- See your dentist regularly – Get a check-up and cleaning at least twice a year. If you have or have had periodontal disease, your dentist will recommend more frequent visits.

- Stop smoking/chewing tobacco – Ask your dentist what they recommend to help break the habit.

- Drink water frequently – Water will help keep your mouth moist and wash away bacteria.

- Use mouthwash/rinses – Some over-the-counter products only provide a temporary solution to mask unpleasant mouth odor. Ask your dentist about antiseptic rinses that not only alleviate bad breath, but also kill the germs that cause the problem.

In most cases, your dentist can treat the cause of bad breath. If it is determined that your mouth is healthy, but bad breath is persistent, your dentist may refer you to your physician to determine the cause of the odor and an appropriate treatment plan.

Dentist and Fresh Breath Expert Debunks Dental Hygiene Tips From Manufacturers Every year, the maker

Dentist and Fresh Breath Expert Debunks Dental Hygiene Tips From Manufacturers

Every year, the makers of the leading brands of toothpaste come out with their tips for the holidays, mainly angled at promoting dental hygiene. This year, they targeted fresh holiday breath, and the nation’s foremost fresh breath expert, “Dentist to the Stars” Dr. Harold Katz is crying foul.

“Their tips made no sense at all,” he said. “I can respect them wanting to put out a holiday story that puts their brand names in the public eye, as I know they like to sell toothpaste, but they should be more responsible than to be recommending measures that can actually be harmful to your teeth.”

Instead of following the old time toothpaste manufacturers’ tips, Dr. Katz has his own Five Tips to Fresh Holiday Breath.

”I have no problem with them if they are disseminating useful, common sense tips,” he said. “It’s when they recommend to consumers actions that may actually prove harmful that makes me angry. They shouldn’t be spreading tips that may actually harm people. It’s an irresponsible way to market toothpaste.”

Some of these companies recommend rinsing with Hydrogen peroxide, which can be dangerous. Hydrogen peroxide breaks down into free hydroxyl radicals which can eventually damage oral tissue if used every day.

Other companies recommend their strong tasting mouthwash or toothpaste which can contain alcohol, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (a strong detergent to create suds), Saccharin, and artificial flavors and colors as a marketing gimmick. None of these ingredients attacks the root cause of bad breath: Anaerobic sulfur-producing bacteria that breed beneath your tongue as well as the back of the throat and tonsils.

Katz has his own tips, and they include:

Drink More Water to help replenish precious saliva. Healthy saliva contains a high concentration of oxygen, which is the natural enemy of the anaerobic bacteria that cause bad breath.

Avoid Breath Mints and Gum with Sugar. Sugar feeds the bad breath bacteria, so don’t make them any stronger than they already are. Also avoid dairy foods. The bad breath bacteria love proteins – especially those in dairy foods. (They create nasty sulfur compounds when breaking down proteins).

Use Oral Products that contain Oxygenating Compounds, the newest therapy to stop bad breath. Brands include TheraBreath and PerioTherapy. More information is available at www.freshbreath.com or www.therabreath.com.

Keep Your Tongue Clean. GENTLY brush your tongue with a soft nylon toothbrush, but don’t use traditional toothpaste on the brush, because most toothpaste contains the harsh drying agent, sodium lauryl sulfate (which is a fancy term for SOAP).

Don’t Use Mouthwash Containing Alcohol. Alcohol makes the mouth dry and there is not enough alcohol in those strong tasting mouthwash formulas to kill any bacteria. Anyway, why burn the inside of your mouth during the Holidays!

Katz also recommends that people download his free Bad Breath Bible at www.badbreathbible.com.

So I hear my name over the monitor, “Mommy, mommy, mommy.” When that happens I always dread to look at the clock and see how early I am waking up. I look at the clock and it says 5:00 am. “Well, that may be good because then he should fall back asleep and probably just needs to be tucked in or something,” I thought. So I go down to his room and he says, “I had a good sleep and I’m hungry.” Oh, boy, that isn’t good. So I lay with him hoping he’ll go back to sleep. He is pretty antsy and then says, “I mell (smell) something. Maybe it’s you maybe.” “Oh,” I said, “I don’t know.” Then he says, “Can you turn that way?” It was kind of weird having your three year old telling you you had bad breath, even if it was true. So I turned and very soon we were out on the couch watching a movie while I tried to get more sleep. The end of the morning was that we both fell asleep on the couch around 7:00 for about 20 minutes until Ben woke up.

Many of us may not realize that we have bad breath, but everyone has it from time to time, especially in the morning.

There are various reasons one may have bad breath, but in healthy people, the major reason is due to microbial deposits on the tongue, especially the back of the tongue. Some studies have shown that simply brushing the tongue reduced bad breath by as much as 70 percent.

What may cause bad breath?

    * Morning time – Saliva flow almost stops during sleep and its reduced cleansing action allows bacteria to grow, causing bad breath.
* Certain foods – Garlic, onions, etc. Foods containing odor-causing compounds enter the blood stream; they are transferred to the lungs, where they are exhaled.
* Poor oral hygiene habits – Food particles remaining in the mouth promote bacterial growth.
* Periodontal (gum) disease – Colonies of bacteria and food debris residing under inflamed gums.
* Dental cavities and improperly fitted dental appliances – May also contribute to bad breath.
* Dry mouth (Xerostomia) – May be caused by certain medications, salivary gland problems, or continuous mouth breathing.
* Tobacco products – Dry the mouth, causing bad breath.
* Dieting – Certain chemicals called ketones are released in the breath as the body burns fat.
* Dehydration, hunger, and missed meals – Drinking water and chewing food increases saliva flow and washes bacteria away.
* Certain medical conditions and illnesses – Diabetes, liver and kidney problems, chronic sinus infections, bronchitis, and pneumonia are several conditions that may contribute to bad breath.

Keeping a record of what you eat may help identify the cause of bad breath. Also, review your current medications, recent surgeries, or illnesses with you dentist.

Say whatttt?!??!

