“BAJOFONDO PRESENTA A SANTULLO”

Santullo es el nombre del proyecto encabezado por Fernando Santullo, vocalista de Peyote
Asesino y colaborador del colectivo Bajofondo. Su álbum debut, producido por Juan Campodónico (Jorge Drexler, Jimena Xariñana, Bajofondo, La Vela Puerca) y Gustavo Santaolalla (Juanes,Julieta Venegas, Molotov, Antonio Carmona, Bajofondo) será editado en breve por el sello Universal Music. Según Campodónico el debut de Santullo muestra “un disco de desamor, que encuentra belleza en lo disfuncional y en lo árido de la vida urbana de hoy”. Para Santaolalla “a través de su poesía, llena de guiños, gestos verbales y una personal filosofía de la vida, Santullo nos muestra su visión de una realidad urbana donde coexisten el humor y la crítica aguda”
 
La música de Santullo (Fernando Santullo nació en Montevideo, Uruguay, creció entre México D.F. y Montevideo, y ha vivido los últimos 8 años en Barcelona), se caracteriza por su mezcla de géneros rioplatenses como la milonga, el tango y el candombe con el hip hop, la electrónica y el rock, entre otros estilos globales. “Me parecía interesante ver que sucedía al confrontar sonoridades y ritmos del Uruguay con la música que me rodea en Barcelona. Que ocurriría al poner frente a un beat candombero filtrado por la electrónica y el hip hop, una guitarra milonguera y un cantante/rapero/narrador que contara historias personales con resonancias universales” señala Fernando, agregando además que “no es algo antropológico o de laboratorio, es el resultado de mi historia musical y personal”.

 
El álbum, que llevará por nombre “Bajofondo presenta Santullo”, comenzó a gestarse en 2005,
casi en paralelo con el exitoso disco “Mar Dulce”, la mas reciente referencia del colectivo
argentino/uruguayo Bajofondo. Santullo aportó dos temas para ese trabajo: “Ya no duele” y el
segundo sencillo, “El mareo”, interpretado por Gustavo Cerati (líder de Soda Stereo) y que
estuviera nominado al Grammy Latino 2008 como “Mejor canción alternativa”. Asimismo,
Fernando se ha presentado en directo junto a Bajofondo en Londres, Madrid, Buenos Aires y
Montevideo entre otras ciudades.

 
Para Campodónico lo esencial del disco de Santullo “es que pone por delante la palabra. Como se dice y qué se dice es el centro” y agrega que “en sus canciones, versos, frases, Santullo recoge varias tradiciones literarias y musicales. Es un poeta del 2010, impregnado de barrio y de asfalto rioplatense pero también de conceptos de la cultura pop global y cosmopolitas”.

 Para Santaolalla, la música de Santullo esta “tan profundamente conectada con el Río de la Plata y específicamente con su Uruguay natal” que “la asociación con el sonido y la propuesta artística de Bajofondo es algo tan orgánico como natural”.

Está rolando um eventinho tango x eletrônico no CCBB de São Paulo. De 22 de setembro a 13 de outubro. Ou seja, já aconteceram dois. Infelizmente não consegui ir a nenhum, e acabo de descobrir que não vou poder ir nos outros também. Já que todos os ingressos para todos os dias e todos horários foram devidamente vendidos. E que a última chance é uma lista de espera que abre 1hora antes das apresentações. o-0  Alguém…?

Também, o ingresso para ver o show dessa galera em uma casa de shows grande fica em torno de 120 dinheiros, enquanto no CCBB a inteira é apenas 6.

Mas tudo bem… essa onda já ta rolando há um tempo e daqui a pouco passam por aqui de novo o Gotan, O Bajofondo….é só esperar.

