I’ve continued to get pugged into Cloudy Day raids. Last night, I was involved in the downs of Supremus and Shade of Akama in Black Temple, which was REALLY exciting. Good times were had by all. Unfortunately nothing dropped for me, but I still had a great time in there, and look forward to doing it again in the future. Akama was especially fun, what with doing multiple things–CC and hardcore DPS–at different times in the fight. The DPS race to get the boss from 100% to 0% within a minute was some of the most fun I’ve ever had–of course I was in total panic mode!

Tonight, things didn’t go so well–we wiped a couple times on both Vashj and Hydross (!) which was really too bad, but I got to see the Hydross fight, which was something I hadn’t done before. Very fun, and quite a unique concept for a fight–we wiped because he had two phase changes very close together and we got overwhelmed by elementals. =(

All this stuff is new to me, and is also very cool. Provides a welcome change from my 22-badge-a-week Kara runs with NI. =O

Well, I hit 1400 DPS today in H-SP during a boss fight. Very exciting. =D

In more significant news, I’ve chosen to retitle the blog *TEMPORARILY* to reflect my respec. I will probably be respeccing back to Fire at some point however.

Also, I’m getting a lot of badges every day now-6 or more daily. Having some great runs, and looking forward to getting a huge upgrade for my gloves soon, like tomorrow-ish. (Still using the Attumen gloves from forever ago.)

Tried Mag’s for the first time. Terribly geared pug; I was like 4th best geared behind a tank and a couple healers, and was outDPSing people by like 200. One of our DPSers, a rogue, had a 77 gear rating and also pulled Mag once. >_> Poor raid leadership, no Ventrilo or TS, and poor off-tanking and DPS caused it to fail; sad, because I’m trying for Champion of the Naaru!

My druid dinged 38 today too–very exciting!

Well, my birthday was yesterday (9/8). I can now legally gamble (yay!), smoke (not planning to), and buy porn. (Also not gonna happen). Thrilling. =P

I’ve also done another run recently in SSC with Cloudy Day–I also got a chance to see some T6 content running with Cloudy Day as well, trying to down Archimonde. A surprisingly simple fight, but required more coordination than we had. However, in SSC, I rolled 2nd place for the T5 pants–and looked in loot, and saw that there were 2 tokens. So I got my 2/5 T5, and respecced Arcane. It seems to be going well – although I am having some mana management issues and am also adjusting to the huge burst damage. So far it seems like a very fun spec, and I’m looking forward to giving it a test run in Kara tonight. Due to talents, I have +1119 arcane damage now too!

On a realted note….MAD props to Cloudy Day for pugging in some DPS and letting people see this content before the expansion comes out. Pwni did a great job with a multi-guild run, putting it all together and being patient with the people (like me) who had never even been in these instances, or the people (not like me) who were in greens and dungeon blues.

Unfortunately, this means I had to give up my [Inferno Waist Cord], as it only gave me +fire damage, so I was using a [Sash of Serpentra] for a while–terrible belt, but better than nothing. However, I got up to 60 badges today, so I bought my new [Voodoo-woven Belt], which I can keep for a long time. =)

It’s been an exciting last couple days. I’m anxious to see what the future will hold!

I’m also working on building a new computer–plan to dual screen so I can play wow on one monitor and browse the Internet/theorycraft on the other. I’m just waiting for a motherboard to ship right now–should be here tomorrow!

Well, I’m headed off to college this Saturday. Once I get there, I’ll hopefully get back into the swing of things quickly. I’ll try to keep this blog WoW-focused, but I may intersperse my posts with updates on RL stuff.

I’m raiding Kara this Wednesday and Friday–hoping to get all the badges I need so I can get my new boots before I leave for college. Hopefully I’ll be settled enough by Tuesday to participate in our first one-day Kara clear.

Haven’t actually packed for college yet, and it’s a 6-hour drive up–my current plan is to pack at about 11:30 Friday night, after Kara finishes. =)

I’ve gotten really good at doing dailies recently. Finished all my Isle dailies as well as a couple in HFP in about an hour–got the master cookbook too! Working towards skill 320 so I can cook [Poached Bluefish], my usual raid consumable. That should cut down on expenses–all I’ll have to pay for after that is my [Flask of Pure Death]/elixirs and my mana pots/Flame Caps.

I probably won’t be posting again till about Sunday or Monday. Until then, happy trails!

