Keith, Marlene and Sally are leaving tomorrow(Sunday). We had quite a party tonight. I saw people I know very well act in ways I never would have imagined. To put it mildly, it was a wild time of talking loud, laughing hysterically, playing euchre (badly on my part), and all around acting crazy. The Flying Screaming Monkey lent a truly bizarre twist to the evening. It was a gift to Marty from Keith and Mar and we had that thing flying everywhere. It’s a wonder we didn’t break anything. The monkey is about 10 inches long from outstretched arms to feet (plush and stuffed), has a black mask and cape and rubber bands in the arms. You put your fingers in the little pouches in the monkey’s hands, pull back on the legs and let ‘er rip like a slingshot. When the monkey lands it shrieks and laughs. I want one really bad. One of those toys that you’ve just gotta laugh at. There was some consumption of alcohol involved (eh-hem). And some stress relief from spending time with the parental units. But I think the monkey was a highlight (or was it the appletinis, bulldogs and wine?).

Mom has forgotten the Scottish grace* that she said at every gathering; she is pretty helpless in transferring from her wheelchair to the car. I don’t think I can do it alone anymore. I sure needed help tonight (pre-alcohol). I think she has forgotten how to push with her feet. We took them both out for TCBY and to see the Christmas lights in town. Then Keith and I sang to them and with them. Dad was so sweet, kind of humming along. I really want to get back to playing the guitar. I have no calluses now so it will have to hurt to start. But it really makes it easier to spend time with them, having something to do, something distracting. Mom demanded that we sing songs they knew so we sang some Christmas carols. Thank goodness Keith can pick out the chords pretty quickly. I was never good at just figuring out a song by ear on the guitar. I need the chords, man. Dad is diggin’ his new motorized chair but it seems he also needs more help with transfers. It almost seems it would be better not to have it but it hurts so much for him to move it would be cruel. There just comes a time when the body starts breaking down and there’s nothing anyone can do but try to ease the pain.

I have not been so loaded in a while. I hope I don’t feel bad tomorrow since I can’t take any NSAID-type drug (ibuprofen, naproxen or aspirin) for 2 weeks before my surgery and I PROMISED everyone I would show up for choir.

Sally and I sat outside smoking for a time and talked about the old days. Her family moved in next door when I was in about 5th grade. I practically lived at their house (next door) summers. All four sisters taking care of little Cha and the house. We hung out watching soaps and they did the washing and ironing and fixing dinner for the family. I just hung around. They were a second family for me, a haven from my own crazy household. Both of their parents worked. My mom didn’t, but she was a little nuts so we all (me and my sibs) avoided her and left her alone as much as possible.

It was so much fun seeing everyone cut loose tonight. Life has been so full of stress for all of us. I know my folks’ condition really gets to my brother. He comes down every few months and the changes in that time are pretty drastic. It’s so hard to watch. Even for Marty and me who are right here. Baby Boomers, how do you handle the slow demise of your parents? It would be far better for them to fall asleep one night and just not wake up. Since I don’t believe death is the end of a person, I don’t have a problem with it. I DO have a problem with physical suffering. I wish Rog and Mag were here. Then our family would be complete. We are rarely altogether anymore. And who can tell how much longer Mom and Dad will be with us?

I also dream of getting up to NY sometime in 2010. I miss my life in the Hudson Valley, I lived there longer than I lived anywhere. My friends there are my true family. I talked to Wiley and Eliza yesterday and they are so full of life and enthusiasm and brilliance and light. Kate and Leslie called me on T-day and that was great too. It makes me feel good to have contact with them and learn about what they are doing now. I also miss my friends and family in Niagara. When I next travel north I will have to travel from one end of the state to the other to see everyone. Guess I better get busy and get some sort of job where I can work anywhere on my laptop.

It seems amazing to me that in my short 3 1/3 years down here I have also formed some really close bonds. Keith commented on it today, saying “You are really good socially. The first time we had a party at Marty’s house when I was down here they were all your friends except one of Marty’s.” It’s true. My sister likes to spend a lot of time alone. And I love people. I love getting to know them, listening to their stories, finding connections. The only reason we had the party at her house was because I was still living with Mom and Dad. This time we spent most of our time at her house too. I mentioned it to Keith and he shrugged. I guess she would rather just stay home. Plus her neighbors came over and her house is bigger anyway. I have a little bitty kitchen table and not much room around it. It’s too cold to hang out on the porch. Tonight we were a little too rowdy for my neighborhood anyway.

