Today on Alphabet City: Jon Paul’s superpower surfaces during Thanksgiving

Growing up in Texas, the dishwasher held a special place in our house—it was a modern miracle worthy of our respect. And Aunt Shirley, my mother’s oldest sister, was the Master. Her loading skills were legendary. In short, she was a Dishwasher Superhero, and I looked forward all year to that one time when I would get to apprentice at her side—Thanksgiving.

Regardless of the rotating location of the family feast—from Houston to Baton Rouge—once the tummies were stuffed, Aunt Shirley leapt into action. While my cousins settled in to watch the Cowboys football game on TV, I snuck into the kitchen to watch Aunt Shirley work her magic.

She spun around the kitchen like a ballerina—in went the greasy turkey platter, the grimy green bean casserole dish, and the dessert plates smudged with pumpkin goodness. Next, she loaded the salad bowls, flatware and ice tea glasses. Before adding the soap and closing the doors, Aunt Shirley paused and winked at me sitting on a kitchen stool.

“What about the copper carrots?” I asked, pointing to a dish with the remains of one of my mother’s least successful contributions, a murky marinade of BBQ sauce, ketchup and brown sugar.

Given the packed dishwasher, I couldn’t imagine one more item being able to fit.

“Want me to wash that in the sink?” I volunteered.

Aunt Shirley smiled and shook her head.

“By hand? Over my dead body! Now you listen to me, young man. Everything can fit in the dishwasher. Watch closely. It’s just a matter of rearranging.”

With a flick of her apron, Aunt Shirley turned to do battle like Wonder Woman. A wave of her hand over the coffee mugs and a slight tug to the trifle bowl, and suddenly there was space for the errant dish. After Aunt Shirley punched the button, the machine roared to life with the familiar sound of pulsating water, and she gave me a kiss on the forehead.

“Remember, it’s just a matter of rearranging.”

For ten years in Alphabet City, I cooked Thanksgiving without the assistance of a mechanical dishwasher. And when we moved to our very own Manhattan brownstone, the thing I most looked forward to was not the tripling of available bathrooms, not the floors of sun-filled rooms, or even the Mexican-tiled patio with outdoor fireplace. No, the thing I most dreamed about was the GE Nautilus 2000 we had installed.

A few months after moved, 18 people joined us for our first Pilgrims’ feast. Standing in the kitchen surveying the plates of damage, Juan Pablo looked worried.

“There’s no way that’s all going in there,” he said.

I rolled up my sleeves and channeled my inner Aunt Shirley.

“Don’t worry. I’ll handle this. It’s all just a matter of rearranging.”

Today on Alphabet City: Overshadowed by Juan Pablo on Thanksgiving, Jon Paul feels like Charlie Brow

Today on Alphabet City: Overshadowed by Juan Pablo on Thanksgiving, Jon Paul feels like Charlie Brown.

In the debut posting of the series Kitchen Knightmares, I acknowledged that no one wants to hear me whine about being married to a chef. But I really get worked up about the issue when Thanksgiving approaches because none of my guests ever give me any credit for cooking the meal. Since Chef Juan Pablo hails from Mexico City, I usually bar him from the kitchen claiming that only an American can appreciate the meal’s historical underpinnings. I’m not interested in his South of the Border suggestion to add chipotles to my green bean concoction. Usually, he’s happy to escape the kitchen, and always willing to accept the compliments when our friends remark year after year, “Chef’s done it again!”

I’m like the Charlie Brown of Thanksgiving. Try as I might, I just can’t get through to our friends that I spend days preparing our annual spread. While fellow Texan Angela gets kudos for her trio of pies, I get nada from friends for my buffet of casseroles and cranberries. It’s odd that Chef gets all credit for the food, because in the beginning my dishes were straight-up white-trash—not at all things they’d expect from Juan Pablo.

“My goodness, everything sure is brown. And starchy,” observed my Australian friend Rebecca when she first joined us about eight years ago.

