TOFFPOX: Prudence! What kind of person drinks rum? PRUDENCE: …A person who wants to get drunk?

TOFFPOX: Prudence! What kind of person drinks rum?
PRUDENCE: …A person who wants to get drunk?
TOFFPOX: No! Yes! I mean – what sort of rogue is usually associated with rum?
PRUDENCE: …Johnny Depp?
TOFFPOX: …Who?
PRUDENCE: Johnny Depp, the local barman.
TOFFPOX: (disdainfully) “Johnny Depp, the local barman”?
PRUDENCE: Yes – well, if you told me to say the first thing that comes into my head when you say “rum”, I would say “Johnny Depp”, because he’s the local barman, and serves alcohol, including rum, so, yes, he’s the sort of rogue that I would associate with –
TOFFPOX: No, no, Prudence, you’re missing my point –
PRUDENCE: Which is?
TOFFPOX: Pirates! Pirates drink rum!
PRUDENCE: …And?
TOFFPOX: We could dress up as pirates and run away to sea!

First night of Fairytale Shorts – ten minute fairytale adaptations/devised pieces performed by the uni’s drama society – went well. My short, “Scurvy Curs: A Delightful Tale of Whimsy”, about two ladies who seek adventure as a badly-disguised male pirate and a parrot named Nobstradamus, went down well. I am extremely pleased with the audience’s reaction to the whole thing. Pirates having an orgy to the tunes of “Love Shack”, a maid with a feather duster wound into a coathanger and worn as a headdress and the crew dancing around the stage to “Why Is The Rum Gone?” seem to go down well with people my age and older, which excites me. I’m glad I wasn’t just writing stuff that I thought was hysterically funny and alienated everybody else. AND they laughed a lot at my character, which I suspect is because of the highly nasal voice and the glasses perched on the end of my nose. I love Bluster. She’s insane.

COCKSWAIN: Do ye swear by the sword that ye really be a scurvy cur and yer true callin’ be to run through bluejackets and lobsters?
BLUSTER: Are you averse to killing naval officers of any sort?
TOFFPOX: No.
BLUSTER: No.
COCKSWAIN: And be ye true to the sweet trade until ye find yeself in Davy Jones’s locker?
BLUSTER: Will you be a pirate until you cop it?
TOFFPOX: …I suppose so.
BLUSTER: Yes.

Second and final night of the performance tonight. I had a nightmare that I was forced to rewrite the entire thing and everything fell apart on the night, and I’m glad that’s not the case. (I guess now that I’ve written that, half my cast is going to fall ill or break body parts. I hope not.)

In other, more academically-focused news, I got the same mark in both my first essays for this year: THREE MARKS short of a first. I started out on a trip of self-loathing once more, until my seminar tutor told me that actually, it’s really good at this stage, and next time I can work towards a first. I am very happy indeed. I got a couple of firsts last year, which don’t count towards my degree mark, but I hope to repeat the performance again. It’s very odd. I’m used to A*s in all my English pieces of work, so not getting a first kind of equated to getting a B. You won’t really appreciate this until you know that, consistently throughout my school life, I have been achieving among the highest marks in the year in everything to do with English. It was that one subject that I never ever really tried hard at but enjoyed and got high marks in anyway. Science and Maths? Bollocks to them.

I leave you with this most important moral message from my play:
BLUSTER: And disregarding the danger of STDs, they all lived happily ever after. Remember girls, you CAN do anything, but you WILL end up as a sexual object anyway!

Clear skies prevailed overhead, but underfoot the trodden earth remained in a state of mud. Indicative of the diversity of the Austin music scene, the day progressed from dance pop to Texas rock to country to hip-hop-jam-band fusion to pure grunge rock.

The day began with the light-hearted dance pop of the Atlanta-based group the The B-52’s.
From the pop of the 1980s and 199s I transitioned to the alternative and grunge rock sounds of the North Texas-based rock band The Toadies. The sounds of the rock music of the 1990s and 2000s elicits memories about my teenage years. Pearl Jam’s music making and song writing have stayed crisp and hard hitting.
”Go” and then
”Red Mosquito” featuring special guest Ben Harper on pedal steel kept the crowd in a constant state of awe.
The hard rockin’ continued with “Do The Evolution” and The Who cover with
”The Real Me.”