Next post I want to go into the Alien part of my title: I was an alien in my family and I was a teenage alien. And now I have a really cool pin: a flying saucer with 3 dancing aliens dangling from the bottom. How can I put pictures in my blogs?

*Mom’s Scottish grace by Robbie Burns: “Some ha’e meat and canna eat, some hae none and want it, but we ha’e meat and we can eat so let the Lord be thank-ed”. She said something like ” some ha’ meat and some ha’ none” and then just kinda foundered off, mumbling. We all helped her say it. But later that night we talked about it and laughed hysterically. Is that wrong? Sometimes you just gotta laugh!!! Life is too short and too absurd to be taken seriously (I should listen to my own words.)

Today I met another kind of single senior. I’m staying with friends and their cousin visited overnight. He’s just a little older than me, but not anchored in today. Not that he has dementia. He’s just living in the past. He spoke about a month in Oxford as if it were a few years ago. He went in the 1970’s. I am loquacious enough to make conversation with a wall. But he had me stumped. At first I thought he was hard of hearing. When he did respond to a prompt, it was with a nonsequiter. Was he for real or a character cut out of Seinfeld? He did want to date but couldn’t find anyone in “his group.” I finally gathered that meant an Eastern European Jew, kind of a small pool when you’re already an odd person. He joined groups to meet people. He wondered why whenever he became friendly with a woman she disappeared or told him she was married. Even though he was very hard to be with, it was touching that he still wanted a special someone. And sad. What are the chances that such a person will meet a special someone? Most of the normal people I know have had a hard time doing that.

I survived my first CAT Scan with my body full of barium and a hot dye injection. I felt kind of spa

I survived my first CAT Scan with my body full of barium and a hot dye injection. I felt kind of spacey afterwards. Now I have to wait 24 to 48 hours for the results. It’s a little scary since I never expected cancer to begin with. I begin to wonder if my optimism is ill-founded. But I’m not gonna obsess over it. It wouldn’t be so bad if I died anyway. This life is tiring and hard (you know, life sucks and then you die). I don’t mean to be a downer, but I’m less afraid of dying than I am of living in pain or being disabled in some way or working another shitty job where I am not appreciated or able to be myself.
To reward myself for my courage I high-tailed it over to a bookstore with my 30% off coupon and bought 2 hilarious DVDs. “Juno” (I figure it is a business expense because the writing, especially the dialog is so excellent, it may inspire me to add more humor to this blog) and “Shawn of the Dead” (my second favorite horror flick after “American Werewolf in London”).
On returning to my car I was dismayed to see a long deep dent in the driver’s side door until I realized it wasn’t my car. I never had so much trouble locating my car in a parking lot until I got this silver one. I bet 50% of the cars in Florida are silver. It’s not a color I would have chosen myself but I’ve only purchased one car where I got to choose the color. That was my brand new Camry wagon back in 1990something. It was a beautiful dark forest green. I finally had to sell it at about 250,000 miles and buy a used car (dark gray) just before I graduated from college and my spousal support ran out (Beau had agreed to support me until I got my degree). That gray camry let me down at only 105,000 miles by throwing a rod just a couple of months ago. I’m lucky I had the means (credit) to go out and buy another used camry the same day. Hope this one lasts more like the Green Wagon.
That wagon went all over the country with me (it took me to Roswell) and also carried a lot of joyously noisy children around in it. It had a third seat which faced backward and the kids that got to sit there would alert me if I was being followed. We would ride around making noises like “Rotten Island” one of William Steig’s wonderful children’s books. We sounded like an overcrowded jungle. Then Sascha would sing in a high sweet melodious voice , “Faaaarrt yoooourr heeeaaad offff” over and over, a song she had written herself.
Well, no kids ride around in this silver job, but I play Ozomatli at top volume and love to ride with the sunroof wide open on cool days. This is my first sunroof and my first keyless entry car though I always use the key anyway. I don’t like to get too dependent on electronic gadgetry. Besides, I keep setting off one button or another when the keys are in my pocket. Tonight it was the panic button. Monica and I were hanging out talking and I hear a car horn honking. I said, “Is that your car?” and she laughed, “no, it’s yours!”. Yep, keys in my pocket.
Today I dared to tell Monica “Come on over and we’ll see if I can figure out this fax thing on my printer.” It involved removing a LOT of papers from the kitchen table, moving the printer into the kitchen (the only phone jack in the house) and hooking it all up. I feel very good that it was successful. Now I know I can send faxes if I want to and if I’m willing to cart the printer out of the studio and hook it up in the kitchen. I wonder how long phone cords come? Maybe I could get one that would reach and just hook it up when I need it. I also called Charlotte today. She called back but got my voicemail so we’re officially playing phone tag now. I just left her another vm. Okay, goodnight.

