Aren’t back pains reserved for people like over the age of thirty…? If so, then I feel old. Today I had too carry home three textbooks, three binders, and like 4 regular books. I felt like I was carrying cement on my back. Totally not fun. When I put my backpack down in my car, before climbing on, I saw a distinct shift of the car bouncing on it’s shocks. How sad, my bag is so heavy it can move my car up and down.

Currently: Math Homework. I got sixty on the last test. I seriously need like an 70 – 80 on the next test or I’m screwed for the rest of the year.

One of the projects completed last week was a series of products on zazzle which feature my photgraph, Sunrise Over the Columbia River #4. The Columbia River shines radiantly in the sunrise as it flows tranquilly towards the pacific ocean bordered by dark silhouettes of evergreen trees standing like sentinels on the Oregon shore and mist shrouded mountains beyond in Washington.

Sequins toujours !!!

The dream bag doesn’t necessarly wait for us where we would expect it: it’s easy to walk in Balenciaga or Chanel and to find a wonderful bag. We could also ask ourselves if we are really melting for the bag (shape, fabric, color etc…) or if it’s the brand that’s attracting us (works also for the “alike” bags, like all the “chanel like” chained bag that are in all highstreet stores since autumn).

Mais j’aurais jamais pensé tomber sur une merveille… au terminal eurostar! En general moi au terminal eurostar ca donne / But I never would have thought to find such a perfect thing… in the Eurostar Terminal!. Usually me in the eurostar terminal it’s something like that:

Le checking fini dans 20 min (donc j’ai 10 min de retard et le train embarque dans 5), je traine une valise qui doit peser 120 kg, j’ai un sac rempli de chaussures, plus mon sac à main… donc pas le temps pour les boutiques (sauf eventuellement M&S, pour avoir un truc correct à manger) / The checking closes in 20 min (so I’m already 10 min late and the train boards in 5), I’m carrying a suitcase that must weight around 120 kg, I have a bag full of shoes, plus my handbag. So no time for shopping (except M&S to have something decent to eat).

Lundi matin, 8h30, et faut que je me depeche parce que je dois etre à 9h au bureau, donc je joue la montre… idem pas le temps de trainer. / Monday morning, 8:30 am, I have to be at the office at 9, so again no time

Donc il a fallu que je raccompagne quelqu’un pour avoir enfin l’opportunité de trainer dans ce terminal! Et la je passe devant une vitrine… Il est la! Il est beau!

As promised, I spent the day in front of my sewing machine today finishing the third library bag, and working with my gorgeous Amy Butler Nigella fabric.

So, a book bag for Miss 1 to match the ones I made for Miss 3 and I.

The second thing I worked on today was a bag to hold my swift. It was made by a friend’s father, and had been stored in the brown paper wrapper it arrived in, until it fell apart. I cut this out months ago, and then did nothing more. I had decided it needed a pocket but wasn’t sure how I would make it. Today it was a doddle, as I realised a full width pocket would be sewn in with the seams. With a small flap for the top, and a bit of contrasting binding, it was done. The pocket will store the dowels easily and closes with a snap. I totally love my snap press, it is so much easier than trying to get my machine to produce a passable buttonhole! Then it was a matter to whipping up a lining and side seams, and making a casing for the ribbon closure. Ah, yet another bit of Amy loveliness to sit around being useful and pretty.

I had enough left overs to make myself a beautiful work in progress bag too.

And speaking of left overs, I played around with them too, and made three more slightly smaller work in progress bags – the one of on the right is the smallest and would be perfect for a sock knitter. These need rehoming, as a girl doesn’t need *quite* this many beautiful bags.

And now all I am left with from two yards of beautiful fabric is this:

Oh, and a floor desperately in need of vacuuming. What fun it was to spend a whole day sewing. I can’t remember the last time I did. But for now, I had better pick up those knitting needles!

