Here we go. Once again we have another year zooming by, but unlike other years, when I look back at this one I think “HOLY F*CKING SH*T!!!!” To me, it seems like so many people around me are more than ready to say goodbye to the year 2009. I can truly honestly say that I don’t share that sentiment in the slightest. It is hard to explain why without making me sound like I am boasting, but I am going to do it anyway.

I still can’t believe the awesomeness that was this trip. I started the trip with two amazing friends and ended up with even more wonderful friends. From the 14 hours bus rides, the two day boat journey down the Mekong, the sickness, the craziness that is Bangkok, floating the Viang Vieng river, crashing a motorcycle in Laos, eating amazing food in Vietnam, meeting the most wonderful people in Cambodia, exploring the ruins of Angkor Wat and relaxing on the beautiful islands of Thailand. So. Incredibly. Amazing.

I spent a month in Africa

Spending time with one of my best friends Tfaith, meeting and becoming secret lovers with his future wife, conquering Table Mountain, camping the Garden Route with a backpack and a blanket, conquering pickpockets and scary alleyways, introducing South Africa to power hour and having my life changed in a small township outside Cape Town. Africa…..there are no words to how incredible it was.

I worry that women’s desperate need to get married/settle down/pop out babies has caused us to loss all sense of rational behavior. In that, we take the first loser that comes along with exploring options – whoever those maybe.

For instance, a local bachelor party here in the Garden City recently got a bit out of control. A group of young men took to the town, got kicked of Hooters (the fact that we have a Hooters amazes me everyday), headed into downtown Missoula where the groom preceded to grope a girl at a bar, get slapped by said girl, then punched said girl in the face. You’d think that’s where this story would end, but no. They headed to another establishment, picked a fight with the bartenders and were promptly ejected from the establishment. Their limo driver, in fear for his life/what this carousers would do next, began recording them with a video camera. That didn’t end well. The drunk mob then turned on him – he was at least smart enough to be carrying a small pistol. Surprisingly, no one was shot. Not too much later the Missoula PD arrived and they were arrested. But we’re still not done. The groom then headed butted the a cop on the way to the car.  Seriously? You’re in handcuffs, where do you think your gonna go? His groomsmen are stand up guys though. One of them managed to hide the video camera the limo drive took the footage on, then spit on the cop and refused to tell him where it was.

And that guy is engaged! He asked and some poor girl said yes. I heard a rumor his future bride is pregnant, but I don’t really see that as an excuse to marry him. Even more troubling is that he is procreating – his genes will live on. Great.

Zach Galafianakis, Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms suffer the effects of The Hangover.

The bachelor party is an ages-old tradition, a rite of passage in which single men transition from being men to being grooms. It’s the last hurrah for close friends as they lose one of their own to marriage, bidding goodbye forever to his independence and his cojones.

Such is the situation for Doug Billings (Bartha), whose groomsmen plan on taking him to Vegas for a night to remember. Phil Wenneck (Cooper) is the irresponsible one, married and missing the life of a single alpha male. He hopes to reclaim that, at least for one night. Stu Price (Helms) is a henpecked dentist, mortally afraid of his girlfriend (Harris) who is a world-class bitch, but he’s determined to propose to her at the wedding anyway – with his grandmother’s engagement ring, no less. Along for the ride is Alan (Galifianakis), the obese brother of the bride who has a thing about recreational drug use and gambling.

The quartet raise a glass of Jagermeister on the roof of Caesar’s Palace, then head out for a night of debauchery. When they wake up in their hotel room the next morning, they find it completely trashed. They have absolutely no memory of what occurred the night before. Stu is missing a tooth and wearing a wedding ring. The groom-to-be is nowhere in sight, and there’s a tiger in their bathroom. And where did that baby come from?

The boys have a limited amount of time to piece together what happened during their lost night and find the missing groom so they can get him to the wedding on time. Along the way they have to dodge a diminutive Chinese gangster (Jeong) with a real rude streak, two dim-witted but sadistic cops and Mike Tyson, owner of the tiger in question. Time and the odds are against them, but this is Vegas and anything can happen.

Director Phillips (Old School) and writers Jon Lucas and Scott Moore (Ghosts of Girlfriends Past) have hit a home run. This is one of the best-written comedies in years. Nearly every situation is funny as is most of the dialogue. Phillips has cast an excellent ensemble, mostly from television, and is rewarded with some career-making performances, starting with Galifianakis, who resembled John Belushi physically, but has a personality all his own. He will be catapulted into a stratum with guys like Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill and Jason Segel – and who knows, maybe alongside guys like Steve Carrell and Jim Carrey.

This is also a career-making turn for Cooper, who shows potential as a leading man, and has since his turn in the TV series “Alias.” Here he finally fulfills that potential and makes good use of his considerable charm. The character of Phil could very easily descend into obnoxious cliché, but Cooper makes him believable. Helms rises above his work on “The Office” and shows that he has far more depth and range than most give him credit for.

