From the Geneva Bible–

Rev. 21:2–And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

Rev. 21_9–And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee thebride, the Lamb’s wife.

Rev. 22:17–And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

Bless the Lord! I believe we are in the last of the last days and after praying and fasting and seeking the Lord, the Holy Spirit guided me to open this website so as to share His words and lessons and visions that He has so graciously shared with me. In this way, I will be fulfilling my calling to build up the Kingdom of God, to let Him flow thru me that others who have ears to hear may be drawn and wooed to the Lover of our souls and be ever so inspired to desire to spend precious seeking times with Jesus Christ, wrapped up in His enduring love, hearing from Him and thereby satisfy His Heart. His call is ever to come up higher in His personal love, humility, holiness and to come closer to Him to find a deeper place in His Heart.

Also, as one of His watchmen, I will post His sober warnings, beckoning those to whom the Lord is speaking to repent and to turn to the Lord with all your hearts so as to be delivered from the Laodicean church of lukewarmness, where people think they have need of nothing and instead are wretched, blind, naked and miserable. Rev. 3.

To encourage all will listen to come out of the religious Babylonish system of the so-called churches of our day, which substitute their institutions and their hierarchies in place of the Living God! To encourage believers to seek the Lord to be continually delivered from the illusions of the matrix of this wicked world of which Satan is it’s god. The Lord of hosts is faithful to hear our cries and prayers and to move on our behalf that we may be blessed in Him and bless His Holy Name! Truly, it is a privilege to serve the Living God!

May our dear Lord help all of us to seek Him daily so as to become ever more sensitive to His voice and leading, His very Presence and to be tuned in to the Holy Spirit’s station. To obey Him and let Him flush out of us all that is not pleasing while He floods us with His living water. May He give us more of His view of all things, being discerning, using our spirit eyes and ears, allowing Him to do His purifying work in our hearts, and may He work His divine shift in us leading us into deeper repentance, readying us for the dark days ahead, moving into new places in the Spirit. Jesus, evermore, show us what the intimacy of first love looks like to you and move us deeper into that precious place of your heart. Surely, YOU ARE OUR TREASURE.

By Patrick Henningsen
Editor
21st Century Wire
July 5, 2010

In his most recent piece entitled “Popular Music is The Babylon System”, Prison Planet’s prolific writer Paul Joseph Watson goes into a deep analysis on how today’s vacant and vapid pop culture is gutting what’s left of our moral center. Read his excellent breakdown of the music industry in the article here. And there are some other aspects of pop music to consider…

Lady Ga Ga is the latest in a line of style-driven pop personalities

Imagery has always played a key part in the content of pop with the high tech surveillance/shiny robotic comic book themes playing an ever increasing role in the music videos of Beyonce, Lady Ga Ga and many pop entertainers today. Las Vegas meets Disneyland. In the last two decades we have seen a whole generation of 100% style-driven, short-term marketing icons whose imagery now out lives the music itself. Seductive and sexy, it’s a merger of popular culture desires and fears which converge on what some may argue is a well-crafted CGI pornographic genre targeting ever younger audiences(as well as overgrown children who reside in adult bodies), in some cases as young as 8 and 9 years old, boys and girls alike. It’s a neon arena where personality trumps character. This is a genre which sits well past the rock and roll revolution of the 60′s, 70′s and 80′s, a genre even MTV pioneer Andy Warhol could hardly imagine.

Hollywood and the Music and Fashion industries work hand in glove to create a theatre of high drama and emotive themes, which in turn program the public to accept different ideas. The youth are the primary target here.

Question: Who chooses our Pop Icons? Alan Watt explains how Hollywood and the Music industry work hand in glove.

Is this all-encompassing commercial onslaught by pop the end of the innocence for our youth? With the digital revolution upon us, a definite quickening has taken place, where the lines between age groups, morality and imagery have become so blurred and distorted that something like Cyndi Lauper, Thomas Dolby or Motley Crue in the 80′s- seen as edgy and genre-breaking rock/pop at the time 25 years ago, now looks as innocent as a Sesame Street block party. You can make so many other comparisons right back to the Summer of Love or even Elvis Presley, but few could foresee the cloud of corporate conditioning and social engineering we are witnessing today in the music industry and society. According to these pop markers, you could say that this is either a culture in rapid acceleration, or a culture in rapid decline. As to which one we think it is will depend largely on our idea of what constitutes social norms and values.

Watson also rightly points to artistic prophet Bob Marley’s song Babylon System as a reference point from where we might still backtrack from the current degenerate pop culture of Lady Ga Ga, MTV and Madonna- back to real progressive and insightful social commentary which was once broadcast by music icons of a bygone era.

After three decades since his passing, Bob Marley(below) still stokes the fires of enlightenment with music and lyrics that couldn’t be more relevant today…

written by Andy

I’m reminded of a time when I worked for a large, national bank in Canada. Let’s call it ScotiaBank. It was a crap job, doing crap things, for crap managers that had crap for brains. One day in the summer, we had an annual meeting where various charts and numbers were shown to us, in order to convince the group that, despite our own personal experiences, it was in fact not a crap job that everybody hated. It was an amazing place to work!

Then, at the end, a group of brown-nosers made a presentation, a song and dance sung to the tune “YMCA.” The division of the bank was “SDBI” and the words were “It’s fun to work at the S – D – B – I!” It was atrocious. At the end of the song, they said “OK! Now it’s YOUR TURN!” and everybody got up and danced and sang along. Except me. It was a turning point in my mind, and I knew that if I did this, I’d never be able to look myself in the mirror again. The whole time I sat there, my boss watched me, and we engaged in a staring contest until the song was over.

