O anúncio foi feito ontem nos Estados Unidos. O álbum foi classificado na categoria jazz.

Lançado em 1962, “Jazz Samba” tem sete músicas, das quais seis são de compositores brasileiros. São elas: “Desafinado” e “Samba de uma Nota Só”, ambas de Antônio Carlos Jobim e Newton Mendonça; “O Pato”, de Jayme Silva e Neuza Teixeira; “Samba Triste”, de Baden Powell e Billy Blanco; “É Luxo Só” e “Bahia”, ambas de Ary Barroso. Completa o disco, a música “Samba Dees Days”, composta por Charlie Byrd.

Poet, film critic, diplomat, and musician, Vinicius de Moraes is a Brazilian hero. Born in Rio de Janeiro, he was a passionate bohemian who will be remembered for his lasting impact on the bossa nova.

In the mid 50’s he penned the lyrics to Chega de Saudade. The song, composed by his good friend Tom Jobim, was recorded in 1959 by João Gilberto’s and would be the spark that started the bossa nova revolution in Brazil and later the world.

Also in 1959 Vinicius’ musical Orfeu da Conçeição, a modern Brazilian version of the greek tragedy of Orpheus and Eurydice, was adapted to the silver screen by French director Marcel Camus. Orfeu Negro won the Palm d’Or at Cannes, Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film. The music written by Vinicius and Jobim helped continue to bring bossa nova to the international scene.

In 1962 Vincius would write the lyrics to perhaps the most recognizable Brazilian song A Garota de Ipanema (The Girl from Ipanema – See previous post). The music was composed by Tom Jobim and made famous by João Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto and Stan Getz in 1964.

He would continue to write, record, and tour extensively throughout 60’s and 70’s, collaborating with the brilliant bossa nova guitarists Baden Powell and Toquinho. A personal favorite album is Os Afros Sambas, a Vinicius-Powell collaboration in 1966 that is a break from bossa nova. It was influenced by Afro Brazilian religions of which was of deep interest to Vinicius at the time.

Vinicius once called described whiskey as “a man’s best friend – it’s a bottled up dog”. It would eventually turn on him late in his life adding to health complications. He died at age 66 in Rio having married nine times.

According to the Scout Law: A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, Reverent.

Today let’s think about what it means to be Friendly. Now you can look at it just as a word in the dictionary which defines Friendly as: “a person who is in sympathetic relationship to oneself or one’s side; one who shows no hostility.”

But being a Friendly person means more than memorizing a definition, it means living a particular way of life. According to Scouting’s founder, Lord Baden-Powell in Scouting for Boys, c. 1908:

The great difference between bushmen and a stay-at-home city-dweller is that the first is in shirt-sleeves while the other is buttoned up in his coat. The bushman is open and cheery with everybody at once, while the city person is rather inclined to shut himself up from his neighbours inside his coat, and takes a deal of drawing out before he becomes friendly. The free, open-air, shirtsleeve habits of the man of the woods or the open spaces do away with this, and life becomes much more pleasant to everybody all round.

A Boy Scout should remember that he is like Kim, the “friend of all the world”. But don’t let your friendliness lead you into the foolery of throwing away your hard-earned savings in standing treat to your friends.

Our Scout Law says: “A Scout is a friend to all and a brother to every other Scout.” This has shown itself very much when our Jamborees have brought thousands of Scouts together from many different nations. The boys have found out that though they come from different countries they are after all very much alike in their tastes and amusements and that they can be jolly good friends with each other.

I want you Scouts to keep up that friendship and to make it wider and stronger. You can do this by writing to your Brother Scouts abroad and visiting them or by getting them to visit you in camp.

It will be fun for you and fun for them. But better than that it will be making friendships between you, so that if difficulties should arise later on between the different countries they will not at once want to go to war, but will talk things over as friends and see how to come to agreement without the cruel and unfair test of fighting.

Era mais ou menos assim que os calouros eram apresentados por Renato Murce e sua assistente, “miss Mary”, que nunca cheguei a saber quem era e se copiava alguém. O nome do programa era Papel Carbono, ia ao ar aos domingos de noite na PRE-8, Rádio Nacional, nos cada vez mais idos da década dos 40.

Era uma produção de Renato Murce, radialista veterano, responsável ainda por outro sucesso dominical na mesma Nacional, no mesmo domingo: Piadas do Manduca, um antecedente da Escolinha da Professor Raymundo. Renato Murce deixou registrado para sempre na história de nosso (arrã!) “sem fio” um número beirando o infindo de produções. Assim de estalo, sem googlar nada, me lembro também de Alma do Sertão. E que Renato Murce foi casado com Eliana, a nossa vedete dos filmes da Atlântida.

O nome do programa é a única implicância que eu tinha, e ainda tenho um pouco, para ser franco. Papel Carbono. Fica parecendo que os aspirantes à fama eram obrigados a imitar alguém. Nada disso. Simples bolação meio mal bolada apenas. Os calouros chegavam e mandavam sua brasa. Se é que a tinham. Para ficar num lugar-comum, pode-se dizer, sem medo de errar, que Papel Carbono foi um “celeiro de astros”. Atenção para alguns dos nomes que se apresentaram pela primeira vez no danado do programa do bom Murce. E aí, sim, eu googlei. Vamos lá. Ângela Maria, Os Cariocas, Doris Monteiro, Agnaldo Rayol, Roberto Carlos, Baden Powell e por aí afora. Só para dar uma ideia.

In the foreign land known popularly as the United States, there is a class of biscuit-cookies like no other.  These delicacies cannot be purchased in stores or shops.  They are only for sale during spring and can only be had by dealing with young girls in uniform.  Are you curious yet?  Do you know what these might be?  What product would use underage females in such a way in this day and age of child protection laws and helicopter mothers?  This is something with which I have the most intimate knowledge for I was at one time not only the leader of such a group of young ladies, aged eight through twelve years of age, but a leader also of the cookie-biscuit sales force, the Cookie Mom.

The organization is called the Girl Scouts in the states, the under ten year olds are called Brownies.  How appropriate.  My two female offspring were heavily involved in these goings on and I was their troop leader.  The largest fund raiser for the troop activities is the cookie-biscuit sales.  Each troop was required to sell a certain number of these sweet treats and prizes were awarded to the girls who sold certain quotas.  Order sheets were to be taken door to door for neighbors, friends and relatives to fill out how many boxes of each kind of several varieties they would like, to be delivered and paid for at a future date.  The numbers would be tallied, the boxes assembled and distributed by the Cookie Mom and the money collected by the girls.  Sounds like a piece of cake, doesn’t it?