Anyone who listens to KCRW in La Ciudad de Los Angeles has probably crossed paths with the Gotan Project (yes, this article is about Bajofondo so yes, we are starting with Gotan). Their music has been enthusiastically pimped by Tom Schnabel, Nic Harcourt, Jason Bentley and most likely has earned endorsements from the rest of the musical intelligentsia in the cutthroat high stakes bludgeon-wielding world that is Los Angeles public radio. Gotan Project is a dapper group of Porteños and Parisiens with beautifully tailored suits and extravagant audiovisual pageantry who introduced many in el Sur de California to the monstrous potential that live tango music has to offer – especially when fused the with the deft skills of turntable maestros and multilingual emcees. But what may have gotten overlooked with Gotan’s critical acclaim is that they are merely the tip of the tango renaissance iceberg.

Walk through San Telmo on any given Sunday and you’ll see that there is an abundancia of talented argentine musicians in their 20’s and 30’s exploring, perfecting, and redefining the once anachronistic tango (as well as klezmer…I know, weird…yet undeniably awesome) and giving renewed relevance to a Southern Cone musical tradition that had laid dormant for decades. This counter-intuitive rebellion to embrace the past and integrate it with the present has spawned a school of pure genius that includes Gotan Project, Otros Aires, Tanghetto… and Bajofondo. While any of the above could keep a warehouse filled with several thousand sweating dancers at capacity until daybreak (o aquí en Los Angeles hasta 1:30 a.m. cuando se suena la última llamada), pragmatic logistics keep most of this talent from getting any farther north than Uruguay or Sao Paulo.

Thankfully the argentino who forms the nucleus of Bajofondo is a resident of Los Angeles and has been able to gather his colleagues on several occasions to perform in LA as part of a global tour to demonstrate that the New Tango does indeed go far beyond Gotan Project. And if Gotan’s sartorial splendor was perfect for a Sunday evening at the Hollywood Bowl – which it was in 2006 when they played a brilliant set with Jose Gonzales – then nothing could have suited Bajofondo more than the gritty pre-Columbian surreality of the Mayan Theater en el centro de Los Angeles. See, no one in Bajofondo is what EPR would call “cool” in the Gotan sense of the word. None of them look like they ever have or ever would spend money on a three piece seersucker suit much less Italian silk ties and matching fedoras. That is a collective suavité  that Gotan has cultivated to euro-style perfection. Bajofondo is a collective defined less by “cool” and more by “music dork chic”. But with the hallmark irreverence that will continue to get music dorks laid for generations to come, the members of Bajofondo just…how shall we say? …they just don’t give a fuck. The tall and gawky Javier Casalla is a classically trained violinist but he doesn’t hesitate to swing his bow violently at the crowd, taunting the LA arbiters of style to get off their ass and dance. The ignorant – EPR included – probably never imagined that an accordion player (not even the hombres  from Nortec Collective or Kinky) could really look all that radical on stage…but when Martín Ferrés stretches the bandoneón over his head in a tango crucifixion, it’s difficult to deny…the guy is a fucking rock star! (Do pardon the F-bombs. We’re working towards making this a family-friendly abahaka…but we’re not quite there yet.)