All three planned strategies are up! I’d appreciate reviews/links/comments on/to them!

Also, if anyone would like a strategy on another Kara boss or a specific situation (think Illhoof without a lock, or something, as a quick example) just let me know and I’ll get back to you with my take on it as soon as I can!

In terms of in-game news for me, I just got to Exalted with The Violet Eye! The [Violet Signet of the Archmage] is a great ring. Still looking for the [Nathrezim Mindblade] off Prince (won’t be getting it this week unfortunately) but I am closing in on the badge boots. Also thinking about picking up [Icon of the Silver Crescent] to replace [Quagmirran's Eye], any suggestions?

I’m gonna be headed off to college next week! Kind of excited but at the same time a little nervous. However I do think it will be a fun experience.

And this time we rocked Prince with a feral druid and 3 paladins. =) We just straight up pwn.

Got some new shoulders-[Mantle of the Mind Flayer] – and the [Uni-Mind Headdress] which will be nice for my HR. Still kinda want [Fel-Tinged Mantle] from H-MgT though–it’d help me a lot more than the Kara shoulders will.

Even so, I had a great run personally, and of course full-clearing 2 weeks in a row is nice for the guild as a whole. We’re starting Gruul’s at the end of this month, and until then I’m thinking about pugging it and Mag’s just to get a feel for it. There’s no way I can mage-tank, though–just not enough stamina atm. Hopefully Nathan’s got a set of greens, lol.

[Corrupted Soulcloth Pantaloons]. I was convinced to wait and get the [Scryer's Blade of Focus]. and who knows? The [Trial-Fire Leggings] might drop out of Kara this week, or I could save 1.5k and get the Spellstrike pants! It’s only 50 more badges for the blade anyway, and said blade owns face. I won’t be upgrading it for a while anyway.

I got 12 badges today-6 from H-MgT, 3 from Ramps, and 3 from BF. All sorts of fun! If I could keep that pace up I’d be so happy. =O

I did also get [Timbal's Focusing Crystal] today—with all of this new gear, I’m finding it a little difficult to adjust to the increased threat. Hopefully, I can get Subtlety tomorrow-I made a lot of money today (actually did dailies) and one of the chanters in our guild got enough Thrallmar rep during Ramps to get the chant!

[Scarlet Sin'dorei Robes] dropped too, but unfortunately I was pugging and someone else won the roll. =( Oh well. Grats to whoever got it (Can’t remember your name, sorry!)

Anyone have any suggestions/comments towards badge gear?

I will be writing my Netherspite strategy after Kara tomorrow, or Friday morning. Not entirely sure yet.

Part one of a three-part series on some of the hardest Kara bosses; the one difficult Kara boss whom I will not be doing a feature on is Shade, as most people know the strategy for him. =)

For the purposes of this post, I’m gonna assume you’ve already cleared through Shade/Illhoof/Chess, so the only remaining trash is Prince and Netherspite trash. (Nightbane does not control any trash.)

You should have little trouble getting through to Prince–just kill through the trash. Not a big deal. Don’t do what I did, though:

The ethereal trash, as you’re probably aware, should be pulled ONE AT A TIME. Otherwise I, being a squishy mage, will have to pay more repair bills. =P

I’ll assume you cleared trash up to Prince okay. Make sure you’re careful with the trash between Chess and Prince, they hit hard!

Okay, now for the important part–how to down Prince.

If, as you walk into the room where you fight him, you move down the right wall, there’ll eventually be a dark spot on the wall. You’ll want your tanks to tank him right about there, maybe a little closer to the door. It’ll be within healing and ranged DPS’s max range but keep the healers and DPS outside of Shadow Nova, while also providing easy access to a “safe” nook for melee DPS to hide in case they get Enfeebled.

Now, there are some dangers with this positioning. If an Infernal hits where the melee DPS is standing, said melee DPS will need to get out FAST in case they get enfeebled, get back where the ranged DPS and healers are. And then…well, they can throw shoes at Prince or something. Infernals hitting where Prince is being tanked will make things hard for heals especially during phase 2 as well.

As for where ranged DPS and heals need to be: there’s one place on the map that will prevent them from taking any damage at all. Even if an infernal drops right next to them, they won’t get hurt. It’s practically foolproof.

Yes, that is ON TOP of the pillar. If you have trouble getting up, stand next to the pillar, jump, then press the movement key that will move you to the pillar. I prefer standing in front of the pillar and using S to back up onto it.