Above: Sunday evening found me and Tracie B tattered by the rain and mud at the Austin City Limits musical festival but warm and happy at the dinner table of the inimitable Bill Head — Austinite bon vivant and all-around good fellow. Bill made a wonderful ragù alla bolognese and so I brought along a bottle of Lini Lambrusco (in this case, Lambrusco di Sorbara). As restaurateur Danny Meyer likes to say, “if it grows with it, it goes with it.”

If you happen to find yourself near a computer this afternoon at 3 p.m. (Texas time), please check out a live chat that I will be doing today with Austin American-Statesman social columnist Michael Barnes at Out and About (Austin360.com).

Above: We were also joined Sunday night by Austin natural treasure Mary Gordon Spence (to Bill’s left), writer, humorist, and radio personality, who had many wonderful tales to tell of her recent trip to Italy, and University of Texas professor of government David Edwards.

We’ll be chatting about the series of classes on Italian wine I’m teaching every Tuesday at The Austin Wine Merchant beginning this evening.

Tonight’s class is sold out and the others are filling up quickly but there is still some space available. My favorite session is Italian Wine and Civilization (Tuesday, November 10), where we read a passage from Italian literature or history, and then taste a wine in some way pertinent to the text. Did you know that Niccolò Machiavelli was a winemaker, for example?

In other news…

Tracie B and I braved the rain and mud at this year’s Austin City Limits festival on Sunday. We didn’t stay long but did get to catch the B52s’s set, which couldn’t be anything other than super fun, and we also enjoyed super-shiny sisters-and-brother bluegrass/country act Jypsi (below). Jypsi was a little slick for my taste but man can they play!

Just over a year ago, I came to Austin for the second time to visit with Tracie B. Do you remember? Here’s a little post from the archive. We recreated the Austin City Limits photo op this year, except for this time sans mustache!

I’m leaving for Las Vegas on Sunday!! It’s been almost six months since I started planni

I’m leaving for Las Vegas on Sunday!!

It’s been almost six months since I started planning this trip – mostly because I require that much time to scrape up the funds for stuff like this – and I can’t believe it’s almost here!

I’m nervous about going, food-wise.

I know that I’m on vacation and I know that I deserve a “break” from counting calories, but since this is a lifestyle change rather than a diet, I don’t feel like going away and having a food free for all. That’s not a lifestyle I really want to cultivate. I don’t want to be one of those people who come back from vacation and find I can’t get my jeans on.

Therefore, like everything else, I’ve got a plan. I really believe the only way to succeed at this lifestyle change thing is to always be prepared, just like a Girl Guide (or Scout for my readers from south of the border) and to have a plan.

The plan is thus:

Watch what I’m eating. No going overboard. Fruit, egg white omelets (if I can find them), cereal with skim milk for breakfasts. Lunch should be salads, soups or sandwiches. Drink lots of water throughout the day. TRY to avoid alcohol as much as possible. Eat a SENSIBLE dinner – avoid bad stuff like fried foods and tons of cheese.

I found a Weight Watchers close to the Vegas strip and I’m determined to do my weigh in on Tuesday like normal. I think it will help me keep on track.

I’m going to have a really great birthday dinner though. I made reservations at Mesa Grill and I plan to have an appetizer AND dessert! It only comes around once a year so I figure it’s worth it.

My hotel has a gym but I think I’ll be too busy to use it. I’m counting on walking tons every day while sightseeing and I’m hoping that will be enough exercise, in combination with sensible eating, to prevent a massive weight gain. I’m willing to fluctuate up a bit, but I really don’t want to gain more than five pounds while I’m away. I don’t think it would be so hard to gain a pound a day in a place called Sin City.

I have no idea what internet access will be available to me while I’m there and I’m not taking my laptop. I’m looking forward to having an “unplugged” vacation. If I spot a cafe, I’ll try to check in on Tuesday with my WW results. Otherwise, I’ll talk at you next Saturday!

Saturday night at Harper’s Ferry (7/25) brought out some great music from the local indie scene. Of course Freezepop rocked it; The New Collisions were fantastic on stage (see pictures) and Provocateur opened the night well. I was able to grab hold of Sarah and Scott Guild from the New Collisions before the show to ask them some quick questions about themselves, their music and their time in Boston. [Editorial note: The band was recently asked to open for Blondie, and to join the B52 for part of their east coast tour!]

Peter Gollands: So you guys aren’t from Boston originally. Why did you choose Boston as the place to begin your project?