Lets see what Merriam-Webster has to say:

“Pronunciation: \ˌha-lə-ˈtō-səs\

Function: noun

Etymology: New Latin, from Latin halitus breath, from halare to breathe — more at exhale

Date: 1874

: a condition of having fetid breath”

[Source]

Uhhhhh? Let’s see what my good friend Wiki has to say about the matter at hand.

“Halitosis, or most commonly bad breath are terms used to describe noticeably unpleasant odors exhaled in breathing – whether the smell is from an oral source due to bacteria or otherwise.”

[Source] Ding ding! We have a winner!

We clearly have a problem in your hands!

Lately I have been noticing as I have been “dieting” ( I have quotes because I want to talk about that in another post) my breath has been kickin’. I would not have an issue with this unless someone else mentioned it. And they did.

The thing is I brush my teeth on the regular. I have never left my house with un-brushed teeth. Its like being naked. Gross.

So why the issue?

Basically when we diet or lower the intake of food, our smart/ starving bodies burn fat by a process called Ketosis.

Ketones- any orgo people out there?

This process also occurs when you lower the amount of carbohydrates you eat. So our bodies burn fat to get the needed energy. Now here is the stinky party, our bodies can burn all types of fat but acetone ( yes I know the structure of this). So, acetone is secreted through our bodies as waste in the from of urine and in our breath.

The cure?

Stick with your normal brushing 2x a day, flossing and mouthwash routine.

I have started brushing my tongue as well but I keep gagging as I do this. Its not very fun.

I also drink plenty of water all day to keep my mouth hydrated.

Now I would never ask anyone if they have had this problem, but do you have a friend or a friend who may have dealt with an issue similar to mine?

If so, what other solutions have they discovered for this rather stinky problem?

Reduced saliva flow that results in a dry mouth is a common problem among older adults. It is caused

Reduced saliva flow that results in a dry mouth is a common problem among older adults. It is caused by certain medical disorders and is often a side effect of medications such as antihistamines, decongestants, pain killers and diuretics.

Some of the common problems associated with dry mouth include a constant sore throat, burning sensation, problems speaking, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness or dry nasal passages. Left untreated, dry mouth can damage your teeth. Without adequate saliva to lubricate your mouth, wash away food, and neutralize the acids produced by plaque, extensive decay can occur.

Your dentist can recommend various methods to restore moisture. Sugar-free candy or gum stimulates saliva flow, and moisture can be replaced by using artificial saliva and oral rinses such as Biotene.

Dry mouth is a potential side effect of numerous medications (prescribed and over-the-counter). Among them are antihistamines, decongestants, painkillers, high blood pressure medications, muscle relaxants, drugs for urinary incontinence, Parkinson’s disease medications, antidepressants and many others. Drying irritates the soft tissues in the mouth, which can make them inflamed and more susceptible to infection.
Without the cleansing effects of saliva, tooth decay and other oral health problems become more common. Patients using oral inhalers for asthma often develop oral candidiasis, an oral fungal infection, and are encouraged to rinse their mouths with water after using the inhaler.

When you see cases of chronic bad breath in some people, there may be evidences of plaques that usually build up between the gums and teeth. If these plaques are filled with food particles, bacteria will build up and cause foul smell to ooze out of the mouth. You must ensure that plaques are treated with the best medical attention so that bad breath will not be a problem to you.
There are some medications, which may lead to bad breath. Inhalers used by asthmatic patients are typical examples. This medication causes the mouth to dry and reduce the quantity of saliva produced. Bacteria usually grow and breed where there is less oxygen and a dry mouth is one of such places. Thus, bad breath will be experienced if inhalers are frequently used.
What kind of mouthwash do you use? If the kind you use has composition of alcohol, definitely you are going to have bad breath. To avoid bad breath of this nature, you need to do away with alcoholic mouthwash.
Peppermint oil can be drop in the tongue as a way to cure bad breath. However, peppermint leaves are equally good to serve the same purpose when chewed. These leaves will cure your bad breath as well as help in the reduction of your stomach acid.
Watch what you eat if you need to get rid of bad breath. If you eat foods that are not properly cooked or cleaned, you could be experiencing bad breathe especially if such food has a high concentration of acids. Thus, watch what you take in as food and ensure that you will get properly digestion from them.
Bad Breath
Bad Breath

Mistletoe season has arrived, so it’s absolutely crucial that your pout is smooch-worthy. Your lips are buffed, glossed, and puckered, but what about your breath? One in four people have bad breath, according to Colgate (and they should know, they make toothpaste). It’s caused by many various factors, from the foods we eat, to the drinks we consume, to our daily hygiene and general health. It happens to the best of us, but there is no reason to not take action. Dirty mouth? Let’s clean it up.

John Frieda Shares His Two Most Important Ways to Get Perfect Hair!

Chew the right thing

Okay, the obvious choice when you are less-than-kissable is to brush your teeth and tongue. (Yes, your tongue! It gets rid of odor-causing bacteria.) Mouthwash and sugar-free gum are another quick fix. Or, if you’re feeling organic, chew a couple fresh mint leaves.

Is Your Morning Coffee Making You Fat?

Stay hydrated

Classroom breath, office breath, church breath: whatever you call it, we’ve all experienced that weird, stale breath that comes from not opening your mouth for a while. It’s actually caused by dehydration, so be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Peppermint tea spiked with anise or cinnamon is also recommended.

Gargle with hydrogen peroxide (yes, seriously)

We know this sounds awful, but gargling 50 percent hydrogen peroxide with 50 percent H20 for 5-30 seconds is an immediate and lasting cure for microbial bad breath. Also, almost every household is guaranteed to have a bottle. If not, every drugstore will, and the plus side to its medicinal taste is that it’s super cheap–$1 for an 8-ounce bottle! (That’s cheaper than gum these days!)

These tips will seriously do the trick. When implemented into your daily routine, they may even lessen that morning breath of yours!

FERNDALE, MI – Police in a Detroit suburb are looking for a bank robber who has horrible breath!

Ferndale police are looking for a man who has robbed from the same Charter One bank twice, once in October and once last week.

Both tellers said the man is black, tall and thin, and wore a black hooded type of jacket each time. But what they remember most is the robber “having very offensive breath and real yellow teeth.”

