Javon Thompson

La storia di Javon Thompson, bimbo di appena 12 mesi, è una di quelle in cui la parola “incredibile” non è sufficiente per descrivere le circostanze che lo hanno portato alla morte. E non è sufficiente nemmeno per descrivere il procedimento giudiziario.

Tutto ha inizio con l’ingresso di Ria Ramkissoon, 20enne all’epoca dei fatti, madre del bambino, nel culto “1 Mind Ministries” subito dopo la nascita di Javon.  Secondo i documenti della corte, il culto è guidato da una donna che si fa chiamare Queen Antoinette, ed ha sede in una villetta a schiera nel distretto ovest di Baltimora.

Nel Dicembre 2006 Queen Antoinette avrebbe dato istruzioni a Ria e altri membri di privare il piccolo Javon di cibo e acqua.  Il bambino, i cui resti sono stati ritrovati in una valigia, è stato lasciato morire di fame dai membri del culto – compresa sua madre – perché rifiutava di dire «amen» dopo i pasti. Lo consideravano un “demone”.

Nessuno di loro ha cercato aiuto medico quando Javon ha smesso di respirare. Finirà per morire tra le braccia di sua madre.

Non soddisfatta per l’operato, Queen Antoinette ha lasciato il corpo esanime in una stanza per più di una settimana, sostenendo che «Dio lo avrebbe resuscitato dai morti». In seguito, ha bruciato i vestiti del bambino e un materasso e ha messo il suo corpo in una valigia verde, che apriva periodicamente per spruzzare del disinfettante nel tentativo di coprire l’odore.

All’inizio del 2007 i membri del gruppo hanno abbandonato Baltimora per trasferirsi a Filadelfia, dove lasceranno la valigia verde e altri bagagli nel capannone di un uomo che avevano conosciuto durante la loro permanenza. La valigia verrà ritrovata nel 2008 dalla polizia grazie a una soffiata.

Tutti verranno inizialmente incriminati per omicidio di primo grado e la madre finirà in un reparto psichiatrico del Baltimore Central Booking and Intake Center. Nel Marzo del 2009, Ria Ramkissoon, ormai 22enne, decide di dichiararsi colpevole stringendo un patto che non ha precedenti nella giurisprudenza americana: coopererà nell’accusa degli altri imputati nel processo per la morte di suo figlio a condizione che le accuse contro di lei siano stralciate nel caso in cui il bambino resuscitasse dai morti.

«E’ inoltre specificato – ha detto il Giudice Timothy Doory durante la descrizione del patto con la madre del ragazzo – che se la vittima di questo caso, Javon Thompson, resusciterà, come voi ancora sperate, potrete stralciare la dichiarazione di colpevolezza e anche le accuse contro di voi saranno ritirate».

Il portavoce dell’ufficio legale dello stato del Baltimora, Margaret Burns, ha affermato che la donna non potrà esimersi dai suoi obblighi se tenterà di sostenere la reincarnazione del figlio in altre forme. «Dovrà essere una resurrezione come quella di Gesù, non una reincarnazione in un oggetto o un animale».

I magistrati hanno garantito che se la donna testimonierà con onestà contro gli altri imputati, secondo l’accordo raggiunto, sarà rilasciata, messa in libertà vigilata e verrà posta in terapia, che potrebbe includere un “processo di deprogrammazione”.

Lo scorso 11 Agosto gli avvocati di Ria Ramkissoon hanno reso noto che la loro cliente verrà rilasciata dal carcere di Baltimora e affidata ad un programma di aiuto, senza cancelli o guardie, in una fattoria situata in una zona rurale nel Nord-Est del Maryland. Il luogo è stato scelto da un magistrato che si occupa di pene alternative.

«Non è un istituto di correzione. E’ un posto in cui potrà riacclimatarsi. Sarà parte di una comunità, avrà un lavoro e delle responsabilità,» ha detto l’avvocato di Ria, Steven D. Silverman. «E’ molto emozionata per l’opportunità di fare qualcosa di positivo».

Il processo agli altri membri del culto – Queen Antoinette, 41 anni; Trevia Williams, 21 anni; Marcus A. Cobbs, 22 anni; Steven L. Bynum, 43 anni -  inizierà ad Ottobre. Antoinette e Williams non hanno indicato avvocati e rappresenteranno loro stessi in aula.

