Es curioso comprobar que en las películas más premiadas del cine, la banda sonora siempre esta presente entre los diferentes galardones. Y es que la música caracteriza a cada uno de los elementos de la película y sin ella no significaría lo mismo.

LO QUE EL VIENTO SE LLEVO
No se si sería el viento o la lluvia, pero el caso que esta película lo que se llevo fue diez Oscars de la Academia de catorce nominaciones a las que optava. La composición de Max Steiner para “Lo que el viento se llevo” fue nominada a la mejor música original, pero desgraciadamente ese año “El mago de Oz” se llevo la palma en esta categoría.

BEN – HUR
Esta película conquisto once Oscars de doce nominaciones, superando el record de “Los mejores años de nuestra vida” con ocho estatuillas de nueve. Entre los Oscars obtenidos, Miklos Rozsa, fue premiado por la mejor música original de Ben Hur. Pero también le concedieron en el mismo año un premio BAFTA y un Globo de Oro por mejor película dramática y de aventuras. ¡Desde luego supero todas las espectativas!

WEST SIDE STORY
La adaptación cinematográfica de la historia de “Romeo y Julieta” de William Shakespeare consiguió nada mas y nada menos que diez Oscars de once nominaciones. Saul Chaplin, Johnny Green, Sid Ramin, Irwin Kostal fueron los responsables de la estatuilla por la mejor banda sonora en una película musical. Los Globos de Oro también quisieron premiar a West Side Story con un globo a la mejor película: musical. Esta película alcanzó tal éxito que aun sus melodías se recuerdan hoy en día en teatros de todo el mundo.

CABARET
Se conoce que West Side Story abrió las puertas del éxito para películas de género musical como “Cabaret”. Basada en la novela “Adiós a Berlín” de Christopher Isherwood, fue ganadora de ocho de diez nominaciones por parte de la Academia, un Globo de Oro y un BAFTA por mejor película de género musical.

EL ÚLTIMO EMPERADOR
Basada en la autobiografía de Aisin-Gioro Pu Yi, siguió los pasos de “Gigi” (1958) e hizo pleno en todas las quinielas de los Oscars, ya que ganó en las nueve categorías en las que estaba nominada. Además consiguió 4 Globos de Oro y un BAFTA.

TITANIC
La verdad que la gran producción de James Cameron, basada en el desastre del transatlántico RMS Titanic, no se fue a pique como el barco, sino que se convirtió en una de las películas más taquilleras y más premiadas de la historia del cine. Once estatuillas de catorce, cuatro Globos de Oro, diez nominaciones en los premios BAFTA y un premio SAG.

EL SEÑOR DE LOS ANILLOS: EL RETORNO DEL REY
Se dice que a la tercera va la vencida, y justo haciendo honor al título, han retornado como reyes para conquistar once estatuillas de once nominaciones. Además le concedieron cuatro Globos de Oro y dos Grammy, entre otros. De este modo la tercera saga de la triología de “El señor de los anillos”, sigue siendo junto a “Titanic” y a “Ben-Hur” las más premiadas de la historia de los Oscars.

Man oh man I been busy. This is national novel writing month. The idea is to write about 1500 words a day, without thinking about it too much and see what you get at the end of the month. The idea is you’ll have a first draft of a novel that is at least 50.000 words. Nanowrimo link.

I started writing late in the month so I have had to average high-about 3,000 words a day to get to where I am now which is 35,000. It’s been fun and I’m pleased with what I have written. It’s  Mid grade story and Freddie, the hero has just escaped the giant spider and the evil princess.

Steve Martin said the subconscious mind is the writer the conscious mind the editor. This process of writing in a month with out planning or editing is all subconscious work. It’s great to be able to work in this free wheeling kind of way. Two pals have also taken the challenge. One of them is buzzing with life, kinda energized by the experience. When I was most focused on the novel, last week, I was writting from somewhere ‘deep’ with in and that night I had the MOST trippy visual dreams, reflecting what I had been writing. It was fab. At one point there was knock on the door. “Whose there?” I asked.” Meisner”, a man replied. (actors will get it)