Lieutenant William Wilson said, “The whites of his eyes are yellow. He looks and smells dirty.”

He has since been dubbed the “Bad Breath Bandit”!

Authorities stated he showed the bank tellers a note demanding money, but never showed a weapon.

It is believed he stole at least $1,000 during his last robbery.

I went to The Roxy the other night to meet up with some friends of mine from Edmonton named Dan and

I went to The Roxy the other night to meet up with some friends of mine from Edmonton named Dan and Sharlene. The night was an event in celebration of the amassed accountants – Sharlene included – finishing their schooling or some other such milestone and was actually pretty great. I got rather drunk and danced quite a lot to a cover band, the lead singer of which rather rudely denied mine and Sharlene’s request to have a go with the band’s maracas, but I’m not one to hold a grudge. Either way that’s not really the point of this post.

When I first arrived at the bar there was a rather awful smell that I thought initially was Dan’s breath. Being ever the master of social graces I pulled out a tin of mints, first helping myself and then, as if just observing politeness rules, proffered said mints to the gathered friends at which point – SUCCESS!! – Dan rather gladly took a mint leading me to believe that he was perhaps aware that his breath was a little on the stale side and was happy to have someone around – and some might call this person a hero – with breath mints to save the day.

So problem solved I delve into drinking with a gusto others reserve for running a marathon or swimming the English Channel – let it never be said that I’m not a committed and supportive friend, we were there to fete Sharlene after all. But now I notice that not only is the smell still lingering, but that it’s everywhere. The offensive stench is all around me and actually making me a little nauseous. IT WAS REVOLTING!

I soon deduced that it was the bar itself – having, for some reason, carpeted floors likely to be holding years of beers spills and vomit – attacking my nasal passage. I have honestly never been to a bar that smelled so bad, and I was around for the great Edmonton smoking ban. Remember that? Overnight every bar in Edmonton stank, no longer being able to rely on the nicotine fug to hide years of questionable cleanliness standards. I remember the first night we went to O’Byrne’s after the smoking ban and it reeked of vomit all night. Like that really putrid acidic smell. It was awful. But I digress.

Upon consulting with some work colleagues I was told that this odour is just normal for The Roxy. Gross. It was actually so bad that I could smell it on me all night and the next day, and yes I showered. You know when a smell just gets lodged up your nose. Ugh, I hate that.

Conclusion. Dan: does not have bad breath; Sharlene: passed her classes; The Roxy: fun if you can get past the smell.

This entry and certain photos contained within are potentially offensive

& inappropriate for minors and/or the workplace.

For the last two plus months my pseudo sister-in-law Rose has been staying in my son’s basement bedroom (the size of a small apartment with queen-sized bed, wall-sized flat screen & laptop with wireless internet). Although in the past decade she once lived in a motel paid for by the State of NJ, next door to the schizophrenic owner of a dog that bit her, she still managed to complain incessantly about a musty odor that my ridiculously sensitive nose cannot smell.

She is my son’s aunt, his deceased father’s oldest sister, the craziest chick I’ve ever known. She has no connection to my current husband or daughter (other than driving them nuts & assisting them in creating an unbreakable bond of misery that instigates great eye rolling & whispered complaints). I have known her for 25 years & love her like the sister you think might have been secretly adopted.

After she had COMPLETELY demolished the room with such an incredible amount of pure crap that it seemed to have exploded from a magician’s trunk (she has a touch of the hoarder) we sent a cell phone picture of his room to Bobby in California. From 3,000 miles he seemed almost excited, so thorougly entertained he was by the chaos & unease I’d brought into our little world.

How do I possibly describe her? A heart the size of Montana and a mouth larger than Alaska. I am so completely entertained & tortured by both. Following her around, I stay two steps back to (1) jump up & down with glee at her unbelievable antics, talking to total strangers & saying outrageous shit and (2) cover my face & pretend I don’t know her as I groan out loud, twisting with a reflective shame that can’t handle it at all.

As the oldest of 8 children, mommy’s helper from the age of two, she is a worker bee, she makes things happen. She is a f*cking force of nature. However, supposedly her heart was broken when I used those words to describe her after 48 hours in our house. This from a woman who once walked in and yelled, “Pam, you’re pregnant! I had no idea!” as a comedic way of mocking my recent weight gain.

She talks . . . A LOT. Sometimes it’s more entertaining than others.

* * * * *

I moved to North Carolina at her urging in 1985, made a cross country move with a 3 month old and her sick brother. It was monumentally stupid. We were there a week when she realized there was no way she could fulfill the promises of help made to entice our nightmare into hell. It didn’t seem to really phase her as she told me, “Yeah, well.”

Along those same lines were a few other episodes in our bizarre decades long connection. She once cut my toddler son’s hair while I was at work, did not call and ask if it was okay, thought it was ridiculous when I lost my mind. (I can’t really explain why this is equal to felony assault, but IT IS.)

She invited her grandmother to NC, my son’s great-grandmother & someone I’d never met, then became annoyed with the woman & left her at my house for 3 days without even a phone call. At that point her brother was already deceased & I was on shaky ground. It didn’t sit well when I called to my toddler and asked, “Do you want a slice of cheese?” & got the reply “Sure!” from a shaky 80-year old. It was not a good time for extra care duties.

After 72 hours Rose came by to take advantage of our community pool. When I got angry she locked herself in her car & wouldn’t discuss the situation. In a burst of maturity I kicked her car & screamed like a maniac. She has seen me at my worst and accepts me as I am, something I can’t say about many people on planet earth. She really, really knows me, far better than my own family. It’s not always an impressive sight to behold.

Her life has always been chaotic, beginning with a 25-year marriage to an alcoholic, but recently she’s been living with a 71-year old Italian who fancies himself Tommy Soprano. She left twice, he begged her to come back, it’s a rollercoaster. When they hit bottom again at the end of September she told me a few specifics. We hadn’t really spoken in months, yet my reply was, “We’re coming to get you.”