Young girls collecting money, personal checks taken only as a last resort, door to door.  What could be more wonderful?  The cookies themselves vary from year to year with a couple of regulars, Thin Mints and Shortbreads always offered.  The price steadily rises while the number of cookies per box steadliy shrinks.  Surprisingly there are still many folks who will cheerfully pay for these sugary tooth breakers, remembering when their own little darlings were selling them or even when they themselves were part of this height challenged sales force.

Looking back through jaded eyes, it all seems outrageous now, if not some kind of child abuse.  But for several years we had cupboards filled to the brim with boxes of Tagalongs, Do-Si-Dos, Thin Mints and Shortbreads, my personal favorite for dunking in tea or coffee. There are cookbooks with recipes to use the cookies as basis for other desserts.  They also freeze well.  For anyone who was affiliated with this enterprise knows that the parents of the girls end up buying the majority of boxes.

Peanut Butter Sandwiches/Do-si-dos: Peanut butter filling sandwiched between crunchy oatmeal cookies.

Peanut Butter Patties/Tagalongs: Crispy vanilla cookies layered with peanut butter and covered with a chocolate coating.

Shortbreads/Trefoils: A traditional shortbread cookie made in the shape of the Girl Scout trefoil logo.

Samoas are also called Caramel deLites.Caramel DeLites/Samoas: Vanilla cookies coated in caramel, sprinkled with toasted coconut and laced with chocolate stripes.

All Abouts/Animal Treasures/Thanks-A-Lot: Shortbread cookies dipped in fudge and topped with an embossed thank-you message in one of five languages, including English, Spanish, French, Chinese, and Swahili.

Lemon Chalet Cremes: Cinnamon sandwich cookies with lemon creme filling.

Cinna-spins: Introduced in 2008 by ABC Bakers, Cinna-spins are cinnamon-flavored cookies that come in 100-calorie packs. Cinna-spins are shaped like miniature cinnamon rolls. Retired and replaced by Daisy Go Rounds.

Daisy Go Rounds: Very similar to Cinna-spins, this cookie replaced them for the 2009 sale. They are advertised as low fat and also come in 100 calorie packs. They are cinnamon flavored and shaped like daisies. These cookies are only available from ABC Bakers.

Sugar Free Chocolate Chips: Introduced in 2008, they are small sugar free cookies.

Dulce De Leche: Introduced in 2009, these are Latin caramel cookies.

Lemonades: Round shortbread cookie with lemon icing.

Eengonyama : canto (vedi voce) usato dagli Zulù per onorare il loro capo. Si può usare in marcia, come applauso per giochi, riunioni, fuochi da bivacco (vedi voce).
Si canta così:
Capo: Eengonyama – gonyama
Coro: Invoboo Ya-boh Ya-boh Invoboo
Traduzione:
Capo: Egli è un leone
Coro: Sì, è ancor di più, egli è un ippopotamo.

Eengonyama Scout: canto (vedi voce) e danza, oggi poco usati tra gli scouts, per onorare un capo (vedi voce) che ha compiuto compiti di importanza rilevante.

Su Scoutismo per Ragazzi, nella Chiaccherata intorno al Fuoco di Bivacco n. 4, lo stesso Baden Powell ci parla di questa danza, considerata oggi il massimo riconoscimento che si possa attribuire ad uno scout da parte di un altro membro scout o del suo Gruppo.

 Da Scoutismo per Ragazzi:

This is a chant that the African Zulus used to sing to their Chief. It may be shouted on the march, or used as applause at games and meetings and camp fires. It must be sung exactly in time.

Leader: Eengonyama-gonyama.
Chorus: Invooboo. Ya-Boh! Ya-Boh! Invooboo!

The meaning is:
Leader: “He is a lion!”
Chorus: “Yes! he is better than that; he is a hippopotamus!”

The Scout’s Rally.To be shouted as a salute, or in a game, or at any other appropriate time.

  Leader: Be Prepared!
Chorus: Zing-a-Zing! Bom! Bom!

The Scout’s Call. For a Scout to whistle to attract the attention of another Scout.

Scouts form up in one line with the leader in front, each holding his staff in the right band, and his left on the next man’s shoulder.  Leader sings the Eengonyama song. Scouts sing chorus, and advance a few steps at a time, stamping in unison on the long notes.

At the second time of singing they step backwards.

At the third, they turn to the left, still holding each other’s shoulders, and move round in a large circle, repeating the chorus until they have completed the circle.

They then form into a wide circle, into the centre of which one Steps forward and carries out a war dance, representing how he tracked and fought with one of his enemies. He goes through the whole fight in dumb show, until he finally kills his foe. The Scouts meantime sing the Eengonyama chorus and dance on their own ground. As soon as he finishes the fight, the leader Starts the “Be Prepared” chorus, which they repeat three times in honour of the Scout who has just danced.

Then they recommence the Eengonyama chorus, and another Scout Steps into the ring, and describes in dumb show how he stalked and killed a wild buffalo. While he does the creeping up and stalking of the animal, the Scouts all crouch and sing their chorus very softly, and as he gets close to the beast, they simultaneously spring up and dance and shout the chorus loudly. When he has slain the beast, the leader again gives the “Be Prepared” chorus in his honour, which is repeated three times, the Scouts banging their staffs on the ground at the same time as they stamp.

“Bom! Bom!” At the end of the third repetition, “Bom! Bom!” is given twice.

The circle then closes together, the Scouts turn to their left again, grasping shoulders with the left band, and move off, singing the Eengonyama chorus, or, if it is not desired to move away, they break up after the final “Bom! Bom!”

The Eengonyama song should be sung in a spirited way, and not droned out dismally like a dirge.

Das WSIS Kampala 2009 boykottieren!

Boykottaufruf betreffend das Dritte World Scout Inter-religious Symposium (WSIS). Verfasst von Cees van der Duin

Ugandas um 1890 gegründete Hauptstadt Kampala hat heute 1,4 Millionen Einwohner, das Handels- und Dienstleistungszentrum des ostfrikanischen Binnenstaates liegt nahe am Viktoriasee. Kampalas Name leitet sich von den zehn so genannten Antilopenhügeln (kasozi k’empala) her, die das Relief der äquatornahen, ganzjährig durch ein mildes Klima begünstigten und das Umland der auf 1100-1200 Metern Meereshöhe liegenden Metropole prägen. In Uganda leben 10 % Muslime beziehungsweise 10 % mehr oder weniger muslimisch sozialisierte Menschen. Die Obrigkeit der Umma, der muslimischen Weltgemeinschaft, beginnt sich um diese Seelen rührend zu kümmern.