Then you have to factor in the guitarist: a 57-year-old middle aged rocker bouncing around the stage like a chubby 3rd grader hopped up on pop tarts. What? …why is that guy even out there? Unless you did your research, you’d never know that “that guy” – Gustavo Santaolalla – is a Rock en Español pioneer, a producer for Maldita Vecindad, Julieta Venegas, Molotov, Juanes, Café Tacuba…has written, arranged or produced most the soundtracks for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s films…oh yeah… and he also has two Academy Awards for penning the scores to Brokeback Mountain and Babel. Dude is kindof a big deal. But you don’t really need to know this…because the more you listen, the more Bajofondo speaks for itself. The music is beautiful and emotional, just the way tango should be…but then veejay Veronica Loza begins to accelerate the multimedia streaming across the walls…Luciano Supervielle and Juan Campodónico start to blend in the turntables… the beats get louder…and faster… and steadily the energy of the entire room starts to inch higher and higher until… BOOM! – everyone on stage is going apeshit jumping up and down in unison… and you look around and realize that YOU are jumping up and down… and everyone  on the dance floor is jumping up and down! At this point, tango has almost evaporated in favor of the euro/techno dance clubs of Buenos Aires and Punta del Este. Because that’s what this is – a perfect confluence of past and present from el mundo rioplatense. The musicians on stage were trained in the classical tradition but they grew up in the poonchie-poonchie all night dance factories that spawned euro sweat-holes like Pacha and Big One. Of course it doesn’t hurt that in an (un)intentional homage to the Happy Mondays, Bajofondo has one spastic dude on stage whose ONLY apparent job is to run around and dance and fire up the crowd.  He even got the Event Staff security gorillas to let 30 or 40 people up on stage to party with the band during the final encore. The crowd was hugging the band… the band was hugging the crowd… the Event Staff in their yellow windbreakers were hugging each other… and you could trace all of this straight back to Santaolalla. Gustavo may be 20 years senior to the next oldest member of Bajofondo, but he is clearly a man of warmth and passion and sincerity and he projects an undeniable positive energy that both his younger colleagues and the crowd feast upon until, fully sated, everyone decompresses in one big happy sweaty hugfest.  And throughout the show there really is a sense of being fortunate – you feel lucky to have been a part of the show because you know that it was something different…a new direction…something special …and that it might not happen again. After all, this is a collective that stretches from Argentina to Uruguay to Los Angeles… so who knows when they’ll reunite.  Entonces, muchísimas gracias Bajofondo y hasta la próxima… ¡espero!

Esta mañana cuando desperté sentí en mi cuerpo todo el trabajo de esta semana… y lo que falta aún. Por más que quería quedarme en la casa no podía, así que me llené de ánimos y salí para el trabajo.

La primera canción en el reproductor fue El mareo de Bajofondo con Gustavo Cerati. A partir de ese momento se quedó pegada a mi cabeza y dudo que deje de tararearla en todo el día. Esta canción me encanta, siento que me libera, me da energía y me invita a salir a caminar y estar lista para encontrar lo que haya que encontrar.

Eu ficava no meu quarto fazendo qualquer coisa, e de vez enquanto, escutava uma música vindo da sala que me chamava a atenção, essa música vinha da abertura da novela “A Favorita”.

Eu sempre gostei da música, e todo dia escutava e curtia um pouquinho aqui do meu quarto aquilo que eu chamava de mistura de música eletrônica com “Perfume de Mulher” (em alusão ao filme homônimo).

Depois que a novela acabou eu esqueci da música, até que um dia, meio que por acidente, descobri de onde ela vinha.  Bajofondo.

Bajofondo, inicialmente chamado de Bajofondo Tango Club, é um grupo musical composto por músicos argentinos e uruguaios, suas músicas são uma combinação de música eletrônica e tango.

Se você é daqueles que leu a palavra “tango” e já ficou com um pé atrás (ou talvez após ler “música eletrônica”), saiba que a banda possui um ótimo estilo e que vale a pena, com cada um dos estilos dando seu toque especial em uma mesma música. Eu recomendo.

All kinds of perfect: Clutch

Saw Clutch last Wednesday at the Phoenix. I danced like a fool, had some fun in the pit (rolled over my ankle and sprained it, and took the back of someone’s skull in my eye socket) and lost my voice singing. The crowd impressed me, too, perhaps the best I’ve seen in Toronto. I saw Mayhem in June (not my video) but was underwhelmed — it had been years since my last metal show and I  too tripped out by all the kids on their cell phones all night — so I had been worried I’d lost my ability to get into a good, heavy show.

Clutch is one of my all-time favourite bands, inspiring near-fanaticism in me and others that’s well-nigh impossible to explain to those who don’t get it. It doesn’t describe well: post-hardcore, given solid doses of blues and funk so that it turned into a really stoned, less aggro Rage Against the Machine on the way to sounding like beer belly rock. But the band is tight, breathes the most monstrous grooves and has one of the most gifted lyricists around.

