<p>Jadi ceritanya kemarin ane abis ngisi bensin Pulsar ane niy di Pertamina Pasti Pas deket Pondok Indah Mall 1. Kondisi tangki keadaannya hampir kosong dan Res udah kepake sekitar 50 KM-an. Jadilah ane melipir ke SPBU terdekat, ane bilang deh ke si Mba&#8217;e nya (yang masih tersenyum lelah karena sudah senyum sejak siang sampe malem, secara kebijakan perusahaan mengharuskan dia untuk senyum ke setiap pelanggan)&#8230;</p>
<p>Chazzy13 : &#8220;Mba isi Premium, full tank&#8221;<br />
Mba&#8217;e Pasti Pas : &#8220;Dimulai dari angka nol ya pak!&#8221;<br />
Chazzy13 : &#8220;Iya&#8230;&#8221;</p>
<p>Sambil plangak-plongok nungguin tangki diisi, dubidu&#8230;bidu&#8230;.koq lama aja ya??? Makin ngga enak ma yang ngantri di blakang ane tatapannya mulai pada sinis &#38; menunjukkan ekspresi ngga sabaran. Akhirnya setelah tangki penuh ane minta deh tuh bon bensin nya (ngarep2 kali aja bisa di reimburse ke kantor).</p>
<p>Ternyata disitu kecetak klo Pulsar ane abis nenggak 18.16 L Premium, mungkin ini salah satu sebab kenapa ane suka ma Pulsar&#8230; KAPASITAS TANGKI yang maknyosss \\(^o^)// yeay&#8230;. jadi ga perlu sering-sering mampir ke SPBU tiap bensin abis. Dulu siy ane sempet ngisi ampe 20 L sekali ngisi, cuman ane juga bingung koq bisa ya nyampe 20 L, wong di buku panduannya aja kapasitas tangki Pulsar itu 16 L + 2 L (Res) = 18 L.</p>

<p>Tapi anehnya klo ane ngisi di Shell ngga pernah bisa lebih dari 18 L walaupun keadaan tangki bensinnya termasuk miris alias dah mulai ndut2an kehabisan bensin. Apakah karena di Shell itu bensin nya lebih padet? Ato gara-gara beda di meterannya aja? Cuman sejauh ini siy ane emang jauh lebih puas kalo ngisi bensin di Shell, kayanya worthed aja ngisi Shell Super Extra dibandingin ngisi Pertamax Plus.</p>
<p>(Maaf sebelumnya, bukannya ane ngga cinta ma produk Indonesia ato ngga Nasionalis, cuman kita berbicara dari sisi konsumen aja. Mana ada siy konsumen yang mo rugi atau dapet barang jelek&#8230;&#8217;tul ngga?)</p>
<p>Anyway, kedepannya ane bakalan trus update blog ini setiap ngisi bensin dari keadaan &#8220;miris&#8221; sampe ke kondisi &#8220;ceria&#8221; dan berganti merk mulai dari Pertamina, ke Shell, trus ke Petronas sampe ke Total.</p>
<p>(Yang terakhir ini merk bensin loh bukan toko buah&#8230;he3x)</p>
<p>*Moga-moga Pulsar ane ngga mules karna harus gonta-ganti bensin tiap kali dia haus&#8230;(^_^)</p>
<p>NB :  Buat yang belum tau, <strong>SPBU</strong> itu singkatan dari<strong> Stasiun Pengisian Bahan Bakar Untuk Umum</strong> : )</p>

Having owned the first generation Pulsar 150 (2002), the second generation Pulsar 180 (2005) and today driving a friend&#8217;s latest Pulsar 150, I wanted to blog my experiences with the Pulsar breed.</p>
<p><strong>Pulsar 150 Classic</strong></p>

<p style="text-align:left;">This was my first bike. Raw muscular looks. Back in 2002 it&#8217;s the bike to be on. What else could a first year college student yearn for! The Pulsar 150 had a great rush of power and was a dream bike when it comes to handling. I could draw a line on the road and ride right on it in total control. Best things I liked was the handling due to the short and excellent wheelbase. What I did not like was the clutch &#38; gear box which felt like the ones in a municipal town bus.</p>
<p><strong>Pulsar 180 &#8211; Red and black Version</strong></p>