Los belgas, a parte de estar de moda (solo hace falta ver la gira que hay programada en su su myspace) , le montaron un mix para el show de Annie Mac en la BBC1 y entre los mezclados, están gente como Baltimora, Michael Jackson, Laura Branigan, Mr. Oizo, Boney M, Empire Of The Sun, Friendly Fires o The Golden Filter entre otros, en lo que viene a ser la mezcla más extraña que se haya hecho ever. Nos dejan una muestra en un minimix para ir abriendo boca, pero no hay rastro del completo. Si alguien lo encuentra, que me lo pase.

Baltimora – Un pastore impiegato in un istituto privato per persone diversamente abili è stato accusato lo scorso venerdì di aver stretto amicizia con un paziente e poi aver pagato 50.000 dollari – prelevati dai fondi della chiesa – un killer per assassinarlo e riscuotere il premio dell’assicurazione.

Kevin Jerome Pushia, 32 anni e da 13 guardiano notturno in un isitituto gestito dall’associazione Arc of Baltimore (di cui era stato anche manager operativo per quattro mesi prima di rassegnare le dimissioni lo scorso Gennaio), lavorava nei fine settimana per aiutare nella supervisione di 3 adulti diversamente abili.

Il pastore e un secondo uomo, James Omar Clea di 31 anni, sono stati arrestati per aver pianificato l’assassinio di Lemuel Wallace, un degente cieco e mentalmente disabile, ucciso lo scorso 4 Febbraio.

In un’annotazione nel calendario di Pushia, la polizia avrebbe rinvenuto un appunto alla data del 5 Febbraio, giorno successivo al ritrovamento del corpo di Wallace in un bagno di Leakin Park straziato da colpi di arma fuoco, che recita: “L.W. progetto completato”.

La polizia ha reso noto che il pastore ha confessato di aver pianificato l’omicidio di Lemuel Wallace e di aver persuaso numerosi disabili per ottenere la loro fiducia e essere designato come beneficiario nelle loro polizze assicurative.

Il 31 Marzo, un agente della compagnia assicurativa Global Life aveva contattato la polizia menzionando che Pushia era registrato come fratello di Wallace nell’assicurazione da 200.000 dollari del disabile.

L’agente stava eseguendo solo un controllo di routine per verificare che il pastore non fosse fra i sospetti indagati per l’omicidio e in quel momento non risultò esserlo ma per la polizia la chiamata fu un campanello d’allarme che aprì la strada verso nuove indagini.

Durante la perquisizione della casa di Kevin Pushia rinvenirono il calendario e numerose polizze assicurative stipulate a nome di Wallace dallo stesso pastore tramite internet.

Portato alla omicidi, Pushia ha dapprima chiesto un avvocato, poi ha ammesso di aver architettato il piano per intascare i soldi dall’assicurazione e non solo: ha dichiarato di aver stipulato ben sei polizze a nome di Wallace, per un ammontare complessivo di circa un milione di dollari e di avere anche polizze di altri in cui figurava come beneficiario.

Pushia era da più di 11 anni pastore della chiesa “Greater Faith Tabernacle Church Of Deliverance“, in cui figurano i suoi parenti tra i diaconi.

Da ciò che si apprende attraverso il suo sito web, Kevin Pushia era stato “chiamato da Dio” sin dall’età di 15 anni e nel 2000 avrebbe avuto una visione da “Dio e altri santi” in cui sarebbe stato chiamato ad organizzare la Greater Faith Tabernacle Church Of Deliverance.

Trascrivo da questo pdf scandito dal sito archive.org dei brani di “corrispondenza archeologica” sulle scoperte effettuate nel 1884 nel sito archeologico di Suasa, nel territorio comunale di Castelleone di Suasa. I testi sono stati scritti da (nientepopòdimenoche) Wolfgang Helbig, il quale probabilmente nei suoi viaggi in Italia aveva fatto tappa anche nel nostro sito archeologico.

Il seguente testo si trova a pagina 201 del “Bullettino”:

c. Antichità di Casteleone ^[1] di Suasa.

