Tom and Sam dive into the twin pleasures that are A Serious Man and New Moon with intellectual curiosity and torso-viewing expertise. Producer John then joins the fun to violently criticise Sam Worthington and life as a six-inch tall man. John goes on to praise Babylon 5 and Fellini, before everyone joins in to cite The Rock as a great 90s action-fest. The conclusion is a trailer round-up, with Clash of the Titans going up against Kick-Ass.

Tony has gone now. He was my friend. We talked, discussed and argued for years over the matter of consciousness. The subject would come up time and again on the tinnitus forum, where we met some years ago. Tony developed cancer but never complained. He had guts. He never gave in to the pain of this terrible illness. He fought for his life, and we followed his daily battle to win over the cancer, with amazement. Tony’s gargantuan bravery is a lesson to me.

Among his interest was his guitar that he played well.

Several of Tony’s post from the Tinnitus Forum

Hi Freddie & anyone else whose interested.

“You’ve mentioned Libet lots, but though I’ve never commented, I have been thinking about it plenty.

Just now I walked through the kitchen to the garden, and as I got to the back door I thought “Hmm, I just turned the kettle on as I passed it. How did that happen? I didn’t plan to do that. OK; now that it’s on I’ll make a cup of coffee”. So there’s an example of doing without consciously deciding to do and not realising until afterwards.

More on the case is getting out of the Bath.
I’ll be lying there dehydrating my skin, and think. “It’s about time I got out”, but I’ll be too comfortable to move.
Then suddenly some fifteen minutes later, I will be surprised find myself clambering out and reaching for a towel. The time interval is too long for there to be a direct link between the conscious decision and the action. And the realisation that I’m undertaking the action certainly happens a long time after the action begins.

I think that what happens is I prime the unconscious parts of my brain to take action whenever they are ready. Delegate. It is as if I ask Chris if she will get me a jar of coffee some time today. I prime the task, but leave the timing and detail to her. I find out that the task is completed some time afterwards. So it appears that the task was accomplished before I was aware of it, but I had primed it first.
I don’t think Libet is right that consciousness only has the power of veto. I think that consciousness has the power of initiation too.

I’m currently very interested in watching how many things I do, such switching the kettle on, without being aware of having consciously decided to do so.

Today wiring up the kitchen electrics. If not electrocuted I will phone u later.”
-Tony

But if this is so Tony, consciousness would be aware of that order

“I think that a lot of the time it is, especially when the time delays are big, like my example of me getting out of the bath.

When it is really short as in Libet’s experiment, I think the process might
1. Conscious tells the colliculus (or something) to watch out for the blip and report back. The mri lights up a little
2. the colliculus sees the blip and reports back
3. milliseconds later, consciousness gets the message, and the reward factor causes the mri to light up a lot.
4. When asked about the order of events, consciousness rationalises. Not understanding the technicalities it tells the researcher that itinitiated the event and then it happened, not realising that it was a further few miliseconds before the realisation that the job was done.

Certainly, as you’ll know already, a lot of events happen without conscious initiation. A badly behaving driver migh cause us to unconsciously take evasive action. In that circumstance it is quite clear that the sequence is (1) event, then (2) conscious awareness of action.

I’ll look at the John Moore’s course. I could do an MSc on the mechanisms of various disease curing drugs, but it is **** expensive at 1100 ukp per module.
What I’m curious about is the mechanisms by which cancers kill – something i know nothing about. I imagine some, like mine, are non-toxic and kill by simply getting in the way, blocking and squashing things. Others might give off neurotoxins, and others might even eat into healthy tissue somehow. Maybe – I don’t know.”
…..

“The first module of my OU degree was utterly brilliant. Taught me everything about neurons, second messenger systems, neuronal development, dna, key diseases like altzheimers, downes, parkinsons, conditioning plasticity habituation. It was life changing.
After that it was just courses to get the degree- chemical bonds and stuff. Not that gripping.
The final module, the high level one, was a lot like the first, not much more to it. It got me my degee, but also convinced me that some ‘dumbing down’ had been going on in the OU. Easier courses to entice more customers. So it has put me off a bit.”