You should be positioned here before the fight starts.

Since infernals deal ground-level damage only, you won’t have to worry about them, and Prince won’t be able to Shadow Nova you either since you’re at max range or near-max range.

Once you’ve got this set up, it’s pretty much a tank and spank, albeit a long one. Make sure you’ve got mana stuff up. I’m not gonna go into detail on mana conservation for other classes, but mages: MAKE SURE your Evocate is up and you have a Mana Emerald conjured, along with some super mana pots. Use them early and often. Try to keep your mana % in line with Prince’s health %–not a huge deal for us, since we can Evocate, but that’s a good way of thinking about it.

DPSers: Make sure your threat’s low enough when Prince hits phase 3 that you can just go all out, cause those axes hurt. You’ll want to pop your trinkets when he gets to phase TWO though, since the tank’s gonna be getting stomped during phase 2. Get through that as fast as you can. Mages, once you get late in phase two, wipe your threat if you still have Invisibility up, cause it’s tough to DPS effectively when you’re near the threat cap. Same goes for other classes that can do so (hunters->Feign Death and so forth). You just need to make sure you have a good cushion so phase 3 goes by quickly too.

So yeah. Got Prince, Netherspite, and Nightbane down–in that order. Only one death on Netherspite!

We pretty much own. Here we are in front of Nightbane. =) As you may note, Detlo didn’t quite make it into our picture, but you can still at least see his name. A bunch of caster stuff dropped, thankfully–Galistul got a couple upgrades, and I got rid of another blue in favor of the off hand from Nightbane.

Some great strategy help from Bento: despite a brand-new strategy he gave us on Prince (Comment this post if you’d like the strat, it’s quite good), along with directions and coordination on the 2 dragons (the Nightbane strat was excellent too!), his best advice was to Kythrine: “Okay, here’s the masterful strategy: strip naked and go play with Netherspite” after a wipe.

Of course, I can’t not mention his hilarious practical joke he played on Michelle after the run: as he was playing her toon, he took her toon to the tram between SW and IF, destroyed the hearthstone, stripped her naked, and left her there. =) It was very amusing, when she logged in especially.

I also got my next rank of the Violet Signet–only about 15k more rep till I get the top rank one!

Thinking about buying [Sunfury Signet] to get to Exalted with Scryers. Any suggestions?

As much as I love playing with Vel (especially after today!) I’m thinking about working a lot more on my druid healer. I love druid-style heals, and think it’d be fun to play him to 70. Advice from resto druids on how to play as well as advice from everyone about what to do is appreciated!

It’s so good to be back. I really missed everyone in the guild, and am happy to have returned. =)

I ran 3 heroics yesterday–finished them all, too. Think I got 12 badges, total, yesterday. Not only that, but I leveled my alt holy paladin, Syrenicus, to 23 — he’s in Neo Imperela now, along with my level 16 shadow priest, Daulan. Had a great time running WC for once–we had 4 people getting run through by Detlo. Was a good break after H-Mechanar too. Also started a 5’s team–my Evoker’s gear still doesn’t hold up, and we don’t have the best team synergy, but in a couple months I’ll have my S4 wand and gloves! =)

However,the best part of yesterday was definitely gearing up. I got 3 gear upgrades! In H-Mech, the robes dropped from the Cache of the Legion–surprisingly, an upgrade. In H-SP, Quagmirran’s Eye dropped, finally affording an upgrade from Vengeance of the Illidari (the Hellfire Peninsula trinket that I’ve had since 63). And in H-MgT (which was a great run–we had Spartackus, a T6-geared bear tank, as well as some of his T6 guildies come along) I got my Jaded Crystal Dagger! Combined with the Merciless helm I got from BG’s, my gear’s really starting to shape up. I’m only 39 badges away from the Corrupted Soulcloth Pantaloons too–should get some of them later today in Kara. I’d have them next week if I wasn’t going out of town. =( As it is, I’m still starting to get really well geared, and am a little closer to epic’ing out. =)

Downed Shade first try, only 1 death

He didn’t drop any caster gear (I haven’t seen any caster gear in any instance for 3 weeks)

Downed Illhoof, no sweat. We chose to just DPS down Illhoof and only have our offtank on his minion, which worked really well. Didn’t even have a death, after wiping on him *multiple* times last week.

Did chess event. First tiime I’d ever done it; wow, it’s really a lot of fun! Finished it first try.