I have always liked Heather Graham as a comedic actress since her appearance in the Austin Powers series, and she also shows remarkable range as well. The stripper with a heart of gold is a hoary cliché in the film industry, and Graham pulls it off without sinking to formula. Her Jade is a woman with dreams and hopes who has no reasonable chance to climb beyond where she is right now, and yet she still believes. There’s a little bit of poignancy to the role that the likable Graham is perfect for.

This is a movie that has flown beneath the radar, overshadowed by much higher-profile releases, and proves to be a pleasant surprise. The critical praise for the movie has been loud and well-deserved. To be fair, there are a few false steps that the movie takes, primarily in the character of the bitchy girlfriend who might have fit the film’s ethos a bit better if she had some redeeming quality. She’s there mainly to serve as a comic foil for Helms, who doesn’t actually need one here. And, quite frankly, this is a guy’s movie. A lot of women may not necessarily find this as funny or as clever as men do.

Still, any criticisms you might level at the movie have to be minor. I’m all for pleasant surprises and The Hangover is just that, a movie with a premise that in less capable hands could be just crudeness for the sake of being crude. Instead, we get a marvelous comedy that makes you laugh without asking you to leave your brain behind. Color me impressed.

REASONS TO GO: Breakout performances by Cooper, Helms and especially Galifianakis. A smartly-written comedy that relies on believable characters and outrageous situations for its humor.

REASONS TO STAY: Definitely a movie intended for men; some women may find it offensive and not funny.

FAMILY VALUES: There is nothing remotely suitable for family audiences.  

TRIVIAL PURSUITS: The characters stay in room 2452, which adds up to 13, which is meant to be a theme for the bad luck the characters experience throughout the movie.

NOTABLE DVD FEATURES: On the 2-disc deluxe edition, there is an interactive Map of Destruction which details where the movie was filmed. There are also pictures taken by the missing camera (which has been heavily promoted in the advertising of the DVD). There is also a feature on actor Ken Jeong and how he developed his character.

PROSTITUTION STING RESULTS IN 8 ARRESTS  

(HOUSTON, TX) – Investigators with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office 

(HCSO) Special Investigations Unit arrested 8 people during what attendees believed to be a bachelor party. The event was actually a prostitution sting. 

On Wednesday, December 9, 2009, the Criminal Investigations Bureau’s Special Investigations Vice Unit held a mock bachelor party in north Harris County. The unit invited suspects from two targeted groups believed to have been soliciting young women, some of whom were possibly minors, for prostitution. Undercover investigators contacted the groups and negotiated for them to bring young girls to the party, specifically for providing sex for a fee to the individuals at the party. In addition, undercover investigators solicited women on popular, mainstream Internet sites to attend the party for the same purpose. The “party” was held at 714 FM 1960 West. Once the suspects arrived, undercover investigators initiated prostitution investigations and arrested five females and three males. One minor was also detained. 

The Special Investigations Vice Unit utilized multiple divisions within the HCSO such as Narcotics, Administrative Support, Auto Theft, Human Trafficking and Rescue Alliance (HTRA), Patrol, Reserves and Transportation to effectively and safely complete the operation. The FBI/ Human Trafficking Alliance was also involved due to the possibility of minors being trafficked for prostitution.

If there’s one thing that defines me, it’s the need to experience life as fully and diversely as possible, and the last 48 hours have been incredible on that front. Friday night I went to a Christmas party in Green Bay, where some of my oldest friends were. There’s nothing like old friends and a couple of bottles of wine to get grounded and figure out where you’re going. We swapped old stories and new ones, too, telling stories about who we each thought we were at the time and who others thought we were and how those don’t really match up at all. And for the first time, I told of my intuitions/visions and energy experiences. I never had because I didn’t think they could handle it, but they did and it’s sort of liberating to have my oldest friends know something about me I’ve long kept secret. In fact, I’ve even decided to try to understand and learn more about it all instead of keeping walls up like I always had. I feel like I’m ready to do that for the first time in my life.

Saturday, I reconnected with one of my longest standing passions, snowboarding. No one else could make it out so it was just me, my board, my MP3 player and the hills. It was cool like that though because snowboarding is a spiritual experience for me, and in my view, spirituality is better tapped into solo. In fact, I was sort of annoyed by having to ride up the hill with arrogant yuppies who think they’re all that. But I’m not sure the awkward silences of the pubescent 12-to-14-year-olds were much better, lol.

