In the year 2009, there were several new bikes launches in India but a few of them impress bike enthusiasts. Among the new launches, there were Bajaj Pulsar 135 LS, Bajaj Discover 100cc, Kawasaki Ninja 250 R, Honda CB Twister, TVS Jive, TVS Wego, Yamaha VMAX, Yamaha YZF R1, Hero Honda Karizma ZMR PGM Fi, Honda CB1000R, Honda CBR1000RR, TVS Apache, Royal Enfield Bullet Classic 500 and Royal Enfield Bullet Classic 350, Mahindra Rodeo and Mahindra Duro, new Honda Activa and Honda Aviator etc. Out of all these bikes in India, Kawasaki Ninja 250 R recently given the award for Indian Motorcycle of the Year (IMOTY). The bike, Kawasaki Ninja 250 R, was judged by a panel of journalists by reviewing environmental responsibility, fuel efficiency, maneuverability, comfort, safety, performance, design, functionality, price and driver/rider satisfaction.

Kawasaki Ninja 250Rgot 53 points against other bikes in India and won the prestigious award. The bike is priced at Rs 2.69 lakh (ex-showroom price). The powertrain of the sports bike is awesome. Kawasaki Ninja 250R is powered by DHOC four stroke engine with a displacement of 249cc. This is supported by parallel twin-cylinders. The engine churns a maximum power of 32bhp at 11000 rpm and develops maximum torque of 22NM at 8200 rpm. The engine is liquid cool that automatically cools the engine. This time the female is provided with thick piston rings that is meant for minimizing oil consumption. Apart from this, the design of the combustion chamber optimized to maximize combustion efficiency and reduce emissions.

Kawasaki Ninja incorporates 6 speed transmission that is found in a few bike in India. It also give a chance to bikers for styling and racing. Exhaust system is also refreshed in the new version. The silencer is fully tested for pleasing sound and help to balance the power.

Bajaj Auto, the second largest two-wheeler maker in India, is hoping to sell around 85,000 units of Pulsars a month in India with the introduction of New Bajaj Pulsar 135 LS. At present, the company sells 50,000 Pulsars in a month. Now, Bajaj hopes to sell 35,000 more units of the flagship model. The monthly target will help them to touch goal of one million per year in 2010-11 for the Bajaj Pulsar brand. Bajaj Auto, General Manager, Marketing- Two Wheelers, Milind Bade, told media persons here that the new Pulsar launch will help the sports bike market to move from 16 per cent to 20-25 per cent by the end of the next financial year. He added that Bajaj’s vision is to convert India a nation of bikers from a nation of commuters. He further said that the new Bajaj Pulsar 135 LS is the first four valve DTS-i engine bike in the world. It is also the only light sports bike in India.

Bajaj Auto is the second largest two wheeler manufacturer but it is continuously facing tough competition from Hero Honda in each segment. TVS Motor stands very close to Bajaj Auto in regard of sales. TVS Motor’s flagship model TVS Apache is a popular Indian bike. Bajaj Auto already had bikes in 135cc segment like Bajaj Discover and Bajaj XCD 135 and with the launch of Bajaj Pulsar 135 LS company plans to makes its position more strong in this segment.

A long time before, Bajaj Auto has changed its tagline from ‘Hamara Bajaj’ to ‘Distinctly Ahead’. This tagline is proved to be true in real sense as the company now decided to exit the scooters segment by March 2010. Once Bajaj Auto was the single manufacturer of scooters in India and enjoyed the largest scooter producer position in India. But after coming of various two-wheeler companies in India, Bajaj left with less sales of scooters and it also started to produce bikes with the help of Kawasaki. Now it announced to concentrate on only bikes in India. It tied-up with KTM and Kawasaki to produce high-powered motorcycles including Bajaj Pulsar 300 and Bajaj Pulsar 350. Recently, Bajaj Auto launched Bajaj Discover 100cc and Bajaj Pulsar 135. MD of Bajaj Auto Rajiv Bajaj told recently that the company aims to be number one bike maker in India in the next five years by leaving behind likes of Hero Honda and Honda. Honda does make six to seven million bikes per year and Bajaj intends to produce more than this to become the leader in motorcycles. At present, Bajaj is the second largest two-wheeler company in India after Hero Honda.

He added that if we want to be a specialist in producing bikes on a global scale. He emphasised that they need to make a sacrifice in the form of scooters. Currently, Bajaj Auto has only one scooter-Bajaj Kristal. The company produces only 1,000 units of Bajaj Kristal a month. Bajaj Auto has neck to neck fight with TVS Motor which sells its flagship model TVS Apache in a good number.

India is becoming the birthplace of new alternative fuel bikes which are to dominate the auto world. First in the list is Bangalore based Reva which had launched electric cars in India and outside. Now, another Bangalore based auto company, Eko Vehicles Pvt. Ltd, has launched world’s first hybrid bikes. The new hybrid bikes are: EKO Strike and EKO ET 120. The hybrid bikes has been developed by EKO and Emerging Vehicle Technologies. The EKO ET 120 is priced at Rs 40,000 in India while the EKO Strike has tagged at Rs 22,000. The bikes have got petrol engine and electric motor. The bike is designed to touch 65 kmph of top speed. The machine are powered by a 70cc mill. These bikes are not required any registration or license as other electric bikes in India.

The company was started in January 2005 and could sold over 15,000 units of EKO Cosmic and EKO Velociti. The company has already 100,000 booking for these vehicles. By 2010, EKO would increase its production capacity to 20,000 units a month. This and other expansion plans will cost around Rs 30 to 50 crore in the above mentioned time.