Il terreno di Casteleone ^[2] di Suasa (prov. di Ancona) a quel che pare abbonda di antichità romane. Di fatto benchè non vi fossero stati mai eseguiti scavi sistematici, pure mediante scoperte casuali fatte da contadini si è già formata una numerosa collezione che appartiene al proprietario di quei terreni, D. Emanuele dei principi Ruspoli. Disgraziatamente non sono stati notati né i luoghi precisi, né le particolari circostanze, nelle quali furono scoperti i singoli oggetti. Oltre a ciò quest’ ultimi per ora sono accumulati in maniera che rende molto diffìcile uno studio circostanziato. Ond’è che per oggi debbo limitarmi ad accennare quegli oggetti , i quali ho potuto esaminare accuratamente e che mi sembravano specialmente interessanti. Ma spero di poter dare presto notizie più particolareggiate, giacché D. Emanuele Ruspoli si è deciso ad intraprendere scavi regolari e far portare gli oggetti già ritrovati a Roma, dove in maniera convenevole saranno esposti nel suo appartamento. ^[3]

Tra gli oggetti in bronzo primeggiano i frammenti di una statua colossale a cavallo solidamente dorata. I quali sono una spada rinchiusa nel fodero, lunga 0,71, larga 0,052, e la metà d.^[4] di una testa bardata di cavallo, lunga dalla bocca sino alla radice dell’ orecchio 0,57. La spada ed il di lei fodero hanno il solito tipo dell’ epoca imperiale , quale si scorge p. e. sul celebre cameo di Vienna ^[1]. Sui finimenti del cavallo sono espressi in maniera molto circostanziata i chiodi e le borchiette che li adornano. Alle coreggie incrociantisi sulle tempie è imposta una falera tonda (diam. 0,08) che mostra il busto di un giovane imberbe munito di elmo e clamide (Marte ?) in alto rilievo. Presso la bocca del cavallo poi si ammira una seconda falera (diam. 0,07) ornata di un busto di donna che ha tirato il velo sull’occipite e colla d. posta sul petto tocca l’orlo del velo. I busti di ambedue le falere sono rappresentati di faccia. Quei frammenti tanto nello stile, quanto nella tecnica si raffrontano ai più recenti bronzi trovati a Pompei e ad Ercolano e sembra perciò probabile , che la statua, di cui facevano parte , sia lavorata all’ epoca dei Flavi.

Lo stesso vale per due figurine di bronzo, l’una delle quali (alta 0,12) rappresenta il ritratto di un uomo d’età avanzata in piedi, l’altra (0,081) una Vittoria inginocchiata. L’uomo vestito di tunica e di toga appoggia il braccio d. sulla toga e tiene colla s. nell’altezza della vita un piccolo ruotolo. La faccia tonda e grossa, il collo corto e la rotondità del ventre ricordano i ritratti di Vespasiano e di Tito, ed in ogni caso accenna all’epoca flaviana la capellatura corta. La Vittoria poi veste chitone ed epiblema cinto ed ha sulla parte anteriore del capo una treccia, mentre due lunghi ricci cadono sulle spalle ; essa tiene con ogni mano stesa ingiù un lembo dell’ epiblema. Siccome l’attitudine della figura per il severo parallelismo tanto delle gambe inginocchiate quanto delle braccia stese apparisce molto legata, così deve supporsi, che tale figura abbia fatto parte di un insieme tettonico. Ed infatto si scorge tra le ali un’approfondatura che non può aver servito ad altro che ad inserirvi un appoggio, il quale metteva la figura in relazione con un vaso, candelabro o che sia. Tanto nella testa della Vittoria, quanto in quella del sopradescritto personaggio romano le pupille sono incavate, cioè a quel che pare anticamente erano rilevate mediante argento intarsiatovi dentro.

Uno stile diverso domina in una figura di nano danzante (alta 0,095) ed in un balsamaio di bronzo che ha la forma di una testa di barbaro (alto 0,125). Vi spicca cioè una tendenza decisa per una rappresentanza caratteristica. Il nano balla, contorcendo il corpo in maniera caricata e gettando la testa verso la spalla sinistra. Colla d. alzata sopra il capo suona una nacchera, mentre l’altra nacchera si trova nella s. appoggiata sulla coscia. Egli si presenta ignudo salvo una corona tortilis che circonda il busto, ed una specie di sciarpa avvolta attorno il grosso ventre. La testa è calva, il volto col naso arricciato di una bruttezza grottesca. Siccome il suo lungo fallo è privo di testicoli, così chiaramente si riconosce aver voluto l’artista rappresentare un eunuco.

La testa poi che serve da balsamario, per il naso aquilino, le sopracciglia pronunciate, le ossa guanciali molto prominenti sembra accennare ad un tipo orientale. Ha un pizzo, ma è privo di baffi. Il cranio è coperto di un basso e stretto berretto.