<p style="text-align:left;">When the second generation Pulsar 180 was launched I couldn&#8217;t resist it. The new fairing, wider wheels with black alloys and twinspark. This bike being a 180 had marginally better power and a plush ride due to the gas shocks. What I missed was the razor sharp handling. The agility is lost with the classic pulsar and the bike was more of a balanced machine. I was not able to feel the rear wheel as in my earlier pulsar. I sold the P180 in 2008 as I moved to bangalore and now drive a &#8216;99 Rx-135.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;"><strong>Current Pulsar 150</strong></p>

<p style="text-align:left;">It&#8217;s been a while since I rode the pulsar. My Rx-135 was sufficient fun and I occasionally used to ride my friend&#8217;s unicorn. I always used to tell my friend that the Unicorn is an amazing bike but still I would never buy it. I realized the reason again today. I drove the Pulsar 150. It beats the Unicorn hands down. Four years after selling my Pulsar 150, and today I felt like a college student again! The new Pulsar engine is more gruntier and the bike handles like an aeroplane. The way the bike roars as you accelerate is totally missing in bikes like Unicorn. The new bike has digital clocks (I don&#8217;t like the design of the meters though), wider rear tyres, engine kill switch and a surprisingly smooth gear shift. It was a short ride and I took the bike to 99kmph, it felt restricted after that but the pull until then was amazing. I am waiting to get my hands on a P220 to see how it will be, I am sure it will blow me away!</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">I parked the bike back and couldn&#8217;t stop grinning. Yes, it&#8217;s a boy indeed!</p>

After quite a long time of surveying, collecting money and taking some guts; I finally took Bajaj Pulsar 180 as my first motorcycle of sport type.</p>
<p>At first, I didn&#8217;t realize that it was the new model called UG4 Pulsar 180. I was admiring its beauty; the look that in instant resembling Bajaj P200.</p>
<p>The only thing that I like more in P200 rather than P180, is its dimension which is longer in wheelbase (1350 mm compare to 1250 mm). Or maybe the little yet pretty tank flap in P200, that makes it look much longer than P180. And now at new UG4 P180, Bajaj has made it a bit longer that is 1345 mm. Is it really that important? For me, yeah. Just like a pretty woman, the tank flap and longer wheel base make P180 much sexier <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>The P180 UG4, also comes with a new model of clip on handle-bar (stang jepit), two piece of grab rails and split seat that once again resembling the P200&#8217;s look.</p>