Three days later, I was fired for insubordination. I was young, and nervous, and shocked, so I just signed the termination papers and was escorted out by a security guard. But the one thing I did manage to do was to tell my boss, and his boss who was also there, “Just remember, they can do the same thing to you any time they want.”

To me, that experience was a microcosm of Toronto’s G20 summit. At the start of the week, I was having a bit of a laugh at the folks calling Toronto a “police state” because they weren’t allowed to occupy an Esso gas station. They were funny for their ineptitude, and the rally that day was largely a non-event, other than for inconvenienced drivers and a few amused residents of the Queen & Sherbourne area.

The week ended with Toronto becoming – if not the real thing, then at least a reasonable facsimile of – a police state. People had to consent to searches for no reason; peaceful protestors were pelted with rubber bullets; arrestees were kept without access to legal and medical services; homes were raided and legitimate activists intimated and arrested; accredited members of the media were arrested, beaten, and barred from reporting; military planes and helicopters circled the city constantly.

Regardless of how people feel about the events that transpired, we can all agree that Toronto was a shitty place to live this weekend.

Canadians don’t live in a constant state of martial law, because it’s not necessary. Most of us are reasonably cared for, employed, and have a high enough standard of living that we aren’t going to get crazy about things that we don’t like. (For example, the HST has been passed with barely a squeak from already hard-hit taxpayers.) Most of us know that our system of democracy is dysfunctional at best. We accept that the world is a hard place, and it’s just a fact of life that some people have more than others. We turn a blind eye to First Nations people living in deplorable conditions in our own backyard and figure that they must be doing something wrong.

Candians, by and large, remain silent and passive, and are complicit. We say that we’re against the G8, G20, FTAA, WTO, but really – are we? We have a pretty restrained way of showing it. And since we don’t upset the status quo – why would we, we’re at the top of the food chain – we don’t live in whatever you want to imagine a “police state” is.

But this weekend in Toronto, we experienced how fast that can change, and how heavy-handed authority can be when it wants, needs, or otherwise chooses to. This weekend, “the system” acted unilaterally against anybody that stepped out of line. The very thin veneer that we call “civilization” or “democracy” or “freedom” was peeled off this weekend, and what we saw underneath was rotten. Whether it was police brutality, or incomprehensible arguments by activist spokespeople, or the mob mentality of people getting the faintest scent of chaos in air, we saw how quickly things can descend into disorder.

In my June 13 entry, Harper’s Magic Bullet, I predicted that the intent of government and police in holding the G20 here, and spending $1b on security was to ensure violence began, that the legitimate protest message would be lost, and that public opinion would be swayed to the side of police. In my view, that’s exactly what happened. I don’t think it was any genius prognostication – it was just history repeating itself. By Saturday afternoon, as images of burning police cars were on everybody’s TV, people were Twittering, Facebooking, and phoning in to media that “these thugs have no right to be here,” and that “the police are doing the right thing,” and “the $1b is now totally justified.”

You might be tempted to ask, what exactly WAS the message of all the protestors, the one that got lost? It’s a good question and I’m not sure anybody knows. Certainly some groups, like No One Is Illegal or the First Nations people, have specific and clearly stated demands. But the overwhelming message of most people in the street was something along the lines of “We think the G8/G20 need to stop pursuing unfair economic policies that only serve the richer nations.”

To be honest, that’s about as much good as asking me to stop scratching my balls. I might say I’ll stop, and in public I might even do it from inside my pocket so it doesn’t look so obvious. But at the end of the day, it just feels too good to stop completely. Why would these nations stop scratching their balls? Because Haitians are living in shit? Because some black people in Africa have AIDS? I think we give these people far too much credit if we think our begging will sway them. They’re already aware of these issues. There’s a system, they are in charge, and it works for them. As long as they stay on top, nothing else matters.

So what can a person do? Well, you can try smashing things and see how far that gets you. If we all do that, it won’t be long before we do really live in a police state. You can live off the grid, and join like-minded people in the forest, as some people do. But this doesn’t really do much to help improve the situation of others; it just places problems out of sight and out of mind.

The first and most responsible thing I think we can do is to spend time reading, learning, and educating ourselves about global issues like poverty, disease, capitalism, trade organizations, and the like. It’s not easy with all of the misinformation out there, but it’s possible. I’m not the smartest guy in the world, but I’ve read enough to know that some things are more fucked up than others. And if you live in a city, there are probably lots of groups that meet to discuss or work on these types of problems.

If there’s one issue that strikes you as particularly important, do what you can to promote it. That might mean giving money to groups that actively work at helping people. It might mean joining these groups yourself. It might mean doing everything alone. But if we each put as much in to one social justice issue as we do into playing on Facebook, or watching baseball, or eating at restaurants, that would go a long way. Even if you just make a difference in the lives of a few people, that’s better than nothing.

The other thing we can do is vote, not in elections, but every day with our dollars. Don’t like factory farming? Stop buying Con-Agra products. Think that Coke should stop stealing water from villages in India? Stop drinking it. Sweatshop labour makes you sick? Why are you wearing a Nike shirt? We’re all guilty of participating in a system that harms people, there’s no escaping it. Sometimes, the trail of dirt your money leaves behind is dizzying: you buy sweatshop-free clothes but the cotton wasn’t fair trade. Then you buy fair trade, sweatshop free clothes and find out the cotton is not organic. Then you find organic, fair-trade, sweatshop free clothes but they were packed in Styrofoam on the oil-spewing boat that shipped them here. You finally find the perfect guilt-free T-shirt, and it costs $80. It’s a mess, and the easy thing to do is go to GAP and buy 3 tees for $15, but if we want to actually change anything, we have to hold ourselves as accountable as we want to hold politicians and corporations. We should spend every dollar we have carefully and really think about what we’re saying when we do. We won’t always be able to do the best thing possible, but if we try to most of the time, that’s a start. If we can somehow bankrupt the most corrupt corporations, and empower the ethical ones, then we’ll have achieved something real.