On to Prince we went, rather confidently. First two tries were good (we kept ranged DPS by the door and ran behind that corner to the left of the door for Enfeebles), but I forgot to put my hit rating gear on. Oops. ^^’

I gotta admit, I really like the fight, despite its being so difficult. (1M health? That’s more than any other boss…justified, I know, but still, it was quite a shock at first!) We did excellently for going into the fight not having done it before as a guild.

Third try, we did rather well too, but were still wiping around 40-50%. And that’s where we stayed for the rest of the night.

Great job to all–Mymichelle, Zerlan, Fingan, Detlo, Wackko, Sinithos, Galistul, Nathanielle, Reanimator, Nightscraper, Raiseplz…went really well tonight

Oh, and it’s proven now–<Neo Imperela> is so leet that we can have out-of-combat wipes. Right after Illhoof, on the way to chess, we were pulling the Spell Shades out onto that wooden platform…right before we pulled, Nathanielle accidentally backed off the ledge, Mymichelle levitated into some trash mobs to try and rez him, and Zerlan jumped down/died/ankhed in order to rez. Good times.

I’m within 2 badges of my new trinket–Icon of the Silver Crescent–now, which is nice! Also ran 3 instances today (2 partially) in order to get my shiny new Kara key! Now I don’t have to wait for Raiseplz every week, lol.

I can’t do Kara next week, sadface…I gonna be out of town during most of the week. Good luck to our raid team.

Still working on the druids with Sinithos; we’re both at level 21 now, and doing really well. Working through Hillsbrad right now. I gotta admit, healing as a druid is really fun, and definitely offers more variety than paladin heals.

<Neo Imperela>’s first try at Maiden yields a 20% finish. We weren’t able to duplicate it, but we did a great job for a first try! Good luck to everyone tomorrow!

Got an enchant for Galistul too, so that’s nice. I’m hoping for some J/C designs soon; I’m too poor to purchase any. Looking at probably getting my epic cloak from badges tomorrow or Sunday–I need about 8 badges.

Ran H-MgT today with a pug–we did finish, grats to Hoofgar Bizarrobob Sylendar, and Tarpep for a nice run. Unfortunately my robe did not drop, so I have to do it again >.< Coulda used the mace from Kael but that didn’t drop either. I was on adds for the second boss, set up a macro to do it, and ended up popping a 7k+ (10k with ignite) fireball on the boss. Kinda nice. And a HUGE grats goes out to Bizarrobob for SOLOING Kael’thas from 20% to 0% to finish off the run.

I’m working on a montage video for Kara for <Neo Imperela>. I’ll post stuff here when I get it done.

Oh and it’s official, I was 3rd (I’m pretty sure!) on the Kara DPS charts tonight. YEE!!

Stormrage EU just unlocked the new Badge of Justice items. Tip: SHIFT+V to show the names of the friendly targets only and right-click the NPC`s name: Smith Hauthaa. It`s not that hard, even if the names keep moving on the screen.

The skins for the new items are terrible, especially for druids, the 3 pants (tanking, moonkin and healing) look the same, also same graphics as some item from Blade`s Edge Mountains, some blue quest reward, I don`t remember the name atm and cba to search.

For the moment I won`t choose any item, even tho I have 130 Badges of Justice, I`ll take some time to decide, I don`t want to waste Badges on something I might replace in a few days.

Before the list of Badge loot was released, I had been saving up my Badges of Justice for a Searing Sunblade. It costs 50 badges, which is no small feat for me to accumulate. Still, I finally got them… and then the patch was announced. The badges are now sitting there in my bank, waiting for me to decide what to do… spend or save?

So I broke out my trusty resources… the Rogue DPS Spreadsheet from the Elitist Jerks forums, and the Shadowpanther AEP database. Here are the items that I am considering:

* – the Belt or Tunic would break up my Primal Intent set and would cost me the +40 AP set bonus. The loss of that bonus is reflected in these figures.

Fascinating how the two resources don’t really agree. The Sunblade is one of the smallest upgrades according to MAEP, but one of the biggest by the DPS Spreadsheet. It goes to show how you can’t just depend on one resource.

The Blade of Serration and Trousers the two nicest items. The Trousers are likely a little better than the T6 Slayer’s Legguards that drop in Hyjal, and the Blade is on par with the Fang of Vashj. The Trousers are especially appealing since I am still wearing Fel Leather Leggings – one of the last blue items I own. However, they each come at twice the cost of the Swiftblade. For me, that means a long time of farming badges.