My boyfriend and I were strolling through SOHO, on the Broadway somewhere between Broome and Grand Street which turned out to be one of the most wonderful shopping spots in whole New York City, when we, or more precisely I (my bf’s not that much into bags…), came across this beauty:

This beautiful and huge retro plastic bag smiled at me out of Pearl River Mart’s (477 Broadway) shop window, a shop I already read about in advance and which was earmarked on my to-do list for NY. We were heading for school (this was our first day to walk the Broadway from lower Manhattan up to the Westside) and didn’t have enough time left to enter. Of course I didn’t check the store hours, since I thought – hey we’re in NY, everything’s gonna be open until 8 or 9 p.m. … minimum. So the other day, we went to this street again and after spending half an eternity in four storied Topshop (478 Broadway) where I found bargains like a wonderful grey strapless $10 dress, I crossed the road to finally get my crush of a bag… doors were closed, lights were dimmed and the store hours said “10 AM to 7:20 PM, including weekends and holidays.” Pretty depressing in a city like NY, don’t you think? Our paths didn’t cross again while I just couldn’t get this vintage lovey out of my mind.

Anyway, the brand Dumpling Dynasty by formerly Hong Kong based Fiona Hewitt (maybe you know her other line, Miso Pretty) seems to design some wonderful petite delights and here’s their site: Wu&Wu web shop with the whole product range for US and GB costumers (btw have a look at their “about us” section, adorable!), Klang und Kleid for German customers (that’s where I finally got my “weekend bag”, slightly overpriced though)

However I felt a little incomplete returning to Germany without having seen this 2- or 3-story Asia-kitsch mart, simply because I love all this unfunctional Asia-kitsch stuff. Beware!, Shanghai Antique/Kitsch/Memorabilia markets, boutiques and shops, Elisa est en route…

I’ve been busy at the sewing machine over the past few days, making the most of some pretty fabric and finishing off the work in progress bags I have orders for plus a few more. I have also been working on an outfit each for the girls, although the fact they are incomplete didn’t stop me from working on something entirely different today.

Inspired by our library visit today, I took the opportunity to (finally) cut out the second and third library bags I got the fabric for several months ago. I got one done too – it was one of those magic days where both girls slept and slept. This bag is for me, I adore the fabric, and have enough to make myself a WIP bag which will be made tomorrow, as there is no time like the present!

Like the other library bag, I used a pattern made from an old cloth bag we had worn out, which I cut apart. I added a patchwork panel and contrast of my own design. The fabric is some lovely decorator weight Amy Bulter from her Nigella range. I totally adore it and am glad I have made something ‘useful’ from it. I love having the library books stored in the bags, as they girls books stay in them between visits, so I have an excuse for the bags staying out looking pretty all the time.

We visit the library fortnightly on a Sunday, and today was our library day. A while ago, a friend’s husband was bemoaning to me the pathetic collection of fly fishing books in the library and I pointed out that the section was approximately four times larger than the knitting section. It seems in recent months they have actually been buying some new knitting books though. I was able to get out these good old stitch dictionaries, as well as two new additions.

I have borrowed the Simply Baby book before, in fact the lovely knitted teddies I made were sourced from this book, and while I might not *use* any patterns from either book, it is lovely to flick through the patterns and admire them.

I can see the days ahead taking shape – lots of finishing projects, secret Christmas knitting, and enjoying the spring sunshine before my marking contract tears me away from my life of leisure.

My first furoshiki -- the one in the foreground contains a box of homemade cookies and a book and the tall one in the background contains two bottles of wine.

The “furoshiki” is such a wonderful and artsy way to wrap and carry all things around! In fact, this is post comes in perfect timing while you shop for your Christmas presents.

