Lurigt intro på den här låten, man förleds ju att tro att det handlar om en ballad. Sen vaknar det hela till liv och sen när man hör den vokala insatsen sätta igång så blir det till ett enda WOW. Hon har en riktigt skön röst, helt i min smak, märkligt att jag aldrig hört talas om June Evans tidigare.

Ja, som ni märker så är jag ute och samlar på mig en massa nygamla influenser och en av de bästa källorna för sådant just nu är FFSOUND, en YouTube-kanal som jag är väldigt förtjust i eftersom den innehåller så makalöst mycket bra musik helt i min smak. Så nu har jag inte tid att skriva mer, måste lyssna vidare och se om jag hittar nåt annat kul.

Richard Marx is a pianist and singer whose work I’ve actually loved over the years.  His use of melody, the thoughtful pacing of every nuance, and that unmistakable voice are trademarks of all his classic hits.

My video selection this week is arguably the biggest hit of his career.  It is easily one of the the best pop ballads of the 80’s (if not all time).  This song brings back so many memories.  Again, I’ve always been a sucker for a gorgeous piano ballad, and this one is so hauntingly powerful.  Every note packs a punch.  After the crescendo at the end of the bridge, the guitar swoops in and just breaks your heart completely.

This video is live footage from a concert Richard did back in 1993.  He sounds just as good as he does on his album.

Lloyd Cole – Live!

A filthy night in Brighton is not for the fainthearted, but Lloyd Cole is a talent worth braving the elements for. For those not in the know, Cole’s star burned brightly in the eighties when he was lauded by the music press as one of the most distinctive and literate songwriters around. A string of hit singles and albums followed until seemingly at the height of his success, he disbanded the Commotions and decamped for New York. Predictably the press turned on him and although he continued to record exceptional albums, he was denied the recognition he deserved. Stung by the experience, Cole has spent a decade crafting immaculate songs, releasing the results on a series of self financed albums and touring solo.

To the show then. Two sets, about 35 songs including covers of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Tower of Song’, Kris Kristofferson’s ‘Please Don’t Tell Me How This Story Ends’ and surprisingly, The Killer’s ‘Human’. Cole’s dry, self deprecating wit lifts the audience and the voice being intact, his reworked arrangements of his own extensive catalogue, including a dusting of new material combine to produce a truly remarkable gig. Cole’s is an enviable talent, as a songwriter he leaves other more feted musicians in his dust, as a lyricist he is quite simply untouchable. That he has decided to reject the trappings of the industry allows his music to speak for itself. That it does, eloquently, is no mean achievement in a business where for most performers such a decision would result in at best, a ghastly silence. About time for a critical reappraisal in my opinion…

Coming from a well-received previous episode; Glee’s latest offering, “Ballad,” felt rather routine (in terms of impact) despite the story taking a crucial turn. In the greater scheme of things, “Sectionals” will be the mid-season blow out but it’s good that revelations are coming out early. These last two episodes seem to prepare us for the Finn-Puck showdown while the love quadrangle of Finn-Rachel-Quinn-Kurt is proving to be interesting.

If there was a particular thing of merit in this episode, it’s the strength of acting through the eyes. I believe that this is a skill – nay a gift – that is missing in a lot of actors. The power of the close-up shot is bringing the viewer into an intimate relationship with the character. By seeing the face alone, we need to connect with something and nothing is more compelling than the eyes. Glances and stares would only work if the actor communicates the emotion in a sincere and realistic way. Devoid of dialogue and music, do I feel what you are trying to get across? There were numerous examples of good “eye acting” throughout the episode. I was pleased that Matthew Morrison and Lea Michele did well in the hilarious opening sequence. It’s easy to discount theatre actors for subtle acting because the stage set-up doesn’t afford the viewers with the luxury of a close-up. Chris Colfer’s character was adorable in his pining for Finn through his glances aided by the pursing of the lips. The fleeting glances during the show’s final performance were enjoyable. It spoke a lot about where the show wants to go with 2 storylines. If there was anyone who faltered, I felt it was Dianna Agron in her revelation scene. It wasn’t bad but I felt some degree of emptiness in her eyes. The tears were there and the cracking of the voice compensated. There was enough empathy to get me through and it could very well be a personal opinion but could she have been more “longing” for her parents’ love? What came across was more like, “I’m sorry I disappointed you.” I think I also needed the: “I need you now more than ever” look in her eyes.