Also, it looks like the Swiftblade + Ring (total of 105 badges) will benefit me more than the Trousers (100 badges) or Blade of Serration (105 badges) would alone.

The impact of the Swiftblade on my dps is not because its such an incredible weapon (although it is pretty nice). It is because I am using a poor off-hand weapon right now. The Swiftblade is a major upgrade over what I have. The Guile of Khoraazi at speed 1.6 is not an ideal choice due to fewer Combat Potency procs. Even the Swiftblade is a little slower than I would have liked (1.5 speed). However you can’t argue with the 103 dps. While the other items are good, I already have Kara or badge level gear in those slots.

So, I guess am going to buy the Swiftblade when the patch hits and the vendors are opened up, and then start saving toward the ring. As for the trousers and main hand dagger… well I’ll probably get better green items on the first day after the expansion hits.

Badges of Justice, the new economy will be here soon. Pokemon… gotta catch ‘em all fever is nearly here. Patch 2.4 is coming soon, the download is already upon us all. So I ask ye of little hope, what benefits are you going to first grab up?

For the enhancement shaman, I wholeheartedly look forward to the the Vanir’s Right Fist of Brutality for a main-hand upgrade. Right?

Based on my little poor-man’s EJ calculations my current Dragonstrike main-hand weapon value for enhancement shamans is 970.1 EP. The Vanir’s Right Fist of Pwnage! is more than a tier upgrade at 1015.4 EP. Heck, the Big Bad Wolf’s Paw (834.6) to Decapitator (912.8) upgrade is 78.2 EP points. The Vanir’s Right Fist of Brutality (1015.4) vs. Dragonstrike (970.1) is a whopping 45 EP points. Ohh. That’s not too much of a change.

Ouch. I was hoping for more when cashing in my Badger tokens. 105 BoJ for a 45 EP upgrade. Hmmm. An upgrade is an upgrade, isn’t it?

Geez. That’s a lotta Badges. Lemme look at what else I can get (on the cheap) for enhancing the enhancement shaman.

What will be your first Badger purchases for Patch 2.4? Enquiring minds wanna know!

I have read a number of blogs and forum threads these past few weeks lamenting the fact that “casuals” will be able to get T6-level gear through Badge of Justice vendors.

Ridiculous.

I know its ridiculous because I am that casual player. I have one character at level 70, not four or six or more. I play most evenings but only for about two hours at a time. I have been in Karazhan many times, but I have never done a full clear. I am in a guild that has no chance of ever mustering 25 people to go to Gruul’s Lair. I play as much (or more) for the social aspects of the game as I do for the raids and loot. I would not jump to a progression guild because I don’t want to abandon the friends that I have in my current guild.

While there are all different types of “casual” players out there, I feel that I represent a fairly typical casual raiding WoW player.

And I have no chance of ever buying that Badge Gear.

The raiding elite seems to think that players like me are going to come up with enough Badges to deck ourselves out in the same type of gear that they have earned by grinding their way through Hyjal and Black Temple. Outrageous! It’s taken me over a month to accumulate 50 Badges for my Searing Sunblade. At 100 Badges for a chest piece and 105 Badges for a one-hand weapon, I have as much chance of getting those as I do of soloing Illidan.

Is that just me? Or is it the majority of casual players? WoWJutsu has catalogued 2.3 million US and European characters who have been in Karazhan, but that figure is inflated since it includes all toons in all Kara-running guilds, as well as alts, etc… Tobold used these numbers and estimated that less than 1/3 of the players in US and Europe have been in Kara, and far fewer have actually cleared it. If you’re not clearing Kara, you’re not likely to get enough Badges for a set of T6-level gear. One piece? Maybe. A whole set? No way.

So lighten up, raiding elite. I’m not going to crash your T6 party, and neither are the majority of players in the game. By the time I can amass enough Badges to buy even one of the new items, the expansion will come out and all pre-WotLK gear will be forgotten.

Everyone has heard the upcoming patch news, I am sure. There are many new Badge of Justice rewards waiting for us, some equivalent to T6 gear. The cost is high if you are not in a guild that clears Kara weekly. Since I’m not raiding right now, running heroics as often as I do right now (which is not that often), it would take me nearly two months to save up 100 Badges.

