This is from a never published series taken by Mark Shaw for LIFE magazine backstage at the Pierre Balmain couture show in 1954.

Mark Shaw is best known for his extraordinary work documenting family scenes of Jacqueline and John F. Kennedy, which he shot originally for LIFE magazine and later as the Kennedys’ “unofficial” family photographer. He developed a strong friendship with JFK and Jackie and regularly visited the White House during their time there.

Shaw was afforded an unusual proximity to the models and designers of the 1950’s and 1960’s, allowing for a rare look behind the highly stylized presentation of fashion in the period. His work allows the viewer a true sense of the humanity behind what became archetypes of glamour.

Mark Shaw began working for LIFE in 1952. In his 16 years with the magazine, he shot 27 covers, more than 100 stories which included the magazine’s European fashion collections. As a leading fashion photographer, he also worked for Harper’s Bazaar, Mademoiselle and a host of other publications. He was one of the first photographers to use color when shooting the runways and “backstage” at the couture shows.

The celebrities Mark Shaw photographed for LIFE and other publications included: Pablo Picasso, Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, Danny Kaye, Cary Grant, Yves St. Laurent, Nico of the Velvet Underground and Coco Chanel.

Connue du public à titre de musicienne pour ses contributions au sein des groupes The Dears et, plus récemment, For Those About To Love, Valérie Jodoin-Keaton ajoute une corde à son arc en publiant ces jours-ci le livre Backstage. S’évertuant tout autant du côté de la photographie depuis plusieurs années (on lui doit notamment la fameuse pochette du dernier gravé de Mara Tremblay), voici que la jeune femme conjugue ses passions en nous présentant un recueil d’une cinquantaine de clichés mettant en scène un pan de la confrérie musicale tant locale qu’internationale. Présentés dans l’habitat naturel qu’est devenue pour eux la coulisse, les sujets sont donc immortalisés quelques instants avant ou après leurs performances, sans dentelles et dans un esprit de transparence qui s’offre au spectateur comme une brèche dans l’intime.

C’est donc dans les coulisses du Métropolis, où plusieurs desdites photos ont été réalisées que nous avons rencontré la jeune artiste. Pour une visite commentée de quelques « souvenirs de tournées ».

Cliché hot

En s’engouffrant au sous-sol où se trouvent les loges de la salle, nous arrivons dans une pièce centrale où bouteilles de champagne vides, quantité de bières, et autres restes de bouffes témoignent d’une veille achalandée : « c’est parfait comme ça », s’empresse de répondre la photographe à la jeune femme qui nous y entraîne et se confond en excuses pour l’état des lieux. Bien sûr, Jodoin-Keaton en a vu bien d’autres et regrette surtout d’avoir loupé le concert responsable de la veille (Peaches, pour tout vous dire). Une fois attablé et loquace sur les artistes côtoyés dans l’environnement présent, la photographe se remémore non sans enthousiasme ses rencontres avec Jack White (qui regardait les finales de la Coupe Stanley où s’y débattaient… les Red Wings de Detroit) ou encore celle, plus troublante, avec Catherine Ringer, quelques mois après le décès de Fred Chichin et qui avait accepté de se prêter à l’exercice le temps d’un seul clic…

Bref, la photographe tient à préciser que par-delà le strass de l’exercice, l’intérêt d’un projet commeBackstage tient surtout du devoir de mémoire : « J’ai toujours été attirée par le documentaire, par le côté sociologique et anthropologique du médium », nous dit la jeune artiste, aussi diplômée en histoire latino-américaine. Une fascination d’ailleurs mise de l’avant depuis ses premiers projets-photos réalisés auprès d’aveugles croqués sur le vif (Les Aveugles, 1999) ou encore cette série de clichés réalisée à la maison-mère des Sœurs Grises de Montréal (Les Sœurs Grises, 2001) qui nous plonge dans le quotidien d’une communauté recluse, voire oubliée. Un élément essentiel à la démarche de la jeune femme : « j’aime prendre le temps de me vouer à mes projets », laisse tomber celle qui aura passé quatre ans à se faufiler dans les coulisses.