But I have still been getting on with my Hollywood lifestyle!! Last week I went to the Britannia awards, Bafta’s given to Americans. It was a super star studded event. I brushed shoulders with some huge Hollywood animals, the biggest shouldered of whom was the Governator himself Arnie. He can’t talk proper, he mumbled on about park benches or something, said Kirk Douglas was his entire inspiration and grinned those big gnashers of his. But imagine that, without Kirk there’d have been no Arnie, then no body building, then no gyms and we’d all be fat. Arnie then handed a life time achievement award to screen legend Kirk Douglas. Despite his stroke Kirk ran onto the stage. He told us all a lovely story about how he and Burt Lancaster had performed to the Queen in the London Paladium. He then sung “Maybe it’s because I’m a Londoner.” And fairly scooted off the stage again! He is 92 but still a super star.

A whole bunch of other stars got awards but I can’t be bothered mentioning them becos they weren’t in the wild. They were indoors which I feel is less celebrity safari and more celebrity safari park. However Ben Stiller did take the piss out of Robert De Niro in a very funny speech (He took all the credit for De Niro’s career) then gave him another very important Bafta. Bob was cool as can be. He took the mick out of british theatrical lovies and retold his Travis Bickle lines from the Taxi Driver in a Sir John Geilgud voice “I say sir. Are you looking at me sir? I mean I wonder very much are you looking at me sir?”

Talking of Geilgud, god bless his thespian soul, I went to a really good production of Harold Pinters play “No mans Land” at the Odyssey theatre. Geilgud was one of the original cast, with Ralph Richardson (Oh I miss those chaps so!) Everyone was good but the lead, Alan Mundell was world class. The play is wonderfully from the subconscious. It is about success, the lack of it and the price of the two! Mandell has a wonderful monologue where he begs a character to change his life. See the play if you can. Mandell is Beckett scholar and worked with the man. Below is a link of his performance in the original version of ‘The endgame’ he is the guy in the bin.

Also congratulations to my good buddy KJ Miller whose film ‘Nobody the great‘ ( a comedy about 2 posho brits who mistake the Gasman for a terrorsist) won the Bel Air Film Festival audience award.

If there ever was a time for me to decide, now would be it. Crying shame though that I can’t make up my mind about this nude/black overlay Valentino dress that Freida wore to the 18th Annual BAFTA Awards. Sure, it’s a frothy, sweet, girly confection but she’s been sticking to black a lot lately that I’d have liked to see more color. Should she have chosen the nude version instead from Valentino? No, absolutely not since it would have washed her out. Sure the shoes are sky-high and delectable but being a petite chica, she should have worn non-ankle straps instead so her leg line wasn’t cut off. So on the fence I sit on Freida’s attire. On Dev’s, he’s wearing his usual suit and skinny tie *yawn* but at least he looks scrubbed up; now if only he’d get a haircut. Overall, I’m not thrilled with this outing of the FreDev.

Exclusive: Jeremy Irons to star in new film about St Columba

OSCAR winner Jeremy Irons is to star in a major new movie about the saint who brought Christianity to Scotland.

The film on the life of St Columba by Shadowlands director Norman Stone will be shot either in Northern Ireland or the west of Scotland.

Producers are also in talks with another A-list Hollywood star said to be interested in the project – but Jeremy is already signed up to play the saint, who came to Scotland from Ireland.

Bafta-winner Stone, whose films include Florence Nightingale and CS Lewis – Beyond Narnia, said: “Jeremy is perfect for the role. He is fascinated by Columba, especially given his Irish ancestry and connections.

“He just can’t wait to get started. This will be a wartsand-all portrayal.

“I see Columba as a man of incredible faith, integrity and strength – but at times flawed.

“He struggled with hunger for power. He was cunning, brave and an independent spirit which sometimes he found difficult to fit into his holy orders.

“But he was a gifted man who changed the religious and social map of Scotland and Britain.

“He was not a saintly saint and this film will be more of a character study and a political thriller than a Christian epic.

“Columba will not wear a halo. It needs big-screen treatment and in Jeremy we have the right person to deliver the performance we are looking for.”

The movie, The End Time, will be shot either in the spring or autumn of next year, with screening six months later.

Jeremy, who won an Academy Award for Best Actor for Reversal Of Fortune in 1990, worked with Stone on BBC drama The Dream in 1993.