At the moment I almost have the 50 Badges I need to get my Searing Sunblade. I am faced with the big question. Do I buy the Sunblade, and start again at zero Badges? Or do I forego the Sunblade and keep those Badges as a start toward the new patch gear?

I have always been of the opinion that you get gear now because the improved stats will make it easier to get even better gear later. I had this debate with myself when I first started going into Karazhan – buy the Choker of Vile Intent now, or wait until the Worgen Claw Necklace drops from Attumen? For me, that was a no brainer – I bought the Choker. I figured that having the improved dps right at that time was the important thing. (note: it was a good choice, because the Worgen Claw Necklace has never dropped for my Kara group)

So I am leaning toward buying the Sunblade now, and hoping that my increased dps will help make it easier and faster to accumulate Badges in the future.

Agree? Disagree?

Besides – I’m not a gear freak. I like to play the game for fun, not to get top end gear. I don’t really care that much if I have T4, T6, or T25 gear as long as I am having fun each time I log on.

• Badges of Justice: Nalorakk drops only one, but all the others dropped two badges each.
• Flamecasters: spellstealing. Run speed + spell haste = mach 10 mage.
• Jan’alai’s entrance: is in an unintuitive location. You can see him from the center, but you have to go back to the front of the instance and climb over Nalorakk’s platform to get to him.
• Amani Scouts: will spawn every few minutes in the huts in front of Jan’alai’s pyramid. If you can kill them before they reach a drum (not hard as they don’t have much health) , you won’t have to deal with the two adds they call. Once you reach the first set of steps, you shouldn’t aggro scouts anymore.
• Aman’ishi Warbringers: non CCable. Tank them. They demount at 20%, so their bears must be dealt with as well.
• Aman’ishi Bears: Vulnerable to Poly, trap, fear. They can be sheeped. If you choose to tank them, drag them away from each other as their debuff Armor Crunch (=25% armor) stacks. Keep an eye on the bear riders, who dismount at 20%. Not to be underestimated. Be ready to grab the mounts when the trolls dismount at 20%. Tank them at opposite corners of the platform to avoid the stacking debuff.
• Aman’ishi Tribesman: Vulnerable to Poly, mind control.
• Aman’ishi Medicine Man: Vulnerable to Polymorph, Snares, most CCs. Spawns an Invulnerability totem which makes nearby mobs invulnerable. So, it’s a good idea to kill this mob first in a pack, and kill the totem fast.
• Aman’ishi Guardians: Come in pairs. Non-CCable. Bring non-elite adds with them.
• Aman’ishi Savages: can be solo: AOEd by a mage etc.
• Aman’ishi Axe Thrower: Sap, Sheep, Fear
• Jan’alai’s Dragonhawk Hatchlings: are much weaker expected. A coordinated group should be able to take a dozen or so down.
• Amani Guardians dispel Crowd Controls such as Polymorph, so it’s crucial to keep reapplying the CC or tank the mobs further away.
• Sacrifice Timer: Once you talk to Harrison Jones to start the event, you’ll get a 20-minute sacrifice timer. Kill the bear boss within the timer, then you receive a chest containing an additional Badge of Justice & another piece of loot. Each kill within a timer gives you bonus time to get to the next boss plus whatever time you had remaining. The timers and bonus loot chests only exist for the four animal bosses, and if you go over the time limit on one boss, that’s it for that raid ID.
• Akil’zon’s Gauntlet: Update (Nov. 27, 2007 ) recently a hotfix was applied and now…. the Amani’shi Lookout will break sap and not able to be incapacitated once you cross a certain point. You can still sap him for the 5 seconds that it gives you. So….

Exploit to get past the guantlet: when you start up the ramp towards Akil’zon’s area, have a hunter go behind your party and wait for the mobs that come up behind the party. Have the Hunter distance himself from the main party & attack the mobs that come up behind you. The Hunter can then Feign Death after engaging the mobs behind the raid group, and the mobs will reset! They will not continue to come up behind the raid party while you ascend up the hills towards Akil’zon! How nice indeed. If you don’t have a hunter, a rogue can play this part as well. Have the rogue hang back, blind one of the mobs, then vanish. Easy as pie!

• Budd Nedreck in Hatchet Hills, where you can also find the ZA flight point, repair dude, and reagent vendor. He’ll give you a quest to retrieve a map from Nalorakk, which will give you a free 20-slot bag and open up two more quests.

