The Los Angeles City College, Upward Bound Program will be having its First-Ever Art Exhibit to show

The Los Angeles City College, Upward Bound Program will be having its First-Ever Art Exhibit to showcase the art work students have worked on over the last several years as part of cultural awareness and art instruction curriculum. Starting in the Fall of 2006, our students have explored their own cultural heritage, then embarked on various art projects incorporating different media as a way to express themselves. The resulting art pieces have been amazing. From painted clay masks, to a reinterpretation of the Aztec Calendar, to the larger than life Alebrije (an imaginary creature conjured up in a traditional Oaxacan folk art form), our program participants have completed some awesome pieces.

You are cordially invited to Upward Bound’s first-ever Art Exhibition on the evening of this Thursday, February 4, 2010 in the DaVinci Gallery on the LACC campus.

The Gallery will be open for early viewing starting at 1:00 pm. The formal presentation and spoken word performance will begin at 6:00 pm.

Please join us for an evening of art and culture as we celebrate our students’ efforts as they explore and express themselves through art and literature.

ATTENTION: UB Alumni who participated in any of the past art projects such as masks and the Aztec Calendar pillars are strongly encouraged to attend this event to appreciate your work and share your experience with the audience on the making, development and accomplishment of these amazing and beautiful art pieces.

Hope to see you here.

It is a known fact that the most powerful kings in history consulted their wizards before making any

It is a known fact that the most powerful kings in history consulted their wizards before making any major decision. Humans have always looked at the stars to find out their future. There has been evidence in the past, of people looking at the stars, in order to know their future. This has been the most noticeable in the Greek, Chinese, and Aztec civilisations.

The influence of star signs, horoscopes, birth signs and astrology on people’s lives, is increasing by the day. Whenever they have a problem they turn to stars in order to find answers to their problems. There are many celebrity fans, that read their favourite celebrity horoscopes, to try and identify what will happen in the future. However, for every person that believes in power of their stars, there are many others who believe there is no scientific proof whatsoever in this method of telling the future.

Many people that don’t believe in horoscopes are of this opinion, because they don’t see reputable results in their findings. For instance, there are many websites that claim to give accurate readings on celebrity horoscopes, however there are not too many websites that are able to correctly tell the future of a celebrity. Many skeptics consider these websites as a complete waste of time, as their readings never come true.

These skeptics need to realise that horoscopes predict, based on certain assumptions. At times, these assumptions could be wrong, which could impact on the readings of the horoscope. Many people who read their horoscope daily feel there is some truth in them.

There are many people who read their horoscopes daily in newspapers or on websites. There are others who receive their daily horoscopes in their e-mail without having to pay for it. Some people also pay to receive their complete horoscope in their e-mail every day. Most people believe that a complete horoscope is accurate and therefore they don’t mind paying for it.

People have the tendency to dismiss anything that does not concern them and will often ignore predictions that talk negatively about their future. However, when the person receives good news, they become happy at the prospect of something good happening to them. It is human nature to accept facts and predictions that are in their best interests and deny those predictions that are negative or not to our liking. Despite these flaws, many people still prefer reading their horoscope in the hope of positive predictions.

There are many people who are strong believers in horoscopes. These people can often be so extreme that they won’t even enter a relationship unless they spend a few hours checking if their horoscopes match and are compatible. When people obtain confirmation that they are compatible, they are reassured that their relationship is secured and they will spend less time worrying about their future. Once they are assured of a secured future these people may then try to examine their various compatibility aspects, such as likes, dislikes, goals, faults and all the other factors that could have an impact on their relationship.

Today there are millions of people who get free horoscopes emailed daily, that can help them make decisions that could affect their future.

This time I’m going to start relating what 2012 is and how it will affect us, the human race, and the planet we’re riding on.
OK, let’s start with the basic astrophysics of it. On Dec.21,2012 the Earth and its sister planets will come into alignment with the Galactic center. A full allignment happens only about every 26,000 years and signifies the movement of the Sun from one astrological sign to another. In this case it will enter the sign of Aquarius.

First if you’re expecting earthquakes, plagues, rivers of blood, ect….well prepare to be disappointed.

You see on 12/21/2012, the Mayan calendar comes to an end. Now the Mayan calendar is a cyclical one. It starts on 1Reed, moves through its sub-cycles untill 1Reed arrives again. This has happened 4 times and is about to happen again. The 5th world will end and the 6th world will start.