Camera Obscura

Selon Roland Barthes, la photographie est une chose morte; une chose qui a été . L’instant capturé en photo est perdu pour toujours et reste fixé dans le temps. Du coup, l’image devient un code secret pour empêcher que cet instant ne quitte notre mémoire.En ce sens, en immortalisant l’instant d’avant ou d’après scène dans l’intimité de la coulisse, Valérie Jodoin-Keaton entraîne le spectateur vers l’essence même du médium : « C’est ce qui m’a permis de bien faire mon travail. Si je ne les avais pas photographiés à ce moment-là, les portraits n’auraient pas eu grand intérêt. Étant moi-même musicienne, je savais que je pouvais aller chercher dans ces moments spécifiques une émotion très particulière. C’est un moment où l’artiste est à la fois fort et vulnérable, il est concentré, fort : prêt à être montré. J’ai voulu aller à leur rencontre à ce moment précis. »

Du coup, la photographe s’imposait une discrétion, voire un effacement, lorsque près des artistes, question de ne pas déroger du rituel de coulisse propre à chacun : « C’est là que tu te retrouves seul, que tu t’isoles. Et c’est bien sûr un grand moment d’introspection », souligne celle qui dit avoir toujours été très attirée par les lieux clos. Au propre (Backstage) comme au figuré (Les Aveugles) : « C’est clairement le genre d’environnement qui m’inspire comme photographe. » Un lieu toutefois qui, dans ce cas-ci, est à la fois clos tout en étant l’espace partagé avec ses pairs : « sur le plan émotif, tu partages un lieu avec tous les artistes qui sont passés là. Il y a l’idée de la connexion entre tous les artistes, une uniformité de l’espace. Et je pense qu’on peut tous vivre un sentiment apparenté. Malgré les actions ou inactions qui y ont lieu, selon les cas. […] C’est une étude sur le rituel avant-après, sur comment vivre ce moment-là. »

Une intimité qui se veut tout autant un document d’archives pour la photographe/musicienne : « Il y a une partie de la musicienne en moi qui a voulu apporter sa contribution au monde du rock. Y contribuer par le biais de ma sensibilité visuelle. J’aimerais croire que le document aura un certain impact dans le monde du rock. Le public qui rencontre le monde de la coulisse. Et le choix des musiciens compte pour beaucoup : ce n’est pas Star Académie, ce sont des gens dont j’apprécie beaucoup le travail. La cohésion d’un à l’autre est très certainement la veine indépendante. Et le ton de l’ouvrage est tout sauf paparazzi, ce n’est pas dans la sensation. Ça devient un peu le témoignage d’une grande liberté artistique, de ce que c’est que d’être indépendant. » Des portraits, au final, qui sont profondément humains.

wie ich finde macht RAN einen richtig guten Job. Gerade für die Fans, die auch einen Blick hinter den Kulissen werfen wollen gibt es auf Ran.de nun viele Einblicke in die Vorbereitung und die Erlebnisse des TV Teams.

Andrea Kaiser und Wolff Fuss werden per Digicam bei ihrer Arbeit begleitet. Ihr könnt Andrea z.B. beim Taxi fahren zuschauen, beim frieren in Moskau oder auch wie sie dem Kameraman sagt, dass der tiefe Ausschnitt nicht so nah gezeigt werden soll. Wolff Fuss es z.B. bei der Pressekonferenz in München, vor dem Trainingsgelände oder 2 Stunden vor dem Spiel, wie er seinen Kommentatorenplatz vorstellt.

Ich persönlich finde es sehr interessant, sehr lustig und es ist einfach ein toller Einblick in die Arbeit eines TV Teams.

Schaut einfach mal rein, denn es lohnt sich wirklich