Sarebbe troppo lungo e credo anche inutile il descrivere le varie figurine di Fortuna e di Mercurio, gli amuleti fallici e la grande quantità di utensili in bronzo posseduti da D. Emanuele Ruspoli. Abbondano nella medesima collezione anche frammenti d’ intonachi dipinti, d’ incrostazioni di marmo e vasi di vetro verdastro trasparente, tra i quali ve n’è uno disgraziatamente frammentato che ha ornati in forma di pesce ed oltre a ciò la seguente epigrafe in rilievo

…ΙΧΑΡΕ …… ΡΑΙΝΟΙΚΑΤΑ…..

Oltre a ciò vi osservai gran quantità di dolii e d’anfore puntute d’argilla. Sul manico di un’anfora d’argilla giallastra è stampata in rilievo l’epigrafe CĀVLI. Un altro d’argilla rossastra mostra egualmente in rilievo le lettere DVWV.

Interessante notare che la parte destra della testa di cavallo in bronzo dorato e il gladio che vengono descritti in questo brano, sono andati a finire, dopo la vendita (discussa ma legale per l’epoca) della collezione di Don Marcello Massarenti a Henry Walters nel 1902, negli Stati Uniti e più precisamente sono esposti al Walters Art Museum di Baltimora. Nel sito web del museo è presente una scheda dedicata alla testa suasana.

Inoltre fortunatamente abbiamo anche due fotografie molto belle e dettagliate che Hans Ollermann, in visita al museo statunitense, ha scattato e condiviso pubblicamente su Flickr:

Faccio notare infine la somiglianza della testa equestre con i Bronzi dorati da Cartoceto di Pergola, che si possono vedere dal sito internet ufficiale o dalle fotografie su Wikimedia Commons.

Come la testa e il gladio in bronzo dorato siano finiti dalla collezione della famiglia Ruspoli alla collezione Massarenti non è dato sapere. Certo è che ora, se queste due opere d’arte, nonché beni archeologici, sono andate a finire oltre oceano, sappiamo chi ringraziare: i “principi di Poggio-Suasa” Ruspoli (a cui abbiamo anche dedicata la piazza tra comune e giardinetti) e don Marcello Massarenti.

Su quest’ultimo personaggio e sulla trattativa con Henry Walters troviamo in rete: una breve descrizione di Simona Moretti dell’Università degli Studi di Roma “La Sapienza”:

Composita e discussa fu la collezione di Marcello Massarenti Ordelaffi († 23 ottobre 1905). Egli, nonostante fosse chiamato talvolta ‘monsignore’, nella realtà non lo divenne mai: era un prete, molto vicino alla ‘corte pontificia’, e rivestì il ruolo di ‘sotto elemosiniere’ durante i pontificati di Leone XIII (1878-1903) e Pio X (1903-1914). Non sappiamo con precisione quando iniziò a raccogliere opere d’arte, probabilmente già prima del 1881, quando venne pubblicato il catalogo dei dipinti di primitivi in suo possesso [Catalogue d’une collection de tableaux de diverses écoles, spécialement des écoles italiennes (Rome, 1881)]. Da detto catalogo veniamo a conoscenza della provenienza di alcune opere: sembra che Massarenti abbia comprato da vecchie collezioni bolognesi, come quella del principe Ercolani o del conte Grassi, o in città pontificie come Pesaro, dalle vendite del Monte di Pietà di Roma, dal mercato antiquario di Parigi e di Londra; inoltre la sua familiarità con le più alte cariche ecclesiastiche lo dovette facilitare, senz’altro, nel reperimento di oggetti appartenenti a chiese o monasteri. In principio abitava in una stanza degli appartamenti vaticani, ma proprio l’incrementarsi della raccolta lo costrinse ad affittare più ambienti del vecchio Palazzo Accoramboni, in piazza Rusticucci 18, nei pressi di S. Pietro, dove al primo piano dispose i suoi tesori.