Personally, I hope the G20 keeps having these pointless meetings all over the world, a couple times each year. A lot of people in Toronto have witnessed something they previously thought was reserved for small developing nations with leaders who wear military uniforms instead of suits. This lights a candle of hope that we’ll see the mess of the world for what it is. When the G20 met in Pittsburgh, a candle was lit there. And if another candle is lit in Korea when the G20 meets again, and another, and another, and another, the light will be so bright that we’ll have no choice but to see. To see the cockroaches scatter, to see the dirt in the corners of the room, and to see that the only way we can bear to keep looking is if we clean this world up.

Postscript: The original title of this was ‘Final Thoughts’ as I wrote this before the Monday evening jail solidarity march. The march was both encouraging and discouraging. I really thought that by taking part in that action, the remaining prisoners would have been released, which they are, but slowly. As more news leaks out about the conditions in the prison, it’s clear that the G20 is not over for Toronto and more questions will need to be answered. I’ll do my best to keep up to date on those as well.

written by Andy

If anybody in Canada has a right to be pissed about their own standard of living, it’s our First Nations people. There are about 1,000,000 native people scattered across our country, often living on reservations in conditions ranging anywhere from sub-standard to downright abysmal. A history of abuse, neglect, and theft has been well-documented and is accepted by most Canadians.

Unfortunately, I think most Canadians presume that isn’t just history, but ancient history, and that things are hunky-dory now. Natives can claim non-taxable status and get “free” university education, they have all the opportunities in the world! Well, it’s not really as easy as all that, and while I’m not an expert on native rights claims, I do know the following:

- Canada’s standard of living is generally recognized as being in the top 5 by a host of surveys conducted each year. The surveys take in to account income, access to health care and education, employment, life expectancy, etc. Conditions for native people in Canada would rank between 65 and 75th in the world.

- Native communities suffer from higher addiction, unemployment, crime, and suicide rates, and lower education and life expectancy.

To be completely honest, I think a lot of white people are racist and just don’t give a shit about native people. If you present them with information of this nature, they just say something about ‘pull themselves up’ or ‘they choose to live like this.’ Then they tell you that native people have a ‘genetic predispositon to firewater’ and that they do it to themselves by drinking. I’m not kidding, I regularly hear this from otherwise intelligent people.

What would those same white people do if, for example, they had to boil their water before drinking it? They’d have a conniption fit. I don’t think most of us can even conceptualize the idea of not having access to clean water. I’ve been in that situation, in Bermuda after a hurricane, for about 3 days. I basically sulked about it with the rest of my spoiled housemates, until the government fixed the situation for us.

What would those same white people do if, when their daughter disappeared without a trace, the police said, “She fits the runaway demographic. That’s probably what happened. See ya!” And then when her body turned up told them, “Sorry we don’t have any leads.” White people would go berserk.

Or if the police picked some teenager from Ancaster up in the winter, drove him about 50 miles from town, and kicked him out of the car barefoot and without a jacket? Would that make white people upset? There’d be a goddamned Royal Commission looking into it.

For native people, these things happen, and with enough regularity that you have to really bury your head in the sand to think it’s not part of a bigger problem. Maybe its guilt, maybe its racism, maybe its the way the media stereotypes native people. Maybe its all of that. After all, whenever a visiting dignitary comes to Canada, some elected official from our government presents them with a soapstone carving of a seal. We must value our native population if we give Queen Victoria a soapstone seal!

White people are oblivious to the concept that the rights violations of other people are violations of us all. We’re oblivious to the concept of rights violations because frankly it doesn’t happen to us. SO, from white person to another: If First Nations people can be abused and driven in to poverty, if their land can be taken, if their traditions can be destroyed, what makes us think that the same thing can’t and won’t happen to us one day? (For non-whites, I’ll tell you what makes us think that: The Sun Never Sets On The British Empire!)

So, on to today’s rally. It was very well put together. The organizers had pamphlets explaining why they were there, what they’d be doing, and what behaviour was expected from participants. The protest was to be non-violent, discrimination and harassment free, and offered legal and medical contact information in case people needed it.

A lot of media covered the event, but I have a feeling that these issues won’t make it in to the news. Why? Because they never have before. A main goal of the rally was to urge Canada to sign the UN Declaration on the Right of Indigenous People. I don’t really know what that is, and I doubt many other non-natives do either. Whatever it is, Stephen Harper won’t sign it.

I’ve uploaded as much footage of the speakers as I could, to let them have their say rather than me presume to speak for them.

Protestors are reminded to leave these events in groups, with cameras if possible, so that they cannot be targeted by police. (As luck would have it, the one arrest after Monday’s demonstration was of a native rights activist.) I left the rally alone, and walked past at least 100 police near the demonstration area, and away from it. I was met by more at the subway entrance. And more in the subway station. There was never for one second the chance that I was getting stopped and asked what I was doing. I’m a white guy, with short hair, wearing decent clothes and a Blue Jays hat. So I was free to breeze by police like I own the place. And if they did stop me, I could just tell them my very Anglo name and show them my cute Anglo face on my government issued ID, and I’d be told thanks and probably offered an apology for disturbing my routine.