Nightowl Ruminations-11/10/09 first blog entry It just occurred to me, does that word, ruminations

Nightowl Ruminations-11/10/09 first blog entry

It just occurred to me, does that word, ruminations come from the work of 13th century poet, Rumi? He was way ahead of his time. Or maybe things never really change. At least on this physical plane. Here’s an example as translated by Coleman Barks–one of my Rumi favorites:

“This being human is a guest house. Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness, some momentary awareness comes as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and attend them all! Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows, who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture, still, treat each guest honorably. He may be clearing you out for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice, meet them at the door laughing, and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes, because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.

Welcome difficulty. Learn the alchemy True Human Beings know: the moment you accept what troubles you’ve been given, the door opens.

Welcome difficulty as a familiar comrade. Joke with torment brought by the Friend.

Sorrows are the rags of old clothes and jackets that serve to cover and then are taken off. That undressing, and the beautiful naked body underneath is the sweetness that comes after grief.”

(Man, I am looking for that sweetness. I am looking for the courage to welcome my difficulty, accept my troubles and dive through that open door. I’ve done it before–the mistake is thinking that that’s the end of it. But the cycle goes round and round. Look, here it comes again!)

I used to read that poem every morning when I woke up during the break up of my marriage. It kept me going. Of late I have forgotten the truths in that passage. It’s felt like too many tough “guests” have been arriving lately: elderly parents both dying slow, painful deaths; losing my job; my car blowing up; getting older and “having nothing to show for it”; feeling immobilized.

Shit, I’m a writer and a painter. I have talent and intelligence and I am letting this stuff beat me down. It’s time for a change. It’s time to meet this crap laughing. Sometimes it is all so absurd I HAVE to laugh. My life seems to be ruled by Murphy’s Law.

I hereby declare this my year of new beginnings. Of rediscovering myself. of taking risks and getting my work, my wisdom, my gifts out into the world. 365 days and undoing 56 years of conditioning. Can she do it? It’s a tall order but over the years I have made some inroads into the mire that is my subconscious control center (read “The Biology of Belief” for more on that-great book!). Coming back into the family fold, leaving my life and friends in New York, although I was doing the right thing, helping my parents and my sister, was not a healthy move for me.

So here I am, sharing my bed with a laptop and contemplating my future. Better than last week when I was contemplating my death. Heath Ledger inspired me to consider massive amounts of alcohol and a bottle of oxycontin to send me off to my next stage. Only the thought of how pissed my sister would be at having to deal with all my junk and my house (she wouldn’t even appreciate getting my car), kept me from taking the plunge. Well, and the friends who banged on my door, called a state rep to set a fire under unemployment (14 weeks and no payments), and dragged me out places.

I guess I should write more often because I am feeling blessed right now, reading over this. What is more important in life than people you love and who love you? I am rich in that department, if only I didn’t hide out so much.

Well, I got a good book waiting to put me to sleep, that’s all for now. L. (c) Linda R. Baker

Ik hou me aanbevolen!)

