Ancient Chinese Herbs Ginseng, Cordyceps, and Rhodiola help regulate cortisol production in the body. If you have to much Cortisol it will decrease it, if you don’t have enough cortisol it will boost hormone levels.

What is Cortisol

Cortisol is a stress hormone excreted by the adrenal glands which sit on top of the kidneys. Cortisol has everything to do with our fight or flight response.  When we are “stressed” in a state fight or flight cortisol is excreted by the adrenal glands into the blood stream making us more on edge and alert.  This allows us to push through a hard day of work or put the finishing touches on a project before a big deadline.  It also gives us the energy of “flight”.  If and actual bear or dog is chasing us we will have extra energy to run away.

 Deleterious Effects of High Cortisol

Insulin Resistance - When cortisol is high it causes the liver to release sugar to fuel our fight or flight response.  When our blood sugar levels are high the pancreas releases insulin more frequently resulting in decreased insulin receptor function on our cells. When these are decreased the body can not store the sugar in fat and it is left  in the blood resulting in glycation which will lead to Type II diabetes and cell death over time.

Water Retention and Weight Gain - Increased Cortisol Increases the Hormone Aldosterone which is secreted by the kidneys. Aldosterone is an anti-diuretic hormone. This means it holds sodium in the body.  When the body has increased sodium we hold more water in our tissues and many times our blood pressure will increase because of the excess fluids having to be circulated through the venous system.

Fatigue - When Cortisol is chronically increased we will start to experience fatigue. Naturally Cortisol should be high in the morning to help us wake up and decrease through out the day so we can relax and sleep well at night.  When we have chronically increased cortisol our sleep is disrupted leading to fatigue and sleep irregularities.  Sleep dysregulation also plays a huge role in immune function, hormone production, and brain health.

Hormonal Balance Disruption - Chronic Increased Cortisol can lead to increased PMS symptoms in women, and decreased Testosterone in men.  The reason being is that the precursor to male and female hormones is Pregnenolone. Pregnenolone is also the precursor to Cortisol. If Cortisol is high and out of balance in the body there is a good chance you sex hormones ,Testosterone, Estrogen, and Progesterone balances will be decreased and imbalanced.

Treatment

Most adult complaints of back pain are related to trauma to their spine that occurred in their childhood or adolescence.

Most of the problems that we see in our office can be described as being, ”Old Problems”from accidents, injuries, slips, and falls.  That means that when we study a new patient, most of the time we find evidence indicating that the problem has been around for months and years, even though the patient may have been feeling the problem for just days or weeks.

I often get this if get injured should I use Ice or Heat.

The answer is if you get an acute injury which mean you fell, sprained an ankle, have
any kind of inflammation, swelling, or spasm.

If this is the case you should always use Ice for at least 48 hours. The ice should be
applied to the injured, swollen, or spasmed area for 15 minutes on with the ice and 15
minutes off with the ice as needed until the pain and swelling decreases.

If you experience “CHRONIC STIFFNESS AND TIGHTNESS” I always recommend heat for
15 to 30 minutes followed by stretching what ever the affected area that is giving you
trouble.

Another way to remember this is HEAT for stiffness and ICE for pain.