Because, like everything else, these things don’t affect white folk.

PS – biggup to the newsdude from Omni! That guy is the hardest working man in the biz! (The guy around 0:20 of the video)

The video below was all shot Monday June 21 and edited in sequential order. My commentary is included along with timed highlights.

Today was “All Out In Defense Of The Rights Of All” at Allen Gardens, marking the beginning of a week-long protest against the G8/G20. I went for a couple of reasons. One is that demonstrations at Allen Gardens in the past have been marred by violence, and I wanted to be there to capture any action that might go down. Also, I thought this would be a good litmus test to see what police presence was there in the face of what figured to be a small but committed group of anti-poverty activists.

The protest was being held in solidarity with: Queers, Drug Users, Poor, Unemployed, Indigenous, Migrant Workers, and I’m not sure who else. Upon arrival I counted about 75 participants, 25 media, and at least 50 or more police officers on bicycles.

When things kicked off, it looked like a case of preaching to the converted. The first speech was from a guy holding a giant Arizona Ice Tea (maybe it was product placement). He didn’t say much groundbreaking (capitalism is a mess) but when he said “fuck the pigs!” everybody cheered. [Video Time (VT): 1:20)] It reminded me of the reflecting pool scene in Forrest Gump a little bit.

Then a girl talked a bit before the arrival of the megaphone. She said that the oppressed were, well, oppressed (VT 1:35). A guy in a handkerchief told the police that his water would be used to fight their weapons and that they can fuck right off. This made people happy too. (VT 2:12)

At this point the protest brought out the big guns and had legendary coffee personality Juan Valdez speak about practically every injustice under the rainbow (except Starbucks, which I thought was weird). (VT 2:45) The World Cup made its presence felt, with a vuvuzuela making Mr. Arizona Ice Tea do a screwface (VT 3:18).

A freaky dude that I’ve seen around for years handing out socialist literature was there, so I got a good shot of him. (VT 3:50)

A musical interlude (VT 4:00) got the white folks clapping, in a way that only they can, was interrupted by a police skirmish in the bushes, but that turned out to be nothing.

As the march began, the police attempted to stop it, and let the group know that they were there to “facilitate the right” to demonstrate. (VT 5:00) This turned out to be at least 100 officers on bikes plus several unmarked minivans (minivans!) corralling the march and apparently stopping it from going south on Sherbourne to the security area. (VT 7:33) I don’t know if that was the group’s intention or not, but a detour was made, chants were chanted, and this went on for a while.

Local media reported on the story, although they didn’t really know what the story was (VT 7:40) The locals seemed pretty amused, some more than others. (VT 7:53)

Then the climax happened: somebody went into Esso for a slurpee. Apparently this got confused with “occupying the Esso station” and things got tense for a moment or two, although the clerk was smiling the whole time (VT 8:30). After about ten minutes, the occupation ended, and chants of “Whose Esso? Our Esso!” reverberated through the streets. Sadly, it sounded like “Whose Asshole? Our Asshole!”

And that was basically it. The police were pretty calm, some more than others. They didn’t use excessive force that I saw, but it was a clear demonstration of power, given their numbers. People were allowed to demonstrate, and nobody got out of hand.

I hope things continue like this all week.

[update - I've been sent message that an Native Sovereignity activist was targeted by police and arrested, and that there's a vigil being held at the movie set jail house. It doesn't surprise me that they've targeted one of the few natives that were there, since they've been getting screwed for centuries now.]

My observations:

1) The media had no clue what was going on. I heard the City person ask CTV, “What are they protesting?” to which the answer was “I don’t know. Everything.” A military helicopter flew overhead and Sun TV said “there’s CTV’s helicopter.” It was painted army green.

2) The police had no clue what was being protested. Again, I head a few of them say to each other “what’s this all about?” and others say “who knows?” It’s a bit sad that they aren’t given a briefer on the issues surrounding anti-capitalist agenda, but at the same time, the protest message is somewhat mixed.

3) The police are organized a bit like a high-school football team on a field trip. They were saying things like “Keep it tight!” and “Way to lead from behind, Frank!” and also they had a ‘buddy system’ – “Does everybody have their buddy!? Ok move out!” I thought that was kinda cute. They were probably a lot of jocks in school so makes sense they’d use sports-lingo.

4) Whether we live in a ‘police state’ is relative I suppose. Umar’s view is that Nigeria, Phillipines, and Cambodia are police states; Toronto, not so much. My view is that police are still more empowered here than I’d like.

5) The police and the protestors had the chance to stop for a brew at Fillmores to discuss things, and didn’t take it up. That is a shame. It was a hot day and a cold one would’ve been nice about then.

6) All in all I don’t know what was accomplished. Some local media attention was given to the protest, but not much and certainly no real issues were dealt with by corporate media in the reports I saw. But it’s good that people are out doing something, that’s more than most.

7) Hellooooo Amen! Yeah, definitely, definitely. (VT 9:29)

written by Andy

Torontonians will be familiar with the Prince Edward Viaduct (aka the bridge that goes from Bloor to the Danforth) pictured below, although newer residents might not recognize it immediately. That’s because it’s missing the safety netting added in 2003. Called the Luminous Veil, the net was constructed as a means to stop people from throwing themselves on to the highway below. Over the years the bridge had become a suicide magnet, and people were drawn to it and the idea of jumping off. (The Golden Gate Bridge, Niagara Falls, and other landmarks have the same sad distinction.)