More to come anon.

As we’ve been traveling around, we’ve been running into a lot of fear and anxiety concerned with 2012. It seems like a good time to set the record straight and give you better information about the coming milestone.

Keep an eye on this space for Starwolf’s introduction to 2012.

And keep calm. Things are going to be fine .

I also hear that it predicted the world trade centers being attacked. Personally i have no belief in this Calendar. I’m a Christan i think God will come for his people when he’s ready. Not some kind of Virus or Alien attack or Nuke bomb. I think we will just vanish and where we end up is solely where our hearts were at? Now theres a lot of speculation about this Calendar, so if someone has a site they can show then i’m going to remain a unbeliever of the Aztec Calendar. Give me your feedback.

Mandalas: The art of centering

“There exists no circle in the world which is not made from within a single point which is located in the center…and this point, which is located in the center, receives all the light, illuminates the body, and all is enlightened.” From the Zohar

Mandala is a Sanskrit word for circle or wheel that signifies beginnings with no ends. The variations of patterns are endless, but each has a specific center, and concentric rings that emanate from that center. Every culture and spiritual practice has their own representation of the circle, evident in their art, architecture and rituals. In ancient Britain the Druids told time and performed rituals within their circles of large boulders. The circular Aztec calendar was also a time keeping device as well as a vehicle for religious expression. The 12th century Christian nun Hildegard von Bigen created mandalas to express her visions and beliefs. The mandala is a recurrent Christian image: the rosary, halo, Celtic cross, crown of thorns, rose windows, floor of Chartres Cathedral and more. In Islam the entire building of the mosque becomes a mandala as the dome of the roof represents the arch of the heavens and turns the worshippers’ atttention towards Allah. The Star of David is a Hebrew spiritual symbol. Natives of North America create and use medicine wheels and dream catchers. Navajo Indians spend days or weeks creating sand mandalas. Indigenous Australians have bora rings, and the Amish have hex signs on their barns. Some cultures regard the mandala as an eye of God, or of the Goddess.

Zen Buddhist monks also spend days or weeks creating a sand mandala, only to sweep it up and disperse it into flowing water, to demonstrate the impermanence of life. According to Buddhist scripture sand mandalas transmit positive energy to the environment and to the people who view them, even after they are swept away. The circle with a center pattern is the basic structure of nature, from the smallest molecule to the conceptual circles of family, friends and community, to the seeming endless Milky Way galaxy.

Psychotherapist Carl Jung created mandalas for his own growth and with his patients and said that a mandala symbolizes “a safe refuge of inner reconciliation and wholeness.” Whatever your belief systems are, creating your own mandala design, or coloring one, lets you express yourself. Flowers, rings found in tree trunks, and snowflakes can be your inspiration. The act of creating the mandala – with crayons, markers, paint, collage or stones — is relaxing and centering. When you have completed it, look at what you have created. Notice where your eyes land, and where they travel. Then go to the center of the mandala and focus on it as you become aware of your own center.

There is a curious practice of going by a different clock in Teotitlan del Valle. For years, now, I

There is a curious practice of going by a different clock in Teotitlan del Valle. For years, now, I have never understood why the village is one hour ahead or behind Oaxaca city, 30 minutes away. Village time is regulated by the Zapotec committee that administers village life. I just asked Stephen, Do you remember whether Teo is an hour ahead or an hour behind Oaxaca? It’s too confusing, he said, all I know is Oaxaca is an hour behind us on the east coast. If this sounds confusing to you, you now know our experience of sorting out whether the time we are to meet someone is Teo or Oaxaca “time” and why people are always late … or early. The confusion, I am learning, may be intentional. After all, every Zapotec in Teotitlan knows what time it is.

Earl Shorris, author of The Life and Times of Mexico (as well as Latinos and In the Language of Kings), discusses the importance of time in Mexica or Aztec and Mayan civilization as part of indigenous identity and culture. Time is more than the clock. It represents who interprets the meaning of the world and life according to ancient traditions. It represents power and independence. The Maya notion (and that of the Zapotecs and later Aztecs) of existence itself relates to the calendars. Time is also the symbolic tension and conflict between the conqueror and the oppressed, the ancient pre-Hispanic rites interpreted by shaman or the new religion imported by the Spanish Catholic Church. The masters of Zero long before it occurred to the Europeans, complex astronomy, and mathematics, had been conquered. Shorris tells us that the glorious accomplishments of Mesoamerica are embedded in the ancient practices that continue in subtle ways as sub-text to modern life, and drives the undercurrent of indigenous beliefs and practices.