<p>The other controversial factor, is that you won&#8217;t find kick-starter in UG4. I still can&#8217;t imagine what would happen if -God forbid- the electric went in trouble and I couldn&#8217;t turn-On the engine. So, you know what? Commenting the missing of kick-starter; some guys in the mailing-list of Indonesian pulsar-rider suggest me to go to the gym, get my body shaped-up so I can be strong enough to push the motor to the nearest repair-shop <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' />  Yeah, 150 kg motor is quite a burden for me.</p>
<p>So far, I&#8217;m still waiting for some legal documents for this motor; hence I can&#8217;t take it on the road. Yet, a little testimony from me, in a single word I can say I&#8217;m satisfied. With all the features it has, the new beautiful look, and compare with its price (18 mills IDR); this motor has truly become worthed for its value-to-money factor.</p>
<p>For temporary, I gave it a name of Wiwit. Why? Cause everytime I look at it, I can&#8217;t stop myself from being amazed of its beautiful yet handsome look. Can&#8217;t wait to use it for my daily ride.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Pertama kali sy mengenal Apache adalah dari Kang Jhonny (<em>my uncle</em>), yang waktu itu mengajak sy untuk menemani KJ membeli motor sport. Sy sempat kaget waktu KJ mengutarakan niatnya karena kendaraan mobil sudah nongkrong 2 di garage-nya. Alasan KJ membeli motor tiada lain karena ke praktisan motor yang mampu menaklukan kemacetan Kota Bandung (<em>Bandung beuki macet ku lobana moll&#8230;beuhh)</em>. KJ mengeluh Ketika harus mengajar di Zatinenzer kemudian ada rapat mendadak atau ngajar di program pasca di Dipatiukur, KJ bilang “ malu kalau terlambat terus..hehehe”</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><!--more-->Referensi kendaraan KJ adalah Pulsar dan Apache, waktu itu sya sempat anehh.motor apaan tuh. Kemudian pada suatu hari kami langsung ke dealer Bajaj di Cicadas test ride mulai dari yang excede, P180 &#38; P200. Tampak KJ sudah akrab dengan sales Bajajnya. Ternyata KJ sudah kesana 2x sebelum sama sya..(<em>Tampaknya KJ membawa sy butuh teman sharing nehh</em>). Setelah dari Bajaj langsung hunting test ride Apache di dealer TVS Buah Batu,,lagi2 KJ sudah akrab dengan Bu Lina salesnya,, dan ternyata KJ dah 2x mampir ke dealer tvs sblm dengan sya&#8230;(<em>nampaknya KJ lagi menggunakan mata kuliah metode penelitian dalam mengambil keputusan nihh&#8230;hihihih</em>). Setelah kami mencoba apache KJ bilang ke Bu Lina “<em>Now we have completely information, Surely, we have to consider flag to flag before. So i will decide whether Pulsar or Apache immediately</em>.”</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Setibanya di rumah dibuatlah matrik kelebihan dan kekurangan antara Pulsar VS Apache, kami terlibat diskusi sampai 3 hari lamanya. Referensi dari internet menjadi menu tambahan. Akhirnya setelah head to head, Kami menjatuhkan pilihan pada Apache. Beberapa alasan KJ memilih apache adalah: 1) Blok mesin lebih halus seperti motor jepang, 2) Suara mesin halus nyaris tak terdengar, 3) Harga apache rasional, 4) Tarikan gas apache ckup responsif, ini yang membuat KJ jatuh cinta pada Apache. Point yang ke-4 baru-baru ini sy baru mudeng dinamakan inovasi teknologi mesin apache yaitu RTR (<em>Racing Throthle Response</em>) tea..</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Setelah palu diketuk maka KJ membeli Apache Black, 2 bulan kemudian sy juga kena virus KJ dengan red apache –nya. Pada awal inreyen, perpindahan gigi cukup sulit terutama ke posisi N, namun setelah 500 km (service pertama) dilakukan, transmisi sudah agak normal. Mekanik bilang, kalo msh inreyen part jeroan mesin masih blum ngeplak. Oya,,jangan biarkan indikator bensin di speedometer berkelip karena itu tandanya bensin yang digunakan alah bensin cadangan. Motor jadi berjalan ndut-ndutan. Sampai 1000 km speed max hanya 60 km tidak ada komplain yang cukup berarti dari performance engine, kopling, digital oke bgt.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Satu hal kelemahan apache dan menurut saya sangat fatal adalah ferforma ban bawaan yang licin jika kondisi aspal basah. Kualitas Ban yang jelek diamini juga oleh riders apache yang lain di Paguyuban Motor TVS Bandung, gara-gara ban licin byak rider apache yang berjatuhan, sya jga sudah merasakan terpelanting karena ban licin ketika menge-rem mendadak padahal speed hanya 50 kpj. Oleh karena itu mayoritas di komunitas kami, Ban bawaan TVS sudah di buang ke laut aje..Hati-hati..buat teman2 yang masih pake ban original, atau yang maw beli apache..mending langsung di ganti aja kalo dana dah mencukupi biar lebih safety berkendara nya</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Ban bawaan apache merk pabrik yaitu “TVS Tyre”, nampaknya yang menjadi biang keladi licin di waktu basah menurut hemat sya adlah compound ban-nya yang sangat keras. Jika teman2 yang mempunyai apache, coba ditekan bannya..terasa sangat keras ban bawaan apache, berbeda dengan ban lainnya misal swallow, dunlop, irc, battlax ,dll yang compund nya lebih lunak. Jika kondisi jalan kering daya cengkram ban bawaan apache memang hebat sekali tidak ada masalah.. Jika hujan mulai turun..baru deh sport jantung..harus ngeteyeup.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Tentang sparepart yang saya alami sampai detik ini ga ada masalah, sparepart yg bersifat fast moving selalu ready stock. Pada saat mempertimbangkan membeli ini motor, adanya pabrik TVS di Karawang seluas 20 ha yang diresmikan SBY Tahun 2007 membuat kehawatiran tentang sparepart jadi musnah. Logikanya adalah TVS dah berinvestasi besar2an dng membangun pabrik, tdk mungkin hanya jualan untuk 1-5 tahun ke depan pasti untuk jangka panjang..</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Terkait dengan garansi kerusakan spare part, dari pihak tvs memang memenuhi janjinya dengan adanya garansi. Bermodalkan buku service dan FC KTP/SIM spare part yang rusak sudah diganti dengan yang baru. Hal ini saya alami ketika indikator bensin eror berkelip-kelip walaupun tanki bensin dah terisi penuh..Setelah di chek oleh mekanik di Dealer TVS Tasikmalaya (karena saya lagi mudik), ternyata part pelampungnya bensin yang kena,,akhirnya diganti sama yang pelampung yang baru secara FREE OF CHARGE (<em>GRATISSS..</em>). Teman-teman di PAMOR TVS (Kang Hari) komplen speedometer digitalnya mati sebelah..di TVS Pasteur langsung diganti dengan yang Baru..Gratis lagihh..(kebayang kalo ga ada garansi,,harga speedometer digital mahal..RP 535.000).</p>