I think as humans, we’re all vulnerable to the attraction of spectacle, some of us more than others. The Harper government is using this to its advantage, and with the $1b price tag to enact unprecedented “security measures,” it has forged a multi-pronged attack that is very effective at silencing opposition.

It’s not too different from a suicide magnet, but that’s not much fun. Let’s call it the Magic Bullet of oppression. Here’s how it works:

It Slices!

There are people that will show up to demonstrate against the G20 summit for the sole reason that it exists. Do they have an agenda? Not always. For some, the agenda is “I’m going to tear some shit down.” Others may have well-formulated ideas about how they think our society should be, or they may have some half-baked ideas. Or they might have no real ideas at all.

Some people are simply opposed to the fact that for a few days, the largest and most influential city in one of the world’s leading so-called democracies will become a de-facto police state. (And if you don’t believe me, look at Washington, Pittsburgh, and Quebec for historical precedent. Some civil liberties will exist in theory only. Peaceful assembly, habeus corpus, and freedom of speech will all be limited at best, and smashed at worst.)

This group of people represent a small minority of the unified opposition to the G20, but will garner the vast majority of media time. When CBC airs coverage of the summit, do you think they’ll be interviewing No One Is Illegal? Do you think Maude Barlow will be sitting with Peter Mansbridge for an in-depth discussion? Of course not – because instead they can show video of people in black sweatshirts throwing tear gas back at the police, being hit with sticks, and bleeding while holding each other in a loving anti-Babylon embrace.

So when John Deere, a dairy farmer in Alberta, turns on the news to see what’s going on in The Big Smoke, he’s going to see kids with purple hair and nose rings fighting with good, hardworking police officers who are just doing their job. And he’s going to say, “Those people are crazy.” And he’ll be right. For many activists, the hard work that they put in to organizing the general opposition to the G20, and the other work they do all year, will be instantly discredited by association.

So the government and the corporations need the nuts to come. It’s like a primal mating ritual. By displaying the power and violence inherent in global capitalism, the challengers will come, and there has to be a winner. And the winner is always right, and the winners write history, and the winner in this case will be the side with $1billion to spend on armed security forces.

It Dices!

So now we move on to the people that aren’t hellbent on violence, but think there is a problem inherent in global capitalism, at least in its present incarnation. Maybe they think corporations hold too much power, or we’re taxed too much and get too little participation, or that we shouldn’t be in Afghanistan. Maybe they come from other countries and have seen how free-trade exploits developing nations of their people and resources. Some of these folks devote their lives to social justice and work tirelessly on any number of issues.

This covers the majority of people in opposition to the G20. They might participate in legal, non-violent direct action, or might not even go that far. But they want to unite for a couple of days, show that there is a groundswell of opposition to globalization, and have their voices heard.

But if they read the news or use history as a guide, they’ll know there’s a good chance they’re getting their skulls cracked open, or tear gassed, or potentially deafened by sonar cannons. That’s enough to make even a vegan-transgendered-union worker from Canada’s First Nations think twice about showing up on the day.

Divide and conquer is an age-old military tactic. The extreme security measures create divisions within the G20 opposition: violent vs. non-violent; show up and get arrested and assaulted vs. stay at home and watch soccer.

For the people that do show up, a few things can happen. The first, as mentioned, is that they are made guilty by association and their ideas are discredited by the firebombing minority. The other thing that can happen, and I’ve seen it, is that they get caught up in the moment. It’s one thing to say you don’t want a physical confrontation with police, but my observation is that once you are being assaulted for no reason by state-sanctioned uniformed officers, you get really fucking mad. One minute you never thought you’d get into the mix with the nutbars, the next you’re trading blows with a SWAT team. And then you’ve instantly discredited yourself amongst the general population, not to mention your new arrest record and physical injuries.

It Chops!

Finally, the corporate media and opposition politicians get in on the act, either wittingly or unwittingly. What better way to distract people from legitimate dialogue about the G20 than to spend an obscene amount of money on vague and unnecessary items at a time when most Canadians are tightening the purse strings?

Each day in parliament, question period revolves around the cost of the summit. Seldom is a question asked about what’s actually on the G20 agenda. Seldom is an idea put forth that doesn’t perpetuate the status-quo.

Each day in the news, another tidbit is released about the overall price tag of the meeting. Government overspending is something most people can already relate to, and get outraged about. Two-million for the fake lake! Five-million for the fence! One-million for food security!

With all that print space taken up by news of overspending, there’s no room left to print any alternative views. The media have framed the G20 Summit as a legitimate meeting that hopes to achieve worldwide economic prosperity. The only question they want answered is whether it costs too much to host.

I think that the average Canadian is going to be happy asking that question, and will feel self-satisfied complaining about government overspending. They won’t hear about other issues or alternative perspectives to global capitalism. And if they do, they’re going to associate those views with the loonies in the street.

A Creamy Dessert In Just Seconds!

So to sum it up, a billion dollar security bonanza gets Harper the following: a group of violent nutbars who discredit opposition to G20 policies; a divided and weakened opposition that fears for its physical safety; and a distracted general public kept in the dark on the issues that drive opposition to globalization.

Pretty smart, in a diabolical and messed up way. The question then becomes: What move should the resistance make? We’ll look at that in the weeks to come.

The following is a part two of three part article I have written on Bob Marley. It deals with his life, culture, and a lot with the symbolic and hidden meanings of his lyrics. Please subscribe to the RSS feed for updates to this blog.