……..

“Freddie, you mentioned (by phone) that possibly consciousness, my conscious self, is merely the watcher.
This appears at first glance to be a valid model, but it raises a conundrum.
If the real ‘me’ is an observer, then who is thiinking these thoughts and having this discussion? It must be my brain.
If I am the watcher, then I am watching my body/brain contemplate it’s own self awareness, and consciousness, and wonder whether it too is an active participant, or merely a watcher.
It becomes an endless repeat. It stops making sense.
It must be me who is asking questions about my own self-awareness and existence. OR to put it another way, whatever is asking questions about my own self-awareness and existence cannot be just a watcher, whether it is my ’soul’ or my brain, must be the essence me.
Therefore, I can not be a passive watcher. “Tony

When we first met O’Neill, we were exposed to the idea of his having a tragedy in his past

When we first met O’Neill, we were exposed to the idea of his having a tragedy in his past – and his doing things that made us root for the character – long before we found out he was supposed to destroy the mission if things went south. We were exposed to the heroic side of the character before we encountered the villainous side – and he promptly redeemed himself. He did some dumb things later on – like shooting the humaniform Replicator – but only after we’d already gotten to like him.

The most important scene in the first episode of Babylon 5 was when Garibaldi points out to Londo that the Centauri first claimed Earth was a lost colony of theirs, and Londo sarcastically asks if he wants blood and tells him to open his wrists. “Centauri don’t have major arteries in their wrists.” “Of course not! Do you think I’m stupid?”

The most important two scenes in the opening episodes of Firefly were when Wash was playing with his dinosaurs, and Mal kicked the thug into the engine intake. “Curse your sudden yet inevitable betrayal!”

Long stories tend to start with a few characters that we are meant to like – they make us smile, or laugh, or do something awesome that induces us to clear brainspace to keep track of them and their circumstances. They’re the hooks that draw us into the story. Once we care about one character, it becomes easier to care about the others.

What were the most important scenes from the first six episodes of SGU? The ones that made us like the characters before we were exposed to their unlikeable flaws?

First a quick note. We have the holidays coming up and I am also in a play that is running until January. Given this I don’t know how many episodes I will be able to do between now and then. I am still slowly working my way through the script books. If I don’t write again until January, have a wonderful holiday season!

Anna Sheridan comes back at the worst possible time and she invites John Sheridan to come back to Za’ha’dum with her to learn the truth behind the Shadow War. The results are explosive.

Wow. Just as John and Delenn are spending their night together – a Minbari ritual, not anything bad – Anna arrives. Well to say the least John is shocked and upset and who can blame him? Anna agrees to go through any test he wants to prove her identity so she is sent to Dr. Franklin. Meanwhile, John confronts Delenn. Okay, so in all fairness Delenn had no reason to believe Anna would be alive, but I don’t think she ever checked either. Anna wants John to go back with her to Za’ha’dum to meet the Shadows and find out what the war is really all about. In the end he agrees if Anna tells about what happened with the Icarus. Anna says there was an accident and most of the crew were killed and also it destroyed their communications. So plans are made to go to Za’ha’dum. However Dr. Franklin’s report on Anna has something – she has scars where the implants on the telepaths who were going to be put in Shadow vessels were. John knows something is up and he gets Garibaldi to help him with his plans, ones Anna doesn’t know about. Once at Za’ha’dum, John is introduced to Justin and it isn’t surprising Mr. Morden is there as well. They say the Vorlons and the Shadows were left behind to shepherd the younger races, but they couldn’t agree on how to do it: the Vorlons being the lords of order and the Shadows the lords of chaos. They want John to join them willingly since he has the ability to lead whole worlds the same direction he goes, but they are getting his cooperation in any way or else they will cut off his support system: Babylon 5. Right on cue, the Shadows appear and surround Babylon 5. However John has no intention of cooperating after what they did to Anna – putting her in their ships destroyed her personality and even though everything else is the same she isn’t the same person any more. He escapes to a ledge over an abyss and calls down the White Star with two nukes on it. Before it hits, Kosh tells him to jump and he does. Then the capital of the Shadows is destroyed in a rather lovely explosion. John left a message for Delenn telling her about his plans and how he knows this is a trap and that he loves her. Delenn is heartbroken. The Shadows leave Babylon 5 alone, but Ivanova somehow knows what is happening. And Garibaldi who went out with the fighters is missing . . .