A source close to the actor said: “He is delighted to be involved and looking forward to working with Norman.”

Columba arrived in Scotland from Ireland and established a monastery on the island of Iona in 563AD.

He began converting the pagan Scots to Christianity and built several churches across the Outer Hebrides before his death at the age of 75. He is buried in Iona Abbey.

Another mass update of AnimNation news since the summer…and it has been an exciting few months!

Firstly, the CBeebies Big & Small online interactive game that I created the 3D environments for has been nominated for a Children’s Interactive BAFTA!

AnimNation have also moved into a shiney new studio in the heart of Brighton’s North Laines – more space, better facilities – the company is now more equipped to take on bigger projects.

Last weekend, the White Night festival took over Brighton for one night. I was one of the main organisers for the Brighton Animators animated projections event. I helped to put together a night of futuristic projected animations onto the very distinct Brighton Unitarian Church. 42 purpose made animations were chosen to be projected onto the church. The whole event received wonderful feedback from the audience & press. I created two animations for the event – a B-movie inspired opening animation to introduce the evening & a 3D animation of a Robot hiding out in the church from the police. Over the past few months AnimNation have created work for Nokia and Punch & Judy prof. Glyn Edwards, as well as developing three new children’s television series – more information on that to come!

And the run up to Christmas looks equally as exciting – with a whole host of exciting animation projects, working with big name clients.

Sorry for the irregular post but the demands of trying to sort out a new house at the same time as mapping out the future doesn’t leave time for the luxuries of routine.

Below I post my final TV review that appeared in The Leader on Friday, focussing on Harry Hill’s TV Burp. I was asked to write about this programme without referencing a specific edition, hence the generalisations and focus on repeated themes.

Childish, silly and immature are three adjectives that suitably describe Harry Hill’s TV Burp but somehow this unique comedian fuses these undeniable traits into a surreal masterpiece that never fails to make me cry with laughter.

This BAFTA award-winning show is suitable for the entire family due to Hill’s refusal to rely on swear words or smut. Instead, you only have to look at this bizarre character and you’ll find yourself smiling before he even shares his observations of the week’s TV. Hill fills the screen with his shiny bald head, thick black glasses, smart black blazer and a comically oversized shirt collar. You’d never guess that this funnyman, real name Dr Matthew Keith Hall, used to be in the medical profession.

Hill usually focuses on popular programmes that we’ve probably all watched during the week – such as Coronation Street or X-Factor – without detecting the humour that he expertly extracts from even the most mundane scene. Part of our joy comes from the fact that Hill, and his team of writers, pick up on things we miss and reinterprets them in a way that only a truly talented funnyman could. I now find myself watching television while trying to second guess what will feature on TV Burp, without much success.

There are many recurring elements to the show, such as the pre-advertisement ‘fight’ sequence between two people or inanimate objects, which have appeared in a featured comedy review, to find out which is best. Meanwhile, the sarcastic TV Highlight of the Week segment focuses on a particularly pointless piece of programming that underlines the increasing vacuous nature of images and dialogue that fill our screen, something that TV Burp exploits with great success.  At the end of every show, one of the micro-celebrities referenced in the show makes a guest appearance to sing a song. It is old-fashioned variety given a bizarrely modern day twist and it works.

Life is stressful for us all, even at the best of times, but spending Saturday teatime in the company of this former medic proves that laughter really is the best medicine.