Auf der deutschsprachigen Seite der international tätigen, türkisch-radikalislamischen Bewegung Milli Görüş (hierzulande: IGMG) berichtet uns Ömer Faruk Yıldız am 27. Januar 2009 von der wohltätigen „Opfertierkampagne“ sprich Islamisierungskampagne der IGMG aus Ugandas Hauptstadt Kampala, wo er die Zentralmoschee (New National Mosque, aufgrund ihrer Lage in der Altstadt genannt Old Kampala Mosque) besucht. Der einschüchternd mächtige Sakralbau auf dem Mengo Hill, die größte Moschee südlich der Sahara, wird nach dem libyschen „Führer der Völker, Brother Leader“ auch Gaddafi-Moschee genannt, schließlich der libysche Diktator seinen Bau bezahlt. Der Leiterin des Goethe-Instituts sowie dem deutschen Konsulat überreichte der türkischstämmige deutsche Freund des Gedankenguts von Necmettin Erbakan jeweils einen Koran.

Neben dem ugandischen Baumeister Allahs und Sponsor der für die genannte Moschee jährlich in Höhe von 200.000 US-Dollar anfallenden Kosten für Unterhalt und Reparatur Muammar al-Gaddafi und neben der deutschen, vom Verfassungsschutz als extremistisch eingestuften Milli Görüş sorgen sich also weitere gottesfürchtige Kreise um das Seelenheil der ostafrikanischen Muslime. So traf sich im Jahre 2008 die Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) im milden, grünen Kampala, jene OIC, welche die allgemeinen Menschenrechte ablehnt (Kairo 1990) und, völlig im Einklang mit Koran und Hadithen, halbierte Rechte für die Frauen und Nichtmuslime fordert.

OIC, Milli Görüş, al-Gaddafi, bei der Islamisierung (heiligen Kolonialisierung) Afrikas scheint es also einiges Gerangel der politreligiösen saudi-arabischen, türkischen und libyschen Goldgräber zu geben, letztlich aber wird man sich auf den kleinsten gemeinsamen Nenner namens Scharia und Kalifat einigen können. Ebenso wie in Europa Tariq Ramadan und Mustafa Cerić den absoluten Schariavorbehalt sprich die Rechtsspaltung „legalistisch“ (demokratieüberwindend) durchsetzen wollen, bringt die „Kairoer Erklärung der Menschenrechte im Islam“ die Eliten um al-Gaddafi und Milli Görüş keineswegs in einen Gewissenskonflikt.

Ugandas einstiger Gewaltherrschschaft unter Idi Amin fielen 250.000 bis 500.000 Menschen zum Opfer, dem Diktator selbst gelang 1979 die Flucht über Libyen in den Irak, sein Exil (und seinen Tod am 16. August 2003) fand der Massenmörder im saudi-arabischen Dschidda (Jeddah). Der Flughafen der 35 Kilometer von Kampala entfernten ehemaligen Hauptstadt Entebbe war 1976 Ort einer mit Hilfe Idi Amins durch überwiegend palästinensische Terroristen ausgeübten Entführung eines Flugzeuges der Air France. Die Maschine sollte von Tel Aviv nach Paris fliegen, wurde von der an Bord gelangten Gruppe von Terroristen gekapert und gewaltsam wenig zufällig ins „revolutionäre“ Libyen umgeleitet, wo sie auftanken durfte. Ziel der Geiselnahme war es, inhaftierte PLO-Aktivisten in Deutschland, Frankreich, Israel und der Schweiz zu befreien, ein Erpressungsversuch, der durch die Armee Israels (Operation Entebbe, später auch Operation Jonathan genannt) am 4. Juli 1976 glücklich durchkreuzt werden konnte. Unter den getöteten Entführern befanden sich zwei deutsche Linksterroristen der Revolutionären Zellen, darunter eine Studentin der Pädagogik.

Die 1907 gegründete, weltweit konzipierte Pfadfinderbewegung (Scouting, arabisch al-kashafa, al-kašāfa) ist in über 200 Staaten der Erde aktiv und fasst weltweit 38 Millionen Kinder und Jugendliche zusammen. Nichtkonfessionelle und konfessionelle Verbände arbeiten hierbei im Sinne der Jugenderziehung durch Gruppenerlebnis und Naturerlebnis. Zu den ehrenwerten ethischen Zielen des Scouting gehören Selbstvervollkommnung, Mitgefühl, Nächstenliebe, Gemeinwesenarbeit, Religionsfreundlichkeit und religiöse Toleranz sowie Völkerverständigung und Weltfrieden. Pfadfindertum ist mit einem säkularen Islam problemlos kompatibel. Scouting geht jedoch nicht mit der Scharia und dem schariatischen Fiqh (das islamische Recht) zusammen, in dem Menschenklassen verschiedener (Minder-)Wertigkeit geschaffen werden und die Frau einer geheiligten Entwürdigung und Entrechtung unterliegt. Das Weltpfadfinderbüro sieht das seit Jahrzehnten und schweigt, vielleicht hofft man ja auf eine Islamreform.

WSIS 2009

Vom 21. bis zum 25. Oktober tagt das 3RD WORLD SCOUT INTER-RELIGIOUS SYMPOSIUM im zehn Kilometer außerhalb von Kampala liegenden Speke Resorts, Munyonyo. Organisator ist das World Scout Inter-religious Forum (WSIF), nach eigener Aussage ein informelles Netzwerk religiöser Gruppen/Organisationen der Pfadfinderbewegung.

