Me pareció interesante el paso adelante de Microsoft llegando a un acuerdo con Wolfram Alpha para incorporar resultados de este último a las búsquedas que se realicen en Bing.

Sin duda esto dará una nueva vuelta de tuerca en el mercado de las búsquedas en Internet liderado  por los de Mountain View, Google.

Sin prisa pero sin pausa Wolfram Alpha está incorporando cambios en las bases de datos de su buscador según reporta el propio Wolfram en su blog. Dos millones de lineas de código y más de 54.000 bugs o sugerencias han sido evaluados.
Asimismo su creador comenta que en la mitad de las ocasiones que el buscador no genera resultados es por problemas de interpretación lingüística, es decir, el buscador no reconoce lo que se le pregunta aún disponiendo de datos para su respuesta. Queda mucho camino por andar para llegar a ese grial de la web semántica o web 3.0 pero si es cierto que se están dando pasos firmes para ello.

El en gráfico que coloco a continuación de Google Trends se compara el tráfico entre los dos buscadores. Fijaos en los picos de lanzamiento de las herramientas.

Google sigue estando en primera posición con un aplastante 84% mientras le siguen muy por detrás Yahoo y Bing.
En cuarta posición Baidu, el motor de búsquedas Chino (como se nota el volumen de población de este inmenso país) muy parecido a Google y líder en las búsquedas en toda Asia.

很久没去 yahoo 看我原来的 id 了，我只记得大概是很长时间不用就挂了，那个时候觉得 hotmail 和 yahoo 就是老顽固，国内的 163 也好，还是后来居上的 gmail 那个时候都开放了 pop3 或者 IMAP 的访问。也许有人喜欢在网上写邮件，但是我很少这么做，客户端有保证安全性的 PGP，比如做身份验证、加密等（当然，现在还是没有普及起来，不过我自己发的邮件都是通过下面的密钥签名过的，这是我的公钥）。今天发现 hotmail 终于摒弃了这种顽固的做法（今年年初），可以直接用 email client 顺顺畅畅的收发邮件了。可是 yahoo… 据说会改变，可是明明还是没有改变…

玩了一下 yahoo 的东西，email 算是不错的 web mail 吧，然后 messenger 不好说，直接 pidgin 了一把，现在没有联系人。flickr 似乎是比较有特色的服务吧，不过见识了 bababian 的克隆能力后暂时还没觉得有啥特别的地方。感觉 yahoo 的首页跟 google 的那个 iGoogle 意思比较像，可以加入很多 widgets，比如可以直接在里面写 wordpress 的 blog 啥的。不过觉得是不是服务不大像 google 的那么让人觉得眼前一亮，比如 google earth，google pinyin。更多的像是跟别人合作的，如跟 facebook、eBay、myspace 等。

现在这些东西倒是很多了，不知道后面还会有啥。

看来还得继续了解一些现在互联网上的行情。

今天继续看了一些 IM 相关的服务，这些公司基本每家都有了，不管是传统的 ICQ、QQ、MSN，后来的 google talk（使用 XMMP 协议），还有 yahoo messanger，AIM，到现在 facebook 也能 IM、myspace 也可以了，百度有个 hi（还有一个叫 bonjour 的不知道怎么玩，当然这不是百度的了）。Poland 的 gadu gadu（据说简称 gg），SILC 感觉有点半死不活，IBM lotus 的 SAMETIME（企业用户，私有的），wiki 上面有一些历史和相关的统计数据。比较想知道一些细节，比如某各地区某些聊天工具的市场份额。功能的话，除了文字，文件传输，音频、视频，拨打固定电话，发送 SMS 以外也不知道还有没有啥新鲜的 idea 出来了。嗯，mobile… 据说这是新的战场。和 email、blog 等一样，这是让用户能表达忠诚度的一个重要手段，QQ 就是这样垄断了国内的 IM 的，不是因为 QQ 多好，而是因为进入市场早。不过最近才从 QQ 2007 升级到了 2009，发现 QQ 的确现在做得很不错了，不仅仅是界面上，整个程序的反应也快了。除了那些该死的广告，还真的很难挑出大毛病。与最常用的 gtalk 相比，可能也就是体积上不占优势而已。试了一把 baidu hi 倒还没发现啥新鲜的东西。

Τις σοβαρές επιπτώσεις που έχει η επιβολή διαδικτυακής λογοκρισίας για την ανάπτυξη της επιχειρηματικής δράσης επισημαίνει μελέτη των Μπράιαν Χίντλεϊ και Χοσούκ Λι-Μακιγιάμα, που παρουσίασε το ειδησεογραφικό πρακτορείο Reuters.

 

Η μελέτη υπογραμμίζει την ανάγκη λήψης μέτρων από τον Παγκόσμιο Οργανισμό Εμπορίου (ΠΟΕ) και αναφέρει ως χαρακτηριστικό παράδειγμα αυτό της Κίνας. Εκεί η τοπική μηχανή αναζήτησης Baidu, η οποία ακολουθεί τους κρατικούς κανόνες λογοκρισίας στο Διαδίκτυο, έχει κατακτήσει 64% της δικτυακής αγοράς των 293 εκατομμυρίων δολαρίων, έναντι 31,3% της Google. Μάλιστα, υπάρχουν καταγγελίες ότι οι κινεζικές αρχές επαναπροωθούσαν (reroutering) αναζητήσεις από την ιστοσελίδα της Google και άλλων διεθνών μηχανών αναζήτησης σε αυτή της Baidu. Ανάλογα ζητήματα παρατηρούνται στην Κούβα, αλλά και σε χώρες της Δύσης αναφορικά με την πρόσβαση σε συγκεκριμένες ιστοσελίδες (π.χ. πορνογραφικού περιεχομένου).[next]

International Search Engines Compete For Organic Traffic / New Mobile Market

You read that correctly. Despite an increase in profits of 42%, which is a pretty strong showing by anyone’s standards, the stock price fell over 13% on the NASDAQ. How does this kind of thing happen you ask? It appears that Baidu.com is going to suffer from the same issue that has plagued Google for most of its existence which is that no matter how well the engine performs the naysayers will win the day. Remember some of the outrageous numbers that Google used to put up and the following outcry that it wasn’t enough?