Meanwhile, India’s second largest two-wheeler company Bajaj Auto introduced its Bajaj Pulsar 135 LS to compete with TVS Apache and Honda Stunner.

Bajaj Auto, once known for its scooters which revolutionised the two-wheeler market in the country, today said it will exit the segment by the end of the fiscal to focus exclusively on motorcycles.

The company that by and large created the scooter market in the country through its popular ‘Hamara Bajaj’ campaigns in the 1980s and 90s, today sells just one scooter– the 100-cc gearless Crystal.

Pläne, gemeinsam mit Bajaj Auto, einem weiteren indischen Autohersteller, ein technisch einfaches, sehr kleines und für die Bevölkerung auf dem Subkontinent leistbares Auto zu bauen, gibt es ohnehin schon länger, aber im letzten Jahr war davon nichts mehr zu hören gewesen…

Diese Verzögerungen hängen laut Ghosn damit zusammen, dass weder Nissan noch Bajaj bisher darin Erfahrung hatten, ein derartiges Fahrzeug zu konstruieren. Der ursprünglich für 2011 anvisierte Marktstart dürfte deswegen auch nicht mehr einzuhalten sein, kommen soll der automobile Winzling fix. Sollte ihm in Indien Erfolg beschieden sein, könnte es sogar sein, dass er es auf diverse Exportmärkte schafft, wobei vor allem andere Schwellenländer in Asien beglückt werden dürften. Nach Europa, Japan oder in die USA wird er hingegen wohl kaum kommen, obwohl das nicht ganz ausgeschlossen ist. Schließlich soll auch der Nano in einer aufgefetteten Version irgendwann die Fahrer in den Industrieländern glücklich machen *g*.

By this time couple of companies have announced their Q2 earning reports. I am finding mixed kind of reports from different Indian companies. Some companies reported excellent results and others reported average or even bad results.

All the investors needs to keep watch on the overall Q2 results of the companies and need to take clues from them to decide about the positions in their respective portfolio. Q2 Results

Bajaj Auto launched Bajaj Discover 100cc DTS-Si in July 2009 and got unexpected response thereby robust growth in sales figure and net profit. The new 100 cc Discover broke all the records of sales in bike segment and managed to sell over 1 lakh units in just 50 days of launching. In nut shell, demand is high and supply is low. So that the company has to hike the production of the bike at Pantnagar plant. At present the company is producing around 80,000 bikes a month and willing to increase it by January 2010.

There are several reasons of Discover’s gala success are- highest mileage in the class-80 kmpl, value for money-priced at Rs 40,000, five-speed gearbox, alloy wheels, LED tail lamps and self-start. TVS is also going to launch its TVS Neo in India very soon.Bajaj Auto, the leading auto major, is believed to launch a couple of new bikes in India. Recently the company quoted by saying in media reports that it will launch another entry or executive class bike in India in January 2010.

After that alliance, Piaggio got an alliance with LML. That alliance was also ended in 1999. Now the company announced to introduce it again in India. The company will produce its range domestically. At present, the Italian firm produces three and four wheelers under the brand name Ape. This brand is manufactured in its Baramati facility.

Bajaj Auto has phased out the Pulsar 200 model to make way for the new Pulsar 220, as both were priced on a par, despite the latter being more powerful.

The new Pulsar 220, launched three weeks earlier, is a refurbished version of the earlier model launched in December 2006. The Pulsar 200 was launched in January 2007 and carried an ex-showroom price of about Rs 70,000.

However, to take on competing products in the premium category (priced upwards of Rs 65,000) with the likes of Yamaha FZ16, Fazer and R15, Hero Honda’s Karizma, TVS Apache 180 and the Honda CBF Stunner PGM-FI, Bajaj has slashed the price of Pulsar 220 by more than Rs 15,000. It will now be sold at Rs 70,000, ex-showroom.

S Sridhar, chief executive (two-wheelers), Bajaj Auto, said, “The carburettored version of the new Pulsar 220, which has been launched, offers higher power and better performance at a much lesser price.

So, continuing with the Pulsar 200 was not possible, as it was priced in the similar range. We wanted to offer the buyers a better bike at an affordable rate.”

The bike, however, is still available in select showrooms at the earlier price without any discounts. “Some units of the Pulsar 200 are available with us and there will be no more supply of it from the company,” said a Mumbai-based dealer of the Probiking showroom, Bajaj’s speciality outlet that sells only premium bikes.

The Pulsar 200 has a 198.8cc engine, which delivers 18 bhp power, while the Pulsar 220 has a 220cc engine, which generates 21.04 bhp of peak power. Although the new Pulsar 220 is heavier than the Pulsar 200 by five kg, at 150 kg, it is faster than the smaller sibling at 144 km/hour, as compared to 130 km/hour.

Currently, the company produces three models under the Pulsar brand — Pulsar 150, Pulsar 180 and Pulsar 220. All the three models have only recently gone through a face-lift labelled as the ‘2009 edition’.

Meanwhile, in a bid to increase its market share in the 100 cc category, Bajaj Auto today launched its popular selling model “Discover” in the entry level segment.

Bajaj held a marketshare of 43 per cent in the premium 150 cc segment contributed by sales of its premium bike ‘Pulsar’ and a 9 per cent market share in the entry level segment through “Platina” as of April-June 2009.

With the latest launch, the company hoped to garner a significant market share in the segment this fiscal.