Gemeinschaftlicher ausgerichtet wird das interreligiöse pfadfinderische Treffens in Uganda von der religionspolitisch im Scharia-Islam eingekerkerten International Union of Muslim Scouts und der demokratiefähigen, traditionsreichen, im Jahre 1915 gegründeten Uganda Scouts Association. Die IUMS hat ihren Sitz in Idi Amins Todesort Dschidda, im frauenentrechtenden und gottgefällig hinrichtenden Saudi-Arabien. Innerhalb der letzten zwanzig Jahre wurden in Saudi-Arabien mehr als zweitausend Menschen hingerichtet, ungefähr tausend von ihnen waren ausländische Gastarbeiter, die das barbarische klassisch-islamische Blutgeld (diya) nicht bezahlen können. Von diesen „Hütern der Heiligen Stätten“ (Mekka und Medina), Anklagepunkt als todeswürdiges Verbrechen sind neben Mord und Drogenschmuggel auch Hochverrat, Ehebruch, Hexerei und Gotteslästerung, lässt man sich als Muslim Scout ungern oder auch gerne sein Zeltlager finanzieren. Gut Pfad.

Als gesetzesislamische geistliche Autorität steht der IUMS Dr. Abdullah Omar Naseef nahe oder vielmehr vor, religionspolitischer Führer der Muslim World League (MWL). Dr. Abdullah Omar Naseef hat gegen das Gedankengut der Ideologen der Muslimbruderschaft wie Abu l-A’la al-Mawdudi, Sayyid Qutb und Said Ramadan offenkundig nichts einzuwenden und war 1988 Gründer des nach US-amerikanischer Auffassung als Terrororganisation einzustufenden Rabita Trust.

Die International Union of Muslim Scouts (IUMS) entstand vor 28 Jahren. Aus der wahhabitisch-saudischen Gastfreundschaft in Tayef heraus fassten die versammelten Majestäten, Exzellenzen, Herrschaften und Präsidenten der islamischen Staaten den Entschluss, dass mehr für das leibliche, „wertebezogene“ und „spirituelle“ Wohl der Jugend getan werden müsse.

„Werte“ sind dabei selbstverständlich die sexualmagischen und antiaufklärerischen Werte der totalitären islamischen Pflichtenlehre (Scharia), „Spiritualität“ steht im Einklang mit der repressiven hanbalitischen Rechtsschule. Im Folgejahr antwortete die Qatar Scout Association (Doha 1982) mit der Ausrichtung eines schariatisch-scoutistischen Kongresses (1st Islamic Conference & Jamboree).

Die Doppelpackung politislamisch-pfadfinderisch ist bis heute beibehalten worden und widerspiegelt sich auch 2009 im zusammenaddierten, ungleichen Pärchen IUMS plus Uganda Scouts Association. Der die islamische Radikalisierung und die ethnoreligiöse Segregation wünschende Politislam betreibt die Nutzbarmachung des sportiv, kreativ und sozial gemeinten Pfadfindertums.

Wiederum ein Jahr darauf, im September 1983 wurde die zweite Doppeltitelveranstaltung des auch von Dhimmi-Seite zunehmend schariakonform veränderten Scoutismus veranstaltet. Das Treffen titelte als Islamic Conference and Jamboree, Gastgeber war die nordafrikanische islamisch-sozialistische Theokratie Libyen. Zeitgleich fand im Unrechtsstaat des Auftraggebers eines 259 Tote fordernden Terroranschlags (Sprengung eines Flugzeugs über dem schottischen Lockerbie am 21.12.1988), des amtierenden Präsidenten der Afrikanischen Union (African Union, Union africaine) Muammar al-Gaddafi das fünfzehnte Arabische Pfadfinder-Welttreffen, das 15th Arab Scout Jamboree statt.

Bemerkenswerterweise beschloss das Arab Scout Committee im Jahre 1984, Islamic Scout Jamboree und Arab Scout Jamboree voneinander zu trennen.

Im Jahr des deutschen Mauerfalls und der deutschen Wiedervereinigung 1989 erfolgte in dieser Tradition die Ausrufung der International Union Of Muslim Scouts (IUMS) auf dem gemeinsamen Treffen auf Gruppenleiterebene namens 3rd International Muslim Scouts Conference & 5th Islamic Scout Jamboree.

August 1992: Pakistan lädt zur Sechsten Islamischen Pfadfinderkonferenz (6th Islamic Scout Conference). Im 2009 heute leider revolutionär-radikalislamisch unterwanderten, korrupten Polizeistaat Pakistan (Bewohner zu 96 % Muslime, meist streng hanafitische Barelwis oder ultraorthodoxe Deobandis) sind Nichtmuslime wie etwa Christen, Hindus, Parsen und Kalasha seit Jahrhunderten Menschen zweiter Klasse, die man bestehlen und belästigen darf.

Sozusagen pakistanisch-volksislamisch unterliegen gerade die pakistanischen Christen seit Jahrzehnten eher unvorhersehbaren, sozusagen anfallsweise initiierten Pogromen, sie werden, deutsche Zeitungen schreiben darüber zumeist nicht, nach lautstark geäußerten, wenig glaubwürdigen Vorwürfen (den Propheten beleidigt, den Koran geschändet) angegriffen, vergewaltigt oder ermordet, ihre Häuser werden niedergebrannt. Der labile Staat Pakistan könnte vor einer Islamischen Revolution nach iranischem Modell stehen, er hat die militärpolitische Kontrolle über gewisse Stammesgebiete wie das Swat-Tal verloren. Der Staat des Islamisten, Generals, Putschisten und langjährigen Regierungschefs Zia-ul-Haq (1977) ist seit der erfolgreichen Spionage eines in einer muslimischen Mittelschichtfamilie in Indien geborenen Muslims im Besitz von Nuklearwaffen. Aufgrund schlampiger Sicherheitsvorkehrungen gelang es dem Ingenieur Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, im niederländischen Atomforschungszentrum von Almelo im Laufe der Jahre 1972-1976 in den Besitz von Bauplänen für Zentrifugen für Urananreicherung zu kommen. Allahs pakistanischer Statthalter Zia-ul-Haq nannte die erstrebenswerte Gesellschaftsordnung Islamische Ordnung (nizam islami), führte die Scharia vollumfänglich ein und ließ Dieben folgerichtig die Hand abhacken, unter den Islamisten aller Welt wurde Pakistan so das Referenzmodell für einen „gerechten“ (islamischen) Staatsentwurf.

Auf der 33 Konferenz der höchsten Funktionäre der Weltpfadfinderverbände (weiblich WAGGGS und männlich WOSM), 33rd World Scout Conference, stellte sich die IUMS öffentlich vor beziehungsweise erklärte ihre künftige Anwesenheit bei allen Veranstaltungen und wurde Stunden später, Pfadfinder sind höflich und fremdenfreundlich, offiziell anerkannt. Das geschah im thailändischen Bangkok des Jahres 1993. In Thailand leben 5 % Muslime und ist der Buddhismus (Theravada) de facto Staatsreligion, lediglich im äußersten Süden (Provinzen Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat) stellen sie 30 % der über 15jährigen Bevölkerung, wo in den letzten Jahren leider dschihadistische Milizen grausame Morde an Nichtmuslimen begangen haben.