_______________________________________

Bob Marley saw the oppression from the days of slavery as merely having been replaced by poverty. On his album, Catch a Fire, the song Slave Driver attests to this when he remembers:

On the slave ship
How they brutalize our very souls
Today they say we’re free
Only to be chained in poverty
Good God I think it’s illiteracy.

By the start of the 1970s (the same time-frame as this particular song), exactly one half of the total Jamaican populations was illiterate. Marley had a clear understanding of freedom in post-colonial Jamaica; the constitutionally guaranteed freedom did not transform into any basic rights for those who lived in the ghettos. None of the fundamental restructuring imagined by the anti-colonialists, the right to employment, decent housing, running water, or education, had materialized in the wake of post colonial independence.

Marley addresses his disappointment in the school system in his song, Could You Be Loved. When he sings “don’t let them fool you, or try to school you” he was speaking of the validity of what was being taught in Jamaican schools. Schools in Jamaica used outdated literature, which taught predominantly of the white explorers and of Great Britain as the light at the turn of the century that helped Jamaican people. These texts did not speak of slavery, did not mention where many of the children descended from, and the books refer to Great Britain as a savior instead of an oppressor. Marley wanted people to realize the educational injustice that was taking place in the school system. He did not attend this schools, and in one interview spoke of the curriculum, stating, “if I was educated I would be a damn fool.”

Marely saw reggae music for Jamaicans as “the people music and reggae music is the news … News about your own self, your own history … things that they won’t teach you in school.” In his song Babylon System, Marley implores his listeners to,

Tell the children the truth …
‘Cause we’ve been trodding on
The winepress way too long
Got to rebel, Got to rebel

From the very day we left our shores
Of our father’s land
We’ve been trampled on …
Somebody got to pay for the work
We’ve done, rebel.

The wine press serves as a visual metaphor of Babylon, which is a rasta word for corrupt system. The song is meant to serve as a reminder that without equal opportunity in society, society is “sucking the blood of the sufferer,” making it easier to lose hope for “unity, peace, and freedom.” Marley attempts to get people passionate about uprising by reminding them that they have been “trampled on” every since they were first brought into slavery.

The song goes on to say, “by deceiving the people continually, me say them graduating thieves and murderers.” The murderers Marley was likely referring to were politically motivated. During the election campaigning from 1979 to 1980, which was the most heinous and violent of the island’s history, 800 Jamaicans were violently killed – most by hands of each other. Jamaica has a violent history of politically motivated warfare that dates back to the 1970s. Marley felt Jamaica to be a “very good place and a bad place. But when you have political vibes or when I stand up and see youth fighting youth … just because the youth hungry and they can’t get no jobs. And the people controlling the jobs are politicians … so … the youth killing youth because of politicians. I mean, I feel really sick in my heart about that.”

In the ancient and multicultural Babylon, people of huge diversity and from numberless nations, all

In the ancient and multicultural Babylon, people of huge diversity and from numberless nations, all lived together. Opposite to this way of life in the classical ancient world 5 ½ thousand years ago, the Christian/Old Testament tradition tells us about God’s punishment of the human arrogance, which denied any longer to follow the natural language that the creator had spoken by developing this, our world.

Genesis 11:7-9(King James Version):

7Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.

8So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.

9Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

From here we get the heritage of a myth with seven themes about Babel, containing Nebuchadnezzar, the Babylon system, City of Sin, Semiramis, the Tower, Apocalypse and linguistic confusion. All used not to tell the historical truth concerning Babylon but the truth about a civilization that needs the Babel myth in order to understand itself.

What has all this to do with language learning e. g. in Second Life (sl) anno 2009?

At BABEL Language School, the attempt is done, to bridge the gap between the cultural identities through the use of visual material both in classrooms and through the use of archetypal impacts in the environment such as our animals, but also through a new and open architecture which leads the thoughts forward to new possibilities in an enlightened world.

On one side: The creation of new virtual worlds (vws) is time expensive and object to a particular critic of giving up too many former ways of human communication, arguments similar to the day when the TV appeared. Some enter the caveat that vws push to the megalomania of putting our real world’s rules and laws out of order.

On the other hand: The use of virtual worlds has the likeable aspect of being democratically and geographically reachable. In sl for our avatar it’s also possible to achieve new horizons of personal existence, to get a new range of socializing competencies, which is build on the picture of the avatar in the corresponding part, a kind of alternative and supplemental identity; in a way “homo virtualis”.

On one side: We are bound to national and cultural vanes and, as stated in one society, we as good citizens are expected to make contributions to our society. We can’t carry out and maybe not even capture multiple ways of living as they are found on our planet. So, language borders prevent us from taking too much irrelevant information into account, which would weaken our mental health.

On the other side: The world of art has inspired to follow up the myth of Babel in numerous paintings and sculptures; the world of music has prompted pictures of people with their joy and sorrow, photographically documented world wide; and the world of music and opera have always given us common references and motivation to explore the other and to get together again. Virtual Worlds can help us to achieve that end result with language learning being one of the ways how we can explore these possibilities.