The town-hall-style meetings that took place this summer have become iconic; the mere phrase “town hall” now evokes images of citizens, many of them seniors, rising up in protest against a proposed socialized overhaul of the health care system. Now, Starbucks is trying to convert the town-hall turmoil into buzz for its new brand of instant coffee, called Via. And the ad campaign itself is causing a backlash. In a new commercial, part of Starbucks’s attempt to grab a piece of the $21-billion global market for instant coffee, a narrator says that all kinds of people cannot taste the difference between the chain’s fresh brewed and its instant coffee — from nurses to Civil War re-enactors to “people who yell at town-hall meetings.” At that point, the ad shows an older man at a meeting shouting, “I can’t taste the difference!”
The ad clearly is mocking people who have strong reservations about the health care overhaul while insulting potential customers. Wouldn’t you think a company who charges an outrageous price for a cup of instant coffee would know better than to mock their customers? I predict a significant drop in sales because of this insult to the senior/baby-boom generation.

“Sjo, gaattie lekker, vrouwke”

The story is told of two men, Harry and Stan, who have known each other for some time. Harry has fallen upon hard times and has come to his old friend asking for some help.

”Why come to me?”, Stan asks. “Why should I help you out? What have you ever done for me?”

”What have I ever done for you?”, Harry gasps. “Why, don’t you remember when your house burned down several years ago, and you and your family moved in with me?”

”Yes, I remember. But…”

”And what about the time your child was in danger of drowning and I jumped into the lake to rescue him?”

”Yes, but…”

”And how about the time that you lost your job and I gave you all that money? Don’t you remember? I’ve done lots for you through the years!”

”Everything you say is true enough”, Stan says. “But what have you done for me lately?”

Most of us on the North Shore have many things to be grateful for: employment, children, family, food on the table, a roof over our head, the forest, the mountains, the beaches, the sunshine. All these things are wonderful gifts from God. Prayer is simply a way of saying “Thank you” for all these wonderful gifts. It is so easy to grumble and complain. It takes work to be grateful and thankful for what we have. When we make the decision to say “thank you”, things begin to change in our lives. When we make the decision to acknowledge our “Higher Power”, more peace and contentment can enter our personal lives. Prayer really changes things, but first it changes us!

Sociological Prayer

Dr. Reginald Bibby, the famous Canadian sociologist, has done some very interesting statistical research on the prayer habits and beliefs of Canadians. He found that 75% of Canadians pray privately at least once in a while, 30% pray daily, and 28% say grace before meals at least once a week. Close to 50% of Canadians acknowledge the possibility of having experienced God’s presence in their daily lives. Bibby also notes that more than 40% of the nation’s 15 to 19 year olds believe that they have experienced God. Clearly prayer is still a meaningful activity for the vast majority of Canadians. But Canadians, especially the Baby-boomers, are wanting prayer to be much more experiential and informal than in the past.

The Last Taboo

Even though Canadians are people of prayer, they are also very private about their prayer lives. Often even their spouses, or their closest friends don’t know about the extent of their prayer lives. In previous decades, the taboo subjects were sex, death, and politics. In our “liberated” age, the one topic that people still feel embarrassed to mention in polite conversation is their prayer lives. Yet studies, referred to in Newsweek, show that spouses who can pray together report greater degrees of marital satisfaction and greater sexual intimacy. One study showed that while up to 1 in 2 marriages break up, only 1 in 20 marriages break up where both of the couple regularly attend church. More significantly, the study showed that only 1 in 200 couples break up where both couples go to church regularly and pray together on a regular basis. It is encouraging to see research confirm the historic belief that “the family that prays together stays together.” Prayer, it seems, really changes things.

Scientific Prayer

Even medical science is beginning to confirm that prayer really makes a difference in the health and recovery of individuals. In an experiment at San Francisco General Hospital, reported in the Southern Medical Journal, a researcher asked outsiders to pray for a group of cardiac patients. Even though the patients weren’t told that prayers were being said for them, the study found that they recovered faster than those in an otherwise identical control group. Studies by Harvard Cardiologist Dr. Herbert Benson showed that patients that prayed were more successful at lowering metabolic rates, slowing the heart rate and reducing other symptoms of stress. Even science is showing that prayer really changes things.

My prayer is that more and more of us will be able to break the taboos around prayer, and begin to discover for ourselves that prayer really changes things.