I have a confession to make: I feel guilty every single time someone gives me a plastic bag for my groceries whenever I forget to bring my grocery bag with me on my errands. It might be a mental block or simply an inconvenience, I always “forget” to bring that bag… Until recently I learned about furoshiki — the Japanese art of wrapping and carrying everything with a piece of fabric. I now carry a piece of fabric that looks more like an oversize handkerchief that I keep in my handbag as it has minimal weight and occupies barely noticeable volume. Whenever I do my groceries with my piece of colourful fabric, I feel deeply satisfied to the knowledge that I am actively reducing plastic bags and wrapping paper consumption with my own piece of reusable and washable fabric. The furoshiki is also a wonderful way to gift wrap home made cookies, marmalade and bottles of wine. It feels somewhat “magical” when you present to your friend your gift wrapped in a piece of fabric rather than in one of those glittery paper gift bag (which are no recyclable) or worse, in wrapping paper which will immediately become useless once the person rips if off your gift.

It’s easy to make your own furoshiki. All you need is a piece of fabric and the ability to tie a knot — It’s that simple! A great place to start is to check out the one-page pdf file released by the Japanese Ministry of Education.

If like me, your handbag is almost always bursting apart or if you are as forgetful as I am, I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to have a piece of fabric as an alternative to a shopping bag. It does not need to be fancy as long as you like the print or the texture of the fabric. All you need to do is to carry it on you and pull it out with a smile the next time you say “I don’t need a bag” to the cashier.

your wonderful life came to a sudden end this morning when i discovered that you were glued to my hallway floor. a leaking bottle of glue was too much for you to take. not only you moved on to greener pastures, several shopping bags and the cover for my umbrella also decided to leave this earth. thankfully, you did not take my camera bag with you – i sort of need that one. and my wallet.

we shared many happy moments together since we first met a picadelly circus in london. we enjoyed robbie williams live at milton keynes together, you held all my important belongings when i needed your support. you helped me drag my groceries home. we went sightseeing together, and when life got rough, you gave me comfort by hosting my pins, buttons, cell phones, keyes, coins…

it is sad to see you go and there will be no easy replacement for you!

rest in peace sweet nike bag

~~

by the way, this is not the only household friend that died on me today. my hair dryer went up in smoke this morning. i had just turned it off but it was still plugged in when it suddenly turned on again (though being off) and then there was smoke everywhere.

i didn’t really know what to do – can you get electricuted when pulling the plug on a smoking hair dryer? well, i gave my all (secretly hoping that i will not end up as a roasted chicken) and pulled the plug. nothing happened except that it had no power to blow dry anymore. but the smoke continued.

the immediately opened window didn’t help much, the disgusting smell is still all over the place. at least i didn’t get toasted. when i finally had my hair dry i just wanted to grab my bag and leave – that’s when i discovered that my dear friend was glued to the hallway floor. thank you very much. this is not how i want to start my day.

a friend helped me to pick out glasses today. now i’m down to two models and another friend needs to tell me on monday which model i have to pick. we also looked for blow dryers and bags and christmas calenders but that was all not what i had in mind. so basically, it was a cheap day for me. except that more things broke than i made whole. mh, life i guess

I’ve chosen to go with dark green and a heather gray. (more exact info to come) I may have also picked up a brand new knitting bag at Mary Maxim’s. It was on sale! Whats a girl to do? I mean, it’s not like slippers using TWO skeins could fit in my sock-sized knitting bag. Nope. I needed something BIGGER. The quilted bag I bought was on sale for only $9.99, so I think I did a good job.

Unfortunately, I’m posting this right before work, so it’s another small one. I’ll come back when I have more time and really go into detail on this project.

I have been lusting over these Louboutin booties since September; hence, being my 1st Item of the Week. Need I say much about Louboutin other than he has, by far, kicked Manolo Blahnik out of the race more than 3 years ago. His designs are feminine yet trendy, stylish and breathtaking. These elegant lace and suede booties will be the statement of any outfit, but come with a hefty price tag. I love how they are reminiscent of boots worn 1800’s and can still be worn in 2010! Found at Beymen, Four Seasons Nile Plaza.