Pemecahan rekor akan digelar di Sirkuit Sentul Jawa Barat pagi ini.</p>
<p>Jika berhasil memecahkan rekor, Bajaj XCD 125 cc akan mencatatkan diri dalam Museum Rekor Indonesia (MURI).</p>
<p>Bajaj XCD 125 diperkirakan mampu mengitari 3-5 putaran Sirkuit Sentul dengan menggunakan bensin hanya sekitar 0,5 liter. Panjang Sirkuit sendiri mencapai 4,12 KM.</p>
<p>Menurut Presiden Direktur PT Bajaj Auto Indonesia KS. Grihapathy, Bajaj telah membuktikan kenggulan aplikasi teknologi DTS-Si pada Bajaj XCD 125 cc.</p>
<p><!--more-->Bajaj yang memiliki performa mesin 125 cc namun irit bahan bakar, dengan tenaga maksimum 9,53 ps pada 7.000 RPM, dengan torsi 10.85 Nm pada 5.000 RPM.</p>
<p>&#8220;Fakta ini menjadikan Bajaj XCD 125 sebagai motor paling irit di kelas motor sport dan juga semakin mengukuhkan posisi Bajaj Auto di teknologi digital twin sparks di dunia,&#8221; ujarnya.</p>
<p>Pemecahan rekor sendiribakal digelar pagi ini di Sirkuit Sentul mulai pukul 10.00 WIB. Apakah Bajaj akan mencapai rekor baru? Kita lihat nanti.</p>

Barangkali  motor dari India ini boleh diklaim sebagai yang teririt di dunia. Dikatakan oleh si pemiliknya Hendry Martin ST. Kata pria yang tinggal di LA (bukan Los Angeles, tapi Lenteng Agung) bahwa setiap bulan hanya diisi 5 liter bensin.</p>
<p>Setiap hari rute motor jenis sport itu  dari rumah ke kantor berjarak 26 km. Belum lagi kata  Martin dibawa keliling rumah. Penasarankan,<em> kok</em> bisa seirit itu? Bebek maupun skubek aja enggak ada bisa menempuh di atas 100 km untuk 1 liter.</p>
<p>Saking penasarannya, tim Motor Plus pun menjajalnya, meski harus dua kali lantaran yang pertama ada kebocoran pada peralatan. Baru uji kedua dengan menempuh 16 km menghabiskan bensin 60 ml. Jadi, kalau 1 liter (1.000 ml) bisa merayap sejauh 266 km. Padahal, standarnya Pulsar DTSi untuk 1 liter hanya mencapai 40 km.</p>
<p><strong><!--more-->Generator  hydrogen</strong><br />
Martin bisa bikin motornya superirit hanya bermodalkan sekitar Rp1,5 juta. Biaya itu untuk membeli berbagai peranti penghemat seperti Xado Revitalisasi, DC Booster, CDI stabilizer, Xtreme Fire booster dan Generator Hydrogen. Dari semua peranti itu, generator hydrogen memberi pengaruh paling besar dan harga alatnya Rp 375 sudah termasuk ongkas pasang.</p>
<p>Keiritannya bisa mencapai 47,5 persen. Alat ini yang memproduksi air menjadi bahan bakar.Karena, kata martin generator memiliki elemen atau sel yang beresonansi setelah diberi arus listrik. “Akibat resonansi tadi, gas hidrogen dan oksigen yang ada di air keluar dan kemudian disalurkan ke karburator sehingga terjadi ledakan,” bilang warga Jl.Joe No.27 Lenteng Agung, Jakarta Selatan ini.</p>
<p>Sistem penyaluran gas (hidrogen dan oksigen) melalui slang ke <em>intake manifold</em> yang di depan karburator. Karena itulah, bensin yang dikonsumsi jadi sangat sedikit sekali. Sebab, energi pembakaran diraih dari oksigen dan hidrogen tambahan tadi.</p>