Das marokkanische Casablanca war im Juli 1994 Ort der 7th Islamic Summit Conference, dort wurde man inhaltlich: „Integrate spiritual with scouting understanding in all Muslim scout activities and programs and make them have strong believe in God.“ Während der grandiose Optimist und pragmatische, etwas pantheistische Weltbürger und Sportsgeist Lord Baden-Powell ganz selbstverständlich religiös empfand und niemandem auf der Welt sein Gottesbild wegnehmen wollte, wird hier von einer „Integration des Spirituellen mit dem Pfadfinderischen“ gesprochen. Scouting war also nicht „spirituell“ genug.

Fundamentalismuskritikern ist so etwas ganz ungefähr aus gewissen kleinen, christlich-fundamentalistisch geprägten pfadfinderischen Organisationen bekannt. Mit „strong believe in God“ aber könnte die Islamische Revolution gemeint sein und müssen wir eine auffällig angestrengte Umschreibung (kitman, Lügen durch Auslassung) der Worte Hisba, Fiqh und Scharia vermuten. Der muslimische Pfadfinder, auch der französische oder britische, soll also künftig der politreligiösen Gehorsamspflicht unterliegen, und was darunter zu verstehen ist, sagen ihm die saudischen Wahhabiten beziehungsweise wissen ja vielleicht auch die weltweit agitierenden Brüder der al-ichwan al-muslimun, der Muslimbruderschaft, von denen sich die IUMS selbstverständlich ebenso wenig distanziert wie von Yusuf al-Qaradawi.

Vorangestellt war der Satz „Select and train scout leaders according to clear understanding of Islamic teachings and scouting requirements for youth“. Die nicht schariakonformen Gruppenleiterinnen und Gruppenleiter sollen also ausgesiebt werden, das ganzheitlich-kreative (sportlich-musisch-soziale) Programm der seit 1907 typischen Scout-Jugendarbeit ist demgegenüber dezidiert nachrangig.

Wird denn nicht überall da, wo von Religionsfreiheit, Schutz von Nichtmuslimen, Säkularisierungsprozessen und (fundamentalismuskritischer; islamkritischer) Pressefreiheit gar nicht erst die Rede ist, die Formel „Peace to cover the hole world and scouting work for better world under the umbrella of One World One Law and One Promise“ ein wenig zum Ruf nach dem Kalifat? Ist „Peace“ denn dann nicht vorzugsweise Islamic Peace und „One Law“ etwas anderes als das Sharia-Law?

Mädchen islamverbandlich einsperren, Frauen bändigen: „Provide union coverage to the formation of Muslim girls guide under umbrella of IUMS.“ Weib, der (pfadfinderische) Kalif ist erstens männlich und weiß zweitens, wo es lang geht. Schluss mit dem pfadfinderischen Lotterleben.

Ein müdes „Encourages cooperation between Muslim and non-Muslim scout“ setzt die berüchtigte Islamsensibilität voraus sprich den Verzicht an jeder Kritik des Nichtmuslimen am orthodoxen beziehungsweise politischen Islam. Zusammenarbeit mit islamkompatiblen Nichtpfadfindern, „cooperation with non-scout organizations of similar nature“ hingegen wird, tolerant herrschend, akzeptiert.

Zu dem seinerzeit Sünder öffentlich auspeitschenden oder hinrichtenden König Fahad Ibn Abdul-Aziz († 2005) bekennt sich die International Union Of Muslim Scouts (IUMS), die eigentlich, man kann das überlesen, die islamisch-spirituelle das bedeutet repressiv-religionspolitische Führung über alle muslimischen Pfadfinder weltweit („representing Muslim Scouts all over the world“) beansprucht, was bereits heute das Pfadfindertum in Frankreich und Großbritannien und in nicht ferner Zukunft auch die Jugendarbeit vieler Staaten Europas meinen wird.

2009 bedeutet die Unterstützung der IUMS ein Befördern des politreligiösen Ansinnens der FEMYSO (Forum of European Muslim Youth and Student Organisations), deren erster Präsident Ibrahim el-Zayat hieß. Die deutschen Jugendverbände der FEMYSO sind die Jugendabteilung der Milli Görüş (IGMG) und die 1994 im Haus des Islam (HDI) in Lützelbach, Odenwald, durch Mohammed Siddiq Borgfeldt mitgegründete Muslimische Jugend in Deutschland (MJD). Die im Juni 1996 von WAMY (World Assembly of Muslim Youth, Dachverband von 450 Organisationen, Vertretungen in 35 Staaten) und FIOE (Federation of Islamic Organisations in Europe, das ist ungefähr die Muslimbruderschaft Europas) gemeinschaftlich gegründete FEMYSO kann für freiheitlich-demokratische und damit auch für pfadfinderische Jugendverbände kein Kooperationspartner sein. Die Namensähnlichkeit des im englischen Wikipedia unter Europäischer Fatwa-Rat (ECFR) Nummer 25 genannten “Sheikh Muhammed Siddique (Germany)” mit dem gerade genannten MJD-Mitgründer, dem Odenwälder Herrn Muhammad Siddiq (Wolfgang Borgfeldt) aus Lützelbach ist bemerkenswert, zumal Wikipedia deutsch unter MJD ausführt: “MJD-Gründer Muhammad Siddiq ist Mitglied des ECFR, dessen Vorsitzender Yusuf al-Qaradawi ist”. Ob Scheich oder Nichtscheich, die treue FEMYSO möchte ihr Leben offiziell nach den Weisungen des Fatwa-Rates (ECFR) ausrichten.

Zu ihrer politreligiösen Einbindung bekennt die IUMS: „Active member of World Assembly of Muslim Youth“.

Ob das selbstbewusste Weltweite islamische Pfadfindertum („To motivate and promote Islamic Scouting on global basis“) etwas anderes als eine weltweite Islamisierung wünscht? Die Gefahr der globalen muslimischen Gegengesellschaft sollten WAGGGS und WOSM beachten, die Unvereinbarkeit von Scharia und Allgemeiner Erklärung der Menschenrechte (AEMR) müssen Pfadfinderinnen und Pfadfinder endlich hörbar betonen, um sich nicht länger mitschuldig zu machen, den religiösen Nichtmuslimen, säkularen Muslimen und Ex-Muslimen in islamisch geprägten Ländern und längst auch in Europa die mühselig errungene Freiheit zu rauben.

