic fires and cold mechanical aliens.

Music

The music of Abodean Skye is a combination of cold, analog electronica, progressive rock, heavy metal and folk. Adding to this, Abodean Skye is also influenced by an elusive genre called filk, which mixes folk music with science fiction themes.

The songs go through varied atmospheres, from almost death metal-like to serene and almost silent to thick and crushing synthesizers to folksy acoustic guitar. They quickly go through emotions from happy to depressing to glorious (how can it not sound glorious with the Korg M1’s beautiful brass?).

The influences you are bound to encounter vary from Pink Floyd’s harmonies, to Jean Michel-Jarre, Vangelis’ and Tangerine Dream’s pulsing synthesizers to Opeth’s crushing riffage. Overall, it will be impossible to tell what decade of rock the music belongs to, because it grooves like the 60’s, pulsates like the 70’s, rocks like the 80’s, gets dramatic like the 90’s and crushes like the 00’s!

Questions

Q: When is the album going to be released?

A: When it’s done, hopefully this Winter, but you don’t have to wait, there will be musical samples and stories and maybe even collaborations, as well as tutorials and sneak peaks into production.

Q: Is it any good?

A: Probably. See, every kid with a computer can make a rock opera in his bedroom now, but this is more than just a part time hobby. This is something I have devoted a lot of my time and energy into, searching for quality singers and recording the complicated music (recording bass, guitar, drums and vocals for a pop rock track may be simple, but try 10 layers of synthesizers, filtered drums, 4 vocalists singing at the same time in counterpoint with different melodies and harmonizing guitars).

Q: Hey man, this reminds me of Avantasia, Ayreon and Andrew Lloyd Webber!

A: While all of those are influences (and GREAT MUSIC), and even though Abodean features multiple singers, the music is different, the influences are different and the ideas are different. The key point of Abodean Skye is the focus on telling stories reminiscent of hard sci-fi, while putting as little importance as possible on being commercial or “easy listening”. I’m not planning to make a living out of this (wouldn’t hurt though ). I’m studying Music and Audio Technology at Bournemouth University, to become a producer, so I hope to never have to commercialize Abodean Skye. Good music and stories are where it’s at.

Q: Why do you need a stupid blog for your band?

A: I’m going to use this as a public outlet, and if the project takes off, I want to mix in video, prose, poetry, drawn art, 3d art and music, where people can collaborate and come up with new ideas and basically feed their minds. Abodean Skye is not a “band” at all. I want it to be a community.

Q: Are you guys coming to *insert city here*?

A: Abodean doesn’t tour yet. Maybe some day, or with a side project.

Q: IT SUCKS!!!!

A: OH NOES!

Q: Oh my God, this is SO awesome!!!

A: YAAAY!

Q: What label is going to release Abodean’s album?

A: I don’t know yet. A label or two have already said they are interested, but as I said, I have no real interest in turning this into a regular band. I’d much rather just have it function as a website or community. That said, I’m not completely ruling out a label, it’s just too early to decide yet.

Q: tl;dr

A: OH NOES!!!

Q: Are you up for artistic/promotional collaboration?

A: Sure!

You can e-mail any ideas or suggestions at all to me at metabogy@yahoo.com. I’m really busy working on the album now but there’s plenty of time (assuming I don’t die suddenly in some terrible accident involving giant flying razor blades).

Grupo: Ayreon

Album: The Human Equation

John McManus -Flauta/Whistle

A continuación, describiré algunas de las canciones que, personalmente más me han gustado o llamado la atención: “Day Two: Isolation”, “Day Seven: Hope”, “Day Eight: School”, “Day Eleven: Love”, “Day Nineteen: Disclosure” y “Day Twenty: Confrontation”.

Day Seven: Hope: Tema positivo, no cabe duda.

“[Me] Yes I can, oh I will survive
Look at me…I’m alive”

Klar, man erreicht viele Leute. Dann kommt ja schon was Neues.

“Was hörst du so?” “Mir egal, was halt so im Radio läuft.” – Furchtbar!

Lebensjahr, also fast mein gesamtes Leben begleitet hat so viele Erinnerungen wieder wach rufen.

I was reading the topic on Further Light and Knowledge (The New Foyer, I think that’s it?) about what gives us Warm Fuzzies…where warm fuzzies presumably are supposed to mimic the burning in the bosom that is so cherished and sought after by members…but which can be elusive.