MYRTLE BEACH, SC: The Myrtle Beach music scene receives another boost as locally based On These Airwaves release their first studio recording “Sunset Provisions” on Saturday, July 11, with a free concert on the main stage at Broadway at the Beach’s Celebrity Square. Tom Yoder, guitar legend, recording artist and former local resident, will open for On These Airwaves, taking the stage at 8:00 p.m.

Band founder Eric Long, calls the project, “A realization of the entire band’s dream to put together a ‘thinking man’s album’. All of us are long-time musicians, playing for the love of playing, but also wanting to ‘scratch the recording itch’. We want to be at the vanguard of promoting independent artists along the coast of South Carolina. Top quality talent, production, technology and opportunities are right here in our own back yard”.

The band’s website http://ontheseairwaves.com describes their signature sound as, “a musical brew consisting of vintage spices – Beatles and Byrds; classic herbs – Floyd and REM; and modern garnish – Radiohead and Elbow. Lush harmonies mask a deeper, sometimes introspective musical theme. OTA’s “Sunset Provisions” is a record of life. From the joy and fear of childhood to the fear and joy of being an adult,”

Americans spent nearly $12 billion on cosmetic procedures to look good good last year – much of it on breast implants, surgical face-lifts and Botox injections – a medical practice feeding frenzy that has touched everyone from young professionals to aging baby-boomers.

Saving face doesn’t mean one has to go under the knife. From hyaluronic acid injections to fractional resurfacing, nonsurgical options are an essential part of facial rejuvenation techniques.

What started with Botox now includes a host of Restylane, Puragen, Sculptra and Evolence remedies.

Dr. Paul Lorenc of New York believes cosmetic surgery has become more popular today because it’s much easier to perform, there’s less downtime for recovery and it’s more exposed in the media, saying, “What we are doing 10 years ago was archaic. We have progressed tremendously in the name of patient benefits and safety.”

The No. 1 surgical procedure nationwide in 2008, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, was breast augmentation. The average cost is $3,885 for silicone gel implants and $3,603 for saline implants.

The top nonsurgical procedure in the nation was Botox injections ($2.46 million) at an average cost of $443 each.

Face-lifts are still the main component of cosmetic treatments, with 132,000 procedures performed in 2008 at an average cost of $6,728.

Since 1997, the number of cosmetic procedures nationally has increased 457 percent to 11.7 million surgical and nonsurgical procedures annually. Women have 10.6 million, or 91 percent, of the procedures.

What every babyboomer should know about their Health. The way you live your life impacts your health

What every babyboomer should know about their Health.

The way you live your life impacts your health more then anything else. If you choose to continue abusing it with bad habits it is going to wear out faster and put you in a position of being more and more dependent on a medical system that is great on covering up the symptoms, but not working on the underlying causes that are triggering the symptoms. You are the one in daily control of your life not Western or Alternative medicine. You alone are the one that can make lifestyle changes that improve your mental and physical health. It is no one elses job to do this.

There is a way of living that is healthy and no other way is going to save you if you don’t learn how to do it. Western Medicine and Alternative Medicine do agree in two important areas of your health however, exercise and diet. If you are not exercising at least 4 days a week you could be in for big troubles down the road of life. I never exericised on a regular basis myself until I noticed that my blood pressure was going up and up. I am not into taking drugs to control my blood pressure so I researched the ways to reduce blood pressure naturally. I found that exercising for ten minutes for 3 or 4 times in a two hour period does wonders! I exercise for ten minutes, play on the computer for a few minutes, exercise for ten minutes, play for few minutes, exercise for ten minutes and I am done. On the days where I have more time I do this four times. I have successfully reduced my blood pressure from 170 / 90 to 128 / 74 in six months. I know there are cases where this does not work and you should see your western doctor immediately if you blood pressure is high and you can not get it under control as your heart is serious business and no laughing matter. Get your blood pressure under control with the drugs if there is no other way but continue to exercise to keep that ticker going and healthy. I know several other babyboomers that have started exercising and they have all have been able to get some positive results by exercising without drugs and even while taking their drugs.

Diet is also one of the four things that you should start paying more attention to for good health. I have seen people eat themselves to death. What causes one to do this themselves? Most of the people I have know that has done this to themselves are unhappy. That’s right “UNHAPPY”. They have lost the ability to control their emotions to the part where eating the “sweet” or “salty” or other wrong foods is the only way they can be happy for the “moment” and afterwards fall back into a even more unhappy mental state because they feel guilty about eating.