Speaking of teens, it would seem that I am now one of the “old ladies on a board.” Back when I started boarding 12 years ago, I was one of few girls boarding in the area, period. Now there are plenty of girls … just few to none my age. I am always amused by the reactions I get when I go, especially lately. I can’t afford to keep up on the latest outerwear trends, so I keep it basic … black boarding pants, sweatshirt and vest, knit hat and sunglasses … and so my clothing further adds to the anomaly people apparently are unsure of how to process. Mostly, I think all the dudes young and and older don’t take me seriously until I get my game on. I giggle inside as I see their looks change from bemused dismissal or mockery to respect … occasionally I hear whistles and awe-laced “dude.” I have to admit, I’ve long enjoyed shattering people’s idea of what is or should be.

Yesterday was a growth day for me, too, because I’ve made significant headway in eradicating that ugly animal fear. Once fear laced my actions, inhibiting me from growing very quickly as a boarder, but yesterday I took the toughest rides on black diamonds and fear didn’t exist. When I took a spill, I didn’t allow it to make me retreat into safety. Instead I took the run again, learning from what I did wrong the time before. This approach resulted in pure, unadulterated freedom, and I want to be diligent in applying it to other areas of my life.

The night ended with phenomenal Greek cuisine, theater (In the Heights) and a rousing night cap at Anduzzi’s, where strippers were accompanying a bachelor party and doing things in a bar where clothes are the norm that were out of the norm at a central Wisconsin bar to say the least. Even more entertaining was the look of shock and awe on my sweet, innocent friend’s face as it was all going down. The bachelor party harassed us to hit them in various places … the dude who had the most success won an award. I slapped a guy in the face (gently) because he asked nicely but none of us would give the much sought-after south-of-the-border kick needed to complete their mission. Before we left, a marine (I think that was the uniform) indulged us with a hilarious performance of some ’90s rap track and we turned down an invite to join the bachelors in their limo SUV. Somehow (shocking, I know) we felt the invite came with certain expectations. Ummm … no thanks. Why their team of strippers wasn’t enough I don’t know. The more the merrier maybe?

Finally, as we went our separate ways, my friend and I drag raced zero to 60. She is a former race car driver and just got a new (used) Monte Carlo. I’ve been dying to try my 2002 supercharged Buick Regal GS against hers. I bought the car because of the engine, and it didn’t disappoint. The Monte didn’t even stand a chance.

At intermission, the usher informed us we could not bring our Holiday coffee back in, so that left Sam and me one option ... chug.

We ate at Tapas before theater and it was incredible although we sort of had to eat quickly to make it to the show on time.

My innocent friend was shocked by the antics of the strippers accompanying the bachelor party ... awe, cute.

The latest TMI Thursday post involves vomiting yet again (but wait there’s more!) This is a request from the wife unit. It is the story of the immediate aftermath of our bachelor/bachelorette party. I chose this one because as the wifey said it has a bit of everything. There’s intrigue, danger, vomiting, love, drinking, and even attempted murder. Anydiddle here we go.

As I said up there this is the immediate aftermath, as in when we got home. The next day was infinitely better with my “best man” Lauren and I sitting in her car in the parking lot of CVS. This however is not that story. It is not the story of the fun of the night, the heavy (heavy!) drinking or even the getting peed on story. That may be a TMI for another night. No this starts with me stumbling up the stairs to our apartment with the wife and sister. I was clutching my notebook like it was my child. I will go back in time for a second. The Rizza the best “best man” ever had planned on getting me wasted—like a true friend—of course she succeeded in getting herself wasted too. The problem was every time I went back into the bar (we were out on the balcony) someone else gave me a shot. Now I suppose part of the problem was I made my way to the bar even when I was going to the bathroom. Needless to say I was wasted. I was beyond that. I had never drank so much in my life—there was at least 10 shots and who knows how many drinks—how I didn’t die I don’t know. Anyfiddle, we get upstairs and my wife (who is drunk too) and I are in the bathroom. I get completely buck ass naked and sit on the toilet to pee. She of course hovers over the bathtub because sitting in the tub is her answer to anything and everything. As I sit there on the toilet I begin to projectile vomit some of the nastiest looking black shit ever—mostly probably the Zwack which I forced the bartender to give me though it was closed. SOOOO I’m sitting there naked spewing this X-Files black oil alien like stuff. Here is what it may have been like:

The wife who is drunk but not so drunk as to be terrified by what is happening decides to stick me in the tub. I’m naked, spewing X-Files like stuff and now in the tub. She wanted to take care of me—such true love. Now she wasn’t sure what to do so as I’m sitting there being slapped by the water she starts stuffing saltines in my mouth. I mean stuffing them in there. I’m not chewing them before she’s stuffing more in. My mouth is dry and the salty bitches are piling up in my mouth and crumbling down my stomach. I’m coughing them up and even as I am she keeps a stuffing away. So yes days before our nuptials my best man and I tried to kill me and then my soon to be wife in an attempt to help me tried to kill me. She put me to bed and then cleaned up the X-Files black oil stuff that I can only imagine was slithering toward whatever human it could find to enter. Now that is Love. One last thing I really don’t throw up that much!