For more than 2 years I’d controlled my impulse to say or do such a thing. His mocking her appearance was the last straw. He’d done worse & I’m not sure what instigated those unthinkable words escaping my mouth. (It happened once before, more than 10 years ago, when I invited the school librarian and her two daughters into our home for a month. We later found out she’d stayed in someone else’s home for over a YEAR.)

I should mention Rose has FOUR SISTERS, none of whom have stepped up, who from my perspective have let her down beyond belief.

Did I mention she can be a little difficult?

(Or that they’re heartless bitches?)

In the mean time, while nearly homeless, she’s still spending money on food & cigarette deliveries to her parents, giving her mother money for unpaid bills when she calls crying. At least she was until her father chased her out of their senior residence with a skillet because she wasn’t willing to give him the cigarettes he saw in her purse.

This insanity is what my son’s father described as utter nirvana, a family equal only to royalty. I believed him.

* * * * *

Surprisingly, after a rough start, I really liked having her here. My daughter & her father did not. He went along with it, actually went with me to move her things, due to the domestic violence element &/or because he can’t bear confrontation or disagreement with me. Rachel chose to stay in the car, not carrying a single bag of crap down the three flights of stairs.

That first night, sitting in our den, this child of mine asked, “How do you spell ‘psycho?’”

Rose asked her, “Do you think I don’t know you’re talking about me?” Rachel blushed & snickered. It didn’t get better. The following day Rose grabbed her in a hug and whispered, “I’ll kill you, ya little bastard!”, then released her with a laugh & said, “You know I’m just joking!” Rachel took a baseball bat to bed that night, ever the drama queen, although I can’t say I wouldn’t have done the same.

Obviously we would have stepped in if we didn’t think the girl totally deserved it. She was unwilling to be civil, the expressions on her face mind boggling in their vehemence toward a 59-year old guest. Time and time again she tried to convince me that Rose was smoking in the house as a way to get rid of her, evidently unaware that I have dog senses when it comes to nicotine. I did wake up one morning in my upstairs bedroom to the smell of incense from two floors below.

To her credit, Rose reacted instantly to any request she make a change, including the incense, flowery perfume & speakerphone conversations below the bedroom door at 3 AM. She completely avoided the TV room. (It was the only way she could keep herself from chattering throughout entire episodes of favorite shows & unheard movies, a relatively unforgivable sin to every single member of this household.) We overlooked the cooking smells in the middle of the night and a crazed drunken message left on the counter, something she didn’t even remember writing.

She’s suffering from shoulder injuries (two years now), takes a good deal of pain medication(s), drinks more booze than she probably should considering that fact. Add in the Sudafed she took multiple doses of daily due to the basement allergy, which made her hyper as hell. No doubt she’s got Attention Deficit Disorder to begin with, as bad as any out of control grammar school boy.

* * * * *

She was the perfect accompaniment to the gay bar, minus a few nerve-wracking situations.

Once I went to the car and got this text: “In bathroom, fight with tranny.” I don’t know anyone else who would ever send me just such combination of words. She met people, got phone numbers & used them! After telling us about going to this same place previously with her sister

and pushing her into the pool with both cell phone & flip-flops,

which then got stuck in the filter and had to be retrieved by an employee, we carefully avoided standing near the water. Now remember, we’re talking about women in their 50’s, late 40’s max at the time. Both are really attractive, you would not guess their ages accurately, even minus the behavior factor. This is me on the left, you’ll have to guess which of the other two is Rose and which is really a man. Seriously, would you guess anyone in this picture is 59?

The first night she came along we immediately lost her. Eventually I realized she was the woman on stage doing a spectacularly nasty humping move with a cute young man. Since then not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES I have watched her dance with such enthusiasm & creativity that she accidentally ended up on the filthy floor.

BOOM!

On Halloween I headed for the stage once again to see the costume contest. There stood Rose with a husky man, his arm wrapped around her tightly, blonde hair cascading down his broad sweaty shoulders. He was wearing gloves & a cute skirt with tights.

We’ve since learned John’s preferred name is Tiffany, that he has Asperger’s & believes he lived previous lifetimes as (1) a German SS officer and (2) an extra-terrestrial on a planet where people morphed from bears instead of monkeys. He was thrilled I’d done a past life regression myself once. He desperately wants to make me over. I’m not glam enough for his taste. Yeah, no shit.

During our last conversation at the bar he used a vice grip to hold my attention. His spiked wrist band was causing me discomfort, as was the fine mist of saliva he sprayed me with more than once. His breath was horrendous. When I mentioned it to Rose in the car she said, “Oh God, I told him he smelled like a gremlin as soon as I walked in the door! Why didn’t you say something?!”

This is why I love her no matter what.

Can you believe it? He later told Rose he thinks I have Asperger’s, too, because of my ability to concentrate on his words so completely.

It’s not fucking Asperger’s, it’s called growing up in the midwest. It’s having ridiculous manners, non-existent boundaries, and the concern that people like me to such a ridiculous extent that I don’t even want to offend some crazy dude in a dress. (As I write this I want to puke.)

* * * * *

But that’s not even my favorite story. She met another dude who took a liking to her, one who dresses like a man. He’d rented a room in the attached hotel so he could avoid driving home drunk. Evidently ATTORNEYS are very careful about DWI’s. She had no interest in him as a date, but he was perfectly acceptable as long as he kept buying her drinks. When I found them she already knew his life story.

He was quite inebriated & got thrown off the dance floor for unzipping and allowing the ventriloquist’s dummy in his pants to take a peek around. As the bouncer escorted him out of the room, Rose’s new pal yelled out his room number & requested after hours party-goers.

She felt bad he’d been forced upstairs before closing time (by just 5 minutes) & immediately began assembling a ragtag group of young people to accompany her to his room. (Her fantastic sales skills are transferable to any occasion.) I was laughing so hard I was crying. Next I knew, I was standing in an elevator & Rose was nowhere to be seen. I was surrounded by what could only be described as a group meant for casting in the next John Waters film (if he hadn’t died recently): men who look like women, women who look like men, varied colors of the rainbow & me (prior pale PTO secretary).