A lot of bands I want to see in town this fall. A bit of nostalgia (Obituary), a few bands past their glory that I still feel I should check out (KMFDM, Skinny Puppy, Os Mutantes — although the latter may still have some cred, we’ll see), and some top-notch contemporary shit (Bajofondo, Fleck/Hussain/Meyer). There are a few other metal bands I may add to the nostalgia list, but I’m too embarrassed to name them in polite, literate company. I missed Down and Voivod, they played last night, although that show may have been eminently missable anyway.

Cinematheque’s new season

Just got the new Cinematheque program with the fall schedule in the mail and am pleased as punch (they haven’t updated the schedule yet). My Cinematheque membership saved my life last fall, after I moved back to Canada and was still completely out of sorts; I caught a big chunk of the Oshima retrospective (In the realm of the senses is a must-see for those interested in power and desire in eroticism, and deeply disturbing) and Fassbinder’s Berlin Alexanderplatz, a 15-hour adaptation of Alfred Döblin’s novel, screened over a single weekend. I saw little in the spring, only Bicycle thieves quite by chance one day when the gal and I were strolling around the neighbourhood.

Among other dandies, the fall season has retrospectives of the films of Elia Kazan and Manoel de Oliveira. Again, happy for company.

Sitting in a cafe/restaurant in Colonia, Uruguay last month, Emily and I were introduced to Bajofondo. One of their concerts was flashing on a wall-mounted flat screen TV and blasting through some stereo speakers. At first it sounded like the typical trip-hop, electro-tango jam. But then I realized it wasn’t. It had phat beats and beauty.

Bajofondo also uses real instruments, such as upright bass, violin, bandoneón, drums, and piano (along with some electronic gadgetry, of course), and they create real melody rather than looping fragments of existing songs. A handful of talented guest artists, including some well-known singers (such as Elvis Costello, Nelly Furtado, and Julieta Venegas, who, by the way, if you haven’t heard of her is really worth checking out), are also involved in the project. By the time we finished our dessert, I had made up my mind to buy their album as soon as I got home.

If you’re looking for something fresh and cross-cultural (specifically Argentine/Uruguayan, seasoned with a rich mixture of Milonga and Tango) then I highly recommend Bajofondo’s latest album, Mar Dulce.

Hay días en los que uno se levanta con banda sonora. Puedo decir que si no me pasa a diario sí me pasa mucho. Hasta camina uno al ritmo de la canción del día y cuando menos piensa ya va casi bailando. Tengo una ventaja, pocas cosas me dan pena.

Hoy, desde que me levanté, Perfume de Bajofondo ha estado sonando en mi cabeza todo el día. Una y otra vez me encontré tarareando la canción que, aparte de ser bellísima, me toca mucho en este momento.

Aprovecharé este post para seguir publicando, de vez en cuando, mis bandas sonoras. Aunque ya lo había empezado hace un tiempo con “Hoy es un día…” y “Esta es una noche…”, ya veré si los mantengo separados o hago una fusión.

Trupele de ‘alternative’ tango cu il numesc eu, au reusit o combinatie perfecta de muzica jazz, electronica si traditional tango. Dintre cele mai celebre trupe ale genului pot sa amintesc Gotan Project, care acum sunt destul de faimosi, Bajofondo ( al caror concert tocmai l-am ratat), Tanghetto, si Otros Aires (very charming name).

Atunci cand persoanele care nu au nicio legatura cu this lovely dance isi dau cu parerea, tind sa se refere la noi ‘tangueros’ ca fiind demodati. Evident, ascultam si mult tango traditional, dar in general tinerii tind sa asculte electrotango, sau neotango. Asta pentru ca iti da posibilitatea sa fi la fel de senzual, dar putin mai creativ.