You may remember that I promised a new dubstep mix last week when I ordered some new vinyl from Red Eye.
I’m proud to say was made and uploaded Saturday, and I’m pretty pleased with it. I posted it on Twitter where I’ve had a name change. I was lil_tee_ but I’ve decided I’d stick with the theme of my blog and name it Strictlywax, the name was free so no need for underscores!
I started the mix with Examination of Time, by Babylon System and Noah D. This track was the only record that was off 140bpm, which proved to be a bit of a bugger for me because it was slightly out with the next track I dropped in. This mix was made the day after I received the records so if that’s my excuse!
The second track was Trolley Snatcha – Scattah. I’m a big fan of Trolley Snatcha, his tunes are all bangers and the kind that get stuck in your head. Never fail to get people moving.
The third song is Louder VIP by Caspa. The tune’s quite old but still on of my favourites, that’s why I bought it, you can always drop it into a set and people will recognise.
Louder VIP then drops into another Trolley Snatcha tune (getting my money’s worth out of the dubplates here!) The Future. This is a massive tune, and when I mentioned to my friends it was arriving in the post no one disagreed that it was a good choice. It is my favourite tune to drop in at the moment by far.
5th tune is Power Shower by Caspa and Rusko, so dirty it’s ironic. Been a favourite for a long time. This conveniently drops into In The Place to Be by Jakes, the two tracks have similar sounds so I felt they complimented each other quite well. The Jakes tune uses the vocal sample found at the start of “It’s Like That” by Run DMC.
Then, as an epic ending, I chose 16 Bit – Classical. Speaks for itself really. Unfortunately I had to stop this tune midway in order to keep under the 10 min limit YouTube has.

I’ve posted the video over on dubstepforum and have encouraged others to post theirs, if you’re a dubstep DJ, I suggest you do the same!

Here is the video by the way, enjoy!

The video was recorded using my N86, the audio was recorded through Magix Audio Cleaner, and the production was put together using windows movie maker.

Things got a little tense in class today. The topic of discussion was ‘Colonialism, Independence, and the Rise of Mass Schooling’ …colonial exploitation…neo-colonialism…imperialism…dependency theories…elite formation…social disorganization…paradoxical empowerment…I’ll skip the technical jargon…Let me just say, the more we talked about it, the more it was clear: Babylon System is a Fraud.

In the ‘development’ debate, people were getting passionate. It got to the point where the professor, a Palestine-raised refugee of Lebanon, asked that those of us from former colonies identify ourselves. Turned out we almost out-numbered the others. Then, she asked that those of us from so-called ‘Third World’ countries identify ourselves. I struggled, audibly so, with the label of ‘Third World’, so my hand never quite made it up. But the tension in the room was now thick: it was as though the lines had been drawn. This was no longer an academic debate, about abstract ideas and concepts – we had in effect declared our personal stake in the matters. Don’t mean to sound cliche, but the silence was loud.

And then it came out. Before I knew it, my hand was up, and the prof gave me the nod, and I was speaking. For myself, because no one else can. For my country, because no one else would. I said that I don’t know what this “alternative development trajectory” would be, but my answer to the question is YES. There is an alternative. Simply because I am determined that there is. I will not accept no. I will not accept that my nation’s Sovereignty is a farce, that we in fact only possess as much power to handle our own affairs as some International body gives us – if I accept that, then I accept that my people are somehow inferior, and are not also due the right to the freedom to choose, to determine who we are and what we stand for without fear of sanction. I am determined that the answer is YES, because if it isn’t, we might as well have stick figures as our leaders – it matters not what we decide, because at the end of the day, we are no more than pawns within the global economy. *and then I started to choke on tears from out of nowhere! and had to take a second to breathe, fan my eyes, and collect myself* I am determined that the answer is YES, because if it isn’t, the life that I want, the life that my family wants, that my people deserve, is impossible to attain…

Doan lewwe fool weself in de Carbean, hear?…lines done get draw in de sand, an I ain talkin bout Pebbles beach hay. We ain draw dem, we ain got nuh say in where dum start, nor wha part dum en’. Some ah we livin pretty, some ah we not suh hot. But best believe, ALL ah we in potta de day we get uppity an decide to cross de line pun de ‘wrong’ side. Next ting ya know, Uncle Sam gine be launchin military coups pun we brudders & sisters next door, from one ah WE own soil, all because dey had de guts to conceive something other than the approved socio-politico-economico mdoel. Oh wait…they did that already… Well de next ting dey gine come up wid is cuttin we off completely from trade an travel just because we decide we waan do tings different. Darn. They did that too! Ok, well at least they would never think to run off our leader to another country, claiming they care about the corruption, and put their own, just-as-corrupt, puppet in place. Aw shit! They been there, done that!! I know I’m not the only one seeing the pattern. I for one am not up for toeing the line. I’m not content to rest on anybody else’s laurels – I grew up singing that my people are “strict guardians of our heritage, firm craftsmen of our fate”. And I am crazy enough to believe it.

Now the way some see it, I am a success story of the systems I sometimes rant against. I went to the right schools, know some of the right people, go the right places, and I’m writing this blog from the States as I attend an Ivy League graduate school. However you want to look at it, one thing is true: duh shoulda neva leh dis lil poor girl get nuh sense.