BRIGHTON ROCK STARTS SHOOTING October 18 2009: principal photography starts today on Rowan Joffe’s debut feature BRIGHTON ROCK, starring a remarkable cast including Sam Riley (Control) as Pinkie, the fast-rising Andrea Riseborough (Happy Go Lucky and a BAFTA nominee for the eponymous role in Margaret Thatcher: the Long Walk to Finchley) as Rose, Oscar winner Helen Mirren (The Queen, Gosford Park) as Ida and John Hurt (1984, Hellboy II, The Proposition) as Phil Corkery. The eight week shoot will take place in Brighton, Eastbourne and on locations in and around London. Produced by award-winning producer Paul Webster (Atonement, Pride and Prejudice, Eastern Promises) for Kudos Pictures, BRIGHTON ROCK marks the first major production investment by Optimum Releasing, and will be made in association with BBC Films and the UK Film Council’s Premiere Fund. The film has also been supported by the UK Film Council’s Development Fund through Optimum Releasing and StudioCanal. International sales will be handled by StudioCanal, with Optimum set to release the film in the UK, StudioCanal in France and in Germany through Kinowelt. A love story between a murderer and a witness, can Pinkie trust Rose or should he kill her before she talks to the police? Can Rose trust Pinkie or is she next in line? The Sixties was the era of the great British gangster, the kind of working class hero that the frightened and ambitious Pinkie longs to be. It was also the last year in which the death penalty was actively carried out, the threat of hanging being a crucial motivation in Pinkie’s desperate attempts to get rid of witnesses to his revenge killing. “We’re making Brighton Rock as contemporary as we possibly can because the story feels ‘modern’. It’s too alive, too vibrant and too relevant to be contained in the late thirties, “says Rowan Joffe. “ Any form of adaptation is corruption. And Greene – who lovingly and pragmatically corrupted much of his own work to fit the big screen – would have been the first to understand that.” Producer Paul Webster said, “Rowan has written a formidable script that has attracted a cast that is a perfect blend of youth and experience. The scene is set to make a truly great British gangster film.”

Atom Egoyan to deliver BAFTA’s annual David Lean Lecture

At 7:45pm on Friday 23 October, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts will welcome multi award-winning writer/director Atom Egoyan to BAFTA HQ for the Academy’s annual film industry address.

Over the course of three decades at the forefront of the international film industry, Atom Egoyan has become one of cinema’s most celebrated writer/directors. With feature films including Speaking Parts, The Adjuster, Calendar, Exotica, The Sweet Hereafter, Felicia’s Journey, Ararat, Where the Truth Lies and 2008’s Adoration, Egoyan has garnered countless prizes and nominations, led by Grand Prix and International Critics Awards from the Cannes Film Festival and two Oscar® nominations for The Sweet Hereafter.

Egoyan’s Chloe gets its UK premiere at The Times BFI 53^rd London Film Festival this month and will be released in the UK by Optimum Releasing in 2010.

BAFTA’s Film Committee Chairman, Finola Dwyer, says: “It is a tremendous honour to have Atom Egoyan join us for the David Lean Lecture, one of the most important evenings in the BAFTA calendar which gives insight and access to some of the best minds and talents in the film industry. A true renaissance man, he directs independent films, theatre and opera, has held a teaching post as Dean’s Distinguished Visitor at the University of Toronto, and also writes on cinema and plays music. Atom is a wonderful ambassador for the Lecture; he has a unique and distinctive voice and is one of the most remarkable figures of contemporary independent filmmaking.”

Now in its 9^th year, the Academy’s annual David Lean Lecture is generously funded by The David Lean Foundation. This film lecture series is designed to educate, inform and inspire practitioners by providing insight into the experiences of some of the world’s best and most compelling filmmakers and to provide a forum for further discussion of their outstanding creative achievements.

The lecture series also serves to carry on the legacy of the great director David Lean, one of the founders of the British Film Academy (as it was then known) in 1947 and a continuing inspiration to many through his exceptional body of work.

The Monty Python team is to receive a British Film and Television Arts special award to mark their contribution to film and television at their 40th anniversary reunion event in New York.

The Special Award will be presented at an event co-hosted by BAFTA and IFC (Independent Film Channel) to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the creation of Monty Python. John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin will all be in attendance.

The Academy last honoured the Monty Python team in 1987 when they were presented with the Michael Balcon Award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema.

Montagem revolucionária recebe prêmio do Bafta

O grupo de humor que embalou risadas de diferentes gerações comemora hoje, em Nova York, 40 anos de existência com direito a um prêmio concedido pelo Bafta (a academia cinematografica britânica) por sua contribuição ao cinema e à televisão.

A festa irá marcar o lançamento  do documentário “Monty Python: Almost the Truth”,   dirigido por Alan Parker e que será exibido no canal a cabo IFC. Prato cheio para os fãs,  contará detalhes curiosos da vida dos integrantes desde sua estreia.

Essa é a segunda vez que Monty Phyton recebe uma homenagem. A primeira foi concedida em 1987.