Die Kooperation mit der IUMS gefährdet die Glaubwürdigkeit der Weltpfadfinderbewegung als eine mit der kulturellen Moderne und der freiheitlichen Demokratie kompatible Form der Jugenderziehung und Jugendbildung. Nicht zuletzt geht es um universelle, gleichheitsfeministisch gedachten Frauenrechte, denn die hier erwähnte Traditionslinie der IUMS, ihre offenkundige Loyalität zur Wahhabiyya, zur Muslimbruderschaft, zu Muammar al-Gaddafi (Libya 1983) und zu womöglich ja auch zum in Katar lebenden, unter Sunniten hoch angesehenen Yusuf al-Qaradawi („Qatar took the initiate and held the first Muslim Scout Conference, Doha 1982″) tritt das zivilisatorische Streben der einen Menschheit nach der Gleichberechtigung der Frau mit Füßen.

Auch ist davon auszugehen, dass die politreligiösen Funktionäre der in die WAMY eingebundenen IUMS glühende Israelhasser sind. Als veritabler deutscher Zweig der radikalislamischen Muslimbruderschaft kann die Islamischen Gemeinschaft in Deutschland (IGD, vgl. Islamisches Zentrum München) gelten, der einstige IGD-Vorsitzende Ibrahim el-Zayat ist in der WAMY führend aktiv (Vertreter für Westeuropa). An alle, die in der Pfadfinderarbeit Verantwortung tragen, sei die Frage gerichtet, ob folgendes denn etwa die Ethik des gut hundertjährigen Scouting ist, was WAMY zum Thema Kindererziehung predigt: „Lehrt unsere Kinder zu lieben, dass Rache an den Juden und den Unterdrückern genommen wird und lehrt sie, dass unsere Jugend Palästina und Al-Quds [Jerusalem] befreien wird, wenn sie zum Islam zurückkehren und den Jihad um der Liebe Allahs wegen ausüben.“

Das Blog für Pfadfinderische Islamkritik „Eifelginster“ beobachtet die Re-Fundamentalisierung der muslimisch geprägten Individuen, Großfamilien und Staaten mit großer Sorge und richtet an die europäischen und eben auch deutschen Pfadfinderverbände die dringende Bitte, am interreligiösen Treffen 3RD WORLD SCOUT INTER-RELIGIOUS SYMPOSIUM, 21 -25 OCTOBER 2009, SPEKE RESORT MUNYONYO, KAMPALA – UGANDA nicht teilzunehmen. Den in den pfadfinderischen Verbänden organisierten Kindern und Jugendlichen sei die offene islamismuskritische und schariakritische Diskussion, Meinungsbildung und innerverbandliche Meinungsvertretung empfohlen.

Statt die gesetzesislamischen, durchweg faschistoiden bis faschistischen Staatskonzepte und Menschenbilder, statt die Islamvorstellungen der Wahhabiten und Muslimbrüder weiterhin zu bagatellisieren oder zu beschweigen, sollten Europas in WAGGGS bzw. WOSM organisierte Jugendverbände die Zusammenarbeit mit denjenigen muslimischen, außereuopäisch-christlichen sowie israelischen Strömungen vertiefen, die sich auf Pressefreiheit, Wissenschaftlichkeit, Säkularität und universelle Menschenrechte hinzu bewegen.

Das Pfadfindertum des Nahen Ostens hat eine reiche Geschichte. Während die erste türkische Pfadfindergruppe an der Istanbuler Imperial Galatasaray High School und noch im Osmanischen Reich durch den englisch-türkischen Lehrer Ahmet Robinson ins Leben gerufen wurde, der auch die türkischen Worte für „Pfadfinder, Pfadfinderei“ (Izci, Izcilik) prägte, standen die armenischen Pfadfindergruppen bereits vor dem antiarmenischen Völkermord (1915-1917) zumeist der 1918 in Istanbul von Shavarsh Khrissian und Hovhannes Hintlian gegründeten, patriotisch-sportiven Homenetmen-Bewegung (HoMenEtMen) nahe.

Im Bereich der Weltsprache des Arabischen war es vermutlich der Hochschullehrer Mamduh Haqqi aus dem nordsyrischen Aleppo (arab. Halab, 15-20 % der Einwohner sind Christen verschiedener Bekentnisse), der im Jahre 1929 als Erster das Buch »Scouting for Boys« als »al-Kashafa« ins Arabische übersetzte. Im Vorjahr hatte Hassan al-Banna in Ägypten die dezidiert antimoderne, radikalislamische Muslimbruderschaft gegründet, nachmaligen Wurzelgrund etlicher Terrorgruppen. Es wäre schön, wenn der Geist des »Scouting for Boys« (… and Girls) zur Demokratisierung des nahen Ostens und Afrikas beitragen kann, und ganz anders als Kulturrassist Hassan al-Banna hat Pädagoge Mamduh Haqqi seinen Beitrag für die Jugenderziehung des arabischen Sprachraumes geleistet. Die israelische Pfadfinderbewegung der für alle Kinder und Jugendlichen, auch für christliche und muslimische, offen stehenden, durchweg koedukative Hit’ahdut HaTzofim VeHaTzofot BeYisrael kurz: „Tzofim“ entstand 1919 und feiert dieses Jahr stolz ihr neunzigjähriges Jubiläum. Seit Jahren aber feuern radikalislamisch orientierte Palästinenser Kassam-Raketen aus dem Gaza-Streifen aufs israelische Sderot ab. Welchen Umgang mit dem das Weltpfadfindertum offensichtlich gezielt und menschenrechtswidrig beeinflussenden politischen Islam sind Europas und gerade auch Deutschlands Pfadfinderverbände denn unseren jüdischen Pfadfinderverbänden etwa der USA, Kanadas, Frankreichs und Israels schuldig, damit das 1907 gestiftete Ideal von der weltweiten Bruderschaft auch in Zukunft glaubhaft erfüllt werden kann?