Hi! I’ve been busy on FB, Twitter, promoting my events, meetings, writing curriculum and networking.
I’ve been ignoring my blog, exercising and visiting Mom in her nursing home. This AM I acknowledged this is all temporary, and did some EFT and I “tapped” on being totally attentive to my current priorities, not cutting any corners, and vowed that I will get into more of a routine in a few days. I called Mom on my way to a professional meeting/seminar this morning; she thankfully understood and was not needy at all. And a beautiful spring like day here, too! (I would’ve taken her out for some air if I’d visited). Later, after a very productive meeting, I went on to meet more people, walked with my cell to ear around parking lots, and went on with the understanding I was to attend a LI chamber of commerce meeting this eve. Then… it turned out my connection thought our meeting is to be tomarrow, along with the evening venue. Well!! I was given a gift; and in less than a minute a was thinking should I visit Mom and go for a great boardwalk walk or to the gym. Or go directly home, do not pass go or boardwalk, and continue where I left off in my office, including answering calls, and grateful to have this gift of time! And that is exactly what I’m doing now.

A Baby Boomer Offers Her Views on Tom Brokaw’s Book “Boom!”

Eileen Lichtenstein was asked to discuss Tom Brokaw’s bestselling book, “Boom!: Talking About the Sixties: What Happened, How It Shaped Today, Lessons for Tomorrow” along with her own thoughts about being a Baby Boomer.

Not only is Boom! a terrific read, we thought Eileen’s perspective about what it is like being a baby boomer was particularly interesting and insightful.

Here’s her interview:
1. What made you decide to read Boom!?
EL: “I’m involved with this generation on many personal and professional levels. A Boomer myself, a child of the 60’s, I often reference this time personally.. I’ve always been a fan of Tom Brokaw’s reporting and sensitivity to complex issues and was interested in reading his “take” on the times. And, a large percentage of the people I coach and work with professionally are Baby Boomers.”
2. Overall, what did you think of the book And what did you find most interested in it (positive or negative)?
EL: “I commend Tom Brokaw on combining the subjective with the objectivity of a reporter to make this book a joy to read, and an effective “refresher course” on the era. I like how he divided the chapters and I didn’t always read it in sequence! I find it comforting that a mainstream, respected journalist can be so honest in talking about his own involvement in the 60’s and 70’s and finds no conclusive judgment on the era is necessary~ we each take with us our own perspective and add it to today’s mix.”
3. What are some of your personal memories of The Sixties, perhaps one or two instances in particular that best sum up your experience?
EL: “I was a “hippie”: tear gassed in anti-war protest marches while I attended SUNY Buffalo, the “Berkeley” of the East, with both SDS and ROTC on campus. I graduated with a BS in Education in 1970 and then lived and worked in NYC with my boyfriend from college, soon to become husband (we recently celebrated our 38 anniversary with our daughters 28 and 30, each visiting from Europe!) Steve and I saved every penny, had lots of cats and no furniture… after one year we packed up and traveled in Europe and North Africa for 9 months, with backpacks, sleeping bags and eventually bicycles. Mostly wonderful memories!”
4. Now that Baby Boomers are nearing retirement age, what effects do you think The Sixties will have on them – in terms of health, spirituality, finances and emotional well being?
EL: “We have seen the best and worst of times..personally and politically, no matter what we did and what our belief systems may be. We want to be fulfilled, have fun and to “give back” in our relationships, with our families, work, hobbies, volunteerism and philanthropic venues. We want to continue the trend of longevity that our parents’ generation has begun. In a sustained state of wellness, we want to enjoy ourselves and our families..and for the world and its people to live well.”
6. What is your age?
EL: “59.”
7. In what town do you live?
EL: “Baldwin, NY.”
8. What is your occupation?
EL: “Personal Performance Coach/Professional Speaker.”
9. Is there anything else you care to add?
EL: “I coach and work with many Baby Boomers. We are continuing to transition and metamorphisize in unchartered territory. We are pioneers and trendsetters..then and now~ and need to work in harmony with generation x and y for the world to keep spinning and be productive!”