O pessoal do Monty Python, lendária trupe britânica de humor, se reúne hoje em Nova York para celebrar os 40 anos de criação do grupo e receber um prêmio da Bafta, academia cinematográfica britânica.  Na ocasião, será lançado o documentário Monty Python: Quase a verdade (a versão do advogado). Pra quem não conhece vale a pena dar uma olhada no videozinho abaixo:

Este programa recien estrenado en MTV latinoamerica es el tipico drama adolescente pero en Inglaterra, con los mismos estereotipos de series como The O.C. o la infinidad de “opciones” que surgieron a finales de los 90′ y principios del 2000, con la diferencia de que las cosas se tratan de una manera menos superficial y tirandole a una especie de reality pero con guion. La serie lleva 4 temporadas, a partir de la tercera se cambio completamente al elenco, para mantener el interes y la frescura del mismo. Esta es sin duda una buena serie (de lo poco rescatable del canal) si pueden echenle un ojo a estas “pieles” XD

We are very excited to have actress Madeline Zima (Showtime :Californication and Network :Heroes) wearing SINGLE to he HBO Emmy suite
(with cast of Dexter) and her sister at the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Emmy party. Madeline also wore a red SINGLE strapless dress to her birthday party but no photos were allowed due to celebrity attendance.

Sixth time’s the charm for Kate Winslet – Perennial Oscar contender finally nabs a statue

Five-time Oscar bridesmaid Kate Winslet must have caught the bouquet when Helen Mirren flung it over her shoulder, because she finally got her turn at the altar this year.

Winslet is too young for her Academy Award to feel overdue, but with a total of six nominations by the tender age of 33, not to mention having co-starred in the biggest box office hit in history, the perennial contender’s career momentum and daring choices finally registered with Academy voters.

Yet winning the 2008 actress Oscar for “The Reader” wasn’t part of the plan. When she agreed to replace the pregnant Nicole Kidman in the role of Hanna Schmitz, it was on the understanding that filmmaker Stephen Daldry couldn’t possibly have his film ready for release until 2009, when “Revolutionary Road,” directed by her husband, Sam Mendes, was expected to be a heavy awards season favorite.

Schmitz was a new kind of role for Winslet, a woman old enough to have a past. Ever since her debut at 17 in “Heavenly Creatures,” Winslet has excelled at playing emotionally vulnerable young women. Her triumph with Schmitz was to peel back the tough skin and reveal the immature girl she used to be. Winslet does emotional nakedness like nobody else, often expressed through actual nudity. “I’m the kind of actress that absolutely believes in exposing myself,” she has said.

Her choice of roles is led by passion rather than career calculation. Now that she has an Oscar, she’s likely to be even more liberated. Who else would follow an Oscar by signing up for an HBO miniseries, “Mildred Pierce,” just as she followed “Titanic” with several small indie pics?

“There are so many emotions to play with when you’re playing somebody who’s difficult and complex and emotionally strung out and confused,” she told Variety in 2007, the year she won BAFTA’s Britannia Award for British actor of the year. “It just makes the job more exciting and challenging. I’m drawn to challenge really.”

Picture the scene. It’s Sunday afternoon. I’m very tired, slightly hungover, browsing the internet for things to keep me amused while I should be doing freelance work. All of a sudden, through a series of successive links on Youtube, I come across this video – ‘Fandango’ by the then Bajofondo Tango Club (now shortened to just Bajofondo), taken from their 2004 album ‘Supervielle’:

How nice was that? Having done a little bit of research (and by research I mean looked them up on Wikipedia and consulted their Myspace page) I can exclusively reveal to you that Bajofondo is a Uruguayan-Argentinian collective of extremely talented musicians, headed up by Gustavo Santaolalla, a two-time Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe and Grammy award-winner. Composer for Ang Lee’s critically acclaimed 2005 film, Brokeback Mountain, as well as 2000’s Amores Perros, a slightly less well-known film but worthy of mention purely because I love it, Santaolalla’s credentials speak for themselves.

If you can get hold of ‘Supervielle’, and you clearly can because I’ve just given you the link to buy it on Amazon, do; the album sits in a beautifully evocative middle-ground between Latin-infused classical, trip hop, drum ‘n’ bass… if only I’d have discovered this three or four months ago, it would have been the perfect backing track to my summer.