I felt a moment of panic as I reconsidered my decision-making abilities & thought about what the fuck I was doing.

These things don’t happen when I go places with Roxanne.

When the doors to the elevator opened Rose had already arrived via the stairs. She began rapping on the door as the diverse crew stood around, excited to see what was behind curtain #1. They had no idea what prize awaited. When a 300-plus pound man opened the door naked & excited there was a screaming chorus of

“OH MY GOD!” and “OH FUCK NO!”

and an avalanche of 20-somethings running for the exit signs.

Rose couldn’t believe they were so disappointingly appearance-oriented, yet she would no more go out with this guy than she would date a woman. She probably would have been willing to enter the room if I had even given a HINT I might spend time in that potentially bedbug-infested cave with a man carrying a minimum of 30 pounds of impacted feces in his colon.

It wasn’t happening.

* * * * *

I know you’ll be surprised to hear this, but she did a few things that left us nervous about leaving her in the house alone for long periods. She lit candles & left them burning, forgot to lock doors. So when a trip to Florida was planned back in October it was with the presumption Rose would be gone. Otherwise, it was agreed that I would stay home. I am not a huge fan of heat, pavement, traffic, or sheets previously used by multiple patrons, so it wasn’t like I was denying myself some fantabulous pleasure-filled treat.

I didn’t care for her story about paying for car repairs with Vicodin (the whole police thing). So when I woke up Wednesday & the car dude was in our driveway using spray paint I was not happy. She went to her son’s for Thanksgiving weekend and upon return mentioned the boyfriend had called. It didn’t seem like a big deal until she left the house Tuesday on a date & never came back, for practical purposes disappearing from our lives in a matter of 12 hours. I did call to make sure she was alive.

Just the day before my husband had actually had his first real conversation with her & advised he believed it was a serious situation worthy of a restraining order. When she almost immediately chose to do the opposite it really pissed him off, not an easy thing to do. More than once I suggested she come back & simply date the guy until receiving reassurance that things were really better. She would hear nothing of the sort, not surprising since when she’s with him her personality undergoes a radical change that’s all about meeting his extensive needs.

She’d actually been surprised at how much she came to enjoy living in our house, the most low-key environment she’d ever experienced, my husband different than any other man she’s ever known. No anger, no raised voices, no insistence that things be done a certain way in a specific time-frame.

But Rachel’s advice? “I think we should tell her to follow her heart! CACKLE-CACKLE-CACKLE!”

* * * * *

The trip was set for Friday. Rose’s STUFF (3,000 small items and a busted up car bumper) is still in our house. She also still has a key, thank God, or I would have had to get in the car and head south. Instead, the girl and her father are staying in a 2-bedroom suite with 3 TV’s, 2 bathrooms and a kitchen, while I am home alone in New Jersey.

I am incredulous over what it feels like to be completely alone, loving it beyond my possible imagination. Now I remember why people like living alone, choose to have no children and no spouse. The rabbit in a hutch outside is a little more commitment than I’d choose at this moment.

It seems that even though I knew my daughter’s attitude and presence had an effect on me, I was unaware of the extent to which it changes everything. As a pre-teen she does not like going anywhere, does not want to do anything I want to do, and is quite verbal with her complaints. It’s like having an anchor around my neck. I love her dearly but the experience of being on my own is so freeing.

My husband is another story. When we are apart he tends to get a whiny tone to his voice that indicates he doesn’t like being alone. Fuck me. He has been instructed on how to deal with me but refuses to listen. “Ignore me, don’t call me. Be mean.” He can’t do it. This will be his downfall, the refusal to take my advice.

On the other hand, he is the dreamiest father you could imagine. She will have a better time alone with him than if I were there. He is more outgoing, comes up with his own ideas to have fun & even sings in the car in my absence.

WTF?

They had not yet been there 4 hours when he asked about finding a cheap ticket and flying me down for the week (they drove). Meanwhile, I’d already been to a book sale, had lunch with Roxanne & watched “Slumdog Millionaire” until 5 AM. What do you think my answer was to the idea of getting on a plane during a winter storm & leaving behind this opportunity to breathe on my own?

You all know me so well.

3 Tips for Beating Bad Breath: Take the Hint, You Need a Mint – AMERICA - Do you know somebody who is suffering from chronic halitosis but they just don’t seem to know their breath stinks like death? Does the overweight guy next to your cubicle at work eat fromunda cheese and onion sandwiches for lunch every day of the week without brushing his teeth? If so, haven’t you wanted to run over and scream “Geezus, Marty and Josephine pal, have you smelled your breath lately?” right in their fat faces? Probably not because you’re too nice, but now’s the time for action. Wether you have the testicular fortitude for the job, here’s 3 simple ways to tell death breath to brush up on their hygiene, literally, or just buy them some damn mints.

1. Eat the right foods. If you’re going to run around the bar trying to get easy chicks to kiss you it might be a good idea to lay off the double bean burritos with the refried beans and onion chaser amigo. Strike one and two, but your out anyway.

2. Drink lots. Lots of water that is, not a case of beer, 8 shots of Jaeger, and 4 car bombs with a garlic garnish, before passing out and waking up with puke breath, before the party even starts.

3. Don’t gargle with bong water. You smell like weed, your room smells like weed, and your breath smells like weed. Buy some breath spray, today Cheech. (http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/health/do-you-have-bad-breath-3-instant-cures-548551/)

Christmas break is right around the corner, at least for college kids, so it’s absolutely crucial that your breath doesn’t peel paint on ten-cent draft nights down at the local watering trough. One in four people have bad breath, and you’re one of them, so stop eating disgusting food, stop drinking cheap beer that tastes like piss, and brush your goddamn teeth once in a while. Bad breath is a losing battle for lots of guys who don’t get laid, but there is no reason to not take action. Dirty mouth that always smells like rotting flesh? Take a hint, eat a mint, and your halitosis will go away.

Of all the idiotic, trivial things that can ruin a person’s life, bad breath has to rank high on any

Of all the idiotic, trivial things that can ruin a person’s life, bad breath has to rank high on anyone’s list of the humiliating tricks fate can play on us. A magazine in Japan sounds the alarm: our collective breath, already bad, is getting worse.