I’m so fucking pissed off with this country…..it sucks. I guess not half as bad as some

I’m so fucking pissed off with this country…..it sucks. I guess not half as bad as some other countries…not that I know, because I am not well travelled but…..it seems even in dictatership countries they have more freedom to move and laugh and well….be free. This goverment takes the bloody piss. Not allowed to smoke in a pub, club, bar or resturant, actually not allowed to smoke anywhere regarded as an enclosed public place. Public bodies, over 700 infact are able to access our private telephone calls, oh yeah and mobile text messages. We are now paying £1 per litre for petrol. Fines for not keeping your bins in order, fines for taking your children out of school to go on holiday, fines for taking a pee in the bushes (I have heard of someone getting £80 fine for that, speed cameras EVERY FUCKING WHERE. The workers are being taxed to extinction, so now matter how hard they work, they never get above there stations……so i refuse to work and I am known as scuz. I feel like getting political and fighting, but I have no wills to be any part of any machine. My love says to save up and get the hell out of this bastard country. BIG BROTHER is not only watching your every move, now they want to listen in and perv, no doubt. I mean what right does any counciller have to my phone calls……I hate this country for what its done to other countries but I am beginning to hate it more for what it is doing to its own. People are becoming more and more like machines, no I am not paranoid…..they are running on pure, I don’t know what the word is but its like there running scripts constantly so’s not to look out of place. You see people saying there p’s and Q’s without ever even looking at you. Everyone, self included is so ungenuine. Fuck it I got banned from a launderette the other day because the dryer didn’t dry my clothes and I asked for my money back. I was polite and didn’t cuss at all but still I was banned because I stood up for myself (more to the point I caused a fuss). I think I am waffling….I know I am, I am just pissed and more so I am pissed with people moaning, coz there is plenty of them out there, but all they do is moan and never do anything about it…..our people are proper living in fear, but I but its crazy because its mostly there possessions they are afraid of losing. ya know the big wide screen plasmas and yankie delux fridges….if everyone would just rewind and grasp what is really important, like being happy with self whoever you be and living freely and not in fear, so I ask myself and all that read, what can I do to break the cycle coz I keep thinking about chaining myself up to the gates of downing street, not that I think it would do much good though, we need people and lots of them too. I think it was in the film V for Vendetta they said, “People should not live in fear of the goverments, goverments should live in fear of the People. Right On!

In the process of finding my daughter a secondary school place. So we are going back and forth betwe

In the process of finding my daughter a secondary school place. So we are going back and forth between this school and that school and trying to figure which would be the best for her education and needs. She will be there for 5-8 years, so yeah its a huge deal. I in all my wisdom I choose to go and see the better schools in the area, ya know the ones with more…………

I am starting to think that I have made a mistake. I truley want the best for my daughter and I would like her to grow up to be a free thinking happy individual. You just don’t get that in mainstream school. The problem lies with the fact that we are taught not to achive but to fail. Ya know if your not in the top xyz you are scuz, if you don’t achive 10 a-c grades your stupid, if you don’t have parents with x amount of ££££££££££ in the bank your a loser. I thought by looking at the “better” schools that kind of mentallity would be erradicated but no, it would seem it thrives more.

So now with 4 days to go before the official deadline for close of applications, we are looking round some underfunded schools in the hope that my cheeky bright caring daughter will have a better chance at keeping some of her own personality and will not be brainwashed into thinking that by nature we are failures but I got to tell you now, I think what ever school she does go to its going to be tough.

There is so much pressure on the young to do this and conform to that. I can’t take it seriously. Maybe I am the one who is scuz but all I want for anyone especally my girl is to be free from anxiety and pressure and to beam love and light.

lordy me, apparantly now I am a criminal. Got done for shoplifting. I stole a computer hardrive from

lordy me, apparantly now I am a criminal. Got done for shoplifting. I stole a computer hardrive from Tescos and got caught. DOH!

Only problem is I has some cannabis and speed on me too. What prize plonker for carrying them on me whilst doing crime. I know, that’ll be the speed. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t even do speed all the time, not even nearly all the time.

Anyway back to the story, had 6 security officals from tesco, storm troop me into a room, sat there, made a nusence of myself for the hell of it because they wouldn’t let me stand up, so I did anyway and trotted around the room. I can’t beleive how seriously they take themselves. Consumer Security gaurds really are asses. Waited for babylons finest to turn up and they carted me back to the police station. Had my fingerprints done on some nifty machine thats scans you. *yeah no more black ink* and had my DNA taken by swabing my mouth. Had two women strip search me, even though I had already surrended my drugs……….and got put into a cell for 4.5 hours.

Gees, the savoy really has nothing on these places. Got onto the bed for a kip, placed myself under the blanket and relized just how scuzzy and grim the place really was. Got on the floor and layed there instead. Got carted up to see the doctor. Got sent back to cell. Kept thinking I am turning into my mother but relized after I am nothing like my mother………phew. After all that I got let off with a shoplifting and cannabis caution.

Apparently, the speed wasn’t even speed, they tested it and don’t know what it was. Got stitched I did. Well I knew I was a lightweight but even so, could it be baking poweder that got me high? Tell ya pirates everywhere. Was pleased to get let out and speak to my love. He was great, went down to see him and spent the night on the cut, *cut is pikey speak for canal and not self harming* , got back home and found my home had been searched by the police, all my private personal things out of the draws and a search warrant left on the bed………..and I say CHANT DOWN BABYLON!

I am very concious of never hurting anyone and now on record they have me pinned right down to the composition of my entity because I stole from a shop that made 2.2billion in profits last year………..I tell you, ya only make that kind of profit by being a proper criminal.

Anyway, I experienced something new and it was a big mind expansion. What real horrors are out there? We all take freedom so much for granted, but Babylon system can come lock you up and take away your freedom for the smallest of mister meaners. People full of darkness and hate can take you and lock you up but what really gets my goat is those out there that are supposed to help us, the medical profession I am talking about, can lock you up just for having a different prospective.

I know it sounds crazy but I searched for a way out of that cell and after checking the door and window realized there was none, so I made paper aeroplanes, people and boats out of bog roll because I knew eventually I would be let out and allowed to go home.

I have been truly blessed in my life so far.

THANK YOU.