Sarah Guild: Well we went to a music conference in Philly, not that we were living there, but happened to be there and we met some cool people from Boston and it seemed like a place to start. And we had contacts already, so we were psyched about that.

Peter Gollands: You did hear about WBCN closing its doors right?

Scott Guild: Yeah, yeah.

Sarah Guild: It’s a bummer.

Peter Gollands: Do you feel like that this is a good chance for the music scene to rise up out of it?

Scott Guild: I think what’s interesting is that the music industry isn’t necessarily based in Boston; most of that is L.A., Nashville or New York. But there’s a great chance, as a result, for people to make original, authentic music here that can go national. Bands like Freezepop, Passion Pit… But, because the industry machine isn’t here, there’s more room to become original.

Sarah Guild: I feel like there’s a lot of community in the Boston music scene. I think that it’s a good place to be nurtured.

Peter Gollands: How do you mean – community between bands?

Sarah Guild: Between bands. Bands come out to see each other all the time. We’re all promoting stuff together.

Scott Guild: And we’ve only been here playing for 6 or 7 months and everybody has been supportive and encouraging to try to help us move forward.

Peter Gollands: Well if you make good music, people are going to support you right?

Scott Guild: It’s more than that though. In some places you make good music…

Sarah Guild: And they hate you! (Laughs)

Scott Guild: (Also laughs) Yeah they try to hurt you. But it’s wonderful being here.

Peter Gollands: I’ve been hearing this more, but apparently Boston is infamous for concert goers just standing at shows with their arms crossed.

Scott Guild: I think a lot of it is that Boston music crowds are listening. A lot of times the people that come out will be standing there with their arms crossed for the whole show, and then come up to you afterwards and say “Hey that was a great set, man”. A lot of it is them coming out just to appreciate [the music].

Sarah Guild: I feel that because there are a lot of musicians in town – there’s Berkeley, and other music conservatories - that people know how to use their ears.

Peter Gollands: A lot of great bands come out of those schools.

Scott Guild: Yeah, this city is really filled with music.

Peter Gollands: Where do you see your music going from here?

Scott Guild: We’re really trying to take our music national. We’re doing a national tour and releasing our EP nationally in the fall. The whole movement of our band is trying to get out to as many people as possible. Things have taken off for us so much in Boston, we just feel like there’s this momentum behind us and we have to take advantage of it while we can.

Peter Gollands: It’s your fulltime job?

Scott Guild: Yeah we’re working 60-70 hours a week, practicing 3 times a week with the band.

Sarah Guild: Networking…

Peter Gollands: Are you networking with just bands? Or are you also looking at trying it with artists? I know you guys are interested in the art scene too.

Scott Guild: Tonight we’re working with a projection guy. We’re always interested in trying to connect as many different angles. Whenever we play shows now we like to have a DJ to end the night. This night is great because Freezepop put in one of our good friends Michael V, the DJ from the Pill. We’re trying to bring as many elements together to make live shows a big event.

Peter Gollands: So instead of making it a show, you’re trying to make it more of an experience?

Sarah Guild: Yeah, absolutely. It’s the live show that’s our focus. We’re definitely careful and intentional when we’re recording, but I feel like that’s not going to get us out there – everyone has an album, you know what I mean? You have to be good live.

One of Pennsylvania’s largest summer music festivals opens its doors to tons of waiting fans today, offering three special performances by The Commodores, Martin Sexton, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Musikfest has been happening in downtown Bethlehem for the past twenty five years now. It has brought many large acts from all across the country to the smallish town in Pennsylvania.

This year, the festival will feature 300 performers, including 10 nightly headlining shows. The concerts will take place on fourteen different stages, eleven of which are free. (Free is good.)

Here’s a quick run through of some of the headliners. You can find information on the rest of the bands performing on the lineup website. I would love to list them all for you, but then this post would never end.

The Commodores

Chris Isaak/The Wallflowers

Yes with special guest Asia

David Cook with Green River Ordinance

Third Eye Blind with Matt Nathanson

The B-52s/Joan Jett & the Blackhearts

Puddle of Mudd with special guest Stasis

Pat Benetar & Blondie with The Donnas

George Thorogood and the Destroyers with Jonny Lang

Crosby, Stills & Nash

You can see that the festival offers something for everyone. The musical tastes being provided are certainly eclectic to say the least. Each headliner (or two) will be performing one of the nine nights the festival runs.