And you know…I think I have had such an experience of intense warm fuzzies…the closest thing I could consider a spiritual experience.

It wasn’t for the church, and it wasn’t related to anything religious at all, unfortunately for you all.

What was it for, then?

I still remember that title without having to think about it. Protip: make it couplets.

It was for a little known (at least, I think they should be a lot more well-known than they are) prog metal album and band…Ayreon’s 01011001.

Ayreon, I think, was my favorite band/collaboration for a long time (although I had an intense like for Coheed and Cambria…and I still must admit that Claudio’s music has just a really catchy driving nature to it that I fall for every time). Anyway, I got into the Ayreon scene rather late, I think…but 01011001 was the first album that I was really watching for the entire release process. I listened to the mystery singer samples, and guessed at what singers they could be (for each project, Arjen, the mastermind of Ayreon, invites several singers as part of the concept albums…so his projects include people who are known in their own rights). In the end, that endeavor was futile for me, because I am not a good prog metal fan — instead of getting into Ayreon after hearing that x or y singer was on it, I often only got interested in x or y singer after hearing their contribution on an Ayreon album.

Well, anyway, when I was able to get that album…that was a magical and powerful experience. It was like, the best week in my life. Really, it’s kinda embarrassing to admit now, but I listened to that album upwards of 80 times in a row over the weekend and following week I had gotten it (Ok, I admit I’m a cheater; I didn’t go all the way through the nearly two hour double-cd album each time…I had favorite songs I abused)…my roommate thought I was really weird too, I bet, since I’ve never been a fan of closed headphones.

Even after the weekend, I think I listened to the album exclusively for quite a while…and I could see no wrong in that album. A++++. Best album ever, or so I thought. I worked to decode every message, work out the entire Ayreon mythos through all the old albums, work out all of the references, etc., etc., It was amazing. I was inspired.

Some reviews came out on progarchives…and I was kinda shocked that it wasn’t getting as good reviews as, say, The Human Equation (another album by Ayreon) had gotten. And some of the reviewers, also Ayreonauts, were finding real flaws in the album. I was shocked. How could that be?

…eventually too, my honeymoon with the album came to a close. I wouldn’t say I burned myself on the album (I don’t burn myself out on albums — you may think listening to an album exclusively for a time is asking for trouble, but that’s actually how my music tastes have worked for a while. I find an album, listen to it exclusively, and when I find a new album, I do the same. I don’t necessarily start disliking old albums…I just rarely find time to listen to those albums when I get a new one.)

Eventually, I began to realize what the reviewers were talking about. Yeah, 01 was a bit flawed. And now, even I recognize it isn’t my favorite Ayreon album (I like The Human Equation and Into the Electric Castle best, now.)

So, I was thinking…if I could have that kind of experience (which I bet some believers most certainly do)…dang…sign me UP.

But with relation to the church, I only had an amazing experience (yet it was much much much less amazing than the musical magic I have just described…and in many ways, the two don’t even deserve to be mentioned in the same breath) upon the realization that I do not have to be in the church. It was something I had honestly never considered, and the idea was so liberating.

I don’t say that just to conclude: “nwe he he i dislike the church.” Rather, the amazing concept — which I think members and exmembers and nonmembers all should get (so I guess I lied about my one thing from the Mormon Matters post), was this: if you go to church, make sure it’s on your conditions. Leave at any time, and go back at any time. If you want to commit, make sure it is YOUR decision, not your parents’, not your bishop’s, not even GOD’s. Because if you put yourself first (even if your ultimate choice is to lose yourself to gain yourself in Christ [or insert your equivalent here]), the no matter what your choice is, you will be able to appreciate it (and yourself) that much better. I reiterate — don’t think I’m saying just be a selfish so n’ so. No, rather, even the act of selflessness garners so respect because it recognizes that a person will personally value himself. So if he can take his most valued possession — himself — and commit that elsewhere, that is a great thing indeed.

So I recognize (as I probably have elsewhere on this blog), that if I go back to the church, or if I go elsewhere, this kind of knowledge that I am on my own terms will keep me satisfied, motivated, and energized, no matter what.

So there. Don’t say I was totally terrible.

