Download this driver and transfer it with a USB or boot up into another OS on your multiboot and save it in the BT root folder from here.

Untar it:

tar -xvzf hybrid-portsrc-x86_32-v5_10_91_9-3.tar.gz

makefile:
make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=`pwd`

Insert the modules:
modprobe ieee80211_crypt_tkip
insmod wl.ko

Now you should have the network Claimed. you can check by:
lshw -C network

Bring it up:
ifconfig eth1 up

To load the module upon boot:

cp wl.ko /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/net/wireless
depmod -a
modprobe wl

Load the module at every startup:
kate /etc/modules

add the following and close the text editor:
ieee80211_crypt_tkip
wl

Load NetworkManager and Configure KnetworkManager:
Type NetworkManager in a konsole and configure the wireless at the bottom right.

Delete the files you created in the root folder now that you dont need them.

We got a surprise visit last night from the trucking fairy who dropped off a few palettes of the new Velocity B43’s. This is the first time we’ve seen them and they look great. It’s 43mm deep and triple walled to give it tons of strength. We’ve got 13 different colors options so I’m sure we’ll have what your looking for. Here’s a few pictures. Eccoci, questa è la prima rogna. avendo una scheda wireless broadcom b4311 (della malefica serie b43xx) ho la necessità di installare un firmware che attivi la scheda e che non è distribuito con le normali distro gnu/linux in quanto proprietario. fatto ciò navigherò utilizzando i moduli b43 e b43legacy, con i quali però la connessione va a momenti ed è molto lenta. quindi li sostituirò con i driver broadcom sta linux che mi faranno viaggiare a velocità smodata, proprio come su ubuntu. se avessi una scheda che già funziona (il led, se c’è, si accende) sarebbe bastato andare qui.

su linuxwireless è spiegato come risolvere il problema, inserendo il firmware per i b43 (occorre una connessione attiva, oppure scaricarsi prima i due file indicati da wget e metterseli in una cartella sul Desktop)

ora ci sarebbe da configurare i file /etc/rc.d/init.conf e /etc/wpa_supplicant, ma dopo diversi tentativi a vuoto ho optato per installare il software wicd che altro non è che un’interfaccia grafica per fare il collegamento con la rete e si occupa di fare i settaggi al posto nostro. basta scaricare il pacchetto da un qualunque mirror che metta a disposizione gli extra di slackware (come questo) e poi

installpkg nome_del_pacchetto

ora basta riavviare (non mi ricordo infatti il comando per lanciare wicd, che però si attiverà subito riavviando), cercare wicd nei programmi per internet, lanciare il programma, scegliere la rete, settare nelle preferenze (c’è una piccola linguetta a fianco del nome della rete) la nostra password e flaggare l’opzione per avviarla quando accendete il pc.

se si riscontrano errori, controllare in centro di controllo–> configurazioni reti e abilitare l’interfaccia wlan0 (oppure da riga di comando iwconfg wlan0 up)

resta ancora un passo, perché il computer continua a usare i moduli b43 3 b43legacy, nonostante li abbia messi in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist. in pratica dovrebbe usare il modulo wl.ko creato utilizzando le istruzioni della broadcom, seguendo le quali però a un certo punto si dovrebbe dare depmod, comando però deprecato, e poi modprobe wl, solo che a quel punto non trova wl. questo devo ancora risolverlo.

I don’t need to go to school anymore for 8 weeks, so I thought I’d upgrade my Jaunty to the fresh Karmic Koala alpha2. The upgrade went flawless, the system booted and I was thrilled how steady this alpha is. I haven’t had much time to discover any changes or new features, but I will keep editing this post if I notice any new ones. So far I have noticed:

• The speed of my Broadcom B4306 has increased dramatically. Using the b43 and b43-legacy drivers in Jaunty, Network Manager detected a speed of 1 MB/s. Now, it has increased to a proper 54 MB/s.
• The kernel kept trying to read my floppy device. Since I don’t use it, I added a “blacklist floppy” line to the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist file that fixed the problem.
• The progress bar of OpenOffice 3.0 has turned red instead of blue.
• Amarok has a new cool splash screen.
• gFTP uses GNOME icons instead of Human icons. (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gftp/+bug/390715)

In Supply yesterday I came across this monstrosity – recently emerged from the Deus workshop.
Yet to see anyone else claim to be the first in Australia to have built up this wheel so until I’m corrected, I’m handing the title over to Saxon.

A few months ago I installed Ubuntu (8.04 Hardy Heron) on my Compaq Presario V2000 laptop. The install went pretty well, except that wifi didn’t work.  It turned out that my laptop had a Broadcom BCM4318 wifi card which has a proprietary driver. So it required some extra steps to get going.  I scanned the internet for a bit and found that it ended up being pretty simple.  Note that I had ethernet connected so I would have access to the internet.

apt-get install b43-fwcutter

After installing I gave it a reboot (probably not strictly necessary but Windows has conditioned me this way) and my wifi LED lit up!  A bit of setup to connect to my router and I was back on wireless!

Unfortunately I didn’t have enough time to get everything set up that my wife would need (mostly an iTunes replacement and streaming video in firefox) so I ended up putting WInXP back on.  I didn’t see enough of a performance improvement to justify the time it would take.  Maybe later though… If so I will put a more full install guide on here.