John is mad and Delenn is sad. Not surprising given that Anna is back.

Wee!

Jaja. Etter noen timer fikk jeg en melding. Veldig fine bilder blablabla.. Men hun var skuffet over at hun bare fikk 50 bilder for 3000 kroner.

Hun betaler 3000 kroner for hele jobben. Hvor dum går det ann å bli?

I morgen skal jeg og Marius til Nathalie go det blir fønneh. Vi skal spise masse godteri og brus og dippe og så skal vi på kino og se på filmer, for det er det som vises på kinoer. Filmer.

Caught the trailer in the theater before ‘SAW VI’. Cameron’s back is (again) against the wall with the rumored $200-300 million+ budget for the movie. But in his defense he had the same budget issues with TITANIC and then knocked it out of the ballpark with the stunning result.

The bottom line? THRALL WORLD couldn’t help but notice how incredibly REAL the aliens looked in a good portion of the trailer. It really was remarkable and will probably make or break the movies success. No SHREK or HULK cartoons here. They have upped the photo-realistic CGI to an eye-bending level and made THRALL WORLD a believer and we can’t help but wonder how much more of a difference watching it in 3D will make.

But we do hope the “going native” plot (a la DANCES WITH WOLVES, TORAL RECALL, THE LAST SAMURAI) has more behind it than the main character sympathizing with the aliens because an “evil” corporation wants a valuable gem which only seems to exist right underneath the aliens home.

Set to open in conventional 3D theaters and IMAX 3D on December 18th, 2009 and written and directed by James Cameron (TERMINATOR, TITANIC), ‘AVATAR’ stars; Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez, and Giovanni Ribisi, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Peter Mensah, Laz Alonso, Wes Studi, Stephen Lang and Matt Gerald.

It’s the battle we’ve all been waiting for as Sheridan goes head-to-head with the Shadow

It’s the battle we’ve all been waiting for as Sheridan goes head-to-head with the Shadows. Meanwhile, Franklin must finally come to grips with himself.

Delenn works at getting the League of Non-Aligned Worlds to contribute ships to a fleet that will attack the Shadows. Sheridan knows the Shadows have been drive the younger races to one spot, then demoralize them by flattening them there, but he needs someone on location to alert the rest of the fleet. Ivanova and Marcus are sent out in the White Star. Gotta love Minbari beds, by the way, though I don’t think Ivanova would agree^^; And nice going Marcus, saying something romantic in Minbari then translating it as something much more mundane^^; There is a smaller Shadow ship, similar to the White Star in size, that arrives in the area Ivanova and Marcus are watching. The good news is the White Star hasn’t been detected yet. The bad news, the moon they were behind soon moves and they are found out. The White Star does manage to destroy the ship, but not before being damaged by an attempted ram by the other ship. Engines, normal and jump, are off line. That, of course, is when the Shadow fleet arrives. The White Star decides to signal their fleet. Soon, the Shadow fleet spots them. That is when the Alliance fleet jumps in. Engines are back on line, and the battle is engaged with Sheridan and Delenn directing things from a Minbari cruiser. They manage to force the Shadow fleet to retreat, but with heavy losses.