I came to understand by reading this book that Teotitlan del Valle in the Valley of Oaxaca maintains its own time, I believe, as a way to defeat the European world and the Gregorian calendar, to pass the word that the war for time and power is not over. Who owns time, who interprets the sun, the moon and the stars, owns the world. It had been that way in Mesoamerica for thousands of years.

Here is the site: www.earthfiles.com . If we ever needed proof that crop circles are not man made this has to be it. To have them all appear in England in April 2009 is significant also.

The investigators of the symbolism of the crop circles are seeing similarities with Mayan and Aztec Calendar symbology. As we get closer and closer to 12/21/2012 we are going to see more and more phenomenon that will be quite mind blowing I’m sure. It is time to keep our eyes (third eye preferably) and ears (intuition) open, and antenae up.

Also on this site there is info on the hole(s) in the magnetosphere exposing us to deadly radiation if there are sun spots; which there are none at present…thank goodness! You can check the sun spot issue on NASA.gov site which shows up as a link on www.earthfiles.com.

The point of all this activity is not so much about the ending of the world, but more about the beginning of a new one with a much higher consciousness taking precendence over the lower materialistic consciousness (or unconsciousness). The increase in more advanced crop circles could be a signal we are maturing enough to meet our neighbors in the near future. They are, afterall, sending us engraved invitiations to the party.

I don’t know about you, but I’m getting ready to wear my “party pants”. Can you see it?

Today there was almost a teensy stoush at my office… a handful of us working the two and a half days til New Year’s Eve, with only my good self representing the female quotient. The boys – keeping tabs on the cricket.

I made the error of stating my opinion – I don’t think cricket is actually a sport – partly in jest, part seriously… which earned the wrath of certain geeky developer types… how dare I denigrate one of their sacred cows?

Is sport a religion? In Australia, possibly so!

Which morphed into a ridiculous conversation on definitions, general consensus, labels, logic and meanings… as I purposely steered towards the whacky, the offended were determined to take issue.

Whoops, just slipped beneath the radar of ‘accepted’ reality for a moment there folks! Wrong audience, yeah, wrong audience…

Oh, and apparently Paris Hilton dropped by for a spot of shopping – Chapel Street is an uppity shopping zone – I missed the whole thing. Yawn…

If there’s anything I’ve learned from the past few years in recovery, as well as from my yogic studies… one person’s definition of anything is not another’s.

And whilst some may accuse me of dogma, that is their right. But – that does not make them right. And – at the exact same time, nor am I, for that matter. Stick that in yer pipe!!

What matters… is seeing reality as it really is. Not as easy as it sounds, slippery varmint…

I backed away from today’s is-cricket-a-sport-or-isn’t-it debate, knowing full well it could’ve become unpleasant.

Not because I’m incapable of holding my own intellectually. But emotionally, I’m in no place for a battle where unpleasantness is included.

Of course, it wouldn’t look like that to others. But I’m not explaining myself… and so the great divide of reality reveals itself, in part.

If you look close enough.

Who says everything has to make sense, anyway?

Get used to contradictions and accept both positions, a wise man once told me.

Then, if any-thing that’s without is also within, who am I to argue?

I’m turning, the year is whirring, there’s a buzz in the air. Magic’s happening, transforming, time returning to itself. Tendrilly strands float lightly – some forwards, others back. Yet all is here and now, anyways… so, what to do with that? There’s a pace, slightly speedier than a meaningful stroll to complete important chores…

I see now, where I am… it’s not so much where I’ve been, but that which remains… still real in some way. The apparitions fade as the year drains away; dying moments wafting like fragrant incense. But mostly… no longer here.

No, I don’t know what I’ll say tomorrow for the most part, or the next day. I purposely hold off from planning it out. Therein lays the excitement… possibility… potential.

I want it to be real, not imagined or rehearsed. My opening lines may sputter before natural brilliance is revealed, but then, you’re seeing me as I am. Without the greasepaint. No costumes.

Oh sure, there are bigger plans afoot, the constellations by which I navigate my course, now that I have a future again… if I ever did, if I have a say at all (I’ve sometimes doubted that), and assuming that gypsy curse ever has a use-by date.

~Svasti