Rebecca worked for the UN and was accustomed to more exotic flavors it seemed. She had a difficult time distinguishing between the line-up of Pyrex dishes offering down home casseroles made with Cream of Mushroom soup: broccoli-rice, green bean, and potato. Later, she tried to hide the sour look on her face when she reluctantly tasted a frothy pistachio green concoction known ominously as Watergate Salad. At that point, I made a vow to break from my Texas ways and embrace some more “elegant” Yankee traditions.

That’s when I turned to Bon Appétit for help. Over time, their November issue has provided easy-to-make upscale suggestions, many of which have become part of my repertoire. No more canned cranberries—my crowd-pleasing recipe: Spiced Cranberry Sauce with Zinfandel, my stained page torn out from BA, Nov. 2001. After years of therapy, I’m adding an interpretation of a vegetable that I’ve hated for decades: brussels sprouts—the unpleasant smell of which I associate with my sister Paige’s after-school snack doused in vinegar. BA’s advice? Make them into a slaw—Brussels Sprout Slaw with Mustard Dressing and Maple Glazed Pecans!

This year, we celebrate a very special moment at the table—it will be Chef’s first Thanksgiving as a certified United States citizen. In honor, I’m tearing down my wall and am allowing him into the kitchen on this holiday. His first suggestion? Spice up the turkey and gravy. At first I was suspect. But then while I was flipping through an old BA, just a few pages down from my cranberry specialty, I spotted a recipe for a Citrus-Glazed Turkey with Chipotle Gravy. A little immigrant influence never hurt anyone—why that’s what has made this country great! Viva America!

The only downside? A jazzed-up turkey is exactly the kind of food our guests expect from Chef, not me. And that means no one will ever give me my hard-earned kitchen credit. Good grief, a Charlie Brown Kitchen Knightmare for sure.

I would like to start out by saying my name is Jennifer Peebles. I’m a game production student

I would like to start out by saying my name is Jennifer Peebles. I’m a game production student at the International Academy of Design and Technology on the verge of graduation. I have learned to love making games out of necessity seeing as how it takes every ounce of free time you have ever held dear and shreds it into a thousand pieces.

I’ve found my niche in environment modeling. It allows for a great creative outlet and a tremendous challenge at the same time. I have a decent amount of formal experience in 2D art and always wanted to incorperated that into my career. Unfortunately I never let myself consider “fun” or “enjoyment” as a career. I was certain I would be a Doctor for the first 18 years of my life. Don’t get me wrong though, I did consider the challenge and fullment of medicine “fun”, just in an obviously different way.

It took a year in college before I realized I wanted to have a family outside of my career and seeing as how the doctors I shadowed were only married to their job (as their spouses would admit) I needed a new plan. I have always loved video games. Starting with the Atari, I have owned nearly every system to be produced. After a friend put the idea in my head of making that into a career, I was hooked. The rest is 3 years of tears and determination to get me where I am today. (This took much more courage and confusion than I may have alluded to however the full story would take more pages than anyone would be willing to read)

START HERE: Dear Stock Photography Professionals, Amateur Photographers, Illustrators and Graphic De

START HERE:

Dear Stock Photography Professionals, Amateur Photographers, Illustrators and Graphic Designers

“Success” is relative …

It was just over two years ago I started to research how to sell my photography when I caught “The Bug” to start selling my images online. In September of 2007 I decided to dedicate two years to explore the possibilities of the incredible world of stock photography. I felt that two years would be enough time to give me a chance to sink my teeth into training myself from any and all sources and to get up to speed, starting basically from scratch, on this rapidly expanding and growing industry. At the time I had never even picked up a photography book or taken a photoshop tutorial. It is now two years later, and while I feel I have come very far and achieved many successes, I find that there is always more to learn. I absolutely love this work !

In July of 2007 I relocated to Washington State after accepting a transfer to work at The Boeing Company’s Commercial Airplane Headquarters in Renton, Washington just outside of Seattle, Washington. Analyzing Market Research was my specialty. Driving out to Washington from Colorado during the course of my relocation I captured a few thousands pictures on a Canon SD750 camera. At that time I was interested in seeing if I could market my images by selling prints of them at festivals, art shows and galleries. It was during this period of research that I discovered the world of commercial stock photography.