Meanwhile, Franklin is still on Walkabout. He spots some guy getting hurt by some thugs and in trying to help he gets knifed in the stomach. The thugs retreat and the guy he was trying to help refuses to do anything since he’s a criminal and would be arrested. Franklin can’t get out of where he is. This is the point when he finally finds himself again and has a conversation with himself. His alter ego isn’t too pleased Franklin saying he runs away from everything. In spite of this, Franklin decides he wants to live and do better and somehow manages to find the strength to climb out. He is soon found and taken to Med-bay.

While the wounded are tended too and things cleaned up, Sheridan and company have to wonder what the Shadows will do next. His dream from Kosh in All Alone in the Night starts to make sense, but what does it really mean? A single Shadow vessel moves through hyperspace. Meanwhile, Franklin has a new perspective and appreciation on life and is already helping out as much as his still injured and weakened body will allow. Sheridan of course gives him his job back. Then Sheridan leaves to spend a night asleep while Delenn watches for his true face. That is when Babylon 5 gets an unexpected visitor – Anna Sheridan, the captain’s wife who is supposed to be dead.

Between Franklin and the war, Garibaldi has lots to worry about.

One of the presents my husband got for his birthday was the DVD box set of the five Babylon 5 movies

One of the presents my husband got for his birthday was the DVD box set of the five Babylon 5 movies (The Gathering, In The Beginning, Thirdspace, The River of Souls, and A Call to Arms). We just finished seeing all five of the movies, and I thought I’d take a few minutes to briefly examine each one.

The Gathering – This was the original pilot movie that aired in February 1993, and is set about one year before the events in the first season of Babylon 5. The plot revolves around an assassination attempt on Kosh, the ambassador at Babylon 5 from the Vorlon homeworld. One of the most notable differences are characters who appear in this pilot that do not re-appear in the actual series (except in one case, where the character ends up returning later on). In the pilot, the first officer of the station is Laurel Takashima. She is replaced by Susan Ivanova in the series. Honestly, Takashima’s departure wasn’t a big loss. Personally, I thought the actress was a bit wooden and awkward. I think bringing in Claudia Christian as Ivanova made a huge difference to the series. In the pilot, the ship’s doctor was Dr. Benjamin Kyle. He was replaced in the actual series by Dr. Stephen Franklin. While the actor playing Dr. Kyle wasn’t too bad of an actor, I think Richard Biggs really brought something to the series as Dr. Franklin. In the long run, I’m not entirely sure Dr. Kyle could have pulled off some of the things that Dr. Franklin ended up doing in the series. The final cast change concerned the resident telepath. In the pilot, the telepath is Lyta Alexander. She was replaced at the beginning of the series by Talia Winters (however, in one of the later seasons, Talia leaves and Lyta returns). Also to note is the fact that the makeup and prosthetics for the characters of De’Lenn ad G’Kar are “rougher” looking than how they appear in the actual series. With these differences, The Gathering has a bit of a different feel from the rest of the Babylon 5. It’s not a bad film, but it is definitely meant to establish the station and the characters, as well as to establish the premise of the series. One funny note for those readers who are familiar with Babylon 5: the actor who would portray Morden in the series appears in The Gathering as a member of Babylon 5’s bridge crew.

In The Beginning – This movie tells the story about the Earth-Minbari War (which is war that took place before the start of the series). The narrative structure for this one was kind of interesting. Londo Mollari, the emperor of Centauri Prime, is telling the story to a couple of Centauri children and their caretaker, who are wandering around in the palace. I recognized some of the footage in the movie from flashbacks that appeared throughout the Babylon 5 series. There was some new footage shot besides that of Londo and the children, though. This movie ultimately ties together the bits and pieces of information the audience was learned about the Earth-Minbari War.

Thirdspace – This film centers on the return of a very ancient alien force that had once tried to destroy life in the Milky Way galaxy. Lyta Alexander, the telepath, ends up being really strongly affected by an ancient artifact that’s brought to Babylon 5. A couple of scientists come to check out the artifact, and unleash a force that nearly destroys the station and everything around it. This was an OK film, all things considered.