Bajofondo Tango Club, then shortened to just Bajofondo , is a collective of eight musicians from Uruguay and Argentina, who among them is Gustavo Santaolalla, two-time Academy Award winning film composer (credits include Babel, Brokeback Mountain, and The Motorcycle Diaries) and music producer (Café Tacuba, Molotov, among others). In the late 90’s Santaolalla started experimenting with tango and electronica; but Santaolalla is no newcomer to the fusion of sounds, in the 70’s he formed a band in Argentina, Arco Iris, in which he fused rock with traditional Latin American music, considered by then a pioneer in Latin America. So he began dealing with the traditional elements of tango, such as piano, violin, and the bandoneón, a type of accordion, traditional instrument in Argentina and Uruguay. Then came electronic music, samplers, drum and bass. But when they started seeing that their style went beyond electrotango, they took off Tango Club, and proclaimed their music as music of Rio de la Plata, which includes tango, rock, hip hop, among others. This is an example of a continuing tradition in music, instead of taking out the old and bringing in the new, they include it, they embrace it, it’s part of their culture. They’re presenting this traditional music and introducing it to new generations, keeping it relevant. A rather vanguard move on their part, an innovate band that is now internationally known, they were awarded a Latin Grammy in 2003 and played at Coachella this year. A band definitely worth listening to.

Bajofondo Tango Club, después solo Bajofondo es un colectivo de ocho músicos de Uruguay y Argentina, que entre ellos esta el compositor y productor, Gustavo Santaolalla, reconocido por la música de las películas Amores Perros, Babel, Brokeback Mountain, entre otras y las ultimas dos galardonadas con el Oscar. Tambien ha sido productor de bandas como Café Tacuba y Molotov, pero en los 90’s empieza experimentar con los sonidos del tango y la electrónica. Santaolalla no es ningún principiante cuando se trata de la fusión músical; en los 70’s formo la banda Arco Iris, considerada como pionera en la fusión de la música  tradicional latinoamericana y el rock. Asi que mezclan los elementos tradicionales del tango, como el violin, el piano y el bandoneón, un instrumento típico de Argentina y Uruguay, como un acordion. Luego viene la música electrónica, samplers, drum and bass. Pero viendo que su estilo estaba expandiendo mas alla del tango, se dieron que no solo era  electrotango sino que otros sonidos como el rock, el hip hop, y mas el sonido del Rio de la Plata. Esto es un ejemplo de una tradición en la música que continua, fusionar lo viejo con lo nuevo, y no excluirlo. Muestra que la música tradicional de Latinoamerica sigue siendo relevante y de alguna manera quieren introducirlo a nuevas  generaciones para que no sea olvidada. Bajofondo, hoy es una de las bandas vanguardistas de Latinoamerica, reconocida mundialmente, por los Grammys Latinos en el 2003, y acaba de tocar en Coachella en abril. Escuchenlos.

It’s incredible to think that we’re already halfway done with 2009. And yet in the first six months of 09, nyc has already seen a year’s worth of amazing performances. Here’s a rundown of my top five concerts so far:

While Gustavo Santaolalla’s pet project turned out a great show, I would’ve liked a guest or two to perform the great vocal performances by La Mala Rodriguez, Julieta Venegas, and others on Mar Dulce.

4- Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Hammerstein Ballroom on 4/5/09.

LFC’s triumphant return to the stage after a seven-year hiatus was worth the wait. They played their hits as well as future classics like the cumbia villera’ed “Padre Nuestro”.

3- Los Aterciopelados, at the Highline on 4/4/09.

The Colombians dedicated much of their set list to Rio, the album they were promoting, which didn’t sit well with some long-time fans. But regardless, the duo from Bogotá sounded better than ever. 2- Buraka Som Sistema, Bowery Ballroom on 5/2/09

After reading their concert preview in TONY and listening to their Morning Becomes Eclectic performance, I decided to catch them live and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Their energetic, throbbing kuduro is as infectious as it is potent: You can’t help but move when a Buraka song starts.

1- Cafe Tacuba, Hammerstein Ballroom on 6/28/09

You’da thought this was one of the first songs performed judging by the energy of the crowd. But no, this was the final song of the an almost three-hour show!

Best. show. Here’s why. Definitely one of the best CafeTa shows that I’ve ever seen in my 10 years of CafeTa concerts.