Quasi tutta la collezione Massarenti venne comprata nel 1902 dal celebre collezionista americano Henry Walters (ed oggi si trova appunto alla Walters Art Gallery di Baltimora), ad esclusione di qualche pezzo. Non sappiamo come avvennero i primi contatti, se fu l’ormai anziano prelato amante dell’arte a cercare il ricco americano o la celebrità delle sue raccolte a incuriosire qualche agente di Walters, sembra per certo che il futuro acquirente vide la collezione in situ. L’acquisto veniva firmato il 16 aprile di quello stesso anno; i dettagli della transazione non sono chiarissimi, ma Zeri affermava anni fa che Adolfo Venturi poteva aver partecipato ai negoziati. Tra le opere escluse dalla vendita vi erano senz’altro tre quadri, una scultura, una tavola con iscrizione e una Croce dipinta, che Massarenti cedeva allo Stato per ottenere il permesso di esportazione, ed è possibile che il governo italiano, come è stato scritto, non abbia fatto resistenze per evitare contrasti con la Santa Sede; tuttavia si può ipotizzare che questa prassi fosse abituale. Dalla consultazione del carteggio conservato presso l’Archivio Centrale di Stato di Roma (da me rintracciato e a tutt’oggi inedito), si capisce che il Governo italiano agevolò il più possibile Massarenti.

I started bringing this jam back a few years ago, and yes, It’s still Hot.  What reminded me of this forgotten classic was the 3rd Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie (the one where they go back to 13th century Japan in the time of the samurai) Tarzan Boy was playing on the jukebox of some pizza spot that the Samurai’s and Casey Jones were posted up in.  Anyways check the video & the classic Cool mint Listerine commercial from 93 which featured Baltimora’s timeless masterpiece Tarzan Boy.

Mis tiempos casi se están normalizando y pronto volveré a este blog como corresponde, pero no quiero dejarlos con las orejas vacías en estos días tan fríos.

Y a modo de catarsis por los acontecimientos acontecidos en este último tiempo hago entrega del top five de las canciones mas espantosas que escuche en mi vida, se que las hay peores, pero estas con su horroroso contenido hicieron mella en mi vida.

Children, the nineties were a very weird time for pop culture.  People may think that our musical scene is diverse nowadays with artists like the Jonas Brothers and T-Pain both being able to enjoy mainstream success, but such people are no students of history.  At their core, the Jonas Bothers and T-Pain are basically the same: they have no artistic credibility, they’re both more overproduced than an ELO album, and they’re all younger than me.  Today’s “artists” are really all just kids being exploited by old, fat, white men in bad suits.

This was not the case in the nineties, or at least not in the early nineties.  Back then, artists were artists.  They were people with visions, and their uniqueness and creativity shined clear through.

In order to best illustrate this diversity, I am going to invite you along on a little journey back to a magical year that I like to call “1993.”  Come now and join me on a fanciful adventure through pop culture history.

In 1993, the world was introduced to the best rap group that ever has or ever will exist.  Their sound was unlike anything ever recorded.  They were hip-hop’s first and best nerd-thugs.  They were the Wu Tang Clan.  In 1993, the Clan released “Protect Ya Neck.”

I don’t really feel the need to say anything about this song.  What am I, a fucking music critic?  I can tell you that it sounds good to me.  If you want anything past that, you’re going to have to consult Pitchfork or some shit.

But, 1993 wasn’t a magical year just because it was the year the Wu Tang broke; oh no.  1993 was a magical year because not only was “Protect Ya Neck” a hit, but because the polar opposite of “Protect Ya Neck” was also a hit.  No, I’m not talking about Ricky Martin’s latin hit “Por Favor, Deje Su Cuello Expuesto” (loosely translates to “Please Leave Your Neck Exposed”).  I’m talking about Baltimora’s “Tarzan Boy.”

Oh yes, Tarzan Boy.  The song was technically released in 1985, but burst onto the American musical scene when it was used as the theme for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3.  I’m sure you remember that movie, it’s the one where the turtles go back in time to ancient Japan to save April.  No, no, the second one is the one about the ooze.

Anyway, Ninja Turtles 3 featured this excellent theme song that was not only a huge hit, but would also go on to be a veritable gay club anthem.  This was a development not even David Blaine could have predicted.  I mean, listen to some of these lyrics and tell me if you think there’s anything gay about them.

Okay, I’m going to have to retract my previous statement about no one being able to predict that this song would become a gay anthem.  There’s no doubt about it, this song is totally gay.