Or, indeed, some overdue freelance work…

Dana Delany looks nice in her black strapless dress and high heels. She seldom disappoints in her choice of stylish outfits. Ever since she found herself on Desperate Housewives she has made great attempts at looking both sexy and elegant. She tends to make good choices in fashion and she has a nice body to display it on. She has nice gams and has been wearing some nice high heels of late. I’m a fan.

It’s been a busy busy time in Katieville recently. I’ve had to make lots of decisions with regards to what I actually want to be doing and what work goes where and who sees what. All those annoying (potential) big decisions that seem the biggest you need to clamber over but once it’s done the deed is indeed done and then you realise you were being an overly dramatic mopey walrus (just me huh?).

So I decided to send the second play* I wrote for the Invitation Only group whilst at the Royal Court ahead to Simon Stephens in prep for the Arvon course in November. It was a tough call as it was either make one theatre script super duper worked on and shiny or choose the lesser worked on and newer project and then have the end result being two shiny projects to work from. So I opted for the latter choice which should be good as I’ve not even looked at that script since I handed it in earlier this year. Reignite the passion is the plan and what better way to do it with Simon Stephen’s guidance.

*I realise it would make sense if I actually called them by their names. First play is called, “Thursday’s Child” and second play is called, “Within Grasp”.

The dangling (first) script* from the Introduction Group is one that keeps pestering me to rewrite the next draft but I really can’t be bothered. I have no motivation for it at present and I keep getting annoyed at this factoid. So much so that I’ve hastily sent it to someone who wanted to read the next draft just so I could wash my hands of it for a while. I haven’t been stupid enough to send them a draft they’ve already read, I’ve sent them the fuller textured third draft although I was planning on sending them the fourth. Meh. Sometimes I am a tad impatient. But if it gives me a clearer head for a while and I don’t feel too guilty for not working on it then it can only be good.

I’ve been on a roll recently with short story submissions here, there and everywhere and when they’re up and ready to be perused I will submit the links on this very blog. I also recently did a guest stint over at Lucy Vee’s blog which be here. Lucy’s blog is rammed with information on reading, writing and more importantly is a healthy scriptual kick up the arse as to what you should be doing. She’s a Lady with a keen eye to help you with your script and comes with added humour and not at a very large price either (for reading your script that is).

Workshops have started for “The Yellow Wallpaper” and as ever these kids are fantastic. Unfortunately because it’s that time of year where they go off to uni to begin their further education of late nights, lack of proper stationery and alcohol the two excellent guinea pigs won’t be able to be involved in the final project. They were bloody marvellous and I wish I could develop the piece more with them but we also have two bloody fantastic stand-ins to step up the game and see the piece to fruition. Since I’ve started this out-of-the-blue adaptation route it’s been interesting. To take the structure and layer your own neatly cut pieces to make a new shiny colourful beast is a great feeling. And I love the collaborative side of a project like this; when you’re on a roll and you all share the same vision. It’s fantastic when the eyes light up and you all realise you’re thinking the same thing. Brilliant, I cannot wait to really get my hands dirty.

I will be doing so after I’ve whipped up another script of mine I haven’t touched for a while for the Rocliffe New Writing Forum at BAFTA. I made myself re-read my script and can admit I’ve fallen back in love with it and instantly knew which bits needed to be culled and reshaped. It was like sticking two fingers (and a fucking big knife) up to the person who basically defecated on my script and said some vile irritating things about my work. This wasn’t a case of me not handling feedback well (anyone who knows me will agree) this person said some rather unwarranted and holy inappropriate comments and made me angry for at least a week. I still can’t hold a proper conversation with them but I’m proud of this script and his comments are slowly being erased from my mind.

And to top it all off my script that I’d completely forgotten about in the BSSC competition made it through the beatings to make the first round. Let’s see if I can beat my personal best this year.

There’s plenty more to babble about but I’m well hungry and gasping for a cup of tea. Really I want a red wine but I have none. Really I should have done this as a videoblog so you didn’t have to read this much. But it’s cold and I would have looked like I was desperate for red wine.