Blame stress. High standards and feverish competition make Japan a stressful place at the best of times, which these recessionary times are not. Assuming the diagnosis of recession halitosis holds, our breath should sweeten as the economy recovers—if the economy recovers.

The article opens with a personal anecdote concerning a certain “Mr. A,” a 31-year-old advertising company employee who, always careful about brushing and flossing, was all the more chagrined to note unmistakable signs of repugnance on the face of a female colleague he was chatting up.

How strange. Why should his breath be foul? His health was good, his stomach apparently fine. True, he was in a state of some anxiety over his precarious finances. Also, lately his mouth often felt strangely dry. Could that be significant?

It is indeed, says Ichiro Saito, a dentistry professor at Tsurumi University and author of a book on “dry mouth” syndrome. The number of patients he’s seeing who suffer from it has increased dramatically over the past five years. Based on his own practice and other research, he estimates 30 million Japanese may be afflicted with it.

The usual causes, stress aside, are aging and medicinal side effects. But Saito was noticing a sharp rise in the number of young sufferers, many of them under stress, though not necessarily economy-related. One of his patients, a company man in his 30s, was being persistently harassed by an older subordinate resentful of his relatively lowly status. Another patient, a “desk worker” in his 20s, found his mouth drying as a romantic relationship turned sour.

Why should stress cause bad breath? As a rule, Saito describes in the article, a person secretes 1.5 liters of saliva a day. Salivation is controlled by the autonomic nervous system. Have a relaxing massage and notice the flow increase. Quarrel with your boss and your mouth dries. If you think of saliva as a kind of natural mouthwash, the rest of the explanation is easily inferred—dry equals unclean.

There are those who would say that if bad breath is your biggest worry, your life is on a pretty even keel. But it’s not necessarily so. Surveys consistently show that women are acutely sensitive to a man’s mouth odors. One 20-year-old woman the magazine speaks to sums it up clearly and bluntly: “I don’t care how good-looking a guy is, if his mouth smells like poison gas, I won’t kiss him!”

So chew gum, men, and carry a water bottle with you for emergency sips (not gulps) when you get that dry-mouth feeling. And chew your food thoroughly. That’s something we’re apt to neglect in hurried, stressful times. In doing so, we don’t make our stress any easier to bear.

And perhaps, most important of all, practice meticulous oral hygiene and visit your dentist on a very regular basis!

Many people suffer from bad breath and some don’t know it! You may not be aware that some medications, that you could have been taking for years, actually contributes to bad breath and a bad taste in your mouth.

Simple, Easy-To-Use, System That Will Annihilate Bad Breath In 3 Days & Give You A Sparkling White Smile & Strong Healthy Teeth For The Rest Of Your Life!

One of those medications Norvasc bad breath is an antihypertensive medication, or a medication used to treat high blood pressure and angina. According to a recent study on prescription medications, 7 out of 10 will list dry mouth, bad breath or taste disorder as a side effect.

Sufferers from high blood pressure and angina find that Norvasc bad breath is a side effect they may be willing to live with considering that this particular antihypertensive is one of the most popular prescribed. This popularity is based on the low side effect profile and the number of studies which have proven it’s effectiveness. Problems with Norvasc bad breath are related to the dry mouth that is the side effect of the medication. Before considering changing medications try some effective measures to get rid of the dry mouth, and therefore the bad breath.

Another medication that is considered a risk for bad breath is Zantac. Interestingly others believe that you may be able to cure bad breath with Zantac. The theory behind this belief is that Zantac is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD is a condition where the lower esophageal sphincter does not close properly and stomach acid and contents are able to leak back into the esophagus. When the stomach acid reaches the esophagus it causes a burning sensation in the chest or throat that people experience as heartburn. The fluid can even reach the back of the tongue.

One of the treatments for GERD is Zantac. The theory behind cure bad breath with Zantac is that the Zantac will stop the symptoms of GERD. The GERD creates an environment in the mouth that causes bad breath. Take away the GERD and you’ll take away the bad breath.

Unfortunately, although curing bad breath with Zantac may work for the bad breath caused by GERD it doesn’t work for the bad breath caused by dry mouth, a side effect of Zantac. In both instances, Norvasc bad breath and curing bad breath with Zantac, the sufferer may find that simple measures to get rid of the dry mouth will help the bad breath.

Some simple techniques to keeping your mouth moist, that will decrease the bacterial growth that requires a dry area and causes bad breath, are to:

Suck on a cherry or olive pit – keeps the saliva flowing

Chew sugarless gum

During meals eat foods that require you to chew

Drink water frequently

Use a humidifier in your bedroom

Don’t smoke

Decrease, or eliminate, use of alcohol and caffeine

Avoid commercial mouthwashes that use alcohol, which dries the mouth

Norvasc bad breath and cure bad breath with Zantac are both medications that have the unpleasant side effect of dry mouth, which can lead to bad breath. Although the bad breath can be unpleasant and difficult to deal with, the medication may be so effective in treating other symptoms (such as high blood pressure or GERD) that you are willing to put up with this side effect.

The primary aim of personal dental care is to prevent cavities from forming in the teeth. In order for you to prevent cavities and maintain a healthy set of teeth, you need to remove plaque, a transparent layer of bacteria that stays on the surface of your teeth.

Some effective ways to prevent plaque from forming is to brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day. Brushing your teeth will help stimulate your gums and in turn keep them healthy and less susceptible to gum diseases.

Choose The Right Toothpaste. Toothpastes are typically made of detergents, abrasives and foaming agents. The most common active ingredient in toothpaste is fluoride. Fluoride is the component of the toothpaste that is responsible for preventing cavities from forming.

When choosing what toothpaste to buy, make sure that it has a great amount of fluoride to keep your mouth cavity-free. Studies say that 1 out of 10 people has a tendency to accumulate tartar rapidly. What is tartar? It is actually plaque that is difficult to remove and damaging because it is already in hardened form.

