So, quick round up of  some of todays bitties…

• Twice now I’ve seen a massive cruise ship sail up the harbour. If you are in the right spot, it goes under the bridge (looking like it won’t fit), fills all the sea / room between the bridge and the Opera House, then looks as though it’s going to crash into the Opera House. It doesn’t, sails on past…
• Had some lovely food. Although reasonably priced, the $2.55 I was getting to the pound in 2006 was more agreeable than the $1.80 I am getting now…
• There don’t seem to be many fat people here, the outdoorsy way of life helps with that
• North Sydney Olympic pool (2 mins from me by the water) is fresh water. And the people who swim there take their swimming seriously (will leave my armbands at home on Monday)
• The TV here is a mix of British and US. As the non-sporting events rarely pull in more than a million or two viewers, it’s why there is so little home grown TV
• When the sun shines, the harbour area is one of the most beautiful in the world (the hot men wearing little help)
• The way Aussies pronounce ‘Australia; is strail-yaaa (two syllables, very drawn out finish)
• The people are friendly, and will talk to you for hours
• There are loads of Brits here. If we all went home, the creative industry (for one) would most likely fold
• Sir Martin Sorrell just described this place as a backwater. Whilst he may have a point from a business perspective, you can’ t deny the work life balance is (generally) better

So, another sunset with the harbour bridge, opera house and water in my midst. This time from the north shore, looking over the skyscrapers. Just stunning, cannot believe how lucky I am for the few weeks I am here!

How to Reach:

The rail head Kollam Junction is connected to Mumbai to Kanyakumari and many other parts of the nation. Kollam is served by three national highways. It is on NH47 that links Salem to Kanyakumari via Palakkad.

As far as the 1st World goes… Australia is something of a technological backwater. This has been quite apparent to me from a very young age. I was always questioning why it was the rest of the 1st world were getting the latest video game consoles, PCs, DVD players, and mobile phones ages before us… and why it was that when we finally did get that stuff, it was so much more expensive here.

But nowhere has this situation of technological stagnation been more apparent to me than our internet access. I know for certain that the World Wide Web was around long before I’d even heard of it… it wasn’t until about 1997 that I started using the Internet, and even later before my parents could afford a PC that could take it (yeah I was still a kid back then… and note that they could afford to send me to a private school yet couldn’t afford a decent computer with decent internet access). Even then… the Internet access we had was dial-up that had a time limit, and since the server it dialled to was too far away, it really rung up our phone bills if we used it during peak hours.

In about 1998, I got to do my first year of electives, and naturally, since I thought I wanted to be a programmer in those days, I picked Computer Studies. I remember during those classes listening to my teacher talk about some of these new technologies and dreaming about them, particularly Cable and ADSL… whenever I looked around for local providers of cable or ADSL I found that it was only just becoming available and it was still a long way off being available here in the Hunter Region N.S.W.

So if I wanted to download audio or video… it would be hours of waiting before I could watch or listen to it… Starcraft and Age of Empires II would sometimes lag so bad that they became unplayable, and even schoolwork took to long to email to myself from my Yahoo account to my school email account.

Anyway, when broadband finally became available… it came with some terrible conditions… download limits. The first plan we had was about 1 gigabyte. Then eventually we managed to get a 12 gigabyte plan. I recently had to upgrade my plan to 25 gig, and… yes… one week before the end of this billing period, it got shaped and I’m now back to reliving the horrific days of dialup. Next month, of course, I’m going to be trying to ration my internet usage… which of course is ridiculous since it implies that internet is some precious resource that is scarce rather than being the great, vast global communication network that it actually is.

And all the while, my friends over on the other side of the world are enjoying shapeless internet access with twice the speed at about the same cost or even cheaper.

In the next few weeks, I’m hoping to be able to summon enough nerve to put my face in front of a camera and make some videos to upload on YouTube… but god knows how long uploading that stuff will take if my internet connection gets shaped again.

You know what makes me fucking BOIL?

YEAH. It’s when some stupid mother fucker inevitably comes along and can’t spell the word “lose”. And I’m about to let loose all over them. Maybe their brain is loose, or maybe they just lose at life; but for whatever reason, THEY CAN’T SPELL A GOD DAMNED FOUR LETTER WORD IN THEIR NATIVE LANGUAGE. AGGGGGHHHHHHHHH.

No, it’s not “loose”. “Loose” was your mother’s trailer-park vagina. “Loose” is how your seatbelt should remain as you barrell down the highway, you little punk. And no, you’re not trying to “loose” a few pounds, they’re already plenty loose and bouncing up and down upon your fat, disgusting existence.