A Argentina é atualmente a 5ª maior produtora mundial de vinhos, fortíssima em exportar lã e possuidora das carnes bovinas mais macias do mercado. Ganhou o mundo com futebol, mas é melhor no rugby. E claro, são o epicentro do tango, gênero musical que somente eles sabem dançar direito.

Mas não é só no tango que a Argentina debulha. O cena rock underground por aqueles lados é extremamente potente. Bandas como Attaque 77, de punk-rock alternativo são pesadas e influentes. Esse grupo vegan formado na década de 80 é respeitado por compôr canções críticas que falam tanto da sociedade quanto da libertação e proteção dos animais. Recentemente fizeram alguns covers bem-humorados que ampliaram seu leque de fãs, como da faixa “Amigo” de Roberto Carlos.

1) Attack 77 – El Cielo Puede Esperar

Outro bom representante do cenário atual, é o grupo Boom Boom Kid, que pude conferir recentemente no Hangar 110, em São Paulo. Banda formada das sobras de outra banda, a Fun People, fazem um ska-punk divertido em inglês e espanhol. Cheios de energia, contagiam até mesmo que não conhece seu trabalho quando sobem nos palcos tipo eu.

2) Boom Boom Kid – She Runnaway

Com isso dá pra conhecer um pouco desse país que tá ali, logo ao lado. Mas vale também conferir outras coisas como Bajofondo (electro-tango), Soda Stereo (pop rock), Miranda! (electro-pop),o cabuloso Vampiria (gothic-metal) e o incrível Gotan Project.

O Bajofondo é um grupo músical que mistura vários estilos da música latina, entre elas o Tango em destaque. Desde sua estreia em 2002 a banda conseguiu um enorme público vanguardista, graças a um de seus fundadores, Gustavo Santaolalla -  responsável por levar oscar a alguns filmes pela categoria de melhor trilha sonora, Babel e  O Segredo de Brokeback Mountain.

Por mais que você não conheça a banda, algum dia já escutou um trechinho de sua música, se é que assiste televisão. Pois bem, a banda é responsável pela abertura da novela “A Favorita”, sim, aquele tango eletrônico mesmo. (obrigado @tpugli pela dica).

Um Vivo Rio lotado foi conferir a apresentação do grupo meio argentino, meio uruguaio Bajofondo. Verdade que a maioria do público (e muito dos famosos) foram lá para conferir o som do grupo influenciados pela boa mistura produzida pelos franceses do Gotan Project.

Muitas conversas no hall do Vivo Rio giravam em torno do que esperar da apresentação. Pouco depois de entrar e encontrar minha mesa vejo uma pessoa que pode dar um rumo ao que iríamos ver.

“Já os vi em um show na Patagônia e não tenho dúvidas de que são melhores que o Gothan Project. São mais dançantes e misturam mais influências latinas”, me disse Fábio Gradel, um louco por música que calhou de ganhar a vida advogando.

Não deu outra. O grupo, que promove seu último trabalho – Mar Dulce -,  fez um verdadeiro baile – com direito ao público no palco nas últimas músicas – mesclado por momentos , digamos, mais introspectivos, sempre transpirando latinidade. Nesta parte,  o premiado Gustavo Santaolalla (Oscar pela trilha de Brockeback Mountain), mostrou que realmente sabe tudo de música.

Além da ótima mistura de ritmos e da eficiente iluminação, a gana dos integrantes, que vibravam como técnicos na beira do gramado após um gol de seus times. Teve gente que viu o começou o show sem muito interesse e, no quarto número, estavam desesperados procurando a máquina fotográfica para registrar o que via.

Embalados pela música tema da novela A Favorita (repetida duas vezes e ainda tocada na versão de estúdio),  o Bajofondo ainda reuniu Dado  Villa-Lobos e Marcelo Bonfá, que não tocavam juntos fazia mais de 13 anos e levaram o rock do Legião Urbana ao mix de influências milongas que embalaram a noite.

A corrida até a barraquinha de CDs do grupo foi grande após o show.

Ah, onde entram os Beatles? No baixo Hofner usado por um dos músicos do grupo em alguns números.
