British Vogue’s December’s issue brought on a strong sense of nostalgia for me. A specific article, The Secret History of London Fashion Week, chronicled LFW from the `80s to present. After reading the piece, an abundance of emotions got my creative juices flowing, and a whirlwind of images fled through my mind. Truth be told, I had not really known LFW until recently but I remember the iridescence that fashion had as a whole. In the article, a series of designers, supermodels and buyers went into detail about the many tribulations the show endured over the years. But the focal points – Lynne Franks, a major PR Director and Stevie Smith – the mastermind behind collection Body Map, were the most inspiring. It was they who- with the exception of Vivienne Westwood and her line – were trailblazers for what London fashion was to become.

“Our LFW debut was called Cat in the Hat Takes a Tumble With the Rumblefish,” mused Smith. “We created a way of dressing using jerseys and sweatshirts that wasn’t just for skinny people, we had old, young, fat and thin on the catwalk. Even my mum.” His vision was beyond making pretty clothes and being conventional. Body Map was a breakaway from the norm other Fashion Designers were concurring with at the time. Even Franks’s concept was avant-garde “I persuaded one my clients to sponsor a tent [in Olympia] and up it went. The lawn collapsed after a few seasons and we had to move, but this marked the start of a new mood in fashion – it was fun and funky and young.”

Though it’s not quite as prestigious as fashion week in Milan or Paris, London Fashion Week is still the best place to showcase collections of both old and young. Matter of fact, London is ahead of all fashion corners for cultivating fashion design.  But the `80s and early `90s were a pivotal moment in fashion, as most designers of today who are creatively schizophrenic draw inspiration from fashion of that time. And not just from London, during the `80s fashion on a global scale became so baroque that the concept of colours and shapes held no barriers. The more abstract your dressing, the better. This was a philosophy that resonated with the fashion elite, rock stars and the hip-hop scene.

Body Map is a proven testament of playing with design concepts waywardly, and boldly. There’s fierce determination to make a statement in the collections. A great prime example of this is this piece worn by Uma Thurman:

As we move into modern times, Body Map’s concept was applied rather unconsciously by Toronto-based fashion designer Blaine Degannes of Rain Anthology:

Considering Dagannes had no background in fashion, I reckon his fashion history was extremely limited. Maybe if he did more research, it would have been easier for him to connect the dots. A reviewer of Toronto Fashion Week (where Dagannes debuted) stated his line Caribbean influenced, I’m not sure if that’s a bad thing, but it’s good when a fashion designer is influenced (much like Stevie Smith) but their upbringings. Degannes has the right idea, just not at the right level.

I do feel sorry for the pioneers who scavenge for talent now, the problem with a lot of fashion designers (much like aspiring fashion journalists) is that they’re too consumed with being something they’re not. They’re either overly processed and pretentious or stiff and dull. But all isn’t lost.

Russian designer Alexander Terexov takes the same concept and adds a resort feel to his Spring/Summer 2010 collection.

It’s safer, and glossier. But it doesn’t stand out. It’s a collection constructed for fashion-conscious pretty girls who like pretty things.

However, my when eyes trail to UK-based Ziad Ghanem’s spring/summer 2010 collection and it gives me hope. Not just because I like punk, but because his collection is a sign of the times. With the state of the economy, we’re looking for inspiration and he gives us that by taking the Body Map concept and revitalizing it:

Very British, very fun. That’s the word! Fashion was supposed to be fun. It’s okay if historic elements are prevalent. But while art and fashion are merged together, you’re supposed to enjoy wearing the garments.

Another favorite of mine is Berlin-fashion line C.Neeon who know how to the colour and print concept seamlessly.

Bare in mind they’ve been around for a long time, but the vision was there from the beginning, that’s why they’ve come this far.

Admittedly, I have a lifetime of fashion purgatory ahead. Before allowing my inner fashion feline to emerge, I held on to what I thought I knew: Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent and Balmain. I liked what I thought I liked, and that was what I knew, but thanks to discovering Body Map, the eccentric world of British fashion has given me a new outlook. Not just for what to wear, but for my fashion life in general.

The long-awaited filming of Burlesque [1], Christina Aguilera’s first movie, have finally started, so her public outings are rarer than before. She was recently spotted out in Los Angeles with her husband: they went to Osteria Mozza, one of her favourite Italian restaurants. What hits us is her brand new haircut. I must admit I have loved it since the first time I saw these pics: Christina looks so much younger and fresher with this bob and parted bangs. I’m a fan of long hair, but this haircut really suits her. Of course she didn’t get rid of her trademark platinum blonde, but made it even blonder.

She wore a very simple, yet cute, outfit: she paired black leggings with a black t-shirt and a black leather motorcycle jacket.