You see, the nineties were a wonderful time when nerd/thugs could share the pop charts with gay party boys.  How is that different that today, you ask?  It’s quite simple really.  The Wu Tang Clan and Baltimora are both bands with genuine personalities, as disparate as they may be.  There was nothing contrived about either of these groups, unlike the top hat wearing, synthesized-voiced, elephant-riding bullshit artists we have today.  Cool the fuck out, you old, fat, white men in bad suits; stop trying to convince us we like things that we don’t.  Stupid old, fat, white men in bad suits; always messing things up, being all fat and white.

To the members of the A/V club, the Cultural Dining Club, and the Cat’s Cradle/Knot-Tying Enthusiasts Club: I have a few stories for you.

The first involves the guiltiest purchase I’ve made so far in Vietnam.
…I bought golden, baby speakers.
I’m done kicking myself though. I plan on giving these sweet set of pump-ups to the kids after I leave, and plus I use them a lot for class.
But, anyway let me tell you what happened.

It was a Wednesday night.  Phuoc and I had planned on going speaker shopping right after our night class. We took his motorbike to a side street that was maybe comprised of 75% metal- there were more electronic stores than oxygen.  Every store was filled to the brim with huge, industrial super-metallic speakers stacked all the way up the ceiling and there was hardly any space to breathe without ingesting wires (I didn’t throw the idea of Vietnamese salesman robots out the window just yet…). Even though there was loud music playing in most of the stores, the owners would hawk us immediately as we stepped in the store- sometimes a tiny head would just pop out of the backroom, waiting for us to make our petty request. I didn’t need any of these massive, transformer speakers suitable for a Huynh house rager, all I wanted was the cheapest set of 2 small speakers and a subwoofer (which was inevitably going to have to be a set of black/silver futuristic looking computer speakers, because that’s what everyone likes here.)

We went into a couple stores and Phuoc tried to bargain the cheapest speakers for me, but they wouldn’t budge at all. The third store was the most unorganized… after walking delicately down a narrow pass (thinking the whole time that a speaker was going to fall on my head and that’s how I was going to go) we asked a guy if we could try out a set of speakers.  Then, he disappeared in the back to make a phone call for about 10 minutes (I guess he lost his permission slip?), leaving an actual toddler to watch over the store who was just eating a bowl of ramen and chewing/staring at us. Then, I glanced at this set of really dusty, old-looking, yellow-stained speakers that were above the main displayed television. I said to Phuoc, “Maybe we can ask to try these speakers,” and he kind of looked at me and said politely, “These ones? (pause) Do you like them? …Sure… we can ask if you want.” (What he really wanted to say was: you’re MAD! Insane! These are crap! These are the least futuristic looking speakers in Vietnam! God, I don’t want to be seen with you!) Anywho, we waited in the middle of The Speaker Zoo for a few more minutes, but the guy didn’t get off the phone… so we decided to leave and go to another store.

After a couple more unsuccessful bargaining attempts, we went back towards our motorbike- which was parked in front of the little ramen girl’s store. This time, an older, more responsible-looking woman was there, so we headed in. She let us try the cheapest speakers, but I wasn’t immediately won over. It was so close in price to other better speakers, and the sound quality was so unimpressive that it deserved an “eeh”/head tilt combination.  (Reminds me of how the broken, “popping” speaker in my old car would drive me nearly insane and how Jen would tell me she didn’t hear anything wrong nor understand the concept of sound quality. Also, here’s an amazing fact: that speaker broke that one night we drove down Giles street blasting “I’m A Scatman!” Yep.)

Then, I pointed to the yellow-stained speakers and her saleswoman face lit up kind of creepily like a troll store-clerk about to go get me the last, secret bottle of “dragon’s heroism.”

I was onto her games. She was playing up the speakers so much (even though they were obviously so old and dusty), and I knew she was going to ask for an insane amount of money. But, whatever, I continued watching her show. I figured I should at least listen to how they sounded.

As Phuoc and I waited with our arms crossed, she played with a bunch of cords, plugged in a CD player, and after perusing a drawer-full of bootleg copied CDs for over a minute, she took one out of its plastic cover-slip. I watched as the words “Best of Disco” printed in italicized “Times New Roman” on a white sticker disappeared slowly into the player.