Artist: Star One
Title: Space Metal
Year: 2002

This album I believe was the first I heard by the Dutch multiinstrumentalist Arjen Anthony Lucassen. In my opinion it is a pretty good place to start. The music can be describe as melodic and straightforward metal with its roots in the 1970s.

Nearly all the songs are based on science fiction movies situated in space and for some that might sound a little corny and be a turn off… But if you like heavy rock this might be an album for you.

The album features some very heavy guitarriffs and spacey keyboards all backed up by some thunderous and very impressive drumming from Ed Warby, Lucassen’s drummer of choice for the last years.

After having listened to this album for a while I bought some of the other releases from Lucasen. He has produced some incredible progressive rock under the name Ayreon and I can recommend anyone of them.

The Star One project features some very impressive vocal contributions from the singers Russell Allen, Dan Swanö, Damian Wilson, Robert Soeterboek and Floor Jansen.

If you like your rock heavy and your science fiction, you can check which movies were used as inspiration for the different songs go here.

Album of Choice: Space Metal- Star One

Why, hello there, blogging world! I’ve decided to try my hand at the “blog” experience once more. I’m even trying to do it daily and have it chock-full of randomness! Today’s piece is about Arjen Anthony Lucassen’s Star One!

If you have never heard of Arjen, shame on you! No, it’s alright. Arjen is a Dutch metal artist whose projects sometimes get a little, well literally spacey. Especially with Star One, where each and every track is based on a different science-fiction movie! It’s really fun to listen to Space Metal trying to guess the movies. I got more than half of them right. Well, how about we start from the beginning?

Track One- Lift-Off: An instrumental track based on no movie. It is very ambient and, well, spacey. A perfect mood-setter!

Track Two- Set Your Controls: The PERFECT intro to an album about sci-fi. Very metal-y with all the vocalists displaying their talents. Alright, I’ll say it now- I’m a Damian Wilson fangirl, so that is the second thing that compelled me to purchase this.

Track Three- High Moon: …damn. I forget what this one is based off of. So anyways, Russell Allen’s voice to me is especially good in this track. And it really is a neat song. If only I could remember what movie it was from…

Track Four- Songs of the Ocean: Based off of Star Trek 4, I LOVE the beginning of this one, being all sonar-y, and then going into the music, and then fading back to sonar before the next track.

Track Five- Master of Darkness: STAR WARS SONG! You can tell this one immediately, but the real tip-off is at the line. “I am your destiny/You know it to be true/I cannot kill you, my son.” umm… yeah. Very Star Wars.

Track Six- The Eye of Ra: Another song I could guess immediately. This one is based off of the Stargate movie. Typical Star One fare, until the beautiful a-capella harmony at the end. I got shivers listening to it! If on a stereo system, turn it all the way up!

Track Seven- Sandrider: Based off of Dune, this is my little brother’s favorite song on the album. We both like the kind of arabian-esque noting they give this one, and I remember trying to write a Zelda fanfic with this song. I got halfway through it before losing interest.

Track Eight- Perfect Survivor: This one took a little research before I found it was based off of Alien. Honestly, if I had to skip over any of these tracks, this would be the one. Not because it’s a bad song, but because I like the next song SOO much more.

Track Nine- Intergalactic Space Crusaders: OH MY GAWD, I LOVE THIS SONG! Based off the British series Blakes 7, this song hold a special place in my heart. Mostly because it helped me discover my new favorite show, but also because I consider it Damian’s best and Russell’s second best performance on the disc. I suggest finding the version on the Live on Earth disc, though. It has much more emotion in it. I must say though, Arjen and the vocalists did a great job at capturing the essence of four seasons of Sci-Fi in one song!

Track Ten- Starchild: The PERFECT ending song. It’s really beautiful, with Russell’s best performance at the end. AMAZING ad-libbing. A very powerful piece, that also gives shivers once you get to the end.

Altogether, this is one of my favorite albums of all time, and it’ll take something really big to knock it off. Maybe Arjen’s next project will do it, but I doubt it. According to a friend who has been talking to Arjen, there most likely will not be a second Star One project, because of his fear of sequels not being as good. I suggest calling it Star Two, just to make it a little different. If you can find this album, I really suggest listening to it. It’s a great start to anything Arjen!