There are anti-tartar toothpastes and mouthwashes available in the market today which can help prevent tartar formation. Another great tip for preventing the formation of tartar is brushing the teeth located near the salivary glands.

For individuals that seem to have teeth which are sensitive to pressure, cold and heat, there are toothpastes specially made for sensitive teeth.

However, a visit to the dentist may be most appropriate so that the dentist can assess whether the sensitivity of the teeth may lead to a serious problem such as nerve inflammation or severe cavity.

Learn How To Floss. Although brushing is considered to be the most important part in the personal dental care routine, it doesn’t actually have the ability to remove the plaque and food particles between the teeth, under the gum line or within braces.

A dental floss is the weapon to get rid of the abovementioned teeth and mouth “pests”. Flossing can be done at least once a day.

There are actually different kinds of flosses and these depend on the space that a person has in between his or her teeth. Most dentists would usually suggest unwaxed floss because it is easier to glide through narrow spaces.

However, recent studies have discovered that there is actually no significant difference in the effectiveness among the different kinds of dental flosses. When flossing your teeth, you should be very careful so that you can avoid injuring your gums.

Remember, gums are very sensitive and they can bleed easily. Never force the floss under the gums; just curve the floss around the edge of your tooth and form a letter “c” then glide the floss up and down the side of each tooth. Do not forget to floss the back sides of your teeth as well.

All in all, maintaining your very own personal dental care routine can be easy, as long as you have enough willingness and determination to achieve a great set of pearly whites.

If you are one of the many people who don’t really give much attention to your teeth, don’t wait until you experience awful dental-related problems such as toothache, bad breath(halitosis) or bleeding gums.

When you get your photo taken, you usually smile and reveal to the world your teeth. Healthy teeth c

When you get your photo taken, you usually smile and reveal to the world your teeth. Healthy teeth can be a indicator of one’s personality. Slobs usually have teeth that are rotten and they have bad breath.

However, people who keep their teeth in tiptop shape are the ones who are known to be successful and responsible in their careers. Personal dental care differs from one person to another, but it all comes down to one important fact: the healthier your teeth are, the greater you would look.

Aside from the aesthetic value of healthy, good-looking teeth, they also help a person chew foods properly. Remember, for a person to have a good digestion, the foods that he or she would eat should be chewed properly. Having a good set of teeth also enables a person to speak clearly and confidently.

People who have a poor set of teeth are usually shy and hesitant to talk in public and fail to effectively communicate with others. Although sometimes, the shape and structure of one’s teeth may be genetic, dentists and orthodontists can usually help re-shape and improve crooked, ugly teeth.

The Importance Of Healthy Teeth. It is very important that individuals take care of their teeth because it will prevent plaque formation which pertains to a clear film that sticks to the surface of the teeth.

You might think that having a clear film stuck to your teeth is harmful (since it’s clear, anyway) but you might change your mind when you discover that the film is very sticky and it has a magnet-like aura that attracts bacteria to stick to it.

Sinfully Sugary Sweet. Bacteria are attracted to sugar stuck on your teeth like ants in a picnic. The bacteria that is attracted by the sugary substance left in your mouth after you eat candies or cake breaks down the sugar into acid.

The acid is the one responsible for eating away your tooth enamel, which would then cause holes in your teeth called cavities. Too much plaque also causes a disease called gingivitis. It is a gum disease that makes gums red, sore and swollen.

The first indicator that you have gingivitis is when your gums easily bleed even with just simple and basic brushing. Practicing personal dental care is really important because if one wouldn’t take care of his or her teeth, the cavities and unhealthy gums will make the gum very sore and rotten.

Getting awful toothaches can also be a result of lack of personal dental care. Having toothaches and other mouth-related diseases due to lack of personal mouth hygiene will surely make eating, as well as communicating with other people difficult.

Brush Properly. If you are already getting paranoid about all the bacteria that is staying inside your mouth, don’t be! You can actually combat the bacteria in your mouth by two simple weapons: toothbrush and toothpaste.

By brushing your teeth at least two times a day, you can break down the plaque and prevent it from building up to cause cavities and other teeth and mouth problems.

Being a responsible owner of pearly whites is not difficult. You just have to make sure that you don’t forget about your personal dental care amidst your busy work or lifestyle.

Even if you brush and floss every day, you may not completely remove plaque, especially around the gum line. This can create toxins which irritate the gums and bone and the bacteria can cause periodontal disease.

If you notice any of the following signs, see your dentist immediately:

*Gums that bleed easily. Red, swollen or tender gums.
*Gums that have pulled away from the teeth.
*Pus between the teeth and gums when the gums are pressed.
*Persistent bad breath or bad taste.
*Permanent teeth that are loose or separating.
*Any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite.
*Any changes in the fit of partial dentures.

Godzilla: 60% mega monster destruction and 40% bittersweet romance between two of the mains. It has the tried and tested 90’s mix of epic action and silly fun that you don’t often find these days. The one thing that struck me when re-watching this was that it has a lot of memorable scenes; Godzilla’s entrance at the pier, streets ‘jumping’ with his footsteps, ‘zilla on the Brooklyn Bridge, ‘zilla taking out the choppers – too many to name! The opening scene with a-bomb test footage and epic orchestrated score is pretty chilling. There’s a load of cheeky reptile references throughout which is a nice touch, and the stereotypical sneaky French guys (fronted by Reno) are good fun to watch. There’s also a lot of subtle product placement, the likes of which hadn’t been done again until I-Robot: although not quite as subtly! unfortunately, the beast hasn’t aged too well, with a shed-load of dated cultural references and naff CGI / mini-models. Despite this, it’s still a classic, and great fun to watch. Entertaining big buck blockbuster.

Score: 6/10

We are all thoughtful of the quality of our breath and patients have expressed all kinds of concerns

We are all thoughtful of the quality of our breath and patients have expressed all kinds of concerns to me: “I am afraid to speak.’ ‘Co-workers shy away from me when I talk to them.’ ‘Why is it that my child’s breath smells?’ Often times we ourselves cannot truly tell how our own mouths smell, and I find that personal paranoia is usually greater than an existing condition. So I tell my patients to ask someone close to them. perhaps a spouse, a parent, a sibling, whether or not a case of bad breath exists. If it is then confirmed that halitosis exists, we have an issue. So let’s explore the underlying conditions that may cause this phenomenon.