My first site that I was approved as a contributor at was BigStockPhoto in September of 2007. For that reason alone I will always have a special place in my heart for them. I found that their entry criteria was not as strict as some of the larger sites. The same applies for 123rf so these are both excellent places to explore if you are interested in selling your photography online. Recently BigStockPhoto was acquired by the subscription based microstock giant Shutterstock .

Stock Photography Sites are often referred to by short abbreviations. It was more than a little confusing to myself when I first started researching microstock on the various forums so I will list a few that I plan to reference here for you now:

SS    =   Shutterstock

IS    =   iStockPhoto

DT   =   Dreamstime

FT   =   Fotolia

BSP =   BigStockPhoto

MP  =   MostPhotos

My first sale came from the second site that I was approved at as a contributor which was DT. I initially sought out DT during a time when BSP was halting uploading over the weekends. This is just one small example of the kind of roadblocks one faces when it comes to trying to build up an approved portfolio at a microstock agency.

At its most basic level, getting started in microstock photography are just a few simple steps …

Check-out the various stock photography links on this blog

Browse the microstock sites and become familiar and get a feel for the photography on them

Prepare 3-10 of your best images in accordance to the respective standards of the site you wish to join

Submit your applications to become a contributor (a.k.a photographer) and get approved to contribute

Shoot Pictures. Post Process Images in Photoshop. Upload Photos to all sites for review. Repeat.

Collect the revenue from sales made each month across all sites over the years for the life of the image. Large subscription based sites such as Shutterstock will ultimately produce daily sales for you after your portfolio of approved images grows to a modest size of a few hundred images however credit based sale sites such as iStockPhoto will yield higher commissions at a much slower rate. There is constant debate over which is best. Most stock photographers submit all of their work to each of the most profitable microstock sites.

Receive your payout after reaching a threshold for each respective site. (ex. $50, $75, $100)

I believe a quick recap of where my interest in photography as a child came from will prove insightful to some readers …

Photography had been an interest of mine since I first began taking snapshot photos with “hand me down” cameras from my parents I was about 9 or 10 years old. It was probably around 1979-1981 ish when I first started using 110 film cameras that I usually borrowed from my mother. The first camera that I actually owned was a Polaroid One Step instant camera. I remember having to pay for my own film. Early on I mowed lawns and later on I worked for the family gas station starting at the age of 10 working for $2.00 / hour. At the very least I know I was responsible for paying for the cartridges of film which were very expensive for around ten photos if I remember correctly. This limited my picture taking ability as I was saving up to pay my way for a $750.00 30-Day bus tour trip across the country with the Boy Scouts to the National Jamboree in Virginia in 1981. Since the film for my camera was so expensive my mother allowed me to borrow her new at the time Sony Disc Camera. I took both cameras on my 30-day bus tour “Reunion with History” to the Jamboree.

The Statue of Liberty was getting a makeover during our tour but it was still amazing and one of my favorite subjects. However, when I went to the top of the “Twin Towers” World Trade Center, that was my favorite scene. The bridges and skyscrapers of New York City fostered my love for architecture and structures which I later studied at length. I plan to dig up a couple of those first photos of mine from that trip, scan them, and post them here as a point-of-reference …

By Marie Morelli / The Post-Standard

October 30, 2009, 10:58AM

Syracuse, NY — Judging by the 100-plus people who showed up Thursday at a public forum to learn about the shale gas drilling process known as fracking, there’s a thirst for knowledge about the topic.

The information session at May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society in Syracuse was sponsored by environmental groups, so the speakers were uniformly against the practice. (Read my story about the event.)

Among the speakers Thursday was Ron Bishop, a chemistry professor at the State University College at Oneonta, who said he was there to impart information, not take a position. Nevertheless, he identified a bunch of environmental hazards associated with fracking. Here’s a version of the presentation he delivered earlier this year in Bath, N.Y.

As Bishop explained it, Upstate New York has rich natural gas deposits in Utica Shale, found east and south of Onondaga County, and Marcellus Shale, found in the Southern Tier and Catskills. It’s not so easy to get the gas out of the ground. That’s where hydraulic fracturing — commonly “fracking” or “hydrofracking” — comes in.