Trash is simple. CC the casters tank and spank the melee. Note that most humanoid mobs can be MCed so if you’re short on CC that is an alternative. The boss himself is simple, two tanks stacked on top of each other to split his cleave, melee behind, ranged somewhere else. Nalorakk charges around but doesn’t hit hard. Every now and then he will switch forms, other tank taunts, then tank’n spank. He switches back and the first tank needs to taunt back.

Patch 2.3 taunt changes make this fight very non-random. The DoTs on the bear form can get pretty painful on the tank so look out for that. In human form he’s not really a big issue (druid tank for human, War/Pal tank for bear). A Blessing of Protection can replace a taunt if required. Cast it on one tank and the boss will switch to the other. A Blessing of Protection will also remove Mangle, although this should never be required unless mistakes are made.

The encounter is resettable. If a tank dies, RUN.

And, if you are lucky and have a group skilled and geared and able to…. a bear mount can drop on the 20 minute timed quest.

The trash is numerous, unintuitive, and annoying. The ambush mechanic is surprising if you didn’t read a guide and fun for the first pull, but then it becomes annoying, and soon it just becomes extra pulls to waste time for your timed attack quest.

The boss itself is straight forward. If you have a decently geared feral druid tank (our feral tank was 2 T5) the boss damage is mostly manageable. You do need another person with high armor values to help soak up the saber lashes & tank the lynx spirit when the boss splits. This person is more important that your MT because the #1 accident that result in wiping is probably when the boss splits every 25%, the off-tank fails at grabbing the spirit and it proceeds to waste your healers. If that is a problem, try having your main tank spam AE skills (cleave, swipe, consecration, whatever) to grab the lynx as it splits so that your off-tank has a little time to pick it up.

Healer assignment should be 2 on MT and 1 on OT who also does raid healing. The saber lash CD is really quick and he can do 2 saber lashes in quick succession which can kill your OT if he isn’t well geared enough and you healer didn’t land one heal on the OT. During the split phase the two MT healers can split to heal both tanks because the damage on the tanks is relatively low whilst the raid damage taken ranks up here with all the shocks flying around so your raid healer will need to be on the ball. People were spread out to avoid the chain lightning totem so chain heal was too slow and ineffective (unless melee was getting hit). Your DPS will need to help kill totems quickly or else raid damage will become unmanageable in this phase. Otherwise, this boss only requires a little practice and is more of a gear check rather than skill check.

Depending on your raid setup this can get a bit annoying. Seriously, he’s so random that the fight can either be relatively easy (depending on if you can deal with spirit bolts) to extremely hard, depending on the random adds, which people he decides to power drain, and your raid setup.

We had the following adds: Ogre, Snake, Elemental, Undead. We started off trying to perma-sheep the ogre and shackle the undead while we slept the snake and kill the elemental, then killed the snake thereafter. For some reason the ogre was breaking sheep frequently and therefore after killing the elemental (we didn’t have a warlock) we killed the ogre and the mage would then sheep the snake so the druid can be freed to continue healing. Sheep on the snake and shackle on the undead was relatively stable.

Spirit bolts is the ability that is always here and also the sole ability that will wipe your raid. Basically he spits out an area wide AE per second that hits for 300 a tick (mitigated by shadow resist but increased by his stacking power drain). The problem with this ability is casting push-back. Even with 75% push-back resistance, casting is barely possible in the 15 seconds this happens. Therefore depending on your healer setup this can mean an automatic wipe. Luckily, we had a CoH priest and a resto druid which can heal relatively well during spirit bolts note that spirit bolts do not cause the earth shield to heal you AT ALL. Ended up with 6 stacking power drains (+60% damage) and the spirit bolt phase got very messy on the try we killed the boss.

The third ability is another random … the class drain ability. We had two priests and one try he decided to drain either priest two times in a row and two members of the team perma-MCed was just unmanageable. You’ll need a rogue to keep wound poison on him or warrior to keep the MS debuff on him because his heals are non-trivial & according to raid member’s report is also uninterruptible. You should purge or have a mage spell steal (best choice) his life-bloom if he drains your druid. If he drains a shaman his heal seemed to be un-interruptible, but the chain lightning can be kicked and the totem only has 1 hp. We didn’t have Paladins or Warlocks to see the crazy consecration and rain of fire. He’s laughable during rogue phase (dispell the wound poison) and is manageable in warrior (he has MS so be careful).

All in all this fight is very challenging and depending on the combination of the insane amount of random factors in this fight he can become impossible.