The River of Souls – This movie brings back the Soul Hunters (who appeared in an episode of the first season of the series). An archeaologist has dug up one of the chambers belonging to the Soul Hunters, and takes with him an orb filled with the souls of a race that was supposedly dying out. The archeaologist brings the orb with him to Babylon 5, and manages to unleash the unhappy souls contained within the orb. A Soul Hunter comes to the station in an effort to reclaim the orb, and it sparks a major debate about whether there is life after death. The subplot about the unsanctioned holo brothel that’s being run in “down below” is actually kind of amusing. And the “Love Bat” is good for a few chuckles.

A Call to Arms – This final movie is actual a setup for a spin-off series, Crusade. It is discovered a race that was loyal to the Shadows wants to destroy Earth on the fifth anniversary of the founding of the Interstellar Alliance. Sheridan leads a band of people to try to stop the Drakh from unleashing a Shadow Planet Killer, which would destroy Earth. While Sheridan and his crew were able to destroy the Shadow Planet Killer, they hadn’t known about the nanovirus weapon they had. The Drakh released the virus into Earth’s atmosphere, infecting everyone on the planet, who would die in five years unless a cure could be found. Crusade was supposed to be a five season series, with the first season or two focusing on finding the cure for the virus. However, Crusade never made it past its thirteenth episode on TNT. Sci-Fi wanted to pick up the series, but couldn’t find money in their budget to do so. I haven’t seen Crusade, and quite frankly, this movie didn’t encourage me to want to go see it. Of course, for me at least, it probably doesn’t help that the idea of something that could destroy the Earth and needing to do something about it within a certain time frame, reminds me a lot of the first season of Space Battleship Yamato/Star Blazers. By far, A Call to Arms is the weakest of the five films.

The time consuming, quest adventuring bundle of loveliness that is the world of Elder Scrolls will be getting two books based within it’s universe – just in time for Christmas! The Infernal City is out first on November 24th and penned by Greg Keyes who’s previous titles include Star Wars: The New Jedi Order Edge of Victory 1 & 2 as well as a few Babylon 5 novels. I rarely go for the plethora of video game novels but was drawn to and enjoyed the first Mass Effect prequel so quite tempted by Mr Keyes dip into the world of Elder Scrolls. The cover (seen above) looks suitably fanciful so I guess I maybe able to judge a book by it’s cover after all. The Infernal City is available for preorder in all the usual places.

Ah, in this book we finish off season 2 and start season 3. This includes some wonderful episodes, including: The Fall of Night, Matters of Honor, A Day in the Strife, Passing Through Gethsemane, Messages from Earth, and Dust to Dust. I shouldn’t put it this way, but it is so fun to see the threads of fate squeeze tighter and tighter around our heroes . . . We get the demise of Keffer, the introduction of Marcus, and the atmosphere on set. Finally, we get treated to some preliminary notes on season three from the office of JMS. Another must have book for hardcore fans!

Edit: I can’t believe I forgot this! Arguably the most memorable and touching part of this script book are the reflections of JMS on Richard Biggs, Dr. Stephen Franklin on Babylon 5, who had passed away shortly before volume four came out. Richard Biggs, farewell. You will be missed.

Sheridan tries to unravel the Shadow’s strategy while visitors of a religious nature come to the station. Londo plots to get G’Kar to return to Narn.