Her Christian Louboutin Calypso pumps are to die for, and so is her clutch, one of the many Balenciaga bags she owns.

This is a Cherche Midi clutch in black pleated leather and suede. Balenciaga bags are the best, in my opinion, but this style doesn’t convince me much, maybe because the beautiful pleating is not emphasized by the black leather. Christina looks a bit pissed off in this pic, cute! Her make-up is focused on red lips as usual, while her eyes are barely made-up.

Christina is a huge Louboutin fan, but she was not the first to sport Calypso pumps.

The forerunner was Blake Lively, who wore the same version (black with glittering blue cap toe) in October 2009 with a gorgeous Victoria Beckham dress.

Michelle Williams and Charlize Theron wore the same style but with a different colour combination – red and black with glittering green cap toe.

Alicia Keys in Giorgio Armani – The dress is fantastic. And the shoes are okay. The jewelry is a bit much and the hair can go… This look had potential to be a 5, but because of everything else I’m just going to give it a 3.

Leona Lewis in Vivienne Westwood – 2 Vivienne Westwood is great, sure. I’d love to see Leona try some other designers now too. NO to those boots.

Shakira in Versace. 5! I really love this dress. I don’t really like the shoes… but my love for the dress overrules. Shakira looks really great in this dress. It was perfect for her.

Demi Lovato in Jenny Packham – 3.5. I like that Demi went very natural for this look everything from her shoes, to her dress color, to her makeup. It washes her out a little bit, but it’s nice to see her clean up and not look so out there. The dress is okay. The neckline is too much for me.

Selena Gomez in Talbot Runhof. 4. This is a very age-appropriate dress for her. She looks cute!

Kelly Clarkson. 1.5. oh noooo Kelly this dress is so unflattering and is a bejeweled disaster ahh

Kristen Bell in Christian Cota – 4. She looks great! You don’t see a dress like that everyday. Kristen made a midriff showing dress classy instead of trashy.

Nicole Kidman in Balenciaga. I don’t care if it’s Balenciaga…this is so wrong. 1

Edyta Sliwinska – Why so many cutouts? This brings me back to terrible memories of Blake Lively’s dangerous slit dress. 2

Kayle Ewell - This dress is AMAZING! This is something I would wear! 5!

Paula Abdul cleaned up nicely. Usually her red carpet outfits suck really hard, but this is actually nice. I usually don’t like the fish tail either especially when Beyonce has a dress with one, but this is something I wouldn’t mind looking at. 4

Jennifer Lopez in Gucci. 3 Meh Nicky Hilton could probably wear this dress a lot better than you.

Nach meinem letzten Fendikaufrausch habe ich heute bei Balenciaga zugeschlagen. Sofort habe ich mich in die Schnürschuhe mit Wildlederdetails und tollem Umschlag verliebt und danach im Hayashi-Sortiment nach den besten Kombinationsmöglichkeiten gesucht. Entschieden habe ich mich für die Hope Hose, das Starstyling Männer T-Shirt zusammen mit meinem Lieblingsschmuck von Mawi, sowie für mein persönliches Highlight-den American Retro Jeans Overall.

So I went shopping in Raleigh earlier this week at the North Hills Mall and was very pleasantly surprised by the amount of quality boutiques in this shopping center!  I actually grew up in Raleigh, but since I’ve moved away this mall was torn down and then rebuilt as an outdoor shopping center, so this was the first time I had been back since they completed it.  Think of it as a mix between Lumina Station & Mayfair.  Anway, if you are planning on doing some shopping in Raleigh, I would definately recomend checking these places out at North Hills:

It is so soft and the deep-V and fit make it surprisingly sexy.  It also comes in gray and black.  Get yours for $85, they sell out quick!

There is also a Uniquities and a Monkees in the shopping center, so if you haven’t found anything at the first 3 spots (which is pretty much impossible), you are bound to find something here.  We are definatly spoiled by the Monkees down here in Wilmington, though.  It is much bigger and has more selection.

If this is true – that’s crazy.

I had the pleasure of attending the “Housing Works Fashion For Action 2009″ sample sale and auction event yesterday night in New York City. The Fall benefit and sample sale featured to die for auction packages, and unbeatable designer finds. The event, which is co-chaired by fab designer Derek Lam, is a four-day charitable fashion event, silent auction, and sample sale, that raises funds for Housing Works’ lifesaving services for homeless and low-income New Yorker’s living with HIV/AIDS:

Packages auctioned include tickets to the “Essence Music Festival 2010” and a three-night-stay in a hotel in New Orleans, tickets to the Oscar de la Renta, BCBG MAXAZRIA, Tracy Reese, and Rebecca Taylor shows during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Spring 2010 in New York City, and two tickets to the Broadway show, backstage passes to meet the cast and a private theater tour with John Stamos two tickets to the Broadway show, backstage passes to meet the cast and a private theater tour with John Stamos, just to name a few.