Oh, did she pump up a jam… cranked up the volume and bass until the wheel knobs hit dead ends with a thunk. 80’s music. Definitely 80’s music. Not quite the average disco song.  A few seconds into the song, a familiar “Oh-oh-oh…” echoed throughout the store and I found my body shockingly grooving to the heavy electronic beat. As the “Oh-oh-oh…’s” continued, Phuoc and I met eyes and realized we were both unwillingly grooving, arms still crossed. I started laughing for, well, several reasons: 1) the speakers were so loud my ears magically grew fingers and were trying to plug themselves, 2) could this possibly be the one song that she markets with every time? Or did she hand-pick this song for me? and… wait, what? This song?,  3) why am I actually starting to think this song is awesome? oh God, now I’m starting to wish I had it for college parties…, 4) it felt like we were in some commercial where a song actually convinced us to buy an entertainment system, 5) Oh sweet baby J, that’s not a commercial- that’s actually what’s happening this very moment… oh no…

I could only buy them. I was left with no other choice. It was the hilarity of the situation. It was the crazy over-the-top saleswoman. It was the song.

A shorter short story.

I’ve recently discovered that a room full of children will cease their chaotic demon-like wails/180 head spins if they have worksheets. Who would have guessed?  But, I’ve also recently discovered that many styles of worksheets actually have no learning purpose whatsoever. You could actually learn more from blowing your nose in a tissue (In fact, I hear it’s the new way to “reading your palm.”)

One such worksheet is the “How many words can you make out of The Wayan Brothers” kind; only replace the underlined word with something more important like Paper Bags. I did this with the words “Autumn Leaves” when I had a very significant lesson discussing Autumn on October 1^st. I was really excited- Autumn is by far my favorite season in the U.S. (This is my first Autumn outside of upstate NY… sad face.), and I thought, hey- the beginning of October would make perfect sense for this lesson. The themed day was full of brown and orange coloring activities, and I played Charlie Brown music the whole class.  It was only a little later that I found out October 1^st was actually no longer Autumn… but was known as the first day of their Winter. I have impeccable timing, I tell you.

Anyway, “Autumn Leaves” did give me a nice chuckle. Even though I tell the kids it’s not for a grade and that they should take their time and try doing it by themselves, it just ends up being a crazy copying free-for-all race of who can hand in the most answers in the fastest time. There’s no way to stop them all from running around copying each other’s answers on every wall surface in the room, so you kind of just have to sit back and enjoy watching a terrible remake of the Amazing Race. At one point, I saw a good cluster of 6-7 kids next to the world map I put in the room, so I got up and walked over to them. As I got close to them, they all ran in opposite directions, like I was a slow and unsuccessful net swoop in a fish tank of guppies. Then, one girl came up to me and showed me a word.

Malta.

“Teacher Hy, does this word work?”  I asked her, “Wait- what is Malta?”  Suddenly, 3 other kids came up to me and asked me the same question, “Teacher Hy, is this word okay?”

Malta. Malta. Malta.

I yelled loudly and stopped the class and said, “WAIT!  WHY DOES EVERYONE HAVE THE WORD MALTA?!  STOP WRITING MALTA!  STOP!”  It was too late- every single kid in the room had “Malta” on their worksheet before I could stop the copying train, which was added to a list of words like “Tea, Sat, Ten, and At.” Apparently one kid had found the country name on the map and found the need to spread it like the Good Word, to all corners of the world.

Oh Malta. I’m glad we have a connection now.

Here’s a quick list of other nice, recent memories.

I’ve eaten several duck embryos recently, they’re my favorite treat to eat in the dark. I went to the beach with my teacher/NGO friends, got a flat tire on the way, got it fixed for 30 cents, and ate several French baked goods on the sand. I stopped and watched a cockfight on a side-street a couple blocks from my house for about an hour.  The best part was when one of the trainers mommabirded his rooster some water. I walked in on my youngest kids watching “Coyote Ugly” at a scene where the girls were splashing water on themselves on top of a bar. Later that night, we watched VeggieTales during dinner. We had a movie night at Candice’s and watched “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and on our way home Liz and I stopped just before the university’s gate to revel in the dark, cricket-filled air, realizing moments later there was a hill of tombs next to us.  Great. We went rollerskating at an extremely green disco rink and the techno version of the O.C. “California” song came on.  Nobody noticed. I’m back on the NPR game, and today I learned it’s suggested that everyone has perfect pitch in the first year of life, but the majority lose it. Intense musical training will help retain it, but otherwise, only 1 in 10,000 of the general population will have it and 1 in 10 among people who are intensely musically trained (Sujin!!! We’re special!)  I’ve recently made some photo collages of you all so I can see you every day in my room. Some of you punks don’t respond to me when I talk to you… (but thanks to those who do <3 !)