<p>Untuk mengisi air bisa dari air mineral dan volume tabung sekitar 300 ml. Jumlahnya tdak akan berkurang, hanya keruh dan martin menggantinya setiap tiga hari sekali.</p>
<p>Selain itu, Martin memakai Xado Revitalisasi, Turbo dan Anti Carbon. Semacam cairan yang dicampur ke dalam oli mesin. Tujuannya, untuk mengembalikan kondisi jeroan mesin seperti baru. “Kompresi atau kualitas dalaman mesin setelah masa pakai tidak akan mempengaruhi performa,” tegas pria yang kerja di Telkomsel.</p>
<p>Dengan kondisi mesin  seperti baru, berarti gas tak perelu dibejek. Ujung-ujungnya sedikit bensin yang terbakar. Dan pemakaian cairan ini diyakini Martin memberi kontribusi sekitar 5 persen.</p>
<p>Dari bahan bakar, Martin coba mencegat pada sistem kelistrikan. Di sektor ini, ia menggunakan DC Booster yang dipasang paralel ke aki. Diestimasikannya memberi keuntungan sampai 15 persen.  “Dengan begitu, pembakaran jadi lebih sempurna,”yakin pria asal Padang, Sumatera Barat.</p>
<p>Masih di kelistrikan, untuk menjaga kestabilan  tegangan input CDI, supaya bekerja optimal, ditambah dengan  stabilizer yang dipasang antara aki dan CDI. Alat ini menyumbang peran sekitar 10 persen.</p>
<p>Terakhir, Xtreme Fire Booster yang ditempatkan antara koil dan busi. Fungsinya memperkuat energi pengapian. Peran dalam pengiritannya dinilai Martin bisa sampai 20 persen. Dan Martin bersama perusahaannya Multiniaga Solusindo memberi kabar kalau temuannya ini bisa buat motor apa saja tanpa harus memodifikasi atau membongkar jeroan. Enggak usah takut rusak karena ada garansinya.</p>

<p><span style="color:#666666;font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">Actually I have the greatest sentimental attachment to this particular bike I have. The reason is my wife, Megs. On the first anniversary of our marriage she decided to gift me with the down payment for the bike. The miserly me was very happy at the prospect of having a good bike at 75% the cost! </span></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#666666;font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">Anyways, I think its one of the coolest bike ever. I used to ride it to work everyday. Everyone wondered why. Shouldn’t I be traveling by a car (couldn’t afford one then!) or a train (hmmm.. isn’t this more dangerous?). But I think it was ok. My wife didn’t think so. I guess she didn’t like to give me those back massages every Sunday. </span></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#666666;font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">But I think it was cool. I made it to work at Worli every morning in 45 mins. And back home in one hour. Zero stress. Isn’t that a tremendous boon in Mumbai? And I LOVED it. I used to just look at the bored faces of all the guys driving back home at the signals (I am one of them now!!). On bad days poor motorists had to wait for the signals to turn green at least eight times at the Mahim Church junction on Cadell road, don’t know the situation now, though. I never took more than one signal stop. I was a staunch believer of the Leftist Movement (stick to the left of the road, there is always enough space for the bike to pass!!!). And then, I used to derive this sadistic pleasure in giving them a wry smile as if I understand their plight. </span></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#666666;font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">My bike really peaked when it hit the Western Express Highway frequently touching top speeds of 90 kms. The condition of the roads and the trafific ensured that this did not last for more than 5 seconds at best. Anyways the ride was a great pleasure in all seasons even during the lashing rains of Mumbai. </span></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#666666;font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">The only traumas that we (that’s me and my bike) were subjected to are the rickshaws and taxis. But that’s another story. </span></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#666666;font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">I have been a bike guy ever since I know it. And I guess I will be so till the end. I drive a car to work now, but the bike still stays with me! Remember what I said earlier, the bike will always be my first love!! </span></span></p>