Poor oral hygiene would be culprit number one. Improper brushing or flossing that leaves food on or in between the teeth will cause odor. As we chew, digestion begins and food particles breakdown in our mouths. If they are not properly removed with either subsequent brushing/flossing and rinsing they will accumulate on your teeth as plaque, collect bacteria, and release Hydrogen Sulfide vapors, or bad breath.

Bleeding gums or lose shifting teeth are a sign of gingivitis or periodontal disease which will also cause halitosis. Don’t forget to clean your tongue, especially the posterior 1/3, every time you brush. Most bad smells come from the back of your tongue. Take a soft bristle brush and scrub your tongue well twice a day to clean off accumulated dead epithelium. Even if it gags you, scrub well.

Poor fitting dental work like open crown margins, leaky root canals, decaying old fillings, or poorly cleaned dentures all cause bacteria to grow which emits a bad odor. If you have had any teeth extracted and are now developing a pain radiating through your jaw coupled with a bad smell, you may have an alveolar osteitis or dry socket. This is a painful condition when a blood clot is lost prematurely. You need to visit your dentist ASAP for treatment because this condition will not resolve on its own.

Dry mouth can also cause bad breath. This condition is caused by either poorly functioning salivary glands or may be a side effect from certain medications. Saliva washes out dead epithelial cells and bacteria which are usually swallowed. However, people afflicted with dry mouth have low saliva production and so these dead cells accumulate on the teeth, tongue, and tissue, and like in morning mouth, cause odor. Chewing sugar-free gum, parsley, mints, and mouth rinses are good ways to temporarily combat this. Also it is imperative that your dentist make you fluoride trays which will strengthen your tooth enamel and slow down root surface decay.

If your dentist has reviewed all of the above conditions with you and they are within normal limits yet you still maintain chronic bad breath, then a visit to your internist is warranted. Allergies or chronic sinusitis can cause a postnasal drip into the back of your throat resulting in an odor. Blood work should be taken and evaluated to rule out certain systemic diseases as well. Metabolic disorders of the kidneys can cause urine-like breath. Problems with the pancrease like noncontrolled diabetes can create a fruity-like odor. The lungs need to be evaluated to rule out infection as does your gastrointestinal tract for disorders like gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD.

Certain diets particularly those high in protein can cause ketosis which makes your breath small acidic.

Most cases of bad breath can be treated with proper oral hygiene techniques, i.e. brushing twice a day, flossing at least once, rinsing your mouth with appropriate rinses or even warm water after you eat, and certainly cleaning your tongue. One mouth rinse that I recommend to my patients is the all natural Tooth and Gum Tonic. It is excellent for your gums and really makes your mouth feel fresh.

Visit your hygienist at least twice per year for cleanings, polishings, and your dentist for check-ups. Your dentist will help to determine if a case of bad breath can be managed in house, or if perhaps there is an underlying condition that needs to be addressed. Remember that prevention is key and dental problems are like a can of worms. Once they start and if left to progress, your mouth will deteriorate quickly, and mouth infection, be it soft tissue, bone, or tooth related, usually goes unnoticed until it becomes advanced. Early detection by your dentist will save you money, energy, and time and if arrested quickly can be maintained for a lifetime.

Bad breath is the general name for the medical condition known as halitosis (means ha-luh-toe-sus).

Bad breath is the general name for the medical condition known as halitosis (means ha-luh-toe-sus). Bad breath often happens after eating strongly flavoured foods, such as onions and garlic. Bad breath that’s of oral cavity source can be traced to a sulfur compound produced by bacteria.

There are lots of causes of bad breath, some temporary and others chronic. There are several medical conditions which can cause bad breath, including respiratory diseases which support bacteria growth in clogged airways and diabetes because of lowered resistance to oral infections. Dieting can also cause bad breath problem.

Alternatively, you can continue to try traditional home remedies for bad breath like drinking water. Drinking water will keep your body adequately hydrated and this can help to keep your bad breath under control. Tongue brushing or scraping is a quick home remedy for a quick fix. Many people focus on brushing the teeth but not the tongue.

Watch Your Eating habits: It is the problem most of the times! Some foods that you consume can be giving you that awful smell from your mouth. Like spices tend to cause bad breath. This is the easiest home remedy because it is so simple to avoid eating a meal or drinking a drink that can affect your breath.

Lemon juice squeeze the juice of half a lemon into some water and take several mouthfuls and swish around your mouth. This is one of my favorite bad breath home remedies because it leaves my mouth tasting great and feeling fresh!

Another good way to keep your tongue bacteria free is to use a gargle of baking soda dissolved in warm water. This is a very natural remedy and completely safe and is great at keeping your tongue clean.

It’s also a good idea to brush your tongue as well as your teeth in the morning; the tongue is home to millions of bacteria that accumulate after each meal. In addition to the above natural bad breath remedies, pick up a brand of toothpaste that fights plaque, microorganisms that accumulate on your teeth.

The most obvious of the home remedies for bad breath (halitosis) is simply attending to excellent oral hygiene. Brush your teeth after eating so that the surfaces of your teeth are clean and not coated with food that bacteria like to eat. Floss regularly to remove pieces of food that have gotten caught between the teeth.

Drink Tea. Studies show that teas, either black or green, contain compounds called polyphenols that are proven effective to stop growths of bacteria that normally cause bad breath. Furthermore, this compound can also help prevent any existing bacteria from developing malodorous compounds like hydrogen sulphide.

Pineapple juice is also good by helping to eliminate the bad smell as well. Do not forget to brush your teeth every morning, after meals and before you go to sleep. Brushing is still the most important thing to make your mouth smells good.

Green cardamom – Green cardamom contains a generous dose of cineol and limonene; both materials are excellent for masking halitosis due to their powerful fragrance and natural curative properties for eliminating bacteria. This herb is used for watering Indian dishes but is also one of the best means to get rid bad breath.