As for the sample sale, my FAVORITE part by the way, over 150 top designers donated more than $1 million of merchandise, which was sold at 50%-70% off at retail price. But originally retailing at $960, I got (well my mentor got) a sweet, mind-blowing deal, snatching up the last pair in my size for $150!! Who’s your daddy?

Overall, it was an amazing, successful event, and besides my brand new, fab pair of Balenciaga’s, the atmosphere was great! Can’t wait until next time!

Richie about town flaunting her Balenciaga. Such a versatile day bag for bohemians.

It’s no secret that the ubiquitous Balenciaga bag designed by Nicholas Ghesquire is one of many ”It” bags among celebs.  It has been for a few years and that is telling of the style’s endurance among those the Hollywood darlings that have short fashion attention spans.  Chi-chi girls collect them in every shade and trot them out like it’s not a thing.  Like the Hermes Birkin or the Fendi Baguette, it’s one that should be tucked away for safe-keeping to hand down to your daughters.  Definitely future vintage appeal. ie. “OMG, mom you were sooooo cool!” 

If Vogue was to do a feature on Must-Have bags over the century, this one would definitely be selected to epitomize the mid-2000’s.  The classic features motorcycle zippers, vintage lambskin, stud hardware and convertible straps.   There are variations of the famous style which range from clutch to two handled tote.  My personal favourite is the Giant Work style which comes in a delicous gelato rainbow of colours such as Praline, Maldives, Pebble, Raisin and Pomegranate.  Of late, I have been on my bestest behaviour in regards to fancy designer purchases but the Balenciaga has been on the top of the list of “Things to Buy When I Shame Spiral (instead of eating my feelings).”

Oh beloved Balenciaga.  How I adore thee. Let me count the ways. 

Purple Lovah: Balenciaga Arena Giant City

His line is for those that love minimalism. The sharp architectural edges, monochromatic palette of blacks, silver and greys and bondage elements are bold, yet very clean – it serves its purpose. I love the fringe embellishments, and while I wouldn’t wear a whole look, I can still make a statement with separates which is what I like (actually, what I prefer). I’m not a maven. I don’t like to wear a designer because it’s a designer, and I stress that for me, it’s more about the art of fashion. That’s why I love the aforementioned designers. I’m also highly influenced by the punk era of the early `70s, and I love the industrial goth look; which is why I like designers who create collections with a dark, edgy reference.

Ultimately, of course the line plays with the ideas of pretentiousness but it’s fun. And the fact that he’s self-taught means he has a natural flare for constructing garments for the human silhouette.

Rad Hourani is a hot one.

The brand, mintdesigns was launched in 2001. They have been in Tokyo Collection since ‘03 S/S. The awards they won include the Moet et Chandon New Designer’s Award in 2005. In 2007, mintdesigns garage store opened in Shibuya PARCO. They presented their collection in the 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT THIS PLAY! show. In 2008, they presented the opening show at São Paulo Fashion Week for ‘09 S/S. Both designers currently hold positions as guest professors at the Faculty of Art and Design at Osaka Seikei University. In 2009 they presented their collection at the Milano Salone TOKYO FIBER ‘09.Mint Designs turned out a dainty crop of dresses featuring details such as shimmery stripes, textured fabric and quirky graphics. One frock featured a darling print of tiny Charlie Chaplins, while another showcased circular cutouts along the sides.

A mediados del siglo XIX nace lo que conocemos como alta costura gracias a Charles Frederick Worth (octubre 13, 1826 – marzo 10, 1895) que fue el que creó la figura del “diseñador de moda”.

En 1892 nació lo que podemos considerar la biblia de la moda: la revista Vogue. Fue fundada en Estados Unidos en 1892 por Arthur Baldwin Turnure. Esta revista de moda y estilos de vida, considerada la más influyente a nivel mundial, hoy se edita en más de veinte países. En España está desde los años ochenta y desde 2001 está disponible su versión online, con contenidos propios.

En los años 1960s un grupo de jóvenes diseñadores, aprendices de couturiers como Dior o Balenciaga, dejaron las casas de moda para las que trabajaban y abrieron sus propios establecimientos. Los más exitosos de esos jóvenes diseñadores fueron Yves Saint Laurent,Pierre Cardin, André Courrèges y Emanuel Ungaro.

Lacroix es quizás la casa de moda más exitosa de entre las que abrieron a finales del siglo XX.

En los años 1960s ocurrió un revuelo en contra de los estándares de la moda por artistas de rock y hippies, así como una internacionalización de la moda.

En 1990 aparece la primera cámara fotográfica digital. Esto supuso un giro radical en la elaboración de books, portadas, carteles, etc.