Yahoo Finance explains why the stock tumbled despite otherwise chipper news.

The company cautioned that it expects a “temporary negative impact” on fourth-quarter revenue as it completes the transition to its new Phoenix Nest online advertising system and phases out an older system. That sent Baidu shares plunging 13 percent in after-hours trading on the U.S.-based Nasdaq market.

The markets are acting as if they never heard of this new-fangled advertising system and that they perceive it as a threat to the health of the leading Chinese search engine. That’s simply not the case since about 70% of the advertising currently run is already on the new platform.

Baidu’s CEO gives a pretty low-key presentation of this switchover that runs counter to the market’s harried reaction that sent the stock tumbling

“With 70 percent of customers already using Phoenix Nest, we believe this is the right time to complete the switch to the new system,” said chairman and CEO Robin Li in a statement. “We are confident that Phoenix Nest will deliver tremendous benefits to our users, customers and Baidu.”

Maybe people are just too tough on search engines because they think they are a license to print money but despite the admitted possible slowdown it seems to be an irrational non-exuberance regarding the company and its stock.

Of course this kind of short-term reaction to what is eventually a good move long-term for the search engine is evidence of the ‘everything happens right now’ world that we live in. What company hasn’t experienced some short-term pain that has resulted in long-term benefit? It’s normal in business.

Well, maybe it was normal when businesses were run on principles and common sense rather than the day traders and short-term thinkers of today. It’s no wonder that Google offers no guidance on its performance because it will be hung out to dry no matter how good or bad their numbers are. Can’t we start thinking about business again with some common sense rather than uncommon expectations?

百度老年搜索的核心要旨是：让中老年用户最便捷地获取信息，找到所求。它主要为中老年用户提供以下三大类的服务：
1、提供字体更加符合中老年用户体验的主页界面以及搜索结果；
2、整理和开发出了让中老年用户能够需要和使用的实用性网站；
3、在数百万网站中遴选出适合中老年用户的常用网站，并进行了分类收录和及时更新。

在“老年搜索”的首页，我们看到了类似百度盲道的排版方式：搜索+导航，在字体的大小上由普通版百度的16号字体变为24号字体，便于老年人看清，并且通 过老年搜索得到的搜索结果页面的字体也是24号，在字体的选择上有大中小三种选择。在“老年搜索”的帮助页面我们看到，为了帮助老年人上网，还增加了电脑 常识、网络常识、常见问题等等，满足老年人的信息需求，非常人性化。

百度这一点做的没话说，我个人很认可，百度想到了，Google和taobao就没有。这就是创意。很多事情谁都可以做到，但就看谁是第一个想到的，谁又能第一个做到。

Baidu, Inc., a leading Chinese language Internet search provider, has announced it has entered into a strategic partnership with China Unicom (Hong Kong) Limited to provide wireless search for China Unicom’s 3G mobile subscribers.

Under the agreement, Baidu’s wireless search service will be embedded in China Unicom’s 3G mobile phone modules. China Unicom’s mobile subscribers will be able to use preinstalled applications to access Baidu products including web search, Baidu Knows, Baidu Post Bar, image search, news search, MP3 search and other services.

Baidu will also provide search functions within China Unicom’s wireless Internet sites to service the carrier’s users.

Baidu ha conseguido establecerse como el segundo buscador global de Internet, detrás de Google, un logro que ha provocado el interés de los anunciantes, que pretenden aprovechar las 8,000 millones de búsquedas que se hacen en este buscador.

Como publica The Inquirer, el buscador chino cuenta con un 76% de cuota de mercado en China, una cifra más que considerable teniendo en cuenta que es el primer mercado de Internet con casi 400 millones de internautas. En este país, Google cuenta “únicamente” con el 19.8%, aunque sigue siendo líder en el resto de mercados. Pero aparententemente, Google tiene también inversiones en Baidu.

Anunciarse en Baidu es ahora una de las prioridades de las compañías, conscientes de la importancia de China en el mercado mundial y la posible influencia de este buscador para aumentar las ventas.

Nota del autor del blog: Baidu, literalmente significa “cientos de veces” (hundreds of times). Representa la persistente búsqueda para la culminación de los ideales. Está basado en un poema de hace 800 años, durante la dinastía Song.

Bill Hunt at Search Engineland has an interesting how-to guide for site owners hoping to get their content listed on Baidu, China’s #1 search engine.

A recent ComScore report showed that Baidu had more than 8 billion searches in June, making its penetration in China 76%. Google’s penetration in China? Just under 20%.

It should come as no surprise, then, that marketers are jumping to get some face time Baidu. Can it be done? Here are Hunt’s tips for getting ranked on Baidu:

1. Language – The site must be in Chinese

2. Hosting – The site should be hosted in China

3. Content – Text should be at the top of the page because the crawlers don’t always scan the full page

4. Flash – Just as with Google, Flash is not friendly to Baidu’s crawlers

So who should be worried about ranking on Baidu?

Hotels with properties in China should consider taking steps to improve odds of being ranked on Baidu. Likewise, hotels with properties outside China that are marketing to a Chinese audience would also benefit greatly from appearing in the country’s number 1 search engine.