On a final note, Amber Riley and Kevin McHale laid claim to more solos when they impressed in Glee’s performance of “Lean On Me.” There have been growing concerns from fans that Michele and Cory Monteith have been getting too many of the solos. Frankly, they are the lead characters and it’s not their call but one for the writers and producers to ponder. But seeing more singing exposure from the “secondary” characters shows the depth of talent on the show (as if the first 9 episodes weren’t proof enough). The duet pairings provided for interesting combinations and I’m hoping that the show actually explores these for future performances.

You can’t have brilliant episodes all the time but this wasn’t bad.

Ballad, del inglés medieval Balade.

Así es como comienza este décimo capitulo de Glee. Y como adelantábamos hace unos días, Will les propone un ejercicio a los chicos para prepararse para los regionales, ya que éste año será obligatorio cantar una balada. Todos deben cantar por parejas, pero elegidas al azar para no ponerles las cosas demasiado fáciles. Lo que Will no tiene en cuenta es que uno de los chicos, Matt, ha tenido un pequeño problemilla con una araña en su oído. ¡Una excusa muy Ryan Murphy!

Will nos deja claro que una balada no sólo es una canción de amor, sino que nos ayuda a expresar sentimientos a través de la música que no somos capaces de decir de ninguna otra manera. Escuchando esto, ya me esperaba un episodio un poco ñoño. Lo mismo me paso con Wheels y me equivoque, la frase de Artie diciendo que su pene todavía funcionaba no tiene precio.

Will tiene la mala suerte, aunque muchos no opinarían lo mismo, de tener que participar el mismo y cantar con Rachel como pareja. Él momento de ellos dos cantando Endless Love de Lionel Ritchie & Diana Ross es bastante divertido. Las caras de Will mientras canta y ve la cara de loca enamorada de Rachel es única. Casi no preste atención a la canción, por que no podía parar de reírme con sus pensamientos en voz en off.

Y por fin conocemos a los padres de Quinn, sin duda su madre es como me la imaginaba, esposa servicial, sin pensamientos propios. Ésta es otra de las cosas de Glee, puede que los personajes este muy estereotipados pero encajan muy bien en la historia, nunca te decepcionan.

Volviendo a Will y a Rachel. Toda chica enamorada necesita mostrar ese amor, ¿no? Lo curioso es el tipo de regalo. Jamás he visto una corbata tan cutre, dios mío lo de las estrellas y la clave de sol casi me mata. Por supuesto Shuester este muerto de miedo, estoy con él, a veces Rachel da un poco de miedito.

Aunque para mi daba más daba más miedo aún, Susy Pepper, sin duda. Es muy gracioso esa vuelta a tras de Will cuando le cuenta a Emma que otra estudiante se había enamorado de él en el pasado. Con otra corbata incluida, esta vez con guindillas, muy acorde con el nombre de la chica. Cuando vi el “trágico” final de la historia, pensé que sería muy raro iba a ser muy raro hacer algo similar con Rachel. Susy se comió la guindilla más picante de todo el mundo, ¿Qué diablos iba a hacer Rachel?

La respuesta llegó más tarde, para empezar, fue utilizada por Terri como ama de casa: cocina venado, limpia los baños… Y ella encantada de la vida. Finalmente, Rachel se da cuenta de que ha estado haciendo el tonto. Aunque es una chica lista, por un momento quiso pensar que las cosas entre un chico y ella podrían funcionar. No le importaba que le doblase la edad. No se que terminara pasando con Rachel, pero cada vez me cae mejor.