The trash here is actually more challenging than the boss itself. It’s gauntlet style like Shattered Halls: 4 sets of 2 elites (windwalkers) on the road, every now and then non-elite eagles spawn from ahead and 2 elite reinforcements spawn from behind. Have a tank grab both windwalkers, kill them fast then move on to the next windwalkers, you don’t want to stay in the same spot for long. Reinforcements don’t hit for hard so just have another tank grab those and the eagles, AE down the eagles every 1-2 packs. Once you pull the tempest guy at the end spawns stop. I’m not sure if the gauntlet is supposed to respawn or not but we’ve cleared it once, it bugged out on us and spawned as we pulled the boss. We recleared the gauntlet, then after we wiped to the boss it didn’t re-spawn again.

Boss was simple enough once we got our strat down. Our strategy is as follows: 2 markers are placed on 2 ranged (ideally 2 people with better awareness and playskill), have them stand in separate spots and assign the ranged to be split into 2 groups and stacked on top of either marker (3-4 per stack) the two ranged groups stands in a “triangle” formation with the melee, 20 yards apart, that way only 3-4 people are hit by the lightning ball at the same time, nothing chain heal can’t remedy. A hunter and mage were assigned to kill the birds in the sky. The triangle formation makes it really easy to see where the storm is forming and everyone can easily run to the spot without many mistakes. The boss will run into the group so the two people with markers will have to reposition themselves and the people assigned to the markers will have to follow. If everyone can get that routine this boss is easy.

Fun. I’m sure there’s a way of skipping all the trash by abusing his mini-game ability. The trash packs are relatively easy but for the scout mechanic. Managed to be killing 10 or so mobs at the same time just because of these scouts. What happens is that you’ll notice there are drums around the area and scouts patrolling the vicinity. If they aggro they will run straight for a drum, if they get one (yes one) successful bang on the drum 2 elites will spawn. They can be rooted, stunned, and slowed (at least via frost shock) and only have 6k HP so kill them before they reach a drum. They will spawn behind you so rogues & druids need to be aware and react accordingly. Note that they will run STRAIGHT for the drums, so becareful when there are pulls with scouts.

Boss has 3 abilities: flamebreath, the mini-game, and hatcher spawn. Flame breath is a narrow but long cone AE, just make sure ppl don’t stand on the same straight line with the boss, especially behind the tank. The mini-game he will close the 4 “exits”, then start throwing balls of fire on the ground. After a few secs they all explode and you’ll take 5-7k damage per exploding ball that hits you. You have plenty of free time to find the free space (there is plenty of room) to stand. The explosion is slightly bigger than the ball graphic so don’t risk it and find somewhere where there is actually some room between you and any ball.

Every now and then two hatchers will spawn, and run to the two extensions on the altar to hatch eggs. There are 18-19 eggs on eggs on each platform. Each hatcher will run to either platform and start hatching eggs, each time they cast hatching they will hatch one more until they are killed (1 egg first cast, 2 eggs 2nd, 3 eggs 3rd, etc). Our strat was to have our druid charge and stun kill one, and let the other hatch 10 eggs (4 casts), stun and kill him, then deal with the adds. You may need to adjust according to your raid set up how many eggs you can handle at a time (10 was ok for us with only 1 mage AE). Occasionally the add spawn will overlap his fireballing mini-game and ranged will need to react and kill the hatchers from inside the game area before they spawn too much and wipe your raid. The boss has a 5 minute enrage timer and a 10 minute berserk (wipe) timer. After enrage he does hit quite hard on the tank so healers need to be aware of that.

The two elements of this fight which must be emphasised to the raid are the flame bombs and the hatchers. When he teleports the raid into the center (every 30 seconds), everyone must move to a safe spot so they don’t get blown up. When the hatchers spawn, DPS should quickly dispatch one of them and DPS down the other to 20% or so.

At 35% he’ll hatch all unhatched eggs, so you want to be cleared or near clear both egg platforms (3-4 add spawns if you hatch 10 at a time). You’ll only be left with his mini-game and dragon breath to deal with. His dragon breath has a long cooldown and as long as people are topped off and nobody get hit by a fireball in the mini-game, this boss is fun and easy.

You can reset this boss by running off the platform (unless the mini-game is in progress), but make sure you run off the correct side because the stairs are broken behind the boss and you need to run all the way around to get back to the boss.