<p>The Bajaj Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi is the latest addition to the Pulsar family of motorcycles from Bajaj Auto. Features differentiating this bike from other members of the DTS-i family include oil cooled, fuel injected engine, front and rear disc braking, tubeless tyres, a digital speedometer console (recently introduced in all other Pulsar editions) and parabolic/ellipsoidal projector headlamps.<br />
Bajaj displayed the 220 DTS-Fi at the Delhi Auto Expo 2006. The Indian nationwide launch happened in July 2007.</p>
<p><strong>Features and specifications</strong><br />
With this introduction, Bajaj Auto would achieve a close second in the race to offer a microprocessor-based fuel injected motorcycle to Indian customers, after Hero Honda&#8217;s 125 cc Glamour FI motorcycle. The new Pulsar has a longer wheelbase than its predecessor, factory-fitted front and rear disc brakes and detailed digital instrumentation. The Pulsar DTS-Fi generates a maximum power of 20 bhp and a maximum torque of 19.12 N·m (14 ft·lbf). It is also the first Indian two-wheeler with a hydraulic-actuated rear disc (230 mm) brake. It also features a stacked headlamp setup, with a projector low beam and separate high beam. The motorcycle is 2,035 mm in length, 750 mm in width and 1,140 mm in overall height. The curb weight is about 150 kg. The new Pulsar 220 DTS-Fi can achieve a top speed of 135 km/h (with a rider weighing 68 Kg.)<br />
<strong>Engine technology</strong><br />
The acronym DTS-Fi stands for Digital Twin Spark Fuel Injection. Like DTS-i (which is the mother technology) the engine has two spark plugs, but, instead of conventionally positioned straight ports, the offset positioning of the ports generate high swirl and turbulence of the air fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. This results in highly efficient combustion that further results in exceptional mileage. Like the mother DTS-i technology, the DTS-Fi technology is a patented technology developed by Bajaj Auto R&#38;D.<br />
<strong>Overall</strong><br />
The motorcycle boasts a highly refined (low noise, no vibes, slick shifts and all) 220cc motor that makes a heady 20 bhp and 1.95 kgm of torque. And it is effortless, free-revving and can roll along at 50 kph in top gear should you feel the need. And return 50 kpl while you are doing that. It&#8217;s almost like having your cake and eating it too.<br />
The big ones are tubeless tyres (one of the reasons for the great handling feel), 55-watt projector low beam headlamp (even, no-glare illumination), slick digital dash (feature packed and easy to read) and new styling package with distinctive LED taillamps. But the biggest of them all is fuel injection, which has allowed the DTS-Fi to get that linear power curve, crisp feel and instant throttle response.<br />
A bike like the Pulsar DTS-Fi is significant because this is the first nod from a major manufacturer to the Indian performance enthusiast in years.<br />
The Bajaj Pulsar 180 and to some extent the Hero Honda Karizma have been the staples for us, but in one stroke, they&#8217;re both passe. Here is a motorcycle that&#8217;s more sorted, faster and more effortless.<br />
And while Bajaj won&#8217;t say it, the DTS-Fi is not going to be outrageously expensive either. They confirmed a five-digit price tag and our sources are hinting at an on-road price of Rs 92,000 or thereabouts. Yes, fully loaded. Which is outstanding value for money.</p>

<title><![CDATA[Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary]]></title>