It should be noted that the headliners cost some money. You can find tickets for each show here. But if you don’t feel like spending the money, there are still tons of free performers spread out all over Bethlehem. It might be quite nice to just walk around and take in the sights and sounds. There are also craft, art, and food vendors all over the place, too.

The whole town pretty much turns into one big music celebration. I recommend you join in the fun!

Get the low down at Musikfest.org.

The tour will go from outside Boston to Cape Cod and the Wolf Trap National Park in Virginia, one of the largest venues in the state.

Unusually, the band had no part in setting up the opportunity. They were unaware that they were even being considered.

“I was sitting on my couch and got a phone call from an unknown number,” says guitarist/songwriter Scott Guild. “I answered, and it was the William Morris Agency with an offer to tour with the B52s. I was expecting a telemarketer.”

“The B52s are one of our favorite bands from our favorite era of music,” says frontwoman Sarah Guild. “The fact that they found us is awesome.”

The New Collisions will be direct support for The B52s at The Cape Cod Melody Tent in Hyannis, MA, on Saturday, August 1; The South Shore Music Circus in Cohasset, MA, on Sunday, August 2; and Wolf Trap National Park (The Filene Center) in Vienna, VA, on Saturday, August 8.

“We work hard as a band, so this is a great surprise,” says Sarah. “It makes us really believe in what we’re doing.”

A couple of times now (here, here, & there) I have made mention of Governors Island. While I haven’t given too much information NYMag comes through this week with an entire comprehensive guide to the island, the happenings on the island, and why you should go to the island.

I am a bit of a hypocrite in that I haven’t been there myself, but I have made a list of 10 things/reasons I need to go & why you should too.

1. Free boat ride every hour to the island. Yes FREE. Thank you tax dollars!

2. Amazing views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, & Staten Jersey (they are basically one place right?)

3. FREE (you know how much I love free) Mini-Golf.

4. There are open grassy areas just like Central Park, but without the crowds.

5. FREE (yes free) concerts throughout the summer featuring artists like Mos Def & the B52’s (ie:read variety for all different people/age groups)

6. You can a)bring your bike or b) rent a bike! I can’t even rent a bike where I live in Brooklyn! There are about 200 singles (from $10 for one hour), as well as a few tandems (from $15 for one hour) and quads (from $20 for one hour). On Fridays rentals are FREE!

7. You can learn something. Who doesn’t love History?!? You can take a 45 minute tour of the island with a Park Ranger who will educate you on the fort & the island.

8. Go for the arts (ie: culture!) Creative Time presents Plot 09: This World and Nearer Ones. Creative Time commissions projects by over 20 major international artists, which will be installed across Governors Island this summer. Free and open to the public on June 27. For more information, visit www.creativetime.org

9. In historic “Building 408,” eight painters exhibit their watercolors and oil paintings made on- site, on Governors Island.

10. All summer there will be a sustainable cities summer lecture series by the CUNY institute. Check out the topics here.

I’m going to try and do a “top five things I’m into” with regards to fashion once a week. Here’s my first attempt.

1) Long silly necklaces. Etsy has some awesome ones.

2) Purple lipstick. By Mac Cosmetics, of course. Not the Lady Gaga lavender, more of a deep, dramatic purple.

creaaaamy

3) B-52’s Hair. As soon as I get my dreads unknotted, I am all over this style.

4) Lace or crocheted backs detailing. This is both a sweater dress and has a crocheted back, so its a double win.

5) Tim Gunn. I wish I had a mini-Tim in my closet, who would scrutinize my outfit in the mornings and tell me “Less is more. Make it work!”

So there you go, a random five obsessions for the week. Drop a comment with your top five if you want : )

Was wäre der Counterjihad ohne den irrlichternden Pop-Ork Aff-Affie? N-TV berichtet (1): “Gadd

Was wäre der Counterjihad ohne den irrlichternden Pop-Ork Aff-Affie? N-TV berichtet (1):

Turn your watch, turn your watch back,
about a hundred thousand years.
A hundred thousand years.

I’ll meet you by the third pyramid
I’ll meet you by the third pyramid
Ah come on, that’s what I want, we’ll meet
in Mesopotamia. oh oh oh

(We’re goin’ down to meet) I ain’t no student,
(Feel those vibrations) of ancient culture
(I know a neat excavation) Before I talk
I should read a book.
But there’s one thing I do know,
There’s a lot of ruins in Mesopotamia.

Six or eight thousand years ago
They laid down the law.