Por otro lado, tenemos a Finn al que le a tocado cantar con Kurt, que como no podía ser de otra manera esta enamorado locamente de él. Sabemos que Kurt, es un chico listo y tiene un plan para que nuestro quarterback caiga rendido en sus brazos. Y el punto 0 es siendo su amigo. Debo admitir que la canción que le anima a cantarle a su futura hija me encanta, I’ll Stand By You. El momento cantándole a la ecografía es otro de los momentos que hacen a Glee única.

Como es previsible al final la madre de Finn se entera de que Quinn y Finn van a tener una bebe. Ahora sólo fatal que los padres de la reina de la castidad también lo sepan. Y el momento llega en una cena con los padres de ella, la canción de Finn You’re Having My Baby, no puede ser más explicita. Lo que era de esperar, era la reacción de los padres de Quinn, ¿cómo su padre puede decir que la quiere tanto si le da la espalda al primer error? Hay gente que prefiere creer que el mundo y las personas han de ser perfectos.

Puck tiene poco protagonismo en éste capitulo, una pena. Pero parece que Mercedes le hace entender que lo mejor que puede hacer es ponerse a un lado y dejar que Quin y Finn sean los padres del bebe. Al fin y al cabo, por mucho que le fastidie Quin lo ha elegido a él. ¿Creéis que Puck hará caso? Espero que nos lo resuelvan en el capitulo que viene.

No ha sido mi capitulo favorito, pero me ha gustado bastante. Eliminaría la escena final de la canción, rollo todos somos amigos y os apoyaremos. Pero, es que yo puedo llegar a ser un poco rara con las cosas que se pasan de sentimentales.

Rachel has a hardcore crush on Will in "Ballad," and gives him a gift to show her (creepy) affection.

Hey there, Gleeksters, do you know what a ballad is? If you don’t, you will by the end of this episode, in which we see every type of ballad you could think of from love ballads, to friendship ballads, to “stay the hell away from me you creepy stalker girl” ballads.

When Mr. Schue learns that a new requirement for sectionals is that each glee club must perform a ballad, he makes the Gleeks divide into pairs to work on the genre. And, as “fate” would have it, one of the kids is sick, and thus Rachel gets paired with…Mr. Schue. To demonstrate a ballad, Rachel suggests that her and Will sing Diana Ross and Lionel Ritchie’s “Endless Love” for the rest of the group, and thus begins the inevitable “school girl crush” episode (inevitable when you have a teacher as gorgeous as Mr. Will Schuester, that is). Turns out that this isn’t the first time one of Will’s students has been hot for teacher, however, as we learn about Suzy Pepper, a girl that once crushed on Will so much that she ended up in a coma for three days after eating the hottest pepper in the world in a fit of rage. Terri makes a reappearance and takes advantage of Rachel’s love for Will by having her help cook dinner and clean the house, and when Will drives Rachel home, she tries to sing Jennifer Paige’s “Crush” to him, in order to express her feelings. In the end, Rachel (with the help of Suzy Pepper) realizes the foolishness of her infatuation, apologizes to Mr. Schue and the two move on so that she can later start back up her relationship with Puck. Or maybe that last part’s just in my head!

In other plotlines, the Finn/Quinn baby drama heats up as Finn’s mom finds out (and is awesome and supportive), Quinn’s parents find out (and kick her out of the house), and Mercedes finds out from Puck that he’s the real baby daddy. Oh, and Finn’s method of telling The Fabrays? Singing Paul Anka’s “You’re Having My Baby.” Effective, yes, but sensitive to the situation? Not so much. Plus, Kurt still has a massive crush on Finn and tries to help him with his girl troubles as a bonding tactic, with hopes that when things inevitably fall apart with Quinn, Finn will come crying into Kurt’s shoulder pads.