I’ve never crossed a watering hole on a bike. Only crossed puddles on the road after heavy rains when I had the option of lifting my legs up so the bike wouldn’t splash water on my jeans. I don’t have hiking shoes or a breathable raincoat. These did not make any sense at all in the cities I have lived in. I do not have any sturdy yet comfortable pants. Only low-waist jeans that I usually wear to pubs. I have had a hepatic cyst removed and a twelve inch scar down my waist that hurts every time I walk a bit more than I should. I don’t like the fear of animals while I am traveling. I hate the rain in a forest.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">So what’s the first thing I do when my husband (will call him D henceforth) proposes a trip to the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary far far away from our place? I say yes without a thought. Bright thing to do? It was more than bright. It was brilliant. Really. Despite what my mind was telling me. If nothing it did wonders for my wanderlust bragging.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">Cotigao is at a distance of 5 km from the town of Canacona in the south of Goa. That is a distance of 90 km from our place along National Highway 17, and a couple of hours later (counting all the cigarette breaks and the occasional soft drink break in between) we rode into the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary gate on our left.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">
<p class="MsoNormal">There is a reception center as you enter the gates and a very helpful guy there (called Siddharth I think) switches on the lights for you to see the bones of dead animals and some dried seeds and scatological examples of the animals that roam the jungle. While you are looking around he carefully explains the route inside the jungle to your partner, complete with a map and information about the place. You learn that Cotigao is spread over 89 sq km and has been a designated reserve since 1969. You learn that you have to go a first 3.5 km to reach a T-junction, and another 3.5 km to reach the first tree-top watch tower. You could go further to the second watch tower near this place called Endre, but the jungle is thicker there, and you must watch out for the place is known for its King Cobras.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">From then on it was a slow, sluggish, sulky ride into the forest for me. My husband of course loved it, but as the pillion I was jumping on the seat because the road inside it mostly broken tarmac and some very bumpy dirt tracks. I decided within ten minutes that I am going to hate the place.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">But it was nice in a way to go over rocks and watering holes as D balanced the bike carefully and I kept my eyes peeled for animals. It is a different matter that we only saw a huge crested eagle, some lizards, a chameleon and some frogs, but it is believed that the forest is home to sloth bears, deer, wild boars, panthers, laughing hyenas and Indian Bison, as well as lesser-known types like the Flying Squirrel, Slender Loris, Indian Pangolin, Mouse Deer, Four-horned Antelope, Malabar Pit Viper, Hump-Nosed Pit Viper, White-bellied Woodpecker, Malabar Trogon, Velvet-fronted Nuthatch, Heart-spotted Woodpecker, Speckled Piculet, Malayan Bittern, Draco or Flying Lizard, Golden-back Gliding Snake and Malabar Tree Toad.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">We were lost in the middle of the forest and reached towards Endre where the forest did get denser and it was rather obvious that not too many vehicles go in there. We got off the bike and chose to walk instead. I had been apprehensive about walking in cobraland but honestly walking was easier on my back than sitting pillion on the track. Plus you cannot take the bike up to the watch tower here. We could stop as many times as we wanted to, take pictures, we could choose our paths across the mudrock waterholes and take in the smell of the forest. It was fun, he walk, among overgrown creepers and butterflies and I soon forgot that I am not a fan of a trek.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The forest was quite dense. Here are basically three types of vegetation that include moist deciduous (dominant vegetation), semi-evergreen and evergreen forests. Some trees get uprooted at monsoon often obstructing the way but on the whole it is all wonderfully green.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">While on our way up we had a surprising rain accompany us. It was in a way a good thing because we were warned that animal sightings are only possible when there is no rain and the animals have only a few spots to drink water from. We tried to keep walking in the rain but had to forgo the trail because the rain simply did not let up. Apparently the tree top watch tower, as well as the five other watch towers around the forest are not to be missed. Well, serves us right because the right time to visit Cotigao is between October and March when there is no rain and the terrain isn’t muddy and dangerously slippery as during the monsoon.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">On the way back there were puddles formed by the sudden downpour and the Talpona and Gal rivers meandering through the sanctuary added to it. Biking was risky and I had to hold tight, but it was a nice experience, if I may say so.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">There is a tavern run by very friendly people on the outskirts of the forest. You may get your beer and the occasional omelet pao there, at five star rates though. Before you leave, make sure you visit the Nature Interpretation Centre and take a look at the animals rescued there, before they are left back into the forest. There is also an ecotourism complex which houses the nature interpretation centre, cottages, toilets, library, reception area and rescue centre, canteen and Range Forest Office. You can cover the whole sanctuary in a day’s time, but if you want to go on the trail as early as 5.30 am and see the famous glowing moss on the trees (the gates outside open only around 7.30am) you could stay at the Bulbul Cottages or the Peacock Cottage (run by the forest department with decent rooms and attached bathrooms) for as little as 250-500 bucks. The Peacock cottage has to be booked from the Divisional Office at Bondla but the Bulbul cottage is more easily reserved at the reception centre at Cotigao. <span> </span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The sanctuary is open from 7 am till 5.30pm for visitors but if you are already inside it is expected that you get back before 6.30 pm. And make sure you do because you can then see the sun go down on the trees like a photograph developing before your eyes. It is beautiful at dusk, and if I can speak for myself, I was sold. I was in love with my first visit to the insides of a National Park. Even the parts I hated I loved. But next time I am wearing better shoes.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">I would suggest taking a bike into the forest. A Honda Unicorn and Bajaj Pulsar worked great for us because the terrain will not really support a car like Maruti 800. A Gypsy might help though other cars may not be narrow enough for most of the trails.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Oh and it is a designated Plastic-free zone so please do not carry any plastic bags or bottles inside. And make sure you bring everything back with you. It isn’t ours to ruin the place with the remnants of a cigarette or a crushed plastic can, is it?</p>