Was für ein Islambild hat und wünscht die offizielle Pfadfinderbewegung sieben Jahrzehnte nach dem erscheinen des pfadfinderischen Handbuches »Scouting for Boys / al-Kashafa«, wenn ihr im Jahre 2009 auf dem interreligiösen Treffen in Kampala sogar wahhabitisch finanzierte und Muammar al-Gaddafi wie auch der Muslimbruderschaft kaum verhohlen nahe stehende Gruppen als annehmbare Dialogpartner gelten? Es gibt unter muslimisch sozialisierten Menschen weit mehr an Weltbürgertum und gutem Geschmack als lediglich die ewiggestrigen Rufer nach der frauenfeindlichen islamischen Orthodoxie oder die Parteigänger der die Pressefreiheit, Religionsfreiheit und Menschenrechte verhindernden islamistischen Politreligion.

Zivilcouragierte muslimische Frauen und Männer gibt es schließlich auch, und gerade für diese, die allgemeinen Menschenrechte verlangenden und damit auf die weitgehende Trennung von Religion und Politik angewiesenen Menschen haben WOSM und WAGGGS einzustehen, nicht für die Architekten der Gegenmoderne und Gottesherrschaft.

I’m not sure where I first heard this, but I bring it up every time someone is talking about rhythms versus melodies: a descending C major scale + rhythm = Joy To The World.

I’m sure there are many interpretations of this, but to me it says that melody requires rhythm to be memorable; otherwise, you end up in freeform jazz and new music land, where you have to pretend to enjoy and understand things while trying not to vomit on the pure pretentiousness of it all.

A significantly more interesting, beautiful, and complex experiment in rhythm and melody is Baden Powell’s Choro Para Metronomo (literally: “Choro for Metronome”). Baden Powell was one of Brazil’s best guitarists and composers, and yes, I appear to be in a Brazilian rut these days (not nearly as dirty as it sounds). The liner notes from Le Monde Musical de Baden Powell (1964) describe Choro Para Metronomo like this:

CHORO PARA METRONOME is quite a challenge. The choro which was originally an improvisation over folkloric patterns, turns here into a guitar piece. The metronome replaces the whole rhythm section. Fitting perfectly with this soulless rhythm, Baden Powell shows here his astounding technique.

Noi del movimento Guide non siamo d’accordo con questa tradizione giapponese e per questa ragione il Pesce d’Argento è la decorazione massima che una Guida possa conseguire, il riconoscimento e la ricompensa per la capacità e l’abilità della ragazza di scegliere la propria strada contro tempeste e difficoltà.

Over the last number of years, I have written several articles about Baden-Powell, the remarkable founder of the world-wide Scouting and Guiding movements.  Both Lord and Lady Baden-Powell were born on February 22nd, a coincidence which has led to the widespread celebrating of their lives every February with events like Parent-son banquets, church parades, and thinking days. 

In thinking about Lord Baden Powell, I was struck by the unexpected similarities between Baden Powell and Winston Churchill.  Both, for example, came into international recognition through their miraculous escapes and bravery in the South African Boer War.  Both were courageous, determined men who inspired millions of others to try their best and to never, never give up.  Admittedly, they had many differences as well.  For example, Churchill lived in the world of politics and power, while Baden-Powell lived in the world of boys and backpacks.  As well, Baden-Powell clearly warned against the dangers of smoking and drinking, while Churchill was famous for his cigar and glass of brandy.

At a deeper level however, their common determination and perseverance has had remarkable impact on the character development of millions.  Churchill once went to a meeting of students, where he stood up and said: “Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, give up. Never give up. Never give up. Never give up.”.  Then he sat down.  In his 1937 book Great Contemporaries, Churchill included one whole chapter on Baden Powell.  In describing Baden-Powell’s Scouting movement, Churchill said: “It is difficult to exaggerate the moral and mental health which our nation had derived from this profound and simple conception.”  Churchill described Baden-Powell (B.P.) as one of the three most famous generals he had ever known.

Churchill first met Baden-Powell while B.P. was acting as an Austrian Hussar in an amateur vaudeville entertainment, given for the British Army in India.  Three years later, Churchill interviewed B.P. for a newspaper article about B.P.’s famous 217-day defence of Mafeking in South Africa.  Churchill said of this interview: “…once B.P. got talking, he was magnificent.”  Churchill commented: “In those days, B.P.’s fame as a soldier eclipsed almost all popular reputations.  The other B.P. – the British Public – looked upon him as the outstanding hero of the War.  Even those who disapproved of the War, and derided the triumphs of large, organized armies over the Boer farmers, could not (help but) cheer the long, spirited, tenacious defence of Mafeking by barely eight hundred men against a beleaguering force ten or twelve times their number.”

“No one”, said Churchill, ” had ever believed that Mafeking would hold out half as long. A dozen times, as the siege dragged on, the watching nation had emerged from apprehension and despondency into renewed hope, and had been cast down again.”  By the end of the siege, Mafeking had become so famous that it turned into a verb: “to Mafeking meant to celebrate uproariously”.  Churchill noted that “when finally the news of Mafeking’s relief was flashed throughout the world, the streets of London became impassable, and the floods of sterling cockney patriotism was released in such deluge of unbridled, delirious, childish joy as was never witnessed again until Armistice Night in 1918.”

Churchill, too, became an instant hero through his adventures in South Africa.  On May 15th in 1899, Winston Churchill the newspaper journalist was accompanying 150 soldiers on an armoured train, when suddenly it was ambushed and derailed.  Churchill took command in clearing the lines, and took 60 men, many of them wounded, away to safety.  Upon returning to help the other troops, Winston was captured, despite his protest that he was just a journalist.  After 3 weeks in captivity, Churchill escaped over the prison wall, jumped a train, hid in a mine, and finally escaped by train.  In the afterglow of his amazing adventure, Churchill was elected to the British Parliament at the young age of 25.

Neither B.P. nor Churchill were particularly successful in their early school days.  B.P.’s school reports read:

1) Classics: Seems to take very little interest in his work

2) Mathematics: Has to all intent given up the study of mathematics

3) Science: Pays not the slightest attention, except in one week at the beginning of the quarter

4) French: Could do well, but has become very lazy; often sleeps in school. 

Churchill was described by one of his teachers as “the naughtiest small boy in the world”.  His father warned him: “I am certain that if you cannot prevent yourself from leading the idle unprofitable life you have had during your school days, you will become a mere social wastrel, one of the hundreds of public school failures, and you will degenerate into a shabby and futile existence.”  Both B.P. and Churchill preferred to learn their lessons from nature than from a classroom. 