Favourite moments, scenes, and quotes:

• Shaft got name-checked! Did everyone hear that Matt was sick? That’s Shaft, the Gleek boy that nobody had ever referred to by his proper name until now. Everyone meet Matt! Also, in that same scene where the kids were paired up, Mike Chang was once again referred to as “The Other Asian,” which amused me greatly.
• The interior monologues of Kurt, Puck, and Finn while watching Rachel and Mr. Schue sing “Endless Love.” Kurt: “I could totally sing this song with Finn, but screw him if he thinks he’s taking the Diana Ross part from me.” Puck: “I love the days when I don’t wear underwear. Full commando.” Finn: “I never noticed how nice Rachel’s butt is. Oh, crap, I think Quinn knows I’m staring at it.” I also loved how Rachel begins to chase Mr. Schue around the piano. Poor Will looks terrified!
• Quinn is going to chastity ball with her father in a big white gown. Oh, such delicious, delicious irony.
• Emma to Will: “If we were ranking crush-worthy teachers at this school, you’d be number one with a bullet!”
• Finn singing The Pretenders’ “I’ll Stand By You,” not to Quinn, but to his unborn baby girl, that, well, isn’t actually his baby girl. First he’s singing it on stage, but then it moves to him singing the song in his bedroom while gazing lovingly at the ultrasound video on his MacBook. Hilarious and endearing all at the same time.
• All of the Kurt/Finn bonding moments. Sure, Kurt’s doing it all in an attempt to get in Finn’s pants, but they were absolutely adorable together this week.
• Kurt (about Finn, and referring to Brittany): “I don’t know why I find his stupidity charming. He’s cheating off of a girl who thinks the square root of 4 is rainbows.”
• 

  Emma and Rachel both get googly-eyed while watching Will sing a mash-up of "Don't Stand So Close To Me" and "Young Girl." Oh, Rachel, you just don't get it, do you?

  Will singing a mash-up of The Police’s “Don’t Stand So Close To Me” and Gary Puckett & The Union Gap’s “Young Girl” as a means to explain to Rachel that her crush is inappropriate. The singing, dancing, and overall performance was fantastic (and displayed his Broadway skills very well, I think), and I loved how dreamy-eyed both Rachel and Emma were while watching. Also, Rachel’s analysis of the message Will was trying convey made me giggle: “It means I’m very young, and it’s hard for you to stand close to me.”

• Finn calling Kurt from the Fabrays’ bathroom, freaking out about his upcoming song confession, and subsequently doing karate chops at the medicine cabinet mirror to psych himself up.
• Quinn breaking down crying in telling her parents that she needs their support in her pregnancy, and her father showing absolutely no mercy and kicking her out of the house. Dianna Agron was amazing in this scene – so very powerful.
• Suzy Pepper to Rachel: “Get that mildly attractive groove back.”
• 

  In the end, it's all about the Gleeks supporting Finn and Quinn. "Lean On Me," indeed.

  The Gleeks singing Bill Withers’ “Lean On Me” to Finn and Quinn. I always love the big group numbers, and this was no different than usual. It was so sweet, happy, and fun, and it totally made me teary-eyed while I grinned uncontrollably. Artie and Mercedes sing wonderfully together, and it was great to hear them take the leads on this. The whole scene was just totally adorable, especially when Mercedes got Finn and Quinn up to dance. Also, the “call me” bit at the end of the song with Kurt aiming it at Finn and Puck aiming it at Quinn? Very awesome touch.

I gotta say, Glee fans, that after last week’s amazing return to our television screens, I was a bit nervous that “Ballad” wouldn’t be able to follow it up. Fortunately, I was dead wrong. The amazing baby drama and fantastic songs totally won me over! The only major downside? There was no Sue! Fortunately, it seems she’s going to be a main feature in next week’s episode, and for my fellow Canadians who didn’t get an episode 11 preview on Global, check it below:

Next week: Sue’s leaking the glee club’s set list for sectionals to competing schools! There’s a glee club from a school for the deaf! And one from a school for criminals! Eve guest stars! And the kids wear crazy wigs!

Sentirlo suonare con tanta passione uno standard come tchmo) con questa impressionante intensità (non sembra di sentire il suono di un sassofono ma quello di  una voce umana) ti lascia semplicemente senza fiato.

Ayler era un musicista immenso e l’interpretazione che dà di  Nobody knows the trouble I’ve seen (un brano che è stato cantato anche da Satchmo)  è la prova del suo toccante lirismo.