To collect the gas, drillers shoot under high pressure millions of gallons of water, chemicals and sand into a well, which breaks up the shale rock and creates microscopic pathways for the gas to escape.

Here are some links to learn more about fracking.

» Chesapeake Energy says it won’t drill in the Catskills, where New York City’s water comes from, in response to opposition from environmental groups. Here’s the AP story.

» The state Department of Environmental Conservation’s Marcellus shale page.

» DEC has proposed regulations on gas drilling operations. (Read the summary in a DEC press release; read the full version.)

» An accounting of land in Tompkins County that has been leased for gas drilling can be found here. An effort to map gas leases in Onondaga County is being undertaken by the Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation.

Gas drilling companies will try to convince you that using up to 6-million gallons of water for frac

Gas drilling companies will try to convince you that using up to 6-million gallons of water for fracing one gas well doesn’t amount to a massive amount of water. Even if they are successful in making that argument with you, the next topic becomes flowback or brine. What do you do with the crap that comes back out of the ground?

Somewhere between 30% and 70% of the water used for hydro-fracing a gas well returns to the surface as flowback. In addition to the frac fluids added by the gas drilling companies, this water picks up other contaminants from deep in the Earth (~ 7,000 feet deep) with one of the most notable being salt.

These fluids contain sodium and calcium salts, barium, oil, strontium, iron, numerous heavy metals, soap, radiation and other components. This fluid combination becomes brine wastewater, and tanker trucks hauling it are labeled with a RESIDUAL WASTE placard. Treated brine is also sold for deicing and other applications that utilize calcium chloride, often being applied to roadways.

RESIDUAL WASTE placard

Brine wastewater is difficult and expensive to treat, one of the same reasons we aren’t using much ocean water for agriculture and residential applications. The saltiness of this wastewater creates a high level of TDS (total dissoved solids). Incomplete processing of this brine wastewater, especially when dumped into rivers used for drinking water, creates a high TDS situation that causes drinking water treatment plants problems, like Trihalomehtanes. High TDS water reacts with chlorine when it is processed.

In other parts of the United States, gas drilling operations dispose of their wastewater deep in the ground, by using deep injection wells. However, the geology around Marcellus Shale doesn’t lend itself as well to accepting deep injections, so the wastewater gets dumped back into Pennsylvania watersheds. Early on in Marcellus drilling, many municipal treatment plants were accepting this briny wastewater that weren’t equipped to process it. Add that situation to low river levels due to drought and you begin to have real problems.

OK … Now we have received a looooot of suggestions on how we should continue this game design.

OK … Now we have received a looooot of suggestions on how we should continue this game design.

Some of the most important ones include us stopping the implementation we are doing with DirectX and the DigiPen university documents and start working with real game engines and frameworks..

including using slimDirectX or XnA for Microsoft. Maybe even OpenGL & C++ for playstation and wii.

But I think we will decide how to continue because each way has its advantages over the others

like if we continue with the normal DirectX then we are mostly learning the language C#, which is a good idea because since we are mostly thinking of designing for the Xbox 360 & it is implemented using visual studios, it will provide us with a strong programming background. Although using XnA immediately will make us work on “VIDEO GAME DESIGN”. We still have other options, but we will talk about our path later

BACKGROUND

Now, in case we stick to what we are already working on I designed our simple background for the game

It’s still not in the program itself, but its ready whenever we want to use it

Anybody reading this has already gathered that I am a PR student. But let’s go beyond that, shall we?

My name is Alisha and I am a senior at CSU-Fresno. I originally wanted to major in business but had such a positive experience with the public relations department when I transferred that I felt it more strongly suited me.

Just last week, I made it official and added an English minor to my degree. So on top of an insane amount of writing for my major, I’ve willingly added a stack of additional reading materials to my study pile. The good news is I enjoy writing and am such an avid reader that I have been called everything from a bookworm to an addict. I wouldn’t argue if somebody were to suggest that I had added the minor in order to have an excuse to read more novels. Yes, I am supporting a habit.

My dream job, and what I answer whenever anybody asks, “And what do you want to do with a PR degree?” (and the usually do) is to work as a personal manager in the music business. I would love to help bands work to fulfill their dreams.