Baden-Powell once said: “Say your prayers regularly, read that wonderful old book, the Bible, and read that other wonderful old book, the Book of nature, and see and study all that you can of the wonders and beauties that nature provides for your enjoyment.  Then turn your mind to how you can best serve God while you still have the life that He has lent you.”  Churchill loved animals and loved to paint the beauties of nature.  After his crushing election defeat right after V-Day, Churchill went to the Mediterranean where he said: “I paint all day and every day, and have banished care and disillusionment to the shades.”

Despite the many setbacks and defeats in both B.P.’s and Churchill’s life, neither of them ever gave up the struggle to fulfill their visions.  Churchill described B.P. as a “man of character, vision, and enthusiasm.”  Winston described what he saw as the marks of a scout: sturdiness, neighbourliness, practical competence, love of country and , above all in these times, indomitable resolve, daring and enterprise in the face of the enemy.  “BE PREPARED”, said Churchill, ” to stand up faithfully for Right and Truth, however the winds may blow.”

Similarly, Baden-Powell said that it is the stickability of the man that really counts.  Stickability for B.P. was “that mixture of pluck, patience, and strength which we call endurance.”  Stickability “…will pull a person out of many a bad place when everything seems to be going wrong for him.”

As I think of Baden-Powell’s and Churchill’s stickability, I am reminded of the words of wisdom: “Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”  May the God of endurance fill each of us with stickability as we face life’s challenges.

Baden-Powell, the founder of the world-wide Scouting movement, preferred to learn his lessons from nature rather from a classroom.  B.P. was not an academic success. His school reports read:

1) Classics: Seems to me to take very little interest in his work 

2) Mathematics: Has to all intent given up the study of mathematics 

3) Science: Pays not the slightest attention, except in one week at the beginning of the quarter 

4) French: Could do well, but has become very lazy; often sleeps in school.

Baden-Powell was a bit of a loner in school, somewhat reserved though never unpopular.  Given a choice, he preferred the solitary pursuits of exploring the woods round the Charterhouse school in Surrey, England. There he learnt  how to snare rabbits and cook them in secret with a smokeless fire, how to use an axe,  how to creep silently through the bush, how to hide his tracks, how to identify the different kinds of animals and plants, and how to climb a tree and hide from the school authorities.  B.P. said that it was in those woods that he gained most of what helped him later in life to find the joy of living.

School of the Outdoors

It is no wonder that years later Baden-Powell that the object in Scouting “was to wean (the boys) from indoors and to make the outdoors attractive to them.”  B.P. described Scouting as a school of the outdoors.  Scouting, said B.P., was not a science, nor a military code. Rather “it is a jolly game in the outdoors,  where boy-men can go adventuring together as older and younger brother, picking up health and happiness, handicraft and helpfulness.”

As Scouting was first developing, B.P said to his adult leaders: “… give your boys all you can of woodcraft and Nature study…The Nature study should be a real close touch with Nature, far beyond the academic dipping into the subject which passes under the name in school.  Collecting, whether of plants or bugs, and investigation, whether of beasts or birds, are all-absorbing studies for the boy and mighty good for him.” 

Why was Baden-Powell so exciting about Nature study and Outdoor camping? Because B.P. saw it as a “golden chance to bring the boy to God through the direct appeal of Nature and her store of wonders.”  Nature study for B.P. was a character-building, and spiritual exercise.  Nature study, said B.P., “gives the best means of opening out the minds and thoughts of boys, and at the same time…gives them the power of appreciating beauty in Nature and consequently in art…”  Nature study  helped “the realization of God, the Creator, through His wonderous work, and the active performance of His will in service for others.”

I believe that Baden-Powell might have really enjoyed living on the North Shore with its unforgettable beauty of mountain, forests, and sea.  B.P. would have reminded us that “the mystery of the sea and the heavens, and the fascination of the colouring of the scene, and the modelling of the scene” all point to God’s handiwork.   Baden-Powell saw all of nature as gifts from God.  We all teach our children to say “thank you” for birthday and Christmas presents.  How much more should we say “thank you” for God’s gifts of nature?  B.P. said “We teach the boy that a gift is not his till he has expressed his gratitude for it.  His attitude to God is, therefore, thankfulness for benefits received; and his method for expressing this is through service, in behalf of God, to his fellow-men. 

To Baden-Powell, the question was not what can I get from life, but what can I give in life.  When dealing with conflicts in the Scouting movement, B.P. recommended that people “…ask themselves the simple question,   `What would Christ have done under the circumstances?’ and be guided accordingly”.

In a last message found among B.P.’s papers after he had died, he said:  “Dear Scouts,…I believe that God put us in this jolly world to be happy and enjoy life.  Happiness doesn’t  come from being rich, not merely from being successful in your career, not by self-indulgence.  One step towards happiness is to make yourself healthy and strong while you are a boy, so that you can be useful and so can enjoy life when you are a man.  Nature study will show you how full of beautiful and wonderful things God has made the world for you to enjoy.  Be contented with what you have got and make the best of it…”

My prayer is that we too, like Baden-Powell, may be filled with gratitude to God our Creator for the wonderful gift of Nature.

A Troop One Boy Scout shows what it means to be kind while volunteering at the Hawaii Foodbank.

According to the Scout Law: A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, Reverent.

Have you thought about the Scout Law? Today, let’s think about what it means to be Kind.

To do so let’s go back to the founder of Scouting, Lord Baden-Powell for his thoughts on the subject. As he wrote in Scouting for Boys, c. 1908:

“Kindness and gentleness are great virtues”, says an old Spanish proverb. And another says, “Oblige without regarding whom you oblige”, which means be kind to anyone, great or small, rich or poor.

The great point about a knight was that he was always doing kindnesses or good turns to people. His idea was that everyone must die, but you should make up your mind that before your time comes you will do something good. Therefore do it at once, for you never know when you may be going off.

So, with the Scouts, it has been made one of our promises that we help other people at all times. It does not matter how small that good turn may be, if it only be to help an old woman lift her bundle, or to guide a child across a crowded street, or to put a coin in the poor-box.

Something good ought to be done each day of your life. Start today to carry out this rule, and never forget it during the remaining days of your life. Remember the knot in your neckerchief and on your Scout badge – they are reminders to you to do a Good Turn. And do your good turn not only to your friends, but to strangers as well.