Four religious representatives visit Babylon 5. The one who seems to be their unofficial leader, Reverend Will Dexter, seems to be an old acquaintance of Brother Theo’s – the two bicker like old friends. Sheridan’s been spending a lot of time in the War Room lately trying to figure out what the Shadows are up to, but he’s getting worn down. After a discussion of strategy and words at the same time Delenn gets Sheridan to promise to have dinner with these religious representatives, playing the trump card of Minbari honor^^; At the dinner we find these clerics are part of the resistance back on Earth and came to Babylon 5 to deliver accurate information about what is really going on back home. Later, Sheridan is spending a long night trying to get stuff done and has a heart to heart with Reverand Dexter, who convinces it’s okay for him to unburden and share the load occasionally. Sheridan does that with Delenn which makes him feel better, though no new ideas are immediately present. However, the conversation leads him to study the seemingly random Shadow attacks in a new way. The Shadows haven’t hit the area around Babylon 5 yet because people are fleeing there. When they do attack, the result on moral will be exponentially bad. However, Sheridan makes an injudicious remark about how it’s what he would do in the Shadow’s position and Delenn decides he needs a break. Desperately. Where better to have a break than at the services Reverend Dextor has arranged, complete with gospel singing? Later, Delenn takes Sheridan out to show him a surprise – a fleet of White Star ships. The forces of Light are now as ready as they will ever be to fight the Shadows. And we get Sheridan and Delenn’s first kiss:) Well, Delenn’s first kiss with Sheridan at least. Sheridan already had his first kiss with Delenn back in War Without End^^;

But this episode is owned by Londo and G’Kar. Londo wants to deal with G’Kar and he wants to do it now. He tells Vir to tell G’Kar that Na’Toth, whom we haven’t heard from since the fall of Narn, is being held prisoner under the building that used to house the Kah’ri. Since it is full of catacombs and G’Kar is the only member of the Kah’ri free, he is the only one who can supposedly save her. Vir doesn’t want to and at first refuses, but Londo blackmails Vir, threatening to let out the truth regarding Vir’s activities on Mimbar. So Vir does and Londo says. Meanwhile, Lord Refa and and a high ranking official from Centauri Prime arrive. Londo and Refa both snipe at the other to this minister when the other isn’t there. The fact is, the competition between their two houses is starting to tear the government apart. The Emperor doesn’t care how it ends, just that it ends. Londo says he will prove his worth to the Emperor above that of Refa or his house. Vir is incensed that Londo would use G’Kar like this. Some how Refa learns that Vir knows Londo’s plans and he kidnaps Vir. Vir doesn’t respond to bribery so Refa has a telepath take Londo’s plans from Vir’s mind. Eventually Vir is rescued by Londo and Vir is worried. G’Kar gets Garibaldi to have the Rangers sneak him onto Narn. Once there, he and others head through the catacombs under the government buildings but are surrounded by Refa’s people. However, G’Kar then shows message from Londo. Londo wants Refa bad for the murder of his love Adira, among other things. He could kill Refa back on Babylon 5 or Centauri Prime but Londo wants to ruin Refa. To get G’Kar’s cooperation, he gave documents to the Narn detailing Refa’s involvement in some of the worst crimes against Narns, including authorizing the use of weapons of mass destruction. To ensure G’Kar’s cooperation, Londo has already freed a large number of Narn who are political prisoners. More will be freed when Refa is dead. Incriminating evidence is left to be found on Refa, and to put it shortly the Narn make quick work of him. With Refa dead and disgraced and his house ruined, the competition between the two houses is over. If you thought Vir was upset about betraying G’Kar, that is nothing to what Vir feels when he finds out how Londo used him.

Of special note is the juxtaposition of the gospel singing and Refa trying to get away from the Narn, with the gospel song playing throughout. It really is wrong to laugh, but the contrast is so . . . striking . . . I couldn’t help it.

Meet Reverend Will Dexter of the Baptist persuasion and Brother Theo’s “nemesis”.

Poor Vir has something to tell G’Kar that he doesn’t want to say.

Vir just can’t get a break this episode. First betraying G’Kar, now having his mind rummaged through.

Lord Refa laughed too soon. Never go up against both Londo and G’Kar – you’ll lose.

Delenn’s present to Sheridan: a fleet of White Star ships, and just in time.