In addition to school, I volunteer with the Muscular Dystrophy Association. I’ve been involved with them for about six or seven years now and am now an intern as well. It’s been one of the best experiences I’ve ever had, from working the phones and doing clerical work, to being a camp counselor in the summer.

I also work as the Fresno TV Examiner at Examiner.com where I get the chance to write about and publish the latest Television news. And of course, I started this blog in case two in-class writing assignments a week and those articles weren’t enough. What can I say? I do enjoy writing.

If there are any burning questions that anybody has for me, please feel free to leave a comment and ask.

Tune in next time.

So yeah, I’ve been extremely busy with deadlines and assignments for the course I’m taking in Creative Arts & Media. I enjoy browsing wallpapers, but lately I’ve had to enjoy Adobe Flash, ActionScript 3.0, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Soundbooth, games-history and methodical learning in game/project development instead.

All the wallpapers are, as usual, in 1900×1200 resolution. If you don’t like that you can find your own wallpapers.

I think I must explain… in continuation of my previous entry. I have been a little preoccupied

I think I must explain… in continuation of my previous entry.

I have been a little preoccupied this past week with endless preparation for my studies… but I have found you again. I have added my 2009 series that was also my Masters body of work on my artist website here. I think it is fairly obvious where my immediate inspiration has come from in this series. This inspiration is hysteria, the psychosomatic illness in vogue in 19th century Paris. I have been absolutely fascinated with the Iconography produced by Dr J. M. Charcot as it’s almost to fantastic to believe. The histrionics displayed are vivid, so there has obviously been much debate as to whether or not the women were actually performing for the doctors rather than suffering from a particularly romantic disease. There is this most fantastic quote I found during my research it goes something like this;

“There doesn’t seem to be anything medicine has not said about hysteria:

it is multiple, it is one, it is nothing; it is an entity, a malfunction, an illusion;

it is true and deceptive; organic or perhaps mental; it exists, it does not exist.”[1]

Hysteria seems to be this historical paradox of the human condition. It is, but it isn’t. It is everything, it is nothing. Have a look at some of the images from the Iconography below.

from the Iconographie de la Salpetriere, 1878

from the Iconographie de la Salpetriere, 1878

I take a lot of inspiration from 19th century medical photography. I saw an exhibition in Paris last year at the Ecole Nationale Superieure Des Beaux-Arts entitled Figures du Corps. There I saw ‘in real life’ (lol) some of Duchenne’s photographs documenting facial expression. This is them:

from Duchenne's Mecanisme de la Physionomie Humaine, 1862

Anyway my internet is really annoying me at the moment, so I will leave it at that for the moment.

Here’s a partially formed thought: For any enterprise with an on-line product/service or for any en

Here’s a partially formed thought: For any enterprise with an on-line product/service or for any enterprise that does business on-line (I think that’s pretty much all of them by now), a meaningful understanding of User-Product-Service Activity will very quickly (if not already) become a core value proposition. Understanding what users & customers are doing, when & why; how is a product being used, when & why; Two key words here are activity and enterprise.

Activity represents the component parts of behavior.

Activity tells you why, when, where and how your product or service is valuable to your customer. It also tells you how your product or service is being used at a level of detail never before possible, enabling an understanding that allows you to improve your product and service relentlessly. Therefore, it’s core to any iterative process as well. Knowledge of activity and behavior provide an unfair advantage in understanding customer’s attitude and willingness to continue being a customer. It enables maximally relevant conversations between you and your customer about what matters…whatever that might be.

An “activity stream” is the essence of Twitter and a core feature of Facebook…however, these are consumer services and have a generic, spread-spectrum focus. Twitter and Facebook mix the personal and professional, business and consumer, artistic, political, religious and everywhere in between. Furthermore, many social networking platforms are simply not viable within the enterprise today.

In any event, the concept worth exploring is an Enterprise Activity Stream and it’s implications for businesses going forward. I believe salesforce.com is onto this concept to a certain extent with its future Chatter platform but we’re in the very early days. The possibilities and implications here are pretty big…more on this soon….
